The maintenance is scheduled for Thursday, 29 August, from 9:00 – 18:00.
The power utility said there will be electricity supply disruption in Pimville, Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network.
“The power outage will affect customers in Klipspruit, Pimvillle Zones 4, 5 and 6 on Thursday, 29 August from 9:00 – 18:00. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” the power utility said.
In the interest of safety, Eskom said customers should treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power outage.
“Eskom apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by this maintenance. Should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated,” the power utility added.
In addition, Eskom said should circumstances beyond its control, the planned power outage in Tshwane may not proceed as communicated.
Meanwhile, prepaid electricity meter tampering and illegal connections are on the rise.
Last week, the City of Cape Town revealed that as many as 12 000 meters had been tampered with. Mostly in low-income areas like Lavender Hill, which has been protesting high energy costs.
“The city has observed a notable increase in prepaid electricity meter tampering cases. It is our view this is driven by unaffordable and unconscionable electricity tariff hikes proposed by Eskom and approved by NERSA,” Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg said.

]]>Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, speaking this week at the Presidential Imbizo, has revealed he’s working on an online e-register for indigent benefits in South Africa. The Citizen reports that the province wants to lead the country in using technology to improve free government services.
At the gathering of government and community members on the East Rand, Premier Lesufi said: “Soon we’ll launch an e-register for indigent benefits in South Africa. The planned online portal will link up all databases of government so free benefits due to our people can be accessed.”
Moreover, the premier explains he’s met with all the mayors in Gauteng to reach an agreement on the electronic register. The goal is to enable the poor to receive free government services but also identify those who are working and earning income and therefore trying to take advantage of system.
“We are ready now to launch the e-register for indigent benefits in South Africa. Currently, despite being unemployed, there are many who can’t get free government benefits because they are not properly registered,” explained Lesufi. He gave no indication as to the timeline of the e-register and its parameters to qualify. Generally, the rule of thumb is if you receive a means-tested South African Social Security Agency, you’ll likely be eligible for free government services, too.
In the Western Cape, for example, indigent benefits look like so:
Besides updating the management of indigent benefits in South Africa, Premier Lesufi also promised free Wi-Fi in the townships. He also says the biggest challenge in the province is high youth unemployment. To that end, many major infrastructure projects in the province are expected to created thousands of jobs very soon.

]]>Despite media outlets calling it the Afrikaner-only township of Kleinfontein, with “various types of housing, including shacks, RDP and wooden houses,” if you visit the Friends of Kleinfontein page on Facebook, it portrays a far more serene settlement. There are images of old-style Apatheid flags, wildlife and pretty sunsets. And men and women working for the betterment of their community – building roads, fixing plumbing and building important infrastructure.
However, the Afrikaner-only township of Kleinfontein is now in the crosshairs of the City of Tshwane. The High Court in Pretoria was recently asked to step in and enforce bylaws after the Afrikaner-only township of Kleinfontein was declared illegal, reports The Citizen. But the residents have defended themselves saying their land is zoned for agricultural use and the enclave is not illegal.
Director and shareholder of the settlement Dannie de Beer argues they’ve received nothing from the City of Tshwane, nor do they want anything. Thus its exact intention to be recognised as a separate homeland. He explained the land was bought before the City of Tshwane came into existence.
Little is known about how culturally independent life behind its walls works. But a window into the secretive Afrikaner-only township of Kleinfontein can be found through its Facebook page. At the entrance are statues of former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd and former President Paul Kruger. Residents are reported to be living in various types of housing, including shacks, RDP-equivalent houses, wooden houses and townhouses. The settlement has its own electricity, water and municipality.
Moreover, Kleinfontein boasts rugby fields, tennis courts, a large solar energy plant and independent wastewater system and water supply. Images on social media show plentiful wildlife, a fishing dam, picnic area and a community hall. Residents enjoy communal potjies together and regular visits from the ice-cream van. But how does it run and what does the City of Tshwane want to do with it?
“First Kleinfontein was a closed corporation. Then a company, then a corporation, and now it’s a share block scheme, like Orania. The company owns all the land and assigns portions to community members,” noted de Beer. Despite millions spent in legal fees to resolve the dispute, government keeps going after them.
De Beer says problems for the Afrikaner-only township of Kleinfontein started when disgruntled former residents started inciting people not to pay their levies. A case was brought forward, and the city was ordered to apply bylaws, which questioned the validity of the Kleinfontein’s township status.
Meanwhile Obakeng Ramabodu of the EFF has said: “The city must act without delay to enforce all planning and building regulations. This includes ensuring the land is properly rezoned and subdivided and that building plans are in accordance with legal requirements.”

]]>Mboro appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court alongside his bodyguard and son, Vincent Baloyi and Revival Motsoeneng, respectively on Friday, 16 August. The three were arrested last Tuesday after brandishing dangerous weapons, including a panga, at Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong on 5 August.
Mboro was widely criticised after videos of the incident were widely circulated on social media. His church Incredible Happenings Ministry in Katlehong was also burnt down by community members.
The conflict between Mboro and his grandchildren’s family is over the custody of the boy learners who are enrolled at Matsediso Primary School, in Grade R and Grade 2.
The dispute reportedly started after the mother of the children reportedly passed away in April this year.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonondwane, said Mboro and his co-accused face a string of charges, including kidnapping, possession of dangerous weapons and unlicensed firearms, possession of a prohibited firearm, assault by way of threat, pointing of firearms, discharging of a gun and malicious property damage.
The matter was initially postponed for the state to prepare for the bail hearing and finalise investigations related to that hearing, including, amongst other things, the profiling of the accused and other information relevant to bail.
On Friday, there were delays in the court proceedings after it was established that the police had not verified Mboro and his co-accused’s home addresses for bail application purposes, Zimoja reported.
The matter was postponed again to Monday, 19 August for police to verify the addresses of the accused.

