Oasis add more dates to 2025 reunion tour, nothing yet for South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/music/oasis-add-more-dates-to-2025-reunion-tour-nothing-yet-for-south-africa-latest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:55:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166551 British nineties band Oasis on Thursday announced three more dates to their worldwide reunion tour.

Noel Gallagher posted on X that “due to unprecedented demand” they would play the three additional concerts in July and August next year.

Oasis will play outside of Europe in 2025

Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have put their infamous 15-year feud behind them for the tour.

The duo behind hit songs including “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova” announced on Tuesday they would play an initial 14 gigs next year in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and the Irish capital, Dublin, starting in July 2025.

They also said they plan to play in “continents outside of Europe later next year”.

The extra shows will be in Manchester, London and Edinburgh.

Tickets have not yet gone on sale for the tour.

Fans had been invited to apply for a pre-sale ballot – now closed – before Saturday’s general release.

Formed in Manchester, northwest England in 1991, Oasis are credited with helping create the Britpop era of that decade that included bands such as Blur with which there was a fierce rivalry.

Public fights

But the two brothers were notorious for their public fights which eventually came to a head during a spat at a 2009 Paris festival, when Liam broke one of Noel’s guitars.

That was the last time the two brothers played together although each has regularly played the band’s hits to sold-out crowds.

The reunion will take place 30 years after Oasis’s 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

Oasis announce worldwide reunion tour, here are the UK dates https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/music/just-in-oasis-announce-worldwide-reunion-tour-breaking-news-dates-venue-confirmed-noel-liam-gallagher/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2164686 British rock legends Oasis announced on Tuesday they will reunite for a worldwide tour, as brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher ended an infamous 15-year feud.

The band behind hit songs including “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova”, will play an initial 14 gigs next year in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and the Irish capital, Dublin, starting in July.

Oasis also plan to play in “continents outside of Europe later next year,” according to a statement posted on their website.

Formed in Manchester, northwest England, in 1991 and credited with helping create the Britpop era of that decade, they will be the first Oasis gigs since 2009 after the Gallagher brothers fell out.

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised,” Oasis said, as it announced the reunion alongside the first details of the tour.

The announcement capped days of hints and fevered speculation the band was set to play again.

However, there was no announcement regarding the release of any new music, while Oasis will reportedly not play next year’s Glastonbury festival despite widespread speculation.

‘Hottest tickets’

“Oasis today end years of feverish speculation with the confirmation of a long-awaited run of UK and Ireland shows forming the domestic leg of their Oasis Live ’25 world tour,” the online statement added.

The tour will begin over two nights at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital Cardiff from July 4, 2025, followed a week later by four gigs at Heaton Park in their hometown, Manchester.

Oasis will then play London’s Wembley Stadium – on July 25 and 26 as well as August 2 and 3 – before taking to the stage over two nights at Murrayfield Stadium in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

The UK and Ireland gigs will conclude with two performances at Dublin’s Croke Park in mid-August.

“Their only shows in Europe next year, this will be one of the biggest live moments and hottest tickets of the decade,” the statement said.

A press release said there had been “no great revelatory moment that has ignited the reunion – just the gradual realisation that the time is right”.

It promised “a set full of wall-to-wall classics”.

Tickets for the UK dates will go on sale on Saturday from 10:00 (SA time), with Dublin tickets available from 09:00 (SA time) the same day.

Social media was abuzz with the news, with the band’s post racking up hundreds of thousands of likes and fans sharing their excitement.

“Last time I saw Oasis live was 1996 Loch Lomond. Alarm set for Saturday morning,” said one fan.

‘Never say never’

Oasis has long been synonymous with ’90s Britpop music, when it enjoyed a fierce rivalry with London band Blur, co-founded by Damon Albarn.

The Manchester outfit was also notorious for public fights between Liam and Noel.

The sibling tensions came to a head during a spat at a 2009 Paris festival, when Liam broke one of Noel’s guitars.

