The teacher appeared in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 17 May.

TEACHER APPEARS IN COURT FOR ALLEGED RAPE

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the North West, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, said the teacher was arrested on Thursday, 16 May, at Leeudoringstad. The mother and the principal of the two minors, aged 12 and 14, registered cases at the local police station on Tuesday, 14 May.

Funani said it is alleged that the teacher would ask the two minors to help him carry books or go and fetch something at his office, where he performed sexual acts.

“He was arrested at the school on Thursday, 16 May. The accused was remanded in custody until Tuesday, 21 May, for a formal bail application.”

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident.

Kwena said it was sad that the victims were allegedly abused by someone who was supposed to protect them.

TWO TEENS IMPREGNATED BY ALLEGED RAPIST

In 2022, a 26-year-old teacher also appeared in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate’s Court in Eastern Cape. He was arrested for the alleged rape of two minors.

The alleged rapist teacher was employed at Ntsizwa High School in the Eastern Cape at the time where both victims are enrolled.

The accused reportedly forced himself on the grade 12 learners in the school’s strong room on multiple occasions.

“He would allegedly lure the victims to the strong room, lock it from the inside, overpower them, rape them, and threaten them if they told anyone,” said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Luxulo Tyali.

Tyali said the victims told their classmates after the alleged rapes. However, the suspect was only arrested after the two informed their parents and they both discovered they were pregnant.

North West Tourism CFO resigns amid residence permit scandal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/north-west-tourism-cfo-zimbabwe-kudakwashe-mpofu-illegal-residence-permit/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 16:39:21 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2042295 The North West Department of Tourism has confirmed that Development Corporation’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Kudakwashe Mpofu, has resigned with immediate effect.

Mpofu’s resignation comes after the Department of Home Affairs called on the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate how he obtained his allegedly fraudulent permanent residence permit.

NORTH WEST TOURISM CFO RESIGNS

On Sunday, 17 March, Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that Mpofu did not obtain his residence permit through his department.

Motsoaledi said the Zimbabwean national was informed as early as June 2023 that his permit was invalid. However, he continued with his job.

“How did the North West Development Corporation’s Human Resources unit employ Mr Mpofu without performing due diligence? Because it is the duty of each prospective employer to perform such before they hire anybody,” Motsoaledi asked.

Motsoaledi described Mpofu’s scandal as a national embarrassment.

“It is a matter of national embarrassment that Mr Mpofu was able to obtain employment as the CFO at the North West Department of Economic Development handling public funds. After ascertaining these facts about Mpofu, I immediately phoned the acting premier of North West, Nono Maloyi, and he told me that Mr Mpofu has already been suspended,” Motsoaledi added.

MEC Galebekwe Tlhapi said the management of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism and the CEO of the NWDC will fully cooperate with the SIU regarding the CFO’s matter.

WHO IS KUDAKWASHE MPOFU?

Mpofu was born in Zvishavane, Zimbabwe and completed his schooling in his native country.

He completed a Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Chartered Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg in 2014.

According to his LinkedIn profile, he joined SNG Grant Thorton, an audit and advisory firm, from 2015 to 2021 as assistant manager. Thereafter joined the NWDC on 1 May 2021 as an asset manager. A year later, he was promoted to CFO.

Eskom announces 16-hour power outage in North West https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/eskom-north-west-power-outage-mmabatho-danville/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 05:02:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1964751 Eskom says it will implement a 16-hour power outage in North West due to planned maintenance.

The maintenance is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 24 January from 8:00 until 00:30 on Thursday, 25 January.

MAJOR POWER OUTAGE IN NORTH WEST TODAY

In a brief statement, Eskom said electricity supply will be interrupted in Danville Ext 2 and Lupine area on 24 January 2024 from 08:00 until 00:30 for maintenance.

“Customers are urged to treat all installations as live during this period. Apologies for the inconvenience,” the power utility said.

SIX TIPS TO MITIGATE AGAINST RISKS CAUSED BY ROLLING BLACKOUTS:

  • Make use of surge protection: Electric surges are one of the biggest causes of damage to equipment during a power outage. Installing a surge protection device can help minimise some damage in unforeseen situations. Have a surge protection device fitted to your electrical distribution board or at the power outlet to the electronic device.
  • Ensure that your alarm system is working and the backup battery is fully functional to provide power to the system in the event of load shedding.
  • Spare torch or headlamp: Keep a torch in your car if you arrive home at night during a power outage. Most smartphones have built-in torch or torch apps, which come in handy during unexpected power outages.
  • Emergency contact information: Save emergency contact information on your phone, but also keep a paper copy safe and accessible. This should include contacts for emergency services such as the fire department, police, and/or medical services. Also include the contact information of friends and/or family along with insurance information.
  • Charge your cell phone, laptop, and tablet: Ensure your cellphone, laptop, and tablet devices are fully charged ahead of scheduled blackouts. Be sure to charge them again as soon as possible after the power returns. It’s also a good idea to have an emergency phone charger (like a power bank) close by. This comes in handy during extended power outages.

According to the Weather Service, high temperatures might well continue until at least Tuesday in certain provinces.

Here’s what to expect from the rising heat, and how to stay safe when faced with the consequences of a severe heatwave.

Weather Service says heatwaves continue

The SAWS have announced that the intensive heat conditions experienced by some of South Africa’s provinces are likely to continue until at least Tuesday.

A heatwave is defined as a higher-than-normal temperature, which usually lasts for at least two to three days at a time.

Gauteng is expected to be especially affected by the continuing weather; some of the weather notices have also been issued for Kwazulu-Natal, as high temperatures might continue for this part of the country.

