Kwesta discusses his breakout role in the Netflix film, ‘Piano Love’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/kwesta-discusses-his-breakout-role-in-the-netflix-film-piano-love/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 10:40:28 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159172 Talented musician Kwesta, real name Senzo Vilakazi will star alongside Bontle Modiselle in Black Brain Pictures’ film, Piano Love.

KWESTA: ‘THE IDEA OF ACTING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE’

The rapper Kwesta tells Sowetan that he initially turned down the role in Piano Love until filmmaker Mandla N changed his mind.

“The idea of acting has always been there. I’d always tell my friends, ‘Yazi one day, I’d like to try out acting’. But it wasn’t something I’d follow through,” he said.

“I’d often say I’ll produce a funny movie and just act in it for the fun of it, not in a serious way, because I respect the art and the craft immensely and I wouldn’t want to disrespect it. This is why I initially said ‘no’ to Mandla when he called and told me about the script and the idea of me playing lead in his film.”

Vilakazi adds that Mandla called him two or three days after declining the role to asked if he could come to his office.

“I went there. He painted a picture of the film’s plot and how he couldn’t find someone who raps in life and can embody this character way better than me,” he said.

The musician also says the filmmaker told him that he represents people from the hood very well as a musician.

Mandla wanted Kwesta to translate all of that on screen. He saw how passionate and excited he was and eventually agreed.

MORE STARS JOIN ‘PIANO LOVE’

The award-winning rapper Kwesta will be joined by choreographer Bontle Modiselle-Moloi in Piano Love.

Other stars to join the musician include former Scandal! star Given Stuurman as well as actors Bheki Sibiya and Peter Mashigo.

The upcoming film is produced by Mandla N from Black Brain Pictures, who confirms to TshisaLIVE that the film depicts the state of the music scene in South Africa today.

“I had to do something nice and huge for the culture. I couldn’t find anyone to finance so I financed it myself and sold it to Netflix,” he says.

He adds that the Ngud hitmaker will make his acting debut and was coached and trained to get him camera-ready.

The film is a love story set in the streets of Soweto and premieres on Netflix on Friday, 23 August.

ZAKHELE MABASA-MOKONE: ‘FANA LIKES TAKING CHANCES’

The One Weeks star Zakhele Mabasa-Mokone portrays a charming high-school dropout and taxi driver, Fana.

His character is in a relationship with a successful lawyer, Lihle, played by Sihle Ndaba.

Mabasa-Mokone tells Showmax that Fana is the type of guy that he’s come across in his life many times.

“He’s a guy that likes taking chances and isn’t afraid of doing so. Although Fana makes many mistakes, he’s also a lovable person because he’s so real and relatable.”

“Whether you’re an overachiever or an average Joe, a conversation with Fana will make you realise that we all experience similar trials and tribulations. In the same breath, Fana is a constant reminder of the importance of being yourself.”

The actor adds that he’s realising that Fana is not the type of guy who is into liking other women. He is loving, caring, and really wants to make his relationship with Lihle work.

BACKGROUND OF ‘ONE WEEKS’

One Weeks follows the story of a charming high school dropout from Soweto who finds himself unexpectedly dating a successful lawyer.

The family comedy about follows Fana, a charming high-school dropout from the streets of Soweto, who can’t believe his luck when he finds himself dating Lihle, a successful lawyer.

He has to rely on the help of Lihle’s sharp-witted 10-year-old daughter, Angie, to avoid losing Lihle to rich men.

The comedy is created and written by Gomora’s Chris Q Radebe who reveals that the show will taps into the wicked sense of humour that South Africans possess but also sheds light on the financial dynamics between partners in a relationship.

“South Africans love to laugh at themselves. For this particular show, the premise showcases how partners carry themselves in a relationship where the gender roles are reversed. Every broke guy sitting at a corner in the township aspires to date a successful woman, because they think only about the perks. One Weeks holds up a mirror to the side of this dynamic that they know nothing about – the amount of work it takes to keep a woman of such calibre,” says Radebe.

One Weeks premiered on Showmax on 22 July, with new episodes on Mondays.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ passes $1 billion mark globally https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/deadpool-wolverine-passes-1-billion-dollar-mark-globally-forbes-hollywood-reporter-breaking/ Sun, 11 Aug 2024 18:43:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156846 Disney/Marvel superhero comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” enjoyed an exceptional third weekend, taking in an estimated $54.2 million in North American theatres.