The brothers have not played together since – but both have still regularly played the band’s hits to sold-out crowds.

Until now, they had largely communicated in public through taking swipes at each other on social media.

The brothers have teased at a reconciliation before, with Noel last year saying “never say never”.

The hints became firmer more recently, with social media accounts for the brothers and Oasis all trailing Tuesday’s much-anticipated announcement.

The now-confirmed reunion will take place 30 years after Oasis’s 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

Meanwhile, tracks from the first recording session for its debut album “Definitely Maybe”, released a year earlier, will be put out Friday – a day after its 30th birthday – Britain’s Press Association (PA) news agency said.

Unheard versions of songs including “Live Forever”, “Cigarettes & Alcohol” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” recorded then will be among them.

‘Definitely, maybe’? Gallagher brothers tease Oasis reunion https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/music/definitely-maybe-liam-noel-gallagher-brothers-tease-oasis-reunion-latest/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 10:10:03 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2164117 Fans of British rock band Oasis buzzed with anticipation on Monday as Liam and Noel Gallagher teased that they could be returning to the stage together, 15 years after the band’s last performance.

The Britpop band – which spectacularly broke up in 2009 after rising to fame with hit songs “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova” – could play a series of gigs in London and Manchester next summer according to industry insiders cited by the Sunday Times newspaper.

Rumours included 10 dates being booked at London’s Wembley Stadium and a possible headline slot at Glastonbury festival as the brothers reportedly thawed their decade-long feud.

At midnight on Monday, both brothers and the official Oasis account hinted on X that an announcement would be made on Tuesday, 27 August at 09:00 (SA time), posting the same clip with the date and time flickering in the style of the Oasis logo.

The clip teasing the announcement was also shown on screens at the end of Liam’s Sunday gig at the Reading music festival, part of the younger brother’s “Definitely Maybe” tour.

Liam also replied to a link of the Sunday Times article posted on X with “See you down the front”, and in another post on X said, “I never did like that word FORMER”.

Formed in 1991 in Manchester, Oasis was credited with reviving Britpop music, keeping fans riveted with the public fights between Liam and Noel and their chart-rivalry with the London-based group Blur.

Acrimonious split

Sibling tensions came to a head during a spat in Paris during the Rock en Seine festival in 2009, when Liam broke one of Noel’s guitars.

The brothers have not played together since the acrimonious split, but both still regularly play their old band’s hits to sold-out crowds.

Until now, they had largely communicated in public through taking swipes at each other on social media.

If true, the reunion would take place 30 years after Oasis’s 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

The brothers have teased at a reconciliation before, with Noel last year saying “never say never” about a reunion.

Uncertainty for Christiaan Barnard Heart of Cape Town Museum https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/uncertainty-christian-barnard-heart-of-cape-town-museum/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 10:44:28 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2161288 The Christiaan Barnard Heart of Cape Town Museum at Groote Schuur Hospital is facing an uncertain future.

It commemorates the exact site where the world’s first human heart transplant was affected five-and-a-half-decades ago.

Now, the interactive museum – filled with silicone figurines and original machinery used to perform the groundbreaking procedure in December 1967 – will have to close, reports IOL.

Said theatre was declared a National Monument decades ago.

And Professor Barnard operated on both the heart donor Denise Darvall (25) and recipient Louis Washkansky (55) in there.

Furthermore, the first-of-its-kind procedure required a medical team of 30 and lasted six hours.

Professor Barnard was nominated for the 1968 Nobel Prize for Medicine. And he went on to perform 53 transplants before retiring in 1983.

Barnard passed away in September 2001 at the age of 78.

Currently, the Christiaan Barnard Heart of Cape Town Museum will have to vacate its historically significant premises by 5 July 2025.

A management agreement between the museum and Groote Schuur Hospital Facility Board (GSHFB) expires on that date.

The museum originally opened on 3 December 2007, the 40th anniversary of the celebrated operation.

