Van Dyk replaces Norma Plummer who was in charge of the netball team during the World Cup last year, Molokwane says the new coach a perfect for the job.

Molokwane says the selection process was not an easy one but she is excited with van Dyk’s appointment as Proteas coach.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Molokwane says they are convinced van Dyk is the right person for the netball national team coaching job.

The Netball SA boss says they learned from past mistakes after appointing Dorette Badenhorst who was later fired.

WHY MOLOKWANE IS EXCITED ABOUT NEW NETBALL COACH VAN DYK

Following Badenhorst’s appointment, senior Proteas players allegedly, senior voiced concerns about her netball coaching philosophy.

”They had to go for interviews, they had to apply first – we advertised, which is something we did not do in 2019,” says Molokwane about van Dyk’s appointment.

“Safeguarding policy in sport is very important.

”We made sure that we are not taking the wrong person – who will abuse our players.

“They had to do presentations and take us through their plans for the national team.”

VAN DYK BRINGS A WINNING MENTALITY TO THE PROTEAS

Meanwhile, taking a glance at van Dyk’s achievements, Molokwane adds that winning 68 medals justifies the new coach’s hiring.

Furthermore, Molokwane also adds that Netball SA is searching for a U21 coach to replace van Dyk.

“As I said 68 medals, 17 silvers, 11 bronze,” adds Netball SA boss, Molokwane.

“Her performance has shown, you have seen how she has fared.

“We took her to under-21, not knowing that today we will be announcing her as the head coach for the senior team.

”We have an assistant coach by the name of Precious Mthembu.

“If she’s willing – she can take the team forward.”

Following a meticulous process of reviewing applications and conducting rounds of interviews, Netball South Africa has finally found the best candidate to lead the team forward and guide them to the 2027 Netball World Cup hosted down under in Australia.

“This process of appointing a head coach for the Proteas has not been easy. We wanted to ensure that we do a proper job in selecting the best person for the role. We needed to be thorough in the selection process, from interviews right through to appointment. A suitable candidate for us is an individual who can assist as we rebuild the team and begin to compete. With a few of our senior players retiring, we are starting anew, and we need a coach who will build with us. As a federation, we are confident that we have found the right person to help us do exactly that,” said Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane.

Jenny van Dyk has been given a four-year contract and will lead the team to the 2027 Netball World Cup in Australia, among other tournaments and will be assisted by former Proteas captain and Maties coach Zanele Mdodana.

“It is a fantastic feeling and quite an honour to be bestowed the responsibility to lead the national team (Proteas). I have waited so long to don this green blazer. I am also happy to be joined by Zanele; she has something that sets her soul on fire, and I believe that we will be a formidable team. As a coach for the Proteas, my objective is to continue from where my predecessor left off. We need to build a winning team – to follow a proudly South African culture of netball. We need to get into the culture of winning and having a netball identity. I believe that we are equal to the task and start competing and winning,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk has been hailed as one of the best local coaches and the most successful coach in the domestic Telkom Netball League – she has won five consecutive titles with the Tshwane-based outfit, the Jaguars.

She also has led the University of Pretoria netball team to a few finals and titles in the Varsity Cup. Prior to her appointment, she was with the under-21 team who are scheduled to play in the  Netball World Youth Cup 2025 Qualifiers in March.

Molokwane concluded by saying, “As a federation, we have full confidence in who we have chosen as our head coach, and we are certain that the team will take us to new heights and compete. On behalf of the entire netball family, I would like to wish the entire coaching staff everything of the best.

The coach’s first assignment is to assemble a group of 30 players and finalise the team that she will begin to work with as soon as possible.

Netball South Africa will communicate dates for the training camp in due course.

“Having partnered with the department of Sport Science of Stellenbosch University, we will delve into science and technology to further educate the coaches and players on how to train in order to be more effective during game time. Outsmarting your opponents begins long before you take to the court, and studying their play via video footage is one such method that we will address. “The finals will be broadcast live by broadcast partner SABC, on Sunday 18 February from 11h30 – 13h30 on SABC 2.”

Proteas star calls time on illustrious career https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/netball/proteas-star-phumza-maweni-calls-time-on-illustrious-career-breaking-news-14-december-2023/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 10:19:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1918372 After an illustrious nine-year career as a professional player, veteran Proteas player Phumza Maweni has decided to retire from her netball journey.

