However he wouldn’t rule out a return down the line.

No retirement U-turn from Quinton de Kock

Quinton De Kock admitted that he had been approached about a u-turn as he continues to be in brilliant form at the Cricket World Cup.

However, he says that he will be going through with stepping away from the game.

“I’m set on my decision. It’s the end of my 50-over career. There have been one or two words said to me about it but I don’t think it’s going to happen,” he said as per ESPN Cricinfo.

As for a return in green and gold, De Kock would never say never.

“At this point, I don’t foresee it happening. But, you never know. Strange things happen in life. It could be a possibility but I don’t think so,” he said. “There’s some good youngsters coming through anyway who will probably take my space as soon as I leave here and they will have to deal with national duties and that’s that. I don’t think I will be coming through, but you never know.”

Doing his bit

De Kock had a troubled time as part of the Proteas leadership but in his last World Cup he has gone out of his way to help out the less experienced players.

“I am just trying to help out everyone where I can,” Quinton de Kock said. “Guys are going through experiences for the first time which I have been through before so I am just trying to help the guys.”

For De Kock, getting the Proteas over the line at the Cricket World Cup at long last is the note he wants to leave the team on and he says that personal milestones and records are not his focus.

“I’d rather win the World Cup and score no runs, than score all the runs and not win the World Cup,” he added.

A star is born: SA U19 fast bowler catches the eye https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/cricket/cricket-world-cup-2023/star-born-sa-u19-fast-bowler-kwena-maphaka-catches-the-eye/ Sat, 20 Jan 2024 06:16:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1959063 The opening day of the 15th edition of ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup saw South Africa down West Indies in a close contest, with Kwena Maphaka’s 5/38 proving to be vital for the hosts.

The young fast bowler certainly looks to have plenty of raw potential, and was quickly trending across social media as cricket lovers spotted the potential of a future star.

The left armer received rave reviews for his array of skills and stunning yorkers that inspired the young South Africans to an important victory.

After winning the toss, West Indies captain Stephan Pascal elected to bowl first. He backed his strong bowling line-up to do well against South Africa. Lhuan-Dre Pretorius took charge in the initial stages with a flurry of boundaries, though Deshawn James managed to grab an early wicket in the form of Steve Stolk (5), who mistimed a swipe towards the off-side where the alert Pascal took an easy catch.

On the other hand, Pretorius kept going for his shots and even hit the first six of the tournament against Nathan Sealy. However, it was Sealy who had the last laugh as he cleaned up the left-hander with a beauty in his next over. David Teeger and Richard Seletswane held the fort over the next few overs and looked to rebuild the innings.

Just as the duo were looking to pick the pace, Seletswane was run out off a direct hit from Tarrique Edward.

Oliver Whitehead came in at number five, and after surviving a close call, helped South Africa rebuild their innings. Along with Teeger, he added 48 runs for the fourth wicket. However, he was caught at mid-on after he tried to charge James down the wicket. Sealy returned to strike twice in his ninth over, removing Romashan Pillay and the set Teeger to put West Indies ahead.

Dewan Marais then let out several attacking strokes to announce his intent. This helped the skipper Juan James to settle in and go for his shots later in the innings. With a positive approach, the duo added crucial runs towards the end of the innings. Marais’ impressive fifty came off merely 33 balls. He finished as the innings top-scorer with his 65 from 38.

In response, the Boys in Maroon found the going tough against the young Proteas. Left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka ran through the top-order, picking Adrian Weir, Pascal and Joshua Dorne in the first 12 balls of his spell. An aggressive Jordan Johson tried to counter-attack but eventually fell to Riley Norton. At the end of 10 overs, West Indies were going at a healthy pace of 7.3, but had lost half their side.

Jewel Andrew and Nathan Sealy made their intentions clear by going for their shots, ensuring that West Indies moved ahead at a brisk pace. In the next 15 overs, the duo added nearly 100 runs to keep their side in the game. Just when it looked like the two had done enough to take the game away from South Africa, Sealy was run out from the deep by a direct hit at the score of 190 to add intrigue to the contest.