]]>Following lengthy postponements, the Manzini Magistrates Court in Eswatini accepted South Africa’s extradition application and handed down the judgement on Friday, 16 August.
As previously reported, in March, the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Shamila Batohi signed the necessary documentation to start the extradition process of the two suspects.
The two men are allegedly linked to the murders of Forbes and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane who were gunned down on 10 February 2023 on Florida Road in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. They were arrested in Mbabane, Eswatini for separate matters.
Following their arrest, reports surfaced that the two suspects moved to Mbabane in November 2023.
Their previous residences are unknown to the public. A viral video of their hideout also made rounds on the internet. Their hideout wasn’t fancy, but it quickly became known for hosting ‘parties.’
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, a neighbour said several unknown people visited the two suspects’ hideout during the festive season.
In another interview with Newzroom Afrika, a relative of the suspects insisted that they are innocent and that they fled to Eswatini because of an ongoing taxi war.
The relative said that the arrests may have saved the two men from the wrath of South African police who have allegedly shot and killed some of their family members.
“We’ve lost family members at the hands of the police. It is better that they were arrested outside of South Africa, rather than them being killed by the police,” said the unidentified man.
Further, he said that the men went into hiding four months before Forbes and Motsoane were killed. However, they did not confirm or deny their children’s involvement in the murder of AKA.
Meanwhile, their five alleged accomplices – Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi (30), Lindelani Ndimade (30), Siyanda Myeza (21), Mziwethemba Gwabeni (36) and Lindokuhle Ndimande (29) — appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court earlier this month.
The matter was postponed to November 2024 for further investigations and pending the extradition of the two Ndimande brothers.
All the suspects are facing 10 charges, including two charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition among others.

]]>This includes the ability to deploy operationally by parachute into any rural and urban environment. Now, TimesLive reports that the first and only SAPS Special Task Force female officer has qualified. SAPS is keeping the 32-year old’s identity withheld for security purposes but still wishes to celebrate the trailblazing efforts of this elite officer.
Training for the STF entails a rigid 18-month programme, ensuring members are trained to a requisite level for high-risk incidents. Of the 525 members who applied, only 150 made it to pre-selection. From there, 110 entered the STF training programme. And a half later, a mere 11 officers completed the training and were welcomed into the STF ranks.
“Today we introduce the nation to the first SAPS Special Task Force female officer. She is the first in history of the organisation to successfully completed the elite Special Task Force programme without any amendments. Completing the intensive training programme is no small feat, as it is designed to test one’s physical and mental capabilities,” said Lt. Col. Amanda van Wyk last Friday (9 August 2024).
The SAPS Special Task Force female officer says she knew she was destined to serve the country when she studied to become a personal trainer while playing rugby. She’s a self-confessed fitness fanatic and adrenaline junkie but is currently working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She joined the service in 2012 and fondly refers to her fellow STF colleagues as ‘brothers’ now, thanks to their shared camaraderie during training.
“I wake up with a smile on my face, even when I get woken up in the early hours of the morning. My job excites me because the higher the risk, the higher the reward,” said the SAPS Special Task Force female officer. She also encourages all women to be their authentic selves and to never doubt their capability.

]]>The 54-year-old was sentenced to six years imprisonment, two of which were wholly suspended for five years on condition that he was not convicted of theft during the suspension period.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), before Kunene was appointed SIU Head, he was an attorney in a partnership practising under the name Kunene Masango Incorporated.
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) paid about R 226 000 directly into Kunene’s trust account in respect of the complainant’s claim. Before the RAF payment, the complainant had reached an agreement with Kunene that his fee would be covered by a 25% contingency based on the RAF payment.
NPA spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Natasha Kara said in the circumstances, the court convicted Kunene of the theft of R 170 000, which would have been the amount that the complainant would have been entitled to (after the 25% due to Kunene).
Kara said in 2009, Kunene’s partner at the practice, Masango, lodged the claim for loss of support with the RAF on behalf of the complainant after her fiancé had passed away in a motor vehicle accident.
“Due to Masango’s involvement in an unrelated theft of trust funds in 2010, he abandoned the practice and was struck off the roll of practicing attorneys by the High Court. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to a period of imprisonment.
“After that, the complainant dealt directly with Kunene regarding her RAF claim. Kunene continuously told her that the claim was still being processed during these interactions. Eventually, in March 2015, the complainant enquired directly with the RAF and was advised that the money was paid out to Kunene in August 2014. She confronted Kunene, who confessed to using the money due to financial difficulties. The complainant eventually reported Kunene to the Law Society, and the matter came to light. Following an investigation, Kunene handed himself over to the police,” Kara explained.
Kunene reportedly denied the allegations against him in court and shifted the blame to his former partner.
Kara said the State led the evidence of bank statements demonstrating the money moving into and out of Kunene’s bank account bill payments and school fees.
“There was also evidence from a bank official who testified that from 5 July 2012, Kunene was the sole signatory to both the practice’s trust account and the business account. The State further led the complainant’s evidence, who said that she trusted Kunene as he was an attorney. She said that she needed the money to care for her child following her fiancé’s death,” Kara explained.

]]>You must remember that the story over South Africa’s new licence plates has been playing out longer than Muvhango and Scandal soap opera. For more than a decade, the Department of Transport has been unable to get its house in order and actually implement South Africa’s new and safer licence plates.
Furthermore, Gauteng was supposed to be the first province to implement the upgraded plates in 2024, before the rest of the country would prompltly follow. It has since been announced by Gauteng Premier Lesufi that prototypes of the new number plates will first be stress-tested on its government fleet, pushing the rollout date out to 2025.
The decade-old proposed plates show the same alphanumeric combination as the current identifiers – AB 12 CD GP. TopAuto reported that these are not expected to change until combinations are exhausted somewhere around 2038. Crucially, however, the tweaked design incorporates an all-important QR code. This piece of tech will, allegedly, be able to stop the cloning and counterfeiting of licence plates by criminals.
A big reason for South Africa’s new licence plates is QR code integration with the National Traffic Information System (NATIS). The system has cost government billions in development and hopes to be able to keep tabs on all registered road users at all times through the new high-tech plates. As reported by The South African earlier this year, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said every Gauteng resident who renews their vehicle licence would be obliged to get the new licence plate, too.
This was met with derision by Gauteng residents, who believe South Africa’s new licence plates are simply another money-making scheme. And they’ll have no practical impact on cloning or criminal behavior. New plates currently cost R200 to purchase. However, the new Gauteng number plates are anticipated to cost nearly double that at R360.

