Trendy clothes

Chinese giants including Shein, Temu and AliExpress have skyrocketed in popularity around the world in recent years, offering a vast selection of trendy clothes and accessories at stunningly low prices.

The explosive growth has led to increased scrutiny of their business practices and safety standards, including in the European Union and South Korea, where Seoul officials have been conducting weekly inspections of items sold by online platforms.

In the most recent inspection, 144 products from Shein, AliExpress and Temu were tested, and multiple products from all companies failed to meet legal standards.

Shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates – chemicals used to make plastics more flexible – with one pair 229 times above the legal limit.

“Phthalate-based plasticisers affect reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, and can cause infertility and even premature birth,” an official from Seoul’s environmental health team told AFP.

Formaldehyde detected in Shein caps

One such chemical “is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Cancer Institute, so special care should be taken to avoid long-term contact with the human body”, they added.

Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in home building products, was detected in Shein’s caps at double the allowable threshold.

Two bottles of nail polish from Shein were found to have dioxane – a possible human carcinogen that can cause liver poisoning – at levels more than 3.6 times the allowed limit and methanol concentrations 1.4 times above the acceptable level.

Shein told AFP that they “work closely with international third-party testing agencies… to regularly carry out risk-based sampling tests to ensure that products provided by suppliers meet Shein’s product safety standards”.

“Our suppliers are required to comply with the controls and standards we have put in place as well as the product safety laws and regulations in the countries we operate in,” the company added.

Seoul authorities found sandals from Temu contained lead in the insoles at levels more than 11 times the permissible limit.

Temu did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.

Removed from sale

Seoul officials have asked for the products to be removed from sale, according to a government statement.

“Products that exceed the legal limit are products that directly contact the body, such as leather sandals and hats, so citizens should pay special attention,” said Kim Tae-hee, an official in the capital.

“The Seoul Metropolitan Government will continue to conduct safety tests periodically and disclose the results.”

In April, the European Union added Shein to its list of digital firms that are big enough to come under stricter safety rules – including measures to protect customers from unsafe products, especially those that could be harmful to minors.

Shein and Temu have followed Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba in challenging Amazon, especially by making inroads in the US market.

Shein pop-up store opens in South Africa TODAY https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/shein-pop-up-store-opens-in-south-africa-today-friday-2-august-temu-breaking-mall-of-africa-johannesburg-details/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 06:18:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153258 Fast-fashion giant Shein, known for its $5 tops and $10 dresses, will open a pop-up store at the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg on Friday, 2 August as the online retailer aims to expand its brand recognition in Mzansi.

Shein, founded in China, and its rival Temu have aggressively expanded worldwide as online shopping has surged after the Covid-19 pandemic.

As reported by The South African website, they have been accused of exploiting tax loopholes by exporting China-made products in small quantities to avoid higher duties.

“Bringing the Shein experience directly to the end consumer is a key part of Shein’s strategy,” the company said in an emailed response, according to Reuters.

“Given that Shein is a digital-first company, Shein’s hugely successful pop-ups are an opportunity for our consumers to touch and feel our products, as well as to interact and engage directly with Shein’s local brand ambassadors.”

Products not for sale

The pop-up store will be open on Friday, 2 August from 14:00 to 20:00 and from Saturday, 3 August to Sunday, 11 August between 09:00 and 20:00 as an “exhibition space” for customers to try on trendy fashion and lifestyle products.

The pop-up store will be located in the Sook store, shop 2117, on the upper level of the Mall of Africa, South Africa’s biggest shopping mall.

However, the products will not be for sale.

Instead, those willing to purchase will need to do so online at a discount, the company said in its South African Instagram post.

Local influencers were tapped for a pre-opening marketing campaign.

Brick-and-mortar and online fashion retailers have urged South African regulators to impose a 45% import duty on all clothing item imports, no matter the price, to level the playing field. Shein, which is planning to go public in Britaintaps a network of largely China-based suppliers which take small initial orders and scale up based on demand.

A Shein spokesperson told Reuters the retailer is engaging with South African regulators to ensure its continued compliance with local laws.

“That said, such tax measures are not critical to the success of our business or the competitive prices we offer our consumers. We keep our prices affordable through our technology-based on-demand business model and flexible supply chain,” the spokesperson added.

Madiba shirts keep Nelson Mandela’s legacy alive [pictures] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/offbeat/madiba-shirts-keep-nelson-mandela-legacy-alive-president-south-africa/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 06:52:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2139186 In his workshop stocked with piles of fabric and sewing machines, Sonwabile Ndamase is proud that the Madiba shirts he designed for Nelson Mandela 30 years ago endure as a legacy of South Africa’s first democratically elected leader.

Worn untucked and without a jacket, the loose Madiba shirts remain a favourite among South African politicians, making a statement 10 years after Mandela’s death.

Madiba is the clan name by which Mandela is known in South Africa.

