TRENDING: CAN anyone apply for a SASSA Old-Age Grant on your behalf?

Just as the government department of SASSA is beginning to show cracks, following numerous wrongful suspensions and fraudulent accounts, so the NSFAS will be tested to breaking point in 2024, says USAF.

NSFAS OVERLOAD IN 2024

Handling more than R46-billion in grants, the NSFAS is mired in tender corruption allegations. OUTA released leaked recordings two weeks ago in which service providers were allegedly awarded lucrative tenders in exchange for paying bribes to Ernest Khosa and Education Minister, Blade Nzimande.

ALSO READ: When must old-age pensioners reapply for SASSA Grants in 2024?

To deflect attention away from the allegations, Nzimande announced R3.8-billion student funding for South Africa’s ‘missing middle’ last week. Now, Dr. Phethiwe Matutu, CEO of USAF worries that tens of thousands of bursary applications so close to the start of the academic year will trigger NSFAS overload.

SCHEME CAN’T DO IT ALONE

Watch South Africa’s top universities in 2024 video

In a report by Business Tech, Matutu says: “If NSFAS does everything by itself, it will be too much. I urge government to seek administrative support from universities and the private sector in the short time frame before universities reopen.”

ALSO READ: Essential INFO for South African ID applications in 2024

Clearly fast-tracked as a ploy to deflect attention from allegations of misconduct, USAF is unaware and unprepared for how the ‘missing middle’ fund will work. Representing 26 public universities in South Africa, USAF insists it’s in the dark as far as implementation from the Department of Higher Education is concerned.

URGED TO RELEASE DETAILS

What does the NSFAS bursary cover

Matutu said USAF welcomes any type of new funding, however, she urged the department to release details of the scheme as soon as possible. And, crucially, with just weeks to go to the start of term, to begin the application process.

The ‘missing middle’ refers to students who come from a household income of no less than R350 000 and no more than R600 000 per annum. Until now, the NSFAS has focused on low-income households, disbursing more than R123 billion worth of student loans to nearly 3-million needy beneficiaries.

2023 PAYMENTS STILL MISSING

NSFAS overload
Image: File

At the end of 2023, the NSFAS appeared to be ‘on the brink of collapse’ over late and non-payment of allowances. It is understood that more than 80 000 students did not receive their funding. This made for a disastrous end-of-year examination period for the affected beneficiaries.

This baked scone recipe has a lovely orange glaze,

Ingredients

  • cup white sugar

  • 1 large 1 orange, freshly squeezed

  • 2 cups 2 all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp 1 baking powder

  • ½ tsp ½ salt

  • ½ cup ½ unsalted butter

  • 1 large 1 egg

  • For the glaze
  • 3 tbsp 3 unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 cup 1 castor sugar

  • ½ tsp ½ vanilla essence

  • 2-4 tbsp 2-4 freshly squeezed orange juice

Method

  • Preheat oven to 170°C and line your baking tray with a baking sheet. Set aside.
  • For your dry ingredients mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl melt butter and mix with orange juice and an egg, stirring until it is smooth. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and combine using a fork. Once combined use your hands to work in the dough, pressing it on the side of the bowl to form into a ball, when you are done the texture of the dough will not be sticky but easy to form.
  • Lightly flour a clean surface and roll your dough out until it’s flat (about 2cm thick). Using a cup or round cookie cutter, cut the scones into round shapes and transfer them onto a baking tray.
  • Bake scones for 15-20 minutes or until the top begins to golden and the scones are puffed. Set the tray aside and allow the scones to cool for at least 10 minutes while preparing the glaze.
  • For the glaze
  • Stir melted butter together with castor sugar, vanilla essence and orange juice until smooth. Once the scones are cooled completely, drizzle the glaze onto the top using a spoon.

Notes

  • Only add the glaze to cool scones as adding it to warm scones will allow the glaze to seep into the scones making them two moist and soft.
  • These scones can hold at room temperature for about 3-5 days when sealed in an airtight container.
  • Another glazing option is to egg wash your scones by beating an egg with a pinch of salt and brushing the tops before baking

  • sour cream

Method

  • Chop your chicken breasts and/or into cubes and season with your preferred mixture of chilli powder, paprika, fresh thyme, rosemary, ginger and garlic, mixed herbs, whole black pepper and salt. Paprika is key for the Mexican flavour.
  • Prepare your next topping. Sauté your vegetables in butter, fresh thyme and soy sauce. You can add mushrooms, peppers and anything else you would like.
  • Make a quick salsa by whizzing together tomatoes, onions and green chillies in a food processor. When done season with salt, pepper and paprika.
  • Using a non-stick pan, fry your soft mini tortilla wraps until brown and ready.
  • Add lettuce, cabbage and cucumber to your tortilla wraps, followed by the chicken and veggies.
  • To make the taco hold together, poke a toothpick through the middle. Then top with cheddar and feta.
  • Bake until cheese melts or alternatively use an air fryer to melt the cheese.
  • Serve with guacamole and sour cream.

Ingredients

  • 250 g 250 butter

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 white granulated / icing sugar (depending on what you have)

  • 2 cups 2 cake flour

Method

  • In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy or pale in colour, using a whisk or wooden spoon.
  • Sift the flour and gradually add it, when it starts to resemble crumbs, you can use your hands. Just make sure you have enough flour so that the dough doesn’t stick in your hands.
  • You can place the dough in the fridge for at least 20 minutes, but if the craving has really got you, you can skip this step.
  • Dust some flour on the working surface and rolling pin. You can use a glass to make sure that your dough is flat if you don’t have a rolling pin.
  • You can use a glass again to cut your biscuits into a round shape or you can cut them into any shape you desire.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • You can go a step further on the biscuits and melt some white chocolate. Dip the biscuits in the melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles.