]]>Images of Mboro’s Incredible Happenings Ministries church tent engulfed by smoke and fire were shown on various news channels, hours after he was reportedly arrested on Tuesday morning.
Earlier on Tuesday, four people – one of them believed to be Mboro – were arrested after a violent altercation occurred at Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong on Monday, as confirmed by the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.
As the flames continued, community members expressed frustration with Mboro and alleged past inaction by police where the self-proclaimed prophet is concerned.
One community member – without evidence – referred to Incredible Happenings Ministries as a “cult” where molestation and rapes occur.
However, other another community member disagreed, saying Mboro was a valued member of Katlehong, providing houses and food to the community.
In the video circulating on social media, Mboro – brandishing two pangas – can be seen along with a panga-wielding man and another – holding an assault rifle – threatening staff members at the school and forcefully grabbing two Grade R and Grade 2 children.
This incident was reportedly sparked by a custody issue for the two children, whose mother passed away in April 2024. And eNCA has reported that the two children are Mboro’s grandchildren.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said on Monday, the father of the children had a meeting with the principal in the morning. On the same day, the maternal grandmother – who is the alleged guardian of the children – also met with the principal to report and inform him about a conflict that occurred during a meeting held recently at Pastor Mboro’s house.
“Following this, the deputy principal and some staff members refused to release the children without the grandmother’s permission. This led to the pastor arriving at the school with bodyguards and weapons,” said Mabona.
Mabona said the school staff and children would be provided with psychosocial support by the department.
Mboro is no stranger to controversy.
In 2017, the pastor was arrested and charged, after he allegedly assaulted a paramedic who was tending to a sick child inside his Incredible Happenings Ministries church.
The child later died and it is alleged Mboro assaulted the woman paramedic after blaming her for not responding to the emergency call quickly to save the child, according to SABC News.
Mboro, in turn, laid charges of culpable homicide against the paramedics and said they had killed an innocent child.

]]>The incident happened on Monday, 5 August and videos are circulating on social media platforms.
In the videos, Mboro can be seen wielding pangas and threatening to attack teachers on the school premises. Disturbingly, another man is seen grabbing two learners, who were caught in the fracas of this ordeal, while another is seen wielding an assault rifle.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, a conflict between two families over the custody of the boy learners who are enrolled at Matsediso Primary School, in Grade R and Grade 2, has been escalating. The mother of the children reportedly passed away in April this year, leading to a dispute between the paternal and maternal sides of the family.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said on Monday, the father of the children had a meeting with the principal in the morning. On the same day, the maternal grandmother, who is the alleged guardian of the children, also met with the principal to report and inform him about a conflict that occurred during a meeting held recently at Pastor Mboro’s house who is the paternal grandfather.
“Following this, the Deputy Principal and some staff members refused to release the children without the grandmother’s permission. This led to the pastor arriving at the school with bodyguards and weapons.
“The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon after school when the father of the children came to fetch them, accompanied by two men, one of them being the pastor – who was armed with two pangas while the other carried an assault rifle. Teachers, acting on the alleged instructions from the grandmother, tried to prevent the father from leaving the school premises with the children. In response, the pastor brandished a panga threateningly at the teachers, allowing the father to leave with the children,” Mabona explained.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane condemned the incident saying such appalling behaviour has no place in schools and society.
Chiloane said the safety and well-being of learners and educators are of utmost priority.
“Such acts of violence and intimidation not only undermine the foundation of our education system, but also have the potential to traumatise the entire school community, particularly given that this incident occurred in a primary school in full view of young children and their teachers.
“The department is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this matter. We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation and will take all necessary measures to protect our learners and educators,” he said.

]]>The matter was postponed last Monday as the state indicated it intends to recall retired cellphone data analyst Lambertus Steyn to clear certain aspects of his testimony.
In his testimony, Steyn told the court that accused 5 Fisokuhle Ntuli was in contact with singer and Meyiwa’s then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo twice before the goalie was murdered.
Meyiwa was shot at Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014.
During cross-examination by advocate Charles Mnisi, Vodacom forensic supervisor Vythilingham told the court that Ntuli did not call Khumalo.
Steyn previously testified that Ntuli called Khumalo twice before Meyiwa was killed. He said Ntuli called Khumalo on 2 August 2014 and 15 October 2014. The first call was for close to two minutes, and the other was one and a half minutes. He also testified that cellphone records revealed that Khumalo was in contact with accused 1 Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya.
Vythilingham said first number does not belong to Ntuli and the second number belonged to Senzo Meyiwa.
Five men are on trial for the murder of Senzo Meyiwa. Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All five men pleaded not guilty.