A general view of some of the latest designs of Sonwabile Ndamase, who used to design and style for the late former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela and the designer of the original Madiba shirt, in his studio in Johannesburg on 4 July 2024. The self-taught designer came up with the loose-fitting, casual-but-smart silk shirts with bold patterns that have become associated with Mandela, enduring past his death in 2013 at the age of 95. Image: Phill Magakoe/AFP

Ndamase’s clients include South Africa’s current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as his predecessors, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma.

The country’s political and business elite – including ministers, government spokesmen and local politicians – regularly place orders.

Even former US president Bill Clinton and boxing great Mike Tyson have a Madiba shirt.

“Anybody who wants to live a Mandela legacy or who wants to live Mandela ethos in life, guess what they are doing? They will go and pick up Madiba shirts,” Ndamase told AFP.

Nelson Mandela wanted a style that would make him stand out

The jovial 64-year-old designer recalls when he was contacted by Winnie Mandela soon after the apartheid government released her husband from prison in 1990.

Having spent 27 years in jail, the hero of the fight against white-minority rule and South Africa’s soon-to-be president needed new clothes.

Ndamase met Mandela in his home in Soweto.

“He started to tell me that he wanted something that could look conservative enough for him to go and address the captains of industry and… then also to address the masses without having to change,” he said.

Nelson Mandela wanted a style that would make him stand out among other statesmen and did not require a tie.

The self-taught designer came up with the loose-fitting, casual-but-smart silk shirts with bold patterns that are associated with Mandela even after his death in 2013 at the age of 95.

The shirts often feature oriental-style patterns. Some boast deep colours such as burgundy, dark grey and royal blue, with playful designs; others are of cooler, tan hues, depicting elements from nature like leaves or twigs.

All are recognisable as the signature Mandela look. It is a style that Ndamase, who suffered a mild stroke in March 2024, is passing on to a new generation of garment-makers.

A legacy collection

The jocular designer – whose perfect impersonation of Mandela is a testament to their time spent together – is taking his know-how to New York in September when he will host a masterclass for young designers.

On the same trip, he will showcase his Vukani brand’s new collection at an event for celebrity and elite buyers that will pay tribute to the 30 years of democracy since South Africa’s first all-race election in 1994.

The collection takes on a more casual, loungewear aesthetic, a breakaway from his usual style, Ndamase said. The occasion will feature in a documentary by a US-based filmmaker about his career.

Sporting a grey goatee, Ndamase laughs off the many other designers who claim to have pioneered the Madiba shirt or sell versions resembling his own, which today cost around R1 800 apiece.

Once described by the late Winnie Mandela as “part of the furniture”, he says never wanted to use the Mandela name commercial purposes.

“I dressed one generation to another,” he said.

“The relationship I had was a family relationship.”

Born in the Mdantsane township on the southeastern coast, Ndamase still spends time behind the sewing machine in his Johannesburg workshop.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said, squinting at shirt he is working on.

“It’s a legacy collection,” he said, pointing to a T-shirt from the new range that is emblazoned “BE THE LEGACY” and features a famous silhouette of Nelson and Winnie Mandela walking free in 1990.

Miss Supranational SA: Bryoni wows in shimmering gown https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/miss-supranational-south-africa-bryoni-govender-shimmering-gown/ Tue, 02 Jul 2024 11:18:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2131934 Miss Supranational South Africa Bryoni Govender stunned in a glittering green gown as she walked down the ramp during the Elegance Round of the Preliminary Evaluation for the judging of the 68 Miss Supranational 2024 contestants in Nowy Sącz in Poland.

BRYONI GOVENDER STUNS IN GLITTERING GREEN GOWN

Miss SA runner up Bryoni Govender, who is representing South Africa at the Miss Supranational pageant, is currently in Poland as pageant preparations are underway. Bryoni stunned in a glittering green dress as she walked down the ramp during the Elegance Round of the Preliminary Evaluation for the judging of the 68 Miss Supranational 2024.

The beauty queen wore a Juan William Aria art piece that had taken 200 hours to put together. A whopping 55 000 crystals were hand placed and beaded – crystals in shades of emerald, forest, sage, thistle, olive, mint, chartreuse, lime, juniper, shamrock and fern.

Aria previously worked with the Miss South Africa Organisation, producing gorgeous gowns for winning contestants. But this gown was special.

Govender’s adoring public had chosen the colour green, a shade that works well with her honeyed skin tones. Aria had added the pizzazz of movement so that every step she took, her dress swayed and danced, catching the light and coming to life. Earlier in the evening, the beauty queen had walked with flair in the Confidence Round, dressed in a gold bathing costume. The Preliminary Round counts for 40% of the evaluation process.

THE BEAUTY QUEEN ON MISS SUPRANATIONAL SA

This year’s Miss Supranational 2024 is the 15th edition of the pageant, held in Poland. Miss Supranational will be held on Saturday 6 July in Nowy Sącz, Lesser Poland. Andrea Aguilera of Ecuador will crown her successor at the end of the event. South African viewers can watch on the Miss Supranational YouTube channel.

Bryoni previously told The South African that she feels Miss Supranational is embodies the term of an aspirational, inspirational woman.

