In some cases, that might not be a bad thing.

Kaizer Chiefs’ search for strikers continues

With manager Nasreddine Nabi categorically ruling out moves for Fiston Mayele and Percy Tau the options keep getting thinner but maybe these two aren’t the right fit anyway.

Mayele is unproven in South Africa

Yes, 30-year-old Fiston Mayele has proved himself to be a lethal striker on the African continent but South Africa is a different kettle of fish. His track record is undeniably impressive; 14 goals and four assists in 25 Caf Champions League matches, and 54 goals under Nabi across two seasons with Young Africans. It’s impossible to argue against his calibre. However, the price tag and the massive wages should be a significant deterrent. Also, factor in that he’ll need time to settle into a new country and tactical philosophy. Before the end of next season, he’ll already be 31.

Nasreddine Nabi’s transfer wishlist: Who’s still missing?

Percy Tau presents the same issues

A month older than Mayele, moving for Tau would also be a massive risk. His wages are exorbitant and seem to blow Chiefs out of the water before negotiations begin. He reportedly pocketed R23.2m annually in the first year of his current deal with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Monthly, that’s roughly R1.93m a month. The annual figure could rise to R31m in the third year if he sees it out. The former Sundowns, Brighton and Anderlecht man is demanding a massive payout from Ahly to be released from his contract but then any buying club will need to shoulder a significant signing-on fee.

Betway Prem looms large

The Glamour Boys kick off the 2024-2025 season with a trip to Marumo Gallants. The promoted Limpopo side will be fired up, but then again so will former Gallants marksman Ranga Chivaviro who’s playing for his Amakhosi future.

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015 which was also their most recent piece of major silverware.

Nasreddine Nabi warns Kaizer Chiefs fans ahead of new season https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/nasreddine-nabi-warns-kaizer-chiefs-fans-ahead-of-new-season/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 03:31:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166857 Kaizer Chiefs’ new coach Nasreddine Nabi has made it clear to fans that he won’t say what they want to hear.

The 58-year-old Tunisian coach took over from Cavin Johnson last month following the club’s disappointing 2023/24 season. Having completed his assignment with Moroccan side FAR Rabat, Nabi brought four assistants to Naturena as he looks to transform the club’s fortunes.

Kaizer Chiefs have not won any silverware in nine years however Nasreddine Nabi is not making promises. The Soweto giants only have three trophies to fight for this campaign having failed to qualify for the MTN8.

Speaking to the media last month, the former Young African coach said it was important to be firm and honest with the management and supporters.

We need a very real strategy, we need to be honest with ourselves and our supporters,” said Nabi.

Nasreddine Nabi has already made five new signings at Kaizer Chiefs

“We have to go forward without any emotions, and with a lot of realism.

“When we have analysed what we have, and put a strategy together of how to drive the club forward … then we should get somewhere.

“I do not want to be making promises or making declarations. I won’t just be a populist, making fans hear what they want,” the Tunisan coach said as per Citizen.

Nasreddine Nabi spent three weeks with Kaizer Chiefs in Turkey during their pre-season. His first televised match in charge was a 4-0 defeat against Yanga FC last month in the Toyota Cup.

Nabi not making any promises but what should be his mandate?

Wild! GARAGE for sale for R2.2m in Cape Town’s Bantry Bay https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/cape-town-property-prices-listings-bantry-bay-grage/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:46:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166815 Cape Town is known for its astronomical property prices. But it seems a Bantry Bay garage selling for millions has taken the cake.

The listing has gone viral on social media.

BANTRY BAY GARAGE AND OTHER SHOCKING LISTINGS

In a property listing, a one-car garage in Cape Town’s affluent suburb of Bantry Bay has had social media users doing a double take.

The 18 square metre property – which measures the size of a single parking space – is located in a gated community on Victoria Road.

According to the estate agents, the space – priced at R2.2 million –  is “secure and sought after.” The minuscule space also comes with a R473 monthly levy.

On social media, X users were both shocked and amused at the listing.

@MasonwabeWeber: “Guaranteed someone is going to buy it, slap a bed and bucket in there and call it a “rustic Campsbay” stay on Airbnb.”

@KoketsoResane: “That Ferrari has to park somewhere.”

@DeanKietzmann: “What’s the view of the beach like?”

@L_N_E_N_E: “Cape Town’s real estate market is an April Fool’s joke that refuses to end.”

Other X users have shared a look at more bizarre property listings in Cape Town.

One includes a listing for a SINGLE ROOM rental in a Sea Point apartment for R33 000 per month. The rental would entail sharing a living space with the apartment’s owner.

Another included a listing of a 90-square-metre bachelor apartment in Woodstock, Cape Town, for almost R1 million. According to the description, the owner has “maximised space” by doubling a bookshelf as a pair of stairs leading to a bed located above the living and dining area.

WHY IS PROPERTY SO EXPENSIVE IN CAPE TOWN?

According to various estate agents, Cape Town locations like Sea Point, Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, and Green Point are highly sought after thanks to their proximity close to the beaches, business district, nightlife, and, of course, mountain views.

There is also the tourist factor of the city, which has a cosmopolitan population that has attracted foreign remote workers from around the world. International buyers – including many celebrities – are also responsible for lapping up many luxury properties in Cape Town and surrounding areas.

All these factors have resulted in high demand prices for properties skyrocketing.

According to Daily Investor, Cape Town is the most expensive city to live in on the African continent.

BusinessTech reveals that renting a two-bedroom apartment located in any of the above areas can easily cost R75 000 per month and above. Purchasing property in the area can range from tens to hundreds of millions of rands.

ARE PROPERTIES IN CAPE TOWN WORTH THE HEFTY PRICE TAG?

Keagan Dolly’s insight could revive Kaizer Chiefs trophy drought! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/keagan-dollys-insight-could-revive-kaizer-chiefs-trophy-drought/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:42:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166845 Keagan Dolly’s insight could revive Kaizer Chiefs trophy drought, as per Kick Off

For nearly a decade, Chiefs have struggled to claim silverware, and former midfielder Dolly sheds light on why this might be happening. Dolly, who departed the club in the off-season, believes that the Chiefs need a major overhaul to reignite their competitive edge. He identifies several key issues contributing to the club’s trophy drought, starting with the high turnover of players.

One major factor in the Chiefs’ failure to secure titles is the lack of a stable core squad. Dolly points out that every successful team has a consistent group of players, something the Amakhosi have lacked for years. “I’d probably look after the players a bit more, protect them from social media and what’s been said about them when things are not working out,” Dolly explained in an interview on 947’s MSW. The constant influx and exodus of players prevent the team from building the necessary cohesion and familiarity.

Unlocking potential: Key to Kaizer Chiefs’ revival

Dolly also highlights an intriguing phenomenon why players who were exceptional at their previous clubs struggle to perform at Kaizer Chiefs. He believes that the club’s environment does not sufficiently shield players from external pressures. “I’d probably, firstly, make them safe at the club, not add more pressure. I would make the environment where the players themselves feel that they are home and they are working together,” Dolly said. He advocates for a nurturing environment that allows players to integrate gradually. Instead of being thrust into the limelight too soon.

Chiefs’ failure to qualify for the MTN8 cup competition underlines the urgency for change. This could have been their first chance at silverware this season, highlighting the pressing need for a strategic overhaul.

Major move: ‘Tera’ Maliwa joins Kaizer Chiefs

In a bid to turn things around, Kaizer Chiefs have made a strategic hiring decision by bringing in Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns. This esteemed scout’s arrival is set to transform the club’s scouting and recruitment processes. Enhancing their ability to attract top talent and potentially reignite their pursuit of trophies.

By addressing these critical issues and leveraging new talent. Kaizer Chiefs could be on the path to ending their lengthy trophy drought.

Stay tuned with The South African for more updates. As Keagan Dolly gives some insight, as to how the sleeping giant can get back to the top.

Kaizer Chiefs lose 3-0 at FNB https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-lose-3-0-at-fnb/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:20:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166841 Nasreddine Nabi’s Kaizer Chiefs have been playing plenty of friendly matches behind closed doors. The latest was on Thursday afternoon.