Andrew kept going with assistance from Tarrique and Nathan Edward. However, Maphaka and Norton struck in the later overs to run through the West Indies lower-order. Andrew’s dismissal at 130 all but sealed the game for the Proteas.

Bavuma should fight back and show what he’s made of, says Smith https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/cricket/cricket-world-cup-2023/bavuma-should-fight-back-and-show-what-hes-made-of-says-smith-23-november-2023/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 15:12:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1891996 Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith has backed Temba Bavuma to return to form following a poor World Cup showing.

The 33-year-old Proteas ODI captain sturggled with the bat in India, where he only scored 145 runs in eight matches at an average of 18.12.

After South Africa’s semi-final exit against Australia last week, Bavuma was criicised not only for his poor batting but some of the decisions he made on field.

Smith says Bavuma should deal with criticism

Smith, who captain the Proteas for nearly a decade, said it was normal for Bavuma to get ‘heat’ from fans.

“You’ve got to go to every press conference, you’ve got to front up for your team, and the scrutiny is on you as a leader. And if you don’t perform, it’s natural that that position will come under heat and that’s something, as a leader, that you’ve just got to deal with,” he was quoted on sacricketmag.com.

“Often, as a captain, it’s not your job to sit there and blame other players and make excuses.

Bavuma is set to remain captain of the ODI side despite poor showing at this year’s World Cup.

ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 team (in batting order):

1. Quinton de Kock (wkt) (South Africa) – 594 runs at 59.40

2. Rohit Sharma (captain) (India) – 597 runs at 54.27

3. Virat Kohli (India) – 765 runs at 95.62

4. Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand) – 552 runs at 69

5. KL Rahul (India) – 452 runs at 75.33

6. Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 400 runs at 66.66 and six wickets at 55

7. Ravindra Jadeja (India) – 120 runs at 40 and 16 wickets at 24.87

8. Jasprit Bumrah (India) – 20 wickets at 18.65

9. Dilshan Madushanka (Sri Lanka) – 21 wickets at 25

10. Adam Zampa (Australia) – 23 wickets at 22.39

11. Mohammed Shami (India) – 24 wickets at 10.70

12th player: Gerald Coetzee (South Africa) – 20 wickets at 19.80

Named in the Team of the Tournament for the second 50-over World Cup running, Sharma set the tone at the top of the order for India.

The veteran opener put a disappointing opening performance against Australia behind him with a blistering 131 from just 84 balls to win the Player of the Match award against Afghanistan.

He backed that by top-scoring with 86 in a vital win over fierce rivals Pakistan, and passed 40 on all but one occasion thereafter, including in the final against Australia.

The retiring Quinton de Kock partners him at the top of the order after signing off in style, making history in his final days as an ODI player.

The South African became the first wicket-keeper in World Cup history to surpass the 500-run mark and claim 20 dismissals in a single tournament.

His haul with the gloves was just one short of Adam Gilchrist’s record of 21 from the 2003 tournament, while he also finished just one short of Sharma’s record five centuries in a single tournament, as De Kock smashed four for the Proteas on their way to the semi-finals.

Completing the top order is Kohli, who topped the run scoring charts just as he did in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 12 months ago.

Kohli hit a staggering 765 runs at an average of 95.62, shattering the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 673 runs during the 2003 edition.

Kohli’s best performance came in the semi-final win over New Zealand as his 117 and third tournament century steered India to a first final in 12 years.

Batting at No.4 is Mitchell, who hit two hundreds against India in his first maiden 50-over World Cup.

The prolific Kiwi blasted a swashbuckling 130 in the round robin against the Men in Blue and scintillating 134 in the semi-final to take his final tally to 552 runs.

India’s Rahul is at No.5 after chipping with several key knocks throughout the tournament as well as a hundred in a routine win over the Netherlands.

