Four MAJOR changes for WhatsApp that you need to know about https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/four-major-changes-for-whatsapp-that-you-need-to-know-about-breaking-news-22-june-2022/ Wed, 22 Jun 2022 09:47:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1214849 WhatsApp, which boasts more than 2billion users worldwide has four MAJOR changes that you need to know about.

FOUR WHATSAPP CHANGES ARE MAJOR GAME-CHANGERS

If you’re a WhatsApp user, you’ve most definitely found yourself added to groups you really don’t want to be a part of.

Yes, we have all been there. Some of these groups are created by friends and family, and you stay in the group just because that would be less awkward than leaving the group and letting everyone know you didn’t want to be there in the first place.

We have some great news. According to WaBetaInfo, the messaging platform is working on a new feature that would allow WhatsApp users to leave groups silently.

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE A GROUP SILENTLY

See the screenshot:

Four MAJOR changes for WhatsApp that you need to know about
Only you and the WhatsApp group admin will be notified that you’ve left the group. Photo: WaBetaInfo

This means only you and the WhatsApp group admin will be notified that you’ve left the group. Other members won’t be informed about your exit.

WhatsApp currently informs everyone in a group if a member leaves.

Group admins should always be notified about what happens in their groups, so it is needed to show them who exited a group.

FEATURE IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT

WaBetaInfo furthermore reports that the feature is under development and will soon land on the app’s beta version for Android and iOS.

WhatsApp is also working on other new improvements: the ability to generate rich previews when sharing a link as a text status update.

THE THIRD CHANGE IS EMOJI REACTIONS

The third change is that emoji reactions are now available on the latest version of the app.

“We’re excited to share that emoji reactions are now available on the latest version of the app. Reactions are fun, fast, and they reduce overload in groups too. We’ll continue improving them by adding an even broader range of expressions in the future.”

WhatsApp also said in addition, you can now send files within WhatsApp up to 2GB in size at a time, protected by end-to-end encryption.

“This is an increase from the previous limit of 100MB and we think will be helpful for collaboration among small businesses and school groups. We recommend using WiFi for larger files and we’ll display a counter while uploading or downloading to let you know how long your transfer will take.”

FOURTH CHANGE: YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADD UP TO 512 PEOPLE TO GROUP

And lastly, you will be able to add up to 512 people to a group.

“One of the top requests we’ve consistently received is the option to add more people to a chat, so now we’re slowly rolling out the ability to add up to 512 people to a group. Building private, safe, and secure communities takes work and we think this series of improvements will help people and groups stay close to one another.”

WATCH: UPINGTON NANNY STILL AT LARGE

In the video, the nanny is heard laughing and chatting on the phone, and the baby girl is next to her on the floor. As the baby starts crying, the nanny is seen putting her foot on the baby’s face, and as the baby starts crying more, the nanny puts her toes in the baby’s mouth.

And to make things even worse, the parents found out about the abuse after the video of their little girl was shared on social media.

The baby girl’s father said they were shocked when they saw the video and immediately opened a case of assault and abuse.

POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A CASE OF ASSAULT

“It is unfortunate that we found out about the abuse and the video after the nanny had left the month before. She fled. We need to find her now.”

According to the police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, a case of assault is being investigated.

“The Commander of Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences in Upington, Captain Koos Van Den Heever, is appealing to the public to assist in tracing a person of interest by the name of Clarise Chitauri.”

HOW CAN I TELL WHETHER MY CHILD HAS BEEN ABUSED?

If your child spends any amount of time away from you – whether it’s with a babysitter, with a trusted family friend or relative, or at daycare – it’s natural to be concerned about his safety. And like any parent, you’ve probably wondered whether you’d be able to tell if your child was being mistreated.

Some parents mistakenly overlook signs of abuse because they don’t want to face what’s happening. Most abusers are family members, which makes the situation even harder to accept. On the other hand, even when you do keep an eye out for the physical symptoms and behavioral changes that may point to abuse, it can be tricky to figure out exactly what’s going on.

A child who has been physically abused may:

  • Cry and put up a fight when it’s time to go to daycare or a sitter’s or appear frightened around the caregiver or other adults. (Of course, this could also be a normal reaction to separation. Again, you’ll need to factor in other things, including your instincts.)
  • Show other sudden changes in behavior or performance at daycare or school.
  • Come home with unexplained bruises, abrasions, burns, broken bones, black eyes, cuts, bite marks, or other injuries. Repeated injuries of any type are a warning sign. Any rib fracture, long bone fracture, or bruising in a baby who isn’t yet walking or very mobile should raise concerns about abuse.