Three ways to deal with university rejection https://www.thesouthafrican.com/studentlife-c/three-ways-to-deal-with-university-rejection-student-matric-grade-12/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 19:29:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1305357 Application deadlines are looming for universities, with scores of Grade 12s expected to be finalising their submissions in the coming month. While it’s an exciting process, it can also be very distressing given that despite meeting the entry requirements, thousands of students get rejected by the country’s 26 public universities each year purely because there is not enough space for them.

“Public universities in South Africa work tirelessly to try and service all our school leavers, but it simply is not possible to offer a place to everyone who applies. This supply and demand issue is even more challenging when it comes to courses like engineering where there is a huge skills shortage,” explains Atelisha Harilal, National Student Recruitment Manager at Stadio.

ALSO READ: ‘Hit me up’: Gigi Lamayne helps student with university fees

THREE WAYS TO COPE WITH UNIVERSITY REJECTION:

  1. It is not you, it’s them – A good majority of those on the discard pile met each of the requirements for their preferred course and the only reason they were rejected is because of a capacity issue that is completely out of their control. “Although receiving a rejection is understandably upsetting, it is important to put things into context. This is by no means a reflection on you and your ability, so try not to let this blip define you. Private higher education institutions are able to provide qualifying students with a place to study a registered, recognised, and accredited qualification regardless of their situation when they left school. If you didn’t quite make your desired Admission Point Score (APS) points, then higher certificates are another way to start your journey of accessing degree studies,” says Harilal.
  2. Know there are other options – In most cases, students do not have enough information to seek alternatives. Instead, they are mistakenly led to believe that large public universities are their only option. It is key to understand that there are options available that are both accessible and affordable. Several registered, accredited private higher education institutions offer accessible and affordable qualifications via distance learning and contact (venue-based) learning. “Being able to enjoy an excellent, quality tertiary study experience, without the need to attend venue-based classes can be a game changer, especially during the current cost of living crisis,” continues Harilal.
  3. See this as redirection, not rejection – It is essential that students are not discouraged by rejection and instead remain upbeat and persevere on the road to achieving their goals. “Sometimes rejection can be a blessing in disguise – the perfect opportunity to adopt what is commonly known as the parachute approach. You begin, not with the university prospectus but with yourself,” says Harilal. Sit down and have an honest conversation with yourself, working out who you are and listing what you enjoy doing and what skills you think you are good at. Then go looking for a higher education provider or course that matches your skill set.

WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, EXERCISE CAUTION

Whatever you decide to study next, Harilal concludes with a warning on vigilance. It is imperative for students to check that both the institution and qualifications they choose to study are registered and accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). “Registered institutions receive a DHET certificate which can usually be found on their website, or you can request a copy from them directly. Students and parents can also use the unique South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) ID per qualification as another way to verify the institution’s validity,” she concludes.

#UKZNGrad2022: Businessman hires graduate after ‘moving’ viral photos https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/breaking-ukzn-graduation-2022-businessman-graduate-dumisani-ngobese-calvin-mathibeli-durban-viral-photos/ Sun, 15 May 2022 06:39:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1172251 University of KwaZulu-Natal graduate Dumisani Ngobese has had a happy ending after his graduation photos went viral on Friday 13 May.

The young man touched many hearts when he could not hold back his tears as he walked off stage during the joyous graduation ceremony at the university’s Durban Westville Campus. Among those moved is businessman Calvin Mathibeli who has offered him employment and a bursary.

DUMISANI NGOBESE’S STORY

Ngobese, a Bachelor of Arts graduate, was moved to tears during his graduation as he reflected on his “long and difficult journey” as a student.

The 23-year-old graduate was raised by his maternal grandmother in a rural area in KZN with over 10 children in one home.

“My grandmother was a street vendor and the sole breadwinner in the house where there were over 10 children,” UKZN quoted him as saying.

While his grandmother would have loved to see him graduate, she could not be present due to ill health.

“It was going to be difficult for her because she is not well and she would have had to take about three taxis to get here. But my mother and my aunt were present at the graduation,” he explained.

What also touched many about the young graduate’s story, was that he could not afford a suit for the occasion. Ngobese wore a black golf t-shirt and black jeans on the day.

A SECURE FUTURE

Following the young graduate’s story, thousands of messages poured in across different social media platforms. These included congratulatory messages, well wishes and pledges from South Africans who wanted to donate to him.

Calvin Mathibeli, a Durban businessman, also reached out to Ngobese and offered him permanent employment.

“I was so moved by his story because of his resilience but also because of the similarities that we have in terms of background. I spoke to him yesterday and I was very moved by his story,” said Mathibeli the owner of Calvin and Family Group of companies.

In addition, he explain that he created a vacancy for the resilient graduate and he will start his job on Monday 16 May. The businessman has also pledged to pay for Ngobese’s honours degree studies which he is currently pursuing at UKZN.

Buttermilk chocolate cake: The ultimate birthday cake https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/food/recipes/buttermilk-chocolate-cake-rich-dessert/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 15:03:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1154569 Do you love baking cakes? Do you love baking cakes for friends and their birthdays? Even if you’re a beginner baker, our buttermilk chocolate cake is moist, rich and perfectly delicious with very few ingredients. Chocolate is the world’s best flavour and chocolate cake is at the top of that food chain. We even have our own buttery cocoa icing to spread over the cake and decorate it. It is of course the tastiest icing out there.