“What sets the Miss Supranational pageant apart is its core belief that every woman should dream big, reach for the stars and set high goals irrespective of circumstances. The pageant believes in inspiring women to strive for excellence, break barriers, and become the best version of themselves whilst radiating their unique inner strength, grace, and resilience. Hence, embodying the term an aspirational inspirational woman,” she said exclusively to The South African.

“These are values that resonate with me on a personal level, as I am driven by the desire to inspire others and make a difference. Being part of this pageant would not only allow me to showcase my unique qualities but also serve as a platform to represent South Africa to the world,” she continued.

The Foschini Group to bring major UK sports-fashion retailer to South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/business-and-finance/the-foschini-group-to-bring-major-uk-sports-fashion-retailer-jd-sports-to-south-africa/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 13:40:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2039040 The Foschini Group (TFG) has signed a franchise agreement with British sports-fashion retailer JD Sports to be its exclusive retail partner in South Africa.

However, the implementation of the agreement is still subject to Exchange Control approval from the Financial Surveillance Department of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

Should the deal be given the green light, TFG plans to open over 40 JD Sports stores over the next five years in Mzansi.

The first physical store is scheduled to open its doors before the end of 2024.

According to the Bizcommunity website, JD Sports is a sports fashion retailer of branded sports and casual wear, combining globally recognised brands such as Nike, adidas, Puma, New Balance, Under Armour and The North Face, with strong private labels, such as Pink Soda and Supply & Demand.

JD Sports was founded in 1981 by John Wardle and David Makin and has its headquarters in Bury in England.

As of 2021 it boasted over 37 000 employees and 3 400 stores worldwide.

Anthony Thunström, TFG CEO, said, “We are excited to be the exclusive partner of JD Sports in South Africa. This partnership allows TFG to bring a new compelling international sports fashion offering to the South African market. This further bolsters our existing Sports positioning, with our Sportscene, Totalsports, and Sneaker Factory stores already being the destinations of choice for athletic and leisure sports apparel.”

Regis Schultz, CEO of JD Sports Fashion plc, said, “This franchise agreement is a further milestone in our ‘JD Brand First’ plan, and I am delighted to be working with TFG, one of South Africa’s most respected retailers, as we continue to bring JD’s distinctive offering to more customers globally.”

This latest news comes hot on the heels of United Kingdom-based food and coffee chain Pret A Manger which is also planning a foray into South Africa in 2024.

As reported by The South African website, the Millat Group signed a landmark development agreement with Pret A Manger, giving Millat the exclusive licence to operate Pret shops in southern Africa.

Pret is famous for its freshly prepared food and organic coffee and is expected to open its first store in Johannesburg in the coming months.

What the wicked witch?! Balenciaga shoes spark hilarious jokes https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/balenciaga-reptile-sneaker-shoes-hilarious-jokes/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 06:26:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2021937 Fashion is continuously evolving – these days in the most bizarre direction. Designers have gone from making top-of-the-range garments to designing pieces that the average Joe just cannot fathom wearing.

Balenciaga is one of the world-renowned luxury brands that keep shocking people with their bizarrely unique fashion pieces, which are becoming more out of this world by the day.

Their latest contribution to the fashion world — according to X page @highsnobsociety — is a pair of sneakers that look like something from a comedy movie set.

Balenciaga bad: Weird sneakers cause commotion

Balenciaga is definitely doing everything to stay unique. In 2022, their trash bag-inspired handbags shocked many — and this is because the bags literally looked like trash bags.

The luxury clothing brand allegedly unveiled its latest contribution to the fashion world, and it really is something else.

Taking to X, @highsnobsociety posted a pair of the most bizarre sneakers explaining that they are Balenciaga’s latest design.

The shoes are called “Reptile Sneakers” and are truly interesting to look at – but not exactly in a good way.

“BALENCIAGA footwear designer Qianbeini shares a look at the new ‘Reptile’ sneaker from the upcoming Winter 2024 collection,” the post was captioned.

Netizens are shook

Needless to say, social media users didn’t have many nice things to say about the shoes. Many of the accused the luxury brand of testing how far people will go in the name of keeping up with fashion.

“This them shoes the wicked witch of the east was wearing when Dorthy crushed her with a house,” one person said while another wrote:

“If you really think about it why would a high end fashion brand make reptile shoes if there aren’t reptiles living amongst us.”

The infamous trash bag bag

In 2022, Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, confirmed that the team wants to leave people questioning fashion these days.

Speaking to Women’s Wear Daily, she explained that they love a good fashion scandal.

“Who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?” she asked in response to the backlash sparked by the trash bag inspired handbag.

Blush Queen: ‘Glazed blush’ is the hottest beauty trend of the year https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/glazed-blush-beauty-trend-makeup-highlighter-hailey-bieber-16-february-2024/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 12:32:15 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2000953 Over the past few years, glossy or glazed skin, nails, and lips have dominated the beauty scene, but there is a new trend in town. Here is everything you need to know about ‘glazed blush,’ the latest makeup trend to take the beauty industry by storm.

