According to the Western Cape government, violence in the minibus taxi industry reached ‘record highs’ in 2023 during the prolonged strike. The city also warns that crime at transport interchanges (taxi ranks) is worryingly high, too.

As a result, being able to instantly identify dodgy taxis in South Africa is important. 70% of the greater population uses public transport on a daily basis. Now, a taxi association in Kariega, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, has launched an innovative new project, reports GroundUp. The simple but effective scheme sees taxis affixed with stickers on the front and back of the vehicle to help identify them in the event of a crime.

Moreover, the scheme will act as an incentive for taxi owners/operators to behave themselves. UDTA’s Mbuyiseli Mfengu says now they will be able to ‘know who the thugs are’, and the industry will come to stability. Specifically, the 460 taxis in the Uitenhage and District Taxi Association (UDTA) will wear the identifying number. And inside the vehicle there’s an emergency number to call in case of trouble.

Mfengu says crimes involving taxis can be reported directly to the association offices. “We will punish a driver or owner if they are one of our members. This project will reduce crime and improve road safety because taxi drivers visiting taverns will be identifiable. We vow to instantly dismiss any wrongdoers and report the guilty to the police,” said Mfengu. Furthermore, Mthuthuzeli Madwara of SANTACO in the Eastern Cape says taxis are often involved in crime and UDTA is setting a good example with this initiative. He believes the sticker system should be adopted by all 94 taxi associations in the province.

More Eastern Cape name changes? East London up next https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/more-eastern-cape-name-changes-east-london-up-next/ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/more-eastern-cape-name-changes-east-london-up-next/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2024 14:23:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159716 East London, Aberdeen, and Colchester in the Eastern Cape province are among the towns next up for name changes according to Sibulele Ngongo, the Eastern Cape MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

East London not the only city on the list

According to Business Tech, Ngongo stated in her policy address that her department is moving ahead with further name changes in the Eastern Cape province. The government is considering changing the names of East London, Aberdeen, and Colchester, among others.

The Eastern Cape has seen a number of name changes over the last few years, which included changing Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha.

Markedly, it is not the first time the government is considering a name change for East London. Getaway magazine reported that, in 2020, the government rejected an application to change East London’s name because the proposed name conflicted with an existing settlement with the same name.

SAGNC currently looking at 66 applications for name changes

Currently, the South African Geographic Names Council (SAGNC) is reviewing a total of 66 renaming applications across the country. Since its establishment in 1998, it has renamed 1 505 geographical features across South Africa. These included towns, post offices, mountains, and rivers.

The SAGNC is comprised of experts in place names, official languages, and cultural history, as well as one representative from each province and representatives from the Chief Directorate of Survey and Mapping, the SA Post Office, and the Pan South African Language Board.

Eastern Cape cities that have undergone name changes

Several South African cities have already undergone name changes in recent years.

In the Eastern Cape alone, the following are the most recent name changes:

  • Port Elizabeth’s name changed to Gqeberha
  • Queenstown became Komani
  • Uitenhage is now Kariega
  • Fort Beaufort’s name changed to Kwa-Maqoma
  • Somerset East is now KwaNojoli

The government also changed the names of two airports in the Eastern Cape. Port Elizabeth airport is now Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport. East London airport is now King Phalo Airport.

Costs involved

Changing a city’s name is a costly endeavour – not only for the government but also for individuals. The government needs to pay to change road signs, which could include many signs for hundreds of kilometres.

Individuals, however, are also impacted, especially those who run businesses. Businesses have to update systems, stationery, business cards, etc.

Do you think changing the names of places in South Africa is necessary?
Is the cost involved worth it?

Malema’s public firearm discharge case postponed to November https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/julius-malema-public-firearm-discharge-case-postponed-to-november/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 15:39:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2123563 The East London Regional Court has postponed the public firearm discharge case against the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, to 1 November for closing arguments.