But Sony’s dramatic romance “It Ends With Us” was headed for one of the best openings ever for that genre, analysts said on Sunday.

Actors Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, seen at a 'Deadpool & Wolverine' event in New York on August 10, 2024, had a true power-couple weekend; his film topped the North American box office and hers, 'It Ends With Us,' came a close second

“Deadpool,” led by popular stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has now passed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, with $494.3 million in North America and $535 million internationally, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said.

Warner Bros.’ 2019 thriller “Joker” was the only other R-rated film to reach the $1 billion milestone, according to Hollywood Reporter.

But “It Ends With Us” was sailing along at a near-historic pace as well, taking in $50 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period in what was an extraordinary weekend for the power couple of Reynolds and Blake Lively – she produced and stars in the romance film.

It was the first time in an August, a traditionally slow month, that two films have grossed $50 million in the same weekend, Variety reported.

Analyst David A. Gross said that final numbers should place “It Ends With Us” – based on the 2016 novel by uber-best-selling author Colleen Hoover – among the top all-time romance openings.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” still has a firm grip on that list, with an $85.2 million opening.

In third for the weekend was Universal’s weather thriller “Twisters,” at $15 million, down one spot from last weekend. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones star as daring tornado chasers who sometimes find the tornados chasing them.

Lionsgate’s new release “Borderlands” placed fourth, at $8.8 million, in what Gross said was “a weak opening” for a video-game-based action film despite a cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. The critically panned film cost an estimated $100 million to make.

And in fifth, down one spot in its sixth weekend out, was Universal’s family-friendly animation “Despicable Me 4,” at $8 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

“Trap” ($6.7 million)

“Inside Out 2” ($5 million)

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” ($3.1 million)

“Cuckoo” ($3 million)

“Longlegs” ($2 million)

‘Sell-By Date’: Pieter-Dirk Uys returns to Soho Theatre  https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/sell-by-date-pieter-dirk-uys-returns-soho-theatre-london/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 07:15:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156130 South African satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys returns to Soho Theatre in London, for a one-man-show on 12 August.

PIETER-DIRK UYS RETURNS FOR LATEST ONE-MAN-SHOW

Satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys is returning for his latest one man show titled Sell-By Date at Soho Theatre in London. The show runs from 12-24 August. Uys, now 78 years old, returns after recent surgery which adds a surprising twists, delivering laughter in chaos.

Sell-By Date features not only the man, author and social activist as himself, but a parade of icons – male, female and political – bringing Londoners news and memories from life in the Rainbow Nation. The South African and British general elections will also be celebrated for the ‘mock’ in democracy and the ‘con’ in Constitution.

To find out more or buy a ticket, click here.

Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu never had a sell-by date, nor it seem do his beloved characters, Evita Bezuidenhout and Nowell Fine, but after 60 years live on stage, Uys is not surprised when he’s asked: ‘When will you retire?’ His answer is short and sweet: ‘Not re-tyre; retread!’

This 2024 performance brings London audiences Uys on top form: laughing at fears and embracing facts with his tongue firmly in your cheek.

“I love performing in London to an audience of my generation, and also to the social media TikTok adventurers. I’m an entertainer who tries to stick to the recipe of 49% anger versus 51% entertainment – not the other way round. It’s been a full-time job. Sometimes it feels as if I’m just starting,” he said.

PIETER-DIRK UYS REFLECTS ON APARTHEID

When asked what was the moment he knew political commentary would be a central component of the type of theatre he creates, he revealed it was during apartheid in South Africa.

“During the years of apartheid, every time I saw a sign that said WHITES ONLY, I knew what I had to do. Every time the apartheid government banned a play of mine, I wrote two more. The moment they tried to frighten me into silence, I rolled on red lipstick and let Evita Bezuidenhout handle it. While politics is, after all, the local drug that makes us all addicts, politics is also here today and gone tonight,” he said.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 finale delivers emotional drama https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-finale-delivers-emotional-drama/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 08:22:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2155403 The Targaryens have landed their dragons, but not in the way fans expected. The season 2 finale of House of the Dragon aired on HBO Max on Sunday night. It was a low-key episode, devoid of big battles or dramatic deaths.

