Five men and five women, who are “reportedly foreign nationals”, were on their way to Johannesburg when the accident happened just before midnight on Tuesday, the government said in a statement.

Bus driver was ‘new in his job’

“The bus drove over a roundabout… at high speed, lost control and overturned, killing and injuring its passengers in the process,” it said.

According to authorities, the driver was “new in his job, and not familiar with the surroundings”.

The injured passengers were taken to local hospitals.

South Africa has one of the most developed road networks on the continent but also one of the worst road safety records, in part due to reckless driving and vehicles that are not roadworthy.

In the worst road accident in South Africa this year, 45 people heading to a religious event were killed in March when their bus plunged off a bridge into a ravine in the north of the country.

The local government “has sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased and has also urged motorists to be alert of their surroundings and drive with caution, at all times,” it said.

The South African website sends its condolences to all concerned.

Warning issued as three young men die after using coals to keep warm https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/warning-issued-as-three-young-men-die-after-using-coals-to-keep-warm/ Sun, 07 Jul 2024 13:12:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2135415 Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has warned against using braziers in households, rooms, or sleeping spaces during this chilling winter season after three young men died after they allegedly slept with fire coals in their bedroom.

Police in Mankweng have launched an investigation after three young men aged between 14 and 22 were found dead in their bedroom on Friday morning, 5 July, at Morongwa Park in Ga-Mothiba.

THREE YOUNG MEN FOUND DEAD IN THEIR BEDROOM

South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said reports indicated that the police were summoned to the scene, and upon arrival, they found the lifeless bodies of the three males.

Ledwaba said preliminary investigations established that the three young men who shared a bedroom went to sleep on Thursday, 4 July, at around 21:00, and they took along a braai stand with fire coals to their room.

The following day, on Friday, 5 July, at around 5:00, their family realised that the boys were motionless. They immediately called the police and emergency services. Sadly, the boys were certified dead at the scene.

As mentioned above, in her warning, Hadebe pointed out that inhaling the brazier and other related fires has proven to be a dangerous practice and has the potential to cause harm or death.

In a separate incident in 2023, Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Daphney Manamela pleaded with members of the community to take extra precautions when using various items or equipment to warm themselves during winter in order to prevent loss of life.

“Though it is very cold, we advise our people to rather ensure that there is ventilation by opening windows whenever they are using things like coals to make fire,” she said.

The warning came after a man lost his life while his wife was rushed to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Kgabo Mahoai: Government defends hiring ex-Dirco DG linked to dodgy R100m deal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/limpopo-mec-treasury-kgabo-mahoai-linked-dirco-new-york-r100-million-deal/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 15:59:41 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2124378 The Limpopo provincial government has defended the appointment of former Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) Director-General Kgabo Mahoai.

Mahoai was appointed as Limpopo Treasury MEC by newly-elected Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba this week.

EX-DIRCO EMPLOYEE KGABO MAHOAI CONTROLLING THE PURSE IN LIMPOPO

Limpopo provincial spokesperson Ndavhe Ramakuela told The South African that they had noted the labour relations matter between Mahoai and his erstwhile employer Dirco.

He said the province had further noted that the process continues, where Mohoai challenges the validity of his dismissal through arbitration and, subsequently, the Labour court.

“The premier is convinced that since Mahoai has not been charged for corruption or criminally charged on the matter, nothing in law prevents his appointment to the executive council.

“She believes he possesses skills and expertise that would propel the province to a better position,” the spokesperson explained.

RAMATHUBA APPOINTS VBS-LINKED MEC

Ramathuba also appointed Florence Radzilani who has been linked to the VBS heist as MEC for Social Development.

Termed by advocate Terry Motau as the “greatest bank heist”, South Africa’s first black-owned bank imploded in 2018.

Months after the reserve bank placed VBS under curatorship, Motau published his report detailing the grave degree of looting that was going on behind the bank depositors’ backs.

According to the report, an estimated sum of R2 billion was allegedly looted by those linked with VBS, R300 000 of which was allegedly awarded to Radzilani.

In her defence, the former Vhembe mayor said the R30 million investment was not authorised by her, neither was she ever in receipt of R300 000 from VBS.

“I still maintain that I had nothing to do with VBS. The matter in Terry Motau’s report where I’m implicated, it is a WhatsApp conversation between two people and my phone was never requested to check if indeed I had a conversation with the two people mentioned in the report.