A contract for 10 years was secured, with a renewal for another 10 years following that.

Faced with the prospect of closing the museum, curator and advocate Hennie Joubert says: “I would prefer to see that it is there forever. But if the hospital is not interested there’s nothing I can do. In terms of finding another space, the Dr. Chris Barnard Museum in Beaufort West (the town where he was born) is an option. But for the time being, I’m going to take out everything and put it in storage. Because I’m not going to leave it for Groote Schuur to take,” explained Joubert.

However, the South African Heritage Resources Agency dictates that all National Monuments are automatically deemed Provincial Heritage Sites.

This follows the promulgation of the National Heritage Resources Act in 1999.

Therefore, for any changes to be made by the hospital, they will have to apply to the relevant authority (in this case Heritage Western Cape) for permission.

SHOULD THE MUSEUM STAY OR IS IT A SYMBOL OF OLD SOUTH AFRICA?

KWESTA: ‘THE IDEA OF ACTING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE’

The rapper Kwesta tells Sowetan that he initially turned down the role in Piano Love until filmmaker Mandla N changed his mind.

“The idea of acting has always been there. I’d always tell my friends, ‘Yazi one day, I’d like to try out acting’. But it wasn’t something I’d follow through,” he said.

“I’d often say I’ll produce a funny movie and just act in it for the fun of it, not in a serious way, because I respect the art and the craft immensely and I wouldn’t want to disrespect it. This is why I initially said ‘no’ to Mandla when he called and told me about the script and the idea of me playing lead in his film.”

Vilakazi adds that Mandla called him two or three days after declining the role to asked if he could come to his office.

“I went there. He painted a picture of the film’s plot and how he couldn’t find someone who raps in life and can embody this character way better than me,” he said.

The musician also says the filmmaker told him that he represents people from the hood very well as a musician.

Mandla wanted Kwesta to translate all of that on screen. He saw how passionate and excited he was and eventually agreed.

MORE STARS JOIN ‘PIANO LOVE’

The award-winning rapper Kwesta will be joined by choreographer Bontle Modiselle-Moloi in Piano Love.

Other stars to join the musician include former Scandal! star Given Stuurman as well as actors Bheki Sibiya and Peter Mashigo.

“I had to do something nice and huge for the culture. I couldn’t find anyone to finance so I financed it myself and sold it to Netflix,” he says.

He adds that the Ngud hitmaker will make his acting debut and was coached and trained to get him camera-ready.

The film is a love story set in the streets of Soweto and premieres on Netflix on Friday, 23 August.

One Weeks follows the story of a charming high school dropout from Soweto who finds himself unexpectedly dating a successful lawyer.

The family comedy about follows Fana, a charming high-school dropout from the streets of Soweto, who can’t believe his luck when he finds himself dating Lihle, a successful lawyer.

He has to rely on the help of Lihle’s sharp-witted 10-year-old daughter, Angie, to avoid losing Lihle to rich men.

The comedy is created and written by Gomora’s Chris Q Radebe who reveals that the show will taps into the wicked sense of humour that South Africans possess but also sheds light on the financial dynamics between partners in a relationship.

“South Africans love to laugh at themselves. For this particular show, the premise showcases how partners carry themselves in a relationship where the gender roles are reversed. Every broke guy sitting at a corner in the township aspires to date a successful woman, because they think only about the perks. One Weeks holds up a mirror to the side of this dynamic that they know nothing about – the amount of work it takes to keep a woman of such calibre,” says Radebe.

One Weeks premiered on Showmax on 22 July, with new episodes on Mondays.

Banksy lifts curtain on London animal mural series https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/art-artists/banksy-lifts-curtain-on-london-animal-mural-series-picture-photo-breaking/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 15:06:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157262 Elusive street artist Banksy’s ninth animal-themed mural in nine days, unveiled on Tuesday on a shutter outside London Zoo, depicted a gorilla releasing animals from the zoo, tying together the series of artworks.

