In South Africa, the malaria season runs from September to May. There are some precautionary measures you can take to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Here are some tips for staying safe while travelling in Africa during malaria season.

Where are the high-risk areas in South Africa?

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that infects a certain type of mosquito. If bitten by an infected mosquito, you may contract malaria.

Malaria is endemic in some areas of South Africa, namely north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal, parts of Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, according to the South African Government. Malaria season in South Africa is from September to May.

Where are the high-risk malaria areas in the rest of Africa?

In addition to South Africa’s high-risk areas mentioned above, certain African countries are high-risk areas for malaria. These are Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Mozambique as per the World Health Organization.

What are the common symptoms of malaria?

Malaria symptoms may only develop 10 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, sweating, fatigue, myalgia, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, appetite loss, and nausea and vomiting, could be an indication of malaria.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you have flu-like symptoms for up to six months after visiting a malaria area as malaria can have a delayed onset.

What are the precautions to take? TOP tips

1. If you plan on visiting a malaria area, see your GP at least two weeks ahead of your trip to discuss malaria medications. These medications must often be taken at least a week before your departure to the malaria area, according to Getaway magazine.

Chemoprophylaxis helps to reduce the chances of getting ill with malaria, according to the South African Government. It is important to note, however, that even if you have taken chemoprophylaxis, you can still contract malaria.

2. Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin. If you are visiting a malaria area, apply mosquito repellent regularly and especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Also, close windows and doors and remain indoors between dusk and dawn.

Ceiling fans and air conditioners are also effective in preventing mosquito bites.

3. Wear protective clothing. Wear long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing, long trousers, and socks while travelling in a malaria area. This will leave less skin exposed for mosquitoes to bite you.

South Africans to pay mandatory insurance when visiting Zanzibar https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/zanzibar-new-compulsory-insurance-how-much-why/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 19:16:36 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156089 Zanzibar introduces new fee

Authorities in Tanzania have announced that a new mandatory insurance fee will become applicable to all tourists visiting Zanzibar from 1 September.

According to Travel News, Zanzibar-bound travellers will have to fork out an additional US$44 (+/-R800) per person on arrival for compulsory insurance.

This fee will reportedly cover tourists for stays of up to 92 days on the island.

What will the fee cover?

The new fee will be handled by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, a government-owned company, and travellers must pay the fee regardless of whether or not they have obtained travel insurance elsewhere.

Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Saada Mkuya Salum, said as per Travel News that the insurance would cover various aspects that have previously been problematic for visitors to the island. These include health, loss of baggage, accidents, emergency evacuation, loss of passports and even repatriation of remains in case of death.

Zanzibari government said that procedures were still being finalised, but the insurance would be obtained online and paid in advance.

With direct flights from South Africa and no visa requirement for short stays, Zanzibar is a convenient and top getaway for South Africans. The island destination’s offerings include stunning beaches like Nungwi and Kendwa, rich history in Stone Town, and vibrant Swahili culture.

‘Durban’s loss is Maputo’s gain’ – clarifies hotelier https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/durbans-loss-maputos-gain-clarifies-hotelier-2024/ Mon, 05 Aug 2024 12:58:41 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2155021 Durban’s loss is Maputo’s gain, according to Southern Sun. The startling reality of Durban’s ongoing tourist and port woes are creating fresh opportunities upstream in Maputo, Mozambique, reports BusinessLive. This came to light in the hotel operator’s latest annual report, published last week (31 August 2024).

In it, Southern Sun clarified how its Durban locations were suffering from low occupancy and having difficulty trading. And how the city’s worsening reputation and on-going port delays were causing a diversion of business to Maputo, Mozambique.

MAPUTO IS ON THE UP

China just built the longest suspension bridge in Africa

Over the last year, Southern Sun and StayEasy Maputo achieved a remarkable 37% growth. The report says this is the result of shipping business being redirected from Durban’s port, according to CEO Marcel von Aulock. Meanwhile, over the same period, KwaZulu-Natal’s contribution to the business had reduced to just 16% for the group. “Durban struggled to attract tourism because of negative PR around polluted sea waters and the after-effect of the 2021 riots and floods on public perception of the city,” explained the group.

Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 used to handle 72% of Durban port traffic and 46% of South Africa’s total import and export traffic. However, Transnet’s poor performance of late has led to massive backlogs at SA’s largest port. As a result, Maputo has been able to expand quickly to meet demands.

DURBAN DECAY AND DYSFUNCTION

Southern Sun Chair, John Copelyn, was scathing about Durban’s dysfunction in the group’s annual report. “The Durban municipality recently put out tenders for two of the most iconic hotels on the Durban beachfront, the Maharani and the Elangeni. However, the fact that not a single hotel group saw fit to consider putting in a bid has forced us to recognise that we are largely alone in our efforts to retain the area as a vibrant holiday destination.”

Moreover, large mining and logistics companies are increasingly turning to Maputo, rather than face costly delays at Durban. Earlier in the year, the Mozambican government extended concession with Grindrod, DP World and other operators to help run the port. These will last until 2058 and include a $2-billion expansion.

LOW OCCUPANCY

Maputo
Stories about poor ocean water quality in Durban dominated the media in 2023. Image: File

Nevertheless, despite the challenges, Southern Sun maintains its optimism that new provincial government will help rebuild Durban. The group’s occupancy in the city currently sits at 58.6%, which it says reflects the low economic growth in South Africa. The hotelier hopes for additional activation of incoming flights into KwaZulu-Natal. And streamlining of the visa application procedure for certain growing areas such as China and India.

