FATHER AND SONS SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on 1 December 2019, Clyde and his brother Neillon were walking from the nightclub to their home when, along the way, they met three guys who robbed them of their cellphones and shoes.

After being robbed, they reported the incident to their father. The three of them then decided to look for the robbers.

NPA spokesperson in the Northern Cape Mojalefa Senokoatsane said on their way, they met with the victim, whom they alleged was one of the suspects who robbed them. He said that when they got out of their car, it was alleged that the victim had begun to run away when he saw the accused.

Senokoatsane said they caught the victim and started to assault him physically. The three kicked, stabbed with a knife, and hit him with a golf stick.

“After assaulting the victim, they left him to die without ever discovering the alleged cellphones and shoes that they had suspected that the victim had robbed them of. Through diligent investigations by the South African Police Service, the father and his two sons were arrested and charged with murder,” he explained.

NPA WELCOMES JUDGEMENT

Senokoatsane said during the trial. The state argued that the father and his sons acted on a common purpose and that the offence was deliberate, mainly because the accused had armed themselves with a knife and golf stick that they used to attack their victim.

The prosecutor further highlighted that none of the items belonging to the accused were found in the victim’s possession. Additionally, the accused persons took away the deceased right to life, and his right to human dignity was violated. The offence of murder is prevalent within the court’s jurisdiction.

Northern Cape road maintenance projects create jobs for FIVE years https://www.thesouthafrican.com/south-africa/northern-cape-road-maintenance-projects-create-jobs-for-five-years-sanral-explainer/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 12:45:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2129606 Two new Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) contracts in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District of the Northern Cape will create scores of opportunities for subcontracting and local labour over a period of five years, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced.

According to the SA News website, SANRAL is currently evaluating tenders received for these contracts and hopes to appoint contractors later this year.

Speaking at a recent stakeholder engagement session with small business owners in Mothibistad, just outside Kuruman in the Northern Cape, SANRAL Project Manager Rudi Joubert unpacked the significant opportunities for project participation, job creation, skills development, training and enterprise development that come with projects of this magnitude.

Projects to include grass cutting and fixing of potholes

“The work will focus on maintenance of the N14 and will include grass cutting, removal of alien vegetation, cleaning of culverts (a tunnel carrying a stream or open drain under a roadway), clearing of litter at rest areas and keeping the road reserve and the fences clean.

“Maintenance of the N14 will be done on an ongoing basis and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) should prepare to take advantage of the opportunities for subcontracting,” Joubert said.

The first of the two projects runs between Olifantshoek and the North West border and spans about 250 kilometres.

The second project starts between Danielskuil and Kuruman, through Kuruman, past Hotazel, continuing to the Botswana border.

“Both projects will be solely focused on RRM, so they do not deteriorate over time. If there is a pothole, it will be fixed and if there are cracks, they will be sealed,” Joubert said.

The incident reportedly occurred at a residence in Soebatsfontein on Saturday, 8 June, at approximately 7:10.

THREE CHILDREN BURNT TO DEATH IN NORTHERN CAPE

SAPS spokesperson in Northern Cape, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, said on arrival at the scene of the blaze, police found a 25-year-old woman outside the residence with burn wounds.

Ehlers said upon further investigation, three children were found deceased in a bedroom, including two girls aged eight and a two-year-old boy.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation,” Ehlers said.

‘NEGLIGENT’ SISTERS CHARGED

In a separate incident in 2023, two sisters were charged with culpable homicide over the deaths of five children who perished in a shack fire in Laudium, Pretoria.

Lindiwe Machaka (39), and Zanele Machaka (37) appeared at the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court, where they are facing five counts of culpable homicide.

Lindiwe is the grandmother to two of the children, aged one and two. While Zanele is a mother to the rest of the 3 children aged four, five and six.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the sisters had left and locked the children overnight in their shack in Itireleng Informal Settlement near Laudium.