Despite this, it captivated nearly 9 million viewers.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ EMOTIONAL FINALE

Geeta Vasant Patel, the director of the finale, revealed her thoughts on the episode. “I know that in the [House of the Dragon and ‘Game of Thrones’] universe, a season finale is the go-to.

You have a bunch of dragons fighting in the sky. And, I love it,” she said.

However, this finale was different, according to The New York Post.

Patel supported showrunner Ryan Condal’s vision.

“Ryan wanted to challenge that expectation with really strong dramatic storytelling, the nuts and bolts of dramaturgy,” she explained.

“Hopefully, it left you feeling something powerful.”

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ KEY CHARACTERS

The episode featured intense moments between key characters, according to Elle.

A standout scene was between Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his sister, Helaena (Phia Saban).

The two had a tense conversation on a balcony, where Aemond urged Helaena to fight for him.

Helaena, who has prophetic dreams, refused and foretold his demise.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ FAMILY DYNAMICS

Patel highlighted their unique relationship. “Helaena is the only person that can really get to Aemond’s heart.

He cares about her in a way that breaks through his armour,” she noted.

“When [his mother] Alicent interacts with Aemond, he puts his armour on in defence.

But Helaena is the only person that can keep him as Aemond, and can see him as the child he is.”

Another significant moment was a secret meeting between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke).

‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE’

‘Alicent tried to convince Rhaenyra to take the Iron Throne without bloodshed.

Patel described the scene’s conception: “Condal and writer/producer Sara Hess envisioned that scene as two friends who love each other and can’t stay apart because they’re connected from birth.”

Patel drew from her background in human rights and conflict for this scene on House of the Dragon.

“I’ve seen people go through this idea of, ‘An eye for an eye.’

If someone kills your son or daughter, you decide that the other side is inhuman because of what they did, so you respond by killing them.

Now you’ve got a problem,” she shared.

FINALE AND FAN SPECULATIONS

The House of the Dragon finale left some fans speculating about the future, according to Business Insider.

Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) discovered a dragon after agonising over her lack of one.

Book enthusiasts think this hints at her getting the Nettles plot line.

However, Patel remained coy, saying, “I don’t know the answer to that.”

The emotional depth of the finale has fans talking.

The decision to focus on relationships and character development over spectacle was bold.

CHARACTER AND STORY

Patel expressed her excitement about the direction. “I felt excited, and I definitely felt the challenge,” she said.

“It’s about creating powerful moments through character and story.”

House of the Dragon will conclude with Season 4, as announced recently.

The show, set 200 years before “Game of Thrones,” follows Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was supposed to become the Queen of Westeros.

Her brother Aegon usurped her, leading to a war.

DRAMATIC STORYTELLING

As fans await the next season, they will remember the emotional and dramatic storytelling of the finale.

Patel summed up the finale’s impact: “There is a childish juvenile level to us that comes to life in those moments.

You saw Olivia [Cooke] bite her nails and become childlike as Alicent, you saw Rhaenyra become this brat at times … those are choices the actors made.”

The House of the Dragon finale may not have had dragons battling in the sky, but it delivered powerful drama and unforgettable character moments.

So, I feel that Mama Jane’s storyline has the potential to open up conversations about the effects of dementia in black communities and how we plan on educating ourselves about this condition,” says Moshesh.

The actress says she also liked the way the storyline gives a glimpse of who Mama Jane was before her sickness and encourages people to watch for the young talent that is on the show.

“There is a bright future for all our youngins out there and it shows on 016FM. Shows like this are a constant reminder that there is so much that our young talent has to offer. They are not hungry for fame, but they have a story to tell, so let’s listen. “

TABILE TAU: ‘I CAN SEPARATE MY CRAFT FROM WHO I AM’

The actor Tabile Tau, who identifies as straight tells Sowetan that the reception has been amazing since landing the Youngins role.

“First day on set, I was kissing my boy Lebo. Then I figured I’m truly a professional, I can separate my craft from who I am. That’s how I have been looking at it, but you know the assumptions and speculations about my sexuality.”

“The reception has been amazing. As much as we do it [acting] because we love it and the work, you do want to delve into a bit of fame. I’m enjoying it because it now means all eyes are on me for the work I do.

The actor’s breakout role was in SABC1’s soapie Generations: The Legacy as Bonga in 2020.

