GARAGE for sale for R2.2m in Cape Town’s Bantry Bay https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/cape-town-property-prices-listings-bantry-bay-grage/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:46:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166815 Cape Town is known for its astronomical property prices. But it seems a Bantry Bay garage selling for millions has taken the cake.

The listing has gone viral on social media.

BANTRY BAY GARAGE AND OTHER SHOCKING LISTINGS

In a property listing, a one-car garage in Cape Town’s affluent suburb of Bantry Bay has had social media users doing a double take.

The 18 square metre property – which measures the size of a single parking space – is located in a gated community on Victoria Road.

According to the estate agents, the space – priced at R2.2 million –  is “secure and sought after.” The minuscule space also comes with a R473 monthly levy.

On social media, X users were both shocked and amused at the listing.

@MasonwabeWeber: “Guaranteed someone is going to buy it, slap a bed and bucket in there and call it a “rustic Campsbay” stay on Airbnb.”

@KoketsoResane: “That Ferrari has to park somewhere.”

@DeanKietzmann: “What’s the view of the beach like?”

@L_N_E_N_E: “Cape Town’s real estate market is an April Fool’s joke that refuses to end.”

Other X users have shared a look at more bizarre property listings in Cape Town.

One includes a listing for a SINGLE ROOM rental in a Sea Point apartment for R33 000 per month. The rental would entail sharing a living space with the apartment’s owner.

Another included a listing of a 90-square-metre bachelor apartment in Woodstock, Cape Town, for almost R1 million. According to the description, the owner has “maximised space” by doubling a bookshelf as a pair of stairs leading to a bed located above the living and dining area.

WHY IS PROPERTY SO EXPENSIVE IN CAPE TOWN?

According to various estate agents, Cape Town locations like Sea Point, Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, and Green Point are highly sought after thanks to their proximity close to the beaches, business district, nightlife, and, of course, mountain views.

There is also the tourist factor of the city, which has a cosmopolitan population that has attracted foreign remote workers from around the world. International buyers – including many celebrities – are also responsible for lapping up many luxury properties in Cape Town and surrounding areas.

All these factors have resulted in high demand prices for properties skyrocketing.

According to Daily Investor, Cape Town is the most expensive city to live in on the African continent.

BusinessTech reveals that renting a two-bedroom apartment located in any of the above areas can easily cost R75 000 per month and above. Purchasing property in the area can range from tens to hundreds of millions of rands.

Former Orlando Pirates star goes back to school to study law https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/former-orlando-pirates-star-goes-back-to-school-to-study-law/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:03:36 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166812 No doubt former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thandani ‘Bibo’ Ntshumayelo had a colourful stint with the Soweto giants up until his four-year ban that took a toll on his career.

FORMER ORLANDO PIRATES STAR THANDANI NTSHUMAYELO’S CAREER

He started his youth career with Black Swallows. However, he later switched the floor to SuperSport United in 2005.

In 2009, Thandani Ntshumayelo joined the SuperSport United senior team. After two seasons, the midfielder joined Orlando Pirates in 2012.

He was part of the star-studded squad of Orlando Pirates that had a host of stars, including Oupa Manyisa, Bennie McCarthy, Andile Jali, Happy Jele and the late Senzo Meyiwa.

At the time, he was 23 years old at the time and was reportedly earning R275 000 per month, according to Transfer Markt.

FOOTBALL BAN

After making over 70 appearances in January 2016, Thandani Ntshumayelo tested positive for a banned substance and was handed a four-year ban from football.

Reports have it that traces of cocaine were found in his system. Against the ban, Thandani Ntshumayelo lost nearly everything he held dearly. The friends. The money. The adulation. The game.

“Honestly, I felt so alone at the time. I had lost people I thought were my friends. I even lost hope of ever playing again,” said the star during a 2018 interview.

He suffered from severe depression and almost took his life. However, on appeal, the ban was reduced to two years.

Thandani Ntshumayelo returned to football in 2019. However, it was never the same, and this was one of the reasons why he retired early.

In 2023, Thandani Ntshumayelo retired from football. During one of his interviews, the star said, “I rushed going back [to football], that’s why maybe something didn’t go well.

BIBO: ‘I WENT BACK TO SCHOOL’

However, months after his retirement, the rumour mill had it that he was totally unrecognisable, leaving many trying to connect the dots about his whereabouts and what he has been up to.

Little is known about his occupation. Thandani Ntshumayelo recently revealed that he is now pursuing law.

Thandani Ntshumayelo is pursuing a Higher Certificate in Law at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Speaking to Far Post two months ago he said, “I went back to school, I’m studying again, I’m doing LLB High qualification. I’m studying Law now. I’m studying at Unisa, started this year.”

After hanging his boots, former Orlando Pirates star Thandani ‘Bibo’ Ntshumayelo returned to school and is currently studying law.

Where is Joslin Smith? Psychic reveals new ‘heartbreaking’ details [video] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/joslin-smith-found-update-latest-news-kandis-starr-maryke-watch/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 18:15:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166406 Psychic Kandis Starr has shared what she believes are more heartbreaking details regarding the disappearance of Saldanha Bay girl Joslin Smith.

The six-year-old went missing from her home in the Middelpos informal settlement in the community of Diazville on 19 February.

Joslin’s mother, Kelly Smith, her partner, Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis, and two others have been charged with kidnapping and child trafficking. They are currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, the little girl is yet to be found.

KANDIS STARR ‘CHANNELS JOSLIN SMITH’: DISTURBING DETAILS

Kandis Starr, who specialises in paranormal justice, has expressed a keen interest in Joslin Smith’s disappearance. Speaking to The South African, Kandis previously revealed that her goal is to help authorities find missing children.

In multiple supernatural sessions, the US medium has shared clues about what she believes happened to Joslin, whom she believes is dead.

Her latest spirit box session, sees Kandis requested her “spirit guides” help her “connect” to “Joslin Smith.”

In it, she communicates with the voice of a little girl, whom she believes is Joslin.

The voice name-drops the four accused, including her mother, and claims that she was abused and possibly used for witchcraft. The name frequently mentions the town of “Saldanha.”

It also mentions that her mother is pregnant with another baby.

Later, Kandis Starr gives an energy reading using an electromagnetic pod used in paranormal investigations.

The sessions sees a “siren” go off when the “spirit of Joslin Smith” positively responds to questions.

Such questions include:

“Did your mother leave you with men that hurt you?”

“Did your mother know these men were hurting you?”

“Has your mother ever hurt you?”

Take a look…

TIKTOKER MARYKE ALSO HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

Meanwhile, TikToker Maryke Erasmus – who Gayton McKenzie has sued after she claimed he was involved in Joslin Smith’s kidnapping – has also shared an update.

Speaking from a “divine intervention,” the  Laingsburg woman believes that the missing girl is alive and “on her way home.”

She said in a video: “We will finally see her soon.”

How do hamsters change the colour of their urine?

Hamsters have a unique ability to change the color of their urine based on their diet. This is due to the presence of pigments, such as beta-carotene, in certain foods. When hamsters consume foods rich in these pigments, their bodies absorb them and excrete them through their urine, causing it to change color. Carrots are a particularly common food that can lead to orange or even red urine in hamsters. This fascinating quirk of their biology is a testament to their adaptability and the intricate relationship between diet and bodily functions.

How to help your pet cope with separation anxiety https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/how-to-help-your-pet-cope-with-separation-anxiety/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 16:00:22 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166786 Separation anxiety is a common problem among pets, especially dogs. It can manifest in various behaviors, including excessive barking, destructive chewing, whining, and even house soiling. If your pet is exhibiting signs of separation anxiety, here are some strategies to help them cope:

1. Gradual Exposure to Separation Anxiety:

  • Short absences: Start by leaving your pet alone for short periods, gradually increasing the duration as they become comfortable. This allows them to gradually adjust to being alone.
  • Positive associations: Make leaving a positive experience by rewarding your pet with treats or praise before and after your absence. This helps them associate your departure with positive outcomes.

2. Crate Training:

  • Safe space: A crate can provide a safe and secure space for your pet. Ensure the crate is comfortable and not too small. It should be a place where your pet feels safe and protected.
  • Positive reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement techniques to associate the crate with good things, such as treats and playtime. This will help your pet see the crate as a positive space.

3. Mental Stimulation to Reduce Separation Anxiety:

  • Puzzle toys: Keep your pet’s mind engaged with puzzle toys that require them to work to get treats. These toys can help prevent boredom and anxiety.
  • Interactive play: Spend quality time playing interactive games with your pet, such as fetch or hide-and-seek. This will help strengthen your bond and provide mental stimulation.

4. Professional Help for Separation Anxiety:

  • Veterinarian consultation: A veterinarian can rule out any underlying medical conditions and provide advice on behavior modification. They can also recommend appropriate treatments if necessary.
  • Dog trainer: A qualified dog trainer can offer personalized guidance and training techniques to address separation anxiety. They can provide tailored advice and support based on your pet’s specific needs.

5. Environmental Enrichment:

  • Familiar objects: Leave familiar objects, such as your clothes or a blanket, with your pet to provide comfort. These objects can help them feel more connected to you even when you’re away.
  • Routine: Maintain a consistent daily routine to help your pet feel secure and predictable. A regular schedule can provide a sense of stability and reduce anxiety.

Remember, patience and consistency are key when addressing separation anxiety. By implementing these strategies and working with a professional if needed, you can help your pet overcome their anxiety and enjoy a happier, healthier life.

Thanks to her huge following, Khanyi Mbau is undoubtedly a trending figure whenever she posts on social media.

KHANYI MBAU GOES UNDER THE KNIFE AGAIN FOR A FACE MAKEOVER

TV reality star Khanyi Mbau set social media abuzz after she shared a clip of her road to recovery after going under the knife for a picture-perfect look.

In the now-viral video, she revealed that she had an Eyelid Surgery called Blepharoplasty.

According to Cleveland Clinic, the cosmetic procedure reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids.

Confirmed reports also have it that Khanyi Mbau also had a subnasal lip lift, a cosmetic procedure that tightens the skin around the mouth and nose.

The two surgeries have become common among celebrities and influencers in recent years.

Rumour mill has it that Katie Price is one of the influencers who has had one of the most preferred lip lift surgery the subnasal lip lift.