“It is alleged that, while the two were still out, the shack caught fire and all the children were burnt to death on the scene. The two women were arrested at the tavern the same day and are remanded in custody,” NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahajana said.

The City of Tshwane also offered counselling services to the family. MMC fo rCommunity and Social Development Services Peggy de Bruin confirmed the City of Tshwane will further assist the bereaved families with burials, food and transport as well as food parcels after the burials.

Grid-independent: Orania kisses load shedding goodbye! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/orania-battery-load-shedding-population-latest-news/ Fri, 03 May 2024 08:09:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2084992 The controversial white-only town in the Northern Cape Orania is now grid-independent and finally free from load shedding.

NO LOAD SHEDDING IN ORANIA

In 2022, the self-governing town announced its plans to prevent reliance on the wobbly power utility through its solar panel farm called Orasol.

Speaking to The South African, Orania Movement leader Joost Strydom said the idea of their solar farm – Orasol- was their first and most crucial step.

“A total of 2,500 people have to take responsibility for their community, and electricity is one of them. The first phase of the solar farm project cost the community R10.5 million, and not a cent of it came from the government. This all came from the pockets of residents and Orania supporters,” he said then.

Fast forward to 2024, a large battery energy storage system (BESS) that will help the town avoid the first six load shedding stages has been delivered.

According to MyBroadband, the 4.8MWh BESS offers 4.3MWh of useable capacity with a maximum output of 2.75MW.

Furthermore, the BESS consists of multiple lithium-ion battery cells with a control system that can manage battery levels at the cell level. It also features liquid cooling for optimal thermal management.

Orasol told the publication that the battery’s primary purpose would be to provide the town with an uninterrupted electricity supply during power outages, going up to stage 6 load shedding.

The town reportedly has a demand of around 1.2MW, with a peak demand of 1.9MW.

HISTORY OF THE CONTROVERSIAL TOWN

Orania was founded in 1991 by Carel Boshoff Snr, an Afrikaner intellectual and son-in-law of apartheid architect Hendrik Verwoerd.

The controversial town, which has schools, shops, salons, and other amenities, has been giving many politicians sleepless nights, with some vowing to have its status reviewed or closed down.

In 2021, the number of people living in Orania spiked by 16.5%. Since 2018, the amount of residents has skyrocketed by over 55%. The total population is now over 3000 for the first time – and there are plans to go further.

Eight Nigerian nationals who attacked police remanded in custody https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/eight-nigerian-nationals-who-attacked-police-remanded-in-custody/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 18:15:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2075348 Nigerian nationals who attacked police and the Kimberley Police Station after they arrested one of them for alleged drug possession have been remanded in custody.

The eight appeared in the Kimberley District Court on charges of malicious injury to property, assault as well as public violence on Monday, 22 April.

NIGERIAN NATIONALS WHO ATTACKED SAPS APPEARED IN COURT

The eight accused, Onogu Nwaemeka, Kelecho Oken, Ebot Kennedy, Chijioke Steven, Charles Aknaji, Umemba Sophuru, Amajoyi Tochukwu, and Charles Okerie Onyedikashi, were arrested after they attacked the Kimberley Police Station and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

SAPS spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, said on the day of the incident, police had arrested a Nigerian national for possession of illegal drugs, and they (his fellow countrymen) demanded that he not be apprehended by the police.

Mayhem broke out as the police tried to contain the situation, and the accused started to attack the police. Additional tactical police reinforcements were called, and the eight accused were arrested.

Ehlers said police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in Northern Cape Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the matter has been postponed to 26 April for further investigations.

“Accused are remanded in custody until their next court appearance,” he said.

COMMISSIONER WELCOMES ARREST

Following the arrest, Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Otola condemned the behaviour of the Nigerian nationals and stated that those who prevent police from exercising their duties would be dealt with harshly.

Otola said they would not allow such lawless behaviour; we are processing the suspects and working with Home Affairs to determine if they are legally or illegally in the country.

“Police will continue to stamp the state’s authority in the Northern Cape Province,” Otola said at the time.

Police attacked in Northern Cape as incidents become more prevalent https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/drug-dealer-nigerians-attack-police-saps-vehicles-northern-cape/ Fri, 19 Apr 2024 11:22:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2072252 Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has welcomed the arrest of eight foreign nationals believed to be Nigerians who attacked police and damaged vehicles in the Northern Cape.

At the time of the arrest, police were conducting a search and tracing information on one of the alleged drug dealers. A large group of foreign nationals attacked the police.

WHY WERE POLICE ATTACKED IN THE NORTHERN CAPE?

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, said police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Ehlers said one suspect was arrested for illegal possession of drugs, and three suspects were arrested for public violence and detained at Kimberley Police Station.

“During processing, the suspects broke windows at the station. Additional charges of malicious damage to property were added.

“Another group of Nigerians later approached the Police Station and threatened to retaliate,” she explained.

Despite the Operational Commander warning the group to disperse, they resorted to damaging police vehicles.

Subsequently, another four suspects were arrested for malicious damage to property.

COMMISSIONER WELCOMES ARREST

Lieutenant General Otola condemned this behaviour and stated that those who prevent police from exercising their duties would be dealt with harshly.

Otola said they would not allow such lawless behavior; we are processing the suspects and working with Home Affairs to determine if they are legally or illegally in the country.

“Police will continue to stamp the state’s authority in the Northern Cape Province,” Otola added.

INCIDENTS BECOMING PREVALENT

Incidents where police are attacked by individuals resisting arrest, especially foreign nationals are becoming prevalent.

  • In January, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) members were conducting policing on the Ben Schoeman Highway when they noticed a bus coming from Fountains heading in the direction of Centurion.

The bus was overloaded as some passengers were behind the front windscreen beside the driver.

In a video widely circulated on social media, a truck driver who saw what was happening managed to block the bus, and instead, the foreign nationals came out and attacked the truck driver. Furthermore, the cross-border bus drove straight into the TMPD vehicle and bumped into it.

  • In 2023, a video of a foreign national also believed to be Nigerian and a drug dealer resisting arrest by undercover police in Sunnyside, Pretoria went viral on social media platforms.

In the video, a man can be seen trying to run away from two men that are reportedly undercover cops as they want to arrest him. Two other men coming from behind can also be seen dragging the alleged drug dealer away from the police.

The two that are dragging the drug dealer can be seen removing drugs from the one resisting arrest and stuffing them in their pockets in full view of the public and the police.

  • In 2019, Johannesburg’s inner city was plunged into chaos when law enforcement agencies attempted to confiscate counterfeit goods from informal traders. A joint operation between the SAPS and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) quickly spiralled out of control when vendors fought back against the raids.

Then-Premier Makhura and Chief of the JMPD, David Tembe said foreign nationals operating in the inner-city responded with violence; hurling bricks and petrol bombs at law enforcement officers.

The city is filled with historical charm that’s abundantly displayed throughout the town. Here are five must-do things in Kimberley…

Visit Wonderwerk Cave in Kimberley

Aspiring archaeologists, history buffs, nature lovers and the curious traveller should make the two-hour detour from Kimberley to the Wonderwerk Cave. This vast cave, set in the Kuruman Hills, extends 139 metres into the earth and is a National Heritage Site.

The cave gives a glimpse into the plant, animal and human life that lived in it millions of years ago. There are also rock paintings and engraved stones visible in the cave. A guided tour will help explain more about the significance of the area.

Enquire at the gate or at the McGregor Museum in Kimberley for entrance fees to access the cave.

The Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum

View of The Big Hole in Kimberley. Photo: canva

From mid-July 1871 to 1914, 50 000 hopeful miners dug down into the site of the Big Hole, which at the time, was still a rather flat hill.

Digging with hands, picks and shovels, they excavated an impressive 2 772 kg haul of diamonds. It’s little surprise that the frenetic activity eventually caused the hill to collapse, creating the Big Hole we find today. After mining operations ceased in 1914, the Big Hole became the city’s most famous tourist attraction, right in the centre of the town.

Currently, it is filled 40m deep with water. It remains one of the largest cavities excavated by human hands anywhere in the world.

Next to the Big Hole is the Kimberley Mine Museum, depicting life in the town’s 1800s heyday. Visitors can explore the Big Hole with a site guide, travel underground in a reconstructed mine shaft authentic to the period, learn about the lives of the diggers and buy diamonds for cheap(er).

Entrance is R100 per adult.

Other notable museums are the Duggan-Cronin Photography Gallery, the Magersfontein Battlefield Museum and the transport and aviation museums.

Large parts of Southern Africa have been gripped by an intensive heatwave last week, including Gauteng, North-West, and Kwazulu-Natal.

According to the Weather Service, high temperatures might well continue until at least Tuesday in certain provinces.

Here’s what to expect from the rising heat, and how to stay safe when faced with the consequences of a severe heatwave.

Weather Service says heatwaves continue

The SAWS have announced that the intensive heat conditions experienced by some of South Africa’s provinces are likely to continue until at least Tuesday.

A heatwave is defined as a higher-than-normal temperature, which usually lasts for at least two to three days at a time.

Gauteng is expected to be especially affected by the continuing weather; some of the weather notices have also been issued for Kwazulu-Natal, as high temperatures might continue for this part of the country.

Weather warnings for the week

Warnings for the week include more heat for Gauteng, North-West, and Kwazulu-Natal.

Rising temperatures could continue to affect South Africans for a few more days this week, and might last until at least Tuesday, says the SAWS.

Temperatures might rise above 30 degrees Celsius.

Heatwave survival tips

According to the website Healthline, heatstroke is one of the health conditions that can be associated with higher (or extreme) temperatures.

Higher temperatures have already affected parts of the country for days, and the hotter temperature might still continue for several days more to come.

Here’s what we know about the heat, and how South Africans can keep an eye on the coming heatwave.

Heatwave persists for HOTTER country

The South African Weather Service have warned South Africans against a continuation of the heatwave affecting the country.

While South Africans have already been feeling the rise in temperature for several days, it might continue well into the weekend for some of its provinces.

The country is experiencing temperatures above thirty-degrees Celsius, which classifies as a heatwave. Some have reported temperatures higher than have been measured in decades.

Heatwave

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a heatwave is defined as any ‘heat that can last for several days, [and] can have a significant impact on society.’

The WHO warns against prolonged exposure to heat, which can trigger symptoms of dehydration or heatstroke. Higher temperatures can trigger vomiting, nausea, sunburn and other symptoms – especially when you are exposed to it unprotected.

If you are in an affected part of the country, make sure you’re mindful of the heat.

Wrongful accusations of witchcraft against older people is often tied to dementia and other mental health conditions. Accusations from community and family members lead to wrongful persecution of innocent people, behaviour which has been highlighted by the Premier during an October talk.

Here’s what to know about witchcraft accusations, and why this happens.

Witchcraft: Premier condemns accusations

Kwazulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has condemned accusations against elderly people.

According to an October statement, accusations are often aimed at older persons with dementia and other mental health conditions.

The onset of mental health conditions is sometimes wrongfully believed to be signs of bewitchment or possession. According to scientific studies, this is a commonly held belief throughout Africa.

Accusations expose older and vulnerable persons to potential abuse and exploitation, based on the wrongful belief that they are taken over by evil forces.

Witchcraft and the elderly

Dementia and related mental health conditions could lead to abnormal behaviour and speech patterns, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Scientific studies say that conditions affecting behaviour is often misinterpreted and seen as signs of possession or bewitching by communities. The South African Pagan Rights Alliance (SAPRA) points out that “witch hunts” are common even in South Africa.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to these accusations, according to a 2020 scientific study.