Malema has been in court this week where he testified and was also cross-examined by the defence. On Thursday, 20 June, the defence closed its case.

MALEMA’S FIREARM DISCHARGE CASE POSTPONED

Malema and security company director Adriaan Snyman are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharge of a firearm in a built-up area, failure to take reasonable precaution to person or property, and reckless endangerment to person or property.

As previously reported, Malema allegedly fired a rifle at an EFF rally in Mdantsane, East London, in 2018.

The EFF was celebrating its fifth anniversary in East London. In a video that was widely circulated on social media platforms, party leaders could be seen dancing and singing on the stage and then Malema allegedly is seen firing the rifle into the air before he hands it over to Adriaan Snyman. Malema then give’s EFF chairman Dali Mpofu a high five

The firearm allegedly belongs to a company where Synman is the director. However, during court proceedings, Malema insisted that the rifle was a toy. He did not carry a firearm with live ammunition on the day.

In 2023, Malema and Snyman subsequently applied for a discharge, according to Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act, which the court dismissed.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in Eastern Cape, Luxolo Tyali said from Tuesday, 18 June, the defence led the evidence of two expert witnesses, in firearms control and forensic ballistics, for Snyman. Malema took the stand in his defence.

“All the witnesses were cross-examined by advocate Joel Cesar for the state, after which the matter was postponed for all parties to submit written heads of arguments before the next court appearance,” Tyali explained.

Eastern Cape floods: Ten dead, search still on for missing people https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/eastern-cape-floods-search-still-on-for-missing-people-following/ Sun, 09 Jun 2024 16:05:15 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2114917 The South African Police Service (SAPS) is still searching for unaccounted-for people following recent floods in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro area in the Eastern Cape.

To date, at least ten people have been reported to have drowned or died in the recent floods since Sunday, 2 June.

POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING PEOPLE FOLLOWING RECENT FLOODS IN EASTERN CAPE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said it is alleged that on Saturday, 1 June, severe storms and heavy rains battered and caused extreme damage in many areas of the metro, particularly  Kwanobuhle, Kariega, Walmer, Blue Horizon Bay, and Kamesh.

Naidu said in Kwanobuhle, four deceased persons were found; Kamesh, Kabega Park, Chatty, and Walmer reported one each, with Kariega reporting two deaths.

On Sunday, the body of the tenth victim, a female who was reported missing in Kariega, was recovered this afternoon on the Swartkops river bank in Cuyler Street. The victim went missing together with a friend when their car was washed away on 1 June in Kariega. The vehicle was also found submerged in water.

“Inquest dockets are opened in all of the above drownings. Searches for people who have not yet been accounted for are continuing by the SAPS K9 Search and Rescue and Diving Units,” she said.

SCORES OF PEOPLE RELOCATED DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS

Last weekend, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said a man and a baby died in Kariega, while four women remain missing.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said rescuers safely relocated at least 70 people to various mustering points in 55 operations so far especially in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.

“Officials activated resources during heavy rain on Saturday, 1 June, at around 22:45,” Lambinon said at the time.

Rescue crews also recovered one man from a newly formed island in the river, but a woman was swept away. They found the other four people safe on the south bank.

Multiple rescue operations recovered persons safely from buildings, residences and vehicles.

Makazole Mapimpi Foundation gives back to the community https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/makazole-mapimpi-foundation-gives-back-community/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 12:58:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2113578 The Springbok winger may be uncertain over a starting position in the 2024 Bok squad, but through his Makazole Mapimpi Foundation, he’s doing great things off the pitch. Announced this week, the Makazole Mapimpi Foundation is giving back to the community in the Eastern Cape with the help of Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA).

Together, both organisations announced a strategic partnership to realise community development in the Eastern Cape. Like its founder, the Makazole Mapimpi Foundation hopes to positively impact lives in the provinces through sport, music, culture, education and development.

WHAT IS THE MAKAZOLE MAPIMPI FOUNDATION?