However, many celebrities, including reality TV star Jojo Robinson, have been vocal about surgeries and their picture-perfect looks back home.

She once hogged headlines when she revealed on air that she has splurged over R800 000 on surgeries. Jojo Robinson has had over 20 surgeries.

MZASI REACTS

No doubt Khanyi Mbau’s now-viral video has since thrust her into top trends, with many poking fun at her once famous husband Mandla Mthembu, who went awol.

Some were poking fun at her new complexion that has often thrust her into top trends over the years.

An X user made it known that Mandla Mthembu would not recognise Khanyi Mbau after her recent facelift.

The once-celebrated businessman was married to the reality star between 2006 to 2009. Mandla Mthembu reportedly introduced Khanyi Mbau to the soft life.

Since their fallout, little has been heard about the once-celebrated multi-millionaire who shares a daughter with Mbau.

The X user commented, “Mandla Mthembu won’t even recognise her.” Another user added, “Is this Khanyi Mbau on frame two? Even Mandla Mthembu will not recognise her.”

Popular X user @touch_breeze commented, “Her grandkids gonna be confused when seeing her pictures.”

MAKING HEADLINES

However, Khanyi Mbau has been a vocal supporter of skin-lightening products and has had them over the years. She once revealed that being light made her stand above the rest.

Comedian Mpho Popps questioned her relationship with Lasizwe Dambuza during one of the recent episodes of Awkward Dates.

Asked about his relationship with Mbau, Lasiswe Dambuza revealed that the two share the same father. However, Mpho Popps jokingly said Khanyi Mbau was white, and the two laughed it off.

Some have even shared images of the TV personality before she had professional work done on her face and body.

KHANYI MBAU CLAPS BACK AT CRITICISM

In an Instagram post, Khanyi Mbau vlogged about her experience undergoing another invasive plastic surgery operation.

This time around, it was a blepharoplasty – a procedure that tightens and removes loose skin around the eyes. She had also had a subnasal lift lift, which lifts and tightens the skin around the mouth and nose.

In another post, she revealed that she was in recovery but enjoying the “five-star treatment” of her medical clinic. She also took the opportunity to clap back at critics who claimed she was now “unrecognisable.”

One follower asked, “How will Capitec recognise you?” Khanyi responded, ” Investec knows my voice.” She also clapped back at another who claimed she would no longer resemble her passport image.

MISS KWARA THANKS SOUTH AFRICANS FOR SUPPORT

In recent days, South Africans on social media users have shifted their support from Chidimma Adetshina to Ufa, known as Miss Kwara.

For many, this is based on her literally standing out from the crowd as a plus-size model and embracing her darker shade of skin.

The support has seen Ufa receive over 3000 votes from South Africans, who hope to fast-track her to the Top 10 of the pageant. The results will be revealed at the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant in Lagos this weekend.

In Instagram Stories this week, Miss Kwara thanked her supporters for their encouragement and kind words.

Miss Kwara added that her foreign fans had given her South African names like “Nomathemba, Nyiko, and Mbali.”

She jokingly added: “Maybe I’ll move to SA.”

Currently, Ufa has received over 10 000 votes, or 11 % of votes in the competition.

Chidimma has over 15 000 or 17% of the votes.

Nikki Glaser to host Golden Globes https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/nikki-glaser-to-host-golden-globes/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:29:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166526 The Golden Globes has a new host, and she’s ready to shake things up. Nikki Glaser is famous for her sharp wit and fearless humour.

She will be leading the charge at the 82nd annual Golden Globes.

NIKKI GLASER AND THE GOLDEN GLOBES

Nikki Glaser’s reputation for no-holds-barred comedy has generated great excitement.

This will be her debut as host, according to Daily Mail.

If her recent performances are any indication, she will deliver a memorable night for the audience. Nikki Glaser’s selection as host has certainly stirred excitement.

NIKKI GLASER’S ENERGY

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes,” Glaser said.

“It’s one of my favourite nights of television. Now I get a front row seat—actually, I think I have to host from the stage.”

Her enthusiasm is palpable, and it’s clear she’s ready to take on the challenge.

THE GOLDEN GLOBES

The Golden Globes, set to air on 5 January 2025, will broadcast live and be available for streaming, according to Variety.

This prestigious award show celebrates both film and television. The show received criticism for being outdated in recent years.

However, Glaser’s appointment could signal a much-needed shift. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy,” she added.

“It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked. At least, I hope so.”

CANDID HUMOUR

Glaser showcased her humour by hosting Tom Brady’s roast, which was a hit, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Her candid and irreverent style was a standout. It’s this same bold approach that she will bring to the Golden Globes.

“Some of my favourite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues. Tina, Amy, or Ricky said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear,” Glaser reflected.

UNMATCHED COMEDY

“I hope to continue that time-honoured tradition, even if it might get me cancelled.”

The Golden Globes has a history of featuring provocative humour, and Glaser seems poised to continue that legacy.

“Nikki Glaser brings a fresh and unmatched candour to her comedy and to the Golden Globes,” said Jay Penske, Chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions and Penske Media Corporation.

“Her unapologetic style made her an obvious and compelling choice as host for this year’s event.”

NIKKI GLASER’S UNFILTERED HUMOUR

Helen Hoehne, President of the Golden Globes, echoed this sentiment.

“Nikki Glaser is a comedic powerhouse. Her daring and unfiltered humour perfectly matches the Golden Globes,” she said.

“She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep the audience entertained all night.”

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Glaser’s career has been on the rise, with her critically acclaimed HBO comedy special Good Clean Filth in 2022 and an EMMY nomination for Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die.

She also hosts The Nikki Glaser Podcast and recently wrapped her global THE GOOD GIRL stand-up tour.

With her current ALIVE AND UNWELL tour extending through May 2025, Glaser’s plate is full, but she remains excited about her new role.

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER

Jenna Ortega stuns in red at Venice Film Festival https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/jenna-ortega-stuns-in-red-at-venice-film-festival/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:41:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166372 The 81st Venice Film Festival opened with a bang, and Jenna Ortega stole the spotlight with a spectacular fashion choice.

As the world eagerly awaited the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ortega made a memorable entrance.

JENNA ORTEGA IN RED

She channelled the spirit of the original film with a stunning Dior Haute Couture ensemble, according to Harpers Bazaar.

Arriving at the Palazzo del Cinema, Ortega made a striking impression. She dazzled in a flowing red gown. The dress was both a tribute to the past and a statement of modern glamour.

The actress stepped out in a backless, heart-shaped bodice dress, paired with a voluminous floor-length tulle skirt.

JENNA ORTEGA PAYS TRIBUTE

The gown, designed by Dior, featured delicate spaghetti straps and a design reminiscent of Winona Ryder’s iconic wedding dress from the original Beetlejuice.

“It was an honour to pay homage to Lydia’s look,” Ortega said.

“This gown felt like the perfect way to connect the past with the present.”

Ortega’s fashion choice wasn’t just a nod to the original film but a bold fashion statement in its own right.

THE RED JENNA ORTEGA DRESS

The whimsical dress, with its gauzy layers, was complemented by a pair of sky-high silky platforms, according to Phil Star.

Her dramatic smoky eye and bright red lip added to the ensemble’s impact.

Silver and diamond jewellery, including twisted bracelets and a branchlike necklace, completed the look.

Earlier in the day, Ortega opted for a burgundy Paul Smith double-breasted suit. This outfit was a playful nod to the eccentric attire of Beetlejuice himself, further enhancing the day’s theme.

QUIRKY STYLE IN VENICE

Not to be overshadowed, Winona Ryder made her own statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dressed in a skirt suit with a cropped blazer, her outfit retained echoes of Lydia Deetz’s quirky style while fitting seamlessly into the high-fashion environment of Venice.

The film festival’s opening night was not only a fashion highlight but also a celebration of cinematic history.

BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE

Fans highly anticipated the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 classic. It brought back beloved characters played by Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara.

New faces like Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe joined the mix, promising a fresh take on the cult classic.

THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

The Venice Film Festival, known for showcasing some of the finest in international cinema, began on 28 August and will continue until 7 September.

The excitement surrounding Beetlejuice Beetlejuice added an extra layer of anticipation, making this year’s festival particularly noteworthy.

The Venice Film Festival has often served as a launchpad for global stars and trends, and Ortega’s bold choices exemplify how fashion and cinema can intertwine to create memorable moments.

THE BAR IS SET

As the festival progresses, all eyes will be on how the film performs and whether Ortega’s fashionable nod to the past will resonate with audiences globally.

For now, her entrance has certainly set the bar high, and the world will be watching to see what other surprises the Venice Film Festival has in store.

South Africa study transforms TB treatment policy globally https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/south-africa-study-transforms-tuberculosis-treatment-policy-globally-proudly-sa-latest-breaking-news/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:24:38 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166382 A groundbreaking initiative, BEAT-Tuberculosis, has become the world’s first programme in the battle against drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) for all population groups, influencing the international TB treatment policy of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The principal investigator leading this study, Dr Francesca Conradie, explained that the study’s success in demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of the new short oral regimen in these key populations marks a pivotal step toward a more comprehensive and equitable healthcare strategy for TB.

“The BEAT-Tuberculosis study represents a groundbreaking approach in the fight against tuberculosis, particularly with its inclusive research methodology.

“By incorporating pregnant women and children into the clinical trials, the study has expanded the understanding of TB treatment’s efficacy and safety across broader demographics,” said Conradie.

BEAT-Tuberculosis study was conducted over the past six years

The primary aim was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a novel shortened treatment regimen for DR-TB compared with the established standard of care.

The standard treatment consisted of a regimen of seven drugs administered over a minimum of nine months, in comparison to a regimen of four to five medications, which included newer agents like bedaquiline and delamanid, and was administered over only six months.

The BEAT-Tuberculosis clinical study was conducted at the Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) Isango Lethemba TB Research Unit in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal over the past six years.

The study began in 2019 and despite the formidable challenges posed by COVID-19, over 400 participants were enrolled across study sites in both provinces.

The study’s other objective was to build research capacity for DR-TB in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, through community engagement and training healthcare personnel in clinical research methodologies for TB treatment.

“This collaborative effort received crucial support from the National and Provincial Departments of Health that provided essential medication and laboratory infrastructure for safety and efficacy assessments,” said Conradie.