FOR THE LATEST NETBALL NEWS VISIT THE SOUTH AFRICAN WEBSITE

Maweni, now 39, started playing professional netball at the age of 28, she has gone on to achieve a lot of success for herself on the court.

Starting off playing for the Southern Stings in the then Brutal Fruit Netball League (now Telkom Netball League), she played for some of the best teams overseas, namely Loughborough Lightning, Severn Stars, Team Bath in the UK, and Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia.

“I have taken the time to reflect and think, and I am sad to announce that the time has come for me to gracefully exit the court, making space for the emerging stars awaiting their chance. The unwavering support of my son and family throughout my netball journey has been invaluable, and they rightfully deserve more of my time and attention. Moving forward, I intend to contribute to the sport from the sidelines, fostering growth, development, and coaching for the next generation of superstars,” said Maweni.

Maweni left Sunshine Coast Lightning and returned home in 2022 and played for and captained her home team, the Western Cape Southern Stings, during the 2023 Telkom Netball League.

“Phumza has been a great asset to the SPAR Proteas team and structure – a great player with exceptional netball talent and intelligence. When you consider how ‘late’ she started playing the sport, how quickly she broke into the team, and what she has been able to achieve, one can only attribute this to discipline and dedication. With the knowledge and experience she has acquired over the years, I think it will be wrong for us as a federation to let all of this go to waste. We need to start thinking about how we retain this knowledge and experience—we do not see her on court as a player; however, we need to find systems and structures that will enable us to utilise what Phumza has gained and knows,” said Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane.

Maweni made her Proteas debut back in 2014 against Scotland, played in three Netball World Cups, and by the time she retired, she had earned herself 121 caps, with her last match being against England in December 2023.

“The past years have exceeded all expectations, transforming into a journey of a lifetime. This sport has shaped me into a confident and powerful woman, far beyond what I could have envisioned. I cherish and acknowledge every aspect of this experience,” concluded Maweni.

“I really count myself one of the lucky ones who have the pleasure of being coached by Norma Plummer. When we were informed about her coming to coach us, I could not believe it. Working with her has really exceeded all my expectations. I think we have had it very good,” said Proteas vice-captain Karla Pretorius.

Captain Bongiwe Msomi said: “When Norma came in here, she really changed a lot – she made us to believe that we can compete and not only participate at tournaments – we can actually win. Winning became the culture within the team. I don’t think I can speak about her and not be emotional. She has really done a lot for us as players (individually) as a collectively as team. The result sees the Diamonds lifting the trophy, presented by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, for a record-extending 12th time in the history of the global showpiece.

SETTING THE SCENE FOR NETBALL WORLD CUP FINAL

Having lost out to New Zealand by just one goal in the previous Netball World Cup final in Liverpool four years ago, Australia ensured there would be no repeat scenario when they outscored England by 16 points in the final in Cape Town on Sunday.

England was playing in their first-ever Netball World Cup final after beating defending champions New Zealand in the semi-final, while the Australians were contesting their ninth consecutive gold-medal match, having never finished lower than second in the tournament’s 60-year history.

LIVE | Netball World Cup: South Africa end on LOSING note

AUSTRALIA PIPPED ENGLAND BY HALF-TIME

Australia came out firing to take a two-goal lead after the opening exchanges. England coach Jess Thirlby responded immediately, bringing on Fran Williams for Layla Guscoth at goal defence. The move proved effective, with the Roses managing to equalise at 12-12 but throwing away their opportunity to edge in front while Australia were doing well to hold onto their possession. However, there was nothing to separate the teams by the first break, as they finished the quarter all square on 13-13.

The Diamonds looked more in control after the break, showing patience to work their way around the England defence. While the Roses continued to work hard on turning the ball over, they weren’t always capitalising on the created opportunities.

That saw the Diamonds edging ahead and taking a four-goal lead into half-time.

DIAMONDS PULLED AWAY IN THE THIRD AND FOURTH QUARTERS

When the sides met on Thursday in their final group game in Cape Town, which England won by one goal, the Australians enjoyed a six-goal lead at half-time. But there would be no repeat of that wastefulness from the Diamonds this time.

True to form, the Diamonds had clearly learned from their mistakes, putting their foot down in the third quarter and looking like they were one step ahead of the Roses throughout. And while there were moments of individual brilliance from the Roses, that did little to slow the flow of Australian goals as they went into the final break 10 goals up.