Weather warnings for the week

Warnings for the week include more heat for Gauteng, North-West, and Kwazulu-Natal.

Rising temperatures could continue to affect South Africans for a few more days this week, and might last until at least Tuesday, says the SAWS.

Temperatures might rise above 30 degrees Celsius.

Heatwave survival tips

According to the website Healthline, heatstroke is one of the health conditions that can be associated with higher (or extreme) temperatures.

Higher temperatures have already affected parts of the country for days, and the hotter temperature might still continue for several days more to come.

Here’s what we know about the heat, and how South Africans can keep an eye on the coming heatwave.

Heatwave persists for HOTTER country

The South African Weather Service have warned South Africans against a continuation of the heatwave affecting the country.

While South Africans have already been feeling the rise in temperature for several days, it might continue well into the weekend for some of its provinces.

The country is experiencing temperatures above thirty-degrees Celsius, which classifies as a heatwave. Some have reported temperatures higher than have been measured in decades.

Heatwave

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a heatwave is defined as any ‘heat that can last for several days, [and] can have a significant impact on society.’

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in North West, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone it is alleged that a 32-year-old woman cooked meal (pap, chicken feet and wheat) for the family, on Friday, 17 November 2023, at Regorogile in Sonop outside Brits.

All the family members and their neighbours’ three children ate the meal and everybody went to sleep.

Did you feel it? A 4.5 magnitude earthquake reported in Orkney https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/earthquake-orkney-north-west-4-5-magnitude-damage-latest-news-17-november-2023/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 07:34:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1882160 A 4.5 magnitude earthquake has been reported in Orkney, North West on Friday, 17 November.

The quake reportedly happened around 05:50.

EARTHQUAKE REPORTED IN ORKNEY

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was recorded 5km from Orkney.

A number of residents took to social media to share that they felt the seismic activity, however, it is not yet clear if there was any damage.

As previously reported by The South African, following a damaging 4.9 magnitude earthquake also in Orkney in 2014, Professor Andrzej Kijko of the University of Pretoria’s Natural Hazard Centre said that 95% of South Africa’s tremors were caused by mining, especially around the areas of Klerksdorp, Welkom and Carletonville.

“Mining in South Africa is leading to enormous stress factors being created. If there is a natural fault weakness 6km underground, the stresses caused by mining can easily activate it. In South Africa one can easily expect earthquakes of such magnitude to occur every five to seven years,” he said.

Police officers tied with ropes and attacked in Rustenburg https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/police-officers-attacvked-freedom-park-rustenburg-north-west-12-november-2023/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 16:23:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1874631 Five suspects who allegedly attacked police officers with knobberies near Rustenburg will appear before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane in North West on Monday, 13 November.

The incident happened in Freedom Park outside Rustenburg on Thursday, 9 November.

POLICE OFFICERS ATTACKED IN RUSTENBURG

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), two detectives from Phokeng police station were officially on duty and conducting investigations in Freedom Park.

The members found a 51-year-old suspect wanted for assault. They warned the suspect accordingly and requested him to accompany them to the police station.

The suspect then allegedly blew a whistle, and members of the community gathered at his place and locked the gate, tied up the police officers with ropes, and assaulted them with knobkerries.

SAPS said the police officers were also robbed of their cellphones, while the State motor vehicle was damaged.

“Subsequently, Public Order Police (POP) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) members rescued the pair, who sustained serious injuries.”

SUSPECTS TO APPEAR BEFORE COURT

The suspects, aged between 24 and 51, were arrested for robbery, assault on police officers, aiding a suspect to escape, and malicious property damage. They are expected to appear on Monday before the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane.

North West Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena condemned the incident and said it is tantamount to undermining the authority of the State.

Witchcraft in SA: Is gogo bewitched…or ill? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/south-africa/witchcraft-in-sa-is-gogo-bewitched-or-ill-12-october-2023/ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/south-africa/witchcraft-in-sa-is-gogo-bewitched-or-ill-12-october-2023/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2023 07:36:17 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1826956 Witchcraft accusations against the elderly is a huge concern in Southern Africa, according to information released by the Kwazulu-Natal Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

Wrongful accusations of witchcraft against older people is often tied to dementia and other mental health conditions. Accusations from community and family members lead to wrongful persecution of innocent people, behaviour which has been highlighted by the Premier during an October talk.

Here’s what to know about witchcraft accusations, and why this happens.

Witchcraft: Premier condemns accusations

Kwazulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has condemned accusations against elderly people.

According to an October statement, accusations are often aimed at older persons with dementia and other mental health conditions.

The onset of mental health conditions is sometimes wrongfully believed to be signs of bewitchment or possession. According to scientific studies, this is a commonly held belief throughout Africa.

Accusations expose older and vulnerable persons to potential abuse and exploitation, based on the wrongful belief that they are taken over by evil forces.

Witchcraft and the elderly

Dementia and related mental health conditions could lead to abnormal behaviour and speech patterns, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Scientific studies say that conditions affecting behaviour is often misinterpreted and seen as signs of possession or bewitching by communities. The South African Pagan Rights Alliance (SAPRA) points out that “witch hunts” are common even in South Africa.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to these accusations, according to a 2020 scientific study.

No, gogo isn’t bewitched, gogo is ill.

What is dementia?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, dementia is “a general term” for a group of mental health conditions that can interfere with daily life. Memory and language loss, as well as thinking abilities and problem-solving skills start to be affected from dementia and related health conditions.

Persons with dementia can become more forgetful, revert back to a childlike state, or could even become confused and agitated or violent.

Sometimes these strange behaviours are mistaken for witchcraft, though are actually caused by a degenerative medical condition like dementia.