The local research study was made possible by the collaboration of the National Department of Health, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and executed by the University of the Witwatersrand.

The results from the study have influenced the WHO policy on the treatment of TB, and at the same time put the Global South centre stage for driving improved treatment for all.

National Department of Health’s Chief Director of TB Control and Management, Professor Norbert Ndjeka, said that in 2022, an estimated 280 000 people developed TB in South Africa, while 54 000 died from the disease.

Second leading cause of death

TB remains a threat to global public health and the second leading cause of death in South Africa.

“With this concerning observation in mind, we acknowledge the BEAT Tuberculosis project as an exemplary and concerted effort to advance TB treatment and research capabilities, poised to bring about transformative changes in RR-TB management worldwide.

“While the study was originally intended to inform local treatment guidelines, the results are now set to benefit patients everywhere.”

USAID Southern Africa Mission Director, Leslie Marbury, believes that the National Department of Health and his organisation have improved TB patient care worldwide.

Marbury said the organisation celebrates the 400 participants who made this trial possible and brought the world closer to ending TB.

“We also thank all BEAT Tuberculosis stakeholders, including the National Department of Health, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Health Departments, and local medical facilities, for their dedication and commitment to this globally recognised study,” she added.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of TB are a cough that lasts more than two weeks, weight loss, drenching night sweats and a fever.

Anyone with these symptoms is urged to go to their local clinic.

“You will be asked to produce sputum or phlegm which will be tested for TB. If the test is positive, the correct treatment will be started.”

The South African website applauds all those involved in this proudly South African initiative.

Wendy Williams spotted for the first time after year-long hiatus https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/wendy-williams-spotted-for-the-first-time-after-year-long-hiatus/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:22:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166237 Wendy Williams, the legendary talk show host, has resurfaced after more than a year of keeping a low profile.

The 60-year-old star was recently seen at Bolingo Balance, a holistic store in Newark, New Jersey.

WENDY WILLIAMS OUT AND ABOUT

Her unexpected appearance comes as a pleasant surprise to fans who have been concerned about her well-being.

An employee at Bolingo Balance, the wellness shop run by Victor Bowman—son of the renowned herbalist Dr. Sebi—shared details of Wendy’s visit with Page Six.

“Wendy was sharp, upbeat, and very bubbly,” the staff member revealed. “She even had a sit-down with Victor Bowman to discuss health products.”

WENDY WILLIAMS THE LEGENDARY TALK SHOW HOST

Wendy’s son, Kevin Hunter Jr., accompanied her on this visit, which reportedly took place around mid-August.

Wendy Williams is more than just a talk show host. She’s an icon of perseverance and resilience.

Her journey from radio to television has been nothing short of inspiring, making her a familiar face in many households.

WENDY WILLIAMS’ HEALTH STRUGGLES

Her struggles with health, however, have been well-documented, causing many to worry about her future, according to USA Today.

Wendy’s visit to the holistic store wasn’t just a casual shopping trip. She was keen on learning more about natural health products.

“She talked about circulation improvement but didn’t want to get into too much detail on their first meeting,” the employee added.

WENDY WILLIAMS AND WELLNESS

Wendy plans to return for further consultations, indicating that she’s serious about exploring alternative wellness options.

Victor Bowman shared a photo of himself with Wendy on Facebook. This marks her first public sighting since March 2023.

The former radio host looked cheerful, a stark contrast to the concerns raised about her health over the past few years, according to News Week.

HEALTH CONDITIONS

The wellness visit seems to be a positive step for Wendy, who has been battling multiple health conditions. These include frontotemporal dementia, aphasia, Graves’ disease, and lymphedema.

Wendy Williams’ health issues have taken a toll on her public life. Wendy was last seen in New York City in March 2023, dressed in all black, as she returned to her apartment.

That appearance followed a public announcement in February that she had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia.

COURT-ORDERED GUARDIANSHIP

Her team’s statement left fans in shock, as these conditions have severely impacted her ability to communicate and live independently.

Adding to her struggles, Wendy Williams has been under court-ordered guardianship since 2022.

This move came after Wells Fargo, her bank, expressed concerns about her well-being and possible financial exploitation.

A GLIMMER OF HOP

The guardianship has reportedly strained her relationships, with her family claiming they have been unable to contact her.

Despite these challenges, Wendy’s recent outing suggests a glimmer of hope.

The bubbly personality that endeared her to millions seems to be making a comeback.

HOLISTIC PRODUCTS

Her son, Kevin Jr., who has been a constant support, played a crucial role in explaining the holistic products to her during their visit.

The store employee mentioned that Wendy received several herbal products, including sarsaparilla and bottano oil, both known for their skin benefits.

FACING ADVERSITY

As Wendy continues her journey towards better health, her fans around the world, including those in South Africa, remain hopeful.

Her story is a reminder of the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Wendy’s life has been filled with highs and lows, but her recent appearance shows she’s not done yet. She’s still fighting, and that’s something worth celebrating.

‘MasterChef SA’ season five: Ketsia Malela leaves kitchen https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/masterchef-south-africa-season-five-ketsia-malela-exit/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 07:03:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165361 Ketsia Malela, who hails from Kyalami, Johannesburg ended her MasterChef South Africa season five journey, on the latest episode of the cooking series, which aired on Saturday 24 August on S3.

KETSIA MALELA LEAVES ‘MASTERCHEF SOUTH AFRICA’ SEASON FIVE

MasterChef South Africa judge Justine Drake broke down in tears when telling home cook Ketsia Malela (31) Kyalami, Johannesburg, that her food journey on the show had come to an end because of a bland flatbread and tuna salad dish.

However, an emotional Justine told Ketsia that she “cooked like a star” and that she would never forget her sterling interpretation of the challenging monochromatic garment in the food and fashion challenge.

Ketsia landed on the chopping board the past week when only six MasterChef South Africa contestants had to fight it out in the kitchen. The other half a dozen home cooks were saved from elimination after winning the first team challenge at the world-famous Durbanville Hills Winery in the previous episode.

The home cooks had to keep their cool when the heat reached boiling point: Bridget Mangwandi, Ketsia Malela, Lona Rode, Nash Zambila, Penny Rider, and Refe Dimbaza.

MasterChef South Africa Season five airs on S3 (formerly SABC3) on Saturdays at 19:30. There is also a rebroadcast on SABC2 on Sundays at 18:30 as well as S3 on Wednesdays at 18:00.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE EPISODE?

The contestants were tasked with showcasing their cooking prowess by transforming month-end fridge and pantry leftovers into gourmet pay-day next-overs. The twist: the leftovers in the Beko fridge at their workstations represented one of the judges’ typical personal leftovers. Furthermore, they only had access to 20 classic frugal South African food items, mainly canned food, and fish was compulsory for this do-or-die meal.

Soon after the clock started ticking down the challenge’s 60-minute time limit, madness ensued in the MasterChef kitchen. Besides having to think on their feet whilst frantically raiding their fridges and finding the right canned food, the comments and advice from the winning team on the gantry added much noise and more pressure.

Although evictee Ketsia initially panicked when realizing that yoghurt was a missing ingredient for her intended yoghurt flatbread, the judges were more concerned about some other contestants during the cook-off.

At Lona’s workstation, it was also an uphill battle. First, the dough for his potstickers was too soft, and after adding more flour, he burned the batch and had to start from scratch

However, it baffled the judges that Ketsia did not use Justine’s roasted chicken, the ingredient that had served her well in the past. Still, Ketsia’s flatbread and tuna salad dish looked exciting and appetizing.

After all the hustle and bustle in the kitchen and the six home cooks’ nerve-wracking final presentation to the judges, Penny and Refe’s dishes came out tops – a big feat and breakthrough moment for these ladies who had not received such recognition before.

The bottom two dishes belonged to Lona and Ketsia. In her exit interview, Ketsia said she was happy about how far she progressed in the competition

“I thought I was out from the beginning, so I’m proud of myself. I know my friends and family will be proud of me too,” she said.

Fancy being paid to live in Spain? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fancy-being-paid-to-live-in-spain/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 07:02:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165774 Like parts of Italy, Extremadura in Spain is trying to attract digital nomads to move and live there.

Several countries have tightened up their golden visa and digital nomad programmes in recent times.

That said, one region in Spain is trying to attract people. It is even offering financial support to those who move there.

MOVE TO EXTREMADURA

The regional government of Extremadura is offering digital nomads up to €15,000 (R 297 000) to move to the area.

Extremadura is an autonomous Spanish community bordering Portugal. It is one of Spain’s lesser-visited regions but is an attractive location.

However, the area is home to picturesque nature reserves, scenic mountain ranges and an ancient city with Roman ruins.

ATTRACTING REMOTE WORKERS

The area has one of the lowest populations in Spain and is one of the least-developed regions. It also has one of Spain’s lowest GDPs per capita.

To grow the local population and the economy, authorities in Extremadura have set aside €2 million (R 39.6 million) to attract 200 remote workers and digital nomads to the region.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Extremadura seeks remote workers who are highly qualified professionals in the tech industry.

Applicants are required to work remotely – through the exclusive use of media, IT systems, telematics and information fields.

Those who wish to apply must commit to maintaining a remote job and living in Extremadura (Spain) for at least two years.

HOW TO APPLY

Non-EU nationals can apply as long as they already participate in Spain’s digital nomad visa scheme.

Those not in possession of a digital nomad visa will need to apply for this first and have it approved by Spanish authorities as well as obtain a residency document before applying for the Extremadura scheme.

The opening date for applications is not yet confirmed but authorities say it will be the day after publication of the scheme in Extremadura’s official gazette.

Euronews says this is likely to be around mid-September.

GRANTS PAID TO REMOTE WORKERS

Women, young people (under 30 years of age) and those who relocate to towns in Extremadura with populations of under 5 000 people are eligible for a €10 000 (R 196 000) grant.

Others will receive grants of €8 000 (R158 000).

After two years, those in the first category who choose to stay on another year will receive a second payment of €5 000 (R99 800).

Those who qualified for the lower amount will receive €4 000 (R79 000).

HOW TO APPLY

Applications should indeed be submitted electronically, using the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point.

Applicants must be in possession of a digital certificate or electronic Spanish ID card which allows for electronic identification.