]]>According to TimesLive, the province has prototyped a new licence plate recognition system to go with the new 2024 Gauteng licence plates. Now that the recognition hard- and software is in place, the Gauteng government’s vehicle fleet will be piloting the new plates first, confirmed Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.
According to reports back in 2023, it was understood the Gauteng licence plates with anti-cloning tech would then be rolled out across the country soon after. Diale-Tlabela explained that the pilot project is expected to last six months, taking us to February 2025. However, it’s not just 2024 Gauteng licence plates that will be stress-tested. The project encompasses a new cloud-based portal, too. With integration of fleet management vehicle data to the National Traffic Information System. The pilot will check for comprehensive system functionality before further rollout.
As previously reported by The South African, an overhaul of the provincial vehicle licensing regime was set kickoff on 1 April 2024. This takes the form of a non-tamper-proof licence plate featuring a one-of-a-kind QR code. Premier Panyaza Lesufi believes such a move will help preventing hijackings, theft and crimes committed with stolen vehicles. More than 80% of major crimes in Gauteng are committed with stolen/hijacked vehicles or cars using falsified number plates.
Upon the satisfactory completion of the trial run, the provincial department will roll out the new vehicle plates to the province. The only catch appears to be motorists will have to reregister their cars for the privilege, reports TopAuto. Current plate pricing in Gauteng of R160 is expected to increase to R320 for the new high-tech plate. “Wide-ranging consultations with all stakeholders are underway to ensure the rollout is implemented in a just and fair manner. Also, to ensure seamless implementation, manufacturers and retailers involved in the number plate value chain are required to register with the Department to comply with existing regulations,” said Diale-Tlabela.
Thus far, the province has said the 2024 Gauteng licence plates mean it can account for every vehicle registered. The new alphanumeric combination has not been revealed. However, it’s believe the current format (AA 11 AA GP) will not need to change because the combinations will last until 2038.

]]>The incident happened on Friday while the wardens were training at the Dunnottar Military Base in Nigel.
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said 14 members have been discharged while nine remain in hospital as they are receiving further medical attention.
Dlamini said the driver who ploughed onto the crime wardens was taken into custody and is also under medical supervision. A case was also opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Dlamini said Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited the scene to receive a full briefing on the incident.
“Social workers, psychologists and chaplains have been dispatched to families of the injured and hospitalised members in order to provide support.
“An investigation to determine the circumstances which led to this unexpected incident continues,” Dlamini said.
In June, Lesufi responded to a circulating letter about the termination of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Green Army contracts.
“Someone is too excited. This letter was written without my consent or approval. The intentions are clear: to undermine the authority of the 7th administration. This will not be allowed!” Lesufi said on X.
Confusion arose regarding the EPWP Green Army contracts and the continued employment of the Gauteng crime wardens.
“Going nowhere! There’s confusion about the EPWP Green Army contracts and the continued employment of the Gauteng Traffic Wardens,” Lesufi acknowledged.
The EPWP Green Army is responsible for cleaning the environment and waste removal, while the Gauteng Traffic Wardens focus on crime prevention.
Furthermore, the controversial letter stated, “This communique serves to remind you regarding the contractual agreement that came to an end on 31 May.” It also mentioned that workers would receive payment for days worked in June but noted a delay in stipends due to “administrative and systemic processes” following the contract’s expiration on 31 May.
]]>This follows the department’s decision to collect samples for laboratory testing at the National Institute for Communicable Disease (NICD).
The Gauteng Department of Education had confirmed that a grade one learner from Iketleng Primary School in Hammanskraal tested positive for Mpox but later retracted the statement.
“Our initial statement was based on official correspondence received from the school. However, we may have acted prematurely in confirming the case without awaiting the final verification from the NICD. We apologise for any confusion or concern this may have caused,” Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said.
Health spokesperson Foster Mohale said the public should report to a healthcare facility when they experience any suspicious symptoms related to Mpox instead of self-diagnosing and isolating without laboratory confirmation.
“Working together as communities and health authorities, we can prevent unnecessary panic and avoidable stigma. The country has not recorded any new cases of Mpox for last week, which confirms that the situation is under control.
“However, this does not mean that we are off the hook or should lower our guard. And we cannot guarantee at the current moment that this infectious disease has been eradicated because it may re-emerge once severe cases present for healthcare,” Mohale said.
Mpox symptoms include an acute illness characterised by fever and general flu-like symptoms, followed by the eruption of a blister-like rash on the skin. Most people fully recover, but some get very sick, Mohale emphasised
Common symptoms of Mpox are:
For some people, the first symptom of mpox is a rash, while others may have different symptoms first.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said the rash begins as a flat sore, which develops into a blister filled with liquid and may be itchy or painful. As the rash heals, the lesions dry up, crust over and fall off.
]]>Speaking in Cape Town on Thursday afternoon, Malema expressed satisfaction with the ANC in Gauteng, led by Lesufi, after the premier shut the Democratic Alliance (DA) out of his provincial executive.
“The province of Gauteng… it has completely rejected the DA and went on to constitute government without them. We are going to make sure that the government of Gauteng works,” said Malema, speaking ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s opening of Parliament address on Thursday evening.
Malema was addressing the media after a meeting of the so-called Progressive Caucus of Parliament, consisting of:
This grouping has been setup as an antithesis to the 10 government of national unity parties, made up of:
Lesufi snubbed the DA when he named Gauteng members of the executive council (MECs) on 3 July 2024, bucking the trend seen in KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Zulu’s group of MECs and Ramaphosa’s ministers and their deputies.
And for keeping the DA out of the provincial Cabinet, Malema is prepared to work with the ANC in the Gauteng legislature and government.
“We’re going to support it [Gauteng government] because not supporting the government of Gauteng is to support the DA. If the Gauteng government fails, the doomsdayers are going to say ‘you see if you don’t work with the DA, you are going to fail’,” said the EFF leader.
However, Malema stressed that the EFF was not in a coalition with the ANC, but would vote with the party on issues based on their merits. He also said this relationship would serve as an example to the ANC’s national executive committee.
“We are not in an alliance with them [the ANC in Gauteng]. We are going to vote for their budget, for whatever is required from us, in order to defeat DA and demonstrate to the national [ANC] leadership that you could have done the same. You don’t need the DA,” said the self-styled commander-in-chief of the Red Berets.