KAIZER CHIEFS LOSE 3-0 TO TS GALAXY

With a little over two weeks left before the start of the Betway Premiership, Amakhosi took on Sead Ramovic’s Rockets at the FNB Stadium. The result was a 3-0 win over the Soweto giants, thanks to goals from Sphiwe Mahlangu, Puso Dithejane, and Thokozani Sibanyoni.

LEONARDO CASTRO WARNS GASTON SIRINO

Kaizer Chiefs supporters are super excited about Gaston Sirino at Amakhosi. Leonardo Castro has meanwhile warned the Uruguyan.

Finding out about Sirino’s move, Castro, who played at Sundowns before switching to Naturena, has revealed his warning to Sirino.

“Moving to Chiefs is all part of the job, which has come after a successful stay at Sundowns, where they always have a lot of players,” Castro told KickOff.

“I have told Gaston the truth about Chiefs, and he knows it. Chiefs is a club that will treat you well and Gaston has already felt it.

“Truth is that if Chiefs want to play with youngsters, then it is going to be difficult to compete against [the] experience and quality of Sundowns, who are competing in North Africa,” the Colombian added.

“You cannot be celebrating kasi football players at Chiefs because that is for Sunday League football and not professional soccer.

“Soccer is about being quick in making decisions and some of the players need to have the hunger and desire to see themselves moving beyond Chiefs,” Castro continued.

“Siyabonga Ngezana and Njabulo Blom were also listening and worked hard to move it abroad, but other players are still just enjoying being there even when not playing regularly.

“There are players with talent but no ambition at Chiefs. I was there at Chiefs and was honest about this and with the coach that they have now [Nasreddine Nabi], their fans deserve happiness now,” the Colombian added.

“It still hurts me that I never won trophies at Chiefs after losing the league title in the last game and lost the Champions League final,” Castro concluded.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ FIRST FIVE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP FIXTURES

Pre-season will eventually end for Amakhosi. With around two weeks to go, here’s a look at Kaizer Chiefs’ first five fixtures for the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership.

The Soweto giants will start the season on 14 September in Bloemfontein. It is where Marumo Gallants have decided to play their home games at the Toyota Stadium this season.

Match day two will see Amakhosi host a home game against Stellenbosch FC on 22 September. The third game will be a trip to Durban’s AmaZulu on 25 September, before the fearsome champions Mamelodi Sundowns visit the Glamour Boys at the FNB Stadium on 28 September.

Another loss for Kaizer Chiefs as top target signs new contract https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/another-loss-for-kaizer-chiefs-as-top-target-signs-new-contract/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:19:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166826 It appears as if Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on another target after Riaan Hanamub penned a new contract with AmaZulu.

Amakhosi have been looking to sign the 29-year-old Namibia international after failing to capture Stellenbosch star player Fawaaz Basadien. Chiefs are currently looking to strengthen their defence, especially in the left-back position.

Kaizer Chiefs target extend contract with Usuthu

Usuthu announced last week that they were willing to sell Hanamub to Chiefs but but for a good price. According to GOAL, Amakhosi offered AmaZulu R3 million for the Namibian star but the KZN outfit turned the offer, demanding at least R10 million.

On Thursday, AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed that the Kaizer Chiefs target signed a new contract.

“Yes, he has signed a new contract with us, which is for a further three years,” Zungu told SABC Sport.

“We never received an offer in writing. This contract (for Hanamub) was something already in the pipeline.”

Kaizer Chiefs target Riaan Hanamub signs a new contract with AmaZulu.

With Hanamub having penned a new deal, Kaizer Chiefs will now have to look elsewhere. Zungu has made it clear that the club will not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave.

“We are not a team that stands in the way of players, if he comes to us and says he wants to leave, we let him go,” Zungu said on Isolezwe. Before signing a new contract, Hanamub declared his desire to stay with Usuthu despite Kaizer Chiefs rumours.

Who should Chiefs sign next with Hanamub out of the picture?

Former Orlando Pirates star goes back to school to study law https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/former-orlando-pirates-star-goes-back-to-school-to-study-law/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:03:36 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166812 No doubt former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thandani ‘Bibo’ Ntshumayelo had a colourful stint with the Soweto giants up until his four-year ban that took a toll on his career.

FORMER ORLANDO PIRATES STAR THANDANI NTSHUMAYELO’S CAREER

He started his youth career with Black Swallows. However, he later switched the floor to SuperSport United in 2005.

In 2009, Thandani Ntshumayelo joined the SuperSport United senior team. After two seasons, the midfielder joined Orlando Pirates in 2012.

He was part of the star-studded squad of Orlando Pirates that had a host of stars, including Oupa Manyisa, Bennie McCarthy, Andile Jali, Happy Jele and the late Senzo Meyiwa.

At the time, he was 23 years old at the time and was reportedly earning R275 000 per month, according to Transfer Markt.

FOOTBALL BAN

After making over 70 appearances in January 2016, Thandani Ntshumayelo tested positive for a banned substance and was handed a four-year ban from football.

Reports have it that traces of cocaine were found in his system. Against the ban, Thandani Ntshumayelo lost nearly everything he held dearly. The friends. The money. The adulation. The game.

“Honestly, I felt so alone at the time. I had lost people I thought were my friends. I even lost hope of ever playing again,” said the star during a 2018 interview.

He suffered from severe depression and almost took his life. However, on appeal, the ban was reduced to two years.

Thandani Ntshumayelo returned to football in 2019. However, it was never the same, and this was one of the reasons why he retired early.

In 2023, Thandani Ntshumayelo retired from football. During one of his interviews, the star said, “I rushed going back [to football], that’s why maybe something didn’t go well.

BIBO: ‘I WENT BACK TO SCHOOL’

However, months after his retirement, the rumour mill had it that he was totally unrecognisable, leaving many trying to connect the dots about his whereabouts and what he has been up to.

Little is known about his occupation. Thandani Ntshumayelo recently revealed that he is now pursuing law.

Thandani Ntshumayelo is pursuing a Higher Certificate in Law at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Speaking to Far Post two months ago he said, “I went back to school, I’m studying again, I’m doing LLB High qualification. I’m studying Law now. I’m studying at Unisa, started this year.”

After hanging his boots, former Orlando Pirates star Thandani ‘Bibo’ Ntshumayelo returned to school and is currently studying law.

Where is Joslin Smith? Psychic reveals new ‘heartbreaking’ details [video] https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/joslin-smith-found-update-latest-news-kandis-starr-maryke-watch/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 18:15:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166406 Psychic Kandis Starr has shared what she believes are more heartbreaking details regarding the disappearance of Saldanha Bay girl Joslin Smith.

The six-year-old went missing from her home in the Middelpos informal settlement in the community of Diazville on 19 February.

Joslin’s mother, Kelly Smith, her partner, Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis, and two others have been charged with kidnapping and child trafficking. They are currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, the little girl is yet to be found.

KANDIS STARR ‘CHANNELS JOSLIN SMITH’: DISTURBING DETAILS

Kandis Starr, who specialises in paranormal justice, has expressed a keen interest in Joslin Smith’s disappearance. Speaking to The South African, Kandis previously revealed that her goal is to help authorities find missing children.

In multiple supernatural sessions, the US medium has shared clues about what she believes happened to Joslin, whom she believes is dead.

Her latest spirit box session, sees Kandis requested her “spirit guides” help her “connect” to “Joslin Smith.”

In it, she communicates with the voice of a little girl, whom she believes is Joslin.

The voice name-drops the four accused, including her mother, and claims that she was abused and possibly used for witchcraft. The name frequently mentions the town of “Saldanha.”

It also mentions that her mother is pregnant with another baby.

Later, Kandis Starr gives an energy reading using an electromagnetic pod used in paranormal investigations.

The sessions sees a “siren” go off when the “spirit of Joslin Smith” positively responds to questions.

Such questions include:

“Did your mother leave you with men that hurt you?”

“Did your mother know these men were hurting you?”

“Has your mother ever hurt you?”

Take a look…

TIKTOKER MARYKE ALSO HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

Meanwhile, TikToker Maryke Erasmus – who Gayton McKenzie has sued after she claimed he was involved in Joslin Smith’s kidnapping – has also shared an update.

Speaking from a “divine intervention,” the  Laingsburg woman believes that the missing girl is alive and “on her way home.”

She said in a video: “We will finally see her soon.”

