‘MUVHANGO’ HALTS PRODUCTION

Following the season finale of Muvhango the SABC is broadcasting the retro episodes of the Tshivenda soapie.

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela revealed on Monday, 8 July that the show is not cancelled.

“As I reported, the production had to shut down due to delays on the contract for the new season. This is a developing situation, and I will share it when it is finalised. But, by all accounts, the show will continue,” he added.

Zimoja reported in November 2023 that actors and crew from the soapie were left frustrated as they have reportedly not been paid since September before production break.

A source from production told the publication that actors and crew are about to lose their homes and cars due to non-payments.

“We have been on a production break since September and have still not been paid our salaries from before we went on a break. We are not getting any answers, which shows that we work like slaves at the hands of someone respected in the showbiz industry.”

Muvhango spokesperson Ndumi Mdletshe refused to comment on the matter when she was contacted by the publication.

Season 26 begins on 5 August at 21:00 on SABC 2.

Jacqui Hlongwane, who is the acting head of Channel at SABC2 says the public broadcaster, SABC2 is thrilled to support Muvhango in its exciting transformation.

“The show has long been a pillar of our programming. And we eagerly anticipate the infusion of fresh energy and captivating storytelling that Muvhango promises to bring to our viewers,” adds Hlongwane.

Entertainment commentator Mlu reports that Lebo Tisane and Wiseman Zitha have also joined the new and revamped cast.

Season 27 begins on 5 August at 21:00 on SABC 2.

LONDEKA SISHI: NEW ROLE

E.tv’s soapie Scandal! welcomes actress Londeka Sishi who will play the character of Busisiwe.

“Introducing Busisiwe played by @elle_sishi. She’s smart, sassy and has her eyes set on only one man. Nothing will stand in her way,” wrote the soapie.

Sishi joins the show after award-winning actor Kwenzo Ngcobo who’s landed the role of Nhloso Gasa.

Ngcobo will debut on the soapie Scandal! in August, according to entertainment commentator Mlu.

Their arrival come after the departures of actors Matthews Rantsoma, Lerato Nxumalo and Melusi Mbele.

The soapie also recently revealed that it’s expanding its episode offering and airs seven days a week.

Scandal! is currently third place on e.tv with 3.2 million viewers, according to The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa’s (BRCSA) June figures.

LANDING A ROLE IN ‘ADULTING’

Newcomer Londeka Sishi scored her big break in the TV industry when she landed the role of Nkanyezi on Showmax’s Adulting.

The 27-year-old actress tells Sowetan that she comes from a strict family where a career in acting didn’t seem like a viable option.

“After a while of wanting to get into this space and getting rejected at auditions, I kind of gave up on it and focused on my corporate career.”

“After the first episode aired, my social media following increased drastically. I started being recognised by the people on the streets who wanted to take pictures with me… so many people started showing me some love which was overwhelming but incredibly beautiful to experience,” she said.

Sishi adds that she had to go for counselling because of how drastic things changed for her. It was like a shock to the system how her life changed because she’s now on TV.

‘Scandal!’ Review: Is Nhlamulo Maseko sick? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/soapies/scandal-july-teasers-nhlamulo-maseko-sick-dying/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 10:47:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2138391 Safta-nominated actor Matthews Rantsoma who portrays fan-favourite character Nhlamulo will exit Scandal! on Wednesday, 24 July.

How will his character get written out of the e.tv soapie?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH NHLAMULO?

Nhlamulo Maseko has been acting out of character since his recent doctor’s visit in Scandal!.

He hinted to his business partner and friend, Mdala (James Sithole) that he’s been having headaches, who then advised him to see a doctor.

We then see Nhlamulo sitting quietly in his car after his appointment. He appears to be lying to Mdala about what the doctor said.

Nhlamulo then announces he wants to “finally” take his wife, Vuvu (Mamarumo Marokane) on honeymoon and asks his parents to babysit their children.

His mother asks to have a moment with him and asks him on Wednesday, 10 July episode if he’s okay as she senses that something may be wrong with him.

He denies everything but appears to be hiding something. He also doesn’t seem as cheerful as his wife about their honeymoon.

The TVSA July teasers reveals that a family may be burying a loved-one, but don’t reveal the family’s identity.

Wednesday 24 July: “An unexpected revelation spins Vuvu’s life out of control.”

Tuesday 30 July: “A family is left furious and dishing out blame when their loved one’s sendoff is halted.”

Is Nhlamulo dying and will the Masekos and Vuvu bury him?

MATTHEWS RANTSOMA RESIGNS FROM ‘SCANDAL!’