If your child is still a baby, learn the signs of shaken baby syndrome (SBS) – which doctors call abusive head trauma. Read our complete article on SBS.

Four MAJOR changes for WhatsApp that you need to know about https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/four-major-changes-for-whatsapp-that-you-need-to-know-about-breaking-news-latest/ Wed, 18 May 2022 05:30:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1175462 WhatsApp, which boasts more than 2billion users worldwide has four MAJOR changes that you need to know about.

Weather Warning: Severe thunderstorms, hail predicted for Northern Cape https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/weather-warning-severe-thunderstorms-hail-predicted-northern-cape-breaking/ Tue, 22 Mar 2022 09:34:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1123210 Severe thunderstorms with hail are expected to make landfall on Tuesday and continue until Wednesday.

THE THUNDERSTORMS WILL MAKE LANDFALL ON TUESDAY

According to SA Weather Service (SAWS), a level 2 warning has been issued.

  • Hantam
  • Calvinia
  • Karoo
  • Sutherland
  • Nama Khoi
  • Springbok

“The strong gusty winds and a large amount of small hail are expected over an open area which can contribute to slippery roads and with the combination of reduced visibility can lead to minor vehicle accidents and longer travel times,” the SAWS said.

RESIDENTS ARE WARNED TO STAY INDOORS

It furthermore warned residents to stay indoors away from metal objects.

“Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity. Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, and/or heavy downpours can accompany the storms.”

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN DRIVING

All road users are requested to take extra caution:

  • Reduce speed
  • Switch on your headlights
  • Pedestrians should be careful when crossing the road
  • Avoid crossing rivers and streams where water is above your ankles

HOW TO MINIMISE HAIL DAMAGE:

Here are some precautions to take to prevent hail damage to your car, whether you are driving and caught in a hailstorm, or your car is parked outside at home or at work:

  • Stock up on fleecy blankets: If there is no undercover parking area to protect your car, vehicle owners should layer their cars with thick blankets to minimise the impact of hailstones and reduce the need for car dent repair. These blankets can be purchased at a minimal cost and left in the boot of your car.
  • Drive like Miss Daisy: If there is no cover nearby and you have to drive in a hailstorm, drive slowly (if possible) and cautiously. Also put your hazards and lights on. Driving cautiously may reduce damage because the hail will ricochet off the surface of the vehicle, while driving fast might cause a collision – especially on wet, slippery roads.
  • Make sure we have your number: Be sure that Santam has your cell number on record and you will receive an automated hail pre-warning message from Africa Weather to ensure you are not caught in an unexpected hailstorm while driving. In severe cases hail can be as big as a cricket ball – call 0860 505 911 to double-check your details.
  • Use your smartphone: Load the locations of nearby covered parking garages into your GPS or smartphone, which will be helpful if you’re on the road and need a safe sheltered area immediately. When hail is predicted, head for the closest undercover area to ride out the storm in safety. If you can’t reach it before the hailstones hit, pull under an overpass, a petrol station canopy or a similar spot that can protect your car from hail damage. Hail will cause more damage to a moving vehicle.
  • Find an alternative use for your floor mats: If you’re caught in a vicious hailstorm and can’t find cover, pull over in a safe location, grab the floor mats and put them on the roof and hood.

CALL ON SAPS MANAGEMENT TO INTERVENE WITH RISE IN SUICIDES IN SERVICE

In a statement, the organization has implied that police suicides are the product of SAPS management’s failure to proactively deal with members mental health problems.

According to Ipusa, the Employee Health and Wellness program (EHW) is battling the fight against police members’ mental health problems.

According to a report by The Witness, President of the organization Bethuel Nkuna said in the statement that professions that help people, like the police, also have their own personal issues which lead to their mental health being affected.

“Police officers find themselves working long and abnormal working hours not compensated for, and if they receive their compensation, [it comes] very late. Some of them are compensated with day-offs, contrary to the working agreement. These unplanned activities contribute immensely to family relationships breakdown, said Nkuna.