Authorities also state that applications will remain open until all the funds covering around 200 digital nomads have been allocated.

This is expected to take no less than a month but no more than a year.

Khanyi Mbau gets ANOTHER facelift [video] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/khanyi-mbau-age-before-plastic-surgery-dubai-face-latest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 06:53:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166131 Khanyi Mbau has shocked her followers by revealing the results of yet another facelift.

The 38-year-old  socialite and reality TV star lives in Dubai with her boyfriend, Kudzai Mushonga, and is known for her love of plastic surgery and skin bleaching.

KHANYI MBAU SHOWS OFF FACELIFT

In an Instagram post, Khanyi Mbau revealed that she had undergone a facial procedure.

This time around, it was a blepharoplasty – a procedure that tightens and removes loose skin around the eyes. She had also had a subnasal lift lift, which lifts and tightens the skin around the mouth and nose.

She captioned a post-surgery video: “Now we bake, bought a new face.

“I know, I know; before we all lose it, it’s still very fresh and super tight. It will take a few weeks for it to cook.”

Of her motivation behind the surgery, she said: “I grew tired of Botox and fillers every three months. Now looking for a permanent solution to a structured tight face.

She added, “HOW DOES IT FEEL? TIGHT!! I feel wrapped in cling wrap. I can’t wait to see the final results. It’s still going to get worse before it gets better.”

In June, Khanyi credited facial threads for her youthful look. Many of her followers agreed that she looked “like a 21-year-old.”

PLASTIC SURGERY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

Khanyi Mbau is an open book about her beauty enhancements.

The actress and socialite’s aesthetic work includes:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Nose job
  • Liposuction and body sculpting
  • Fillers and botox
  • Skin lightening
  • Veneers and surgery to “push back” her gums.
  • Hair implants

In an interview with Anele Mdoda on the SABC 3 show Real Talk, Khanyi Mbau claimed that she was unfazed by criticism of work done on her face and body or claims that she was “un-African.”

She said: “I am not shy of being black. I am very black, but I am the free black. The liberated and free black. The one who, if I want to do something, I do it, regardless of what people say.”

Mariah Carey speaks out after losing mom and sister on same day https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/mariah-carey-speaks-out-losing-mom-sister-same-day-patricia-alison/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 06:29:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165426 American singer Mariah Carey spoke out after she lost her mother, Patricia and sister Alison on the same day over the past weekend.

MARIAH CAREY LOSES MOM AND SISTER ON THE SAME DAY

Touch My Body hitmaker Mariah Carey, who has a pair of twins with TV host Nick Cannon, lost both her mom and sister on the same day over the past weekend. Mariah told People that she is heartbroken after losing both her mother, Patricia and sister Alison on the same day.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer, 55, said in an exclusive statement to People.

She went on to say that she felt blessed to spend the last week with her mother before she had passed away.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she continued.

“I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added.

The cause of death of both Mariah’s mom and sister have not yet been revealed.

THE SINGER, HER MOM AND SIBLINGS

Mariah had a complex relationship with her mom and sister. Patricia was married to Alfred Roy Carey, and together they had three children – Alison, Mariah and Morgan. The pair later divorced when Mariah was three years old.

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” she wrote in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, published in 2020.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.

However, Mariah still maintained a relationship with her mother, who she expressed, did her best. While she also stated that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with both siblings, Alison and Morgan.

Skip the Queue at Home Affairs: Here’s the Secret! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/skip-the-queue-at-home-affairs-heres-the-secret/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 06:19:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165428 A scenario we can all relate to

Imagine this: You’ve been tasked with obtaining a new unabridged birth certificate from the Department of Home Affairs.

You take a day’s leave at great cost, set your alarm for the crack of dawn, determined to get there early and avoid the inevitable queue. But when you arrive, you find yourself surrounded by a sea of people who’ve been there since 05:00, all with the same goal in mind.

Hours pass, your patience wears thin, and you’re still nowhere near the front of the queue. By the time you’re done, if you get in the building at all, and if no one says that the “system is down”, you’ve already used up a full day’s leave.

Now you have to wait, maybe months, until you hopefully get an SMS (only to SA numbers) to stand in a queue again to collect it, hopefully without errors.

Battle of national anthems: Which performance was your favourite? [videos] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/springboks-vs-all-blacks-test-schedule-national-anthem-watch/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 17:38:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166028 South Africans are waiting with bated breath for this weekend’s clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks. They’re also anticipating another emotional rendition of the national anthem, this time sung by the Mzansi Youth Choir.

The rivals’ clash is one of two that will take place on 31 October and 7 September at Ellis Park (now Emirates Airline Park) and the DHL Stadium.

WHICH NATIONAL ANTHEM PERFORMANCE WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?

The Springboks are in the middle of their 2024 test match schedule. In recent weeks, they have played Ireland, Portugal, Australia, and Wales.

We’ve also witnessed some amazing – and less than impressive – renditions of the national anthem.

Here’s a look back at them in chronological order.

Hercules Smith

In June, Pretoria singer Hercules Smith sang at the first Springboks match in Twickenham. Although the Boks kickstarted their winning streak, Hercules’s performance – likely marred by sound issues – was hailed as one of the worst in recent years.

KB Motsilanyane

In July, actress and singer KB delivered a phenomenal performance at the Springboks’ first match on home soil at Loftus.

Her moving execution involved allowing the crowd to finish singing Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika.

Ntokozo Mbambo

A week later, gospel singer Ntokoko of the Joyous Celebration group performed another emotional rendition of the national anthem in Durban.

Jody Williams

The 2007 Idols SA winner was next on the list, returning to the spotlight to sing the national anthem in Bloemfontein.

The singing competition winner  – who previously vowed to quit music – performed at the Springboks first-ever test match against Portugal.

Micasa lead singer J’Something – who was born in Portugal – performed the anthem on behalf of his birth country.

Bradley Kalo

In August, Cape Town born singer Bradley, now living in Brisbane, sang the anthem at the Springbboks vs Australia game.

The star united expats in song and dance outside the Suncorp Stadium.

Bobby van Jaarsveld

A week later, Afrikaans pop star Bobby performed the anthem in the pouring rain in Perth.

“What an honour,” he said of the opportunity to sing on behalf of the national team.

MZANSI YOUTH CHOIR GEARING UP FOR BEST ONE YET?

Meanwhile, SA Rugby confirmed that the Mzansi Youth Choir had been tasked with performing the national anthem at the highly-anticipated Springboks vs All Blacks game.

It’s not the first time the group of vibrant singers have performed Nkosi Sikeli’ iAfrika. In 2021, the group performed alongside Lira when the Boks played the British and Irish Lions in Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.

They’re also credited with making America’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell cry with their tear-jerking performance in the US competition last year.

‘I’m willing to help him’: Mandla N on Carlo Radebe’s struggles https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/im-willing-to-help-him-mandla-n-on-carlo-radebes-struggles/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 15:45:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165960 Black Brain Pictures executive director Mandla Ngcongwane, affectionately known as Mandla N, has revealed that he is willing to help troubled actor Carlo Radebe after he fell on tough times.

With an illustrious career spanning years, Carlo Radebe is arguably one of the best actors to come from South Africa.

MANDLA N: ‘I’M WILLING TO HELP HIM’

The seasoned actor is best known for his on-screen character of Duke Ngcobo on the e.tv series Backstage.

Carlo Radebe has starred in several productions, including iNumber Number and How To Steal 2-Million.

However, the actor hasn’t starred in any production in the last three years and has been struggling to make ends meet.

Earlier this year, he hogged headlines when it was reported that he needed assistance to make ends meet.

Against the plea, he reportedly received donations, but the actor recently revealed that some of the promises which were made never materialised.

Earlier this month, Carlo Radebe took to his Facebook page to plead with good Samaritans to assist him as he struggled to make ends meet.

Against the backdrop of his second plea, Mandla N, who has worked with the celebrated actor, made it known that he wanted to have him on his team.

Mandla N is best known for being the brains behind some of the biggest productions in South Africa and has been credited for thrusting a host of now-seasoned actors into the limelight.

Speaking to TimesLive, Black Brain Pictures executive director said, “I’m willing to help him. We deal with audition methods when gathering our casts. I need to engage with the channels to secure something solid.

“He is a great actor, and his name speaks for itself. My hands are tied as the channel must give the green light.”

CARLO RADEBE OPENS UP ABOUT HIS STRUGGLES

The troubled actor was a recent guest on Podcast and Chill with MacG

Speaking about his struggles, he said, “After 19 years, I have found myself alone. When you lose your job, you lose your car and your apartment, and you turn around and see how many friends you have.”

Carlo Radebe added, “I don’t blame people. It’s survival of the fittest out there. People don’t want that energy.”

Carlo Radebe also opened up about how he failed to network with others during the peak of his career.

“I never networked myself, and this is before social media… This is word to the wise: you cannot be marooned on an island thinking your lucky stars are going to be sparkling… you have to network,” he said.

The most environmentally active countries in the world https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/environmentally-active-countries-in-the-world-ranked-united-states-south-africa/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 14:08:38 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165949 Who’s the most environmentally active?

A new study has ranked the most environmentally active countries in the world – taking into account countries with the most active environmentalists and environmental NGOs globally.

Arka researched the 50 most populated countries in the world to identify the ones with the most active environmentalists.

The countries were selected based on the largest potential impact on the environment. Countries’ population, the amount of environmental political parties, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were gathered. Then, the amount of parties and organizations were added, divided by the population, to calculate how many organizations are available for one million inhabitants of each country. This data was analysed to create a scoring system, from a scale from 1-100.

The United States ranked number one, hosting the most active environmentalists, with a composite score of 69. It also has the most environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of 1800. For one million Americans there are around 5 environmental organizations. American environmentalists are also very active in politics, with 12 political parties.

India then ranked as the second most environmentally active country in the world, with a score of 68. For 1.4 billion Indians, there are 1200 environmental NGOs. There is almost one environmental organization for 1 million people.

Germany took the third spot, with a composite score of 62.4. German environmentalists are also the most active in politics, with 14 political parties for 83.5 million habitants. This country has 18 environmental organizations and parties for 1 million people living there.

South Africa placed at number 16, with a composite score of 27.3, four political parties, 900 environmental NGOs and also 15 environmental organizations for 1 million people living there.

