Continuing to lead the charge for horse racing in South Africa, Betway and 4Racing are proud to announce an increase in this year’s Summer Cup to a record-breaking R6 million.

The increase in prize money makes this the richest race in Africa and further highlights Betway’s commitment to sport in the continent, while recognising and celebrating both the sport and the country’s rich history, alongside being committed to being a key driver in the sport’s growth.

Betway Summer Cup race date

“This is the third year in partnering with 4Racing for the Betway Summer Cup – a renowned event where racing heritage meets urban sophistication. Our commitment to this relationship underscores our dedication to both the sport of horse racing and the vibrant community that it engages. The R6 million stakes this year (up from R5 million in 2023) is a thrilling incentive not only in making history, but also set to elevate excitement among stakeholders and spectators alike. We look forward to showcasing South Africa’s best race horses, fashion and entertainment taking place at Turffontein racecourse, on 30 November 2024,” said Jonathan Blumberg – Betway Africa

In addition to the stakes, the grooms with horses in the Betway Summer Cup race, who are also an integral part to horseracing and particularly on the day, will also be acknowledged for their role and automatically will receive a R20 000 prize.

‘Lifeblood of the sport’

“Grooms are the lifeblood of the sport; their dedication for and love of horses, knows no bounds, so we want to celebrate them and thank them for their continued hard work in the sport,” Blumberg added.

“The Betway Summer Cup is distinctly Joburg and with Betway’s support, we have now transformed the People’s Race into Africa’s Richest Race with an extraordinary R6 million stakes. This stake will no doubt attract interest from owners and trainers from around the country. Our mission is to also gather people from all walks of life to experience the glamour and adrenaline of what promises to be a phenomenal race day. This event is the start of Gauteng’s festive season – and what better way to do it than celebrating with Silks In the City – the theme for the 2024 Betway Summer Cup,” remarked Fundi Sithebe, 4Racing CEO”.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: What time does the race start? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/hollywoodbets-durban-july/hollywoodbets-durban-july-what-time-does-the-race-start-question-result/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 05:29:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2134341 The 128th renewal of the R5 million Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July will take place at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 6 July.

The race is the seventh on the 12-race card and will be contested over 2 200m.

The gates will fly open at 16:00.

The first race is due off at 11:45 with the final race scheduled for 19:40.

Sport fans will thus be able to catch the race live on TV and then switch over to watch the Springboks take on Ireland at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria at 17:00.

Late scratching

Meanwhile, as reported by The South African website, Cape trainer Justin Snaith’s Without Question was withdrawn from Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Durban July late on Thursday afternoon.

As a result, first reserve stablemate Hluhluwe will take to the stalls.

Hluhluwe was down to run in Race 3 on the day, but has been withdrawn from that race.

Jono Snaith told the Sporting Post that Without Question was given his final workout by jockey Rachel Venniker on Thursday morning, but sadly pulled up rather lame on his near-hind.

“After examination, it was apparent that the injury will rule him out for the remainder of this season and he will have a holiday before returning to the Cape for the Summer Season. This was a sad day for his connections, but he is a horse who will be back for the Grade 1 Cape Town Met as he is a young gelding (four-year old),” added Snaith.

Venniker will ride replacement Hluhluwe, so remains the only female jockey in the race’s history.

Latest odds

A capacity field of 18 horses will contest the 128th renewal of the race on Saturday.

Race sponsors Hollywoodbets have updated their odds for the race.

Dean Kannemeyer’s three-year-old colt Green With Envy is the current favourite at 9/2, with Michael Roberts’s star See It Again at 11/2.

Future Swing for Justin Snaith and Oriental Charm from the Brett Crawford yard are both quoted at 8/1.

Royal Victory follows at 10/1, with defending champion Winchester Mansion on offer at 25/2.

Hluhluwe, meanwhile, is quoted at 25/1.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: Rachel Venniker to make history as first woman to ride in famous race https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/hollywoodbets-durban-july/hollywoodbets-durban-july-rachel-venniker-history-first-woman/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 10:15:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2133840 South African jockey Academy graduate Rachel Venniker will make history on Saturday as the first woman to ride in the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

She might have achieved this feat last year but for a freak accident that left her unable to take part in the race.

“We were in the stalls, nearly ready for the gate to open, when my filly just reared up and I hit my head on the top of the gate.

“They said it was whiplash and I was booked off for two weeks. I was devastated,” she said.