Making your buttermilk chocolate cake

The recipe is very forgiving but baking is often an exact science. Don’t make your cake layers too thick and the icing is great for keeping them together. If you feel adventurous, some caramel goes just as well between the layers with the icing. Decorate your cake as you please which is half of the fun of baking in the first place. Nuts, cherries, chocolate bits or anything you want make great decorations. Don’t ice the cake before it’s completely cooled.

Buttermilk chocolate cake, a moist, rich and beautiful cake perfect for birthday parties or any celebrations with friends and family.

This baked scone recipe has a lovely orange glaze,

Ingredients

  • cup white sugar

  • 1 large 1 orange, freshly squeezed

  • 2 cups 2 all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp 1 baking powder

  • ½ tsp ½ salt

  • ½ cup ½ unsalted butter

  • 1 large 1 egg

  • INGREDIENTS – GLAZE
  • 3 tbsp 3 unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 cup 1 castor sugar

  • ½ tsp ½ vanilla essence

  • 2 tbsp 2 freshly squeezed orange juice

  • Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and combine using a fork.
  • Bake scones for 15-20 minutes or until the top begins to turn golden and the scones are puffed. Set the tray aside and allow the scones to cool for at least 10 minutes while preparing the glaze.
  • METHOD – GLAZE
  • Stir melted butter together with castor sugar, vanilla essence and orange juice until smooth. Once the scones are cooled completely, drizzle the glaze onto the top using a spoon.

Notes

  • Only add the glaze to cool scones as adding it to warm scones will allow the glaze to seep into the scones making them two moist and soft.
  • These scones can hold at room temperature for about 3-5 days when sealed in an airtight container.
  • Another glazing option is to egg wash your scones by beating an egg with a pinch of salt and brushing the tops before baking.

‘We are paying for everyone’s registration fees’: Lasizwe to students https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/breaking-lasizwe-dambuza-fees-must-fall-r10-goes-a-long-way-university-registration-fees-latest/ Wed, 02 Feb 2022 08:03:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1086118 Social media personality Lasizwe Dambuza announced that everyone who registered on the #R10GoesALongWay campaign will have their registration fees paid, via a video posted to Instagram on 1 February.

LASIZWE: ‘WE ARE PAYING FOR EVERYONE’S REGISTRATION FEES’

Lasizwe posted a video of himself addressing his #R10GoesALongWay campaign. He first joked that only selected students from a draw would get their registration fees paid but he explain that he was joking.

The social media personality said everyone who registered for the campaign will get their registration fees paid. Take a look..

“This is the most heartbreaking thing to do! ????????,” he began.

“JOKES!!! WE ARE PAYING FOR EVERYONE’s UNIVERSITY REGISTRATION FEES! Thank you to my friends @sibumabena @kingaya_ and @takkies7 for being part of this initiative. And a BIG THANK YOU TO @fundi_southafrica for helping us through out this whole process,” he continued.

“WE DID IT SOUTH AFRICA!!! STUDENTS ARE GETTING INTO UNIVERSITY!” he added.

WHAT IS THE #R10GOESALONG WAY CAMPAIGN?

Lasizwe launched the R10GoesALongWayCampaign in March 2021 alongside Sibu Mabena, Takkies Dinwiddy, and King Aya. The initiative was created to raise funds for students to pay their university registration fees.

This was because of the #FeesMustFall protests that took place during that time. The social media personality raised R1 million within five days with the help of sponsors.  So, Standard Bank matched that by donating another R1 million. This equated to R2 million.

The funding took some time to clear so Tweeps dragged Lasizwe over the R2 million.

Lasizwe first responded with memes but later told Daily Sun that it was the tax clearance process that had been taking a while.

“Usually, I’d be upset about the backlash and worry about what people are saying but this time around, I thought let them be. They don’t know what they’re talking about,” said Lasizwe to Daily Sun.

“Some companies that pledged to the initiative had to get tax clearances and it’s been a long process. Fundi has its own protocols it needs to adhere to,” he added.

The Drink or Tell the Truth host has since tweeted that trolls on Twitter ruined his beautiful campaign. This was before he announced that everyone who registered would receive the funding.

“Trolls really ruined a beautiful campaign that came from pure intensions to help students get registered into university,” he tweeted.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) announced that they have adopted the mandatory vaccine policy. This follows the detection of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, in South Africa on 25 November.

UJ requires all staff, post-doctoral research fellows and students to have either completed their first vaccination or be fully vaccinated before entering the campus.

“The vaccination policy states that staff, post-doctoral research fellows, and students will need to provide UJ with their vaccination status – first vaccination completed or fully vaccinated – before gaining access to any campus or facility. These measures also apply to ad hoc contractors, identified stakeholders and visitors,” said UJ.

UJ’s manager of strategic communication, Herman Esterhuizen the outcome of the mandatory vaccination policy is to allow access to the university while protecting the health and safety of everyone.

“Exemptions, based on medical or religious grounds, will be considered. It is important to note, however, that UJ will balance the rights of individuals against the collective rights of the broader university and the surrounding community. As the collective rights take precedence, the rights of individuals may be limited, in terms of section 36 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996,” the statement continued.

“The UCT senate voted overwhelmingly in favour of mandatory vaccination at their last meeting in September, with 83% of respondents in the ballot indicating support. The UCT College of Fellows has also released a statement supporting vaccination at UCT,” according to the university.