Ipusa has urged all members of the service, their family members, and colleagues to speak out if they are in need of assistance.

POLICE OFFICERS URGED TO GET HELP

She urged police who were struggling to get help.

“Families must also heed this clarion call, should they see that their family members who are police personnel are struggling mental health issues. Colleagues must also assist because usually, they are the first to know if their colleagues have mental health problems,” read the statement.

“On Thursday, 3 March 2022, at 11:00, about 1000 learners were addressed on drugs, bullying, gangsterism, violence, bunking of school, and sexual offences.”

The school principals of both schools thanked the South African Police Service for ensuring the learners’ moral fibre preservation.

WHY IS SCHOOL-BASED CRIME PREVENTION VITAL?

School-based crime prevention is intended to enrich the participation of police officers in promoting safe and orderly school environments.

School safety is often a critical obstacle to learning. Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community, and schools are not always free from
fear, intimidation or victimisation.

The Department of Basic Education, in partnership with the police is committed to preventing, managing and responding to incidents of crime and violence in schools.

Enormous swarms of brown locusts becoming disastrous – urgent action needed https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/enormous-swarms-of-brown-locusts-becoming-disastrous-urgent-action-needed-breaking/ Fri, 04 Mar 2022 09:06:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1109897 The enormous swarms of brown locusts causing destruction across the Northern, Eastern, and Western Cape urgently need to be eradicated.

WHY IS THERE URGENT ACTION NEEDED?

President of Agri Northern Cape, Nicol Jansen, reportedly said the swarms are still in the pedestrian stage but would start taking flight within the next four or five days, making the problem a hundred times worse.

He told Farmer’s Weekly that aerial combating is currently the most effective option for managing the swarms.

IF SWARMS REACH FLIGHT STAGE IT COULD BE DISASTROUS

According to Jansen, if the swarms reach flight stage, it would mean a disaster of massive proportions, with enormous costs to the agricultural sector.

ALSO READ: WATCH | ‘Like a horror movie’: Locust swarms engulf cars on N1, N10

“It is therefore of vital importance that we prevent the swarms from reaching the irrigated crop production areas along the Orange River and in the Free State and North West,” Jansen added.

And there is more bad news…

POSSIBILITY THAT THIRD-GENERATION LOCUST COULD HATCH

Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, Croplife South Africa’s operations and stewardship manager, warned that there was a strong possibility that the third generation of locusts could hatch by May.

He explained that the warm weather, excellent veld regrowth, and humid conditions were ideal for developing the third generation of insects.

WHAT PROVINCES ARE AFFECTED?

The swarms stretched from as far afield as Jansenville in the Eastern Cape to Merweville in the Western Cape. In the Northern Cape, the areas of Victoria West, Marydale, Kleinbegin, Vosburg, and Richmond, amongst others, were worst affected by the locusts.

Earlier this year, former Generations actor Mangaliso Ngema has called on the government’s intervention after thousands of locusts attacked him in the Northern Cape.

“Customers who send items to other countries must make sure they do not send anything that is not allowed in the mail, which includes any arms, ammunition, explosives, liquids, or items that could break and leak.

“No plant or animal material may be sent to other countries. For more information, please visit the website of the postal administration in the receiving country.”

You will be delighted to know that it will be easy to use this feature, as users will only have to swipe up from the microphone button to lock a recording.

WhatsApp will show a pause button to the left of the send button, which you can hit to halt the recording temporarily.

As soon as you are ready to continue, you can tap the microphone button again. They can also preview their recorded message before sending it by pressing the play button on the left.

WHAT IS THE SECOND BIG CHANGE?

WhatsApp is developing a feature that will allow you to migrate your chat history from Android to iOS and vice versa.

While you can already migrate your chat history from iOS to Samsung Devices, this feature is expected to make it easier for users to manage their chat history should they swap operating systems.

Android 12 devices are expected to receive chat history support from iOS at a later date.

WE LOVE THE THIRD BIG CHANGE…

The third big change that WhatsApp will be introducing is that it developed a new feature that will allow iOS users to react to messages with an emoji similar to its sister app Facebook Messenger.

This includes the ability to ‘like’ or ‘heart’ messages sent by other users.

The feature is currently unavailable to WhatsApp’s wider user base but will likely be made available in an update released in the coming months.