Trailblazer says that making Durban July history is no big deal

Riding the gelding Without Question, owned by Justin Snaith, Venniker said the fact that she is the first female jockey to compete in the Durban July is not something that she focuses on. “It’s not a big deal,” she said in a very relaxed way.

And it’s precisely that temperament that may assist her to make history if she pips her rivals to the post and crosses the finishing line first.

Local hero

On the back of her recent success at the Met in Cape Town, where she came third, Venniker said she is confident that things may go well on July 6 when she competes in Africa’s Greatest Horserace.

Jonsson Workwear owner Nick Jonsson is her sponsor. “I first met his father Benjy at the Jockey Academy. Everyone loved him, so I was so proud when he (Nick) agreed to sponsor me,” she said.

Venniker rides for the Michael Roberts stable.

Rachel Venniker keeps making history

Earlier this year she flashed past the post and won Saudi Arabia’s Invest Saudi International Jockeys Challenge Stakes making history overseas. She became the first South African female rider to win in the desert Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the first South African female to defeat male rivals such as Ryan Moore (whose mount ran third) and former Australian legend Damien Oliver (fifth).

Having just completed her apprenticeship a month ago It was Venniker’s first trip out of South Africa and her first big-race win as a fully-fledged jockey

The value of the race – (US) $400,000 or R7,63m – is more than the purses of the WSB Met and the Hollywoodbets July combined.

She rode British bred Cliffs of Fury, owned by Saudi Refaei Sanat Alghuraban and trained by Nawaf Fawaz.

Venniker has been on the back of a horse since she was four years old, is born in KwaZulu-Natal and lives at Summerveld. Both her parents were show jumpers and she simply wanted to follow in their footsteps.

In a male-dominated world, Rachel is unafraid of the dangers and challenges being a jockey can bring. She did say she has a few false teeth, and other injuries but would not change it for the world.

Race sponsors Hollywoodbets have updated their odds for the race.

Dean Kannemeyer’s three-year-old colt Green With Envy is the current joint favourite alongside Michael Roberts’s star See It Again at 9/2.

Future Swing for Justin Snaith is at 6/1, followed by Oriental Charm from the Brett Crawford yard at 8/1.

Royal Victory (10/1) and Flag Man (25/2) follow next.

Defending champion Winchester Mansion, as well as Future Pearl, can be backed at 16/1.

Justin Snaith boasts four runners

While the fairer sex are absent this year among the equine ranks, Turffontein-based Robyn Klaasen standing tall as the rose among the trainer thorns, with her dual Grade 1 winner Purple Pitcher one of seven sophomores in the line-up.

Reigning South African Champion trainer Justin Snaith has saddled five Durban July winners and has three runners (plus one reserve) in this year’s field.

Sean Tarry has enjoyed a great season, and is looking for his third winner as he saddles a power duo of Cousin Casey and recent Tabgold Grade 3 winner Future Pearl, the latter to be ridden by Grant van Niekerk, who was originally engaged to ride first reserve, Hluhluwe.

Still a force after three decades, Mike de Kock is looking to add to his July tally of five winners with his duo of 2022 Grade 1 SA Derby winner, Aragosta, and the enigmatic Shoemaker.

Aragosta was a selection panel casualty last year, and his connections would have been pleased with his forward performance behind Future Pearl in the Derby recently, which makes him a lively runner.

The De Kock pair drew alongside each other at 6 and 7.

Defending champion Brett Crawford has a strong hand with the lightly raced 2023 hero Winchester Mansion and 3-year-old Oriental Charm carrying his flag.

Winchester Mansion drew 9, while Oriental Charm drew 11.

Dean Kannemeyer pulled gate 5 and looks to saddle a second Hollywoodbets Durban July winner for Khaya Stables after Power King in 2015. He holds the key with current favourite Green With Envy.

Owner Peter Victor drew the pole position gate for Royal Victory, who looks to give the hometown a long overdue victory in the big race.

The Durban July: Africa’s Greatest Horse Racing Event https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/the-durban-july-africas-greatest-horse-racing-event/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 07:08:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2128805 The Durban July, sometimes known as the Hollywoodbets Durban July, is a prestigious, Grade One horse racing event held each year at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse in Durban.

The prize purse for the event currently stands at R5 million.

The event, held every July, as the name suggests, has become one of South Africa’s biggest spectacles, expanding far beyond just horse racing. Now, the Hollywoodbets Durban July has positioned itself as a leading fashion and entertainment event, attracting visitors from around the world.