‘GLAZED BLUSH’: THE HOTTEST BEAUTY TREND OF 2024

Lips and nails have taken center stage in the beauty world over the past year, but now it’s time to turn it up a notch and redirect. According to Glamour UK, the latest makeup trend to hit the beauty scene is called “glazed blush,” and it’s all about creating perfect juicy cheeks.

Dewy, flushed cheeks are what this trend is all about, and it’s pretty easy to create. As per the publication, the look can easily be achieved using cream blushes and liquid highlighters.

“Cream blush is perfect for creating a healthy flush, and you can easily blend your blush with your fingers or beauty blender,” advises top celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm tells Glamour.

“Glazed blush is all about creating an ultra-flushed, luminous finish to lift and brighten the face. Think glossy, balmy, and radiant — and anything but minimal. And the best part? It can work with any shade or skin type,” Aimee Connolly, makeup artist and founder of Sculpted by Aimee tells POPSUGAR.

Don’t have liquid blush? Simply mix a powder blush with a bit of liquid highlighter and dab it onto your cheeks with your fingertips.

Placement is, however, everything. Opt to place the blush on the apple of the cheeks or slightly above it for a more lifted look.

BLUSH TRENDSETTERS

Although first made popular by makeup artists to the likes of Patrick Ta and Pac McGrath, the glazed blush look has been popping up on red carpets everywhere.

Saltburn actress Rosamund Pike stole the show with her blush cheeks at the 2024 Golden Globes.

And, of course, the queen of glazed nails, Hailey Bieber, is also following suit.

MOB WIFE STYLE IS TAKING OVER SOCIAL MEDIA

A new fashion trend is taking the world by storm, and you’ll never guess what it is.

According to MailOnline, twentysomethings call it “mob wife” style, and it’s all about flaunting luxury fashion finds. Think fur coats, leather, leopard prints, and lots of gold.

The trend is so popular that the director of “The Godfather,” Francis Ford Coppola, decided to comment on it.

“I hear the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ is making a come back… The inspiration for the style of @diane_keaton’s character Kay was my wonderful wife Eleanor. On the other hand, the style of Talia Shire’s character. Connie Corleone, was a sultry, delightful Italian princess,” he captioned images of the two characters.

Some TIkTokkers are speculating that the trend is popping up just in time for the 25th anniversary of the mob-style show, “The Sopranos,” debut, The New York Times reports. According to the publication, HBO spokesperson Jason Mulderig took no credit for it.

Beauty experts say a songstress, actress and model are all on the top five list. Can you guess who they are?

WHO IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD? YOU’LL NEVER GUESS

You may have heard about the golden ratio. It’s a mathematical principle used to decide who the most attractive people are.

According to the Centre for Surgery, a clinic that specialises in all things plastic surgery, the Golden Ratio (1:1.618) “is a principle from mathematics that describes ideal proportions. When applied to facial aesthetics, it offers a guideline for achieving facial balance and symmetry.”

As beauty brand Anastasia Beverly Hills tells The Sun: “The golden ratio method provides facial symmetry, using your unique bone structure to balance brows and determine their shape.”

So, who is the most beautiful woman in the world?

Using modern digital face-mapping technology created by Dr. Julian De Silva, from the Centre For Advanced Facial Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery in the UK, found that the Killing Eve actress Jodie Cramer has a face that is 94.52% close to the Golden Ratio.

As described in an article on his blog, Dr. De Silva explained that he used the newest digital face-mapping techniques to measure features like her eyes, nose, lips, and chin and that Jodie’s face closely aligns with what the ancient Greeks considered perfect.

As per Dr. De Silva, Jodie’s nose and lips scored 98.7%. This is a near-perfect score. The actress also scored highly for her nose’s dimensions, lip shape, and eye position. Her chin shape and facial structure are also reportedly outstanding.

Actress Zendaya came in second with an overall score of 94.37%, and model Bella Hadid came in third with 94.35%. Beyoncé ranked fourth with a score of 92.44%.

AND THE CELEBRITY WITH THE ‘BEST NOSE’ ACCORDING TO THE GOLDEN RATIO IS…

Have you ever wondered who has the most beautiful nose in the world?

As Dr Rachna Murthy and Jonathan Roos, reconstructive surgeons at Face Restoration London, the person with the ‘best nose’ is the singer Ariana Grande, The Sun reports.

The surgeons used digital facial mapping to assess the width of the nostrils, the root (distance between the brows) of the nose, as well as the width and length of the nose.

Second on the list is Zendaya, with Scarlett Johansson and Meghan Markle in joint third place. The Princess of Wales came in tenth place.

Also known as uru uru or ice nails, the trend originated in the K-beauty industry. It started making the international beauty rounds after being recreated by LA-based Korean American nail artist Mary Koh, the publication reports.

GET THE LOOK

Essentially, the trend consists of a shimmery and glowing design set in a clear gel that changes colour as you move your hands. The idea? To make it look like the northern lights (aurora borealis).