“We are thrilled to partner with Mercedes-Benz South Africa in our mission to empower the youth and build stronger communities. Together, we will harness the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change and create opportunities for the next generation,” said Mapimpi.

Moreover, a partnership between the Makazole Mapimpi Foundation and MBSA is a natural alignment not just because of the geography of MBSA’s East London plant. Both have shared values and visions, focusing on harnessing the potential and power of youth to shape the future. Better still, the foundation will begin its initiatives in the Eastern Cape, with a view to expand into other parts of South Africa.

“We see immense value in supporting the dreams and aspirations of young South Africans. Through this MMF collaboration, we hope to provide resources to the youth for future success,” said MBSA’s Abey Kgotle. Both organisations will leverage their respective strengths to empower local youth to reach their full potential. And, together, they hope to continue to drive positive change across South Africa.

Six suspects arrested for disrupting elections in the Eastern Cape https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/six-suspects-arrested-for-disrupting-elections-in-the-eastern-cape-mqanduli/ Thu, 30 May 2024 08:55:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2107014 Six suspects, aged between 24 and 51, were arrested at Emavundleni locality, Qhingqolo, Eastern Cape for disrupting elections and contravening the Electoral Act.

The six were arrested on Tuesday, 28 May, and in the early hours of Wednesday, 29 May.

SIX SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR DISRUPTING ELECTIONS

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Captain Welile Matyolo, said it is alleged that on Sunday, 26 May, at about 16:00, alleged suspects complaining of service delivery in the area destroyed a voting station in the form of a tent.

A case was opened to that effect, and on Monday, 27 May, the same group threatened IEC officials to close the station as no one would vote.

Again, on Tuesday, 28 May, the same group mobilised road blockage, burning tyres, preventing any movement in the area.

Matyolo said the OR Tambo District detective election team, assisted by Public Order Policing members, conducted an operation on Tuesday, 27 May, and arrested six suspects charged with contravening the Electoral Act.

“They have been detained at Mqanduli police station and will appear at the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 01 June,” Matyolo said.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION CRITICISED FOR LONG LINES

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has been criticised following marathon queues, network failures, technical glitches and a general lack of preparedness during the national and provincial elections on Wednesday, 29 May.

Voting stations were supposed to close at 21:00 on Wednesday, however, queues at several voting stations run by the Electoral Commission of South Africa still snaked out the doors and around the blocks, forcing citizens to endure an arduous wait to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Blocked roads, looting and violence reported in the Eastern Cape https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/mthatha-eastern-cape-taxi-violence-looting-iec-elections-latest-news/ Mon, 27 May 2024 12:35:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2104963 Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes as several roads coming into and out of Mthatha in the Eastern Cape are closed due to alleged taxi violence.

Trucks were also allegedly looted during the blockading of roads on Monday, 27 May.

VIOLENCE AND LOOTING INCIDENTS REPORTED IN EASTERN CAPE

Earlier on Monday, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, confirmed that the main road, the N2 and the R61, was closed.

Naidu said five suspects were arrested at about 9:00 after shots were fired at Public Order Policing and Mthatha Vispol members.

“Two suspects sustained injuries while the other three were arrested. Two firearms were also confiscated. A case of attempted murder and possession of firearms is opened for further investigation.

“Public Order Policing, the National Intervention Unit, and Tactical Response Teams are in Mthatha policing the situation,” she explained.

The Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, warned people circulating videos and messages that appear to incite unrest.

Mene said such actions are not only irresponsible but also illegal.

“We will take strict action against anyone found to be engaging in activities that threaten the safety and security of the public and the integrity of the election process,” Mene said.

PROVINCIAL NATJOINTS CONFIDENT ELECTION PERIOD WILL RUN SMOOTHLY

The incidents in the Eastern Cape happened just hours after the provincial Natjoints assured that everything is ready for the national and provincial government elections commencing Monday, 27, through Wednesday, 29 May.