“That was an overwhelming experience. It’s that one show you tell everyone, ‘Guys, one day I’m going to be on Generations,’” he says. “Nobody takes it seriously that you are going to be an actor and then, boom, you are on Generations.”

“Just the reaction from my family members, it’s like we’d won the World Cup. Seeing myself on screen for the first time, I was in tears because it was a life-long dream to be on Generations.”

Tau has also appeared in The Station, Goodbye Gogo, and Grootboom & Sons.

‘YOUNGINS’ RENEWED

The Showmax hit teen drama series, Youngins which stars Tabile, Tau, Tshepo Matlala and Thabiso Ramotshela has been renewed for a second season.

The show also stars Rhythm City star Kealeboga Masango as “it” girl Buhle, Lebohang Lephatsoana as Tumelo and Toka Mtabane as Khaya.

The Showmax drama series is a Tshedza Pictures production set at a fictional boarding school named Olifantsfontein High.

‘One Weeks’: Mangaliso a star is born! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/one-weeks-mangaliso-mthembu-angie-showmax/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 12:06:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2146374 South Africans praise Mangaliso Mthembu’s hilarious and heartwarming performance as Angie in One Weeks.

MANGALISO MTHEMBU: ‘I’M THRILLED THE SHOW IS OUT’

The One Weeks star Mangaliso Mthembu tells Showmax that she’s thrilled that the show is finally out and is thankful for the positive comments.

“In 2022 my mom told me that there was this show that required a child, so she and I took action and did a video audition which was sent to production. After a few weeks, I was informed that I got the role. I was so excited! Fast forward to December 2023 and we then started filming. The rest, as they say, is history,” she says.

“I enjoyed acting alongside Aunt Sihle and Uncle Zakhele. We just had so much fun, and it hardly felt like work. The best part was us all being in the green room after rehearsals.”

“It was really just a fun vibe of chats and singing. Oh, and working alongside Uncle Siphiwe Mtshali and Uncle Mpho Malatsi was just pure chaos. If you thought those two are funny on-screen, you have no idea how silly they can get behind the scenes.”

The child star adds that she would like to either be on a kid’s reality show or maybe play the role of a gangster’s child after One Weeks.

BACKGROUND OF ‘ONE WEEKS’

One Weeks follows the story of a charming high school dropout from Soweto who finds himself unexpectedly dating a successful lawyer.

Showmax has just released the first trailer for One Weeks; a family comedy about Fana, a charming high-school dropout from the streets of Soweto, who can’t believe his luck when he finds himself dating Lihle, a successful lawyer.

One Weeks holds up a mirror to the side of this dynamic that they know nothing about – the amount of work it takes to keep a woman of such calibre.”

One Weeks premiered on Showmax on 22 July, with new episodes on Mondays.

‘Squid Game’ to end with S3, S2 premieres in December https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/squid-game-to-end-with-s3-s2-premieres-in-december/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 08:38:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2152773 Netflix has thrilled fans with the announcement that the wildly popular series Squid Game will return. The second season will premiere on 26 December 2024.

But that’s not all – the streaming giant also revealed that the third and final season will arrive in 2025. This will bring the gripping tale to a close.

SQUID GAME

Squid Game took the world by storm when it premiered in mid-September 2021, according to Daily Mail.

The first season quickly became Netflix’s biggest show ever. It racked up over 1.65 billion viewing hours in the first 28 days.

More than 100 million Netflix accounts watched it, solidifying its place in television history with a record-breaking achievement.

The show even inspired a reality competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge.

SQUID GAME SEASON 2

Netflix marked the announcement with an Olympics-themed teaser, according to Deadline.

The trailer begins with a seemingly ordinary track and field race.

As the starter pistol fires, competitors sprint down the track.

Suddenly, familiar green jumpsuit-wearing contestants from Squid Game overtake them.

Chaos ensues as some fall to the ground while others keep running. The trailer ends with the enigmatic Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, asking, “It’s been three years. Do you want to play again?”

The release date for Season 2 then appears, igniting excitement among fans.

SQUID GAME PLOT

Squid Game follows a deadly contest where 456 individuals, all in desperate financial straits, compete in children’s games with lethal twists.

The prize? A life-changing sum of money. Season 1 centred on Seong Gi-hun, a divorced gambling addict played by Lee Jung-jae.