Rahul top scored for India in the final with 66 but it proved in vain as the hosts were denied by an inspired Australia side.

At No.6 is all-rounder Maxwell, who hit the winning runs in the final as Australia lifted their sixth crown.

Maxwell crashed 106 from 44 balls for the fastest century in World Cups against the Netherlands in the round robin, with the 309-run winning margin becoming the biggest in tournament history.

He was equally dominant against Afghanistan, ploughing a lone furrow as his 201 not out ensured Australia’s place in the semi-finals.

India’s Jadeja takes the second all-rounder spot after impressing with the ball, most notably against South Africa when he became only the second Indian spinner after Yuvraj Singh to take a five-wicket-haul in ODI World Cups.

Jadeja made further history with two wickets against the Netherlands three days later, as he overtook Singh and Anil Kumble for the most wickets in a single World Cup by an Indian spinner.

Bumrah, like team-mate and opener Sharma, is included for the second World Cup running after taking 20 wickets, two more than his tally in 2019.

Ever a threat with the new ball, Bumrah picked up the early wickets of Australia’s Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith as India threatened to stage a dramatic fightback in the final.

At No 9 is budding Sri Lankan superstar Madushanka, who announced himself onto the world stage with figures of five for 80 against India.

By that stage, the left-arm quick had already impressed with four wickets against the Netherlands, three against Australia and two each against Pakistan and South Africa, finishing third for wickets taken.

Zampa is at No.10 after taking 23 wickets and bamboozling the world’s best batters throughout the tournament.

He claimed four wickets in three successive matches against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Netherlands, and only against South Africa in the semi-final did he draw a blank.

And after claiming the wicket of Bumrah in the final, spinner Zampa equalled Muttiah Muralitharan’s record of 23 wickets in a single World Cup.

Completing the line-up is Shami, who recorded the best figures of any bowler in a World Cup knockout game after his seven-for in the semi-final success over New Zealand.

That performance helped Shami to the top of the wicket charts following mesmerising displays against New Zealand (5/54) and Sri Lanka (5/18).

And the 12th man is Gerald Coetzee, who was among the wickets in every match he played on his ICC tournament debut.

Coetzee emerged as a key force in the Proteas side following injuries to Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala with 20 wickets in eight matches as he became the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in a single edition of the World Cup.

– If Australia win yet another World Cup trophy – having previously tasted success in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015 – they will have won six World Cup titles, which is easily the most of any country.

– Pat Cummins has a total of 32 wickets in World Cups and four more scalps against India will see the Australia captain surpass fellow quick Brett Lee (35) and become the third-highest wicket-taker for Australia in the history of the tournament.

– Adam Zampa is Australia’s leading wicket-taker at this year’s tournament with 22 scalps and a five-wicket haul against India will see the spinner equal Mitchell Starc (27 in 2019) for the most wickets by any bowler in a single edition of the Men’s Cricket World Cup.

– David Warner has scored six centuries in the history of the Men’s Cricket World Cup and could draw level with India captain Rohit Sharma (seven) for most centuries ever at the event by reaching three figures in the final.

– Warner could also become just the sixth Men’s player from Australia to achieve the milestone of 7000 ODI runs if he can score 75 or more in the final.

– If Glenn Maxwell can score 101 in the final he will become just the seventh Australian player to have scored more than 1000 runs in the history of the Men’s Cricket World Cup.

QUESTION | How much is the prize money for the 2023 Cricket World Cup?

ALL TOO FAMILIAR TALE OF WOE

With the South African cricket side having again fell short during the business end of a big tournament, the question has been asked: did they choke – again – when it mattered most?

“I guess you need to define what a choke is,” coach Rob Walter commented. “For me, a choke is losing a game that you’re in a position to win,.

“In this instance, we were behind the eight ball right from the word go, and we actually fought our way back into contention and put up a score that gave us a chance.