University of Pretoria takes top honours in new ranking by students https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/university-of-pretoria-ranking-students-studoc/ Thu, 09 Sep 2021 12:46:41 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=966286 After three of South Africa’s universities made it onto the top universities in the world list by the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the University of Pretoria took top honours in a new ranking by students.

Top Universities in South Africa

StuDocu, the higher education EdTech platform created for knowledge sharing, launched its second annual World University Ranking.

As the fastest growing market in terms of users, South Africa has been included in the ranking for the first time, which sees a survey of 100 000 students and recent graduates from 1 800 universities across 30 countries. The ranking is the only survey of its kind, as they highlight current student experiences and opinions.

A total of 24 South African universities were ranked by current students and recent grads, based on 16 categories that directly impact students and how they experience life on campus. The World University Ranking 2021 brings to the fore what current students can expect from their universities when they return to campus full-time and gave them the chance to grade their institutions on the quality of their remote operations during the pandemic.

The ranking also allows prospective students the opportunity to understand what each university offers. Unlike other lists, the ranking focuses not just on academic reputation, but also on-campus life, such as quality of food, safety, (on-campus) housing options, sports culture and even the dating scene.

The final question in the ranking asks each student to rate their likelihood to recommend their school to family and friends, providing each university with a Net Promoter Score. Three universities in South Africa – the University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg and the University of Cape Town – earned Net Promoter Scores of 9.1 and above, making them very likely to be recommended by current students.

Sport, safety and location

“We are very excited to have been able to include South Africa in our StuDocu World University Ranking this year,” said Marnix Broer, CEO and co-founder of StuDocu. “Across the board, South African students ranked their universities highly, which is great to see, giving the highest marks to the categories of sports, safety and location. Unfortunately, dating on campus didn’t fare so well, garnering the lowest rankings in general.”

Broer added that the ranking 2021 is one of the only rankings that highlight the student experience from the inside, with rankings that showcase current student sentiment. By highlighting unique categories not found in other surveys, Broer and his team aim to provide a holistic view of the overall educational experience at each of the world’s universities, empowering students to choose the best experience to fit their individual needs.

Based on the likelihood of students recommending their university to family and friends, the Net Promoter Score and rank were determined. The top universities in South Africa for the StuDocu World University Ranking 2021 are:

World University Ranking 2021

  1. University of Pretoria
  2. University of Johannesburg
  3. University of Cape Town
  4. North-West University
  5. Durban University of Technology
  6. University of Western Cape
  7. University of Witwatersrand

Second tragedy for Fort Hare: Final-year student falls to his death https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/second-tragedy-for-fort-hare-final-year-student-falls-to-his-death/ Sun, 22 Aug 2021 14:30:26 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=951652 Tragedy has once again the University of Fort Hare within a space of a few days. This time a 24-year-old male student who died after allegedly falling from the 12th floor of a student residence building.

The incident occurred at the institution’s East London campus on Saturday, 21 August 2021.

For now, all indications are that the final-year Law student took his own life.

“The university confirms the death of a BCom Law student from Mount Coke Mission. We established the male student’s father passed away one week ago. Initial investigations point strongly to a possible suicide event. Police are on scene and working with the university’s investigations unit,” University of Fort Hare spokesperson JP Roodt is quoted as having said.

No foul play suspected in Fort Hare student’s death

According to police, the student was seen on the 12th floor before being found dead on the fifth floor. Provincial police spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana says they are not suspecting foul play in his death.

“Fellow students and a matron were immediately notified about the incident. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. No foul play is suspected at this stage,” she said.

An inquest docket has however been opened.

This is another shock for the University of Fort Hare community as it is already coming to terms with the gruesome killing of Nosicelo Mtebeni, who was also a Law student at the institution. She was in her fourth year and was savagely murdered, allegedly by her boyfriend.

The 23-year-old’s dismembered body parts were stuffed into a suit case. Her other limbs were also found in a black plastic bag on Thursday, 19 August 2021, in Quigney, East London.

Her 25-year-old boyfriend is the main suspect and is expected to make an appearance in court on Monday, 23 August.

Police said the body parts (in the black bag and suitcase) were discovered outside the couple’s home, while Mtebeni’s head was found inside their cupboard.

MAJEBE REACTS TO THE GOOD NEWS

In an article on UCT’s website, Majebe detailed how she felt when she received the e-mail about the scholarship from UCT Faculty of Humanities dean Shose Kessi.

Majebe is a first-year social science student, majoring in political studies and sociology and was hoping for the news to be positive upon receiving the e-mail.

“It is my pleasure to inform you that your application for the Uyinene Mrwetyana Scholarship in 2021 has been successful, read the opening line of the e-mail sent to Majebe.”

UCT’s article also pointed out that e-mail confirmed what Majebe and her family had been praying for and that she has never been more grateful.

“I feel honoured, humbled and privileged that I have been selected to receive this scholarship. I don’t take this decision lightly, because I am well aware of the responsibility that now rests on my shoulders,” Majebe stated in the article.

Aim of the Uyinene Mrwetyana scholarship

The scholarship is an initiative of the Faculty of Humanities and has been set up in partnership with UCT’s Development and Alumni Department. It’s aimed at eligible students in the humanities faculty.

The scholarship provides wrap-around funding which covers tuition, textbooks, accommodation, as well as health and wellness, for the duration of the recipient’s undergraduate degree at UCT.