According to Bustle, a holographic foil layer creates a 3D effect; whereafter it is sealed with a thick gel coat.

Choosing clear, sheer, or pink base colours will create an elegant look while purples and blues will create a more modern and futuristic look. Bright colours like oranges and reds will make your nails sparkle and stand out from the rest.

Try these looks:

CLEAR OR SHEER

PINK

PURPLE OR BLUE

THE DARING AND UNUSUAL AT THE 2024 GRAMMY AWARDS

While many nailed their 66th annual Grammy Award looks, these celebs decided to rather change it up. Love or hate them, they know how to get people talking.

Here’s a look at some of the night’s more interesting and daring fashion.

MILEY CYRUS

Too much or little enough? Miley Cyrus stepped out in a see-through gold mesh dress by Maison Margiela and Christian Louboutin heels. “This dress took 675 hours of artisanal hand crafted work, 14,000 golden safety pins and is adorned with singularly selected French antique beads,” she explained her look.

Her choice of hairstyle, however, had some fans scratching their heads.

ELLIE GOULDING

Love it or hate it? We’re not sure. Nominee singer Ellie Goulding dropped jaws on the Grammy’s red carpet in a sheer Zuhair Murad gown with lace and feather details.

DOJA CAT

Yikes! Although Doja Cat is known for taking fashion risks, we’re not sure if that included a nipple slip while on the red carpet. The singer stepped out in a nude see-through gown, showing off each tattoo on her body.

KAT GRAHAM

We are so not sure what the idea behind this design is. For her Grammy look, actress Kat Graham chose an optical illusion design. Although it gives the illusion of being see-through in parts, it also has a cape-style panel that partially covers her neckline. Love it or hate it?

ERYN ALLEN KANE

Rhythm and Blues singer Eryn Allen Kane hit the Grammys in a dress that looked slightly blood-soaked. The short hemline, train, and hairdo also had people gushing.

COI LERAY

US rapper Coi Leray was not afraid to bear it all. Her ensemble resembled a mix between a swimsuit and formal wear, which she paired with a neon green feathered jacket slung over her arm.

DAWN RICHARDS

It seems singer Dawn Richard’s took her fashion inspiration from rapper Cardi B’s 2023 Grammy outfit. Although Richard’s dress was quite simple in design, it featured branch-like extensions with leaf details that rose above her head.

TONGORO ACCUSES BALMAIN OF STEELING JEWELLERY DESIGNS

After seeing the visible similarities between the Balmain face jewels and the “Cairo” face piece, Tongoro founder, Sarah Diouf took to social media to express her disappointment. She also shared how frustrating it is when “Western brands claim African creativity” without any recognition.

“The visible similarity of the piece presented by @olivier_rousteing for his Balmain FW24 Men’s collection to ours, is a challenging and painful event”, Sarah notes.

The fashion designer also questioned when bigger brands will stop being “inspired” and instead actually give credit to smaller scaled African luxury brands.

Saraf Diouf continued: “…questioning yet again the actual regards Western brands claim to have towards African creativity while openly saying being « inspired » by it… How long?”.

PAYING HOMAGE TO AFRICAN COMMUNITIES

Apart from voicing out her disappointment and pain, Sarah also shared the significance of her brand, Tongoro as well as sharing the inspiration behind her iconic face jewellery that has been previously worn by the likes of Naomi Campbell, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé.

“In May 2019, we were introducing our jewellery line, featuring the ‘Cairo’ face jewellery piece. Inspired by the Woodabe tribe men’s makeup, the face piece was first presented in our « Tongoro Tribe » collection runway show in Dakar, paying homage to African nomadic communities”, the Tongoro fashion designer explained.

“Straight off the runway, we’ve adorned model Naomi Campbell and singer Alicia Keys with it”, she added.

Sarah continues: “The piece quickly became a hit and a staple of Tongoro’s line when fiercely styled by Zerina Akers on #Beyoncé for the Lion King’s « Spirit » video, which became one of the many memorable cultural moments we’ve managed to create with the brand”.

Balmain is yet to comment on their allegations.

WOW! NETIZENS REACT TO NEW BALENCIAGA TOWEL SKIRT

The Balenciaga towel skirt is said to be part of the brand’s 2024 Spring Collection, TMZ reported. It retails for a whopping $925 (an estimated R17 376). According to the publication, the high-end clothing brand said the new towel skirt is held up by two buttons inside the waistline and has an adjustable belt with a buckle inside.

The Italy-made skirt is a regular fit and is knee-length in size. It’s also said to be one of those items that need to be well-taken care of with dry-cleaning from time to time as it’s made from terry cotton.

Taking to their feed, Balenciaga said the towel skirt is from their unisex collection and has an embroidered logomark at the front. According to Vogue, the eyebrow-raising skirt comes months after Balenciaga’s creative director Demna shared that he was planning to turn away from gimmicky pieces.

“It’s a serious job, you know, to make clothes. It’s not about creating image or buzz or any of those things,” Demna was quoted as saying

Unsurprisingly, the towel inspired some strong opinions on social media.