Gi-hun emerges as the victor but remains deeply traumatised by the horrifying events.

He vows to find and stop those running the game.

“Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, returns and joins the game again,” teased series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

“Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either.

THE ENSEMBLE CAST

The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3 of Squid Game, which will be brought to you next year.”

Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun, alongside Lee Byung-hun as Front Man, Gong Yoo as The Recruiter, and Wi Ha-joon as Detective Hwang Jun-ho.

Jun-ho’s fate was left uncertain after being shot by his brother, Front Man, and falling off a cliff in Season 1.

The announcement hints at his survival, adding more intrigue to the upcoming seasons, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

LOVE FOR THE FANS

In a heartfelt letter to fans, Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his excitement and gratitude.

“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with an incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” he wrote.

“I am beyond excited to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season.”

Reflecting on the journey, he added, “On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.’

It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well.”

A THRILLING RIDE

The creator promised fans another thrilling experience.

“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story.

We’ll do our best to bring you yet another thrill ride.”

With Season 2 just around the corner and the promise of a dramatic finale in Season 3, “Squid Game” continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

As Hwang Dong-hyuk concluded, “I hope you’re excited for what’s to come. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone.”

‘It was challenging’: Melusi Mbele on his role in ‘The Butcher’s Soul’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/melusi-mbele-mthunzi-showmax-the-butchers-soul/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 11:59:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2151500 Award-winning actor Melusi Mbele portrays the role of a butcher, Mthunzi in The Butcher’s Soul.

MELUSI MBELE: ‘MTHUNZI COMES FROM A MILITARY BACKGROUND’

The KwaZulu-Natal-born actor Melusi Mbele reveals why he took on the role of Mthunzi in the spine-chilling thriller, The Butcher’s Soul.

“The story was beautifully written, and I loved it. I found it fresh. As a family man with a daughter, I could easily relate to my character, imagining what I would do to protect my family in similar circumstances. I believe anyone would do whatever it takes for their family,” Mbele tells Showmax.

“Mthunzi comes from a military background and returns to his family to spend more time with them. He’s a good, reserved, and introverted guy, but you don’t want to cross him. Fortunately, my training and acting workshops helped me balance his humanity with his quest for vengeance.”

Mbele admits that the role was challenging as it had a lot of fight scenes. But he’s got a background in karate, so it wasn’t difficult to learn the stunts.

In the upcoming show, Mbele’s character is a butcher, Mthunzi, and his vigilante alter ego, Skhova.

The former Scandal! actor is also famously known for his roles in IsibayaRhythm CityMuvhango and Showmax’s Umakoti Wethu.

His impressive filmography made it an honour to share scenes with him. In our first scene together, he told me he understood why I was chosen for the role, which I took as a great compliment.”

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ makes spectacular theatre opening https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/deadpool-wolverine-makes-spectacular-theatre-opening-hugh-jackaman-ryan-reynolds/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 06:56:53 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2150517 New Disney/Marvel comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” scored a “spectacular” opening in North American theatres this weekend, its huge take of $205 million placing it not just near the top of superhero films but marking the eighth-biggest opening ever, analysts said on Sunday.

“The numbers are fantastic,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

“These characters’ popularity is growing, not slowing.”

The film is enjoying positive reviews and “excellent” audience scores, Gross said. The popularity of Ryan Reynolds (who plays Deadpool and shares a writing credit), and his real-life pal Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) – didn’t hurt, either.

The debut ranks just ahead of 2018’s “Black Panther,” which opened to $202 million, and just behind “Jurassic World” ($208 million in 2015), according to Variety. International ticket sales are already a stunning $233.3 million.

Best ever opening for an R-rated film

Its opening was also the best ever for an R-rated film (not inflation-adjusted), far surpassing the previous record holder, the first “Deadpool” ($133.7 million), according to the Hollywood Reporter.

That left last weekend’s top film, Universal’s weather thriller “Twisters,” twisting in the dust, with what normally would be a respectable take of $35.3 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported.

The stand-alone follow-up to 1996’s popular “Twister” has Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones playing risk-taking storm chasers caught in the middle of fast-converging tornadoes.

In third for the Friday-through-Sunday period was Universal’s animated comedy “Despicable Me 4,” earning $14.2 million in its fourth weekend out. It has total ticket sales so far of $291.0 million in North America.