When should I shower my pet with gifts? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/when-should-i-shower-my-pet-with-gifts/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 13:48:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165835 Giving your pet gifts can be a wonderful way to show your love and appreciation. It’s a gesture that can strengthen your bond and make them feel cherished. However, it’s important to consider the right timing and the appropriateness of the gift to ensure it truly benefits your furry friend.

Pet Gifts for Special Occasions

Special occasions provide excellent opportunities to shower your pet with gifts. Whether it’s their birthday, the anniversary of bringing them home, or a holiday like Christmas or Easter, a thoughtful present can make the day even more memorable. Consider their personality and interests when selecting a gift that will truly delight them.

Unexpected Pet Gifts

Sometimes, a small surprise can brighten your pet’s day, even without a special occasion. A new toy, a tasty treat, or a cozy blanket can show them that you care and are thinking of them. If your pet is feeling unwell or has experienced a stressful event, a comforting gift can help them relax and feel better.

Choosing the Right Gifts

When choosing gifts for your pet, it’s essential to consider their age, size, and breed. Puppies and kittens may have different needs than older pets, and larger breeds may require toys or treats that are specifically designed for their size. Pay attention to your pet’s interests and preferences to select gifts that they will truly enjoy.

Avoiding Overindulgence

Safety should always be a top priority when giving gifts to your pet. Avoid toys that contain small parts that could be swallowed, and choose treats that are appropriate for their diet. If you’re unsure about the safety of a particular gift, consult with your veterinarian.

While treats and toys can be wonderful gifts, it’s important to avoid overindulgence. Overfeeding your pet can lead to health problems, so ensure they receive a balanced diet. Additionally, providing too many toys can overwhelm them and make it difficult to choose which one to play with.

By following these guidelines, you can shower your pet with love and affection while ensuring their well-being and happiness. Remember, the most important thing is to choose gifts that are meaningful and show your pet how much you care.

Livid Kelly Khumalo goes on rant about CemAir [video] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/kelly-khumalo-senzo-meyiwa-murder-trial-cemair-watch/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 13:38:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165897 CemAir has come under fire again after singer Kelly Khumalo accused the airline of being a “sh*tty service.”

The performer is one of multiple South African artists who have accused their company of being unprofessional.

KELLY KHUMALO DRAGS CEMAIR IN VIRAL VIDEO

In a video rant posted on social media, Kelly Khumalo appeared flustered as she explained that her CemAir flights had been cancelled without her knowledge.

Speaking from a helpdesk likely at an airport terminal, the singer said: “This is what we have to deal with…sh*t service from CemAir. We missed our flight when we were there. It’s not on screens; they don’t even bother to send smses [to warn us]

She added: “South Africa must never support this sh*tty airline.”

Unfortunately, many South Africans did not have much sympathy for Kelly, who is widely rumoured to be behind the death of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa.

@Miz_Ruraltarain: “Kelly We support Senzo”

@inexist_33: “Surely, when you book a flight, you know what time it’s leaving.”

@BokamosoMc: “Clearly, CemAir is on Senzo Meyiwa’s side, and we stand with them.”

MORE CELBRITY RUN-INS

Kelly Khumalo is not the first celebrity to publicly criticise CemAir.

In March, the airlines made headlines after their brush with reality TV star Shamiso Mosaka. In a viral video, Shamiso accused the airline of racial profiling and kicking her off a flight after she said the F-word.

CemAir clapped back at the star in a statement, labelling her “unruly and abusive.”

In the aftermath, Somizi clapped back at CemAir’s statement.

In an Instagram Story, the media personality defended Shamiso. He posted: “Piece of s**t airline. Even with evidence, you are still defending racism”.

Fellow TV personality Bridget Masinga tweeted: “What the hell did I just watch? CemAir,  you should be ashamed of the discrimination and conduct of your crew assisted by SAPS inflicted on Shamiso. That young lady is owed a sincere public apology for the very public humiliation.”

Ntsiki Mazwai also had her say. She tweeted: “How did Shamiso keep her cool? What a violent experience…..the air hostess should catch charges”.

In 2022, CemAir came under fire for allegedly discriminating against disabled music artist DJ Kabila.

In a video, Kabila accused CemAir of being the first airline to charge him additionally for using a passenger-aid unit (PAU), a device that allows wheelchairs to board airplanes.

His video was retweeted by DJ Black Coffee, who himself has a disabled hand.

He tweeted of the incident: “This can’t be it.”

WATCH: Gogo Skhotheni denies Mpumelelo Mseleku dating rumours https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/gogo-skhotheni-denies-mpumelelo-mseleku-dating-rumours/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 13:19:06 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165786 Reality TV star and DJ Gogo Skhotheni is making headlines after she opened up about her alleged affair with Mpumelelo Mseleku.

The reality star has been topping trends after singer Queen Lolly, Mpumelelo Mseleku’s ex-girlfriend and Skotheni’s former friend, claimed that the DJ was having an affair with Mseleku while she was still married to her ex-husband.

GOGO SKHOTHENI DENIES MPUMELELO MSELEKU DATING RUMOURS

Queen Lolly made the damning allegations while speaking on De Original Careless Podcast.

She has it that a friend who works with Gogo Skhotheni told her of the alleged affair that has since thrust the reality star into top trends.

“She said that at one of her events, they were all over each other while her husband, Monde Shange, was there.”

Against the trends, Gogo Skhotheni has since shared her side of the story. The reality star downplayed the allegations and made it known that she never had any ‘sexual encounter’ with Mseleku.

She downplayed the news in a now-viral clip. Gogo Skhotheni said, “I’ve never had any sexual encounter with Mpumelelo Mseleku. I swear on my ancestors’ lives. I met him when he came to my podcast.

“In my marriage, we never fought because of a third person. Just because we are separated does not mean it’s because of a third party.”

No doubt this is not the first time the star has hogged headlines with her dramatic love life. A few weeks ago, Gogo Skhotheni hogged headlines when she accused her husband, Monde Shange, of abuse.

She dropped the damning allegations on social media. However, Mzansi was also puzzled to learn that she once married two husbands.

NASTY FALLOUT

Surprisingly, Queen Lolly and Gogo Skhotheni used to be friends before their nasty fallout.

Queen Lolly has it that her then-friend Gogo Skhotheni allegedly betrayed her and used her name to boost her podcast.

“My friendship with Gogo Skhotheni was good until I realised she was not a friend, or rather, she did not consider me as her friend,” said Queen Lolly.

“When she had just started her podcast, she asked me to be a guest, and I agreed, but she kept making excuses almost three times,” she added.

However, she later revealed that she received a message on her Instagram from Gogo Maweni, who informed her that Skhotheni was interviewing her ex-boyfriend, Mpumelelo Mseleku, after Gogo Skhotheni ghosted her.

A recent study by flight booking site Wingie has analysed TripAdvisor reviews for the top 50 tourist experiences in every country. A number of keywords indicating whether an experience was perceived as underrated relative to the total number of reviews were used on these tourist attractions and an overall percentage score was then calculated to determine the ranking.

According to the research, Ahhh Ras Natango Gallery and Garden, Montego Bay, Jamaica, was crowned the most underrated tourist spot in the world. It received the highest proportion of underrated mentions compared to the number of reviews of any other landmark worldwide. Of 357 reviews, there were 712 underrated keywords or approximately two compliments per review.

The eco-tourism tropical retreat, perched 2 000 feet above sea level, was called ‘beautiful’ by over two-fifths (45%), with other top mentions including ‘amazing,’ ‘breathtaking,’ and a ‘must see.’ According to its profile, it also has a perfect five-star rating and ranks top among all things to do in Montego Bay.

Irish National Stud and Gardens, County Kildare, Ireland, ranked second among the most underrated places in the world. South Africa gets first-ever desert botanical garden https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/first-desert-botanical-garden-opens-up-in-south-africa/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 12:39:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165860 Richtersveld gets first-ever desert botanical garden

The Sendelingsdrift Rest Camp on the Richtersveld side of the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park now proudly boasts the country’s first desert botanical garden.

According to Tourism Update, this new garden is a collaboration between the South African National Parks (SANParks) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and features 24 themed floral beds showcasing the unique flora of South Africa’s desert biome.

The garden is the work of SANParks resident botanist Pieter van Wyk, who transformed an indigenous nursery in what is now the Richtersveld Desert Botanical Garden.

The Richtersveld region is renowned for having the highest percentage of succulent plants in the world. However, over 400 of these species are now threatened with extinction due to mining, poaching, overgrazing, and climate change.

SANParks to kick off National Parks Week 2024

South African National Parks (SAParks) also recently revealed the dates for their annual free access to national parks week.

In a statement, SANParks said that the 19th annual SA free access week will be held from 9 to 13 September 2024 and extended to 14 and 15 September at selected national parks.

“During this period free access is granted to most of the 21 national parks under the management of South African National Parks.” the parks body said in the statement.

The |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is on the list of national parks which will be free to visit during the National Parks Week.

What is free week?

Each year, SANParks hosts the free week as an initiative aimed at linking the SA national parks system to the global national movement and to showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks. The free week also provides all South Africans with the opportunity to explore their local National Park at absolutely no cost.

Free Week has seen an influx of day visitors in all participating parks since its inception in 2006. SANParks also uses this time to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage as protected and preserved by the national parks system.

Adele’s R2.3 billion pop-up stadium: A game changer for concerts https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/adeles-r2-3-billion-pop-up-stadium-a-game-changer-for-concerts/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 12:07:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165799 Adele has just finished her month-long residency in Munich, but the legacy she leaves behind is more than just a series of stunning performances at her pop-up stadium.

ADELE’S POP-UP STADIUM

Her R2.3 billion purpose-built pop-up stadium is about to make history as the world’s first portable stadium, according to Daily Mail.

Rewritten in Active Voice:

ABBA Voyage’s arena in East London inspired the creation of this cutting-edge venue, designed to travel the world. It will bring concerts closer to fans, no matter where they are.

The idea of a portable stadium might sound far-fetched, but it’s a reality.

POP-UP STADIUM ON THE MOVE

Adele’s final show in Munich is over, so they will dismantle the stadium and prepare it to move to a new city.

Constructed in just a few weeks, the stadium is designed to be easily transported and reassembled.

This concept allows artists to stay on tour without the need for permanent venues, according to The Guardian.