THE FOUR CHANGE IS A TWO-STEP VERIFICATION

WhatsApp is also developing security changes to make two-step verification more manageable for users.

It will include the ability to enable or disable the two-step verification on the web/desktop client.

“This is very important, especially when you lose your phone and you do not remember your PIN. Yes, you can restore it by requesting a reset link, but if you are temporarily unable to log into your mail account, this is a good solution,” WABetaInfo said.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED?

Your first instinct might be to wash or change your clothes. Instead, get to a safe place as soon as possible. This could be the nearest hospital, a police precinct or even a home of someone you trust.

  • Call the police immediately and go to your local police precinct to report the crime. Ask for a criminal investigation to begin.
  • Head to your local hospital for immediate medical care. There they will check for injury and prevent sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy.
  • You will be fully examined and samples will be taken. This includes nail clippings, genital and mouth swabs, and possibly undergarments.
  • It will be here where they will collect evidence. For the purposes of evidence collection, try to avoid showering, combing your hair, or changing your clothes before going to the hospital.
  • A rape kit is used with a serial number on it. The rape kit is provided by the police officer involved in the case. The serial number of the rape kit is linked to your case number.
  • The doctor is required to reseal all evidence as well as sealing the box. This is handed from police to doctor, and doctor to police to maintain the chain of evidence.
  • The box is then handed over to the police who will assist you in obtaining what is called a J88 form. This form is a legal document that the medical doctor who examined you should complete describing all injuries noted.
  • It is important now more than ever to have support, so tell someone you trust who can support and assist you. You can also visit the rape crisis program for crisis intervention or support groups. There are also a number of 24-hour hotlines that you can call at any time for assistance.
  • The common assault reporting follows a similar process.
  • Seek medical assistance immediately and do not change clothes, wash, or clean wounds. As with sexual assault, the doctor will make notes and diagrams of your injuries, also on a J88 form

Man convicted for illegal possession of pangolin in Northern Cape https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/man-convicted-for-illegal-possession-of-pangolin-in-northern-cape-breaking/ Fri, 11 Feb 2022 07:33:42 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1093297 A 25-year-old man was convicted and sentenced by Kuruman Regional Court after trying to sell a pangolin for R200 000.

THE MAN WAS CAUGHT LAST YEAR IN OCTOBER

According to police spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe, Sipho Bosman (25) appeared in court on Thursday.

“The man was convicted and sentenced by Kuruman Regional court on Thursday,03 February 2022 for illegal possession of endangered species in terms of the National environmental management Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004,” Thebe said.

A STING OPERATION WAS CONDUCTED

He said the man was arrested last year on 1 October 2021 after information surfaced that he intended to sell a pangolin for R200 000.

“A sting operation was conducted by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation with the assistance of Stock Theft Unit and Local Criminal Record Centre resulted in the suspect being arrested after he was found in possession of the said pangolin.”

The case was successfully investigated, and the suspect pleaded guilty to the contravention of the National environmental management Biodiversity Act 10 of 2004.

Bosman was then sentenced to twelve months imprisonment or a fine of R6000.00 suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of the same offence again.

WHY ARE PANGOLINS BEING SOLD?

According to a report by National Geographic pangolins have long provided meat and traditional medicine for people in Africa and Asia.

Recently, though, demand for pangolin scales—used mainly in China and Vietnam for a variety of ailments—has grown to the point that geographic boundaries are blurring. Vast quantities of them are now being smuggled from Africa to Asia, despite an international trade ban on all eight pangolin species that went into effect in 2017. A new report confirms that this illegal trade is only growing—and that organized international criminal networks that previously dealt predominantly with African elephant ivory are increasingly turning to pangolins.

“The level at which pangolins are being trafficked is huge compared to what it has been in the past,” says Sarah Stoner, director of intelligence at the Wildlife Justice Commission, an international foundation that aims to disrupt and help dismantle the illegal wildlife trade, and lead author of the report. “It’s on a completely different level.”

Pangolins have grabbed news headlines in recent days after researchers at South China Agricultural University said that the pangolin could be an intermediary host for the novel coronavirus. They have not published their findings, and the pangolin has not been confirmed as the animal from which the virus jumped to humans. It is, however, a working theory, and it puts increasing scrutiny on China and Vietnam’s consumption of pangolins and the massive illegal trade in the species.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A MISSING LOVE ONE:
