Air Botswana will connect the two prime wildlife destinations for the first time.

CONNECTING TWO PRIME WILDLIFE AREAS

The Gaborone-based airline will commence direct flights between Kasane (Chobe) and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Mbombela, offering convenient access to the Kruger region.

The service will therefore enable seamless connectivity between Chobe National Park (in Botswana) and the Kruger National Park (in South Africa).

KRUGER CHOBE FLIGHTS

Tourism Update reports that this new regional route is set to begin on 1 November.

It will be operated three times a week. Flights will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

AIR BOTSWANA EXPANSION

Air Botswana’s latest route expansion is due to the fact that the airline has acquired three additional aircraft.

This means that it is able to operate more flights and connect more destinations. Thus, growing its flight schedule and route network.

SOUTHERN AFRICAN CONNECTIVITY

Other airlines have also turned to the Kruger to service increased passenger numbers.

Southern Africa is in fact seeing several new routes being opened up in recent times.

Ultimately, new flight routes opening up translate into more travel and tourism opportunities for locals and international visitors.

This has a beneficial effect on the region’s tourism economy.

FLYSAFAIR OPENS TWO KRUGER ROUTES

South Africa’s budget carrier FlySafair has also made inroads into the Kruger this year.

Earlier this year the airline launched direct flights between Cape Town and the Kruger. FlySafair launched this route (termed its ‘Wild Route’) on 2 April.

Then, on 2 August it introduced flights between Johannesburg and the Kruger. This service is operated twice a week.

These new services cater mainly to tourists travelling between these prime tourist destinations.

AFRICAN AVIATION LANDSCAPE

As several countries are now seeing increased visitor numbers, various airlines are opening up new routes and increasing frequencies across the continent.

Last week Qatar Airways announced it had taken a 25% stake in South Africa’s privately owned regional carrier, Airlink.

The arrangement is expected to bring about several benefits for Qatar Airways and Airlink as well as travellers and passengers.

Kruger National Park field ranger wounded by buffalo https://www.thesouthafrican.com/mpumalanga/kruger-national-park/kruger-national-park-field-ranger-wounded-by-buffalo-animal-breaking/ Thu, 15 Aug 2024 07:23:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157597 A field ranger based at Pretoriuskop Section in the Kruger National Park (KNP) was charged and injured by a buffalo this week.

Buffalo charged from behind a thicket

In a SANParks Facebook post, it was confirmed that the field ranger and his colleague were on a patrol near the Sabie River when the animal charged at them from behind a thicket.

The injured ranger managed to hold onto the horns of the animal until his colleague fired shots and put down the animal.

The ranger on site placed an emergency call after which their colleague was immediately attended to by a local doctor and stabilised and thereafter airlifted by helicopter to a nearby medical facility where he is receiving further medical attention.

SANParks Board and Management have extended their well wishes to the ranger on behalf of all staff in SANParks.

In line with established protocols, a debriefing report will be compiled by the Rangers Corps into the incident and its results will be furnished to the KNP Management Committee.

SANParks will also provide the ranger’s family with access to trauma counsellors.

Greenkeeper shows off damage after lion kill at Skukuza Golf Club – WATCH https://www.thesouthafrican.com/mpumalanga/kruger-national-park/greenkeeper-shows-off-damage-after-lion-kill-at-skukuza-golf-club-watch-video-viral-breaking/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 18:12:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157310 An incredible wild sighting played out on Monday, 12 August on the ninth green in front of the Skukuza Golf Club’s restaurant.

According to Jean Rossouw, the club’s greenkeeper, several members were relaxing on the deck just after 19:00, enjoying some drinks and dinner, when two lionesses caught an impala on the green.

According to Rossouw, the lions started feasting on it.

Shortly after, four hyenas came along and tried to get in on the action.

What happened next stunned the onlookers.

A crocodile emerged from the nearby river onto the green, after which the lions made away with the carcass and the reptile started to feast on the remaining scraps.

In the video, the hyenas’ cheekiness and opportunistic ways were on display as they tried to get closer to the crocodile for a bite as well.

Skukuza Golf Club is known as the ‘wildest’ course in the world for good reason!

On Tuesday, Rossouw described the aftermath of the previous night’s “dinner party” and how he will ensure that the greens return to their usual top-notch state.

Writing on their Facebook page on Tuesday, the Skukuza Golf Club posted: “Once the Lions were done enjoying their dinner the Hyenas and crocodiles cleaned up the rest. Dinner guests that clean up after themselves? A bargain we would say. 😂😅

“Stay tuned for a message from Jean, our greenkeeper, about the state of the greens after the dinner party.”

SANParks ‘takes action’ against driver who bumped lioness in Kruger Park https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/sanparks-takes-action-against-driver-who-bumped-lioness-in-kruger-park-breaking-news-watch-video-viral/ Sun, 11 Aug 2024 15:39:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156798 SANParks has reportedly “taken action” against the driver who bumped into a lioness at a sighting in the Kruger National Park.

According to the Lowvelder website, the incident took place on the H1-4 between Satara and Olifants camps.

As reported by The South African website, Kruger National Park (KNP) officials were searching for the clearly impatient driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser who bumped the lioness with his vehicle on Friday, 9 August.

The vehicle was towing a caravan at the time and attempted to squeeze between two other vehicles viewing a pride of lions.

Inexplicably, despite another driver shouting out, the driver of the Toyota kept moving forward, forcing the pride to move so he could pass through.

A video recording of the incident surfaced on social media, resulting – rightly so – in a public outcry, with several comments posted calling for the driver to be banned from entering the park again.

On Sunday, the South African National Parks Facebook page posted:

Dear all,

Please note that the incident of a vehicle bumping a lioness at a sighting is being dealt with at the highest level. Action was implemented yesterday morning already as soon as we were alerted to the incident.

Thank you for the concern and care.

Spot fine?

At the time of publishing it’s unclear what “action was implemented”.

The Lowvelder website reported that Kruger National Park’s spokesperson, Ike Phaahla said: “We have consulted with security officers. They picked up the registration number through our advanced camera technology and will be following up. People should realise they are not invisible when in the park.”

Phaahla added that the driver would most likely be issued a spot fine.

In extreme cases, such as when an animal is run over, the driver might be blacklisted for a period of time.

In addition, any prior offences are also taken into consideration when determining the penalty.

Sadly, similar incidents are becoming the ‘norm’ in the Kruger Park – and other game reserves in South Africa – these days.

According to the Lowvelder website, the incident took place on the H1-4 between Satara and Olifants camps.

As is typical with any lion sighting inside the park, there were a number of cars searching for the best possible viewing spot.

Driver likely to be fined

Unfortunately, the experience was ruined for onlookers as a seemingly impatient driver forced his way through the traffic, bumping a lioness from behind with his Toyota Land Cruiser.

The driver was towing a caravan at the time.

Incredibly, despite another driver shouting out, the driver of the Toyota kept moving forward, forcing the pride to move so he could squeeze through.

Lion on the loose in Mpumalanga near Kruger National Park https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/lion-on-the-loose-in-mpumalanga-near-kruger-national-park-latest-animal-sighting/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 15:28:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2131267 Authorities in the Mpumalanga province confirmed on Monday that a lion has been spotted in the Matsulu area outside Mbombela.

The cat is suspected to have escaped last Friday from the nearby Kruger National Park and killed a cow.

It’s not the first time a lion has escaped through the fences of the Kruger Park.

Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube cautioned the public not to attempt to catch or kill the lion.

“We are advising the community not to confront the lion. As soon as they see it, they must just alert us because we have a team that is well-trained to capture this lion.

“We received a complaint on Saturday, and we had to dispatch a team to search for this lion. Unfortunately, we could not find it. A lion is very dangerous, and it becomes more dangerous when it feels like its life is in danger.

“Our team was there this morning, and there is still no sign of the lion. we think that it has gone back to the nature reserve, but we have already put a cage to capture it.”

Good and bad rhino news

Meanwhile, in some GOOD rhino news, as reported by The South African website, dozens of rhino have been released to the wild in South Africa in a first step of an initiative to free 2 000 into conservancies across the continent, the NGO African Parks said.

The southern white rhino was hunted to near extinction in the late 19th century, but gradually recovered after decades of protection and breeding efforts.

The “ambitious plan to rewild 2 000 southern white rhino into secure protected areas” will happen over the next 10 years, the Johannesburg-based NGO said.

Sadly, in some BAD rhino news, poaching is still rife in the Kruger National Park.

This week, two incidents in South Africa’s most famous park in a space of five days once again highlighted the dangerous conditions rangers operate under.

Rangers face off with rhino poachers in Kruger National Park: Four dead https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/rangers-face-off-with-rhino-poachers-in-kruger-national-park-four-dead/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 14:40:53 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2123565 Two incidents in the Kruger National Park in a space of five days once again highlighted the dangerous conditions rangers operate under.

In particularly, they demonstrate the threats rangers face against suspected poachers.

Incursions on the eastern boundary remain relentless and the anti-poaching units have been under immense pressure as it addresses these.

SANParks is also exploring numerous interventions which includes community mobilisation and support to push back against the threats poaching presents.

Poachers armed with a high calibre rifles

On Friday, 14 June, just prior to sunset, rangers made contact with a group of suspected rhino poachers who were armed with a high calibre rifle, an axe and other poaching equipment.

One of the suspects was fatally wounded on contact while the others escaped.

A rifle and ammunition were recovered at the scene.

Late on the evening of 18 June, rangers encountered another armed group of suspected rhino poachers.

During the contact, three of the suspects were fatally wounded, and a heavy calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and other poaching equipment were seized.

Both incidents are currently being investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS) while the field rangers are receiving counselling.

‘The people you murdered expected you to protect them’: Cop gets three life terms https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/the-people-you-murdered-expected-you-to-protect-them-cop-handed-three-life-terms/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 15:41:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2116632 Constable Sizwe Cedrick Khoza, a cop arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for killing three family members, was sentenced to three life terms.

The 38-year-old was sentenced for killing his wife, her sister, and her brother in Sand River Trust, Hazyview, in Mpumalanga on 30 April 2023.

COP HANDED THREE LIFE TERMS FOR MURDER

In a joint statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Ipid said evidence before the court is that Khoza and his wife, Nomthandazo Suzan Mnisi, 31, had marital problems, and he called a meeting with the wife’s family to assist them.

During the meeting, an argument ensued. Suzan’s brother called Khoza a small boy, which angered him.

Khoza then went to his bedroom, took out his service firearm, and went to the sitting room to show them what a small boy can do.

He fatally shot his wife, her sister Colisile Mnisi, 32, a nurse at Matikwana Hospital, and her brother, Dennis Mkhatshwa, 42.

The incident was reported to Ipid, and Khoza was subsequently arrested. He was later released on bail, and the case was postponed for further investigation.

The docket was handed to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Mpumalanga after investigations, and the prosecutors charged  Khoza with three counts of murder.

He pleaded guilty on 3 June to three counts of murder in the Mpumalanga High Court, and the case was postponed for pre-sentence reports.

On Tuesday, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for each count of murder for each count of murder.

Khoza, who was stationed at Masoyi Police Station, was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The NPA and IPID commended the investigator and prosecutor for ensuring that Khoza was punished for his evil actions.

Hippo attacks workers in Kruger National Park https://www.thesouthafrican.com/mpumalanga/kruger-national-park/hippo-attacks-workers-in-kruger-national-park-breaking-sanparks/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 18:21:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2115913 South African National Parks (SANParks) on Monday reported a hippo attack close to the Kruger National Park’s Paul Kruger Gate.

The incident involved a team from the Biodiversity Social Project, which falls under the Working for Water Programme, based at the Kruger Park.

They were clearing alien plants along the Sabie River when the hippo charged at them in the thick bush close to the riverbank.

The group was accompanied by two-armed field guards who fired shots at the animal.

Three individuals were injured.

The hippo fled back to the river.

Injuries ‘not life threatening’

The injured workers were stabilised by the Skukuza doctor who then transferred them to a nearby hospital for further treatment and observation.

The injuries are described as “serious, but not life threatening”.

KNP Management has sent a message of support to the injured, wishing them a speedy recovery.

The names of the injured are being withheld until their next of kin have been notified.

Alleged rhino poaching kingpin’s sister brutally killed in Hazyview https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/alleged-rhino-poaching-kingpins-sister-brutally-killed-in-hazyview-clyde-mnisi/ Sun, 09 Jun 2024 12:59:19 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2114707 Police in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, are investigating a case of murder with an additional charge of attempted murder after the late alleged rhino poaching kingpin chief Clyde Mnisi’s sister was killed in a hail of bullets.

The 35-year-old woman was fatally shot while a male person sustained some injuries, and the horrific incident occurred on Thursday, 6  June, around 17:55.

ALLEGED RHINO POACHING KINGPIN’S SISTER KILLED IN HAZYVIEW

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Colonel Donald Mdhluli said according to a report, the police were informed then attended a shooting incident that occurred in the late afternoon at a certain food restaurant in Hazyview.

Mdhluli said it is alleged that two armed males descended from a silver-grey Toyota Etios with Gauteng registration plates.

The two suspects allegedly opened fire, injuring a male passenger, while the female driver tragically succumbed to her injuries and was certified dead by the paramedics at the scene.

Mdhluli said some empty cartridges from a rifle and a pistol were found at the scene.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and will form part of the Police investigation.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle that the suspects allegedly used could have been the one that was reportedly stolen or hijacked recently in Bushbuckridge on 21 May,” he added.

WHEN WAS CHIEF CLYDE MNISI MURDERED?

In March 2023, chief Clyde Mnisi from Bohlabela in the Ehlanzeni District was gunned down next to Kruger-Mpumalanga International (KMI) Airport in an apparent hit.

The incident occurred on Airport Road near White River.
Mpumalanga police said Mnisi’s driver sustained some injuries on the leg after being shot during this incident. However, he survived.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said that, according to a report, Chief Mnisi and his driver were travelling in a Toyota Avanza when they had a puncture.

While waiting for assistance, it is alleged that a group of about five heavily armed men wearing balaclavas and gloves came in a BMW X5. They then alighted from the vehicle with high calibre rifles and went straight to the passenger side, where the 37-year-old Chief was seated.

Chief Mnisi’s widow was also brutally gunned down in their family home, just two days after his burial. According to reports, two other people related to the late chief were allegedly brutally murdered.

Following the incident, Mnisi’s family insisted that his murder was not related to the alleged rhino poaching.

Lily Mine: Bodies of trapped workers to be retrieved as operations set to resume https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/lily-mine-reopening-date-vantage-goldfield-latest-news/ Wed, 15 May 2024 18:56:20 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2095723 The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has given Vantage Goldfields the green light to resume operations at the Lily and Barbrook gold mines in Barberton, Mpumalanga.

On 5 February 2016, a container-office went down when a shaft collapsed at the Lily Mine entrance in Louisville near Barberton. The bodies of Solomon Nyirenda, Pretty Nkambule, and Yvonne Mnisi were never retrieved.

LILY MINE MAY START OPERATING AGAIN

Since 2019, the affected families camped outside the Lily Mine with the hope of getting assistance from the government and others to retrieve the bodies of their deceased loved ones who are still trapped in the mine.

At some point, the group’s camp was set alight and their belongings were destroyed. The spokesperson Harry Mazibuko went into hiding after receiving death threats. On the other hand, Vantage Goldfields and the Business Rescue Practitioners introduced over 10 creditors while the mine was closed.

On Wednesday, 15 May, the DMRE said the mine will reopen after Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe met with stakeholders representing Vantage Goldfields, Lomshiyo Traditional Council, the Business Rescue Practitioner, organised labour, and government leaders.

DMRE approved section 11 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) of 2002 so that the mines could start operating again.

The department said Vantage Goldfields is expected to sink a decline/shaft to access the underground workings and retrieve the container and the three missing employees at the Lily mine.

Notably, Mantashe warned that the reopening is not a time for celebrations.

Mantashe said they all agree that at the centre of their work is to reopen Lily Mine, retrieve the bodies, and bring closure to the affected families and fellow mineworkers.

“Despite the approval of section 11, which paves the way for the reopening of the mines and retrieval of the containers, this is not the time for celebrations, but the time for us to put in more efforts and ensure that the mines reopen in the shortest possible time,” he said.

STAKEHOLDERS GIVE FULL SUPPORT

The department said operations may resume later this year.

The department emphasised that all stakeholders, including representatives of the Lomshiyo Traditional Council, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), expressed full support and confidence in the efforts to reopen the mines, which will create much-needed jobs in the Louisville community.

Notably, the business rescue process is expected to be completed by the end of July, after which the operations may resume.

ACTIONSA PICKETS OUTSIDE NPA HEADQUARTERS

In April, ActionSA, together with the affected families, held a picket outside the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) headquarters in Pretoria for failure to prosecute individuals for the Lily Mine tragedy.

ActionSA President Herman Mshaba accused the NPA of dragging its feet regarding instituting criminal proceedings.

“The NPA gives excuse after excuse as to why a decision on possible prosecutions has not taken place while the families of Solomon Nyirenda, Pretty Nkambule, and Yvonne Mnisi, who were engulfed in a sinkhole at the mine, more than eight years ago, await closure and justice for the tragedy,” he said.

In October 2023, the Mbombela Magistrate’s Court found that the NPA should consider criminal prosecution against individuals for the Lily Mine tragedy.

SASSA office in Mkhondo reopens after viral alleged ritual incident https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/sassa-office-mkhondo-mpumalanga-reopens-video-latest-news/ Sun, 12 May 2024 19:17:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2092776 The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Mpumalanga has reopened its office in Mkhondo (formerly Piet Retief) after CCTV captured traditional healers performing rituals in various workstations.

Two senior officials and three unidentified men, who are believed to be traditional healers, were caught on security cameras performing rituals in the office after hours on 17 April.

SASSA OFFICE IN MKHONDO REOPENED

According to the South African Government News Agency, the senior manager reviewed CCTV footage after staff reported finding residues of needles and other muthi-like substances in the office.

Last Sunday, Mpumalanga MEC for Social Development Lindiwe Ntshalintshali and executives from the SASSA held a debriefing with staff.

The leaders also invited local pastors who led a mass prayer session at the office where traditional healers performed the rituals in addition to the fumigation and thorough deep cleaning.

SASSA in Mpumalanga said the intervention led to the office being reopened on Monday, and the public was informed through various social media channels and stakeholders.

According to the agency, services are back to normal, while staff will continue to receive counselling services through a wellness programme.

“As part of continuous support, officials have agreed to utilise the services if [they] still need further counselling,” the statement read.

DEPUTY MINISTER MOTIVATES OFFICIALS

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, also held a debriefing session on Thursday with officials to encourage and motivate them to continue serving the community with resilience.

Bogopane-Zulu also committed to providing all the necessary support to staff.

As previously reported by The South African, in an interview with SAfm, Ngubeni said the incident happened earlier in April.

Ngubeni said the matter is still under investigation. However, they suspect two employees are responsible for bringing the sangomas to the offices.

Mpumalanga SASSA offices closed following alleged witchcraft https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/mpumalanga-piet-retief-sassa-offices-closed-witchcraft-video-twitter/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 13:00:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2081799 South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offices in Mkhondo Municipality (previously known as Piet Retief), Mpumalanga, have been closed for two weeks as workers fear for their lives after a sangoma was captured on CCTV performing a ritual in various workstations.

SASSA spokesperson in Mpumalanga Senzeni Ngubeni confirmed the incident on Monday, 29 April.

SASSA OFFICES IN MPUMALANGA CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS

In an interview with SAfm, Ngubeni said the incident happened earlier in April (two weeks ago).

Ngubeni said the matter is still under investigation. However, they suspect two employees are responsible for bringing the sangoma to the offices.

The two workers have already been suspended, and the matter will undergo a disciplinary process.

“Our workers feel that they are not safe, and they feel that they cannot work in such an environment. We then had to devise a plan to serve the public,” Ngubeni said.

The spokesperson said service delivery has been impacted for the past two weeks as officials fear for their lives and some have fallen sick.

“From today (Monday), we will serve the public in an alternative place. The local municipality offered us a hall, and we have already set it up there. Security is also there to ensure our staff is safe,” he said.

Furthermore, Ngubeni said they were extremely shocked by the incident at the local SASSA in Mpumalanga. Well, he was not the only one as others also took to social media to share their opinions on the viral CCTV footage.

“This is completely barbaric and backward. The manager must be fired, this is not his/her house,” @TsipaA commented.

“Imagine. No shame, no sense of dignity. It’s this type of behaviour that delegates us to second class citizens, then, we blame others for treating us as such,” @Dbnchillies also commented.

“Witchcraft doesn’t create jobs, it destroys them,” @frankdope97 also weighed in.

No arrest warrant issued for ex-minister of State Security Bongani Bongo as case is postponed https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/no-arrest-warrant-issued-former-state-security-minister-bongani-bongo/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 09:53:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2070199 Reports that the former minister of State Security, Bongani Bongo, was set to be arrested for failing to show up in a Mbombela court on Wednesday morning, are untrue.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Newzroom Afrika reported that former minister of spies Bongo and his co-accused did not show up in the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crime Court this morning, where they were due to appear over a case around a controversial land deal where they allegedly scored millions.

“Former State Security minister Bongani Bongo is now a wanted man. Bongo and some of his co-accused were a no-show in the Nelspruit Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Mpumalanga this morning. So a warrant has now be issued and the court has postponed proceedings until the second of May,” reported the broadcaster.

But National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Monica Nyuswa, speaking to The South African, said claims of a pending arrest were untrue.

“No warrant of arrest was issued. The matter was in court today for judgment on Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act. However, all role players made prior arrangements to postpone the matter to 2 May 2024. Only one accused appeared,” Nyuswa said.

Bongo and his co-accused want the charges against them dropped due to a supposed lack of evidence by the State.

Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 “involves the right of an accused to be discharged from the offence, he has allegedly committed where, at the close of the State’s case, there is no evidence on which the court may draw the accused to the charge”.

Background on Bongani Bongo case

Bongo and his co-accused, including his brother Sipho Bongo, were initially charged with corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering worth millions in 2020.

The brothers were accused in connection with a R37.5 million sale and purchase of farm Naauwpoort at Emalahleni by the Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements, on behalf of eMalahleni Municipality. Bongani Bongo at one stage was MEC of the department.

The co-accused were:

  • Robert Burwise
  • Patrick Donald Chirwa
  • Harrington Sizwakhendaba Dhlamini
  • Blessing Mduduzi Singwane
  • David Boy Dube
  • Vusi Willem Magagula
  • Bongani Louis Henry Sibiya
  • Elmon Lawrence Mdaka
  • Sibongile Mercy Mdaka

“Some of the accused, acting in common concert and with common purpose, exploited the normal phenomenon of purchase of land by government by misrepresenting facts to the State [Department of Human Settlements] regarding ownership and true sale price of the farm Naauwpoort,” said then-spokesperson of the NPA, Sipho Ngwema.

The real owner of the farm, Petrus Johannes Van Tonder, was paid R15 million of the R37.5 million for the farm. The money was then paid into the trust account of Singwane Attorneys, in their capacity as conveyancer appointed by the department.

Van Tonder paid R1.5 million commission to Pam Golding as estate agents for the transaction. Singwane, not instructed by the department, paid R22.5 million to Little River Trading which enabled the accused to successfully steal the money,” said Ngwema in 2020.

Along with the Bongo brothers and co-accused, four companies have also been charged: The Little River Trading 156 (Pty) Ltd, Broad Market Trading 204 (Pty) Ltd, Bongiveli CC and Pfuka Afrika CC.

The accused are currently out on R10 000 bail.

Kruger National Park’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ elephants: Learn more https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/kruger-national-park-magnificent-seven-elephants-tuskers/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 07:54:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2058899 Over 30 years ago, seven elephant bulls, all with tusks weighing more than 50kg each, could be found in the Kruger National Park.

The Chief Warden at the time, Dr U de V Pienaar, decided to publicise these elephants as a successful example of the Kruger Park’s conservation work.

He named those bulls that had not already been identified and also coined the collective name, the ‘Magnificent Seven’, based on the 1960 Hollywood film.

The public reaction was staggering and, when each of these great elephants died, it was decided to retrieve their tusks and skulls in order to display them.

The Elephant Hall at Letaba Rest Camp now holds the tusks of Dzombo, Kambaku, Mafunyane, Ndlulamithi, Shawu and Shingwedzi.

The seventh member of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ is João. His tusks are not on display at the Letaba Rest Camp. Read why below …

Coincidently, as reported by The South African website, an elephant broke through the fence of the Letaba Rest Camp this week.

The Letaba Elephant Hall is located in the Letaba Rest Camp in the north of the Kruger National Park, 50km from the nearest entry gate to the park (Phalaborwa).

Entrance to the Letaba Elephant Hall is free.

Opening hours

Open seven days a week, 365 days a year during the following times:

  • Mondays to Saturdays: 08:00 to 20:00
  • Sundays: 08:00 to 18:00

NOTE: The age of each of the elephants was estimated.

Dzombo (c.1935 – 1983)

Origin of Name: Named after the Dzombo stream that traverses the Mopani Flats between the Shingwedzi and Shawu valleys. (The word Dzombo is derived from the Tsonga word Dzombolo meaning ‘to wait for something that is slow in coming’)

Range: He lived in the area bounded by the Tsendze, Letaba and the Shingwedzi Rivers and was most frequently seen along the grassy vlei system of the Shawu valley.

Special Features: Dzombo’s tusks are the classic shape of the Kruger National Park Elephants, bowed and curved pointing forward and slightly upwards. They were also almost identically shaped in length, weight and thickness.

General: Dzombo was the only one of the “Magnificent Seven” to be killed by poachers and it was only by a stroke of luck that Dzombo’s two tusks were not taken. He died in a hail of bullets from an AK 47 fired by a poacher from Mozambique in October 1985. The miscreants were in the act of chopping out the tusks when they were disturbed by the approach of Ranger Ampie Espag and fled leaving their trophies behind. Dzombo met an untimely death at the age of 50 years.

João (date unknown)

Origin of Name: Named by Anthony-Hall Martin for Prester John, legendary priest-king of ancient Africa. (João being the Portuguese for ‘John’) João was also to be found near the waterhole of this name along the Shingwedzi River. This waterhole was named in 1961 by Dr Tol Pienaar (former Warden of KNP and CEO of SANParks) after a former mechanic from Shingwedzi who assisted Dr Pienaar with fish surveys along the Shingwedzi River.

Range: João was first seen near a windmill called João, in the Shingwedzi region, he was known to frequent the area south of the Shingwedzi River. There were times however that he moved as far south as Mahlangene and Shilowa (East Mopani).

Special Features: João was a very large bull, with a shoulder height of 340cm.

General: João was wounded by poachers in 1982, at this time he was immobilized to investigate the damage. Fortunately the wounds were not fatal, and after a dose of antibiotics and cleaning of the wounds he was revived. While immobilised he was fitted with a radio collar and measurements of his tusks taken, he tusks were an estimated combined 130kg which at the time would have made him the heaviest ivory carrier of the Magnificent Seven. In 1984 (approximate age, 45 years) João broke both tusks close to the lip line (20-30cm), presumably in a fight with another bull. Unfortunately the pieces were never found and as a result João is the only member of the Magnificent Seven who is not represented in the Letaba Elephant Hall.

Kambaku (c.1930 – 1985)

Origin of Name: Kambaku is the Tsonga word for ‘Great Tusker’ or ‘Old Elephant Bull’.

Range: This bull moved over a huge tract of country stretching from Satara/Orpen and the Timbavati to Crocodile Bridge.

Special Features: Kambaku’s left ear had a perfectly round hole in it close to the outer edge, and towards the end of his life he had no tail hairs. He was also recognised by the prominent markings on his trunk, which had the appearance of a round patch of smooth skin.

General: Kambaku was the third member of the Magnificent Seven. He was commonly seen by the rangers of the Kingfisherspruit area and was photographed by many visitors to the Kruger National Park. Uniquely unlike several of the other Magnificent Seven bulls, Kambaku was always seen alone.

He was more than 55-years-old when he was shot in late 1985 by Regional Ranger Lynn van Rooyen from the Lower Sabie Ranger Section. The bull was in obvious pain from a bullet wound suffered during a foray across the Crocodile River into a neighboring sugar cane fields. The bullet penetrated his left shoulder, leaving a large wound which eventually became septic. When he could not longer walk and it was clear that death was imminent, he was mercifully shot.

Mafunyane (carcass discovered 16 November 1983)

Origin of Name: This bull was named after former warden of the Kruger National Park Lou Steyn who was well known for his quick temper. (Mafunyane is the Tsonga word for ‘the irritable one’ which appropriately refers to the elephant’s disdain for, and intolerance of humans.)
(Kloppers & Bornman (2005) (A Dictionary of KNP Place Names) gives the meaning of the name as “One who eats greedily”)

Range: This bull roamed in the Shangoni section of the Kruger National Park, which includes the upper reaches of the Shingwedzi River and southwards up to the Bububu stream.

Special Features: Mafunyane’s tusks are fairly straight and their tips are worn to a chisel-edge by as a result of being rubbed on the ground as he moved. His tusks were perfectly symmetrical and of identical length and mass. The bull had a 10cm hole in the right side of his skull that extended into his nasal cavity allowing him to breathe through this passage. One of his toes on his left hind foot was splayed to one side so that he left a distinctive impression, distinguishable from other elephants.

General: Mafunyane was the most famous of the “Magnificent Seven” although he was only seen in the wild by a handful of people, and was rarely seen by visitors as he kept well away from roads. This could be attributed to his shyness or to the fact that he chosen roaming area was very remote. Mafunyane despite having impressive tusks, was not a large bull and was only 327cm at the shoulder, when compared with the average 340cm shoulder height of the other members of the Magnificent Seven.

The immobilisation of Mafunyane on the 8 June 1983 to fit a radio collar and to make plaster cases of the bull’s ivory nearly spelled the end for this bull. When given the antidote to the immobilisation drugs Mafunyane due to his immense tusk size was unable to ‘rock’ himself onto his chest which would have allowed him to stand up, and his repeated efforts caused him to dig his tusks further into the ground. Several strategies were tried to raise him but all failed. After he had been down for several hours and front end loader was brought into assist the team. Mafunyane was eventually ‘scooped’ to his feet and the bull rose and ran into the nearby Mopane bushes much to the relief of the capture team.

Mafunyane’s remains were found on 16 November 1983 near Tari River, Northwest of Shingwedzi. He had been dead for approximately 3-4 weeks and appeared to have died of natural causes. He was about 57 years old when he died.

Ndlulamithi (c.1927 – 1985)

Origin of Name: Ndlulamithi earned his name from his appearance, which is a traditional Tsonga word meaning “taller than the trees”.

Range: His range was known to occupy a large area between the main road from Mooiplaas to the western boundary and stretching from Byashishi drainage system across to Shingwedzi River to the Phongol River.

Special Features: The handsomely curved tusks of Ndlulamithi, the left one sweeping low and well forward, are significantly more twisted than those of the other large bulls. He was considered a tall elephant probably around 340 – 345cm high at the shoulder.

General: Ndulamithi was first identified in 1980 along the Nkokodzi River in northern Kruger National Park. He was an aggressive yet secretive elephant, and was seldom seen. This bull received some fame for charging Dr Anthony Hall-Martin and his assistant while they were trying to photograph him on foot, his intentions unmistakable. He died of natural causes in 1985 in the Shangoni area at an estimated 58 years of age. Paul Zway section ranger of Shangoni at the time found his remains not far from the Nkokodzi Spruit.

Shawu (October 1982)

Origin of Name: The “Shawu Bull” was named after the Shawu valley (Vlei) in which he spent much of his life.

Range: Shawu moved over a large range which spanned the flat Mopani covered plains country between the Letaba and Shingwedzi rivers and stretched from the main road to Lebombo Hills. He did not, however, cover this enormous area regularly, but drifted around slowly, taking about 6 months to move from South to North.

Special Features: Shawu’s tusks are the longest on record in the Kruger National Park and one of the six-longest to ever come out of Africa.

General: Shawu was a fairly approachable animal and showed no particular fear or distrust of vehicles. He was a large bull having a shoulder height of 340cm. Due to the pincer formed by his large tusks he was sometimes referred to in Afrikaans as “Groot Haaktand”. In 1981 it was decided to fit Shawu with a collar as poaching was a constant threat from Mozambique, this was done successfully and he was monitored on a regular basis.

Shawu died of old age in the Kostini area east of Shingwedzi, near the northern watershed of the Shawu Valley (Vlei) in October 1982. He had been ill for some time and his condition and movements were monitored daily towards the end of his life by means of a radio transmitter which had been fitted in a collar around his neck. He was close to 60 years old when he died.

Shingwedzi (c.1934 – 1981)

Origin of Name: Shingwedzi was named after the river and rest camp where he spent the last few years of his life. (Shingwedzi means, “place of ironstone” referring to the gabbro rock outcrops common to the area. Shingwedzi is derived from the Tsonga word Ngwetse which means ‘the sound of metal objects rubbing against each other’).

Range: Shingwedzi was known to move as far west as Nkokodzi and Chugamila hills and as far as the Lebombo’s in the vicinity of Shingwedzi Rest Camp.

Special Features: Shingwedzi’s ivory offers a good example of the classic master servant tusks. He had a large right servant tusk and a shorter left master tusk.

General: Shingwedzi was found dead under a Sycamore Fig and short distance from Shingwedzi camp in January 1981, and as far as can be determine he died of natural causes.

How to determine the age of an elephant: Open wide! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/how-to-determine-the-age-of-an-elephant-teeth-molars-kruger-national-park-did-you-know/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 07:06:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2058951 It is possible to make a rough estimate of an elephant’s age from its physical size, but this varies between individuals.

The best way to do so is to ask the elephant to ‘open wide’ please!

The most reliable way to age an elephant is by looking at its teeth

An elephant’s molars, necessary for grinding up plant material, are replaced six times during its lifetime.

These molars form at the back of the jaw, and move slowly forward and upward.

Each set is gradually worn down and replaced by the next set.

The replacement of these molars can be linked directly to age so, by identifying the molars in use, the age span of the elephant can be determined.

  • Molar set 1 age 0 – 2 years
  • Molar set 2 age 0 – 6 years
  • Molar set 3 age 1 – 15 years
  • Molar set 4 age 6 – 28 years
  • Molar set 5 age 18 – 43 years
  • Molar set 6 age 30 – 65 years

Once the sixth set has worn down, the animal is unable to chew food anymore and dies of starvation.

For more accurate calculations, scientists look at the exact position of the molars within the jaw.

They also examine the dentine and cement on the roots of the teeth.

New layers are laid down every year, so counting the number of layers on the molar can give a more precise age.

The Kruger National Park is home to several thousand elephants in South Africa. It also some 30 years ago boasted the ‘Magnificent Seven’.

Elephant breaks into Kruger National Park rest camp https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/elephant-breaks-into-kruger-national-park-letaba-rest-camp/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 05:01:38 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2057774 An elephant bull broke into the day visitors site at Letaba Rest Camp on Wednesday night, and from there into the rest camp itself.

According to a social media alert on the South African National Parks Facebook page, a couple of hyenas also gained access to the camp through the damaged fence and raided dustbins in the camp.

Fortunately, the elephant nor hyenas didn’t harm any of the guests in the camp.

Guests alerted the duty manager who phoned the ranger on duty and the animals were chased out.

The technical team is currently busy with repairs of the fence.

Meanwhile, as reported by The South African website in February, a restaurant employee was bitten on the arm by a hyena while sleeping in the Berg-en-Dal staff living quarters.

The hyena was euthanised following the attack.

The employee was taken to a hospital in Tshwane.

It was confirmed that a specialist had diagnosed the unnamed employee with fractures in her hand that extended to the articular surface and an oblique fracture near her elbow.

She underwent an operation to repair the fractures and was reported to be “doing well and is very thankful for the good medical care she is receiving”.

Mass poisoning of vultures in Kruger Park draws attention of DA https://www.thesouthafrican.com/mpumalanga/kruger-national-park/mass-poisoning-of-vultures-in-kruger-park-draws-attention-of-democratic-alliance/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 11:22:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2052082 Earlier this month the team from Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre were called by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) due to poisoning in the northern area of the Kruger National Park, due to their expertise in treating poisoned vultures.

Upon arrival at the scene, the results of the poisoning were devastating.

The wildlife that were found to be dead or dying when they arrived on the scene included one buffalo, one hyena, one jackal, 69 white-backed vultures (critically endangered), four lappet-faced vultures (endangered), two bateleurs (endangered), one marabou stork, one cape vulture, one tawny owl, and two hooded vultures (critically endangered).

Poisonings like this are a time-critical emergency and due to the vastness of the Kruger National Park, by the time they were able to get to the remote area, most of the animals were found deceased at the scene.

However, the team at Moholoholo, along with EWT, local veterinarians, and South African National Parks (SANParks), were able to rescue two white-backed vultures who have been taken to the centre and will begin the rehabilitation process aiming to release them back into the wild.

The Greater Kruger is a target for poisonings by poachers for various reasons, including the targeting of species such as lions which have a commercial value, or vultures which are used in traditional medicine.

A carcass, in this case a buffalo, is laced with pesticides containing a very potent poison.

A carcass such as this would naturally draw in a huge variety of species from large predators such as lions to specialist scavengers such as vultures.

Aside from targeting specific animals due to their commercial value, it is also thought that poachers focus on removing vultures from areas they intend to operate in as vultures act as early detection species alerting anti-poaching units to the presence of an illegally poached animal, such as a rhino.

Due in part to poisonings, vulture populations are in a steep decline.

2 000 vultures killed in the last 5 years

In a media release on Thursday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed its grave concern regarding the recent discovery of the poisoned vultures.

The DA added that incident is part of a worrying pattern of vulture poaching and poisoning, contributing to a significant decline in the vulture population in the region, with an estimated 2 000 vultures lost in the park’s northern areas over the last five years.

Vultures play a vital ecological role, particularly in disease control and carcass decomposition, and their diminishing numbers pose a serious threat to ecological health and balance.

The DA believes that the ‘alarming levels of poisoning and poaching of birds of prey has not been prominently reported on or addressed by SANParks officials in the portfolio committee for Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries, raising red flags on transparency, oversight and the prioritisation of wildlife protection in our national parks’.

The DA urged the Minister of Environmental Affairs to take immediate action to investigate these mass killings and to implement urgent measures to protect these important birds.

Police vow to probe death of Secunda domestic worker without fear or favour https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/police-vow-to-probe-death-of-secunda-domestic-worker-without-fear-or-favour/ Sat, 09 Mar 2024 15:38:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2030961 Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela says they will thoroughly investigate the inquest case and circumstances that led to the untimely death of Secunda domestic worker Tryphina Mngomezulu without any fear of favour.

The 65-year-old domestic worker reportedly passed away on Saturday, 2 March, after she was allegedly mauled to death by her employer’s dogs.

SAPS TO PROBE SECUNDA DOMESTIC WORKER’S DEATH

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Colonel Donald Mdhluli said police as well as emergency services personnel in Secunda received a call about the incident from the woman’s employers. An emergency team arrived at the scene and declared that Mngomezulu was no more.

Mdhluli said an inquest case is being investigated by a team of experts in the investigation field.

“The team has so far managed to make some progress in the investigation, one being the confiscation of CCTV footage. Police would like to refute suggestions that there was load shedding during the time of the incident,” he explained.

“There is no way that we can allow a situation to be influenced and be misdirected from the truth, hence the need for an investigation to be conducted,” he explained.

In addition, the police commissioner said the investigation should be objective so that the truth of what has transpired is made known.

“We plead with the family as well as members of the public to allow a space for the investigation team to do their work diligently and not compromise the integrity of this investigation,” Semakaleng said.

TRAGIC: Nearly 500 rhinos killed as poaching increases in South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/animals/nearly-500-rhinos-killed-in-2023-as-poaching-increases-in-south-africa-kruger-national-park/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 11:10:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2016331 Almost 500 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa last year, up 11% on 2022, despite government efforts to tackle the illicit trade in horns, ministers said on Tuesday.

The country is home to a large majority of the world’s rhinos and a hotspot for poaching, which is driven by demand from Asia, where horns are used in traditional medicine for their supposed therapeutic effect.

The environment ministry said 499 of the thick-skinned herbivores were killed in 2023, mostly in state-run parks.

The lion’s share were poached in the KwaZulu-Natal province, with the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park – Africa’s oldest reserve – alone losing 307 animals.

SHOCKER | Shoot a lion for children: NSPCA appalled by school fundraiser

“This is the highest poaching loss within this province,” said Environment Minister Barbara Creecy.

“Multi-disciplinary teams continue to work tirelessly in an attempt to slow this relentless pressure”.

In recent years, authorities have tightened security particularly around the Kruger National Park, a tourist magnet bordering Mozambique that has seen its rhino population fall drastically over the past 15 years.

This has resulted in lower losses there – 78 rhinos were killed in 2023, 37% fewer than in 2022.

But it has also pushed poachers towards regional and private reserves like Hluhluwe-Imfolozi.

Law enforcement agencies arrested 49 suspected poachers in KwaZulu-Natal last year, Creecy said.

Across the country, 45 poachers and horn traffickers were convicted in court, she added.

Among them was a former field ranger sentenced to 10 years behind bars for killing a rhino he later claimed had charged him.

As of 2023, the national parks authority requires new employees to take a lie detector test amid concerns that some workers might be in cahoots with poachers.

Rhino horns are highly sought in black markets where the price per weight rivals that of gold and cocaine.

Nevertheless, in September last year the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reported that thanks to conservation efforts rhino numbers had grown across Africa.

Nearly 23 300 specimens roamed the continent at the end of 2022, up 5.2% on 2021, IUCN said, adding the increase was the first bit of “good news” for the animals in over a decade.

About 15 000 live in South Africa, according to a separate estimate by the International Rhino Foundation.

“While these updated IUCN populations figures provide hope, these gains remain tenuous as long as the poaching crisis continues,” Jeff Cooke of the World Wildlife Fund said Tuesday.

And he described the spike in killings in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal, in particular, as “of grave concern”.

Wetlands are vital for humans, ecosystems and our climate, providing essential ecosystem services such as water regulation, including flood control and water purification,” said DFFE Minister, Barbara Creecy.

What is a Ramsar Site?

FlySafair’s new Cape Town-Kruger route a big boost for tourism https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/flysafair-new-route-cape-town-to-kruger-big-boost-for-tourism/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 13:32:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1983875 Cape Town to Kruger heading your way

In a significant boost for SA’s tourism sector, the introduction of a new flight route by FlySafair will enhance connectivity between two of the nation’s most popular destinations – Cape Town and the Kruger National Park.

FlySafair will kick off twice-weekly flights this year, offering unprecedented convenience and accessibility for both domestic and international tourists.

ALSO READ: FlySafair announces new local route: Here’s where they’re flying to

This new route will significantly stir up tourism, making the most of South Africa’s diverse attractions. Attractions that range from beautiful beaches and modern urban centres to wildlife-rich savannahs and fruitful vineyards.

“FlySafair’s new Cape Town to Kruger route is a blessing for inbound tourism in South Africa. With Cape Town’s international two-way passenger figures soaring to 1.4 million in the first half of 2023 alone, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, and the Kruger Park attracting around 4 million visitors last year, it’s clear that these destinations hold a special place on the global travel map,” David Frost, the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) CEO, said via a statement.

ALSO READ: Cape Town ranks as one of the most affordable places to visit

When do flights begin?

The first flight for this route will start on 2 April and will make use of FlySafair’s Boeing 737-800. Tickets will start at R1851 one-way.

“In addition to enhancing accessibility to the Kruger National Park for residents of the Western Cape, this new route by FlySafair promotes inter-provincial exploration, encouraging tourists to discover a plethora of hidden gems and world-class experiences across South Africa. It’s about inspiring travellers to linger longer and indulge in varied combo travel experiences combining the unique offerings of various provinces,” Frost added.

Frost finished by adding that the new flight service only underlined their emphasis on inclusive growth in the tourism sector.

“We’re committed to ensuring the benefits of increased tourism are spread across communities, particularly focusing on empowering local businesses and historically marginalised groups to partake in the tourism value chain. This route is more than a convenience; it’s a strategic step towards a more interconnected and inclusive South African travel experience,” Frost said.

“We are very pleased to be able to start the year off with such an exciting new route. Although flights to areas surrounding the Kruger National Park are readily available from Johannesburg, there are limited commercial flight options from Cape Town,” Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer of FlySafair said via Travel News.

“Cape Town and the Kruger National Park are two of our country’s most popular tourist destinations. Unfortunately, though, they sit in opposite corners of our country, making travel between them both inconvenient and costly,” Gordon added.

PICTURE | Kruger National Park ranger posts photo of overturned car

In the latest incredible sighting, a Martial eagle killed a young impala between the fifth and eighth holes late last week.

Writing on their Facebook page, the Skukuza Golf Club posted: “A beautiful sighting of a Martial Eagle catching a baby impala on the course. This is the wildest course in the world after all.💁🐾🌱🌎 Expect the unexpected”

Martial eagles are the largest in Africa and possess incredible power, enough to knock an adult man off his feet. They weigh up to 6.5kg and have a wingspan of around 6 feet 4 inches.

The stories of wild animals wandering the fairways and tee boxes at the course is stuff of legend.

Playing 18 holes at Skukuza Golf Club is certainly a unique experience!

It’s not so much the bunkers and water hazards golfers need to be wary off, but rather the wildlife that roams freely.

SANParks urges guests to pre-book Kruger National Park visits https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/kruger-national-park-sanparks-pre-book-visits-festive-season-15-december-2023/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 11:31:01 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1919695 Kruger National Park daily quotas

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has stated that it would be essential for day visitors to pre-book before heading to Kruger National Park this festive season.

ALSO READ: Kruger National Park to go cash-free this festive season

Starting from today, Friday, 15 December 2023 until Tuesday, 16 January 2024, day visitors are reminded that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates and that there are three time slots for pre-bookings to be made prior to arrival, which they can choose from as follows:

  • Time slot 1: 05:30 to 07:30
  • Time slot 2: 07:30 to 09:30
  • Time slot 3: 09:30 onwards

More volume for the holidays

Kruger National Park spokesperson, Ike Phaahla, said via a statement that for busy periods such as the festive season, the park aims to better manage the volumes that are expected, as well as visitors’ expectations.

“The three different time slots are aimed at improving the spread of vehicles and preventing unnecessary waiting periods at gates. The Day Visitor Quota for the Park is a management tool to prevent overcrowding the roads and facilities; it is applied throughout the year although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays resulting in us having to turn visitors away”, Phaahla said.

SANParks also stated that pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but they must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots.

Arriving outside the booked time slot will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away.

Kruger National Park to go cash-free this festive season https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/kruger-national-park-sanparks-cash-free-gates-december-7-december-2023/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 12:14:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1909711 No more cash at these Kruger National Park gates

The Kruger National Park (KNP) will be going cash-free as of Friday, 1 December at five of its entrance gates found in the southern part of the park as well as fuel stations.

According to a statement from South African National Parks (SANParks), this is part of a broader cash-free digital drive, which they introduced in 2021 to improve customer convenience and reduce contact time at entry points, especially during peak times.

ALSO READ: Five fantastic tips to have the best road trip this festive season

The cash-free payment system at Kruger National Park will be implemented in a two-phased approach at some facilities, while the remaining gates and camps will go online in early 2024.

The entrance gates which will be launching the cash-free payment methods include:

  • Paul Kruger Gate
  • Phabeni Gate
  • Numbi Gate
  • Malelane Gate
  • Crocodile Bridge Gate

ALSO READ: Three KZN North Coast beaches awarded Blue Flags

According to KNP Managing Executive, Oscar Mthimkhulu, the benefit of implementing a cash-free payment system is meant to reduce queues further and impact the time it takes to get into a park.

“The aim is also to reduce the risks associated with handling cash. We therefore would like to encourage clients to make use of either the online pre-booking payment systems which offer no hassle of having to transact on arrival or speed point payment systems at the gates,” Mthimkhulu said.

“Skukuza Rest Camp fuel station will also be using the new card payment handheld devices. Guests are encouraged to support the phasing out of cash transactions in the KNP; assisting us to a step towards environmental responsibility” Mthimkhulu added.