That was always going to be an unlikely gap to bridge in just 15 minutes for England, who, to their credit, continued to fight until the final whistle. But with the Australians within grasp of the title they last won in 2015, the world’s top-ranked side continued to do what they do best, steadily building on their advantage to ensure they lifted the trophy for a record 12th time.

LIVE | Netball World Cup: South Africa end on LOSING note

In a rematch of their final group game just three days earlier, Proteas played Uganda in an all-African showdown for fifth place at the Netball World Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Coming into the match, Uganda were already guaranteed their highest ever finish at a Netball World Cup – their previous best being seventh place in 2019 – and they took another massive step up in 2023, dethroning the Proteas as the top side in Africa to secure fifth spot with a 49-47 victory on Sunday.

PROTEAS VS UGANDA FIRST HALF RECAP

The Ugandans came out showing their intent, turning over the first centre pass and racing to a four-goal lead before the South Africans could register on the scoreboard. Multiple unforced errors from the jittery Proteas saw them losing unnecessary possession and they spent much of the first period playing catchup. By the first break, the hosts had managed to close that gap to just one goal.

Proteas coach Norma Plummer switched Bongi Msomi to wing attack and the taller Izette Griesel to centre at the start of the second quarter as the South Africans slowly started swinging the momentum in their favour. But while the defenders earned plenty of turnovers – Jeanté Strydom particularly impressive in stealing two centre passes – the Proteas’ attack struggled to convert those into goals.

Uganda continued to throw everything at the home side, with goal attack Shadiah Nassanga eventually receiving a warning for repeated obstruction just before haltftime, which the teams reached all tied up at 23-23.

UGANDA OUTLAST SOUTH AFRICA IN SECOND HALF

The She Cranes came out looking the hungrier of the two sides in the third quarter which proved to be the decisive one. They took their time in their own attack, with Mary Cholhok and Irene Eyaru doing the business in the circle, and made the Proteas work hard for their goals.

The Ugandan defence did an excellent job of putting pressure on the usually reliable Nichole Taljaard, the star of South Africa’s draw with New Zealand earlier in the week. The goal attack was not at her best, throwing away plenty of ball and was pressured into taking fewer shots than normal.

Uganda headed into the final break with their noses in front but the Proteas managed to level matters at 40-40. The home team couldn’t push on from there, however. Yet another unforced error from the South Africans allowed Uganda to edge ahead and this time they didn’t look back, surging five goals in front at one stage.

The She Cranes still held a two-goal lead heading into the final two minutes, and they slowed things right down, looking to hold on to possession to wind down the clock, and so securing a memorable 49-47 victory.

And it proved to be too big a challenge for the South Africans to overcome, as they only managed to clinch an unconvincing 52-50 win against the spirited Ugandans, who almost pulled off a stunning comeback win over the host nation.

A proud and historic day for women’s sport in South Africa https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/a-proud-and-historic-day-for-womens-sport-in-south-africa-news-2-august-2023/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 20:35:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1721950 The South African public was treated to one of the all-time great sporting days in the country’s history today with Banyana Banyana and the Proteas’ superb performances and historic results at the Fifa Women’s World Cup and the Netball World Cup respectively.

ALSO READ: Recap — South Africa clinch stunning draw against New Zealand

Women’s sport in general has always been frowned upon in certain parts and unfortunately South Africa is one of those parts.

Blessed beyond measure with top performing national teams like the Proteas (men’s cricket team), Springboks, Blitzboks, and to an extent Bafana Bafana; along with a host of well catalogued provincial teams that shine bright in nationally and on the international scene whenever the opportunity arise to do so.

So teams like Banyana Banyana the Proteas netball team, the Proteas women’s cricket team and the Springbok Women’s side don’t feature too high on the average sporting fan’s list of priorities.

But when you get days like today with achievements like the ones Banyana and the Proteas produced attached to it, it is much deeper than just being a jovial day which will serve long in the memory. It helps break down the stereotypes and stigmas (that I don’t care to mention here) often associated with women’s sport and women in sport.

BANYANA BANYANA SHOW ITALY FLAMES ON BIGGEST STAGE

Banyana stunned and impressed the world in equal measure when they claimed a last-gasp come-from-behind 3-2 win over the much higher ranked Italy to book their place in the round of 16 at the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

It is the first time EVER that a South African national soccer team has made it out of the group stage of the global showpiece tournament. Sorry, Bafana Banafa, but Banyana Banyana have just eclipsed everything you’ve every achieved.