Broos gives TWO reasons why Percy Tau failed to make the cut https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/bafana-bafana/broos-gives-two-reasons-why-percy-tau-failed-to-make-the-cut/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 17:58:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166819 Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained why he omitted striker Percy Tau in his squad.

The 72-year-old named his 23-man squad to play Uganda and South Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Tau has had a tough season with Al Ahly and also struggled to find his form in the national team.

In the past nine months, the star has received criticism from fans. Broos admitted leaving Percy Tau was a tough decision but explained two reasons the striker was left out.

“Percy Tau…It was not an easy decision for me to not select him but there were two things I took into account. First of all, Percy receives a lot of criticism at the moment when he plays for Bafana Bafana so I try to protect him and support him,” Broos told SABC Sport.

Broos on Percy Tau’s form at Al Ahly

“For the game against Algeria, he wasn’t there but then you saw the game against Nigeria again it was the same thing. So they don’t like him for the moment and they expect too much from him.”

Since Broos took over, Percy Tau has been one of his trusted players. Since this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, the 30-year-old has never been the same, failing to find the net in seven previous matches.

“Secondly, his situation at Al Ahly at the moment is not clear. There are rumours that he is going to leave, and that there is a problem with the transfer fee, since the beginning of August, he only played 17 minutes. The situation is not great and I was a bit afraid with all that…Percy at the moment is not ready.”

With Pery Tau failing to make the team, Broos has decided to go with Iqraam Rayners and Lyle Foster upfront.

“We need the players that are ready, not only physically but mentally,” said the Bafana coach.

Will Tau rediscover his form?

Furry Fun Fact of the Day: How do hamsters change the colour of their urine? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/furry-fun-fact-of-the-day-how-do-hamsters-change-the-colour-of-their-urine/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 17:19:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166817 Welcome, fellow pet enthusiasts, to the Furry Fun Fact of the Day!

How do hamsters change the colour of their urine?

Hamsters have a unique ability to change the color of their urine based on their diet. This is due to the presence of pigments, such as beta-carotene, in certain foods. When hamsters consume foods rich in these pigments, their bodies absorb them and excrete them through their urine, causing it to change color. Carrots are a particularly common food that can lead to orange or even red urine in hamsters. This fascinating quirk of their biology is a testament to their adaptability and the intricate relationship between diet and bodily functions.

Finally, South Africans are reminded that the closing date for individual taxpayers to submit their tax returns is 21 October 2024, while the deadline for provisional taxpayers is 20 January 2025.

How to help your pet cope with separation anxiety https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/pets/how-to-help-your-pet-cope-with-separation-anxiety/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 16:00:22 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166786 Separation anxiety is a common problem among pets, especially dogs. It can manifest in various behaviors, including excessive barking, destructive chewing, whining, and even house soiling. If your pet is exhibiting signs of separation anxiety, here are some strategies to help them cope:

1. Gradual Exposure to Separation Anxiety:

  • Short absences: Start by leaving your pet alone for short periods, gradually increasing the duration as they become comfortable. This allows them to gradually adjust to being alone.
  • Positive associations: Make leaving a positive experience by rewarding your pet with treats or praise before and after your absence. This helps them associate your departure with positive outcomes.

2. Crate Training:

  • Safe space: A crate can provide a safe and secure space for your pet. Ensure the crate is comfortable and not too small. It should be a place where your pet feels safe and protected.
  • Positive reinforcement: Use positive reinforcement techniques to associate the crate with good things, such as treats and playtime. This will help your pet see the crate as a positive space.

3. Mental Stimulation to Reduce Separation Anxiety:

  • Puzzle toys: Keep your pet’s mind engaged with puzzle toys that require them to work to get treats. These toys can help prevent boredom and anxiety.
  • Interactive play: Spend quality time playing interactive games with your pet, such as fetch or hide-and-seek. This will help strengthen your bond and provide mental stimulation.

4. Professional Help for Separation Anxiety:

  • Veterinarian consultation: A veterinarian can rule out any underlying medical conditions and provide advice on behavior modification. They can also recommend appropriate treatments if necessary.
  • Dog trainer: A qualified dog trainer can offer personalized guidance and training techniques to address separation anxiety. They can provide tailored advice and support based on your pet’s specific needs.

5. Environmental Enrichment:

  • Familiar objects: Leave familiar objects, such as your clothes or a blanket, with your pet to provide comfort. These objects can help them feel more connected to you even when you’re away.
  • Routine: Maintain a consistent daily routine to help your pet feel secure and predictable. A regular schedule can provide a sense of stability and reduce anxiety.

Remember, patience and consistency are key when addressing separation anxiety. By implementing these strategies and working with a professional if needed, you can help your pet overcome their anxiety and enjoy a happier, healthier life.

SARS hits back at Sunday Times profile-hijacking article https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/business-news-and-finance/sars-hits-back-at-sunday-times-profile-hijacking-article-edward-kieswetter/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 15:20:34 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166771 The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has noted its concern at an article published in last weekend’s Sunday Times regarding the hijacking of taxpayers’ profiles.

SARS has ‘extensively investigated the alleged crime’

In a release on its website, SARS wrote that under normal circumstances it is prohibited by Chapter 6 of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011 from divulging confidential taxpayer information.

However, since the taxpayer has authorised that its information be published in the article, SARS will clarify the matter.

SARS has extensively investigated the alleged crime with the sole purpose of uncovering any internal irregularities or alleged complicity by SARS staff that may have compromised the systems of the organisation.

SARS has over the years built internationally recognised and user-friendly systems to make it easy and simple for taxpayers to comply with their legal obligations.

These systems include built-in oversight of each transaction to safeguard taxpayer information and ensure internal accountability.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter said: “SARS has investigated this matter and we have found that no negligence or liability that can be imputed to SARS, meaning that SARS can therefore not be held liable for the criminal action reported by the Sunday Times.

“SARS will assist the company and all law enforcement agencies in any investigations that must follow to uncover the source of this tax crime,” Commissioner Kieswetter said.

He added that the crime of profile hijacking pointed to pervasive cybercrime with global links.

The sophistication of this type of crime is constantly evolving and SARS, like all other financial institutions are under constant threat due to international cybercrime syndicates.

Enhancements have been implemented

SARS has invested significantly in its technological infrastructure to combat this phenomenon.

SARS is continuously working on how to enhance its processes to authorise taxpayers when bank details are changed.

Some of the enhancements that have been implemented, include Multi-factor Authentication, strengthening password rules and biometric authentication.

Apart from this SARS is constantly assessing its own systems to identify system weaknesses to ensure that we mitigate any form of risk.

This will mean working more intensively with other parties such as banks.

Finally, Commissioner Kieswetter said: “One of our key strategic objectives is to build public trust and confidence in the organisation, which was lost during the years of state capture. SARS has made great progress in this area and will certainly not want to lose the ground gained through criminal activity, whether it’s done from inside or outside the organisation.”

The enquiry underway by the Office of Tax Ombudsman (OTO) to investigate incidents of profile hijacking is welcomed by SARS.

SARS is cooperating with OTO and looks forward to the recommendations that will be made on how best to combat the scourge of profile hijacking.

All Blacks coach questions whether Rassie can match his breakdancing skills! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/all-blacks-coach-questions-whether-rassie-can-match-his-breakdancing-skills/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 15:14:21 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166758 All Blacks coach Scott Robertson says it remains to be seen if Rassie Erasmus has the necessary rhythm to emulate his breakdance celebrations.

The Springboks and All Blacks are just days away from an epic showdown at Ellis Park and there has been no shortage of barbs traded back and forth between the two nations.

The Springboks announced their star-studded lineup for this Test on Tuesday, while the All Blacks named their team on Thursday morning.

The Springboks have since changed their team, with the inclusion of Eben Etzebeth on the bench after he overcame an injury scare, while the big talking point from the All Blacks team is the selection of Sam Cane in the starting XV.

WHO’S THE BETTER DANCER – RAZOR OR RASSIE?

Both coaches have great respect for each other, and are known for their unique personalities, with Robertson fondly renowned as a celebratory breakdancer with the Crusaders.

During a press conference this week, the All Blacks coach was reminded that perhaps the one thing that Erasmus can’t do, is breakdance. Responding with a smile and a chuckle, he commented: “That’s a good point. We’ll have to see what rhythm he’s got.”