Sometimes these strange behaviours are mistaken for witchcraft, though are actually caused by a degenerative medical condition like dementia.

ALSO READ: SASSA: Find important forms HERE online!

According to information, more than 5.3 million gold cards have been issued to date. Gold cards are one way to receive social grants, though these cards are set to expire this year – and in 2024, recipients will require a different way to get their grant.

Here’s what to know about SASSA gold cards and their expiry date.

When do SASSA gold cards expire?

According to a press release, all SASSA gold cards are set to expire this year.

The exact date for cards to expire is set for December 31, 2023. All social grants after this time will have to be paid to new social grant cards, or collected by other means.

ALSO READ: SASSA social grants: How to change your banking details

The press release notes that the exact date for new SASSA cards has not been released, making the future potentially uncertain for some grant recipients.

Without gold cards, grants must be collected manually from retailers or social service office. Alternatively, recipients must add another bank account.

Changing your banking details

The social security agency has an online portal where you can access online grant services and forms.

If you would like to switch from a gold card, then add alternative banking details to your SASSA account. This way your social grant will still be paid on the same date, but automatically go to your bank account.

EGG replacements: How to cope with SA’s egg crisis https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/food/egg-replacements-how-to-cope-with-sas-egg-crisis-05-october-2023/ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/food/egg-replacements-how-to-cope-with-sas-egg-crisis-05-october-2023/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2023 15:00:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1819044 South Africa is facing a serious egg shortage this year, according to news reported by The South African website.

Prices have gone up, while some locals have said that eggs are becoming harder to find in stores at all. The sudden shortage of poultry products is due to a serious Avian Flu outbreak, which has rendered some of SA chicken products a potential danger.

What are you going to do without them?

Here’s how to replace the ‘essential’ ingredient with others for cooking and baking until the crisis is over.

Apple sauce instead of eggs

If you need an egg for baking purposes, one of the first replacements for it could be apple sauce.

According to Healthline.com, apple sauce (mousse) makes a great replacement for the poultry product in baking. Because they hold ingredients together, the general ‘stiffness’ of apple sauce can be used instead of the more common ingredient.

Most cake recipes will be fine with this substitute.

Yes: the apple sauce you can buy as baby food will also work!

Egg yolk powder

For some types of sauces and stews, egg yolks are used to add flavour or achieve specific textures.

While South Africa doesn’t have the best access to poultry products at the moment, yolk powder is still available at most spice shops.

Yolk powder is the dehydrated and powdered product, which can be mixed into recipes the same way the regular ingredient would.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to turn into scrambled anything: it’s best as a baking substitute.

Mashed bananas

Also according to Healthline.com, mashed bananas can also be used as a substitute for eggs when you’re baking or making stews. While you also can’t scramble this, it makes a fine substitute for most cake recipes.

Thanks to its high nutritional content, bananas are also healthy and useful.

Add a drop of vinegar to the mashed fruit to make sure it doesn’t turn brown, as a special kitchen trick.

Vinegar and baking soda

According to MedicalNewsToday.com, vinegar and baking soda can also be used instead of egg for baking and cooking purposes.

The chemical reaction (yes, the bubbling) caused by the mixture helps to aerate recipes, which adds to the ‘fluffiness’ you would usually require eggs for.

More than three to be exact.

This means that Twitter isn’t the best platform to connect with the agency. If you’re hoping to reach them, then you might have to try something different.

SASSA on Twitter

SASSA hasn’t posted on Twitter in over three years.

The account still appears on their website, though doesn’t seem to be active anymore.

Maybe the account has lost access, or maybe news channels have become a better way for them to connect with grant recipients.

SASSA’s last tweet

The last Tweet from the official account was made on April 24, 2020.

This was the last thing said on the official account for the agency:

“R300 per child will be added to Child Support Grants in May only, making it R740 per child. From June until Oct 2020 this grant will go back to R440 per child but each caregiver will get an additional R500 regardless of the number of children they receive a grant for”