Durban in France

Durban in the south-west of France is 607 kilometres from Paris. Compared to South Africa’s Durban, it is very different. It is a quaint village with a population of just over 1 000 residents. The village is especially famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the iconic Château de Durban, which dates back to the 11th century.

Two UK namesakes

Two namesakes in the UK are Worcester and Newcastle.

Worcester in the UK is a University City with a fascinating history and also interesting architecture, located in the heart of the West Midlands on the banks of the River Severn.

Newcastle in the UK on the banks of the River Tyne is particularly famous for its industrial heritage and distinct regional ‘Geordie’ dialect.

South African namesakes in the US

Interestingly, there are quite a few namesakes of main South African cities in the US, with two of these in California: Johannesburg and Cape Town.

California’s Cape Town is spelled Capetown and is the westernmost settlement in the state of California. Johannesburg in the US is a small community in Kern County in the high desert region of Southern California. Similar to South Africa’s Johannesburg, it is known for its historical significance as a mining town during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, unlike South Africa’s Johannesburg, the one in the US is a bit of a ghost town with a population of under 200.

Your passport may be INVALID: Things you MUST know https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/your-passport-may-be-invalid-things-you-must-know/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 12:14:11 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2146959 When travelling overseas, your passport is one of the most important documents. The golden rule is to make sure you know all the requirements and limitations of your destination country. Here are three important things you need to know about passports.

Validity: The six-month rule

Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date to prevent travellers from being stranded in a foreign country if their passport expires while they are abroad. Therefore, it is best to check the specific entry requirements of your destination well in advance of your travel dates to avoid any last-minute issues.

The six-month rule states that your passport must be valid for another six months before you depart for international travel. Depending on which country you are travelling to, the six-month period may begin from the date you leave that country or the date you arrive.

Usually, an ordinary passport is valid for 5 to 10 years, and because of this, most people neglect to check the expiration date. However, if your passport has less than 3 or 6 months before expiration, most countries will not allow you to travel, according to VisaGuide.World.

Countries that enforce the six-month validity rule include but are not limited to Angola, Mozambique, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Keep some pages open

When travelling internationally, the number of blank pages in your passport is crucial.

Some countries require a certain number of blank pages for entry. This is to ensure that there is enough space for entry and exit stamps, as well as visas. Travellers visiting South Africa are required to have at least two blank pages in their passport – one for the visa and one for an entry stamp.

Without the necessary blank pages, you may be denied entry or boarding.

The South African Department of Home Affairs stipulates that blank pages do not include the endorsement page at the back of the passport.

How a damaged passport can cause issues

A damaged passport can be a significant issue when travelling. Immigration officials often reject passports with damage, as reported by Business Insider, as it may compromise the security features embedded in the document, making it easier to tamper with or forge.

Steve Diehl, chief corporate development officer of CIBTvisas, stipulated the following as potential issues:

  • Torn pages
  • Stains, e.g. water stains
  • Frayed bindings
  • Covers that are loose, warped, bent, missing, or torn
  • Peeling plastic
  • Unauthorised markings or unofficial stickers

Tips to avoid getting sick while travelling https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/tips-to-avoid-getting-sick-while-travelling/ Sat, 29 Jun 2024 06:16:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2129697 Feeling sick while on holiday can put a real damper on things. Travelling abroad often means eating dishes you are not used to and may cause serious discomfort. This is just one example. Here are some tips to avoid getting sick while travelling.

Motion sickness

Motion sickness is also known as travel sickness, car sickness, or sea sickness. Modes of transportation such as boats, cars, and trains usually trigger it. While there are certain medications that can treat or prevent motion sickness, there are also other tips that can help manage it.

Staying hydrated is important in preventing motion sickness.

Sitting by the window can help decrease the chances of getting motion sickness. Also, opt for a seat close to the front, if possible. Focussing on the horizon or a point in the distance can also help prevent motion sickness.

Fresh air helps a lot, so if possible, open a window.

There are also some things to avoid in order to prevent motion sickness, such as reading a book or looking at a tablet or smartphone screen. Additionally, try not to move around too much.

How to avoid travelling ailments from food

Travelling abroad often involves trying different dishes and comes with the risk of encountering a meal that doesn’t agree with you. Whether it’s from undercooked food or unsanitary food preparation, there are several ways you can contract food poisoning during your trip.

One of the best ways to avoid food poisoning while travelling is to take a variety of supplements with you. These include electrolytes and water purification products, as well as activated charcoal in case anything does go wrong.

One of the most common reasons people get sick while travelling is drinking water, including ice, in foreign countries. Some areas may lack the sanitation standards that you are used to in your home country. In such cases, it is best to stay safe by drinking water from sealed bottles or using a water bottle with a built-in filter. The same goes for brushing your teeth and washing fruit and vegetables.

Jet lag

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explain that jet lag occurs because of a mismatch between a person’s normal daily rhythms and a new time zone. Jet lag can affect your mood, your ability to concentrate, and your physical and mental performance.

Tips to avoid getting sick from jet lag while travelling:

  • Eat small meals to avoid stomach aches or other problems.
  • Avoid alcohol as it disrupts sleep.
  • Caffeine may help you stay alert throughout the day, but you should avoid it in the evening.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Most Powerful Passports: Which country takes the top spot? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/powerful-passports-ranking-henley-and-partners-latest-most-powerful-country-passport/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 11:20:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2128787 The most recent 2024 passport index has just been released by Henley & Partners and according to the list, Singapore has the most powerful passport in the world with its citizens able to visit 195 visa-free travel destinations out of 227 around the world.