Claimed by the artist on Instagram, the mural outside London Zoo showed a gorilla lifting the shutter to free birds and a seal, with some animals staring out from the inside.

It is the latest in Banksy’s series populating the British capital with animals, starting with a goat revealed last week Monday, followed by two elephants the next day and then monkeys, a wolf, pelicans, a cat, piranhas and a rhinoceros in subsequent days.

Banksy’s identity is publicly unknown

The frequency of artworks is unusual for Banksy – whose identity is publicly unknown – and who usually spaces out his pieces over months, leaving fans speculating about the meaning of the different animals and awaiting a “big” reveal.

The latest mural was “an absolute shock and surprise to all of us here at London Zoo”, Karl Penman, commercial operations manager at the zoo said.

“If it is the full stop, what a great full stop to end on,” Penman told AFP.

The BBC reported the that piece was the last in the series.

“You can see the watchful eyes, which to me look a little bit uncertain about whether they want to be free,” said doctor Sharmela Darne about the eyes of animals staring from behind the shutter in the latest artwork.

“But the seal’s clearly going away and so are the birds flying free… so maybe it’s about freedom and being unsure about freedom,” Darne told AFP.

For many, the animal safari has added some positivity to their week, as the country reeled following the death of three girls in a stabbing and ensuing violent riots.

Speaking in front of two pelicans painted over a fish shop in Walthamstow, northeast London, Peter McCarthy said it had been “very nice to have it in this particular week”.

“Very nice that he’s been around the country when there’s been such trouble. Doing these wonderful things.”

Removed

For others, the choice of animals has meaning, with some finding the goat similar to a Palestinian mountain gazelle and others pointing out the artist’s previous work on the climate crisis.

Three of the artworks have already been removed or stolen, and the rhino revealed on Monday was defaced the same day.

A satellite dish painted with the wolf was stolen within hours of being claimed by Banksy, with the cat on a billboard removed by contractors and a police box painted with swimming piranhas removed by the local authority to ensure it was “properly protected”.

Speaking in front of the cat on Saturday before it was removed, dentist Mitul Patel said he wished “people would leave his work alone so that other people could enjoy it as well”.

Locals and tourists alike have been enjoying the artworks that are still up.

Taking a brief pause from his job, construction worker Owen said the three monkeys in east London’s Shoreditch area were “very exciting” and a “big talking point”.

Kevin Mazur, a photographer visiting from the US, said he had been “running around photographing all” the artworks, and was “bummed” about having to return to New York.

Retiree Don Gould lives around the corner from the goat in southwest London’s Kew Green, and saw the artwork after it was revealed online last week.

“It’s very good excuse for a stroll on the green and a pint, isn’t it?”

Banksy unveils new Rhino mural in London https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/art-artists/banksy-unveils-new-rhino-mural-in-london/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 11:09:39 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157206 Banksy has once again captured London’s imagination with his latest mural, adding to his growing collection of animal-themed artworks.

BANKSY AND HIS LATEST WORK

On August 12, 2024, the elusive street artist unveiled his eighth piece, according to People.

It featured a rhinoceros perched atop a silver Nissan. The Rhino has a traffic cone on its hood.

This playful yet poignant work of art has appeared on the side of a building on Westmoor Street in southeast London.

BANKSY AND THE RHINO MURAL

The new rhino mural is the latest addition to Banksy’s series, which has been delighting Londoners since 5 August.

The artist’s previous works include a goat perched on a pillar, a piranha on a blue City of London police box, and a pair of elephants painted on a building wall.

BANKSY’S WIT AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY

Each piece has added a unique twist to the urban landscape. It reflects Banksy’s characteristic wit and social commentary.

The rhino mural, in particular, has been met with enthusiastic praise, according to Sky News.

One admirer commented, “Love it. What a clever piece of work.” Another noted, “They just get better.”

ANIMAL CHARITIES

The International Rhino Foundation joined in the celebration, calling the new mural their favourite.