“Even the investigators never afforded me the opportunity to be heard,” she explained.

OPPOSITION IS APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE NEW EXECUTIVE

The Democratic Alliance (DA) said the appointment of Kgabo Mahoai as the MEC of Treasury is concerning.

“Mahoai was axed by the Directorate of International Relations and cooperation for an irregular expenditure of R118 million to obtain land in New York, which never materialised. Mahoai has now been given the cookie jar of the Province and will manage its finances. Clearly, he is an unsuitable candidate given his history.

“Re-elected Florence Radzilani, as MEC of Social Development is a red flag for the DA. Radzilani was called out on the VBS heist in an ongoing investigation, but she is called upon to manage a critical portfolio with a large budget,” DA caucus leader in Limpopo Lindy Wilson said.

New Limpopo Treasury MEC Kgabo Mahoai was fired from Dirco over dodgy R100m deal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/politics/kgabo-mahoai-biography-limpopo-treasury-mec-dirco-director-general/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 14:17:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2123278 Fired as director-general from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), Kgabo Mahoai has landed a cushy new job as the MEC for Treasury in Limpopo.

Mahoai was named earlier this week among the MECs announced by newly-elected Limpopo premier and former Health MEC in the province, Dr Phophi Ramathuba.

KGABO MAHOAI RESURFACES AS TREASURY MEC IN LIMPOPO

In 2021, The South African reported that Dirco Minister Naledi Pandor fired Mahoai over a botched New York land deal worth R118 million.

Mahoai faced charges related to irregular expenditure incurred by Dirco over an unsuccessful project to purchase a piece of land in New York for the purposes of constructing premises to accommodate South Africa’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and New York Consulate.

A disciplinary hearing found that in March 2017, Mahoai – then acting director-general – gave the green light for a payment of close to R118 million to a company called Serendipity SA Investment LLC for the New York property, without a legally valid basis and despite Treasury having not approved it.

In his defence, Mahoai claimed in the disciplinary hearing that the R118 million pre-payment had been approved by his predecessor as director-general, Jerry Matjila, who had left to become South Africa’s ambassador to the UN.

The South African reached out to the Limpopo provincial government to find out whether Ramathuba was aware of Mahoai’s dismissal and if she was not concerned that someone fired for gross negligence and irregular expenditure was now in charge of the province’s purse.

Spokesperson Ndavhe Ramakuela had not responded at the time of publication.

DA SLAMS APPOINTMENT OF FORMER DG

The Democratic Alliance (DA) said in a statement on Thursday that hoped it had Ramathuba would select a provincial cabinet that was without skeletons in the closet and able to direct Limpopo towards addressing poor service delivery and the plight of the poor, as the province had consistently under-performed at every level in the last five years.

“More concerning is the appointment of Kgabo Mahoai as the MEC of Treasury. Mahoai was axed by the Directorate [sic] of International Relations and Cooperation for an irregular expenditure of R118 million to obtain land in New York, which never materialised.

“Mahoai has now been given the cookie jar of the province and will manage its finances. Clearly, he is an unsuitable candidate given his history,” DA caucus leader in Limpopo, Lindy Wilson, said.

Two women allegedly robbed and raped during a prayer session https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/two-women-allegedly-robbed-and-raped-during-a-prayer-session-seshego-limpopo/ Sun, 19 May 2024 08:52:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2097794 Police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who allegedly raped two women during a prayer session at Dikoting section Moletji, Mmotong in Limpopo.

The incident happened on Thursday, 16 May,  at about 17:30.

WOMEN ALLEGEDLY RAPED DURING PRAYER SESSION

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said two women, aged 33 and 42, were threatened with a firearm, taken to the bushes, and raped while they were attending a prayer session in the open field.

Ledwaba said it is alleged that the victims were accompanied by their two children in the bushes for prayer services when an unknown African male suddenly appeared and pointed at them with a firearm.

The alleged criminal demanded cellphones, and robbed one child of a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash. He further instructed the victims to walk with him, leaving the children behind.

“Another suspect later joined him, and they then instructed the victims to undress themselves and raped them. They fled the scene after that horrific ordeal,” Ledwaba said.