Each year, the theme for the event is announced in February or March, giving attendees plenty of opportunity to prepare.

The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse

The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse hosts nine Grade One races during the South African Champions Season. Located near the Durban Golden Mile beachfront and the Royal Durban Golf Club, the course is a right-handed, pear-shaped track.

The racecourse is named, in part, after its title sponsor, Hollywoodbets, a South African sports betting operator.

The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse is home to an uphill section between the 2200m and 1800m mark, followed by a gentle downward slope until the 1200m point. Another uphill section can be found between the 1000m and the straight, which is relatively level and 450m long.

The Durban July in 2024

In 2024, the 128th Durban July will be held on Saturday 6th July, and the theme for the event is “Ride the Wave”.

There are eighteen runners on the final field, including some of the country’s best middle-distance horses. The horses and their jockeys include:

  • Royal Victory – Muzi Yeni
  • Barbaresco – Gavin Lerena
  • Without Question – Rachel Venniker
  • Future Swing – Richard Fourie
  • Green With Envy – Craig Zackey
  • Shoemaker – Diego De Gouveia
  • Aragosta – Marco V’Rensburg

  • Hluhluwe (Reserve)
  • Hotarubi (Reserve)

The above list includes some notable names, including last year’s winner (Winchester Mansion) and runner-up (See It Again). Rachel Venniker, riding Without Question, will get her first opportunity to ride in the Hollywoodbets Durban July, after her intended horse was withdrawn at the last minute in 2023.

Other Races at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse (2024)

There are seven other supporting races taking place on July 6th, 2024 at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, including:

  • SplashOut 2200 (2200m)
  • DStv Gold Vase (3000m)

The History of the Durban July

The Hollywoodbets Durban July has been held every year since 1897, and the very first race, the Durban Turf Club Handicap (1600m), was won by a horse called Campanajo. The prize purse for the very first Durban July race was 500 sovereigns. Despite its current popularity, only 3,000 attendees were present at the inaugural event.

Fast forward to the present day and the Durban July is regularly attended by more than 50,000 visitors, who revel in the grandeur of the occasion.

The distance of the race has also increased since 1897, changing to 1670m in 1906, then to 1800m in 1913 and 2000m in 1915. It wasn’t until 1941 that the distance was changed again, this time to 2100m. In 1970m the race was set at 2200m, which is how it has remained since.

The most recent winners of the Durban July include:

  • 2023 – Winchester Mansion
  • 2022 – Sparkling Water
  • 2021 – Kommetdieding
  • 2020 – Belgarion
  • 2019 – Do It Again
  • 2018 – Do It Again
  • 2017 – Marinaresco
  • 2016 – The Conglomerate
  • 2015 – Power King
  • 2014 – Legislate

Hollywoodbets Durban July’s Most Famous Horses

Since the event’s inception, there have been several notable horses:

  • Sea Cottage: Shot just weeks before the 1966 iteration of the event, Sea Cottage placed fourth, despite still having the bullet lodged in his hind quarter. Sea Cottage returned to the Durban July a year later, where he finished in a dead heat.
  • El Picha: El Picha was the first horse in 50 years to win the Durban July twice, placing first in both 1999 and 2000.
  • Do It Again: Trained by Justin Snaith, Do It Again won the Durban July consecutively in 2018 and 2019.

Interesting Facts About the Durban July

Given its extensive history, it’s hardly surprising that some fascinating bits of information have arisen from the event over the years. Did you know:

  • Only one two-year-old horse has ever won the Durban July, and that was in 1911.
  • Only five horses have ever won the event back-to-back: Campanajo (1897/98), Corriecrian (1907/1908), Milesia Pride (1949/50), El Picha (1999/2000) and Do It Again (2018/19).
  • The biggest Durban July field was in 1917, when 33 horses lined up at the start.
  • The smallest Durban July fields were in 1897 and 1908, when seven horses lined up at the start.
  • There have only ever been two winning dead heats since the race was founded, once in 1967 (Jollify and Sea Cottage) and then again in 2008 (Pocket Power and Dancer’s Daughter).

Durban July: More Than Just a Horse Race

The Hollywoodbets Durban July Fashion Experience, as presented by the Durban Fashion Fair, sits alongside the racing event every year. The fashion extravaganza takes place both digitally and in print in the months leading up to July, but is also held as a “virtual experience” on the actual race day for DStv viewers.