“We may be biased,” the Foundation admitted, “but this is definitely our favourite Banksy.”

Animal charities, such as Helping Rhinos, have also expressed their admiration.

“So clever! Definitely our favourite, but that’s probably not surprising,” they remarked.

THE ART SERIES

The inclusion of the traffic cone adds a humorous touch, mimicking the wild animal’s horn.

The mural’s appearance follows a series of recent unveilings by Banksy, according to The Guardian.

Prior to the rhino, he painted a striking piece of a piranha on a City of London police box.

The local government is reportedly exploring ways to preserve this piece. This acknowledges its cultural and artistic value.

THE MYSTERY OF THE ART

Banksy’s second artwork in this series featured two elephants with their trunks touching, creating a touching tableau.

The artist has been sharing images of his new works daily on Instagram. This has sparked speculation about their meanings and the total number of pieces in this series.

Banksy’s choice to withhold details and captions adds to the mystery and allure surrounding his art.

BLENDING HUMOUR

As Londoners eagerly anticipate the next instalment, the city remains abuzz with excitement over Banksy’s latest creations.

His ability to blend humour, social commentary, and artistic flair keeps fans guessing and engaged.

Each new piece not only enhances the urban landscape but also invites viewers to ponder deeper messages behind the seemingly whimsical depictions.

INFLUENCE AND CREATIVITY

In a city where art frequently blurs the lines between public and private space, Banksy’s new rhino mural is a testament to the artist’s ongoing influence and creativity.

With each new work, he continues to challenge, entertain, and inspire, solidifying his place as one of the most intriguing and celebrated figures in contemporary art.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ passes $1 billion mark globally https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/deadpool-wolverine-passes-1-billion-dollar-mark-globally-forbes-hollywood-reporter-breaking/ Sun, 11 Aug 2024 18:43:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156846 Disney/Marvel superhero comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” enjoyed an exceptional third weekend, taking in an estimated $54.2 million in North American theatres.

But Sony’s dramatic romance “It Ends With Us” was headed for one of the best openings ever for that genre, analysts said on Sunday.

Actors Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, seen at a 'Deadpool & Wolverine' event in New York on August 10, 2024, had a true power-couple weekend; his film topped the North American box office and hers, 'It Ends With Us,' came a close second

“Deadpool,” led by popular stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has now passed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, with $494.3 million in North America and $535 million internationally, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said.

Warner Bros.’ 2019 thriller “Joker” was the only other R-rated film to reach the $1 billion milestone, according to Hollywood Reporter.

But “It Ends With Us” was sailing along at a near-historic pace as well, taking in $50 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period in what was an extraordinary weekend for the power couple of Reynolds and Blake Lively – she produced and stars in the romance film.

It was the first time in an August, a traditionally slow month, that two films have grossed $50 million in the same weekend, Variety reported.

Analyst David A. Gross said that final numbers should place “It Ends With Us” – based on the 2016 novel by uber-best-selling author Colleen Hoover – among the top all-time romance openings.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” still has a firm grip on that list, with an $85.2 million opening.

In third for the weekend was Universal’s weather thriller “Twisters,” at $15 million, down one spot from last weekend. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones star as daring tornado chasers who sometimes find the tornados chasing them.

Lionsgate’s new release “Borderlands” placed fourth, at $8.8 million, in what Gross said was “a weak opening” for a video-game-based action film despite a cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. The critically panned film cost an estimated $100 million to make.

And in fifth, down one spot in its sixth weekend out, was Universal’s family-friendly animation “Despicable Me 4,” at $8 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

“Trap” ($6.7 million)

“Inside Out 2” ($5 million)

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” ($3.1 million)

“Cuckoo” ($3 million)

“Longlegs” ($2 million)

Banksy wows London with three animal artworks – PICTURES https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/art-artists/banksy-wows-london-with-three-animal-artworks-pictures-images-street-artist/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 07:39:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156172 One goat, two elephants, and now three monkeys: British street artist Banksy thrilled fans in London by installing his third new artwork in three days.