PROTEAS TAKE STING OUT OF SILVER FERNS IN SOUTH AFRICA

A few hours later in the same day, the Proteas did the almost unthinkable when courtesy of a buzzer beater they managed to snatch an enthralling 48-48 draw with the world number side, the Silver Ferns. The share of the spoils means that the Proteas still have a mathematic chance of qualifying for the Netball World Cup semi-finals.

For that to happen, the Proteas need to beat Uganda by a goal difference of +75.

Permutations aside, the Proteas showed that they have what it takes to compete with the best of the best on the biggest stage of all.

THRILLING RESULTS WITH LONG LASTING EFFECTS

What today’s results also prove are that women’s sports and female athletes in South Africa deserve an equal standing as their male compatriots.

Judging by the buzz of excitement, from various federations and fans on social media, we are heading in that direction.

Long may it continue and long may Banyana and the Proteas continue to defy that odds and break down stereotypical barriers.

Netball World Cup: The Rise of Shorter Players https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/netball/netball-world-cup-the-rise-of-shorter-players-02-august-2023/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 10:22:50 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1721122 Let’s have a look at the extraordinary impact of shorter players at the Netball World Cup, as they defy height norms with exceptional skills and boundless energy. These athletes have shattered stereotypes, proving that size doesn’t define their capabilities on the court.

SHORTER PLAYERS DAZZLING THE COURT

KHANYISA CHAWANE

Chawane, the midcourt playmaker of the Proteas team, is pivotal to their game strategy. Everything revolves around her as she skillfully feeds the ball to the taller players in the shooting circle, while also contributing on defence with great interceptions. Standing at 1.65m, her exceptional agility and speed demonstrate that shorter players can dominate the centre court and be a driving force in their team’s success.

KHADIJA WILLIAMS

In a team that includes towering athletes, Williams stands out as an absolute machine on the court. Her smaller stature, at 1.65m, provides a unique challenge for opponents, yet she has proven to be an unsung hero for the Jamaican team. With her exceptional skills and relentless energy, she has become a key player, contributing significantly to their success.

SHANICE BECKFORD

At 170cm, Jamaican player Shanice Beckford’s contrast with her towering GS partner, Jhaniele Fowler (1.96m), is remarkable. She excels as a playmaker, delivering perfect passes to Fowler, while also showcasing impressive shooting skills herself. With their height difference and differentiated threats, guarding both Fowler and Beckford poses a challenging task for opponents, as they dominate the court and create scoring opportunities.

EMMA LOVE

Scotland boasts their own dynamo in Emma Love, a workhorse who tirelessly runs both herself and defenders ragged in every game. Standing at 174cm, the wing attack brings an abundance of energy off the bench for the Scottish team.

TAKONDWA LWAZI

Standing at just 1.60m, Takondwa Lwazi is the shortest athlete on the list, but her height hasn’t stopped her from making an impact on the court. With an impressive 97 caps for Malawi, Lwazi has proven that she can hold her own and be a valuable asset to the Malawian team.

FUNMI FADOJU

Although Fadoju is the tallest among the shorter players listed, standing at 1.76m, she defies the stereotype of her position. Despite often finding herself on the wrong side of a 20cm deficit against tall attackers, Fadoju manages to execute impressive blocks and intercepts, displaying her determination and skill as a standout defender. Her remarkable athleticism and defensive prowess make her a game-changer for the England team, proving that height doesn’t dictate impact on the netball court. Don’t be surprised if she wins player of the tournament.

STEPH WOOD

Steph Wood, a netball veteran, stands as the original pioneer for shorter players in this giant’s sport. At 1.75m tall, she has defied expectations with her exceptional long-range shooting, akin to her namesake Steph Curry in basketball. Wood’s precision and scoring ability have made her a formidable force on the court, inspiring a new generation of netball players to embrace their strengths and challenge traditional norms in the sport.

These shorter players are proving that height isn’t a barrier to success, but rather an alternate entrance in netball. With their exceptional skills, agility, and determination, they are dazzling fans and leaving their mark on the court, As the sport evolves, it’s clear that the future holds even more opportunities for players of all sizes to shine brightly on the international stage.

With Tuesday serving as a break day for the two teams, the SPAR Proteas are scheduled to clash against New Zealand’s Silver Ferns in second preliminary stage group G encounter on Wednesday.