France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain all tied second for most powerful, with its citizens able to visit 194 visa-free travel destinations out of 227 around the world.

Each year, Henley & Partners releases their Passport Index, which essentially ranks the travel documents from all the different countries in the world and determines their power.

By ‘power’, the index refers to the ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

According to the factsheet:

“the index’s scoring system was developed to give users a practical, and reliable overview of their passport’s power. Each passport is scored on the total number of destinations that the holder can access visa-free. For each travel destination, if no visa is required, then a score of 1 is allocated for that passport. This also applies if passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) upon entry.”

South Africa’s passport comes in at number 52.

According to this position, South African passport holders can travel to 108 countries visa-free.

Here is how much to tip in different countries https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/travelling-soon-here-is-how-much-to-tip-in-different-countries/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 06:01:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2128430 Navigating tipping etiquette when travelling to different countries can be tricky. Here is a guide on how much to tip in various countries around the world. In many countries, the norm is similar to South Africa.

General advice

According to Woman and Home Magazine, recent Google searches for ‘tipping abroad’ have risen by 166%. This indicates how many people are unsure of the correct etiquette when travelling to foreign countries.

It is advisable to ask for some small change when exchanging your money for your travels to ensure you can give people like taxi drivers or hotel staff some cash to show your appreciation.

If unsure, it is always helpful to ask a local. Asking the person at the information desk at the hotel or a local person dining at a restaurant, for example, can give you insight into what the expectations are.

Tipping customs in Europe

The rules vary across Europe.

Restaurant bills often include a service charge in countries like France, Italy, Spain, and Germany. In that case, an additional gratuity fee is not necessary. Otherwise, a 10 to 15% tip is the norm.

Tipping is less common in some European countries like Belgium, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

North America and Canada

Tips make up a significant part of a server’s income in North America and Canada. In restaurants, the general expectation is 15 to 20% of the bill, while in bars, it is customary to give $1 per drink.

If you are staying in a hotel, bellhops usually expect $2 to $5 per bag, $2 to $5 per night for housekeeping, and $5 to $20 for the concierge, depending on the service.

Central and South America

In comparison to North America, waiters in South America don’t rely on tips as heavily. The norm is 10 to 15% of the bill, like in South Africa.

It is important to note, however, that some countries like Brazil, Chile, and Costa Rica often add a cover charge to a restaurant bill. This is generally a charge for the table and does not go to the waiter.

How much to tip in Asia

Like in Europe, tipping culture varies greatly across Asia, and expectations in Southeast Asia and the Far East differ significantly.

Generally, in most Asian countries tipping is not expected. In most countries, a tip is appreciated; however, there are a few countries where tips are seen as unnecessary and can even be considered rude.

In Japan, restaurants consider waiting as part of the service, and tipping can be offensive. A small gift is a better option if you really want to show appreciation. Similar to Japan, tipping is not the norm in South Korea.

In countries like Thailand and Vietnam, tipping is becoming more common in tourist areas. The norm is around 10%.

It can be best to err on the side of caution and not tip in Asia, to avoid accidentally offending someone – but you can ask a local, or staff at your hotel for advice.

Australia and New Zealand

Gratuity fees are not generally expected in Australia or New Zealand. Some high-end restaurants in tourist areas include a tip in the bill as a service charge. A 5 to 10% tip or rounding up the bill to the nearest AUD will suffice if you want to show your appreciation for good service. The same applies to taxis, hotels, and bars.

Schengen visa price hike: Changes set to happen this June https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/schengen-visa-application-fees-increase-how-much-when-schengen-europe-travel/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 07:48:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2122210 Earlier this year, the Commission of the European Union (EU) had announced that they would in fact be revising the cost of Schengen visa application fees.

According to Schengenvisa.info, the Commission had suggested that the fee for the visa application increase from €80 (R1 629,60) to €90 (R1 833,30) for adults and from €40 (R814,80) to €45 (R916,65) for children.

In latest news, the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has already announced that third country nationals in need of a Schengen visa be aware that as of 11 June, they would need to fork out more money in order to apply for one.

According to SchengenNews, the Slovenian Ministry stated that visa fees for adults filing a short-term visa application for Slovenia would now be €90, instead of the €80 as it has been so far, and €45, instead of €40, for children between six and 12 years old.

“The European Commission adopted a decision to increase short stay Schengen visa (visa type C) fees worldwide by 12 per cent. The increase will apply worldwide as of June 11, 2024. New Schengen visa fees will be €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to below 12 years of age.” the Slovenian Ministry said in their statement.

Although the European Union’s Commission has not actually made any announcements regarding when the increase would take effect throughout the Schengen region, it is expected to publish the change soon.

WHAT ARE SCHENGEN VISA APPLICATION FEES AND WHO IS LIABLE TO PAY THEM?

According to Schengenvisa.info, all visitors wishing to visit a Schengen area in Europe will need to pay a non-refundable administration fee when applying for their visa, in order for their visa application to be processed.

South African citizens have to pay the fee in South African rands when submitting the visa application at the embassy/consulate of the Schengen country for which they’re applying to visit within South Africa.