R16k Balenciaga towel skirt leaves SA in stitches https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/balenciaga-r16k-towel-skirt-trash-pouch-15-november-2023/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 11:57:19 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1879436 Fashion is continuously evolving – these days in the most bizarre direction. Designers have gone from making top-of-the-range garments to designing pieces that the average Joe just cannot fathom wearing.

Balenciaga is one of the world-renowned luxury brands that keep shocking people with their bizarrely unique fashion pieces, which are becoming more out of this world by the day.

Their latest contribution to the fashion world is the towel skirt – a $950 (R16k) skirt inspired by an actual towel.

Balenciaga R16k towel-skirt stuns SA

Balenciaga is definitely doing everything to stay unique. Last year, their trash bag-inspired handbags shocked many — and this is because the bags literally looked like trash bags.

The luxury clothing brand just unveiled its latest contribution to the fashion world, and it really is something else.

The towel skirt is a skirt which looks no different to a normal bathroom towel and is even designed to look the way it does when one wraps a towel around their waist after a bath or a dip in the pool.

The skirt is already on their website and has been marketed as a unisex item. It is made with beige Terry cotton.

According to the site, the fashion piece is from Look 30 of Balenciaga’s Spring 24 Collection.

Model accuses designer Micheal Costello of ‘whitewashing’ her face https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/breaking-model-accuses-designer-micheal-costello-of-whitewashing-her-face-7-november-2023/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 10:17:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1866822 American fashion designer Micheal Costello has once again landed in controversy after a model accused the designer of digitally altering her face to look White/ Caucasian.

‘REMOVING MY FACE IS COMPLETELY DISRESPECTFUL’

In a viral video shared to TikTok Taiwanese Model Shereen Wu explained how the designer who she in the last minute walked for replaced her face with the face of an AI white woman.

“I recently walked for Michael Costello, but that’s not me he posted on his Story. Michael’s a big designer with 1.7 million followers. Editing my face and removing my race is completely disrespectful”, she said pointing to the altered pictured of herself.

She continues: “He claims he casted me because he likes me, but I wasn’t even on the official list. The only reason why I walked for him last minute was because the model went missing and I could fit in her dress”.

Wu further explains that she asked Micheal Costello about the edited picture to which he blamed the photographer, who confirmed that he did not alter or edit her appearance in the photograph.

Shereen also shared that the photographer told her that Costello had “deleted” and “unsent” DMs between him and the photographer to make it seem as if the photographer was engaging in a “one-sided conversation”.

In a quest to search for answers Wu said a model close to the designer asked him about the situation on her behalf. Micheal told the model that the photo was “fan art” which contradicts his previous claim noting that the photographer edited the photo.

MICHEAL COSTELLO RETALIATES

The Taiwanese American model also notes how instead of apologising about the AI edited picture Costello retaliated by deleting her photo from his account and then posting a series of AI generated images that were used by other fashion brands and designers.

The publicity she missed out on due to the designer not showing her face made Shereen feel disappointed because she felt like she was taken advantage of by the designer.

“I understand as a model, I am replaceable, but I don’t get paid to do these shows. While I don’t get paid, there’s an understanding that I’m doing this for exposure and photographs. By not using My face, He’s taking advantage of models without the same influence as he does”, Wu expressed.

@shereenwu

Michael Costello has yet to take responsibility for his actions. I want to explain what happened, and I hope other models in the future feel comfortable to speak up. He has since offered to post my photo side by side with the AI one, but has not voluntarily post it. This offer did not contain an apology, and only happened after a model who’s close with him brought light to the situation. Some points I couldn’t fit: -Replaced the face of a model from the same collection -Lightened the skin of a black model in a photo and proceeded to push blame on the makeup artist (mua did not lighten the skin) -Screamed at models backstage (he screamed at the girl who stumbled on the runway to near tears, only to make an Instagram post praising her after.) But considering how long he’s been acting like this, I doubt any apology from him would be sincere; they would be performative at best. (Sorry for the weird cuts and sped up video I was trying to fit as much as I can in) #michaelcostello #greenscreenvideo #drama #michaelcostellocontroversy

Sustainable fashion: Looking stylish while saving the planet https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/sustainable-fashion-looking-stylish-while-saving-the-planet-16-september-2023/ Sat, 16 Sep 2023 13:05:02 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1793117 Fashion comes a long way with 90s trends such as bell-bottoms, studded belts, platform shoes to slip dresses making their way back to the modern era.

However, as with any industry there’s always a call for change and adaptation. The fashion industry is undergoing transformation and looking for innovative ways to look glamorous while growing awareness of environmental and ethical concerns that could lead to sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion is an emerging powerful force redefining the way we think about clothing.

WHAT IS THE ISSUE?

Fast fashion, characterised by rapid production, low prices, and disposable garments, has contributed to significant environmental and social issues. Ranging from excessive water usage in textile production to unethical labour practices, the fashion industry has a lot to answer for. Sustainable fashion is the answer to all these challenges.