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela confirmed in May that the fan-favourite character Nhlamulo is written out of Scandal!

“Matthews Rantsoma dropped by Scandal! The actor, who joined the e.tv soapie in 2021 will be leaving the show. Rantsoma plays Nhlamulo on the show,” says Mphela.

Rantsoma joined the popular soapie in 2021 as Lindiwe’s (Nomvelo Makhanya) lover and a forex trader, Nhlamulo Maseko.

News of Rantsoma’s exit comes after the Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRCSA) revealed in March and April that Scandal! lost its signature first position.

The long-running soapie lost its first position to e.tv’s fashion telenovela, House of Zwide, in March when SABC1’s soapie, Skeem Saam joined the 19:30 timeslot.

‘Scandal!’ to air seven days a week https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/soapies/e-tv-scandal-air-7days-week-monday-friday/ Wed, 10 Jul 2024 13:10:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2137908 E.tv’s popular soapie, Scandal! confirmed on Wednesday, 10 July that it will soon play Monday to Sunday.

‘SCANDAL!’: LATEST

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reveals that Scandal! will air brand new episodes daily as the show is expanding its episode offering.

“Scandal! to air every day. The e.tv soapie is expanding its episode offering. The show will be airing 7 days a week. Brand new episodes will now be broadcast from Mondays to Sundays,” says Mphela.

Mphela adds that the move will begin this weekend and the show will continue to air at 19h30 on the channel.

The e.tv soapie which currently plays weekdays at 19:30 competes with Mzansi Magic’s My Brother’s Keeper and SABC1’s Skeem Saam.

The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa’s (BRCSA) May figures reveal that Scandal! pulled 3.5 million viewers and received 3.2 million viewers in June.

It is currently in third place after House of Zwide with 4.4 million viewers and Isitha: The Enemy with 3.5 million.

‘SKEEM SAAM’ BEATS E.TV SOAPIE

Scandal! lost its signature first position in March when Skeem Saam debuted on the 19:30 timeslot.

Skeem Saam’s viewership has increased as the show received 4 million viewers in April, 4.43 million viewers in May and 4.46 million in June.

The educational soapie is currently second place on SABC1 after Uzalo with 4.9 million viewers while Generations: The Legacy has 4.45 million views.

E.TV VIEWERS UNIMPRESSED

@AHT_YssY: “This is worse than downgrading to the 6h30pm time slot. Defeat is not the worst of failures. We all know that weekends are for groove and sports.”

@NneteKeNnete: “Desperation and bad move.”

@BiggMosss: “Aowa now that’s too much. I actually don’t watch it on the week and catch-up bulk on weekends. This is just too much commitment now. I won’t keep up.”

@ZamaNyathi7: “Skeem Saam is giving them serious competition.”

@Mam_Bhele: “This is a no no no no no no CIMA CIMA @etvScandal. We use weekends to catch up or stream other shows. Why does @etv invest in a 30min comedy series or game show.”

@Knowkcee: “No matter how much I love a show there’s no way I would watch it 7 days ngeviki? Asoze.”

@Jabu_Macdonald: “Weekends we should take a break from soapies. Also does this mean actors will shoot more scenes each day?”

IS MASEBE BETTER THAN MANAMELA?

Actress Florence Masebe debuted on the SABC1 soapie, Skeem Saam on Wednesday, 15 May as Meikie Maputla.

This comes after actress Harriet Manamela, who played the first Meikie Maputla was placed on sick leave. Masebe has temporarily replaced Manamela.

Viewers of the show took to social media to reflect on Masebe’s performance as the second Meikie.

While some viewers agree the veteran actress has been acing the role for her portrayal of the Maputla matriarch, some wish for Manamela’s return.

Sunday World reports that Manamela has recovered from her hip surgery and is ready to return to the show.

‘SKEEM SAAM’ FANS REACT TO MEIKIE’S STORYLINE

@kamogelo_chill: “Not in a bad way neh!? The problem is that people expect the same behavior from the actor who replaces the original one. Unfortunately, it is never going to work, Mama Florence is an actor, and she is doing amazing as Meikie. We need to learn to separate the actor from character.”

@SefakoX: “Not that I’m taking anything from Florence Masebe or undermining her performance, but honestly speaking Meiki Maputla’s role is her own role.”

@kamogelo_chill: ” #SkeemSaam I really wish some people could separate actors from characters, then they will be able to enjoy acting as a whole. Florence Masebe is doing amazing as Meikie Maputla. We cannot expect the same acting style from her to match Harriet’s one. It does not work that way.”

@geesum: “Flo Masebe speaks Sepedi better than most of these regular #SkeemSaam actors.”