“The Australians, in turn, got off to a flyer and we fought and we put ourselves back into the game. Of course, we were 30 runs or 40 runs short, but still having them seven down and taking into account a couple of close calls like catches bouncing just short, a little inside edge that could have been taken, you know, that suggests to me there were no signs remotely close to a choke.

“It’s a serious contest between two good teams, number-two and number-three in the tournament.”

Coach offers his answer! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/cricket/proteas/proteas-did-they-choke-again-world-cup-coach-offers-his-answer-breaking-17-november-2023/ Fri, 17 Nov 2023 07:49:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1882292 The Proteas came into Thursday’s World Cup semi-final as marginal favourites against an Australian team that they had defeated comfortably in the pool stages.

Yet, in a fashion that has become far too familiar, the Proteas got off to the worst possible start in a knockout game – with the team having chosen to bat first before being reduced to 24-4.

QUESTION | How much is the prize money for the 2023 Cricket World Cup?

All too familiar tale of woe for Proteas

From there, the Proteas could never fully recover, and ultimately suffered another heartbreaking defeat.

So, did they choke – again – when it mattered most?

The Proteas went down to Australia by three wickets in Thursday’s semi-final after a gallant effort to defend a modest 212 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

It was a fifth semi-final loss for South Africa to add to similar disappointments in 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2015.

Five-time champions Australia marched into their eighth final where they will tackle undefeated hosts India on Sunday.

Bavuma

Bavuma played the match despite not being 100% fit due to a hamstring injury and was out for a fourth-ball duck.

Bavuma, an opening batsman who missed two games in the World Cup through illness, managed just 145 runs in eight matches with a highest score of 35.

“I just told him how proud I am of him,” Walter said of Bavuma.

“You know he marshalled the troops this evening unbelievably well.

“He was the lead man that got us into this tournament in the first place, I think people forget that so I just wanted to make sure that he was aware of how important he is in this team and how proud I am of his efforts and the way he led throughout the tournament.”

Bavuma has played 38 ODIs for South Africa, scoring 1,512 runs at an average of over 45.

Walter defended the decision to play Bavuma despite not being fully recovered from the injury he picked against Afghanistan last Friday.

“If you looked at him in the field, if you didn’t know that he wasn’t 100%, you wouldn’t have guessed,” said Walter.

“So, in terms of being 100%, I think he was pretty close, to be fair. He went through the entire week, he got better every day. And the only potential red flag might have been if something happened in the field.”

‘Father figure’

South Africa fell to 24-4 in 11.5 overs after they elected to bat first but David Miller’s valiant 101 handed Australia a 213-run target on a tough pitch.

“The first 12 overs of batting this afternoon was a serious challenge. And ultimately, I think that’s what separated the game really,” said Walter.

Quinton de Kock, with 594 runs including four centuries, remained the team’s top batsman in the tournament and second only to India’s Virat Kohli (711).

However, on Thursday, the 30-year-old De Kock was out for just three on his last ODI for South Africa.

“Thank goodness I don’t have to be Quinny’s father figure anymore. That’s a bonus,” Walter joked.

Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee was a breakout star for South Africa with 20 wickets in the competition including two on Thursday.

A week ago, South Africa looked set to challenge India for a top spot in the round-robin stage but a heavy defeat against India brought doubt to many regarding Proteas’ World Cup credentials.

A comprehensive win against Afghanistan saw Bavuma’s men finish second ahead of Australia due to a healthy run rate.

This was the fifth time that South Africa failed to reach the final of the 50-over World Cup.

Proteas posted a low total of 212 and on a wicket that suited batting conditions, Temba Bavuma stood little chance against an in-form Australian side looking to play their sixth World Cup final.

LIVE SCORING: Proteas v Australia CWC semi-final

INNINGS RECAP: South Africa’s battling line-up woes explained

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma and his opening partner skipped out onto the field to bat.

But it wasn’t long before their partnership was broken, with Bavuma — who admitted before the game that he is not fully fit — falling for a four-ball duck.