According to TimesLive, Taurua and Plummer, who both Australian, have a shared history from the days when they coached in the former trans-Tasman league. Plummer was in charge of the Perth-based West Coast Fever while Taurua coached Plenty Magic of Waikato Bay.

When asked if she’ll enjoy coaching against her compatriot again, Taurua immediately said ‘no, not particularly’ and went on to explain that Plummer scares her.

“Not particularly, she scares the s**t out of me. She is awesome, she is one of the best, she is a legend and I have so much respect for her,” Taurua explained ahead of their crunch Netball World Cup showdown.

PREVIEWING THE PROTEAS VS NEW ZEALAND SHOWDOWN

Looking ahead to her teams match against the SPAR Proteas, Taurua admitted to knowing they’ll not just be up against the South Africa team on the court, but also the partisan home crowd, who has been vocal in support of their team throughout the tournament.

“I think during the game against Jamaica [a first stage defeat for South Africa] they [the Proteas] may not have been happy with what they put up because I know they are a better team. I have so much respect for ‘Plums’ [Plummer] and it’s all on.”

Potgieter Injury Shakes Up Proteas’ Lineup – NWC2023 Update https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/netball/potgieter-injury-shakes-up-proteas-lineup-nwc2023-update-1-august-2023/ Tue, 01 Aug 2023 12:21:20 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1719179 In a major setback for the South African netball team, prolific goal shooter Lenize Potgieter has been ruled out of the remainder of the NWC2023 due to a knee injury. Potgieter’s absence leaves the Proteas with a reshuffled lineup and creates challenges for the team ahead of crucial matchups.

POTGIETER JOINS NWEKE ON THE SIDELINES

In a disappointing turn of events for the South African netball team, they have suffered a significant setback with the loss of their sharpshooter, Lenize Potgieter, due to knee issues. This unfortunate news comes in the aftermath of New Zealand’s Grace Nweke being ruled out of the tournament on Monday morning. Potgieter, who was unable to participate in the opening two rounds of the World Cup, finally made her NWC2023 debut against a strong ‘Sunshine Girls’ outfit. Despite heavily strapping both knees, she showcased her determination by playing three quarters against the relentless defender Shameera Sterling. However, her valiant efforts were cut short, and her absence will surely be felt by the Proteas.

NGUBANE TO REPLACE POTGIETER

To address the absence of Lenize Potgieter, South Africa has called up reserve Owethu Ngubane to join the Proteas squad. Ngubane, who made her World Cup debut against Trinidad and Tobago, has shown promise and potential during her limited appearances. While filling Potgieter’s shoes is a challenging task, Ngubane’s talent and determination make her a valuable addition to the team.

VENTER TO STEP UP

In the absence of Potgeiter, the in-form Ine-Marí Venter has a golden opportunity to shine as a key player for the Proteas. Venter’s outstanding partnership with Taljaard and her experience in England’s Netball Superleague, playing for Saracens Mavericks, make her a formidable contender for the first-choice shooter position. However, she faces competition from Elmerè van der Berg, whose temperament will be closely scrutinized as the potential rival for the goal shooter position.

PROTEAS LINE UP RESHUFFLE

With Lenize Potgieter’s injury causing a reshuffled attacking lineup for the Proteas, the onus falls to Ine-Marí Venter to step up as the first-choice goal shooter. Nichole Taljaard’s exceptional back-to-back MVP performances make her a vital component in the new setup, retaining her position as the starting goal attack. Meanwhile, Elmerè van der Berg will drop to backup goal shooter, as rookie Ngubane will be a competent goal attack alternative. Coach Norma Plummer has her hands full for the remainder of the NWC2023.

SA VS NZ MATCHUP

The news of Potgieter’s injury adds further intrigue to the upcoming clash between South Africa and New Zealand. Both teams will be missing their first-choice shooters: Nweke and Potgieter. With defending champions New Zealand unbeaten and fifth ranked South Africa having lost 1 match, this match carries significant implications for the tournament’s semifinal standings. A victory for New Zealand would likely secure their semifinal berth, while a win for South Africa would swing the door wide open for the semi-final race in Group G.

As the NWC2023 progresses, injuries are proving to be a major factor influencing team dynamics and match outcomes. Teams must rely on their depth and resilience to overcome such setbacks, and the upcoming match between South Africa and New Zealand promises to be a thrilling battle as both sides seek to secure their place in the tournament’s later stages.