Preserving Mrwetyana’s memory

The scholarship provides Majebe the opportunity to study towards the degree of her choice in a field that fascinates her, and it provides a platform for her to raise awareness of gender-based violence in South Africa, and she wants to preserve Mrwetyana’s memory

“It is important that everyone understands the impact Uyinene’s tragic passing has had on UCT, South Africa and society. This scholarship is a way of propagating her legacy within the university, and to help fight GBV,” said Majebe.

Nathalie Emmanuel: Either ‘too busy or broke’ to get licence

“I started learning to drive when I was, like, 17 and then I started acting and I was just, like, busy. I was either busy or broke – that’s the life of an actor, really! And it’s only in recent years that I’ve actually had the time and the finances to do it, because it’s expensive. It’s expensive to learn in England, especially.

“But now I’ve got a bit more time where I can maybe try and get an intensive course in and finally get it. I actually know how to drive a car, I just haven’t got the legal license that says you can do it without getting arrested.”

F9′, also featuring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and John Cena, was released in US cinemas last week.

Who’s wearing the pants? Rich Mnisi skirts the norm for men’s fashion https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/rich-mnisi-skirt-mens-fashion-twitter-homophobia/ Wed, 23 Jun 2021 11:28:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=903831 The Twitter streets are divided after award-winning fashion designer Rich Mnisi shared a picture of himself in a brown pleated mini skirt on Instagram on 21 June.

RICH MNISI IN THOSE MINI SKIRTS…

Rich Mnisi is known for their exorbitantly priced clothing that celebrities and influencers such as Somizi and Sarah Langa are known to show off. The designer behind the fashion brand seeks to push fashion boundaries. He seems to be moving into the gender-neutral side of fashion after recently posting a few pictures of himself rocking mini skirts.

The fashion designer remained lowkey on social media for a while and has now returned with a bang.

In the latest picture he is seen in a brown pleated miniskirt paired with a white long sleeve shirt, a Gucci pullover, a Christian Dior saddlebag, white socks, sneakers and sunglasses.

In another picture he is seen rocking a miniskirt in an all white look featuring a turtle neck, sleeveless puffer jacket and sneakers.

He also went school-boy themed with what seems to be a black leather skirt, white skirt and a black blazer.

TWEEPS WEIGH IN ON RICH MNISI

While many admired his fashion sense, non-binary outlook and praised his “stunning” legs, others seemed to think skirts aren’t for men.

Other Tweeps were strongly against men wearing skirts and expressed their brutally honest opinions as always.

While others thought these opinions were based on toxic masculinity and homophobia. Some Tweeps brought in traditional attired into the mix.

https://twitter.com/Colingwesu/status/1407651506631946241

This is not the first time Rich Mnisi had people talking, in February his R60 000 xibelani skirt from his Hiya Kaya ’21 collection sold out with Somizi buying one and influencer Sarah Langa modelling the skirt.

He also trended on social media after releasing a face mask for R2000. It is clear that the high-end fashion designer has a target market.

Balenciaga X Crocs: Would you wear stiletto Crocs at R14k a pair? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/fashion-and-beauty/balenciaga-stiletto-crocs/ Sat, 19 Jun 2021 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=900147 Luxury fashion house Balenciaga has collaborated with Crocs for their Spring 22 collection and one of their latest pieces is the stiletto cCoc which tweeps think aren’t all that.

WHAT IS A STILETTO CROC?

Paris-based fashion house Balenciaga, in collaboration with Crocs, debuted the stiletto Crocs as part of their their Spring 22 collection. The stiletto Crocs is a classic Crocs clog with a narrow heel attached and is available in black, grey and bright green shades and is sold at $1000 a pair equating to around R14 100.

This is not the first collaboration between the two brands, back in 2017 they debuted something similar, the platform Croc at $850 which equates to around R11 985. The collection sold out instantly and made it onto the “hottest product” list that year.

“It’s light, it is a one-piece sponge shape, and these types of techniques and materials work well with Balenciaga,” said Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia about the platform Crocs according to Good Things Guy.

Although many do not seem to fancy a pair of Crocs, purchases of the comfortable shoe surged during the pandemic. The shoe was seen on the Instagram feeds of celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Post Malone and Ban Bunny who have collaborated with the brand. Even Nicki Minaj was seen sporting an electric pink pair.

Shares in the company hit an all-time high in early June showing how popular it has actually been. However, Tweeps do not feel the same way about the stiletto Croc.

TWITTER REACTS TO STILETTO CROC

Twitter users are not holding back their thoughts on the new stiletto Croc with some going as far as calling it “fresh hell”. Here is what the Tweeps think.

Online video games can ‘help solve youth mental health issues’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/video-games-improve-mental-health-depression/ Thu, 17 Jun 2021 19:48:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=900053 Researchers at Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, have found that video games have the potential to provide low-cost, easy access, effective and stigma-free support to those in need.

They said video game access could be used where conventional therapies are not available because of cost or location – or in addition to traditional treatments for problems like anxiety.

Video games an alternative to improve mental health

“It is worth considering commercial video games as a potential alternative option for the improvement of various aspects of mental health globally,” Lero’s Dr Mark Campbell said.

Campbell led a team attached to the University of Limerick (UL)’s Health Research Institute and Physical Education & Sport Sciences department to publish their latest research paper in the journal JMIR Serious Games.

Easy access to video games

He said commercial video games are freely available to youngsters and there are an estimated 2.7 billion video gamers worldwide.