South Africans have 90-day visa-free stays in Thailand: See here https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/south-africans-have-90-day-visa-free-stays-in-thailand-see-here/ Fri, 14 Jun 2024 07:39:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2118397 South African passport holders can now visit Thailand for up to 90 days visa-free!

INCREASING TOURISM

TTW says Thailand’s new visa-free entry for 93 countries aims to boost tourism and economic growth by attracting more visitors to the country.

The arrangement is applicable to nationals of many countries. It comes as a part of a broader effort to revive Thailand’s tourism sector, which has seen a downturn following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many countries across the world, including Thailand, are adopting strategies to rejuvenate their tourism industries, primarily by easing visa requirements.

VISITING THAILAND

The country is one of the most affordable international travel destinations for South African passport holders.

Thailand offers a range of exciting activities and experiences to international visitors.

Added to this, it is a visa-free destination for South African passport holders.

In 2023, Thailand welcomed around 24.5 million international visitors, which is a significant rise from the 11 million visitors recorded in previous years.

In so doing, Thailand’s government aims to increase its tourist numbers to between 25 and 30 million per year.

30 DAYS VISA-FREE

For many years, South African passport holders were issued with 30-day entry permits on arrival in Thailand. Thus, no visa was required in advance.

All of South Africa’s neighbours and indeed most other countries in Africa do not have visa-free entry arrangements with Thailand.

The Land of a Thousand Smiles, Thailand, is a perennial favourite for South Africans. But, for many travellers 30 days is just not enough time to explore this exotic destination.

NOW 90 DAYS VISA-FREE

From this month, international visitors from 93 countries, including South Africa, are permitted to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without visas.

The free 60-day entry permit is issued to South African passport holders at airports when arriving in Thailand.

After the initial 60 days, visitors wishing to stay longer can obtain an extension of stay, which is valid for a further 30 days, taking visits up to 90 days.

The Thaiger states that this arrangement is effective from 1 June.

DIRECT FLIGHTS

Currently, there are no direct flights between the two countries.

The Bangkok Post reported that South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand made a call for the reintroduction of direct flights between South Africa and Thailand.

South African Airways previously operated direct flights to the Thai capital, Bangkok. However, it dropped the route in the late 1990s.

Thailand’s national carrier, Thai Airways International, introduced scheduled flights to Johannesburg in the early 2000s. It operated 4 services a week on the route.

However, in late 2014, the airline terminated its only African route. Thai Airways International cited profitability as the reason.

That said, Kenya Airways offers convenient connecting flights between Johannesburg and Bangkok.

Visiting UAE soon? Here are some stricter entry requirements https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/international-travel/uae-entry-requirements-changes-whats-changed-travelling-dubai/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 14:06:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2118185 Visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will now need to heed specific entry requirements before visiting the country on a tourist visa.

This is the first time that UAE authorities have implemented such strict measures for international travellers.

Among these requirements, tourists will now have to provide proof of sufficient funds for expenses in cash or on a credit/debit card.

These new stricter policies were carried out to deter jobseekers from entering the country on a tourist visa with no intention of leavingVisaguide.news reports.

What are the new requirements to enter the UAE?

According to Travel News, tourists will need to be aware of the following before booking their ticket to the UAE:

  • Visitors will have to provide hotel booking documents and a return air ticket.
  • Visitors to relatives or friends will need to provide copies of their visa and passport, as well as their address, phone number, and accommodation details.
  • Visitors must show evidence of sufficient funds for expenses.

These funds are specific and tourists entering with a one-month UAE visa must have at least Dh3 000 or R15 340 in cash or on a credit/debit card.

Tourists entering with a three-month visa will have to show an amount of Dh5 000 or R25 567 for expenses.

It was also revealed that passengers may be asked about their documentation and purpose of visiting and if adequate reasons are not given, they may be denied entry into the UAE.

South Africans lose millions in rejected Schengen visa applications https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/south-africans-lose-millions-in-rejected-schengen-visa-applications/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 11:02:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2118003 Last year the European Union (EU) generated €56.3 million (R 1.1 billion) from rejected visa applications from African nationals. South Africans are included in this.

Since South African nationals require visas to enter the Schengen Area, South African passport holders must apply for Schengen visas prior to travel.

REJECTED VISA APPLICATIONS

Collectively, Africans paid €56.3 (R 1.1 billion) in non-refundable application fees for Schengen visa applications that were rejected in 2023.

Historically, Africans have been among the top Schengen visa applicants.

Besides lodging the most Schengen visa applications, Africans also happen to be the most rejected applicants.

HIGH REJECTION RATE

According to data from Schengen Visa Statistics, in 2023, African nationals received 704 000 visa rejections.

Africa accounted for 43.1% of the total amount generated by rejected applications in 2023.

According to Travel News, this is an increase from the previous year’s amount of €49.9 million (R1 billion) received from 624 344 rejected visa applications from African countries in 2022, as recorded by the European Commission.

A study by the LAGO Collective, a UK-based community of researchers and policymakers, found that the 2023 total rejected visas generated €130 million (R2,3 billion), from the 2022 figure of €105 million (R2,1 billion).

REJECTED APPLICATIONS FROM AFRICAN NATIONS

This means that €56.3 million (R 1.1 billion) was simply wasted since Schengen visa application fees are not refundable.

The Africa.co.za reports that South African nationals contributed €776 880 (R15.7 million) to the amount collected from rejected Schengen visa applications.

Algeria was the most rejected African country, accounting for €13.2 million (R264 million) of the total.