Once the event theme is announced each year, design students throughout KwaZulu-Natal compete for the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: Introducing the Class of 2024 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/hollywoodbets-durban-july-introducing-the-class-of-2024/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 11:12:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2127924 The final field draw for the Hollywoodbets Durban July took place on Tuesday 25 June at the Bond Shed in eThekwini’s Point area.

An interesting aspect of the latest renewal is the absence of any representatives of the fairer sex amongst the equine ranks. However, Robyn Klaasen flies the flag for the ladies among the trainers, while Rachel Venniker – so unlucky to miss out on the race last year after a freak injury – returns aboard Justin Snaith’s WITHOUT QUESTION.

Dean Kannemeyer’s colt GREEN WITH ENVY tops the betting boards early on. The son of Gimmethegreenlight claimed the Daily News 2000 and will look to kick on and claim first prize at the big dance on Hollywoodbets Durban July day. Craig Zackey retains the ride and will look to pilot this three-year-old to a fifth win on the trot.

Last year’s runner-up SEE IT AGAIN will get another crack at glory with Piere Strydom aboard. Trained by Michael Roberts, this four-year-old carries top weight and jumps from gate 10. He ran a creditable third in the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge but arguably does his best work over a bit further than the mile.

Record-breaking jockey Richard Fourie will be aboard Justin Snaith’s FUTURE SWING. This gelding has won all three of his starts over 1900m or more, most recently claiming the Grade 2 WSB 1900 at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Available at around 5/1 at the first show, write him off at your own peril.

Last year’s winning trainer Brett Crawford’s ORIENTAL CHARM has campaigned twice in Durban since arriving from the Cape, running second to FUTURE SWING in the WSB 1900 before winning the Gr3 Hollywoodbets Dolphins Cup Trial over 1800 metres in early June. JP van der Merwe is on board and will fancy his chances.

Hollywoodbets Durban July. Image: Supplied

FLAG MAN has only ever run in one graded contest but managed a second in the Gr1 Daily News 2000, albeit in very soft conditions. The three-year-old is trained by Gareth van Zyl with Serino Moodley aboard.

Defending champion WINCHESTER MANSION ran a disappointing eighth in the Betway Summer Cup but followed that up with a fine second in the Gr1 World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge. He’s obviously being primed for a proper go at the July with his last run way back in early April.

Robyn Klaasen’s sole runner PURPLE PITCHER will make his coastal bow in the Hollywoodbets Durban July having spent his career campaigning on the Highveld. A disappointing seventh in the Jubilee Stakes two weeks ago was preceded by back-to-back wins in the TAB SA Classic and the TAB SA Derby – the second and third legs of the SA Triple Crown.

Tony Peter ventures down the N3 to the coast with two arrows in his quiver for the Hollywoodbets Durban July in the form of SON OF RAJ and MERIDIUS. The former hasn’t won since the 2023 SA Derby while the latter put in a fine performance to claim the Jubilee Stakes at a starting price of 10/1.

Johan Janse van Vuuren is unleashing another Gauteng raider in the form of BARBARESCO. Interesting to note that former Hollywoodbets Durban July -winning jockey Gavin Lerena retains the ride and will have to get down to 53,5 kgs before Saturday 6 July. Perhaps hy weet nie wat ons weet nie

Snaith’s other Hollywoodbets Durban July 2024 runners include WSB Cape Town Met winner DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE who will have UK-based Hollywoodbets-sponsored jockey Dan Muscutt aboard and WITHOUT QUESTION, who gets the services of Rachel Venniker.

The improving COUSIN CASEY is a dark horse for this year’s race, and you won’t go broke backing this colt, who burst onto the scene as a two-year-old, at 25/1. Former Hollywoodbets Durban July winning jockey S’manga Khumalo will be in the irons. ARAGOSTA is another seasoned campaigner who gets a crack after narrowly missing out on the final field last year.

New Turf Carriers Western Cape Stayers winner MASTER REDOUTE and SHOEMAKER may find the class of this field too hot to handle, although both are favourably weighted and could feature in the quartets.  You can bet on all of your fancies with Hollywoodbets. They also giving away an incredible R2 million in prizes including a VW Golf 8 GTI, and Omoda C5; R360 000 in betting vouchers and R300 000 in cash up until the end of July. To enter, take a horseracing bet to the value of R50 or more and opt-in once on their promotions page for all of your qualifying bets to be entered.