POP-UP STADIUMS: THE FUTURE OF LIVE PERFORMANCE?

An insider shared, “It would have been a catastrophic loss of money for an entire stadium to be built only for these ten Adele shows, even though the tickets aren’t cheap.”

They added, “But a load of different superstars, such as Beyoncé or Taylor Swift, could use the venue in years to come.”

While the stadium was specifically designed for Adele, its potential future uses are exciting, according to The Sun.

ADELE TAKES A BREAK

However, after her European tour, Adele is eager for a break.

She’ll be heading back to Las Vegas to wrap up her residency before taking some well-deserved time off.

The steep cost of the venue might explain why fans had to pay up to R8,000 for a ticket.

But not everyone felt they got their money’s worth. Some attendees in Munich were disappointed with their experience.

FEEDBACK FROM FANS

Fans in the seated pit found themselves standing on chairs just to get a view of the singer.

One frustrated fan posted online, “I paid R7,300 and I couldn’t see anything.

My friend was in the back for R1,400 and had the best view. I was fuming.”

This wasn’t an isolated case. Many fans shared similar frustrations online, with some deciding not to attend after hearing the complaints.

HIGH FRUSTRATIONS

These issues persisted throughout Adele’s residency, leading to growing concerns among ticket holders.

One particularly upset fan mentioned, “Security was ordering people down so we were all level.

It was an absolute joke. Paid all that money to barely see anything.” The venue, which can hold 80,000 people, also had some logistical issues.

NAVIGATING THE CONCERT

Nina Frenchy, who attended the concert in a wheelchair, described it as the “worst experience” of her life.

She had to navigate large stones outside the stadium, making it nearly impossible to get a taxi after the show.

“The organisation to get a taxi after the concert was horrible. They did not think of a way out for disabled people,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

CHANGING LIVE MUSIC

As Adele’s Munich residency comes to an end, her portable stadium is set to change the live music industry.

The concept of a mobile, reusable venue might just be the future of touring. However, as some Adele fans discovered, it’s not without its challenges.

Puppy-proofing your home: A comprehensive guide https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/puppy-proofing-your-home-a-comprehensive-guide/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 11:57:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165806 Preparing your home for a new puppy is essential to ensure their safety and well-being. Here’s a more detailed guide to help you puppy-proof your space:

Puppy-Proofing Hazardous Objects:

  • Cords: Tuck away cords for appliances, lamps, and blinds to prevent chewing and potential electrocution. Use cord covers or cable clips to keep them organized and out of reach.
  • Small objects: Remove any small items that could be swallowed, such as coins, buttons, or toys. Store these items in a secure location.
  • Toxic substances: Keep all cleaning products, medications, and pesticides out of reach. Store them in a locked cabinet or closet.
  • Plants: Research which plants are toxic to dogs and remove any harmful ones from your home or garden. Consider using pet-safe alternatives or placing plants in areas that your puppy cannot access.

Furniture and Fixtures:

  • Tables and chairs: Pad the corners of furniture to protect your puppy from injuries. You can use furniture pads or corner guards.
  • Doors and windows: Ensure they are properly secured to prevent your puppy from escaping. Use child safety locks or door alarms to deter them.
  • Kitchen cabinets: Use child safety locks to prevent your puppy from accessing potentially harmful items, such as kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, or food.
  • Drawer pulls: Consider replacing drawer pulls with ones that are more difficult for puppies to chew on or remove.

Puppy-Proofing Flooring and Stairs:

  • Slippery floors: Use non-slip mats or rugs to prevent your puppy from slipping and falling. This is especially important on hardwood floors or tiles.
  • Stairs: Be cautious of stairs, as puppies may have difficulty navigating them. Consider using a baby gate to restrict access to areas with stairs.
  • Loose floorboards: Repair any loose floorboards to prevent your puppy from getting caught or injured.

Outdoor Safety:

  • Fencing: Ensure your yard is securely fenced to prevent your puppy from wandering off or encountering hazards. Check for any gaps or weak spots in the fence.
  • Poisons: Be aware of potential poisons in your garden, such as fertilizers, pesticides, and certain plants. Choose pet-safe alternatives or restrict your puppy’s access to these areas.
  • Water sources: Provide fresh water for your puppy and ensure it is clean and accessible. Avoid stagnant water sources that could contain harmful bacteria.
  • Outdoor hazards: Remove any potential hazards from your yard, such as sharp objects, broken glass, or chemicals.

Additional Tips:

  • Puppy-proof gates: Use baby gates to restrict your puppy’s access to certain areas of your home, such as the kitchen or laundry room.
  • Chew toys: Provide your puppy with plenty of appropriate chew toys to keep them entertained and prevent destructive chewing. Rotate their toys regularly to keep them interested.
  • Supervision: Always supervise your puppy, especially when they are exploring new areas or interacting with other pets or people.
  • Training: Start training your puppy early to teach them good behavior and prevent unwanted behaviors, such as chewing or jumping.
  • Socialization: Expose your puppy to a variety of people, dogs, and environments to help them become well-adjusted and confident.

By taking these steps, you can create a safe and enjoyable environment for your new furry friend. Remember, puppy-proofing is an ongoing process, so continue to assess your home and make adjustments as needed.

‘Mommy Club: Sugar and Spice’ – Q&A with Davina Knowles https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/mommy-club-sugar-and-spice-davina-knowles/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 11:54:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165341 Davina Knowles answered some questions surrounding new reality series The Mommy Club: Sugar and Spice.

‘THE MOMMY CLUB: SUGAR AND SPICE’

Showmax’s The Mommy Club: Sugar and Spice stars nine affluent Indian mothers from Durban, and their colourful extended families who assist them in running their empires and raising their heirs.

So, who are the mommies?

  • Abigail Nepaul (41)
  • Asharia Parsad (27)
  • Christina Devraj (26)
  • Davina Knowles (43)
  • Kim Jones (33)
  • Lenore Goss-Matjie (45)
  • Neetasha Singh Bugwandin (36)
  • Twins Losh and Resh Naidoo (45)

Take a look at the moms here. Davina teased a little more about the show, which is on the third episode so far, in a Q&A session.

Q&A WITH DAVINA

Which of the ladies do you gravitate towards the most?

Truth is, I gravitated towards Lenore and Abigail. Lenore because we actually both grew up in the same area as children, and our memories drew us to one another. We also have the same sense of humour and a sturdy moral compass. We immediately clicked and I felt like we knew each other our whole lives within a few days.

Abi and I have kids around the same age and we also have similar parenting styles and she is an academic so I gravitated towards her because we have the same interests and our days are eerily similar. Also, she enjoys having a laugh and is so reasonable and level-headed. I can relate to Abi so I loved being in her company.

How was your first day filming?

It was daunting, I didn’t know what to expect and I was insanely nervous. My kids were with me and were excited little Energizer bunnies. So mom-mode was on in full swing so I honestly just went with the flow like a robot, i took instructions and tried to ignore the cameras and be natural, but I struggled that first day.

Seeing, meeting and talking to the other moms was lovely but also I felt I didn’t fit in, so that made me feel awkward the entire first shoot. I was stressed because I still had my business to run, work to do, and I had to get home and prepare dinner and sort out homework. That first shoot taught me a lot about the ins and outs of filming a single scene.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES

Which of the ladies are different on- and off-camera and how are they different?

Honestly every lady on the show is genuinely themselves on camera. As you see them on the screen is how they are off camera.

What’s the biggest lesson you learned about yourself while filming?

I was very ill throughout filming, so I learnt that I can persevere and do what needs to done no matter how impossible it may seem. Filming was not easy because our real lives continued as normal with this additional aspect.

I learned that I can jump over every hurdle and juggle all the daily tasks thrown at me if I just put my mind to it. I learned never to give up no matter how uncomfortable a situation may be and to enjoy every moment of an unbelievable opportunity.

How do people treat you now that you’re on a TV show?

The weirdest thing is that people recognise me and are excited to see me and treat me like someone whose achievements are recognised. Some people just stare at me like they are trying to place where they know me from, this is hilarious and when they realise who I am a few people come up and say the nicest things and bombard me with questions about the show. Some people give me a commentary about the show like they need me to hear what they think about it.

This comes after Lenore Goss-Matjie also answered some burning questions. She also addressed racial comments on the show.

‘I think it’s safe to say I’m not going back’: Chidimma Adetshina on returning to SA https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/chidimma-adetshina-rules-out-returning-to-sa/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 10:03:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165529 Chidimma Adetshina is undoubtedly enjoying her stay in Nigeria after withdrawing from Miss SA, and she’s not looking forward to returning to South Africa soon.

During one of her interviews ahead of the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant finale, Chidimma Adetshina expressed her joy about her stay in Nigeria – her father’s native land.

CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA

During her interview with Cool FM Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina jokingly said, “I think it’s safe to say I’m not going back.”

The 23-year-old added, “It’s been amazing. I’m not even looking forward to going back [to South Africa]. I just want to explore more. I want to stay longer and see what happens next.”

Earlier this year, Chidimma Adetshina hogged headlines when South Africans questioned her eligibility to contest for the Miss South Africa crown after she revealed that she was born to a South African mother (Zulu) of Mozambican descent and a Nigerian father.

MISS SA WITHDRAWAL

Many politicians and celebrities questioned her eligibility based on her parent’s ethnicity, and the matter became a national debate.

The debate saw a formal complaint being lodged to the Home Affairs department to investigate and give clarity on her case.

However, the department found prima facie evidence to believe that Adetshina’s mother, a Mozambican, “may have committed fraud” in 2001.

Against the investigation, she withdrew from Miss SA, citing safety concerns.

Chidimma Adetshina posted, “After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I.

“With the full support of the Miss South Africa Organisation, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.”

HOPES TO PROMOTE INCLUSION AND ACCEPTANCE

However, after withdrawing from Miss SA, Chidimma Adetshina was invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria.

She has since been poised for the Miss Universe Nigeria crown, which will be held on 31 August at the Eko Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking to the media, running for Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina wants to advocate for inclusivity and acceptance.

Chidimma Adetshina said, “As a woman who has faced adversity, I want to use my voice and story alongside the Miss Universe Nigeria platform to promote inclusion and acceptance.

“I also want to educate people on the power of diversity to build a stronger community that benefits everyone.”