The animal-themed collection has sparked speculation about their message. Are they criticism of England’s far-right riots or possibly support for Palestinians? Perhaps they reference global warming or even the Olympics?

Banksy’s identity remains unknown

As usual, the enigmatic artist gave no explanation when he claimed them on Instagram. What is unusual is how quickly they have appeared – usually Banksy’s works are spaced several months apart.

On Monday, a depiction of a goat precariously perched on top of a wall with rocks tumbling down appeared in Richmond, southwest London.

“I think it’s actually a mountain gazelle from Palestine. So I think that work has to do with Palestine,” Daniel Lloyd-Morgan, a 60-year-old artist told AFP.

Then on Tuesday two elephant silhouettes with their trunks stretched towards each other appeared in Chelsea, southwest London.

On Wednesday, the black silhouette of three monkeys appeared on the side of a railway bridge as if they were swinging.

“Banksy is trying to get us to think and reflect about the ecological crisis that really threatens humanity,” university professor Fawaz Gerges told AFP as he admired the latest work.

“His focus seems to be on animals, on trees, on oceans and it’s an overarching theme of his in the past few months,” he added.

The artworks have appeared at a time when England is gripped by violent far-right, anti-immigrant protests over the murder of three girls. Demonstrators have targeted hotels housing asylum seekers.

Banksy, whose identity is unknown, has repeatedly shown sympathy for the plight of refugees.

At the Glastonbury music festival last month the artist launched an inflatable boat over crowds depicting dummy migrants wearing life vests.

‘Sell-By Date’: Pieter-Dirk Uys returns to Soho Theatre  https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/sell-by-date-pieter-dirk-uys-returns-soho-theatre-london/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 07:15:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156130 South African satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys returns to Soho Theatre in London, for a one-man-show on 12 August.

PIETER-DIRK UYS RETURNS FOR LATEST ONE-MAN-SHOW

Satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys is returning for his latest one man show titled Sell-By Date at Soho Theatre in London. The show runs from 12-24 August. Uys, now 78 years old, returns after recent surgery which adds a surprising twists, delivering laughter in chaos.

Sell-By Date features not only the man, author and social activist as himself, but a parade of icons – male, female and political – bringing Londoners news and memories from life in the Rainbow Nation. The South African and British general elections will also be celebrated for the ‘mock’ in democracy and the ‘con’ in Constitution.

To find out more or buy a ticket, click here.

Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu never had a sell-by date, nor it seem do his beloved characters, Evita Bezuidenhout and Nowell Fine, but after 60 years live on stage, Uys is not surprised when he’s asked: ‘When will you retire?’ His answer is short and sweet: ‘Not re-tyre; retread!’

This 2024 performance brings London audiences Uys on top form: laughing at fears and embracing facts with his tongue firmly in your cheek.

“I love performing in London to an audience of my generation, and also to the social media TikTok adventurers. I’m an entertainer who tries to stick to the recipe of 49% anger versus 51% entertainment – not the other way round. It’s been a full-time job. Sometimes it feels as if I’m just starting,” he said.

PIETER-DIRK UYS REFLECTS ON APARTHEID

When asked what was the moment he knew political commentary would be a central component of the type of theatre he creates, he revealed it was during apartheid in South Africa.

“During the years of apartheid, every time I saw a sign that said WHITES ONLY, I knew what I had to do. Every time the apartheid government banned a play of mine, I wrote two more. The moment they tried to frighten me into silence, I rolled on red lipstick and let Evita Bezuidenhout handle it. While politics is, after all, the local drug that makes us all addicts, politics is also here today and gone tonight,” he said.

Nando’s is a South African multinational fast casual chain that specialises in Portuguese flame-grilled peri-peri style chicken.

It was founded in Rosettenville in Johannesburg in 1987 by Portugal-born Fernando Duarte and South Africa-born Robert Brozin.