The final 20 runners, 18 participants and 2 reserve runners, will be announced on Tuesday, 25 June at an event that will be broadcast live on SuperSport Variety 3 (DSTV Channel 208), Gallop TV (www.galloptv.co.za) and Racing 240 (DSTV Channel 240) from 12:20.

Thereafter, connections of the top 18 horses will draw their respective starting stall positions.

With a number of recent scratchings of horses that were included in the final Hollywoodbets Durban July Log published on 11 June, there are a few horses looking to sneak into the final places of the top 18, for a crack at a share of the R5 million stakes on offer.

Meanwhile, race sponsors Hollywoodbets have updated their odds for next month’s race.

Dean Kannemeyer’s three-year-old colt Green With Envy is the current favourite at 33/10.

Michael Roberts’ star See It Again, who disappointed with a below-par run in the WSB Cape Town Met at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in late January when finishing fourth in a field of 11, is next best at 4/1.

Future Swing for Justin Snaith is at 6/1, followed by Oriental Charm from the Brett Crawford yard at 8/1.

Flag Man is available at 25/2, while Royal Victory is on offer at 14/1.

Defending champion Winchester Mansion can be backed at 16/1.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: Dave The King withdrawn https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/hollywoodbets-durban-july/hollywoodbets-durban-july-latest-odds-updated-result-date-greyville/ Tue, 18 Jun 2024 08:44:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2110476 Dave The King, the winner of the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge at Hollywoodbets Greyville 10 days ago, has been withdrawn from the 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July, following a decision taken by his connections.

Trainer Mike de Kock said on Tuesday: “After consulting with his owners, we have decided to take him out of the July and aim him at the Grade 1 HKJC Champions Cup on Gold Cup Day,  Sunday, 27 July.

“Dave The King has proven that his best form is between 1 600m and 1 800m. He finished 5.50-lengths behind Winchester Mansion in last year’s July, it was just too far for him. Also, after he was gelded he was beaten four lengths in the Summer Cup over 2 000m, just running out of steam late. He is a game horse, tries his best and is suited to the Champions Cup. He is doing very well after his Gold Challenge win, so we’ll be looking forward to the Cup.”

Two horses are available at 25/2, namely Royal Victory and Flag Man, while defending champion Winchester Mansion can be backed at 14/1.

Dave & Richard: A tale of two Kings at Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge day https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/dave-richard-a-tale-of-two-kings-at-hollywoodbets-gold-challenge-day/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 14:54:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2117397 Dave The King’s stunning victory at the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge at Greyville on Saturday was achieved with an effortless grace akin to Ernie Els’ swing or VVS Laxman’s cover drive. Although likely to have made the final cut anyway, Saturday’s win ensures this four-year-old frontrunner is now guaranteed another crack at the Hollywoodbets Durban July in a month’s time.

The other big story on Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge day saw Richard Fourie achieve what many thought to be impossible – breaking the record Anthony Delpech set back in the 1998/99 for the number of winners in a season. The 38-year-old Fourie claimed the record on the back of Justin Snaith-trained Double Grand Slam in the Grade 2 East Coast Radio Tibouchina Stakes, notching up his 335th win of what has been a stunning campaign. That was one of three wins on the day, with Fourie also piloting Whistle The Tune and Great Plains to victory.

The 38-year-old’s record-breaking season also earned him a cool R1 million as part of Hollywoodbets’ 334 Delpech Jockey Challenge. The challenge, announced back at the start of the season, dangled a R1 million carrot daring the current crop of South African jockeys to challenge Delpech’s record.

Ride the Wave all the way to Hollywoodbets Greyville

A swell of excitement has been forming since the theme – Ride the Wave – was announced back in mid-March. That swell will crest with the wave set to crash over Durban on Saturday 6 July when the best thoroughbreds take to the turf at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Tickets are available now through TicketPro with general access costing just R230. Additionally, there are a host of different marquee experiences available on the day from BOOMTOWN and the Pegasus Lounge to the Opulent Experience Marquee. Find booking information and more for these once-in-a-lifetime experiences by clicking here

Over R2 million in prizes up for grabs

To celebrate Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, Hollywoodbets will be giving away a share of R2 million in cash and prizes. This includes a brand-new VW Golf 8 GTI, an Omoda C5, R360 000 worth of betting vouchers and R300 000 cash.

To enter, take a horseracing bet to the value of R50 or more with Hollywoodbets and opt once in on their promotions page. Entries are unlimited with the competition closing at 23:59 on 31 July 2024.