The police are pleading with the community to come forward with information to assist with the investigations to Captain David Masia at 071 355 0554, crime stop number 0860010111, the nearest police station, or share information on MySAPSApp.

TEACHER REMANDED IN CUSTODY

In a separate incident, a 47-year-old primary school teacher from North West was remanded in custody for alleged rape of two minors.

The teacher appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 17 May.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the North West, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, said the teacher was arrested on Thursday, 16 May, at Leeudoringstad. The mother and the principal of the two minors, aged 12 and 14, registered cases at the local police station on Tuesday, 14 May.

Funani said it is alleged that the teacher would ask the two minors to help him carry books or go and fetch something at his office, where he performed sexual acts.

“He was arrested at the school on Thursday, 16 May. The accused was remanded in custody until Tuesday, 21 M, for a formal bail application.

45 congregants heading to Moria killed in a bus crash in Limpopo https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/45-people-killed-bus-crash-moria-limpopo/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 18:16:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2052540 The Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has sent condolences to the families of the 45 people who were killed in an accident on the R518 near Mamatlakala heading to Moria in Limpopo.

A bus transporting congregants from Botswana fell off a bridge, crashed and caught fire on Thursday morning, 28 March.

45 CONGREGANTS HEADING TO MORIA PERISH IN BUS CRASH

According to the Department of Transport, the horrific bus crash claimed the lives of 45 people while one person was seriously injured.

The sole survivor is reportedly an eight-year-old.

Following the accident, Chikunga said their thoughts and prayers are with the families affected during this difficult time.

“We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with heightened alertness as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend,” Chikunga said.

“The SAPS continues to provide updates as the rescue and recovery efforts unfold. It is alleged that the driver lost control, colliding with barriers on the bridge, causing the bus to go over the bridge and hit the ground, where it caught fire.

“The Minister assures the public that the precise cause of the crash is under thorough investigation,” Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi said.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) in Moria, Limpopo, on Easter Sunday, 31 March.

MOTORISTS URGED TO BE VIGILANT ON THE ROAD

The accident comes as Chikunga urged the implementation of roadblocks on major routes and residential areas to curb reckless behaviour this Easter weekend.

Chikunga said they anticipate peak periods starting on Thursday, 28 March, and extending until Sunday, 31 March, with particularly heavy traffic on Monday, 1 April.

Several motorists have already been arrested for drinking and driving, high speed and other violations.

With an eye on an international airport licence, Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport plans to launch international flights after high demand.

According to Travel News, Esmaralda Barnes, Chief Operating Officer of Eastgate Airport revealed that they were already in very early stages of discussions with the relevant stakeholders who are responsible for issuing an international licence.

“Suffice it to say, the announcements made by the Limpopo Province and the Mayor of Maruleng show support and a necessity for HDS to be issued with the international licence,” Barnes stated via Travel News, estimating that the licence could be confirmed by the end of 2024.

Phala Phala farm theft suspects to appear in court https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/phala-phala-suspects-to-appear-in-court-cyril-ramaphosa-7-november-2023/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 07:23:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1866844 Two suspects arrested for alleged theft at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm are expected to  make their first appearance in the Bela Bela Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 7 November.

The two suspects aged 30 and 39 were arrested on Sunday, 5 November 2023 and Monday, 6 November 2023 respectively on charges of house breaking and theft.

TWO ARRESTED FOR THEFT AT PHALA PHALA GAME FARM

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale said the pair was arrested in Rustenburg and Bela Bela respectively, by the members of the National Serious Corruption Investigation in relation to the Phalaphala farm break-in in February 2020.

“The arrest of the third suspect is imminent,” Mogale said.

BACKGROUND: HOW WE GOT HERE

In June 2022, former spy boss Arthur Fraser laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa, claiming that he concealed the theft of R62 million that had been kept on his farm in Phala Phala, Limpopo two years before.

He also alleged that the suspects were kidnapped and interrogated, before being offered money for their silence. Ramaphosa subsequently admitted there was a robbery on his property, but denied being criminally liable and says the monies stolen were proceeds from the sale of cattle on his farm.

As previously reported, Sudanese businessman Hazim Mustafa confirmed that he purchased the animals in cash over the festive period in 2019. He told Sky News that he was in Limpopo to celebrate Christmas and his wife’s birthday and brought the cash through the airport because “$580 000 is nothing for a businessman like [him].”