On Sunday, the Eastern Cape police commissioner indicated that the SAPS is ready to deploy sufficient members throughout the province to ensure that the election process takes place peacefully at the 4 868 polling stations.

The Eastern Cape ProvJOINTS is a multi-stakeholder platform representing the national and provincial spheres. Its main objective is to support all role players in ensuring the smooth running of the election process.

“The safety and integrity of our election process are paramount, and we have taken extensive measures to ensure a secure and peaceful voting environment.

“We would like to assure communities that all safety and security measures are in place and that every citizen in this province can exercise their democratic right to vote in a safe and secure environment,” Mene said.

In addition, Mene said certain areas had been identified as hotspot areas, which they have categorised as low, medium, or high-risk areas.

She said they have implemented measures to mitigate potential threats through threat assessment.

“Deployments to these areas are by the level of risk identified through intensified operations. To meet the increased demand for security, we have deployed additional police officers throughout the province. Maximum police members, including specialised units, will be deployed to the 4868 polling stations.

“There will be zero tolerance for criminal activity during the election period. This includes voter intimidation, fraud, violence, and any other action that could undermine the democratic process. Anyone found engaging in such activities will face swift and decisive action. We strongly condemn spreading fake news, unverified information, rumours, or threats as it can cause panic or incite violence in some instances,” she warned.

Relief as EC health department halts circular slashing overtime https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/eastern-cape-health-circular-doctors-overtime-latest-news/ Sun, 05 May 2024 14:02:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2086708 The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has claimed victory after the Eastern Cape Department of Health halted the implementation of a circular on commuted overtime.

The decision came after SAMA and other relevant stakeholders raised their concerns about implementing Circular 34 of 2024 on commuted overtime.

EASTERN CAPE HEALTH HALTS CIRCULAR ON COMMUTED OVERTIME

Many stakeholders have raised their concerns about the circular which threatens the income of medical doctors in public hospitals which are already facing a shortage of doctors

“Pursuant to our virtual meeting held on the 3rd of May 2024, please be informed that, Circular No.34 of 2024 is being put in abeyance, pending the change management engagement sessions with all the stakeholders, which will be concluded within six months,” the department said.

DA GAUTENG RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT LATEST CIRCULAR

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has also raised concerns about the circular saying it threatens to cut the overtime of doctors in Gauteng public hospitals by a quarter as the overtime budget has been slashed from R3.45 billion to R2.65 billion.

Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed the budget cut in a written reply to DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health and Wellness Jack Bloom.

In the response, the MEC said the overtime changes have been made to address inequalities and irregularities on the approval and management of commuted overtime.

Nkomo-Ralehoko said this will lead to a reduction in paid overtime “where there are disparities on the payment of certain categories of clinicians.”

Bloom said doctors have been forced to sign new three-month overtime contracts and many were not paid overtime for April this year.

“R3.45 billion was spent in the last financial year ending on 31 March, only R2.65 million is budgeted for this year, justifying fears that they will suffer a large pay cut.

“The Gauteng Health Department claims the overtime budget cut in the new financial year starting from April is due to terminations, promotions and new appointees. This is a poor excuse which covers up the fact that patients in short-staffed hospitals will suffer as less overtime will be worked by essential doctors,” Bloom said.

Woman dies in a freak accident in Gqeberha harbour https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/woman-dies-in-a-freak-accident-at-the-gqeberha-harbour/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 15:37:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2078734 The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Humewood is investigating an inquest following the drowning of a 32-year-old woman in a freak accident at the Gqeberha harbour.

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, 25 April.

WOMAN DIES IN GQEBERHA HARBOUR

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg alleged that at approximately 3:45, the deceased woman was working at the vehicle terminal.

While driving a Ford Ranger Cab onto the vessel carrier (ship), Van Rensburg said witnesses alleged that the vehicle accelerated and landed in the harbour.