You could also claim a share of R250 000 or win one of five Hollywoodbets Durban July experiences by purchasing a Holly Top Up Voucher to the value of R50+ and opting in once on the promotions page. Experience winners will have their accommodation, airfare, airport transfer covered and will receive HDJ and BOOMTOWN tickets.

A world of entertainment at your fingertips

Hollywoodbets offers so much more than sports and horseracing. They offer a comprehensive selection of Spina Zonke slots, casino games and a full suite of crash games. Among these is Aviator, the game that has taken South Africa by storm over the last few years, and it’s easy to see why with bets starting from as little as R1 and a maximum payout of R10 million per round.

*DAVE THE KING has subsequently been scratched.

Supplementary entries, Double Superlative, winner of the 2024 WSB Cape Town Met (Grade 1), and Flag Man, a close second behind Green With Envy in the Daily News 2000 (Grade 1), occupy positions 4 & 6 respectively.

Double Superlative has accepted to run in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1 600m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, his first appearance since his “Met” victory, and his performance will provide a valuable clue as to his current well-being.

Dual Grade 1-winning three-year-old Green With Envy is the 28/10 ante-post favourite with the sponsors, while See It Again (9/2) and recent Hollywoodbets Dolphins Cup Trial winner, Oriental Charm (7/1) , are the only other two runners quoted in single figures.

Defending champion Winchester Mansion is currently on offer 12/1 along with Royal Victory and Flag Man, while record breaking Richard Fourie’s ride, Future Swing, is at 10/1.

The 2024 edition of the Grade 1 R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July will take place at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 6 July.

Richard Fourie’s Hollywoodbets Durban July ride CONFIRMED https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/hollywoodbets-durban-july/richard-fourie-hollywoodbets-durban-july-ride-confirmed-justin-snaith-future-swing-breaking/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 10:24:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2115537 South Africa’s record-breaker and national champion jockey elect, Richard Fourie, will partner WSB Grade 2 1900 winner Future Swing for trainer Justin Snaith in next month’s Grade 1 R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Stay glued to The South African website for all the jockey appointments in Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event.

Fourie is a three-time Durban July winner, having triumphed aboard Legislate in 2015, in 2019 on Do It Again and in 2020 on Belgarion.

All three were trained by SA champion Snaith, and the 38-year-old jockey is sticking to a tried and trusted recipe as he bids for a fourth victory in the race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 6 July.

New South Africa record

As reported by The South African website, Fourie rode his record 335th winner of the season over the weekend, breaking Anthony Delpech’s 25-year-old record.

Richard Fourie

“Richard has partnered Future Swing particularly well and he is the perfect rider for this son of Futura – our horse likes to be up on the pace, with a good turn-of-foot as he is a relentless galloper. He’s as honest as they come and with a weight of 54kg, he has to be a serious contender,” Justin Snaith told the Sporting Post on Monday.

Bred by Drakenstein, Future Swing is a son of former SA Horse Of The Year Futura (Dynasty) out of the twice winning Carousel Swing, a daughter of retired champion Trippi (End Sweep).

Raced in partnership by Drakenstein, Kalinga and Pamela Isdell, Future Swing is a R600 000 National Yearling Sale graduate and a winner of 7 races with 8 places from 17 starts for stakes of R1 119 850.

As reported by The South African website, Future Swing is currently quoted at 25/2 in the Hollywoodbets Durban July ante-post betting market.

Updated odds

Meanwhile, race sponsors Hollywoodbets have updated their odds on next month’s edition of the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

The Grade 1 race which carries a prize fund of R5 million will be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 6 July.

Dean Kannemeyer’s three-year-old colt Green With Envy is the current favourite at 5/2.

Michael Roberts’ star See It Again, who disappointed with a below-par run in the WSB Cape Town Met at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in late January when finishing fourth in a field of 11, is next best at 5/1.

Oriental Charm from the Brett Crawford yard follows at 6/1.

A quartet of horses are all available at 25/2, namely Royal VictoryFuture Swing, Lucky Lad and defending champion Winchester Mansion.

After this weekend’s Hollywoodbets Grade 1 Gold Challenge, the Grade 3 Cup Trial, and the Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes (Turffontein on Sunday), there are still 33 hopefuls still in the running for a place in race.