Slipping one spot to fourth place was Disney and Pixar’s coming-of-age animation “Inside Out 2,” at $8.3 million.

Also down one spot was horror mystery “Longlegs” at $6.8 million. Nicolas Cage stars in the film, the all-time top grosser from indie studio Neon.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

“A Quiet Place: Day One” ($3.0 million)

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” ($1.3 million)

“The Fabulous Four” ($1.0 million)

“Fly Me to the Moon” ($750,000)

“Raayan” ($375,000)

RIP: Comedian Bob Newhart dies aged 94 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/lifestyle/celeb-news/international-celebs/rip-comedian-bob-newhart-dies-aged-94-big-bang-theory-breaking/ Fri, 19 Jul 2024 05:57:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2144292 Bob Newhart, the American stand-up performer whose comedy made him one of the top TV stars of his era, has died, his publicist announced on Thursday.

He was 94 years old.

The decorated Chicago icon was an accountant before striking gold with comedy, acclaimed for his dry, deadpan delivery.

Bob Newhart served in the Korean War

He died at his Los Angeles home after a series of short illnesses, his longtime publicist Jerry Digney said in a statement.

Born September 5, 1929, in suburban Illinois, Newhart studied business management before being drafted into the US army and serving in the Korean War.

He briefly studied law before quitting and getting work as an accountant, while moonlighting as a comedy performer and writer.

“In 1959, I gave myself a year to make it in comedy; it was back to accounting if comedy didn’t work out,” he has said.

It did – he was signed to Warner Bros. Records, and “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” became the music industry’s first comedy album to hit the top of the sales charts.

It earned him prestigious Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Album, and helped launch his career in television. The recording is now archived in the Library of Congress.

‘The Sound of Laughter’

Newhart starred in two long-running sitcoms in the 1970s and 1980s, and made guest star appearances into his 90s.

He featured as a recurring guest on “The Big Bang Theory” and also starred as Papa Elf in the Christmas film “Elf.”

The second of his sitcoms – the eight-season “Newhart” – closed in one of the most memorable series finales of all time.

In the final episode, Newhart’s character wakes up in bed with his wife from the first sitcom, telling her about a strange dream — the plot of the second show.

The stunt parodied a famous plot element from the series “Dallas.”

Newhart is survived by four children. His wife of six decades, Virginia, died in 2023.

“Comedy has given me a wonderful life. When I first started out in stand-up, I just remember the sound of laughter,” he once said.

“It’s one of the great sounds of the world.”

FIVE music videos filmed in South Africa by international stars https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/five-music-videos-filmed-in-south-africa-by-international-stars/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 18:16:49 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2141361 Many international music artists have been coming to South Africa to film their music videos, showcasing its diverse landscapes and rich culture. Here’s a list of five must-see music videos filmed in South Africa by international stars.

Robbie Williams – Sin Sin Sin

Directed by Vaughan Arnell, the filming of the music video for Sin Sin Sin took place in Cape Town a few days before Robbie Williams began a tour in South Africa. The filming took three days. Arnell has directed many of Williams’ previous videos such as Angels, Rock DJ, and Millennium.

Coldplay – Paradise

Coldplay’s team filmed the music video for their hit Paradise in Cape Town, the Boland, and the Karoo.

The music video tells the story of a lonely elephant in a London zoo longing for companionship. The elephant escapes the zoo, heads south and finally reaches its fellow-African wildlife in the Karoo.

At the time, Chris von Ulmenstein, a tourism expert, said that ‘the title of the song could not have been better chosen to reflect our beautiful country and city’.

Leona Lewis – Run

Nick Java directed the music video for the song Run by Leona Lewis. He also directed the videos for Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, Shiver by Natalie Imbrulgia, and Lovelight by Robbie Williams.

Snow Patrol – The Planets Bend Between Us

The music video for Snow Patrol’s song The Planets Bend Between Us was filmed in Cape Town in April 2009. Daniel Brereton was the director. He also directed the video for the band’s single If There’s a Rocket Tie Me to It.

The Script – Superheroes

Irish rock band The Script was so overwhelmed with the amount of people showing up for their show in Johannesburg during their 2011 tour that they decided to return to Alexandra township to film their song Superheroes.