“The woman could not exit the vehicle, which subsequently submerged, and she drowned. Her body was retrieved, and her name is withheld until her next of kin has been informed. An inquest docket is opened for investigation,” she explained.

TWO LEARNERS WHO DROWNED IN CENTURION LAID TO REST

In a separate incident, two learners from Daveyton Skills School in Benoni, Gauteng drowned during a disciplinary camp at the Rockfalls Adventure Ranch in Centurion.

As previously reported by The South African, the Gauteng Department of Education said the two learners, aged 13 and 16, attended a discipline camp held by the non-governmental organisation Rising Stars Generation in Pretoria.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said it is alleged that, after activities had been concluded on Monday afternoon, 15 April, one of the learners suddenly ran towards a nearby river close to the campsite entrance. A second learner followed in an attempt to bring him back.

“It is further alleged that the learner who ran off jumped into the river, prompting the second learner to try and rescue him. However, both learners unfortunately drowned as a result,” he explained.

The bodies were recovered by the South African Police Services (SAPS) divers and the learners were declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

The two boys were laid to rest on Wednesday, 24 April.

Warning issued over Facebook Marketplace after double murder https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/warning-issued-over-facebook-marketplace-after-double-murder-gqeberha/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 06:36:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2062176 The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning the public to vet people they do business with online.

This comes after the tragic news last weekend when two brothers, aged 19 and 30, were robbed and killed after responding to a Facebook Marketplace advert.

Aaron and Kyle Alberts were murdered after approaching a home in Motherwell outside Gqeberha on Saturday, 6 April.

According to the EWN website, the brothers were responding to an advert placed on Facebook Marketplace for a television that they wished to purchase.

“The brothers went to a house in Ceru Steet in NU 5 in Motherwell and were informed that no such ad was placed, and the occupants of the house bore no knowledge of any sale. While still at the address, they were approached by two suspects who shot and robbed them.

“Their cellphones, cash, and vehicles were all taken, with the perpetrators providing the wrong address to mislead them,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu.

Latest incident

Their bakkie was recovered abandoned not far from the scene.

The provincial serious and violent crime investigation unit in Gqeberha is investigating two cases of murder.

Police have called on anyone with information regarding the murders to come forward.

“We appeal to anyone who can assist us in tracing these cold and callous perpetrators to contact D/Capt Monde Sithole on 082 457 2812 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station. All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.”

The latest incident follows an increase in criminals exploiting Facebook Marketplace to rob their victims in South Africa.

These criminals post false ads for multiple items, such as TVs and solar equipment.

However, the most common item listed for sale on false ads is vehicles, with very attractive prices, often too good to be true.

The warning is valid on Sunday, 3 March.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EASTERN CAPE

In an advisory, the weather service said a chance of thundershowers is expected over the Eastern Cape as a surface trough is dominating over the western interior of the country. The trough is coupled with upper air perturbations.

“There is a possibility that the expected storms may be severe and result in impacts,” the weather service said.

ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN THE WESTERN CAPE

Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions are also expected in the Western Cape and Namaqua.

The weather service said a cut-off low-pressure system is expected to produce showers and thundershowers over the Western Cape on Monday, 4 March.

The severe thunderstorms are expected to be strong over the Cape Winelands and Overberg Districts.

This will result in rapid heavy downpours of approximately 20 – 40mm, excessive lightning, strong downdraft, and large amounts of small hail.

Eskom announces 13-hour power outage in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/eskom-announces-13-hour-power-outage-in-the-eastern-cape-on-wednesday/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 09:05:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2022630 Eskom’s planned maintenance will result in a 13-hour power outage in parts of the Eastern Cape.

The maintenance will occur on Wednesday, 6 March, from 5:00 to 18:00.

13-HOUR POWER OUTAGE IN THE EASTERN CAPE

The power utility said communities under the Amahlathi and Enoch Mgijima Local Municipalities will be affected.