REVERSE REMITTANCES

The number of rejected Schengen visa applications each year results in Africans losing hard-earned cash.

Furthermore, fees from rejected Schengen visa applications result in gains for the EU countries.

Schengen News reports that the funds from rejected visa applications, known as reverse remittances, benefit the EU countries.

SCHENGEN VISAS

A Schengen visa is a travel permit issued by Schengen Area states, permitting nationals from third-country states to enter the Schengen Area for short-term purposes, such as tourism or business trips.

The Schengen visa holder can visit all 29 Schengen countries and stay for periods of up to 90 days.

Although a costly visa to obtain, the Schengen visa is an attractive permit to travellers since it allows entry to many states.

INCREASED SCHENGEN VISA FEES

Schengen visa fees have also just increased. This makes these visas even more costly for African nationals.

Africa.com says the cost of short-term visas has just risen by 12.5 percent.

On 11 June, the EU raised the cost of these visas to € 90 (R 1800).

Furthermore, this excludes the fees levied by agents hired by consulates to handle these applications.

Two nabbed after bomb threat at Cape Town airport https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/two-nabbed-after-bomb-threat-at-cape-town-airport/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 07:12:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2113253 Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that operations at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) are operating as normal following last night’s security threat.

The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Bomb Squad was deployed to CTIA shortly after the crew of departing FlySafair flight FA102 to OR Tambo International was alerted to a possible security threat aboard the aircraft.

The threat was successfully managed by the SAPS and relevant law enforcement agencies. According to ACSA, airport and airline management was at the scene to ensure full compliance with all aviation safety and security protocols required by law.

TWO ARRESTED: HOW THE BOMB THREAR BECOME KNOWN

“ACSA would like to assure the public that the reported security threat was an isolated incident triggered by comments made by two passengers aboard the aircraft,” ACSA said in an official statement. “It must be made clear that the incident was isolated to a specific aircraft and SAPS have since declared the aircraft safe. The passengers were rebooked onto another flight and later arrived safely at their destination.

“We can confirm that two suspects were apprehended, and that there are no further risks to airport operations. Airport management on site would like to assure passengers and stakeholders that operations at CTIA have not been impacted by the incident and that the airport is operating as normal this morning.

“We would like to praise SAPS and AVSEC (Aviation Security) again for their combined efforts in upholding the safety and security of passengers and cabin crew. The safety and security of passengers and crew are of utmost importance,” said Mark Maclean, ACSA Regional General Manager, Cluster 2.

“Last night’s successfully mitigated threat again highlights the importance of why good incident management, collaboration, and security assurance are never taken lightly or compromised by airport and airline management.”

Women travelling solo in Asia

Singapore in Asia is renowned for its stringent laws and regulations, contributing to its position as one of the safest cities for solo female travellers. Driving abroad: These 34 countries accept SA licences https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/driving-abroad-these-34-countries-accept-sa-licences/ Wed, 08 May 2024 06:52:21 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2087380 Are you planning to drive abroad but worried whether your South African driver’s licence will be accepted? There are 34 countries that recognise an SA driver’s licence, including the UK and Australia.

Different terms and conditions such as the period of validity apply in these different countries. Some only allow the use of your SA licence for a few months, while others are more lenient.

Obtaining an international driving permit (IDP)

It is advisable to obtain an international driving permit (IDP) before travelling outside of South Africa if you plan to drive in another country. However, it is not always necessary. One benefit of an IDP is that your driver’s licence is translated into several languages, which can be useful in countries where English is not the official language. It also serves as an alternative form of identification. If you plan to rent a car in another country, you will need an IDP. To apply for an IDP, you can either visit an AA-accredited sales agent in person or visit the Automobile Association (AA) website.

Driving after emigrating

For those who are emigrating and wish to drive in another country on a long-term basis, a driver’s licence confirmation letter, known as a driver’s licence certificate, is required. You will need this to convert your SA licence into a corresponding licence of the destination country. While this certificate is widely accepted, not all countries recognise it. In countries where it is not accepted, you will need to apply for a driver’s licence upon arrival and follow the country’s procedures for obtaining a licence.

Countries that recognise SA driver’s licences

Certain countries have agreements with South Africa regarding SA citizens visiting or relocating, allowing more leniency in terms of using SA driver’s licences. These countries include Botswana, Zimbabwe, Canada, France, and New Zealand, among others.

In Finland, you can drive with your SA driver’s licence for up to two years.

The following countries allow you to drive with an SA driver’s licence for up to a year:

  • Croatia
  • France
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore

You can drive with your SA driver’s licence for up to 6 months in the following countries:

  • Andorra
  • Bulgaria
  • Canada
  • Estonia
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Lesotho
  • Montenegro
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Russia (only if accompanied by an IDP)
  • UK

The following countries allow you to drive with your SA driver’s licence for up to 3 months:

  • Australia
  • Botswana
  • Luxembourg
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Panama
  • San Marino (only if accompanied by an IDP)
  • Seychelles
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

In Angola and Mauritius, you can drive with your SA driver’s licence for up to one month, after which you will need an IDP.

In addition to the regular expiration date, the following countries allow the unrestricted use of an SA driver’s licence – Eswatini, Hungary, Sweden, and the United States. Some US states may require an IDP.

It is important to confirm any stipulations regarding the acceptance of an SA driver’s licence in other countries before you travel as regulations can change.