Why Kaizer Chiefs should give this defender a chance, says Spurs coach https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/why-kaizer-chiefs-should-give-this-defender-a-chance-says-spurs-coach/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 15:01:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166675 Cape Town Spurs assistant coach Vasili Manousakis says Kaizer Chiefs should give defender Rushwin Dortely a chance.

The 22-year-old signed with Amakhosi last month from Spurs. Having captain Bafana Bafana at Cosafa Cup, the young defender brings calm and leadership to the Chiefs side that is short of confidence.

He along with Inacio Miguel and Bongani Sam are the only defenders Amakhosi bought so far. Manousakis believes the defender will thrive at Kaizer Chiefs if given a chance.

“I’m very proud of him and they (Chiefs) are getting an absolutely astute professional player on and off the pitch. I think that number one, is the work and dedication he puts in. He’s naturally talented,” said Manousakis as per The Citizen

“He’s still young and he can play at left centre back and left back because he’s so versatile. He has pace, strength, and height. He captained Bafana Bafana at the Cosafa Cup and that talks about his leadership qualities. That is what Chiefs are getting and if they give him a chance, they will be happy with every cent they have spent.”

Kaizer Chiefs new defender Rushwin highly praised by ex-coach

Amakhosi only kick off their season next month and it remains to be seen if Dortely could force his way into the starting eleven.

“He loves to score, especially in set-pieces when he gets himself up there. Physically, he has tremendous aerial powers and has an incredible strike on him if he gets near the box. He loves a goal and he sometimes thinks that he’s a striker – he’s not but he’s a great kid and has a fantastic future ahead of him,” he explained.

“The moment he does that then he should not have any worries about the pressure. He’s a good player and he needs to have crocodile skin and be thick-skinned and turn himself away from the noise and focus on football.”

The defender still has age on his side and is the only Kaizer Chiefs player in Hugo Broos’ Bafana team.

How good is Rushwin?

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos praises Kaizer Chiefs’ new boss! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/bafana-bafana-coach-hugo-broos-praises-kaizer-chiefs-new-boss/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:49:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166748 Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos recently shared his candid thoughts on Kaizer Chiefs’ new head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, following a chance encounter. Broos, surprised to discover that Nabi was living in the same building as him, quickly expressed his admiration for the former AS FAR coach.

“When I came back from Belgium, I didn’t know he was living in the same building as me,” Broos recounted as quoted by FARPost

“Someone from Kaizer Chiefs came to me and said, ‘Coach, the coach [of Kaizer Chiefs] wants to speak to you’. He was sitting there, and he was drinking coffee.” This unexpected meeting led to a positive exchange, with Broos praising Nabi’s coaching abilities. “I think he’s a very good coach,” Broos said. “I think when you see what’s happening at Chiefs, it’s a different thing.”

Kaizer Chiefs’ busy transfer window and Nabi’s leadership

Kaizer Chiefs have been active in the transfer market, aiming to bolster their squad with several key acquisitions for the upcoming season. The club has signed Miguel Inacio from Petro de Luanda, former Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino, Bafana Bafana defender Rushwin Dortley, Bongani Sam from Orlando Pirates, and Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy. Broos believes Nabi’s assertive nature will play a crucial role in his success at Chiefs. “He wants what he wants,” Broos observed. “It’s maybe a little bit easier for him to achieve that in Chiefs. Because it’s not easy to be a coach of Chiefs. And I think it’s not so easy for a South African coach to slam on the table and say, ‘I want that’.”

Broos is hopeful about the future of Kaizer Chiefs under Nabi’s guidance. “It’s not normal that a team like Chiefs is seven or eight in the league. It’s not good for South African football.” He anticipates a competitive season with Chiefs potentially challenging for the title. Alongside top teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, and Stellenbosch FC. “This is a big progression that happens for South African football and not the dominance of one team like we’ve seen in the last [seven years],” Broos concluded.

Chiefs’ 2024 season opener

Kaizer Chiefs will kick off their new campaign on September 14 against Marumo Gallants at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. As Nasreddine Nabi begins his tenure with the Glamour Boys. He will be eager for a strong start to the new Betway Premiership season.

Stay tuned  with The South African for more updates as Bafana Bafana coach shows great appreciation for Nabi.

MK Party’s Manyi scolds Ramaphosa in Parliament: Stop mocking Hlophe! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/mk-party-manyi-ramaphosa-parliament-anc-impeached-judge-hlophe/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:39:18 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166666 Mzwanele Manyi, uMkhonto weSizwe’s new chief whip, wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to stop adding salt to John Hlophe’s wounds.

During a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly on Thursday afternoon, Manyi rose on a point of order and excoriated Ramaphosa for referring to Hlophe as “judge”.

Manyi vs Ramaphosa in National Assembly

“We have a president, who was part of an impeachment process, that now continues to mock our party leader here in Parliament.

“The president cannot continue to keep mocking our party leader as a judge when he knows that he participated in a process to unfairly impeach him,” Manyi said in the House.

Ramaphosa, moments earlier, said “honourable judge” when answering a question posed by Hlophe, the MK Party leader in Parliament.

“He impeaches him on the one side and mocks him on the other. That cannot be allowed,” Manyi said.

Ramaphosa was seemingly contrite in response to Manyi’s complaint, apologising for addressing Hlophe as “judge”.

“I would like to say to honourable Manyi and honourable Hlophe that if my reference to the title is offensive, I apologise and I withdraw,” Ramaphosa said.

Background into ‘judge’ issue

Former Western Cape judge president Hlophe was impeached by members of Parliament (MPs) in February after he was found guilty of gross misconduct by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). MPs voted 305 in favour versus 27 against.

A month later, Ramaphosa hammered the final nail in Hlophe’s career, formally removing him from judicial office.

“The president accordingly removed Judge President Mandlakayise Hlophe of the Western Cape Division of the High Court from judicial office following the National Sssembly resolution to remove Judge Hlophe as stipulated in section 177 (1) (b) of the Constitution,” Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said in a statement at the time.

The removal meant Hlophe lost the title of “judge” and a guaranteed salary, plus benefits, for life.

John Hlophe: Journey to impeachment

Trouble started for Hlophe in 2008 when he was accused by Constitutional Court (ConCourt) justices Chris Jafta and Bess Nkabinde of trying to influence them over a case involving former president Jacob Zuma, which was before the ConCourt for consideration.

Eleven ConCourt justices lodged a complaint after Jafta and Nkabinde complained that Hlophe “had visited them separately in their chambers to discuss pending judgments” involving corruption cases against Zuma, reported TimesLIVE.

They complained that he had improperly attempted to influence the outcome of the matter in favour of Zuma.

Fast forward to April 2021, when “a tribunal inquiry found Hlophe guilty of gross misconduct, a decision upheld by the JSC [without the parliamentarians] in August 2021”, reports Judges Matter.

Is Ramaphosa mocking Hlophe or is Manyi overreacting?

Kaizer Chiefs: Bad news for Castillo, club gives up on Fiston Mayele https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-international-star-dumped-club-moves-from-mayele/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:20:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166090 Kaizer Chiefs have to improvise with their major striker targets that are unattainable. There’s also bad news for Edson Castillo.

Castillo is out in the cold for Venezuela and Kaizer Chiefs

30-year-old midfield dynamo Edson Castillo made his debut for La Vinotinto in June 2021. That’s almost three years and three months ago. In that time, he’s only collected nine caps. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduce that Edson Castillo isn’t a key part of the Venezuela setup. He wasn’t in their Copa América squad and isn’t part of the latest squad to face Bolivia and Uruguay. His last competitive action was in November 2023 when he played only 11 minutes across TWO World Cup qualifiers. Before that, the last sniff of game time he got was in October 2021 when he got 25 minutes against Brazil in a World Cup qualifier. Is this a blessing in disguise for Chiefs though? Castillo has battled to reproduce the form he showed at the start of his tenure at Naturena. With international distractions and travel issues off the table., perhaps he can flourish again.

Is Mzise the answer for Chiefs?

After a long and fruitless pursuit of 30-year-old Congolese marksman Fiston Mayele, it seems as though Chiefs have identified a younger alternative. 20-year-old Tanzania and Yanga striker Clement Mzise has a solitary cap for his country. He also has significantly lower wage demands than the coveted Mayele, not to mention he’d command a transfer fee that’s a fraction of Mayele’s.