“The overall accessibility and pervasiveness of commercial video games within modern society position them as an invaluable means of reaching individuals with mental health disorders, irrespective of age and sex, and with limited access to mental health care, particularly relevant during the current COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

Many mental health disorders go untreated

Lead study author Magdalena Kowal of Lero and UL explained the financial and healthcare service burden of mental illness, which affects more than 14% of the world’s population, and stated that many go untreated.

“There is a heightened demand for accessible and cost-effective methods that prevent and facilitate coping with mental health illness. This demand has become exacerbated following the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent increase in mental health disorders, depression and anxiety in particular,” she said.

Virtual reality games suited for exposure therapy

They hope that virtual reality (VR) video games also have great potential in treating mental health issues – whether people are gamers or not.

“These are well-suited for the implementation of cognitive behavioural techniques for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in the future,” she explained.

“Given the immersive nature of VR technology and the controllability of the virtual environment, it could be particularly well-suited for use in exposure therapy.”

Middle Earth revisited: Epic ‘Lord of the Rings’ anime movie in the works https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/lord-of-the-rings-anime-the-war-of-the-rohirrim/ Mon, 14 Jun 2021 17:36:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=897142 New Line Cinema, the studio behind Peter Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, are teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation for the anime movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

The stand-alone film, directed by veteran anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, will explore and expand the story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, which is depicted in an epic battle sequence in 2002 movie The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and Helm Hammerhand, who it is named after.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set around 250 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and focuses on the legendary ninth King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand.

The film, which is said to be a “companion piece” to director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy, will delve into the life and “bloodsoaked times” of Hammerhand’s rule.

“All of us at New Line feel a deep affinity for the extraordinary world JRR Tolkien created, so the opportunity to dive back into Middle-earth with the team at Warner Bros Animation is a dream come true,” Carolyn Blackwood, Warner Bros Pictures Group chief operating officer, and Richard Brener, New Line Cinema president and chief creative officer, said in a statement, reports Variety.

‘Thrilling new way’ to depict Middle Earth saga

“Fans know Helm’s Deep as the stage for one of the greatest battles ever put to film and, with many of the same creative visionaries involved and the brilliant Kenji Kamiyama at the helm, we couldn’t be more excited to deliver a fresh vision of its history that will invite global audiences to experience the rich, complex saga of Middle Earth in a thrilling new way.”

‘The War of the Rohirrim’ fast-tracked

The filmmaking team is new to the franchise, based on the books of JRR Tolkien, but the project is intended to be connected to the six previous films, with Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote all six movies with Jackson and others, consulting on the feature. The project is not connected to Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series.

The War of the Rohirrim is being fast tracked by the studios so animation and voice casting are already underway.

Student survey: 13 000 youth share their COVID-19 challenges https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/youth-student-survey-covid-19-challenges-south-africa-blade-nzimande/ Mon, 14 Jun 2021 16:13:40 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=896989 More than 13 000 youth from higher education institutions around South Africa added their voice to a student survey that examined the challenges they faced while under lockdown when COVID-19 hit South African shores.

Blade Nzimande, the Higher Education Minister, officially released the findings of the study titled:  The impact of COVID-19 on students in the post-school education and training sector on Monday – a few days before the country marks Youth Day on 16 June.

The study conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council and Higher Health surveyed students on their food security during the lockdown; their access to accommodation; their ability to undertake remote learning and the impact of their mental health during the various stages of lockdown.

STUDENT SURVEY REVEALS STARTLING DIFFICULTIES STUDENTS ENCOUNTERED

Findings reveal that 40% residence or out-of-town students had to return home when a hard lockdown was announced in late March 2020, while 1% had no place to stay and 37% stayed with their parents while studying.

Food security was an area of concern for researchers who discovered that 28% of students couldn’t afford to buy food and 79% depended on their families for food. A total of 10% relied on food donations to feed themselves; 14% sometimes went hungry, 12% went the entire day without food and 36% ate less preferred foods during this time.

Remote learning was possible for students in private higher education institutions with 90% saying they were able to access virtual academic programmes. A total of 35% of students in the public education sector indicated they could not access remote learning; 15% of whom were from TVET colleges.

In terms of psychological distress, 37% from the 18–19-year age group; 28% between the 25-29 year age group and 29% of those aged 30-35 experienced psychological problems.

MINISTER REITERATES NEED FOR STUDENTS TO ADHERE TO COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

Reacting to research findings Nzimande said: “From the results we know that 53% thought they were at low risk of contracting COVID-19 and 15% perceived themselves as high risk. This reinforces that it is important for students to understand that they are in fact carriers of the virus and whilst they may be asymptomatic, they are at risk of transmitting to their parents and elderly grandparents.”

Blade Nzimande

Nzimande said the findings suggests students must be consistently reminded of to practice the basic prevention methods for COVID-19.

He empathised with students for the struggles they experienced particularly with food insecurity and accessing remote learning programme due to limited access to data. He applauded higher education institutions for the steps they took to ensure online mechanisms were in place to facilitate remote learning for its students.

He also commended students who volunteered to avail themselves to carry out programmes to assist in the fight against COVID-19. Nzimande praised the 12 000 youth volunteers who were trained by Higher Health to assist where needed over the past year.

‘Tears Run Dry’: AKA teases snippet of song dedicated to Nelli [listen] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/aka-teases-nelli-tembe-tears-run-dry-new-song-latest-listen/ Mon, 14 Jun 2021 10:57:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=896371 Rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA, took to social media to share a snippet of a new song titled Tears Run Dry which Tweeps believe is dedicated to his late fiancée, Anele “Nelli” Tembe.