Rassie responds to ‘mind games’ against All Blacks [video] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/springboks-vs-all-blacks-rassie-erasmus-twitter-x-folllowing-latest/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 09:47:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165575 Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has responded to rumours he is “playing mind games” with the All Blacks on his X (former Twitter) account.

This comes amid him following the official account of the New Zealand team, who will play South Africa this weekend at Ellis Park.

The Boks will face their biggest rugby rivals in two home-ground matches on 31 August and 7 September.

RASSIE RESPONDS TO ‘MIND GAMES’ AGAINST ALL BLACKS

Over the weekend, Rassie Erasmus pulled his signature social media move by following the Springboks’ next opponents, the All Blacks. He also changed his header to a picture of the Web Ellis Trophy with the dates of the last two winning countries, South Africa and New Zealand.

Speaking at a media conference this week, Rassie responded to allegations that he is “trolling” the All Blacks on his social media account.

“No, it’s just interesting to me. It’s not mind games. Guys tweet stuff about their teams, and you see it and might learn something there. It is like getting the newspaper.

Rassie admitted that he made the move to “spy” on the team.

He added, “You look there and try to see what you can see. It’s really just nice to know what they are up to when they arrive.”

‘STUPID IF WE DON’T RESPECT THEM’

Rassie Erasmus added that he would go into this weekend’s match with awareness and respect for the Springboks’ opponent.

He said: “We’ll be stupid if we don’t respect them. We’ll be bad coaches, we’ll be stupid players, we’ll be an arrogant nation, and we’ll be put back in our place at number six or seven where we started.

Rassie added: “It’s a team that beat England at home. It’s a team that lost to Argentina. We’ve lost to Argentina. It’s a team we beat by one point in the World Cup.

“We’ve played the last ten times against them; one draw, four losses, and five wins for us.”

The 25-year-old adds that she also suffered online harassment because she’s a plus-sized model.

Ignoring the critics, Dania says she saw the beauty pageant as a means of “empowerment” for women to “show their talents, their beauty, their intellect and their professional life”.

South Africans revealed on X this week that they are rooting for her to win the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.

@nelly_weideman said: “Since we are all about changing stereotypes! Miss Kwara for Miss Universe Nigeria! We made history with our first ever deaf Miss SA, let’s make history for Nigeria too. Let’s vote for Miss Kwara.”

@Patriotic_Tee, said: “Love it for her. It’s a pity the Miss World/Universe’s standard of beauty is skinny ladies. But as a chubby hun [girl] myself, I love this chikka’s [girl’s] confidence and the fact that she pushed through the barriers to get to this point.“

In recent weeks and test matches, the public has witnessed breathtaking renditions of the anthem performed by singers Bobby van Jaarsveld,  KB Motsilanyane, Ntokozo Mbambo, and Jody Williams.

MZANSI YOUTH CHOIR TO SING NATIONAL ANTHEM AT SPRINGBOKS VS ALL BLACKS GAME

This week, SA Rugby confirmed that the Mzansi Youth Choir had been tasked with performing the national anthem at the highly-anticipated Springboks vs All Blacks game.

It’s not the first time the group of vibrant singers have performed Nkosi Sikeli’ iAfrika. In 2021, the group performed alongside Lira when the Boks played the British and Irish Lions in Cape Town’s DHL Stadium.

They shared in a Facebook post at the time: “The stadium may have been empty, but our hearts were full. What a special moment performing the anthem”.

In the comments section, South Africans were moved by the touching performance, which occurred during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Hands down the best rendition of our anthem.”

“It made me cry.”

“Made me proud to be South African.”

“Loved the drum beat and the fact that it made you want to dance! Even some of the rugby players were swaying to the rhythm”.

The stadium may have been empty, but our hearts were full. What a special moment performing the anthem with #Lira before the Springboks victory in the series decider. 🇿🇦🙌🏾❤️ #CastleLionsSeries #BoksvsLions

According to their website, the Mzansi Youth Choir was formed by Jannie and Marina Zaaiman in 2003 to keep youth off the streets and help them focus their energy on creating art.

It adds that over the past two decades, more than 600 young people between the ages of 14 and 24 have been members of the choir, which is known for combining traditional South African music with gospel and pop music.

MORE TEAR-JERKING PERFORMANCES

Over the years, the Mzansi Youth Choir has inspired and memorable performances on local and international stages.

Last year, the choir had America’s Got Talent [AGT] judges and viewers in tears when they performed a cover of Nightbirde’s original song; It’s Okay. Nightbirde, real name Jane Marczewski, was a previous contestant of AGT and died of cancer during her season of the talent show.

NEW PHOTOS OF FAF DE KLERK’S BABY GIRL

Faf de Klerk and his wife Mine welcomed their first child together, a baby girl named Remi-Ré de Klerk on 27 February at Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein. Mine has since shared new photos of Remi-Ré on Instagram, calling her a gem and expressing love for her baby. Take a look…

“Love you baby Rem❤️. You are a Gem,” she wrote.

Faf proposed to Mine in May 2022, and the pair tied the knot at the La Paris Estate in Franschhoek in October 2022. The pair met through mutual friends in Hermanus in December 2015. Mine later invited Faf to a friend’s wedding. The pair’s relationship faced the challenge of long distance as Faf moved to Manchester in 2017 while Mine was working at her father’s pharmacy in Postmasburg, Northern Cape.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, the distance became too much for the pair. They then decided to just be friends. However, the pair found their way back together in 2021.

Read more about the pair’s full relationship timeline here.

THE 2024 SPRINGBOK BABIES

  • In January, Eben Etzebeth and his wife Anlia welcomed their first child in KwaZulu-Natal.

OPINION: Should South Africans relinquish support to All Blacks? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/opinion/springboks-new-zealand-south-africans-who-support-all-blacks/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 20:12:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165101 If you’re a person of colour (POC) from a South African rugby-fanatic family, you’ll no doubt know relatives who have chosen to support New Zealand’s All Blacks over the country’s national squad, the Springboks.

You’ll also understand why a country on the other side of the world has a deep-rooted history and connection with its biggest rivals.

But is it time for those die-hard supporters to finally give the boys in green and gold their full support?

WHY DO MANY SOUTH AFRICANS SUPPORT THE ALL BLACKS?

In theory, it makes little sense for a country’s citizens to support another in the very same sport. Unless we’re talking about South Africa’s soccer team, Bafana Bafana. But that’s a topic for another day.

For many who don’t know, it has much to do with our country’s dark history and how POC, both in SA and New Zealand, shared a “trauma bond” over racial discrimination.

All Blacks Springboks

In SA, under the Apartheid regime and before the policy of racial transformation was even an idea, non-white rugby players were banned from playing in the national rugby squad, known as the Springboks.

Coloured and black players had their own federations, which were ultimately dictated to by the South African Rugby Board [SARB] and reserved for white players. Even though the South African Rugby Union [SARU] was a non-racial entity, it was also subjected to demands by SARB.

From the inception of Apartheid in 1948  until the 70s, SARB forbade New Zealand natives – known as Māoris – in the All Blacks, from visiting or playing against SA. According to reports, this demand was supported or, at the very least, accepted by New Zealand authorities, including the New Zealand Rugby Union [NZRU].

The racial tensions saw an explosive turn of events in the late 60s when the New Zealand protest group Halt All Racist Tours proposed the boycott of games and tours in South Africa.

During this period, many POC in SA stood in alignment with New Zealand’s All Blacks. Many outspoken Māori players also criticised the Apartheid government as well as their own, who inadvertently enforced a racial divide.

A sporting boycott later saw South Africa omitted from the first two Rugby World Cups, in 1987 and 1991.

Fast forward to 2010, and the South African government – via Sports Minister Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile – would offer an official apology for the actions of the Apartheid government.

In a letter to New Zealand media, Stofile said: “I do believe that both the NZRU and SARU should apologise for the folly of those who came before them.

We cannot be expected to simply forget where we come from and the pain it caused many people.”

SUPPORTING THE SPRINGBOKS IN DAWN OF DEMOCRACY

Following the inception of democracy in 1994, the first black president, Nelson Mandela, urged South Africans to mend racial divides and support the Springboks. The move would see him being criticised by militant groups for trying to promote a “fake unity.”

Nevertheless, Mandela would tell the public of the Boks: “The country is fully behind them. I have never been so proud of our boys as I am now. I hope that that pride we all share.”

A year later, SA – who were once shunned by the world over Apartheid atrocities – not only hosted the Rugby World Cup but won it too.

Iconic images of the late proud president – donning green and gold –  lifting the Webb Ellis trophy alongside Springbok captain Francois Pienaar made headlines around the world. The historical scenes were credited as the moment South Africans of all races formed a bond through sport and support for, ultimately, the Springboks.

The 1995 World Cup final game, coincidentally between the Springboks and All Blacks,  took place at Ellis Park – where the countries will face off again this weekend in a Rugby Championship match.

“It was the first World Cup in which South Africa was involved.

“We were the host country, we won, and it unified the nation,” the late Chester Williams, then the only POC in the Springboks, told World Rugby in 2013.

He added: “Everyone was so happy. White, black, everyone. That day, we all became legends, and after the match, things were so much better in the country.”

IS IT TIME TO MOVE ON?

Despite the Springboks winning four World Cup titles, appointing its first black captain, Siya Kolisi, and players’ emphasis that they are “playing for South Africa,” there are still many who would rather show love to the All Blacks.

Some, like muso Prince Kaybee and podcaster Penuel Mlotshwa, insist they enjoy New Zealand’s rugby style. Others are more bold in their support, with multiple fan groups insisting that their “blood is black.”

Some even claim that the Springboks will remain a reminder of Apartheid’s painful past.

Facebook user Nicole de Oliviera posted: “As a person of colour and South African, as a fighter for equality, I will never support the Springboks. To this day, it is governed by extreme racial prejudices, with a few token players.”

She added: “South African rugby is a monument of Apartheid racism and segregation. The people of colour that watch it are slaves with a poor memory.”

Which begs the question: Should sports fans have the freedom of choice on who they wish to support? Or does being a South African make you a Springbok supporter by default?

And what about those who reject the Springboks based on what happened decades ago, by people who have long since died?