The Betway Premiership transfer window shuts on 20 September.

Kaizer Chiefs raid Sundowns to beef up their technical team https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-raid-sundowns-to-beef-up-their-technical-team/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:17:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166723 Kaizer Chiefs have appointed Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa as their new Head of Scouting and Recruitment. He was with Sundowns for nine years.

Kaizer Chiefs beef up their technical team

After nine successful years with Sundowns, Thembela Maliwa has swapped Chloorkop for Naturena and become the new head of Scouting and Recruitment.

What Maliwa said via the club’s official website:

“We all know what a big, great Club this is. I am really happy to be here,”

“I am here to try to take the Club to another level in terms of scouting and recruitment. My plan is to identify and bring in the players that will take Amakhosi back to the glory days.”

What did Kaizer Jr say?

“The importance of getting recruitment right cannot be overestimated. Identifying and procuring players with the right profile to fit our process is key to success and with Tera onboard, I am very confident that his wealth of knowledge and experience in the field will add value to our organisation and ultimately strengthen the team,” said Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr.

“We welcome him to Kaizer Chiefs and look forward to working with him.”

Bafana Bafana squad includes Kaizer Chiefs star Dortley

One player who Chiefs have recently recruited is Rushwin Dortley. He’s the only Amakhosi star in the final 23-man group. Bruce Bvuma and Spiwe Msimango were in the preliminary squad but haven’t made the final cut. He’s still only 22, but Dortley is a massive prospect. He’s in the strange situation where he’s highly likely to make his full Bafana debut before pulling on a Chiefs jersey for the first time, with Afcon qualifiers on 06 and 10 September against Uganda and South Sudan. This guy has unique and coveted attributes, including a superb left foot and ball-playing ability.

  • Chiefs vs Sundowns – Saturday, 28 September, FNB Stadium, 15:00
  • SuperSport United vs Chiefs – Saturday, 26 October, Lucas Moripe Stadium, 17:30

Will Maliwa recruit the right players for Chiefs?

Orlando Pirates new star draws English interest! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/orlando-pirates-new-star-draws-english-interest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:16:42 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166722 Orlando Pirates new star draws English interest after half a season, according to Soccer Laduma.

After only half a season with Orlando Pirates, midfielder Thalente Mbatha has already captured the attention of European clubs. Insiders reveal that two teams have shown interest in the former SuperSport United star, including a notable club from the English Championship, which has expressed strong interest.

The buzz around Mbatha began following his impressive performances during the pre-season in Spain. Initially, three clubs inquired about the KwaZulu-Natal-born midfielder, but now the primary interest comes from a Championship club. “It all started when they came back from the pre-season in Spain. There were actually three teams at first which showed interest in him, but for now, I can tell you that the main one is from the Championship. Those ones have even inquired about him and could soon make a follow-up,” said the source. The potential selection for the Bafana Bafana squad could further boost his chances of moving to Europe, although the exact club remains undisclosed.

Pirates’ stance on Mbatha and Mabasa amidst rumours

Despite the European interest, a second source indicates that Orlando Pirates are unlikely to part ways with Mbatha at this stage. “You see, as for Mbatha and Tshegofatso Mabasa, the club is not ready to release or sell them at this time. They are part of the team’s backbone going forward, and both the technical team and management want to have them in the team as they fight to win trophies, mainly the league and go far in the CAF Champions League. So, yes, I can tell you there is interest, but letting him go will only happen if the money is really good,” the source explained.

In related news, Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa, previously linked to moves to Romania and Mamelodi Sundowns, is now drawing significant interest from a North African club. Sources close to Mabasa and Pirates reveal that this North African team has been closely monitoring his performance and is preparing to make an offer. The club’s officials recently watched Mabasa play against Disciples FC during the CAF Champions League second leg at Orlando Stadium. “They have been looking at his progress for some time now. They have been monitoring him and his performance and are happy about it,” said the source. The North African club’s name remains confidential to avoid disrupting the ongoing process.

Transfer strategy and future prospects

As both Thalente Mbatha and Tshegofatso Mabasa attract interest from European and North African clubs, Orlando Pirates face critical decisions regarding their future. The club’s ability to retain these key players will play a crucial role in their quest for domestic and continental success.

Stay tuned  with The South African for more updates as Orlando Pirates new star shines bright enough for British suitors to see.

Khanyi Mbau BEFORE plastic surgery: Images go viral https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/local-celebs/khanyi-mbau-before-plastic-surgery-photos-instagram-latest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 13:37:22 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166703 Khanyi Mbau has faced significant backlash from South Africans, who’ve accused her of being obsessed with plastic surgery. Some have even shared images of the TV personality before she had professional work done on her face and body.

The posts come hours after the socialite revealed that she’d had another procedure done in her quest to maintain her youthful appearance.

Khanyi lives in Dubai with her boyfriend, Kudzai Mushonga, and is known for her love of plastic surgery and skin bleaching.

KHANYI MBAU CLAPS BACK AT CRITICISM

In an Instagram post, Khanyi Mbau vlogged about her experience undergoing another invasive plastic surgery operation.

This time around, it was a blepharoplasty – a procedure that tightens and removes loose skin around the eyes. She had also had a subnasal lift lift, which lifts and tightens the skin around the mouth and nose.

In another post, she revealed that she was in recovery but enjoying the “five-star treatment” of her medical clinic. She also took the opportunity to clap back at critics who claimed she was now “unrecognisable.”

One follower asked, “How will Capitec recognise you?” Khanyi responded, ” Investec knows my voice.” She also clapped back at another who claimed she would no longer resemble her passport image.

On the X app, South Africans have been posting pics of a younger Khanyi Mbau before her plastic surgery and skin bleaching.

Take a look…

WHAT MEDICAL PROCEDURES HAS SHE DONE?

Over the years, Khanyi Mbau has had the following plastic surgery procedures done:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Nose job
  • Liposuction and body sculpting
  • Fillers, threads, and botox
  • Skin lightening
  • Veneers and surgery to “push back” her gums.
  • Hair implants

Jacob Zuma and Thales: Arms deal case hits another snag https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/politics/jacob-zuma-thales-arms-court-case-mk-party-latest-news/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:50:39 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166447 Former president Jacob Zuma returned to the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg for a pre-trial hearing on his arms deal case with French arms trader Thales.

Zuma and Thales face charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering. Zuma is alleged to have received 783 suspicious payments to the tune of R1.2 million from his financial advisor Shabir Shaik.

JACOB ZUMA AND THALES MATTER BACK IN COURT

Zuma and Thales were first charged in 2005, but the case was later struck from the roll. In 2007, it was reinstated, but in 2009, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew the charges.

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) overturned that decision, and in 2018, the case was reinstated again. The trial officially got underway in May 2021 when Zuma pleaded not guilty, Eyewitness News reported.

On Thursday, Zuma was flanked by uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party newly-appointed national organiser Floyd Shivambu and former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko as he arrived. Former National Freedom Party (NFP) secretary-general Canaan Mdletshe was also at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg to support Zuma.

In March this year Zuma lost his court bid to have state prosecutor advocate Billy Downer removed from his corruption trial.

Zuma had argued that involving Downer in the matter would infringe his right to a fair trial.

Chili said he was not convinced that Downer’s status as lead prosecutor on the case would prejudice Zuma and violate his right to a fair trial.

Zuma’s legal representative advocate Dali Mpofu, citing various cases, said that Zuma was entitled to those reasons so that he could appeal his decision properly, IOL reported.

On the other hand, Downer argued that this was the third time the matter was set down for pre-trial and urged Judge Nkosinathi Chili to go ahead.

On Thursday, judge Chili postponed the matter to 11 September in order to give reasons for his decision [in March] to dismiss Zuma’s application.

ABBA warns Donald Trump: ‘Stop playing our songs!’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/politics/abba-warns-donald-trump-stop-playing-our-songs-united-states-election-breaking-news-kamala-harris/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:22:16 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166674 The record label for iconic Swedish pop group ABBA said on Thursday it has demanded that US presidential hopeful Donald Trump stop playing its music at his campaign rallies.