Upon visiting a Portuguese-Mozambican takeaway named Chickenland and trying the chicken with peri peri, the pair bought the restaurant for about R80 000.

They renamed the restaurant Nando’s after Fernando’s first-born son.

Nando’s operates over 1 200 outlets in 30 countries.

Their logo depicts the Rooster of Barcelos, one of Portugal’s most common symbols.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 finale delivers emotional drama https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/entertainment/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-finale-delivers-emotional-drama/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 08:22:51 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2155403 The Targaryens have landed their dragons, but not in the way fans expected. The season 2 finale of House of the Dragon aired on HBO Max on Sunday night. It was a low-key episode, devoid of big battles or dramatic deaths.

Despite this, it captivated nearly 9 million viewers.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ EMOTIONAL FINALE

Geeta Vasant Patel, the director of the finale, revealed her thoughts on the episode. “I know that in the [House of the Dragon and ‘Game of Thrones’] universe, a season finale is the go-to.

You have a bunch of dragons fighting in the sky. And, I love it,” she said.

However, this finale was different, according to The New York Post.

Patel supported showrunner Ryan Condal’s vision.

“Ryan wanted to challenge that expectation with really strong dramatic storytelling, the nuts and bolts of dramaturgy,” she explained.

“Hopefully, it left you feeling something powerful.”

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ KEY CHARACTERS

The episode featured intense moments between key characters, according to Elle.

A standout scene was between Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his sister, Helaena (Phia Saban).

The two had a tense conversation on a balcony, where Aemond urged Helaena to fight for him.

Helaena, who has prophetic dreams, refused and foretold his demise.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’S’ FAMILY DYNAMICS

Patel highlighted their unique relationship. “Helaena is the only person that can really get to Aemond’s heart.

He cares about her in a way that breaks through his armour,” she noted.

“When [his mother] Alicent interacts with Aemond, he puts his armour on in defence.

But Helaena is the only person that can keep him as Aemond, and can see him as the child he is.”

Another significant moment was a secret meeting between Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke).

‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE’

‘Alicent tried to convince Rhaenyra to take the Iron Throne without bloodshed.

Patel described the scene’s conception: “Condal and writer/producer Sara Hess envisioned that scene as two friends who love each other and can’t stay apart because they’re connected from birth.”

Patel drew from her background in human rights and conflict for this scene on House of the Dragon.

“I’ve seen people go through this idea of, ‘An eye for an eye.’

If someone kills your son or daughter, you decide that the other side is inhuman because of what they did, so you respond by killing them.

Now you’ve got a problem,” she shared.

FINALE AND FAN SPECULATIONS

The House of the Dragon finale left some fans speculating about the future, according to Business Insider.

Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) discovered a dragon after agonising over her lack of one.

Book enthusiasts think this hints at her getting the Nettles plot line.

However, Patel remained coy, saying, “I don’t know the answer to that.”

The emotional depth of the finale has fans talking.

The decision to focus on relationships and character development over spectacle was bold.

CHARACTER AND STORY

Patel expressed her excitement about the direction. “I felt excited, and I definitely felt the challenge,” she said.

“It’s about creating powerful moments through character and story.”

House of the Dragon will conclude with Season 4, as announced recently.

The show, set 200 years before “Game of Thrones,” follows Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was supposed to become the Queen of Westeros.

Her brother Aegon usurped her, leading to a war.

DRAMATIC STORYTELLING

As fans await the next season, they will remember the emotional and dramatic storytelling of the finale.

Patel summed up the finale’s impact: “There is a childish juvenile level to us that comes to life in those moments.

You saw Olivia [Cooke] bite her nails and become childlike as Alicent, you saw Rhaenyra become this brat at times … those are choices the actors made.”

The House of the Dragon finale may not have had dragons battling in the sky, but it delivered powerful drama and unforgettable character moments.

Celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Gadaffi in Generations: The Legacy and nominated for an African Movie Academy Award as Tau in Five Fingers for Marseilles, Vuyo Dabula discusses his latest offering in Showmax’s film The Butcher’s Soul.

Dabula reveals that his latest character, Saul, is a capitalist, who is soulless, money-driven and tramples upon other people.

“Initially, Saul starts as a good guy, who believes in a product, but this lands himself and his team in trouble. To save himself, he needs to protect his name, leading him deeper into darker places.”

South Africa makes opera its own at home as its stars shine abroad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/culture/south-africa-makes-opera-its-own-at-home-as-its-stars-shine-abroad/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 13:34:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153721 With South African stars shining on the international stage, opera has boomed since racial barriers were scrapped in 1994, drawing in talent from the country’s great choral traditions to carve out an important place in a hugely diverse cultural landscape.

Much of the change has been driven by the 25-year-old Cape Town Opera that is considered Africa’s most successful company.

The grandfather of it all is Italian-born Angelo Gobbato, a former singer who co-founded the company five years after apartheid ended and was honoured in March with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to South African opera.

When the company was starting out, Gobbato staged Donizetti’s dramatic “Lucia di Lammermoor” with lead singers brought in from abroad.

The cast of a just-ended 25th birthday run of the same opera was entirely South African and featured only one white singer — an illustration of the changes, he said.

After white-minority rule was scrapped, “we suddenly got a lot of interest from black students who wanted to be trained in opera,” Gobbato, 81, told AFP.

“This was very unusual because at the Cape Town opera school we had so-called coloured students — non-white students — but no black students.”

Big-name singers

His students, who include the internationally acclaimed Pretty Yende and Levy Sekgapane, often came from community choirs trained in the Western signing fashion. “They responded very naturally to opera and they wanted to sing it,” said Gobbato, who has now retired.

And, as the casts have become more representative of South Africa’s racial make-up, so too have the audiences.

“I feel like a grandfather,” Gobbato said. “I haven’t got physical children or grandchildren, but seeing students I am desperately proud of them and convinced that I have done something for the good of the country.”

Opera in South Africa was once a niche performing art with mainly white audiences, said soprano Brittany Smith, the tragic heroine in this year’s run of “Lucia di Lammermoor”.

Now, “Cape Town Opera is standing on the forefront of reintroducing opera and making it more accessible to everyone and that makes us relevant,” the 29-year-old told AFP while prepping for a rehearsal at the Nelson Mandela Theatre.

Smith highlighted the company’s outreach programme that sends performers to schools and townships to show youngsters what it is all about.

The dramatic themes of opera are relevant to today’s South Africa, said her co-star Conroy Scott, a deep baritone who developed his voice in church choirs.

‘A South African genre’

“It deals with real issues, with human emotion. It deals with issues that haven’t really gone away — politics, sex, violence, child abuse, death,” the 43-year-old added.

Stagings of European opera classics post-apartheid have moulded a form that is distinctly South African in the portrayal of characters and music, with settings that are recognisable to local audiences, argued critic and author Wayne Muller.

A “La Boheme” was set in Cape Town’s District Six area that was bulldozed by the apartheid authorities, Macbeth was played as a Central African militant leader, and Porgy and Bess confessed their love in the shacks of Soweto, he wrote in his 2023 book “Opera in Cape Town: The Critic’s Voice”.

“This process of transforming the arts and opera in South Africa has not ended by any means,” Muller said.

“Nonetheless, there is an ease with opera as being African and the possibilities that even the standard Western European repertoire brings to make opera relevant here,” the critic added.

“Opera, as scholars and artists have expressed, has become a South African genre – an art form that is also from here.”

So, I feel that Mama Jane’s storyline has the potential to open up conversations about the effects of dementia in black communities and how we plan on educating ourselves about this condition,” says Moshesh.

The actress says she also liked the way the storyline gives a glimpse of who Mama Jane was before her sickness and encourages people to watch for the young talent that is on the show.