The snippet was posted on the rapper’s Instagram story during the early hours of Saturday 12 June.

AKA BACKTRACKING ON ‘PISS ON YOUR GRAVE’?

This emotional song follows the backlash AKA received after he used Travis Scott’s Piss On Your Grave on his Instagram story last weekend which many thought was disrespectful as he had just lost his fiancée Nelli Tembe on 11 April when she plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town.

In the Instagram Story, AKA is seen smoking and dancing in his personal return to social media after taking time off from the public eye to mourn Tembe’s death. At the time, he handed over his social media accounts to his public relations team to handle.

https://twitter.com/LeratoLegoale/status/1401778990755495937

AKA took back control of his social media last week by going on a posting spree with pictures of himself and his new puppy named King Louie the 13th Forbes, nicknamed Mr Lou.

Mr Lou was set up with his own Instagram account which racked up more than 2 500 followers in just over a week.

‘TEARS RUN DRY’ FOR NELLI

The snippet of the song shared on AKA’s Instagram Story is titled Tears Run Dry where the rapper talks about how hard it is for him to live without his beloved and therefore it is safe to assume that the song is dedicated to Tembe.

AKA’s teaser of new music comes after his “top fan” and promoter Rubu Thulisa tweeted that AKA is back in the studio and Mpumalanga-born artist Oscar Mbo hinted that a collaboration was in the works.

The Mama I Made It hitmaker has previously been tied Drip Footwear through wearing their sneakers, but the R100 million partnership between his label, Family Tree Records, and the South African footwear brand is a whole different ball game.

Cassper and Drip Footwear: ‘Most significant partnership ever’

According to Drip Footwear CEO Lekau Sehoana, it is “the most significant’ partnership ever created between a non-athlete personality and an athleisure brand”.

“We are about to launch a series of products under our new wing, The Root of Fame with Cassper Nyovest. This partnership goes beyond music and sneakers, it’s a showcase of black excellence through the power of collaboration,” according to Drip Footwear’s Facebook page.

Cassper signs on the dotted line…

In a video posted to Nyovest’s Instagram, the rapper is seen signing the deal with Sehoana at a press conference held at The Leonardo in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 8 June.

The Amademoni hitmaker took to Twitter, in a series of posts to show his anticipation of what is yet to come off this “legacy deal”.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE R100 MILLION

In an interview on Podcast and Chill with MacG, Sehoana has provided some clarity on what the R100 million amount of the partnership entails.

“It’s just the products, we signed a contract worth R100 million of the products. If it is a sneaker or a T-shirt worth R2,000 we are going to make ones that are worth R100 million, up until that particular term ends,” he said.

Young adults: Less drinking ‘but increased depression’ due to pandemic https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/health-fitness/drinking-depression-young-adults-covid-19-pandemic/ Tue, 08 Jun 2021 18:22:55 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=892563 The COVID-19 pandemic helped reduce heavy drinking in young adults but increased rates of depression among women, a new study has found.

Researchers from McMaster University found that while the shutdown of bars and pubs decreased binge drinking, the psychological impact of the virus was apparent due to rising numbers of young adults becoming depressed.

Depression and anxiety increase among young women

The team analysed data from almost 500 people aged from 18 to 25, and observed a reduction in problematic drinking during the first few months of the pandemic, but found there was an increase in rates of depression and anxiety symptoms among young women.

Senior author James MacKillop said that the results showcased the “complexity of the pandemic”, and suggested the rise in mental health issues within the group could be down to restrictions on socialising.

“The study participants were young people, who typically drink in social settings. If you take away bars, restaurants, and group events, like parties, it’s not surprising that binge drinking in this group goes down too,” lead author Meenu Minhas added.

DRINKING A COPING MECHANISM

Among the study participants, young women showed a substantial increase in the odds of meeting the threshold for clinical depression, but a similar effect was not found in men.

High levels of stress, irritability and sadness – all related to the pandemic – were felt more strongly by females, and it was suggested that the lack of social support for young people amid the global crisis was to blame.

“Although certain public health measures were important in controlling the spread of the virus, the benefits of social support and interaction, which often act as buffers against the effects of stress, have also been reduced due to the pandemic,” MacKillop noted.

Soul sister Holly Rey leaves DJ Black Coffee’s stable amid GBV claims https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/holly-rey-leaves-black-coffee-soulistic-music-label-gbv/ Mon, 07 Jun 2021 15:22:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=891683 Award-winning singer Holly Rey has left DJ Black Coffee’s record label, Soulistic Music, following alleged gender-based violence (GBV) allegations by the world-renowned DJ’s estranged wife, Enhle Mbali.

A Sunday World article stated that Holly Rey, whose real name is Holly Wasserfall, also said that her decision to part ways with Black Coffee’s record label has also partly been influenced by her desire to  pave her independent music career path under her label, Rey Music.

Holly Rey set to follow independent music path

The Spend My Time hitmaker, who has been hailed as the next Tamara Dey and has been with Soulistic Music for less than a year, said she wants to grow independently and wants to avoid the negative press associated with the GBV claims.

She told Sunday World

“I left the record label earlier this year because I realised there was much more I can do as an independent artist, and then the scandal came through. I loved working at Soulistic Music, but with everything that is happening, I think it is best that I work on myself my own way.”

Better ‘business sense’ to distance from Black Coffee

The Sama award-winning musician said her move makes better business sense and she’s glad that she was able to release her single successfully and also promised her fans an EP later this year.