Universal Music in Sweden said videos had surfaced of ABBA’s music being played at at least one Trump event.

Donald Trump played ‘The Winner Takes it All’ in Minnesota

“We have demanded that (the material) be taken down and removed,” Universal Music AB told AFP in an email.

“Universal Music Publishing AB and (record company) Polar Music International AB have not received any request (to use the music), so no permission or licence has been given to Trump,” it said.

Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet said its reporter had in July attended a Donald Trump rally in Minnesota – known for its strong Swedish community – where “The Winner Takes it All” was played.

The reporter said the song was followed by a 10-minute video clip, projected on a big screen, of ABBA in its heyday playing some of its biggest hits, including “Money, Money, Money” and “Dancing Queen”.

Catchy melodies

With their catchy melodies and glittering costumes, Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid – whose initials make up the name of the group – personified disco around the globe until they stopped performing in 1982.

The group is the latest in a slew of artists who have asked the US Republican presidential candidate to refrain from using their music at rallies and events, including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Celine Dion and the Rolling Stones.

Two BIG players missing from the Bafana Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/bafana-bafana/big-absentees-bafana-bafana-squad-kaizer-chiefs-dortley/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:12:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166603 Percy Tau is not in the final Bafana Bafana squad for Afcon qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan while Kaizer Chiefs star Rushwin Dortley is in the group.

Bafana Bafana omit Tau for Afcon qualifiers

Percy Tau has been omitted from the Bafana Bafana squad for qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan in September with an injury. Skipper Ronwen Williams also misses out with a knock. Hugo Broos has instead opted for Themba Zwane, Oswin Appollis, Patrick Maswanganyi, Iqraam Rayners, Elias Mokwana, Relebohile Mofokeng and Lyle Foster as the options in the final third.

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs represented

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, midfielder Thalente Mbatha and attackers Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are the Orlando Pirates players to get call-ups. Mofokeng was on the score sheet on Wednesday as Pirates battled to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-final first leg. Meanwhile, talented 22-year-old Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is in the group.

Foster is Bafana’s priciest-ever player

According to media reports on X, newly-promoted Ipswich Town are negotiating a long transfer for Lyle Foster with an obligation to buy. The 23-year-old Soweto-born striker scored five goals and supplied three assists in 24 Premier League appearances last term. Foster has 12 caps and four goals for South Africa. The obligation to buy figure is £25m, roughly €30m or R594 million.

Benni McCarthy was formerly the most expensive South African footballer ever when Celta Vigo paid Ajax €6m (R113 million) for his services. After Benni, Joburg-born playmaker Steven Pienaar was the second-most expensive when 2011 he moved from Everton to Tottenham and fetched a fee of €3.6m (R67.6 million). The guaranteed fee that Burnley will pay to Westerlo for Kyle Foster’s services has shattered the record held by Benni since 1999. The Clarets paid €7m upfront, with a further €4m of add-ons triggered because of their promotion to the EPL. Foster’s move amounted to a staggering R225 million, but now his value is estimated at €13m (R257 million).

If Foster’s proposed move to Ipswich goes through, he’ll shatter his previous record.

Snow on Table Mountain – MORE PICTURES https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/weather/snow-on-table-mountain-more-pictures-images-video-breaking/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:02:36 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166639 Temperatures plummeted in Cape Town this week which resulted in a dusting of snow on Table Mountain.

According to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway’s social media pages, snow fell on Table Mountain on Wednesday morning.

Cape Town has been gripped by icy, wet and windy weather conditions in the last 48 hours which has resulted in widespread damage, as reported by The South African website.

It might well the reason you’re struggling to feel your fingers and toes!

Wednesday was reportedly the coldest day of the ongoing winter in the Mother City.

Thankfully for Capetonians, the sun is expected to shine for the rest of the week, but temperatures will remain low as spring struggles to break through.

The six major dams in the Western Cape are all at over 100% of capacity at present.

Meanwhile, the Table Mountain aerial cableway is currently closed for maintenance, but is expected to reopen on 2 September 2024.

The plus-size content creator has even joked about moving to Mzansi.

MISS KWARA THANKS SOUTH AFRICANS FOR SUPPORT

In recent days, South Africans on social media users have shifted their support from Chidimma Adetshina to Ufa, known as Miss Kwara.

For many, this is based on her literally standing out from the crowd as a plus-size model and embracing her darker shade of skin.

The support has seen Ufa receive over 3000 votes from South Africans, who hope to fast-track her to the Top 10 of the pageant. The results will be revealed at the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant in Lagos this weekend.

In Instagram Stories this week, Miss Kwara thanked her supporters for their encouragement and kind words.

She posted: “Y’all, I’m South African now. I’m so humbled by the level of support.

Miss Kwara added that her foreign fans had given her South African names like “Nomathemba, Nyiko, and Mbali.”

She jokingly added: “Maybe I’ll move to SA.”

Currently, Ufa has received over 10 000 votes, or 11 % of votes in the competition.

Chidimma has over 15 000 or 17% of the votes.

IN IT TO WIN IT

Speaking to Her Network Online, Miss Kwara claimed that she was hoping to use her platform to inspire other women to be body positive.

She said: “I’m here to champion what matters, empower others, and create a ripple effect of positive change beyond the pageant and into the community.

Nikki Glaser to host Golden Globes https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/nikki-glaser-to-host-golden-globes/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:29:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166526 The Golden Globes has a new host, and she’s ready to shake things up. Nikki Glaser is famous for her sharp wit and fearless humour.

She will be leading the charge at the 82nd annual Golden Globes.

NIKKI GLASER AND THE GOLDEN GLOBES

Nikki Glaser’s reputation for no-holds-barred comedy has generated great excitement.

This will be her debut as host, according to Daily Mail.

If her recent performances are any indication, she will deliver a memorable night for the audience. Nikki Glaser’s selection as host has certainly stirred excitement.

NIKKI GLASER’S ENERGY

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes,” Glaser said.

“It’s one of my favourite nights of television. Now I get a front row seat—actually, I think I have to host from the stage.”

Her enthusiasm is palpable, and it’s clear she’s ready to take on the challenge.

THE GOLDEN GLOBES

The Golden Globes, set to air on 5 January 2025, will broadcast live and be available for streaming, according to Variety.

This prestigious award show celebrates both film and television. The show received criticism for being outdated in recent years.

However, Glaser’s appointment could signal a much-needed shift. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy,” she added.

“It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked. At least, I hope so.”

CANDID HUMOUR

Glaser showcased her humour by hosting Tom Brady’s roast, which was a hit, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Her candid and irreverent style was a standout. It’s this same bold approach that she will bring to the Golden Globes.

“Some of my favourite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues. Tina, Amy, or Ricky said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear,” Glaser reflected.

UNMATCHED COMEDY

“I hope to continue that time-honoured tradition, even if it might get me cancelled.”

The Golden Globes has a history of featuring provocative humour, and Glaser seems poised to continue that legacy.

“Nikki Glaser brings a fresh and unmatched candour to her comedy and to the Golden Globes,” said Jay Penske, Chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions and Penske Media Corporation.

“Her unapologetic style made her an obvious and compelling choice as host for this year’s event.”

NIKKI GLASER’S UNFILTERED HUMOUR

Helen Hoehne, President of the Golden Globes, echoed this sentiment.

“Nikki Glaser is a comedic powerhouse. Her daring and unfiltered humour perfectly matches the Golden Globes,” she said.

“She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep the audience entertained all night.”

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Glaser’s career has been on the rise, with her critically acclaimed HBO comedy special Good Clean Filth in 2022 and an EMMY nomination for Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die.

She also hosts The Nikki Glaser Podcast and recently wrapped her global THE GOOD GIRL stand-up tour.

With her current ALIVE AND UNWELL tour extending through May 2025, Glaser’s plate is full, but she remains excited about her new role.

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER

Glaser’s hosting gig at the Golden Globes offers a chance to catch the show live or on streaming services.

It promises to be a night where humour takes centre stage, and Glaser’s fearless approach could very well make it an event to remember.

As the Golden Globes gears up for its big night, one thing is certain: Nikki Glaser is ready to make her mark.