In recent years, we’ve seen a number of retail stores/fashion productions adopt the idea of sustainable fashion while maintaining the same quality.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?

Sustainable fashion seeks to minimise the negative impact of clothing production and consumption on the planet and people. It’s built on several key principles including the usage of eco-friendly materials, minimal waste, longevity, and ethical labour practices.

Using eco-friendly materials refers to the usage of organic, recycled, or alternative materials to reduce the environmental footprint of clothing production, leading to sustainability in fashion. Eco-friendly materials include organic cotton and recycled polyester, to name a few.

Minimal waste in sustainable fashion refers to zero-waste design and efficient manufacturing processes that aim to reduce textile waste in landfills. Recycling and repurposing materials are other ways to reduce waste (circular fashion).

ALSO READ: Four unusual things to do in Cape Town

Longevity is the quality craftsmanship and timeless designs that encourage consumers to buy fewer, longer-lasting pieces.

Ethical labour practices in sustainable fashion include prioritising fair wages, safe working conditions, and workers’ rights throughout the supply chain.

CONSUMER POWER: WHAT ROLE DO SHOPPERS PLAY?

Consumers play an important role in driving the shift towards sustainable fashion. By making mindful choices, such as buying from ethical brands, embracing second-hand shopping, and caring for clothing to extend its lifespan, individuals can be part of the solution.

THE ‘GREENER’ FUTURE OF FASHION

Sustainable fashion is more than a trend; it’s becoming the norm. Fashion industry leaders, governments, and consumers are recognising the urgent need for change. As sustainable practices continue to evolve and gain traction, we can look forward to a fashion industry that celebrates style without sacrificing the planet’s well-being or exploiting its people.

Nothing feels better than wearing clothes you know prioritised the planet in the process. We need to support sustainable brands and make eco-conscious choices, to be part of a fashion revolution that prioritises people, the planet, and style. Together, we can redefine fashion, one eco-friendly garment at a time.

Tips to overcome 4c hair struggles https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/tips-to-overcome-4c-hair-struggles/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 08:14:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1755458 WHAT IS 4C HAIR?

4C hair is characterized by tight coils and curls. As beautiful as it is, it comes with its own set of challenges. Individuals with 4C hair often face unique struggles, from finding the right products to maintaining moisture. In this article, we’ll explore some common issues faced by those with 4C hair and provide tips on how to overcome them.

MOISTURE RETENTION

One of the biggest struggles for individuals with 4C hair is retaining moisture. Due to its tightly coiled structure, 4C hair tends to be a bit dry, which can lead to breakage and frizz. To combat this, it is essential to focus on hydration. Deep conditioning treatments, moisturizing hair masks, and using leave-in conditioners can help keep your curls moisturized and healthy. Trimming your ends can also be beneficial as it gets rid of the “dead”, much older hair.

DETANGLING DIFFICULTIES

Detangling can be a nightmare for 4C hair, as the tight coils can easily tangle and knot together. It is important to be gentle with your hair when detangling and use techniques that minimize damage. Start by finger-detangling your hair when dry before moving on to a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush. You can also add a deep conditioner for that ‘slip’, making the whole process easier.

SHRINKAGE

4C hair has remarkable shrinkage capabilities, often appearing shorter than it actually is due to its coiled nature. Many individuals desire length retention, but shrinkage can be discouraging. It’s difficult to rock a long, full afro because of shrinkage, however protective styles like braids, twists, or bantu knots can help stretch the hair and reduce shrinkage. Stretching methods such as african threading, mini twists and blow-drying brushes can also elongate your curls without doing much harm.

STYLING CHALLENGES

Styling 4C hair can be a challenge due to its tight texture. Many hairstyles require extra manipulation and products to achieve the desired look. However, there are various styles suitable for 4C hair, such as twists, braids, updos, and afros. Experimenting with different techniques and products tailored for your hair type can yield stunning results and unlock your hair’s true potential.

Wigs are a great option for getting the hairstyle you want without having to worry about styling. They can add volume, length, and texture that you wouldn’t otherwise have with 4C hair. Wigs come in all shapes and sizes and make it easy to switch up your look without damaging your own hair.

Curlyme is an online store that offers a wide variety of wigs so you can find something perfect for you. The quality of human hair wigs in Curlyme holds on 100% real human hair, which leads to the wigs in Curlyme enjoying natural luster hair. The service comes from the demand of girls, ladies of black, design the wear and go wigs to match the black skin tone largely, and the effects are amazing.

FINDING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

Finding the right hair products for 4C hair can often be difficult. What works for another individual with 4c hair doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for you. With so many natural hair products available nowadays, it has proven to be rather difficult to pick and choose the right products that work for your hair. It’s crucial to identify the ingredients and formulations that work best for your hair. Go for products that offer moisturising and nourishing ingredients, preferably without harsh chemicals like sulfates or parabens. Natural oils like jojoba, argan, and shea butter can also provide much-needed hydration.