]]>Last Wednesday, Gauteng High Court in Pretoria judge Mmonoa Teffo found that former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and Mental Health Director Makgabo Manamela are liable for the deaths of nine of the 144 patients who died.
The South African previously reported that in 2016 about 1 500 mental patients were moved to unlicensed NGOs that failed to provide proper care and as a result 144 patients died. This came after the Gauteng Department of Health decided to terminate a 30-year contract with Life Esidimeni Healthcare Centre in October 2015.
Following the judgement, DA Gauteng spokesperson on Health Jack Bloom said there is an enormous amount of testimony that should be used to prosecute not only Mahlangu and Manamela, who were found liable for the deaths of nine people, but others implicated in the suffering of the hundreds of people with a mental health condition sent to unsuitable NGOs.
Bloom said Mahlangu and Manamela should be charged with culpable homicide. Still, there were also many contraventions of the Mental Health Care Act (MHCA) and the National Health Act (NHA), which have severe penalties for negligent treatment.
Further, Bloom said the party’s spokesperson on Justice Glynnis Breytenbach will write to the NPA so it can provide details by 15 August this year of who will be charged and for what offences concerning the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
“She will question them in Parliament’s Justice Portfolio Committee if firm assurances are not given. We need to know what measures are being taken to expedite the charges and court procedures so that justice is finally served in this terrible tragedy,” Bloom said.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the Life Esidimeni judgment came two years after the inquest hearing started on 19 July 2021, during which 40 witnesses were called to testify. Some of those witnesses include MEC Qedani Mahlangu, Dr Makgabo Manamela, the former Gauteng Premier David Makhura, and the former Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy.
“The next step is that the office of the DPP will thoroughly study the judgment to determine whether the NPA will institute prosecutions against the two individuals whom the court found can be held liable for the deaths,” Mahanjana said.
]]>In the judgment, Gauteng High Court in Pretoria Judge Mmonoa Teffo found that Mahlangu and the former Gauteng mental health head Dr Makgabo Manamela can be held liable for the death of nine patients. The judge also found that no one can be held liable for the other 133 patients who died.
In 2016 about 1 500 mental patients were moved to unlicensed NGOs that failed to provide proper care and as a result 144 patients died. This came after the Gauteng Department of Health decided to terminate a 30-year contract with Life Esidimeni Healthcare Centre in October 2015.
Patients were reportedly hurriedly transferred to ill-equipped and often unlicensed NGOs in what was known as the Gauteng Mental Health Marathon Project. In addition, due process was not followed, and the move was rushed owing to political pressure.
In some instances, officials knew that the NGOs were not ready for patients. Plans went ahead despite warnings from various sectors of society, concerned family members and health officials.
Many licences for the marathon project were unlawfully revised and backdated, and inspections were not conducted. A number of NGOs did not even have good security or enough medication, food and beds.
On Wednesday, Teffo said that having heard all the evidence in this inquest she has come to the conclusion that the death of the deceased where due to negligence caused by the conduct of Mahlangu and Manamela.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi he is pleased that the process that brought so much pain and suffering to those who lost their loved ones, and the survivors those whose human rights were grossly violated is nearing the end.
“This judgment closes a painful chapter, not only for the affected families but for us as the Gauteng provincial government. We are confident that the National Prosecuting Authority will take this judgment forward and we await the conclusion of this matter,” Lesufi said.
]]>The horrific accident happened around 6:45 on Wednesday, 10 July. A bakkie allegedly hit the scholar transport from behind, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, a private scholar transport minibus was involved in a tragic accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, claiming the lives of the 12 learners and their driver. Additionally, seven other learners were injured and rushed to a medical facility for urgent medical attention.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department has already dispatched its psycho-social support team to the school to provide immediate support and work closely with the school and affected families. Counselling services will be made available to all learners and staff members to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of this tragedy.
Chiloane said he is saddened by this tragic event, emphasising that the loss of children is a devastating blow to the schooling community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and entire community of both schools during this tough time. We also wish all injured learners a speedy recovery,” Chiloane said.
DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Education Sergio Isa dos Santos said in the wake of this saddening event, they want MEC Chiloane to promptly review the current scholar transport policy, which has failed to adequately serve learners in the province, leading to numerous fatal car accidents involving learners.
Dos Santos urged Gauteng Education to work with the investigative authorities to determine the facts surrounding the tragedy and bring the case to a conclusion. The families of these pupils deserve to know what occurred and whether it might have been avoided.
“As part of our unwavering dedication to securing the future of Gauteng’s children through quality education, we will closely monitor the investigation of this incident and relentlessly pursue the establishment of a reviewed scholar transport policy that not only saves lives but also paves the way for a brighter future for our children,” dos Santos said.
Following the incident, newly appointed Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said the loss of loved ones is never easy; the loss is markedly acute when it is children
that have to be buried.
“We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the parents of the children; we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, hoping that healing and grace locate you. We also wish the learners hurt in the accident a full and speedy recovery,” Gwarube said.