WATCH: Richard Fourie rewrites SA horseracing history books at Hollywoodbets Greyville https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/watch-richard-fourie-rewrites-sa-horseracing-history-books-at-hollywoodbets-greyville-breaking-result-video/ Sat, 08 Jun 2024 14:30:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2114199 In recent months there had been such an air of inevitability about the outcome that Hollywoodbets were offering odds on when Richard Fourie would break the national jockey’s championship record, not if.

The magical number, which had stood for 25 years when Anthony Delpech rode 334 winners, was officially broken on Saturday, 8 June by Fourie when he rode Double Grand Slam to victory in the Grade 2 Tibouchina Stakes over 1 400m at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

It was the third winner of the day for him, after previous success on Whistle The Tune and Great Plains.

Double Grand Slam is co-owned by South African golfing great Gary Player, bred by Varsfontein Stud and trained by Justin Snaith.

The South African season finishes on 31 July and the 38-year-old Fourie is likely to extend the new record to a total that could stand for even longer than the quarter of a century that applied to Delpech.

After reaching the milestone, Richard Fourie said: “This is the moment we’ve been waiting for and to reach it with a win for Mr (Gary) Player and the lovely owners on Double Grand Slam is ironic, given the name.

“The race worked out fantastically and everything was perfect. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, but a special thank you to everyone who has been involved. Thank you to my Mom, who was definitely watching and she’ll be crying. Thank you to Hollywoodbets Greyville and to all those doing the marketing and promoting, There are too many people to thank right now, but also a massive thanks to my sponsors Winning Form.”

Richard Fourie earned R1 million bonus

The jockey himself has earned a R1 million bonus from Hollywoodbets, who put up the financial incentive at the beginning of the 2023/24 season to inject interest into the jockey’s championship.

Many considered the target of 335 as improbable and the fact that Fourie only had 32 winners after the first two months of the season further suggested the record would be untouched for another year, at least.

However, the Cape rider responded to the challenge and put himself through an exhausting programme to rack up the winners around the country and surpass Delpech’s record with a full seven weeks of the season remaining.

Richard Fourie has ridden the most winners of his season at Fairview (105), while he has booted home 59 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth and 23 at Hollywoodbets Durbanville.

The highest number of winners from any one trainer has been the 96 with Alan Greeff in Gqeberha.

The next most successful partnership he has had is with Gauteng trainer Sean Tarry (22).

The jockey’s seasonal tally includes five Grade 1 winners – Thunderstruck, Princess Calla, Silver Sanctuary, Proceed and Lucky Lad. Four have been trained by Tarry and one by Mike de Kock.

Favourite for South African Sportsman of the Year?

Cape Racing’s Executive: Racing & Bloodstock, Justin Vermaak, said: “We wholeheartedly congratulate Richard for his historic achievement. There were many who doubted the possibility but he, and Hollywoodbets with their generous incentive, injected unprecedented interest into the jockeys’ championship.

“This is also the first time that Richard has won the South African title and to do so by breaking the mark set by Anthony Delpech in 1998/99 will go down as one of the great feats in South African racing history.”

Fourie’s most prolific months were in March and May when he had 44 winners in each.

However, his March total was trimmed down by one, to 43, when Mighty Mac was later disqualified, which meant that May will go into the books as to most official winners.

His daily travel routine for much of the year is laid bare when one drills down into the number of winners he has achieved at different courses in the country.

Fairview has those 105, as mentioned, while Hollywoodbets Kenilworth (59) is individually the course where he has had the most success.

Fairview’s tally is split between winners on the Poly surface (58) and Turf (47).

Richard Fourie has also ridden winners at Hollywoodbets Greyville (78) – 40 on the Poly and 38 on the Turf at that venue – Hollywoodbets Scottsville (34), and Gauteng courses Turffontein (34) and the Vaal (2).

In terms of the horse that he has had the most success on, it has been the star two-year-old filly Splicethemainbrace.

She has run five times at Fairview, and is unbeaten with trainer Alan Greeff.

There are four other horses he has won four times on during the season – all for Greeff at Fairview as well.

They are Fairy Knight, Global Ally, Luna Halo and United Express.

On three occasions Fourie has ridden five winners in a race meeting.

Those red letter days came at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 1 October, at Hollywoodbets Scottsville (29 November) and at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 2 June.

There will be many people arguing, justifiably so, that Fourie should be considered for South African Sportsman of the Year at the annual SA Sports Awards.

This is based on the fact that his season spanned 12 months and the record was considered one of the most untouchable in South African sport.