Norse Atlantic Cape Town flights: What to expect https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/travel-international/norse-atlantic-cape-town-flights-what-to-expect/ Sat, 04 May 2024 09:44:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2085697 Norse Atlantic Airways will launch flights between the United Kingdom and Cape Town later this year.

The airline will offer three flights a week between Cape Town and London, using a Boeing 787 aircraft.

NORSE ATLANTIC AIRWAYS

Norse Atlantic is a low-cost, long-haul carrier that started operations in June 2022.

Headquartered in Norway, Norse Atlantic operates mainly transatlantic flights between Europe and the US.

NORSE ATLANTIC CAPE TOWN FLIGHTS

The airline will introduce its seasonal service to Cape Town on 28 October.

The launch date coincides with the peak tourist season in South Africa.

This translates into high passenger numbers heading to Cape Town from Europe.

Wesgro’s Cape Town Air Access team and London Gatwick’s route development team were instrumental in getting this service going.

LOW-COST LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS

The budget carrier operates a low-cost business model, aiming to promote affordable air travel for everyone.

Norse Atlantic offers various fares, from seat-only options to premium economy class.

Although its flights are low-cost, passengers will be surprised by the space available on Norse’s Boeing 787.

UNBUNDLED FARE OPTIONS

The airline is launching the Cape Town route with some very attractive fares.

Another benefit for South Africans is that Norse’s fares are unbundled.

This enables passengers to buy only the services they need, ranging from seat-only to premium economy, which includes catering, large seats and checked baggage.

Furthermore, Norse Atlantic’s premium economy class rivals those offered by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

FLYING TO LONDON GATWICK

The airline flies to London’s Gatwick Airport, which is another advantage.

Gatwick offers smooth and seamless passenger processing and convenient ground transportation to central London.

CONNECTIVITY WITH EASYJET

Norse does not have partnerships with other airlines, allowing passengers to connect to other parts of Europe.

However, an agreement with easyJet enables travellers to continue to other destinations served by the budget airline.

UK and EU discuss youth mobility scheme https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/move-to/uk-and-eu-discuss-youth-mobility-scheme/ Sat, 04 May 2024 09:39:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2085711 The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) are considering a youth mobility scheme.

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has proposed negotiations with the United Kingdom (UK) to facilitate youth mobility.

This would make it easier for young citizens to study, work and live in each other’s territories.

MOVEMENT BETWEEN EU AND UK

Since Brexit, when the UK left the EU, the movement of people between these regions has declined.

This removed opportunities for young UK and EU citizens to partake in cultural, research, educational, and training exchanges.

UK AND EU YOUTH MOBILITY SCHEME

The proposal aims to grant young people the right to travel between the EU and the UK for longer periods.

Moreover, it will set out the conditions that must be met by young people. This will facilitate movement between the EU and the UK for study, training and work purposes.

UK AND EU YOUTH MOBILITY SCHEME

The aim is to create an agreement that will make it easier for young citizens of the EU and UK to study, work, and live in each other’s territories without strict rules, SchengenVisaInfo reports.

Therefore, by putting forward this proposal to facilitate youth mobility between the EU and UK, authorities aim to remove barriers.

CONDITIONS FOR NEW YOUTH MOBILITY SCHEME

The conditions that must be followed include age, maximum stay duration, conditions of eligibility, and rules for verifying compliance.

Under the proposed agreement, citizens of the EU and UK between the ages of 18 and 30 could stay for up to four years in the destination country.

UK WORKING HOLIDAY VISAS

The UK previously offered two-year working holiday visas to most Commonwealth nationals aged between 18 and 30.

It still offers these visas to states with reciprocal agreements for UK nationals.

Furthermore, the eligible age for UK Working Holiday (subclass 417) visas is now 18 to 35.

South African passport holders were eligible for working holiday visas until 2009.

Ireland considers terminating visa-free entry for SA passports https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/ireland-considers-terminating-visa-free-entry-for-sa-passports/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 08:14:02 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2081382 Ireland is considering revoking its visa-free travel arrangements with South Africa.

South African passport holders have eased entry to over 100 countries. However, this may change if Ireland excludes SA from its visa-abolition agreements.

Ultimately, this is bad news for South African passport holders, who stand to lose a visa-free destination.

IRELAND VISA-FREE TRAVEL

In 2009, the United Kingdom introduced visa requirements for South African passport holders.

It cited raised safety issues resulting from the misuse of South African passports.

The Republic of Ireland, however, did not end its visa-free entry scheme for South Africa.

Nonetheless, the privilege might end soon if Ireland revokes the visa-free entry arrangement.

VISA-FREE ENTRY FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Schengenvisainfo reports that Ireland will discuss ending its visa-free travel scheme with South Africa.

Ireland’s ministers will discuss axing the arrangement so Ireland can tighten up immigration.

Ireland’s Department of Justice says 198 asylum seekers arrived in Ireland on South African passports this year.

ASYLUM SEEKERS ENTER IRELAND

The scrapping of visa-free travel for South Africans comes after alleged abuse of the arrangement by individuals entering Ireland seeking protection.

According to the Irish Times nationals of Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo are using South African passports to enter the country.

IRELAND TO SCRAP VISA-FREE ENTRY SCHEME

Ireland will consider implementing visa requirements for South African nationals to reduce the number of people applying for protection and asylum.

Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee stated that over 80% of international protection applicants entered the country through Northern Ireland.

This number represents over three per cent of the country’s total asylum applicants in 2024.

CHOOSING IRELAND OVER UK

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that the increase in asylum seekers heading to Ireland proves that Britain’s Rwanda plan is already working.