Severe weather disrupts Cape Town waste collection services https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/severe-weather-disrupts-cape-town-waste-collection-services/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:28:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166484 Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate has announced delays in refuse collection due to severe flooding, which has disrupted the movement of collection vehicles. The Schaapkraal Drop-off facility has also been temporarily closed until further notice. The Directorate advises residents to leave their bins out each day until collection is completed, as delays are expected for the rest of the week.

Storms and flooding impact waste collection services

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued warnings for damaging winds and large waves along the Western Cape coast from Tuesday to Thursday.

This severe weather has caused significant delays in refuse collection across the city. The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is monitoring the situation closely and has teams on standby to respond to any incidents. Although no major incidents have been reported, low-lying areas remain waterlogged due to the record rainfall experienced in July.

Response and community advisory

Teams are currently working to clear the backlog that has developed due to the storm, but the ongoing rainy conditions are likely to continue causing delays. The Directorate has assured residents that every effort is being made to maintain the waste collection service delivery. Waste collections are currently delayed by one day in most areas, and teams will work over the weekend to clear any remaining backlogs by Friday, 30 August.

The Schaapkraal Drop-off site remains closed due to flooding. Residents are encouraged to hold onto their waste until the site reopens or to use alternative drop-off sites listed on the City of Cape Town’s website. The Directorate also reminds residents that recycling and composting can help reduce the amount of waste in their bins during this period.

With the storm expected to subside by Thursday, the City of Cape Town is hopeful that conditions will improve, allowing refuse collection services to return to their normal schedule.

All Blacks coach: We’ll see if Rassie has rhythm https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/all-blacks-coach-robertson-well-see-if-rassie-erasmus-has-rhythm/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:25:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166595 Rassie Erasmus’ Springbok side currently sit at the top of the Rugby Championship log, but they will now face a massive challenge in the form of back-to-back Tests against the All Blacks.

First up, the Springboks will play New Zealand in Johannesburg this weekend before a ‘rematch’ in Cape Town on 7 September.

It will effectively also see a clash between two of the most highly-regarded coaches in the game, Rassie Erasmus and Scott Robertson.

On a more serious note, though, he said there was no doubt that Rassie had set a ‘benchmark’ as a coach.

“We shared a few beers and a few stories after the games over the years. We just have a good little rapport that you’re sort of connected in,” Robertson told reporters on Thursday.

“You watch players go into their coaching after they’ve played and you look to his journey and how he’s got to where he’s got to where he’s got, it’s a pretty remarkable story isn’t it? He won a couple of World Cups… he’s got seven forwards on the bench and it’s awesome.

“He’s one of the benchmarks, yeah, for sure,” he added. “You have all that success, you’ve got to respect that.”

Rassie’s reputation precedes him

Looking ahead to the upcoming blockbuster clashes, Robertson has opened up about what he was expecting.

“They’ve got a clear DNA, South Africa,” Robertson said in assessing his next opponents. “They’ve been pretty innovative and have evolved really well in the last few games, so that’s the exciting part.

“You get to see enough of them in Test footy and you see how [Erasmus’] mind works. He’s pretty special. They’ve got a great group there, so they’re going to be a great Test matches.”

The All Blacks will be touring South Africa for just the third time since Erasmus took charge of the Boks in 2018.

“They’re just a different challenge,” Robertson added. “They’re set-piece orientated, but can get you in some great kick battles and put pressure [on you] in different ways. It’s a little bit different to [playing in] Lautoka [in Fiji] or playing at Suncorp.

“[There’s the] Highveld, there’s conditions, there’s all those factors that come with it. You do miss it, because it’s a different challenge, but it’s an exciting one.”

How to create a perfect pet-friendly garden https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/how-to-create-a-perfect-pet-friendly-garden/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:22:42 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166579 A garden is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, and it can be even more enjoyable when shared with your furry friends. However, creating a pet-friendly garden requires careful planning to ensure both your pet’s safety and your garden’s beauty. Here are some tips to help you achieve the perfect pet-friendly outdoor space.

Safety First

  • Fencing: Ensure your garden is securely fenced to prevent your pet from wandering off or encountering hazards. Consider using a sturdy, buried fence to deter escape attempts.
  • Toxic Plants: Research plants that are toxic to pets and avoid planting them in your garden. Common toxic plants include lilies, oleander, and daffodils.
  • Ponds and Water Features: If you have a pond or water feature, ensure it is safe for your pet. Consider adding a gentle slope or ramp for easy access and avoid deep areas that could pose a drowning hazard.

Comfort and Enrichment for Your Pet-Friendly Garden

  • Shade: Provide plenty of shade for your pet, especially during hot weather. Trees, shrubs, or shade sails can be effective options.
  • Shelter: A pet-friendly shelter can offer a cozy retreat from the elements. Consider a dog house or a covered area with bedding.
  • Enrichment: Keep your pet entertained with enrichment activities. Bury toys or treats in the garden, provide scratching posts for cats, or create a low-level obstacle course.

Practical Considerations for Your Pet-Friendly Garden

  • Lawn Care: Choose pet-friendly lawn care products that are safe for your pet to play on. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pesticides.
  • Waste Management: Provide designated areas for your pet to relieve themselves. Clean up waste promptly to prevent health hazards and unpleasant odors.
  • Accessibility: Ensure your garden is accessible to your pet, especially if they have mobility issues. Consider creating ramps or pathways for easier navigation.

Additional Tips

  • Socialization: If your pet is dog-friendly, consider hosting playdates with other pet owners. This can provide valuable socialization opportunities.
  • Training: Train your pet to stay within the boundaries of your garden and to avoid digging or damaging plants. Positive reinforcement techniques can be highly effective.
  • Customization: Make your garden unique to your pet’s preferences. Consider their breed, age, and personality when choosing plants, decorations, and activities.

By following these guidelines, you can create a beautiful and enjoyable outdoor space that your pet will love. Remember, a pet-friendly garden is a place where your furry friend can roam freely, play, and feel safe.

Kaizer Chiefs fans question Makaab’s player recommendations https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-fans-question-makaabs-player-recommendations/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:21:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166577 Kaizer Chiefs fans question agent Mike Makaab’s player recommendations. What you need to know according to Kick Off

Recent criticisms from Chiefs supporters have raised questions about renowned agent Makaab, with fans accusing him of favouring Mamelodi Sundowns over Kaizer Chiefs. Makaab, a prominent figure in football management, recently sparked speculation by suggesting he had offered a striker to Chiefs, without disclosing the player’s identity. This led to widespread speculation that Togolese forward Yawo Agbagno of ASO Chlef might be the player in question due to his links with Amakhosi.

Makaab reveals details on player offers and rebuffed talent

In response to the allegations, Makaab disclosed that Chiefs had turned down a striker he considers the best on the African continent. Despite his assertion, Chiefs fans have remained unconvinced, arguing that Makaab consistently directs top talent from his agency to Sundowns. To counter these claims, Makaab highlighted instances where he offered high-profile players to Chiefs, including Andile Jali, who left Belgian club KV Oostende in 2018, Sibusiso Vilakazi from Bidvest Wits, and Sipho Mbule from SuperSport United.

“I cannot force any football club to sign a player,” Makaab stated during an interview on Gagasi FM. His comments emphasise the limitations of his influence over club decisions, despite his efforts to provide quality options.

Kaizer Chiefs’ goal-scoring challenges

Kaizer Chiefs have struggled with their goal-scoring capabilities. Netting only 25 goals in 30 league matches last season, which averages out to 0.8 goals per game. This lack of firepower contributed to their disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premiership. The club’s efforts to address this issue through new signings have been lacklustre. With their most notable acquisition being 33-year-old Gaston Sirino, which has left fans concerned about the team’s attacking prospects.

The recent 4-0 defeat to Young Africans in the Toyota Cup pre-season tournament has intensified concerns about the team’s offensive strength. Chiefs’ inability to secure their primary target, Fiston Mayele from Pyramids FC, adds to their difficulties. Reports now suggest that they are competing with Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club for the services of Yanga SC forward Clement Mzize. Who joined them under former coach Nasreddine Nabi.

The search for a prolific striker

As the transfer window continues, Kaizer Chiefs are under pressure to find a prolific striker who can resolve their scoring issues. And ultimately improve their league standing. Fans and analysts are closely watching to see if the club can successfully recruit the right talent. That will turn their fortunes around and make a stronger push in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned  with The South African for more updates as Kaizer Chiefs fans continue to question agent on social media.