]]>Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance-run Western Cape has just had its credit rating upgraded. Moody’s said good governance, due to improved revenue collection and enhanced infrastructure programmes, was the reason behind its upgrade to ‘Ba3’ status. This trumps South Africa’s overall sovereign rating of ‘Ba2’, which still languishes two notches below investment grade.
The failings of Premier Lesufi to oversee a coalition Cabinet in Gauteng this week saw the DA’s Refiloe Nt’sekhe resign from the Deputy Speaker position in the Gauteng Legislature. According to BusinessLive, the African National Congress (ANC) only received 36% voter support in Gauteng province.
And instead of embracing the ethos of a Government of National Unity (GNU), Premier Lesufi chose to play musical chairs and entrust only his comrades with key portfolios. These included the Treasury, Economic Development, Social Development, Health and Human settlements. However, critics have labelled this ‘recycling of failed leaders’ from the sixth administration as a ‘death knell’ for service delivery in Gauteng.
The DA was unhappy when Premier Lesufi offered it only three positions. The party wanted the portfolios to be shared proportionally based on votes. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) even weighed in, saying it was unimpressed by the reappointment of the same old ANC leaders to government positions.
“Equally uninspiring is the motivation behind the recycling of ANC leadership in government. The ANC has not appointed credible and dedicated individuals to serve the people of Gauteng. The recycling of a failed collective is confirmation that unemployment, high levels of crime, ailing infrastructure, a failing economy, a housing backlog, poor healthcare system and shortage of education will sustain in Gauteng,” concluded the EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga.
Meanwhile, ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni said the Cabinet of Premier Lesufi in Gauteng: “Represents a mere continuation of the same politics that brought South Africa’s economic hub to its knees. Therefore, residents should not hold their breath for any real change in the provincial government’s comical approach to governance.”
On the de-resolution of DA involvement in the Gauteng provincial government, its provincial leader, Solly Msimanga, said: “The DA did not go into this for the sake of adding numbers or wanting positions for the sake of it. We wanted to be there strategically, to bring changes we wanted to see.
What do you think of Gauteng’s Premier Lesufi? Could he have done more in leading his coalition Cabinet? Be sure to share your thoughts with our audience in the comments section below. And don’t forget to follow us @TheSANews on X and The South African on Facebook for the latest updates.
]]>DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille says they will be occupying opposition benches in the Gauteng legislature after talks with the ANC in Gauteng yielded no favourable results in the battle for positions in Lesufi’s executive council.
According to Zille, the ANC has refused to give them proportional representation as members of the executive council (MECs) and she told SABC News that it is because Luthuli House has still not accepted defeat in the 29 May elections.
“ANC has not come to terms with the fact that they have lost elections,” said Zille. The ANC won 28 seats in the Gauteng legislature while the DA garnered 22 out of a total 80 seats and because of this split, the DA scoffed at what it saw as a paltry offer of two MEC positions from the ANC.
Minutes before the Blue Party announced on Wednesday that “the offer made to the DA was and continues to be one we find both unfair and unreasonable”, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula and Lesufi – who is also ANC Gauteng chairperson – said MECs for the province would be announced in the evening.
“We are going to announce a [provincial] Cabinet that represents the citizens of Gauteng,” said Lesufi.
And Mbalula added that if the DA is not happy with Lesufi’s provincial Cabinet when it is announced on Wednesday, they are welcome to occupy the opposition benches in the Gauteng legislature.
Earlier on Wednesday after the deputy president, 75 Cabinet ministers and their deputies were sworn in at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, DA federal leader John Steenhuisen said the ANC would struggle to work without them in the Gauteng legislature.
“Good luck to them trying to get a budget passed,” Steenhuisen, who is the new minister of agriculture, told Newzroom Afrika‘s Ziyanda Ngcobo.
Without the DA, the ANC needs 13 seats to pass budgets in Gauteng, meaning they need support from the Patriotic Alliance (2 seats) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (11 seats) for instance, among other collaboration possibilities.

]]>Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi was expected to announce the executive council members on Monday evening. Initially, the announcement was expected on Sunday, 23 June, but it was postponed.
As previously reported by The South African, Andrek ‘Panyaza’ Lesufi was re-elected as Gauteng premier during the Gauteng Provincial Legislature first sitting on Friday, 14 June.
Lesufi was nominated for the premiership and was elected unopposed.
Former Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Morakane Mosupyoe was also elected unopposed as speaker for the Gauteng Legislature. The Democratic Alliance’s Refiloe Ntsheke was elected Deputy Speaker.
As per the Electoral Commission of South Africa, no political party achieved an outright majority in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. Support for the ANC in Gauteng declined from 50% in 2019 to just 36%. The party resorted to forming a Government of Provincial Unity.
Nationally, support also declined to just 40% forcing the liberation party to work with other political parties to form government for the seventh administration.
On Monday, ANC leadership in Gauteng confirmed that there was a disagreement between the DA and itself, however, all other parties in the GPU agree with the ANC.
The leadership accused the DA of behaving like a spoilt brat and acting as if the two parties are the only ones in a coalition in the province.
According to reports, the ANC was meant to get six positions while the DA gets four and smaller parties get two positions.
“With or without the DA, we believe in Gauteng we will be able to form a government, but we’re saying it with utmost respect. We’ve given all parties respect, in fact, we have spoken to all parties including a party with one seat,” ANC Gauteng Secretary Thembinkosi Nciza said.
The ANC said Lesufi will announce the Gauteng cabinet no later than Tuesday, 2 July. Coincidentally, recently-appointed Ministers will be sworn in at the Union Buildings in Tshwane on Tuesday.
]]>Le Grange appeared in court following his arrest on Wednesday morning. The Serious Economic Offences unit arrested him.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said Le Grange was arrested for two counts of racketeering under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, five counts of fraud, one count of corruption under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, and three counts of contravention of the Financial Markets Act in relation to the Steinhoff investigation.
Mogale said Le Grange appeared alongside his co-accused, Stephanus Johannes Grobler, 74, the former Head of Treasury.
As previously reported, Grobler was arrested on 22 March and appeared in court on 25 March, where he was granted R150 000.
Before Steinhoff’s liquidation in October last year, the company reportedly demanded that Grobler pay back close to R300 million in salaries, bonuses and incentives.
“Today, he appeared again for a postponement and review of his bail conditions. Le Grange was also granted R150 000 bail with conditions, and both will appear again in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 4 October,” Mogale added.
Markus Jooste was the mastermind behind the Steinhoff scandal, South Africa’s most prominent corporate fraud. He reportedly committed suicide in Hermanus, Cape Town, on Thursday, 21 March.
Following the alleged death, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) said the investigation into Steinhoff will continue as other investigating parties are involved.
The Authority said it will also continue to assist the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with any investigations they may have underway.
“As the penalty on the late Mr Jooste in his personal capacity was already imposed at the time of his death, his passing does not impact on the penalty.
“The FSCA is legally entitled to recover the penalty from the estate of the late Mr Jooste. Whether the Authority will claim against the estate will be decided at the appropriate time, considering all the relevant circumstances.”
]]>The incident happened on Monday, 24 June.
City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Charles Mabaso said they were notified of the incident at approximately 18:44 and immediately dispatched firefighting resources to the incident.
Mabaso said firefighters arrived on the scene to find that the hospital staff had already extinguished the fire in a single isolation ward using portable fire extinguishers.
“A female patient aged 35 years suffered burns inside the ward and unfortunately lost her life. She was declared dead by a medical doctor on the scene. A total of 19 female patients were safely evacuated to another psychiatric ward with no injuries. Firefighters conducted positive pressure ventilation to rid the ward of excessive smoke,” he explained.
Mabaso said the cause of the fire is not yet known, and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS).
The Gauteng Department of Health said the deceased female patient was admitted at Dr George Mukhari Hospital on 20 June. She was placed in a seclusion room on Monday as part of her prescribed treatment.
“The Department wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the patient’s family as they mourn the sudden passing of their daughter. Both the bereaved family and the families of the 17 patients will be taken through a debriefing. Counselling services will also be made available to them,” Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said.