According to the Sporting Post website, all of the major players are still in the hunt, although this weekend’s Hollywoodbets Grade 1 Gold Challenge, the Grade 3 Cup Trial, and the Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes (Turffontein on Sunday) could see some changes in plans.

According to the Sportingpost website, most high profile of the 12 scratchings from the initial list of first entries was Mike de Kock’s undefeated 3-year-old Gimme A Nother.

After her seventh straight victory when winning the Grade 1 Empress Club Stakes in early April, there were signs that her temperament was becoming an issue.

Other scratchings were Montien, Mondial, Let’s Go Now, Atticus Finch, Second Base, Navajo Nation, River Romeo, Get Impressed, Celtic Beauty, Ancient World and Danse Milord.

High drama at Hollywoodbets Greyville as SA Champions Season opening day CALLED OFF https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/high-drama-at-hollywoodbets-greyville-as-sa-champions-season-opening-day-called-off/ Sat, 04 May 2024 15:09:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2086019 High drama unfolded at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 4 May on the opening day of the SA Champions Season when the heavily fancied highveld raider Main Defender was scratched due to excessive TC02 levels on the eve of the running of the IOS Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes.

According to the SportingPost website, in scenes reminiscent of a public protest on the levels of that not seen on a racecourse in recent years, outraged connections of the top-class 3-year-old and members of the punting public blocked the exit to the parade ring in advance of the SA Champions Season opener.

Gold Circle eventually abandoned the meeting.

Trainers Mike de Kock, Tony Rivalland and Garth Puller attempted to reason with the protester, but despite their best efforts there was no relenting.

Feature races will be held on Wednesday, 8 May

Meanwhile, following the abandonment of race meeting after the running of the fifth race, Gold Circle announced that the R500 000 Independent on Saturday Drill Hall Stakes, the R500 000 World Sports Betting Guineas as well as the R500 000 WSB Fillies Guineas will be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, 8 May.

This decision was reached following consultation with the trainers involved and was supported by sponsors.

The original programme for Wednesday’s race meeting has been recalled and a new race card will be issued in due course.

“We believe this decision to be in the best interests of all concerned and Gold Circle regrets the events on Saturday which led to the race meeting being called off,” concluded Racing Executive Raf Sheik.

L’Ormarins King’s Plate: Missed the race? – WATCH https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/horse-racing/lormarins-kings-plate-missed-the-race-watch-video-result-hollywoodbets-kenilworth/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 11:36:06 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1941469 Around 5 000 racegoers flocked to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in Cape Town on Saturday, 6 January for the 163rd L’Ormarins King’s Plate.

Known for its strict white and blue dress code, the Grade 1 event dates back to 1861 and holds a special place in equestrian history as South Africa’s oldest continuous horse race.

As expected, the day delivered high fashion, thrilling racing, plenty of entertainment and some incredible prizes, with the best-dressed lady receiving an all-expenses paid trip for two to London to attend the Qatar Glorious Goodwood Racing Festival in July this year.

The event was originally established to pay homage to Queen Victoria and continues to be held in honour of the British monarch.

In the day’s main race, it was Gaynor Rupert’s Charles Dickens that staged an electrifying late burst from midfield to take the R2 million Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate victory, giving trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and jockey Aldo Domeyer their first win in the race.

In celebration, Rupert called it the highlight of her racing career, “To quote Charles Dickens himself, it has been the best of times and the worst of times. It is also the first time Drakenstein has won the L’Ormarins Kings Plate race in the 20 years we have been sponsoring the event”

Bass-Robinson’s success didn’t end there, as Beach Bomb took the Cartier Paddock Stakes Grade 1 event earlier in the day.

Their respective wins have also earned Beach Bomb and Charles Dickens automatic starting positions in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.

Renowned luxury brand Cartier returned as sponsor of not only the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes, but also Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Man and Best Hat – won by Patricia Dolz, Daniel Chiwara, and Tosca Giffin, respectively.

While the racing wrapped up just after 17:30, the party continued well into the night, with thousands of Capetonians making the most of the balmy summer night.

Cape Racing CEO Greg Bortz says, “We’re seeing the crowds come back. We’re seeing people buy horses again. The more horses people buy, the more horses in a race, the more crowds come to watch, the more owners there are – it’s a very symbiotic relationship. And we are seeing an absolute take-off of racing in the Cape”

“We have more lofty goals; the ambition now is to turn Hollywoodbets Kenilworth into one of the top five racecourses in the world.”