“The interruption will be carried out to allow for line maintenance work that will improve network performance and reduce unplanned electricity interruption,” Eskom said.

THE FOLLOWING TOWNS (INCLUDING VILLAGES) WILL BE AFFECTED:

  • Komani
  • Cathcart
  • Tarkastad
  • Whittlesea

Furthermore, Eskom asked all customers affected by the power outage to be patient and treat all electricity appliances as live during the blackout.

TIPS TO MITIGATE AGAINST RISKS CAUSED BY ROLLING BLACKOUTS:

  • Make use of surge protection: Electric surges are one of the biggest causes of damage to equipment during a power outage. Installing a surge protection device can help minimise some damage in unforeseen situations. Have a surge protection device fitted to your electrical distribution board or at the power outlet to the electronic device.
  • Ensure that your alarm system is working and the backup battery is fully functional to provide power to the system in the event of load shedding.
  • Spare torch or headlamp: Keep a torch in your car if you arrive home at night during a power outage. Most smartphones have built-in torch or torch apps, which come in handy during unexpected outages.

The couple Vuyokazi Ndevu, and her operational manager husband, Siyakhangela Ndevu were found guilty of selling alcohol to persons under the age of 18 in the East London regional court on Wednesday.

ENYOBENI TAVERN OWNERS FINED R5000

As previously reported by The South African, the couple was charged in August 2022 after 21 underage youngsters died under mysterious circumstances in their tavern in Scenery Park in the Eastern Cape in June 2022.

The two pleaded not guilty and took the witness stand in their defence, arguing that they complied with all regulations during the tragic incident. They were eventually found guilty on Wednesday.

The court agreed with the State’s submission there was no age restriction considered for access at Enyobeni, whatsoever and the owners failed to take reasonable steps to ensure age restriction admission, in contravention of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act.

MEGA bridges in Eastern Cape finally making progress https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/chinese-mega-bridges-in-eastern-cape-progress/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 08:03:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1961676 Two mega bridges in Eastern Cape are finally making progress towards completion. As we reported back in 2023, in the face of engineering complexity, public unrest and other unforeseen delays, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) could only set to work in earnest on the Mtentu and Msikaba bridges in Eastern Cape last year.

TRENDING: United Kingdom lifts visa requirements for 6 countries: See here

An Engineering News report calls it the flagship N2 Wild Coast Road (N2WCR) project, which covers 410km from the N2 Gonubie Interchange near East London, to the Mtamvuna river bridge, and Port Edward in KwaZulu-Natal.

MEGA BRIDGES IN EASTERN CAPE

The bridges in the Eastern Cape were designed as long ago as 2004. Budget allocation and provision for the construction of the N2 Wild Coast Road was made under SANRAL’s non-toll portfolio. The contract for the construction of the Msikaba Bridge was awarded in September 2018 to Concor (formerly Murray & Roberts) and Mota-Engil Construction South Africa (MECSA), both 100% black-owned Grade 9CE South African construction companies.

The contract for the construction of the Mtentu bridge went to the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and MECSA Construction joint venture (CCCC MECSA JV) on 1 November 2022. CCCC is a JV partner to MECSA and, together, the companies are contracted to construct the Mtentu Bridge on behalf of SANRAL.

The Msikaba bridge spans a 198-m-deep river gorge and is considered to be the most complex structure of its type in Africa. Measuring 580m, it will be the longest cable-stay bridge on the continent. It will also rank as one of Africa’s highest bridges, only exceeded by the Bloukrans bridge at 216m. The Msikaba bridge is earmarked for completion by the end of the year.

MTENTU BRIDGE

It’s early days for the Mtentu bridge, however, progress is being made. Image: File

Once completed, the second of the bridges in Eastern Cape – the Mtentu bridge – will be the highest in Africa. It will also be one of the longest main-span balanced cantilever bridges in the world at 260m. Denmark-based architecture company, Dissing+Weitling, designed both bridges.