In February, Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said a person impersonating a medical doctor was nabbed at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital after they demanded that an escort to a patient pay R700 for the alleged doctor to assist the patient.
Modiba said the member of the public became suspicious when the bogus doctor, who was wearing green scrubs with the name Dr Zulu imprinted on the uniform, advised her to meet at the pedestrian gate where to make the payment.
“The escort notified the security personnel, who eventually apprehended the bogus doctor at the hospital’s pedestrian gate. When asked to produce her Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registration number and a personal number by the security and facility management, the bogus doctor could not do so,” he explained.
Recently, another bogus doctor, Matthew Lani, sent shocking waves across the country after stealing the identity of an intern doctor.
Lani was arrested, but his case was thrown out of court as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said you could not be charged for lying as lying is not an offence unless you are lying under oath.
NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said there is no evidence to sustain the charge or link Lani to the alleged offence of impersonating a personality.
According to ZiMoja, the popular TikTok user is demanding R9 million from the Gauteng Department of Health after he was arrested by security personnel at the Helen Joseph Hospital.
In a letter of demand, Lani’s lawyer, Phathutshedzo Owen Sithi of SNT Attorneys, said the fake doctor “was maliciously and unlawfully arrested and detained by security personnel of Potlako Security & Cleaning Services stationed at Helen Joseph Hospital” in October 2023.
]]>The load reduction is implemented between 18:00 and 22:00 daily in areas that are supplied by the Soshanguve 132/11kv substation.
The metro municipality said inclement weather has resulted in a sharp increase in electricity demand and the available grid is unable to cope with the strain.
“The move to implement load reduction in Soshanguve was informed by the current status of the 132/11kv substation which is experiencing power overload as a result of illegal connections,” the City of Tshwane said.
Here are the affected areas:
Monday – Block V, T and W
Tuesday – Block KK, SS and X
Wednesday – Block S, X- Buffer A and B
Thursday – Block R and KK
Friday – Block T, V and R
Saturday – Block KK and R
Sunday – Block W, R, X, X-Buffer A and B
The City of Tshwane has also asked residents to report illegal connections.
“The option of load reduction has an advantage to consumers in that it prevents extended and unplanned power outages, which could last for days, as the electrical protection schemes are bound to trip if overloading is not managed. It also saves the city from incurring unnecessary costs which might come as a result of extensive damages to the substation,” the municipality said.
In addition, the City of Tshwane defended its decision saying due to the vulnerability of the substation mentioned earlier, it had two options; to either leave the feeders to trip on their own (this would have resulted in two secondary substations being off and 80% of Jukulyn losing power) or to allow the region to manage the load reduction.
City of Tshwane technicians will monitor the performance of the grid and may increase or reduce the number of areas affected when it becomes necessary.
“The city will communicate the following week’s load reduction schedule every Friday to keep the affected consumers updated at all times.”
]]>The maintenance is scheduled from 18:00 on Monday, 17 June, until 6:00 on Tuesday, 18 June.
The City of Tshwane said Rand Water would replace and upgrade some of the bulk water metres that supply various reservoirs in the metro’s regions.
The municipality said that, where possible, the affected reservoirs will be filled to capacity before maintenance. However, water supply may be interrupted during the upkeep period.
The following areas might be affected by the interruption:
The City of Tshwane also apologised for the inconvenience that may be encountered due to the Rand Water maintenance work.
Earlier this week, the City of Tshwane took significant steps to tackle its water and sanitation challenges by formalising partnerships with key stakeholders.
Among these partners, the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is playing a pivotal role, offering both regulatory oversight and technical and financial resources to address issues such as the Hennops River pollution, the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works, and staffing shortages.
Tshwane City Manager Johann Mettler and Deputy Director-General for Water and Sanitation Services Dr. Risimati Mathye signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Tshwane House.
This agreement outlines a collaboration on various strategic areas, including infrastructure planning, water resource management, and capacity building for municipal officials. Additionally, the MoU aims to leverage the strengths of both entities to develop effective solutions for the city’s pressing water and sanitation issues.
Mathye said they are pleased by the will and zeal shown by the city in ensuring collaborative efforts.
“Addressing our major water challenges requires a joint effort between the city and key water stakeholders, with the DWS being a key player,” Mathye added.
In addition, a flagship engineering candidacy development program is in advanced stages of discussion. This initiative will involve the secondment of candidate engineers and professional engineers to Tshwane for three years.
The DWS will provide free mentorship through its database of mentors to help these engineers obtain professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Also, this program is expected to enhance the city’s compliance with new ECSA Identification of Engineering Work Regulations.
]]>The Presidential inauguration is expected to be attended by Cyril Ramaphosa, the president-elect of the Republic of South Africa, foreign heads of State, invited guests, and members of the public.
Ramaphosa was duly elected during the first sitting of the National Assembly at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Friday, 14 June.
His re-election follows in the footsteps of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, who were also two-term presidents. However, Mbeki and Zuma did not complete their terms as both were recalled before completing their tenures.
Ramaphosa’s re-election as president also comes on the back of a coalition announcement between the ANC and Democratic Alliance.
Road Closures around the Union Buildings will be implemented from 3:00 on Wednesday, 19 June, until 6:00 on Thursday, 20 June.
Lesufi was elected during the Gauteng Provincial Legislature first sitting on Friday, 14 June.
Before the election, Gauteng judge president Dunstan Mlambo presided over the official swear-in ceremony of all members of the provincial legislature (MPLs), in the chambers in Johannesburg.
As per the Electoral Commission of South Africa, no political party achieved an outright majority in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections. Support for the ANC in Gauteng declined from 50% in 2019 to just 36%.
Nationally, support also declined to just 40% forcing the liberation party to work with other political parties to form government for the seventh administration.
After the 2021 local government elections, most municipalities in Gauteng have been governed through coalitions, especially the metros such as Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane.
Vythilingam has been testifying about the cellphone records of the accused at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Vythilingam has been testifying about a section 205 procedure she did on accused three Mthobisi Mncube’s phone, which shows all calls made and received by the number, when and where they were made.
On Wednesday, she told the court about communication between Mncube and accused 5 Fisokuhle Ntuli before and after Meyiwa was murdered.
Meyiwa was shot and killed at the home of his then-girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on 26 October 2014. Kelly’s sister Zandile and Meyiwa’s close friends Mthokozisi Twala and Tumelo Madlala were among the eyewitnesses and have also testified in the ongoing trial.
Last Tuesday, Vythilingam told the court that a SIM swap was done on Meyiwa’s phone just hours after his death. Additionally, 63 successful calls were made using the swapped card.
Vythilingam said that somebody did the sim swap on 27 October 2014 at Cellucity at the Benmore Gardens Shopping Centre.
Interestingly, the newly swapped card was used in former Kaizer Chiefs footballer David Mathebula’s handset.
Court proceedings normally start at 10:00, adjourn at 11:15 for a tea break, run again until 13:00 for lunch and resume again at 14:00. However, due to unforeseen circumstances on a particular day, there are delays, and sometimes court adjourns for either tea or lunch earlier than the set times indicated above.
]]>Vythilingam took to the stand at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria after she couldn’t continue with her testimony on two occasions due to ill health.
On Tuesday, Vythilingam revealed that cellphone data indicated that accused 3 Mthobisi Mncube and accused 5 Fisokuhle Ntuli were around the George Goch Hostel in Johannesburg around 17:00 on 26 October 2014.
Meyiwa was shot and killed at the home of his girlfriend and artist Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014.
The five men on trial previously told the court that they do not know each other and only met in court for the first time.
At the same time, in 2023, retired cellphone data analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn testified about how they were able to link all the five accused based on calls between each other before Meyiwa was murdered.