The Durban artist didn’t change her mind about leaving, even after DJ Black Coffee was found not guilty at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting his estranged wife on her birthday in their Sandton home this year.

Other musicians who are signed with Soulistic Music label, include Zakes Bantwini, Culoe De Song and DJ Thakzin.

Who is Holly Rey?

Apart from joining Black Coffee’s famous label, Holly Rey shot to fame as the first woman in 20 years to bag the 2019 Record of the Year Award at the SA Music Awards (Samas) after Brenda Fassie.

Holly Rey also shared the limelight with President Cyril Ramaphosa when she was caught “vosho-ing” on stage with him in 2019.

Black Coffee vs Enhle

DJ Black Coffee and the actress, Enhle Mbali were recently trending when Mbali suggested that the award-winning DJ intentionally didn’t pay their electricity bill which led to their electricity being cut off at her home.

The Rockville actress shocked her followers when she posted a picture of herself in the dark with a candle on her Instagram story with the caption: “We gonna shame the devil and enjoy the darkness. Me and my boys.”

‘Vogue’ cover star Malala Yousafzai on headscarves and McDonald’s https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/vogue-malala-yousafzai-interview-pakistan-nobel-peace-prize/ Sun, 06 Jun 2021 10:16:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=889060 Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai graces the cover of the esteemed British Vogue magazine for their July issue with an incredible story to tell.

WHO IS MALALA YOUSAFZAI?

Malala Yousafzai is a 23-year-old Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner at the tender age of 17 in 2014 after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban.

At the age of 11, Malala Yousafzai began campaigning for a woman’s right to education. In October 2012, a gunman shot Yousafzai while she was travelling home from school. After the incident, she continued to speak out on the importance of education and in 2013, she gave a speech to the United Nations (UN) and wrote a book titled I Am Malala.

“When it comes to people I admire, Malala Yousafzai is right at the top,” said editor-in-chief of British Vogue Edward Enninful.

MALALA EXCITED FOR MCDONALD’S IN UNIVERSITY

While attending university, the activist said that due to the incident she didn’t really spend time with people her own age, so she was excited for everything, including McDonald’s.

“I was excited about literally anything. Going to McDonald’s or playing poker with my friends or going to a talk or an event,” said Yousafzai to Vogue.

“(I have) never really been in the company of people my own age because I was recovering from the incident, and travelling around the world, publishing a book and doing a documentary, and so many things were happening,” she continued.

Since then she has completed her degree in philosophy, politics and economics at the Oxford University in England.

MALALA’S VOGUE COVER SHOOT

The cover is titled “the extraordinary life of Malala – survivor, activist, legend”, as she appears in a fiery red shirt and a matching headscarf by Stella McCartney.

The headscarf comes with a message, the 23-year-old states that for Pakistani girls a headscarf is often associated with oppression and patriarchy but she wants everyone to know that you can have both a voice and equality within your culture.

“It’s a cultural symbol for us Pashtuns, so it represents where I come from,” said Yousafzai to Vogue.

“And Muslim girls or Pashtun girls or Pakistani girls, when we follow our traditional dress, we’re considered to be oppressed, or voiceless, or living under patriarchy,” she continued.

“I want to tell everyone that you can have your own voice within your culture, and you can have equality in your culture,” she added.

The cover images were shot by artist Nick Knight. Here’s a look at the others.

Dua Lipa’s third album in the works

Meanwhile, fans can expect Dua’s third album to be “something completely different and at scale”.

The Hallucinate hitmaker released her chart-topping LP Future Nostalgia in March 2020 and, the prolific star – who continued the era with the release of the remix LP Club Future Nostalgia – is already steaming ahead with concepts for its follow-up.

‘Future Nostalgia’ is the ‘Terminator of albums’

Joe Kentish, the president of Warner Records UK, recently said of the continued success of Future Nostalgia: “It’s The Terminator of albums, it just cannot be stopped!

“Every time we think it’s down, another single pops off in another territory or on another platform. And her work ethic is legendary. We use her as an example to other artists at the label and I know her management company, Tap Music, do the same.”

Steaming ahead: Dua Lipa on a mission

Of her next studio effort, he added: “She was talking about album No 3 when we barely had No 2 done!. You’re half-expecting that she might want to take a break or go about things differently but she’s like ‘Right, what’s next?’ Her interests, her knowledge, her thirst to learn new things and to be in control of what she does just grows and grows.

“She’s taking time to fully realise the album conceptually, but her belief in herself and the belief that she can pull off something completely different and at scale has only grown.”

Dua didn’t stop at her star-studded remix LP, she also teamed up with rapper DaBaby on a new version of the album’s single Levitating and she dropped three new tracks on Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition; We’re Good, Not My Problem with JID and If It Ain’t Me.

Kylie Minogue, Miley Cyrus and FKA twigs

What’s more, the Grammy-winner put on the Studio 2054 live event in November and teamed up with Kylie Minogue on a remixed version of the disco icon’s track, ‘Real Groove’.

The IDGAF hitmaker also duetted with Miley Cyrus on Prisoner and teased a yet-to-be-released collaboration with FKA twigs, which they previewed a snippet of during the virtual gig.

‘Gully’: The plot

Three teens living in Los Angeles, all victims of extreme childhoods, wreak a hedonistic riot across the city over the course of 48 hours, unbound by societal norms. They take us on a rip-roaring ride of drugs and murder across the city. But when the rampage stops, the retribution begins.

It had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on 27 April 2019, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it has only been released today (4 June) in cinemas.