ALSO READ: Social Relief of Distress payments begin TODAY

The Mtentu bridge has an estimated budget of R4 billion, creating a minimum of 1 550 full-time jobs for local skilled and unskilled people. Job numbers will vary during the contract period but it’s believed an average of 520 jobs will be created every month for 50 months.

MSIKABA BRIDGE

The Msikaba bridge has an estimated value of R1.75 billion. To date, R553 million has been spent on 44 suppliers, 52 service providers and 61 subcontractors. About R93-million has been spent on wages for local labour. As for economic benefits in the Eastern Cape, the projects have a specified minimum expenditure of 30% on local suppliers. This will see roughly R4 billion flowing to small and medium enterprises in the areas.

WEATHER DIFFICULTIES

Weather has curtailed construction due to the danger on site. Image: File

There were also delays in the construction of the Msikaba bridge caused by surging winds of up to 80 km/h up the gorge, which were so strong that work had to be suspended. Occasionally mist covering the gorge resulted in work having to be suspended, too. We’ll keep a keen eye on these exciting engineering projects in South Africa.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES THAT MOTORISTS CAN USE

  • From East London, follow the R72 to Port Alfred and Kenton on Sea through Nanaga, turn left onto the N2, and continue to Gqeberha.

Motorists travelling eastwards between Gqeberha and Qonce or East London may consider using the following alternative route:

  • From Gqeberha, follow the N2 to Nanaga, turn right onto the R72 at the Nanaga junction, and travel via Alexandria and Port Alfred to East London.
  • From East London, turn left onto the N2 and travel westwards to Qonce.

The incident happened on Friday, 5 January.

FISHERMAN BITTEN BY A SHARK

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said at 12:28 on Friday, 5 January, NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following a request for urgent assistance from a 62-year-old man, with a friend, reporting that he had been bitten by a Ragged Tooth shark that he had caught while fishing – at Papiesfontein, North East of Jeffreys Bay.

Lambinon said the man, from Plettenberg Bay, and his friend had been shoreline angling in preparation for an angling competition when he landed a shark, then, while attempting to free the shark to be released from the fishing gear, he had been bitten by the shark.

“Our NSRI Jeffreys Bay rescue vehicle, EC Government Health EMS, Gardmed ambulance services, and Relay ambulance services were activated.

“On arrival at the scene, the man’s friend had already applied tourniquets to injuries, lacerations, and puncture wounds to the man’s hand and his calf,” he explained.

Increased traffic expected for South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/south-africa/increased-traffiic-expected-for-south-africa-03-january-2024/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 18:41:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1936959 Increased traffic could be expected for South Africa, as thousands of South Africans prepare to head back to their homes after the holidays.

Roads and highways might be a lot busier for the first week of January, and the SA Department of Transport have urged South Africans to remain safe when on the roads.

Make sure that you’re aware of what the highways or roads will look like before making your travel plans.

We’d like all South Africans to stay safe during this time, and to remain vigilant on the roads.

Here’s more about local traffic expectations, and which areas might be the most affected.

Increased traffic expected for South Africa

According to the SA Department of Transport, the period after the holidays can be some of the busiest times for increased traffic on local roads.

December and January are busy months for the road, where traffic is expected to be at a height.

If you’re going anywhere, you’re advised to remain vigilant of road conditions (and aware of other drivers on the road).

Watching the traffic report

Stay aware on the road at all times, and never drive when you are inebriated or tired. Stop over when possible, and take regular breaks when driving. These basic road tips from the Automobile Association (AA) can help you to stay safer, even in high traffic.

The traffic report from websites like i-traffic and TomTom.com helps you to estimate the load on the country’s highways and roads – and it’s advised that everyone checks before making their next travel plans.

If you’re headed home for the holidays, make sure you remain safe.