Interestingly, the new swapped card was used in former Kaizer Chiefs footballer David Mathebula’s handset.
The court also heard that eight calls were made between David Mathebula’s phone and Kelly Khumalo. However, it was not clear who made the calls as they were all “call forwards”, meaning they were not picked up because the phone was off or the other phone had no signal.
Additionally, there were over 100 calls made between some of the accused.

The name of the retail agent who facilitated the process was also provided in court. However, when questioned by state prosecutor Ronnie Sibanda, Vythilingam was unable to say who requested the swap, the SABC reported.
In 2023, retired cellphone data analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn told the court that the person who could have done the SIM swap was someone close to Meyiwa and who would’ve been in possession of his ID. He further explained that they were able to link all the five accused based on calls between each other before Meyiwa was murdered.
Meyiwa’s close friend Mthokozisi Thwala said his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo was in possession of some of Meyiwa’s personal belongings including his ID. Thwala also told the court that Khumalo had refused to hand over the late goalkeeper’s ID and his family was escorted by police to fetch it.
The forensic supervisor also testified that the swapped card was inserted and used on former soccer star David Mathebula’s cellphone. Mathebula had reportedly called Khumalo eight times the day Senzo Meyiwa was murdered.

The matter hit a snag on Wednesday as Vythilingam was unwell. She has been testifying at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria about a SIM swap that was done on Meyiwa’s phone a day after his murder.
On Wednesday, the state indicated that Vythilingam cannot continue with her testimony as scheduled because her voice was hoarse.
Apart from the witness feeling unwell, other defence lawyers were not in court on Wednesday and had asked another legal representative to stand in for them.

This contradicts the testimony of the first State witness and Kelly’s sister, Zandile Khumalo, who said that they found Meyiwa’s phone in the kitchen when they returned from Botshelong Hospital on the day of the incident.
During his testimony, Steyn also told the court how Khumalo was in contact with retired footballer David Mathebula following Meyiwa’s murder.
The Empini hitmaker, whose phone was reportedly stolen when Meyiwa was shot, was in the vicinity of a hostel in Vosloorus around 22:43 the same night.
Steyn further revealed the new SIM card was used in former Kaizer Chiefs footballer David Mathebula’s handset.
Steyn found that eight calls were made between David Mathebula’s phone and Kelly Khumalo, he however said it could be an old phone in which they had inserted the SIM card. ]]>Gouws has been testifying at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria about data extracted from the cellphones of the accused.
On Thursday, the defence disputed that accused three Mthobisi Prince Mncube contacted singer Kelly Khumalo the day Meyiwa was murdered.
Meyiwa was shot and killed at Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014 in what was initially thought to be a botched robbery. The two were dating at the time and have a child together.
The State is adamant that Mncube did contact the Asine hitmaker as she used multiple cellphone numbers at the time.
Last week, during the cross-examination led by the legal representative of accused four, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, advocate Zithulele Nxumalo, Gouws disclosed that Maphisa contacted accused one, Muzikawukhalelwa Sibiya, on 14 occasions.
Furthermore, Gouws revealed that Maphisa contacted accused five Fisokuhle Ntuli on over 100 occasions. This also comprised of 125 direct calls and SMSs.
Additionally, accused four directly contacted accused three, Mthobisi Mncube, at least 20 times.