In a behind-the-scenes video the pianist Danny O’Donoghue said that they wanted to give back ‘to the community that gave a lot to’ them on their tour.

The music video features clips of the band performing in Alexandra and celebrates working-class heroes. Director Vaughan Arnell explained that the song is about a man who works on a landfill site and is a superhero in his daughter’s eyes.

Major production company loses ‘Empini’ due to salary issues https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/clive-morris-production-loses-empini-showmax-salary-issues-siyabonha-thwala-nambitha-ben-mazwi/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 10:04:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2138592 One of the biggest production companies in South Africa, Clive Morris Productions, will no longer produce Showmax’s action-packed drama series, Empini.

According to ZiMoja, the production house – which has produced the South African Music Awards, Isono and other shows – has had financial issues.

‘EMPINI’ TO SHOOT UNDER ANOTHER PRODUCTION COMPANY

A source told the publication that the company’s financial issues aterted earlier this year, with actors and crew members not getting their salaries on time.

The source also alleged that it was not only the Empini actors and crew who were affected, as other shows produced by Clive Morris Productions – The Estate and Queendom

Although the Empini actors were eventually paid, the monetary issues persisted. The source alleged that the actors were again not paid last month.

“They have lost the production. It will be taken over by another production. This is after long meetings and actors complaining,” the source told the insider.

“Everyone did their part except for the production. They were hoping to get money but did not manage to do it on time,” the source added.

SHOWMAX CONFIRMS CHANGES

Showmax confirmed to IOL that a new production house is in the process of being appointed.

Empini is one of Showmax’s most-watched series at the moment. We place a high value on the welfare of cast and crew in all our productions.

“To ensure the continuation of Empini, especially given its huge popularity with our subscribers, a new production house is in the process of being appointed. We can confirm that all cast and crew have been paid,” the giant streaming platform said.

ABOUT ‘EMPINI’ AND THE CAST

Empini is a 52-episode drama set in the dangerous world of private security.

The show stars multi-award winner Nambitha Ben-Mazwi and three-time SAFTA winner Siyabonga Thwala.

Ben-Mazwi plays the character of Ndoni Themba, a deeply troubled private security bodyguard in search of answers. While Thwala portrays her mentor, Khaya Bhodoza, who is a prominent businessman and political stalwart.

Empini’s all-star cast also includes industry legend Owen Sejake (TsotsiBeat the Drum) as General Moeti, SAFTA winner Charmaine Mtinta (Yizo YizoHow To Ruin Christmas, Isono, and Makoti) as Dorah Themba, and SAFTA and Africa Movie Academy Award nominee Neo Ntlatleng (Zone 14Soul City) as Ghathuso Moeti, not to mention the likes of Sparky Xulu, Simphiwe Nkabinde, Kabelo Thai, Amahle Khumalo, Joseph Sedibo, Terrence Ngwila and Ernest Ndlovu.

Sihle Ndaba and Zakhele Mabasa-Mokone co-star in ‘One Weeks’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/sihle-ndaba-zakhele-mabasa-mokone-showmax-one-weeks/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 16:19:36 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2137177 Former Isibaya actors Zakhele Mabasa-Mokone and Sihle Ndaba have secured roles in Showmax’s upcoming show, One Weeks.

INSIDE SIHLE NDABA AND ZAKHELE MABASA NEW ROLES

The actress Sihle Ndaba will portray Lihle alongside Zakhele Mabasa-Mokone as Fana while Mangaliso Aluta Mthembu plays Angie.

Mabaso-Mokone believes the show will bring much-needed laughter to South Africans: “Things have been quite stressful, and I believe now is the time for people to enjoy some feel-good, family-oriented content like One Weeks.”

Ndaba says they’ve got a really amazing cast, the storyline is beautiful and relatable, and One Weeks is just such a feel-good show.

“But most importantly, One Weeks is also an interesting juxtaposition of two people from different backgrounds: the suburbs and the township.”

The comedy show also stars Rhythm City’s Siphiwe Mtshali, Scandal!’s Mpho Malatsi and many more.

One Weeks holds up a mirror to the side of this dynamic that they know nothing about – the amount of work it takes to keep a woman of such calibre.”

One Weeks premieres on Showmax on 22 July, with new episodes on Mondays.

‘LOSING LERATO 2’