FIVE Orlando Pirates players in the final Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/five-orlando-pirates-players-final-bafana-squad-news/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:13:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166565 Five Orlando Pirates players have made the final Bafana Bafana squad for Afcon qualifiers in September.

Quintet of Orlando Pirates players in the final Bafana Bafana squad

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, midfielder Thalente Mbatha and attackers Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are the players in question. Mofokeng was on the score sheet on Wednesday as Pirates battled to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-final first leg.

Exciting personnel at Pirates

Dancing Angolan right-winger Gilberto arrived at the club for R11 million in late June and finally made his competitive debut in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg draw with City. Thabiso Monyane played right-back with Van Rooyen ineligible and Thabiso Lebitso nursing an injury. Monyane, unfortunately, has missed out on this final Bafana squad after being named in the preliminary group.

Former Pirates man Foster is heading back to the EPL

Meanwhile, over in England, newly-promoted Ipswich Town is negotiating a long transfer for Lyle Foster with an obligation to buy. The 23-year-old Soweto-born striker scored five goals and supplied three assists in 24 Premier League appearances last term. Foster has 12 caps and four goals for South Africa. The obligation to buy figure is £25m, roughly €30m or R594 million.

Bucs to wield the axe

According to SoccerLaduma sources, Pirates will sell or loan out as many as seven players before the new season. Sphamandla Gumede, Sandile Mthethwa, Bandile Shandu, Siphelo Baloni, Katlego Otladisa, Azola Tshobeni and the returning Goodman Mosele are all on the chopping block.

“They want to cut the squad to a sizeable one at least between 30 and 32 players, and now the team has over 40. That’s why they’re looking at letting some of them leave,” their source said.

Orlando Pirates finished the 2023-2024 DStv Premiership campaign in second place, earning a spot in the 2024-2025 Caf Champions League. Jose Riveiro’s team also won two major honours, beating Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 finals. Riveiro’s mandate will be to dethrone Sundowns and deliver the first top-flight league title for the Buccaneers fans since 2012.

Oasis add more dates to 2025 reunion tour, nothing yet for South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/music/oasis-add-more-dates-to-2025-reunion-tour-nothing-yet-for-south-africa-latest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:55:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166551 British nineties band Oasis on Thursday announced three more dates to their worldwide reunion tour.

Noel Gallagher posted on X that “due to unprecedented demand” they would play the three additional concerts in July and August next year.

Oasis will play outside of Europe in 2025

Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have put their infamous 15-year feud behind them for the tour.

The duo behind hit songs including “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova” announced on Tuesday they would play an initial 14 gigs next year in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and the Irish capital, Dublin, starting in July 2025.

They also said they plan to play in “continents outside of Europe later next year”.

The extra shows will be in Manchester, London and Edinburgh.

Tickets have not yet gone on sale for the tour.

Fans had been invited to apply for a pre-sale ballot – now closed – before Saturday’s general release.

Formed in Manchester, northwest England in 1991, Oasis are credited with helping create the Britpop era of that decade that included bands such as Blur with which there was a fierce rivalry.

Public fights

But the two brothers were notorious for their public fights which eventually came to a head during a spat at a 2009 Paris festival, when Liam broke one of Noel’s guitars.

That was the last time the two brothers played together although each has regularly played the band’s hits to sold-out crowds.

The reunion will take place 30 years after Oasis’s 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

Exciting Kaizer Chiefs star makes final Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/exciting-kaizer-chiefs-star-makes-final-bafana-squad/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:50:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166532 New Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is in the final Bafana Bafana squad to face Uganda and South Sudan in September.

Bafana Bafana squad includes Kaizer Chiefs star Dortley

Rushwin Dortley is the only Chiefs star in the final 23-man group. Bruce Bvuma was in the preliminary squad but hasn’t made the final cut.

Intel: @UnplayableZA / X

New-look Kaizer Chiefs defence?

Inacio Miguel, goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari and left-back Bongani Sam and Dortley should Chiefs them a more resolute unit. Gaston Sirino arrives from Sundowns to pick a few passes, but who will stick those chances in the net? Chiefs have shifted their attention to another Young Africans striker after their pursuit of Fiston Mayele has seemingly hit a dead end. The man in question is 20-year-old Tanzanian forward Clement Mzisi. Born in 2004, Mzisi has one cap for Tanzania earned in September 2023. This after mooted moves for Fiston Mayele and Percy Tau haven’t borne any fruit. Mayele bagged 54 goals in two seasons under the tutelage of Nasreddine Nabi. Across all clubs, Mayele has 14 goals and four assists from 25 appearances in the Caf Champions League, Africa’s elite club competition. Chiefs will be disappointed to miss out.

Rushwin Dortley bio

  • Date of birth: 02 May, 2002
  • Place of birth: Cape Town
  • Age: 22
  • Height: 1.92m
  • Preferred foot: Left
  • Position: Central defender
  • Playing style: Technically gifted ball player
  • Strengths: Passing, composure, versatility
  • Weaknesses: No significant weaknesses, but aerial duels are not the strongest side of his game despite his impressive height and strength

Plumtree has brought in some of his players currently in Vodacom United Rugby Championship preseason training, as well as selecting new signings Ruan Dreyer at prop, Emmanuel Tshituka at flank and Jordan Hendrikse at fullback.

Nick Hatton leads as John Plumtree takes Sharks helm

Nick Hatton continues in his role as captain, leading the side as he has so well all season.

He will call on the experience of players both in the starting lineup and off the bench, certainly the return of wing Makazole Mapimpi from the Springboks is a big boost, as are the likes of young Ethan Hooker, James Venter, Fez Mbatha, Dylan Richardson and Vincent Tshituka.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks are back at Hollywoodbets Kings Park for the final two rounds of the Carling Currie Cup competition, hosting the NovaVit Griffons on Saturday in the penultimate pool match.

With six players absent through injury the depth of the Sharks squad will be on display in Durban.

The Sharks are third on the overall log and second in the group heading towards the final two rounds of action. The heat will be on the Durban side with competition for playoff places really heating up. The Pumas remain hot on the heels of the Sharks.

As things stand the Griffons are well out of contention for a semi-final place but would love to cause problems for the Sharks on their own patch.

Saturday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 13:00.

Pamela Anderson reportedly turned down ‘Baywatch’ documentary https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/pamela-anderson-turned-down-baywatch-after-moment-in-the-sun-domentary/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:40:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166366 Former Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson will reportedly not feature in the upcoming documentary.

PAMELA ANDERSON: UPCOMING FILMS

TMZ reports that Pamela Anderson did not sit for an interview with the filmmakers despite an offer to participate in the Baywatch documentary.

It is believed Anderson is in a different chapter of her life and has two films in the pipeline namely, The Last Showgirl and The Naked Gun.

Anderson became popular after her breakout in Baywatch as CJ Parker in the 1989 series.

The former model also appeared in 2017 film Baywatch starring Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson, Priyanka Chopra.

The legendary actress has also appeared in films such as The Taking of Beverly HillsSnapdragonNaked Souls and Scooby Doo and many more.

BACKGROUND OF ‘BAYWATCH’?

Baywatch is a popular 1989 series which also featured David Hasselholf, Jason Momoa, Stacy Kamano, Yasmine Bleeth and Nicole Eggert and many more.

The popular series is based on lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California and Hawaii.

The latest documentary is a full reunion which will feature Nicole Eggert, Carmen Electra, Billy Warlock, Jeremy Jackson and others.

The publication adds that David Hasselhoff’s name is also not on the documentary’s confirmed list. However, Hasselhoff was reportedly interviewed back in 2019 when production for the documentary kicked off as “Baywatch: The Documentary.”

CJ PARKER ALMOST WRITTEN OUT

New York Post reveals that Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s infamous sex tape nearly cost the Baywatch legend her job.

Baywatch’s co-creator and producer Michael Berk reveals in the latest documentary titled, After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun that there were discussions about removing Anderson from the series after her sex tape with Lee leaked back in 1996.

“When Pam’s sex tape came out, the studio said, ‘Look, write her out of a couple of episodes, we’ve got to figure out what we’ll do with this, this is a disaster,’” Berk says.