While 4C hair may come with its fair share of struggles, embracing and caring for your unique hair texture can lead to stunning and healthy results. By focusing on moisture retention, detangling techniques, shrinkage management, styling options, and finding the right products, you can overcome the challenges and celebrate the beauty of your 4C hair. Remember, your hair is unique and deserves the attention, care, and love it requires.

SYRUP NAILS IS TIKTOK’S LATEST HOTTEST NAIL TREND

Inspired by K-beauty, syrup nails are taking TikTok by storm, and it’s easier to recreate than you might think.

According to Glamour, the trend has generated more than 10 million views. Pro celeb nail artist, Jin Soon Choi, told the publication that “syrup nails replicate the appearance of liquid syrup, akin to the glossy, high-shine finish of jelly nails.

The look is created by applying gel or nail polish along with a glossy topcoat and reminds of the very popular doughnut nail trend, made famous by Hailey Baldwin.

“The idea is to mix any colors with the base coat to achieve the appearance of a translucent syrup hue,” Choi says.

Here’s a look at different ways to incorporate the trend.

“He says he’s designing, writing music and being inspired,” the source continued.

THE NEW MISS SA CROWN: MOWANA

When the Miss SA winner is crowned on Sunday 13 August at the SunBet Arena, Times Square in Pretoria, she will be wearing a new Miss SA crown. She will be carrying the weight of our heritage and of one of the most recognisable symbols of our country – a tree that signifies life with the Mowana crown.

The Mowana crown is the brainchild of Ursula Pule – creative director and co-founder of Nungu Diamonds – the sponsor of the new Miss SA Crown. Pule, spent several years harnessing her skills in jewellery design, and created memorable pieces for celebrities such as Somizi Mhlongo, Connie Ferguson and more.

“My inspiration came from a safari we took in Musina in 2019; from the magnificent baobab tree, also known as the Tree of Life. As you drive into Limpopo, you see these exquisite trees – unlike any other trees – that represent our African heritage,” she said in a statement.

“The next morning, on a game drive, I saw the sun rising behind a baobab and was mesmerised. That was my inspiration and I have carried that vision with me all these years. When it was time to design the crown, I thought that there was nothing better to represent our country and our company Nungu Diamonds,” she continued.

MINIMALISTIC DESIGN

Pule also used the African sunrise as a metaphor to symbolise the rise of Miss South Africa at the start of her reign, signifying the
beginning of her new life as our queen. The design is minimalist and simple to allow the precious stones to speak for themselves.

“Mowana is the first crown of its kind in South Africa and is made up of over 800 stones  comprising diamonds, gemstones and cubic zirconia, the biggest weighing 15 carats,” said Kealeboga Pule, CEO and founder of Nungu Diamonds.

To commemorate the occasion, PUMA is taking a journey through time to celebrate the Suede with a string of drops that explores how hip-hop has evolved over five decades, and in doing so left its unmistakable impact on many different subcultures.

First up, the special Collector’s Edition Suede derives from classic varsity jackets favoured by ‘70s hip-hop-heads. Inspired by the OGs, the Collector’s Edition Suede is made for the past, present, and future of hip-hop.

THE PUMA COLLECTION

This edition of the PUMA Suede boasts a high-quality suede upper, punctuated by crisp colours and contrast blocking. White piping outlines the iconic Formstrip, which features tear-away black material, revealing white underneath. Subtle silver studs appear on the shoe’s upper and heel, while special touches appear in the form of waxed laces and a “48” stamp, signifying the year of PUMA’s founding in 1948.

The accompanying Suede Fat Lace is a purist expression of the silhouette’s history, recalling the impression that the Suede left on hip-hop style in the 1980s. This new iteration comes with fat laces and gold-coloured lace charms, designed to be worn by hip-hop royalty.

Informed by hip-hop history, the PUMA Suede Collector’s Edition and Suede Fat Lace are accompanied by a capsule of apparel, including a matching tracksuit, jerseys, and varsity jacket, also bearing PUMA’s “48” insignia.

OTTIE’S DATING DEBACLES

In a shocking twist, Ottie discovered that it wasn’t an allergic reaction to his date, but rather a case of her using lip-plumping gloss, reports Dailymail. This left him amazed and bewildered. Ottie, who co-hosts a popular podcast with his friend Jake Craig, often discusses their dating escapades on the show.

During a recent episode, Ottie shared the peculiar experience he encountered with a woman on a first date. As he leaned in for a kiss, a fiery tingling sensation overcame him, leaving him puzzled and worried about a potential allergy.

“We started hooking up in the car, and then we pull away and start talking again – but my lips start burning. In my head, I thought – what the f***? I was going over the evening in my head – did we order pizzas with jalapeños on it? Am I allergic to my date? What’s happening?”

Ottie

LIMP-PLUMPING KISS

Seeking answers, Ottie finally asked his date about the unusual sensation. To his relief and surprise, she explained that she had applied lip plumping gloss, a cosmetic product designed to create the appearance of fuller lips. The gloss contains mild irritants that cause blood vessels to expand, resulting in a temporary swelling effect on the lips.