South African roads and the weather

The SA Weather Service have also cautioned against weather warnings for some of the country’s provinces, including Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal, and the Eastern and Western Cape.

Johannesburg to Gqeberha: New SAA route to begin next month https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/saa-new-season-route-johannesburg-gqeberha-when-29-november-2023/ Wed, 29 Nov 2023 12:52:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1899247 A new seasonal route for SAA

After almost a full year later, South African Airways (SAA) has revealed that they are ready to go ahead with their promised Johannesburg-Gqerberha route.

Last year in December, the airline had announced direct flights between the two cities ahead of the festive season, but due to a lengthy regulatory approval process, SAA had to unfortunately put the route on hold.

Now, according to Travel News, bookings for the new seasonal route are now open and will kick off from 13 December 2023 until 31 March 2024.

The airline has revealed that there will be two flights a day, seven days a week, although the schedule is still not known.

A member of the Nelson Mandela Bay Airlift Committee told Travel News that the seasonal operations to Gqeberha feels like a breath of fresh air for the city.

“We’ve been wrestling with sky-high airfares and scarce availability, thanks to capacity issues. Now, with SAA stepping in with added capacity, there’s a palpable sense of optimism that it will assist in reducing our high load factors. Here’s hoping this boost becomes a permanent fixture, making travel more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.” the spokesperson said.

SAA also recently set off into international skies again, with their inuagural flight from Cape Town to São Paulo, Brazil.

The new route took off yesterday, 31 October 2023 from Cape Town International Airport with much pomp and ceremony as it marked a major milestone for the airline.

The route will set out from both Cape Town and Johannesburg four times a week. The second intercontinental flight, between Johannesburg and São Paulo will commence on Monday, 6 November 2023.

According to the schedule, flights from Cape Town will go out on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while Johannesburg flights are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays.

The Wild Coast: Three special spots you MUST visit https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/wild-coast-things-to-see-and-do-eastern-cape/ Sun, 12 Nov 2023 13:44:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1874357 The Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast is a renowned stretch of land that is as aptly named as it is stunning. While there are loads of places to see along the coast, here are a few that aren’t to be missed!

Hole in the Wall, of course!

An icon of the Wild Coast – Hole in the Wall. Photo: Vincent van Oosten/ pixabay

Why you should visit: No trip to the Wild Coast is complete without a visit to the famed Hole in the Wall in Coffee Bay. The iconic structure, which literally is a hole in a wall, is a natural arch formed on a tidal island. With waves crashing in and around the hole, it is a mighty sight to behold and is a must experience during a trip to the Wild Coast.

How to get there: The hole is about 7.5 hours from Durban and 4.5 hours from East London. Find your way to the wall either by foot (guided hikes) or 4×4 vehicles.

Magwa Falls on the Wild Coast

Be sure to visit beautiful Magwa Falls. Photo: canva

Why you should visit: If you’re one who’s mad about waterfalls, then the Wild Coast region is the ultimate destination for you. The area is teeming with countless falls like Fraser, Banyane and Bulolo waterfalls, to name a few. Arguably the most majestic out of the lot though, might just be the towering Magwa Falls. Said to be the smaller version of Zambia’s Victoria Falls, Magwa drops down 144m into a narrow canyon and is easily accessible for the adventurous traveller.

How to get there: Located on a tea plantation, Magwa is just 8km outside of Lusikisiki.

Hluleka Nature Reserve

Why you should visit: The Wild Coast is also home to some of the most beautiful and diverse nature reserves in the country. One such is the Hluleka nature reserve in Port St. Johns. Considered one of the Wild Coast’s best kept secrets, the reserve plays host to a wide variety of ecosystems and wildlife including; Eland, Bushbuck and Zebras. Go hiking, explore the beaches, or simply just take in the beauty of your surroundings from one of the chalets on the reserve.

How to get there: Find the nature reserve 30km south of Port St. Johns.