Britain’s prime minister says that the new Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act is already deterring migrants.

Irish deputy prime minister Micheál Martin said the threat of deportation to Rwanda led to people coming to the Republic of Ireland.

There are many European destinations where you can make the most of your budget. Below are four Rand-friendly destinations in Europe that cater to the budget-conscious traveller.

  • 5,98 € (= R122,82) for a mid-range bottle of wine.

Hungary

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has a lot to offer culturally, even if you’re on a budget, including free museums like the geological museum, activities, and attractions. There are also many mid-range hotels that offer value for money. If you venture out to quaint hillside villages, such as Drebecen, you’ll find cheaper accommodation, food, and activities.

Turkey

Turkey is another European Rand-friendly destination. It is one of the most affordable countries to visit in Europe, and although the number of tourists increases each year, prices remain affordable. The good news is that you can visit Turkey all year round as prices stay the same even during peak season.

The well-known Blue Mosque, one of the most majestic Ottoman mosques in all of Turkey, has no entry fee.

There are several affordable accommodation options available such as hostels if hotels are not quite in your budget. There are hostels all over the country, from the big cities to the small villages and most of them offer private rooms as an option. A private room in a hostel will cost around R900–R1300 a night for a clean, basic room in a good location.

Portugal

Dubai airport expected to smash passenger record in 2024 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/dubai-airport-expected-to-smash-passenger-record-in-2024-uae/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 12:06:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2004528 Dubai’s air hub has “every chance” of breaking its record for passenger traffic this year after surpassing pre-pandemic levels in 2023, Dubai Airports’ CEO told AFP on Monday.

Dubai International, the world’s busiest airport for international passengers for nearly a decade, hit 87 million visits in 2023, beating the 2019 figure of 86.4 million despite the Gaza war, new figures showed.

Chief executive Paul Griffiths cited early recovery in Dubai – the United Arab Emirates’ business and financial centre – from the pandemic and a quick rebound in airport staffing levels as key factors.

“We were ready sooner. We were back to 100 percent capacity much sooner, and as a result, our traffic has rebounded far more quickly,” he said, adding that Dubai’s record of 89.1 million passengers, set in 2018, could be surpassed this year.

“I think there’s every chance of going above it. It could be a new record,” Griffiths said. “I’ve had a peek at the January numbers and let’s say it gives me some cause for optimism.”

READ | STRONG resistance: NHI is “unconstitutional”

Dubai Airports’ official forecast for this year stands at 88.8 million passengers, just shy of the record, despite Israel’s war against Hamas which began in October.

“We’ve demonstrated the absolute resilience of the network that we operate,” said Griffiths, adding that Dubai’s airport serves 104 countries via 102 airlines.

“If there is a bit of a dip in demand from one destination or point of origin, then that tends to be compensated by the rest of the network filling the space,” he added.

Cargo traffic was up 20.4 percent in the last quarter, perhaps because of attacks on shipping through the Red Sea by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, Griffiths said.

He would not discuss security arrangements for the airport, beyond saying they were “well developed”.

The Huthis fired drones and missiles at key infrastructure in the UAE in January 2022, killing three oil workers and starting a fire on the grounds of Abu Dhabi airport.

Dubai to London busiest route

Griffiths said the growth in traffic to and from fast-developing Saudi Arabia had been “phenomenal”, with Riyadh now Dubai’s second busiest route behind London.

“If you look at the growth of travel and tourism across the world, we are only scratching the surface in this region,” he said.

“The region is waking up to the fact that travel and tourism is a fantastic driver of growth for the economy, and also it isn’t really competitive, it’s collaborative, and it’s complimentary.

“If you’ve got more cities that people want to visit, the more cities and options there are, the more people will come to the region.”

Plan ahead

Your best bet is to always research your destination beforehand. Look for family-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and attractions that cater to infants.

You should also pack wisely by adding all essential items such as diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, etc. to a packing checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything.

Stick to your baby’s routine

While it might be a little difficult while travelling, try to maintain your baby’s regular feeding and sleeping schedule as much as possible. Be as flexible as possible

Keep your baby entertained

Pack toys, books, and other items to keep your baby entertained during travel. Consider lightweight and portable toys that are easy to carry and won’t take up too much space in your luggage. Be sure to take breaks during long journeys to allow your baby to stretch, move around, and explore their surroundings to keep them happy.

Accept help when offered

Don’t hesitate to accept assistance from family members, friends, or fellow travellers (be cautious here) if they offer to help you with your baby or carry your luggage.

If you’re flying, take advantage of priority boarding for families with young children to give yourself extra time to settle in and get comfortable before takeoff.

When getting around your travel destination, be sure to use reputable transportation options, especially when arriving late at night. You can also pre-arrange airport transfers or use trusted transportation services.

The notorious “Green Mamba” does allow entry to more destinations than most other passports from countries in the region, except for Mauritius and the Seychelles.

ENTRY VISAS

South Africans can travel to more than 100 destinations – from tropical islands to historical urban centres – without having to obtain visas in advance.

Applying for tourist visas can be stressful, time-consuming and expensive. But there are many amazing countries that South Africans can visit without one.

Lufthansa to relaunch Joburg-Munich route after 19-year hiatus https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/lufthansa-to-relaunch-joburg-munich-route-after-19-year-hiatus-breaking-6december-2023/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 19:57:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1908816 Lufthansa Airlines will resume direct daylight flights between Johannesburg and Munich next year.