NETBALL WORLD POOL G AS IT STANDS

Following Sunday’s loss against Jamaica, South Africa bounced back to winning ways on Monday night with a commanding 69-28 victory over Trinidad & Tobago – a team that is ranked six places under them — in the newly formed Pool G for the Preliminaries Stage 2 — “Super Six” — of the tournament.

Pool G consists of the Proteas, Jamaica, New Zealand, Wales, Uganda and Trinidad & Tobago. New Zealand and Jamaica top the Pool standings with six points – four points carried over from Stage 1 – with South Africa in third position on four points. Only the top two teams qualify for the semi-finals.

PERMUTATIONS FROM SA PERSPECTIVE

Having already beating Trinidad & Tobago, the Proteas still have to face New Zealand and Uganda in the Preliminaries Stage 2. But what are the permutations for them to secure a semi-final berth at the 2023 Netball World Cup?

Well, this is what needs to happen:

— The Spar Proteas simply have to beat both New Zealand and Uganda and they’ll go through to the next round.
— If the Proteas lose to New Zealand, they need a win against Uganda and hope New Zealand beat Jamaica.
— Another possible route to the last four for the Proteas is if New Zealand lose both their remaining Pool G games against South Africa and Jamaica.

Nweke out with injury, SA hopes alive – NWC2023 Update https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/netball/nweke-out-with-injury-sa-hopes-alive-nwc2023-update-breaking-31-july-2023/ Mon, 31 Jul 2023 13:07:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1717628 Breaking news this morning from New Zealand’s GS Grace Nweke, who has been ruled out of the Netball World Cup due to a knee injury. As one of the team’s top talents, her absence leaves a huge hole in the Silver Ferns’ lineup, impacting their chances in the tournament.

GRACE NWEKE’S INJURY LEAVES HOLE IN SILVER FERNS’ LINEUP

Grace Nweke, the talented 21-year-old player representing New Zealand at NWC2023, has suffered a severe blow as she is ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury. Earlier this year, Nweke stood out as the Netball Quad Series player and shooter of the tournament, showcasing her skills and earning accolades for her remarkable performance. Tiana Metuarau replaces the injured Nweke, while an accomplished player, Nweke’s presence will be missed.

ALSO READ: Proteas taste defeat against dominant Jamaica

A CRUCIAL ROLE ON THE COURT

Grace Nweke is a key player for the Silver Ferns, standing tall as one of the tallest competitors in the championship. Her playing style is reminiscent of her Jamaican counterpart, Jhaniele Fowler, as she uses her height advantage and physicality to her advantage. Nweke’s ability to create space and score with ease in the circle makes her a formidable force on the court. Her unique skill set will undoubtedly be missed by the team during the rest of the Netball World Cup.

Silver Ferns head coach Dame Noeline Taurua says Nweke injury is a huge blow.

“We are hugely disappointed for Grace who was competing at her first Netball World Cup,” Taurua said. “She provides a unique skill set for our team and will be massively missed.”

ALSO READ: Proteas remain unbeaten at Netball World Cup

PROTEAS SEE A GLIMMER OF HOPE

While the news of Grace Nweke’s injury is a setback for the Silver Ferns, it presents an opportunity for their upcoming opponents, the Proteas. The two teams are set to face off on Wednesday, 2nd August at 6:00 PM, and South Africa’s netball team is well aware of the significance of the match. The Proteas need a strong performance and a positive outcome to keep their World Cup medal hopes alive. Facing the defending champions without the formidable presence of Nweke in the lineup could be a stroke of luck for the Proteas. It presents them with a chance to exploit any vulnerabilities in the Silver Ferns’ offense and strive for a strong result that could propel them further in the tournament.

ALSO READ: Proteas coach impressed with her troops after win over Wales

NEW ZEALAND STILL A THREAT

New Zealand will still be a huge threat going forward; they are a classy outfit with talented players across the board, such as Phoenix Karaka, Karin Burger, and Whitney Souness. With SA thoroughly beaten by Jamaica in the group stages, New Zealand without Nweke is still a considerable challenge.

AS THE NWC2023 PROGRESSES

As the NWC2023 progresses, both the Silver Ferns and the Proteas will need to adapt to the changing circumstances. While the injury to Grace Nweke is a significant setback for New Zealand, it offers an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void. On the other hand, the Proteas must capitalize on this situation and bring their A-game to the court to capitalize on their chances. Injuries are an unfortunate aspect of competitive sports, and they often test a team’s depth and resilience. The NWC2023 will continue to witness thrilling matchups, and only time will tell how this development will impact the overall tournament dynamics.