The empathetic truth – from my perspective as a POC – is that you cannot tell anyone how to feel. Especially if they have endured pain and trauma at the hands of their oppressors in their past. Their feelings are valid.

Let them support who they want, in this case, the All Blacks. For those who have strong opinions, perhaps their pain needs to be acknowledged.

Ultimately, I believe that their hurt will heal and their faith in South Africa will be restored.

DO YOU SUPPORT THE ALL BLACKS, AND IF SO, WHY?

Do I need to vaccinate my dog? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/do-i-need-to-vaccinate-my-dog/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 18:28:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165191 Vaccines are a crucial tool in preventing infectious diseases in dogs. They work by exposing your dog to a weakened or inactive form of a disease, stimulating their immune system to produce antibodies that fight off the real thing. This protection can last for several years but may require booster vaccinations to maintain.

The Benefits of Vaccination

  • Disease prevention: Vaccines can prevent serious and sometimes fatal diseases, such as distemper, parvovirus, and rabies.
  • Reduced veterinary costs: Preventing diseases can save you money on treatment costs and potential emergency care.
  • Protecting the community: Vaccinating your dog helps to protect other pets and even humans from contagious diseases.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Vaccines

  • Your dog’s lifestyle: Dogs that are frequently around other animals or travel may require additional vaccinations.
  • Local disease prevalence: The prevalence of certain diseases in your area can influence the recommended vaccination schedule.
  • Your dog’s health: If your dog has underlying health conditions, your veterinarian may recommend specific vaccinations or adjustments to the schedule.

Common Vaccination Concerns

  • Side effects: While it’s possible for dogs to experience mild side effects after vaccination, such as lethargy or soreness, severe reactions are rare.
  • Allergic reactions: If your dog has a history of allergies, your veterinarian can assess the risk of allergic reactions to vaccines.
  • Vaccine safety: Vaccines undergo rigorous testing and are generally considered safe for dogs. However, it’s essential to discuss any concerns with your veterinarian.

Tips for Vaccination Success

  • Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations: Adhere to the recommended vaccination schedule for your dog’s age, breed, and lifestyle.
  • Keep up with booster shots: Regular booster vaccinations are essential to maintain protection against diseases.
  • Monitor your dog for side effects: If your dog experiences any unusual symptoms after vaccination, contact your veterinarian.
  • Choose a reputable veterinarian: A qualified veterinarian can provide expert advice and ensure your dog receives the appropriate vaccinations.

Vaccinating your dog is a vital aspect of responsible pet ownership. By protecting your dog from infectious diseases, you can help them live a long, healthy, and happy life. Always consult with your veterinarian to determine the best vaccination schedule for your individual dog’s needs.

How often do you vaccinate your dog?

PICTURES: Former Orlando Pirates midfielder building a double-storey house https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/pictures-former-orlando-pirates-midfielder-building-a-double-storey-house/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 16:54:50 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165154 Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates star Thandani Ntshumayelo is making headlines after he shared photos of a double-storey house he is reportedly building.

Thanks to his huge social media following, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder often trends whenever he posts.

FORMER ORLANDO PIRATES MIDFIELDER BUILDING A DOUBLE-STOREY HOUSE

Undoubtedly, the photos have gained thousands of comments and reactions since dropping online. The now-viral photos were first shared on his Instagram before they made rounds online.

Mzansi Soccer Stars also confirmed the news as they reposted the now-viral photos. Against the trends, Thandani Ntshumayelo has yet to confirm whether the double-storey is his or not openly.

It’s unclear where the 34-year-old is building his house, which seems to be in a remote location. Little is known about the house’s number of rooms.

Judging from the photos, Thandani Ntshumayelo’s double-storey house boasts modern architectural designs.

Mzansi was convinced that the former Orlando Pirates star would soon complete his house.

Thandani Ntshumayelo joins a host of former Premier League stars, including Teenage Hadebe, who recently made headlines with their lush properties.

Earlier this year, former Kaizer Chiefs star Teenage Hadebe showed off his mega-mansion in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

However, in June, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi made headlines after he revealed that he was building a lush rural mansion in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal.

CAREER

Thandani Ntshumayelo started his youth career with Black Swallows before joining SuperSport United in 2005.

However, in 2009, he was promoted to the senior team. In 2012, the midfielder joined Orlando Pirates and made over 70 appearances.

In January 2016, Thandani Ntshumayelo was handed a four-year ban from football after he tested positive for a banned substance.

He returned to football in 2019, but it was never the same, and the star made it known that it was one of the reasons why he had to retire early.

In 2023, Thandani Ntshumayelo retired from football. During one of his interviews, the star said, “I rushed going back [to football], that’s why maybe something didn’t go well.

“The money was no longer the same again. That’s why I took a decision to retire early.”

LIFE AFTER FOOTBALL

However, the star has since returned to school and is studying law.

The Siberian Husky and its striking blue eyes

The striking blue eyes of the Siberian Husky are a result of a genetic mutation that affects the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for eye color. In most dogs, melanin is produced in the iris, giving their eyes a brown hue. However, in Siberian Huskies with the blue-eye gene, melanin production is reduced or absent in the iris, allowing light to scatter and reflect off the underlying tissue, creating the distinctive blue color. This genetic trait has been selected for by breeders over time, as it adds to the breed’s unique and appealing appearance.

Lotto jackpot winner finally claims R100 million winnings https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/lotto-jackpot-winner-finally-claims-r100-million-winnings/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 13:58:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165079 The National Lottery Ithuba has confirmed that the R100 million Lotto jackpot winner has finally come forward to claim her winnings.

R100 MILLION LOTTO JACKPOT WINNER FINALLY CLAIMS WINNINGS

The confirmation comes barely a few weeks after the National Lottery Ithuba confirmed that no one had claimed the R100 million Lotto jackpot won on 3 August.

Speaking to the media, Ithuba CEO Chairman Mabuza said, “We are overjoyed to celebrate this monumental win with our latest jackpot winner, especially during Women’s Month.”

“The R100 million Lotto jackpot is a life-changing amount, and it is a testament to the excitement and opportunities that the South African National Lottery brings to participants across the country,” she added.

However, Ithuba has it that the winner decided to keep her identity under wraps despite being happy about winning the jackpot. She won the jackpot after 25 consecutive rollovers.

The winning ticket was purchased at Pick n’ Pay in Hazeldean Square in Pretoria.

The R100 million jackpot is the second largest Lotto jackpot won in South African history after the R110 million jackpot.

In 2018, four people won the largest jackpot in South Africa. Surprisingly, amongst the winners was a 19-year-old who had played the Lotto for the first time.

OTHER WINNERS

Earlier this month, Ithuba also revealed that a KwaZulu-Natal couple in their 60s had won the bagged the Powerball Plus jackpot.

National Lottery Ithuba confirmed that the couple won R16 million from the 2 August draw. The couple won through a quick pick selection worth R22.50.

Speaking to Ithuba, the couple said, “With this money, we will finally be able to join a medical aid scheme and receive convenient healthcare.”

A Limpopo fruit and vegetable retail shop assistant won the R16 million Lotto jackpot in May. She matched all six numbers correctly from the 4 May Lotto jackpot draw.

Confirmed reports from the National Lottery Ithumba state that the winning ticket was purchased using the Capitec banking application. Surprisingly, the winner opted for an R10 quick pick.

However, that same month, a security manager from Limpopo won the R13 million Powerball jackpot. The winning R60 wager ticket was bought from Shoprite Checkers in Limpopo.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T CLAIM YOUR LOTTO JACKPOT WINNINGS?

However, it has since been confirmed that the winning ticket is valid for 365 days from the draw date. According to Ithuba, it will expire if not claimed within that period.

However, all unclaimed winnings are transferred to a National Lotteries Participants Trust Fund (NLPTF) for “safe keeping” until claimed by the respective winner.

If not claimed within 365 days, the funds are shared among good causes and beneficiary organisations.

Mariah Carey loses her mother and sister on the same day https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/mariah-carey-loses-her-mother-and-sister-on-same-day/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 12:51:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165041 A double tragedy has struck Mariah Carey. The music icon recently confirmed that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, died on the same day.

MARIAH CAREY’S TRAGIC LOSS

The singer, renowned for her vocal prowess and larger-than-life persona, has now faced one of the most harrowing experiences of her life.

“My heart is broken,” Mariah shared in an exclusive statement to People.

“I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” For Mariah, 55, the pain is acute and deeply personal.

MARIAH CAREY AND HER MOM

Despite her fame and fortune, she must now confront a profound loss that no amount of success can soothe.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she added.

“I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah’s relationship with her mother, Patricia, was far from simple, according to BBC.

MARIAH CAREY’S UPBRINGING

Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was a significant influence on Mariah’s musical talents.

Yet, their bond was marked by complexities. Mariah opened up about this in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, according to Sky News.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities,” she wrote.

“It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.” Despite the ups and downs, Mariah maintained a relationship with Patricia.

MARIAH CAREY’S BOND

In 2010, they even performed together during ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special.

They delivered a touching mother-daughter duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.”

Mariah dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could.

I will love you the best I can, always.”

A HEAVY BURDEN

Mariah’s bond with her sister Alison was equally complicated.

Alison, who had faced her own share of struggles over the years, had a strained relationship with Mariah Carey .

In her memoir, Mariah admitted that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison or their brother, Morgan.

Despite the challenges, this double loss is undoubtedly a heavy burden for Mariah.

SUPPORT AND CONDOLENCES

They have not disclosed the exact causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths.

This has left many to speculate about the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking day.

Mariah Carey’s fans have rallied around her, flooding social media with messages of support and condolences.

Her fans, known for their unwavering loyalty, are now offering the singer a shoulder to lean on during this time of mourning.

UNIMAGINABLE GRIEF

As Mariah navigates through this unimaginable grief, she has asked for privacy.

For someone who has shared so much of her life with the public, this request is more than understandable.

Mariah Carey has always been a figure of resilience and strength. Now, more than ever, she will need to draw on those inner reserves to cope with this profound loss.

DIFFICULT JOURNEY OF HEALING

This tragic event starkly reminds us that even the most glamorous lives can be touched by sorrow.

Mariah Carey, who has given so much joy to the world through her music, now faces a period of deep personal sorrow.

Her fans, friends, and family will undoubtedly be there for her, but it’s clear that this will be a long and difficult journey of healing.