This comes after a 19-year absence of operating its flights on the route for the German carrier.

RESUMED ROUTE

The exact date for the restart of this route is yet to be announced though it is expected to be during the European summer. These flights will be operated by an Airbus A350 aircraft.

The new generation aircraft will offer exceptional levels of passenger comfort and safety as well as enhanced environmental sustainability.

MUNICH FLIGHTS

Lufthansa last operated flights between the Bavarian city of Munich and Johannesburg nearly 19 years ago. Its last flight between the two cities was in 2005.

The airline currently operates flights between Munich and Cape Town, on a seasonal basis.

However, this service is set to become a year-round one. Lufthansa reports strong passenger demand for flights into Cape Town.

Demand is driven by increasing tourist flows from Europe to the Mother City.

DAYLIGHT SERVICE

There is something to be said for day flights. These services are quite comfortable as they allow passengers to arrive at their destination without having lost a night’s sleep.

Lufthansa will operate three return flights a week between Johannesburg and Munich. The Johannesburg-bound flights will depart from Munich at night, arriving in SA the following morning.

Flights from Johannesburg to Munich will operate as day flights. These services will depart from Johannesburg in the morning and arrive in Munich the same evening.

FIRST CLASS CABIN

In recent years, several airlines have scrapped first class from their flights as there has been reduced demand for this premium service on many routes.

Lufthansa however, has not removed first class from its flights.

The airline will enhance its first and business-class product offerings on flights to South Africa.  Lufthansa reports a strong demand for first class on its SA flights.

COMMITMENT TO SOUTH AFRICA

The Lufthansa Group is committed to South Africa and is looking to enhance the products and services offered on its flights.

The airline demonstrated its commitment to the South African market when it was the first international carrier to land back in the country in October 2020, when lockdown restrictions eased, allowing the return of scheduled flights from abroad.

Moreover, Lufthansa Airlines has been servicing SA for over 6 decades. The carrier has operated flights to South Africa for 61 years. Its first flight to Johannesburg was in 1962.

LUFTHANSA GROUP

The Lufthansa Group of airlines offers 30 flights a week to South Africa across its three brands: Lufthansa, Edelweiss and Swiss International Air Lines.

The company is also a major employer in South Africa, offering jobs to over 1000 people in the country.

Perth: South African Airways to restart route in 2024   https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/perth-south-african-airways-to-restart-route-in-2024-breaking-5december-2023/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 21:34:39 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1907835 South African Airways will resume scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Perth in Western Australia next year.

Currently, travellers wishing to travel between South Africa and Perth must make use of connecting flights which tend to make the trip lengthy and uncomfortable.

PERTH FLIGHTS

The airline says it will resume its Perth flight schedule in March 2024. The restart of the route is made possible due to SAA securing additional aircraft.

Tourism Update reports that SAA’s Carla da Silva, GM Sales, Marketing, e-Commerce and Distribution says that the airline is securing aircraft leases in line with its corporate plan.

REBUILDING NATIONAL CARRIER

SA’s national carrier suspended all flights at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  Subsequently, the airline was grounded for a lengthy period while it underwent a business rescue process.

When SAA resumed scheduled flights in 2021, the carrier operated flights to just a few destinations in neighbouring countries as well as between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The relaunched airline said it would build back better and become less reliant on public funding.

ALSO READ: South African Airways adds another destination in December

INTERCONTINENTAL ROUTES

SAA has slowly scaled up its flight schedule and route network over the last two years, paying attention to financial sustainability.

Last month SAA relaunched its first intercontinental services since restarting operations two years ago.

It started up flights to Sao Paulo (in Brazil) from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The airline has now announced that it will restart services to another international destination – Perth.

ALSO READ: South African Airways suspends flights to TWO destinations

SOUTH AFRICANS IN AUSTRALIA

The news of direct flights between Johannesburg and Perth will certainly be well-received by the large number of South Africans who have connections with Perth.

South African expatriates favour the city as it offers a similar climate and way of life to that of cities like Cape Town.

Perth is often called Perthfontein (a South African colloquialism) by SA communities because the city hosts large numbers of SA migrants.

Perth was a busy and profitable route for SAA. The absence of direct flights has deterred travellers who would ordinarily travel between the two countries.

10 places to add to your ‘sleepcation’ bucket list https://www.thesouthafrican.com/travel/sleepcation-destinations-where-to-stay-restful-holidays-travel/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 14:35:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1902569 A good night’s sleep is now looked upon as a luxury, one that only a privileged few have regular access to. Studies have shown that adults should aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night to achieve optimal health, and yet, very few manage to sleep the healthy recommended hours.

According to a recent ResMed annual global sleep survey, eight in ten adults experienced signs of disruption related to their quality of sleep. Mexico (87%), France (87%), and South Korea (85%) had the highest rates of reported symptoms, while Japan (60%) had the lowest.

This is where sleep vacations or ‘sleepcations’ kick in as a solution. As ridiculous as it may sound – or not – there are hotels and resorts that allow you to spend your time unwinding by sleeping.

Just how do they do this? By creating an environment conducive to sleep and relaxation. Every minor detail plays a major part in it, and together, they enable you to go into a deep slumber. Yes, there are such places that draw the stressed out, sleep deprived people in large numbers.

Here are a few types of hotels and resorts that will send you to dreamland and enable you to sleep your stresses and worries away.

Sleepcation destinations to check out

Ryokans