PROTEAS VS SUNSHINE GIRLS MATCH RECAP

This game was always going to be a tough one for both teams who are ranked 4th and 5th respectively. Both teams came into this game very high in confidence after securing two wins each before today. The match was evenly contested in three of the four quarters, but Jamaica’s outright dominance in the third was ultimately what swung the result in their favour.

Trailing just 32-26 after the second quarter, the South Africans were simply outclassed in the third quarter. Sunshine Girls pulled away on the scoreboard, racking up 20 goals with Jhaniele Fowler leading the way, while conceding just three in the same period.

The Proteas were much better in the final quarter, outscoring the visitors 20 to 15, but it was too little too late as the damage had already been done, paving the way for a 67–49 win for Jamaica.

WHAT WAS SAID AFTER FIRST NETBALL WORLD CUP LOSS

“We went into this match knowing that it was going to be a tough game, I mean seven of their players are playing in the Super League, that showed today,” Plummer explained.

“Our players did well, we had a few mistakes that cost us dearly, but I think these are things we can work on. No one wants to lose but there are lessons we are taking out of this – the journey doesn’t stop here, we have a few more games to go and anything can happen from here onwards,” she added.

“We will need to be better prepared for our remaining fixtures if we are to go all the way, we are not naïve to assume or think that it will be any easier – we must take the lessons, apply them and see what happens from there.”

The Proteas will now play against Trinidad & Tobago in the newly formed Group G at 18:00 on Monday 31 July 2023. Their two other clashes will be against current World Champions New Zealand and fellow Africans Uganda.

Ine-Mari Venter, who was the player of the match against Wales on Friday, was replaced by Nichole Taljaard, who seems to be just as red-hot. In the first quarter, van der Berg and Taljaard’s axis performed admirably to form the basis of the Proteas game.

In just 15 minutes, South Africa sprinted out to a 15-goal advantage. The Proteas were unstoppable, putting Sri Lanka firmly on the back foot with their interceptions and deft passing.

Coach Plummer made adjustments in the second half, much like she did against the Welsh on Friday.

Irvette Grisel was replaced at centre by Chanyisa Chawane, and captain Msomi was also benched. In addition, when Karla Pretorius replaced Shadine van der Merwe, she earned her 100th cap for the Proteas.

South African supporters remained loud as the third quarter’s finish drew near as their team continued to dominate the game.

It was an emotional opening game for the Proteas with Player of the Match Ine-Marie Venter shedding a tear during the national anthems.

“Our first quarter was absolutely sensational. We got off to a great start. We have been a bit slow in that area,” Plummer said.

“But we knew Wales would change up their game, and they did. They set up the press in the middle, which meant we had to slow up the game. I thought we handled it quite well in the second quarter.

“I thought they went up a notch in the third, and then we started to spray a few balls, and that was disappointing. We went too wide. What do we get out of that? We know we have a lot to work on. We will need to get some work on that.”

COACH PLUMMER PROUD WITH PROTEAS’ PERFORMANCE

Formerly in charge of England where she won the prestigious World Cup title, Plummer expressed delight in the overall performance but expressed a few concerns.

She said the dip in performance through the middle period was due to her players adjusting to being together again.

This year marks both the first time in South Africa’s history that they will host the Netball World Cup and the debut of the tournament on the African continent.

South Africa came in fourth place at the most recent Netball World Cup, held in Liverpool in 2019.

The hosts of this year’s tournament have been in the top three in two Netball World Cups, once in Perth 1967 when they placed third and their best performance in Birmingham 1995 when they placed second.

Wales in NWC

Wales participated in the inaugural Netball World Cup (also known as the World Tournament), which was held in Eastbourne in 1963, and placed 10th overall. They have twice achieved joint sixth place in the Netball World Cup, at the Port of Spain World Tournament in 1979 and the Auckland 1975 World Tournament. The most recent Netball World Cup, in Liverpool 2019, was missed by Wales.

Being selected to the NWC team has been a lifelong dream for me. It is a huge privilege and only through the mercy of the Lord. I stay focused, because I need to be my best, not only for myself, but for my team and country. We have a goal, and everyone must be on form to accomplish that goal.

What is special about a World Cup at home?

As a coach who inspires and uplifts young girls to bring out the best in them and help them achieve their dreams.

Your advice to girls who feel barriers are blocking their dreams?