And when Quinton de Kock tried to take on Hazlewood in the sixth over, he ended up ballooning a catch towards the mid-on region. Pat Cummins held on to a brilliant take.

The Proteas were also challenged by some great fielding from Australia, especially veteran David Warner, who wasn’t shy of throwing himself around the field. A big task lay ahead for Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram.

However, Starc and Cummins proved to be too good in those conditions. Markram was dismissed while trying to pierce through the point, while Van der Dussen fell in the very next over when he edged one to the second slip. South Africa were four down before rain arrived to halt play.

ALSO READ | Cricket World Cup: Proteas set low target for Australia to chase

After resumption, attacking play from Miller lifted the Proteas’ effort. A number of fours and sixes flew from his willow, even as the South Africa rate picked up. He got good support from Heinrich Klaasen, who hit a couple of lusty blows against Adam Zampa to get going. Proteas seemed to be building up towards a fighting total before Travis Head turned the game around with his part-time spin.

The tweaker cleaned up Klaasen (47) after the batter missed one that came in completely. Off the very next ball, he had Marco Jansen trapped lbw for a duck.

South Africa’s chances of reaching a competitive score rested on Miller’s chances, and he delivered with a defiant century.

The number six and Gerald Coetzee put on 53 runs before Coetzee departed caught behind for 19, although replays suggested that he would have survived had he reviewed the decision.

But Miller continued in style, bringing up his hundred with a six off the Australian skipper, only for the centurion to fall two balls later and miss out on the chance of a late flurry with two-and-a-half overs of the innings remaining.

That left Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi at the crease to try and accumulate as many runs as possible off the last couple of overs. Still, their contributions of 10 and one, respectively, only lifted the Proteas to a paltry 212 runs all out.

“Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats,” Azam announced on X, formerly Twitter, after meeting Pakistan Cricket Board chief Zakar Ashraf in Lahore.

“It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats.”

Azam, 29, had been leading the side since November 2019 but after the failure to reach the World Cup semi-finals in India his position was immediately under threat.

“I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication,” added Azam.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility.”

Shan Masood is tipped to lead the Test side while Shaheen Shah Afridi is the likely candidate for the white ball captaincy, but no official announcement has been made.

Azam said his journey had been a rollercoaster ride which culminated in a record of four wins and five losses at the World Cup.

As well as suffering an eighth defeat in eight meetings at World Cups against arch-rivals India, he also oversaw a first loss to neighbours Afghanistan.

“I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from the PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field,” said Azam.

“But I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world.”

Ranked as the number one batsman before the World Cup, Azam failed to score big runs in India, finishing with 320 without a century over nine games.

Azam led Pakistan in 20 Tests, winning 10, losing six and drawing the other four. In 43 ODIs, Pakistan won 26, losing 16 with one no result.

In the shortest format, Azam led Pakistan to the semi-final of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021 and a runners-up finish a year later.

In 71 T20Is, he enjoyed 41 wins, 23 losses with seven no results.

Below, a look at six highs and lows of his career.

Virat Kohli arrives

Kohli made his ODI debut in 2008 but took a year to stamp his class with a century against Sri Lanka at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

A 21-year-old Kohli was already marked as a special player and came into bat at number four after Virender Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir.

He hit 107 and was involved in a 224-run third-wicket stand with Gambhir, who hit an unbeaten 150, as India chased down a target of 316 with 11 balls and seven wickets to spare.

The knock established Kohli as a dependable batsman and the birth of his reputation as a “chase master”.

World Cup win

Alongside the likes of Tendulkar and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he was part of the team which won the 2011 World Cup, ending a 28-year wait for India.

Virat Kohli played his part with 282 runs, including an unbeaten 100 against Bangladesh.

In the final, Kohli contributed with a vital 35 as India chased down their victory target of 275 with 10 balls to spare as Dhoni hit the winning six.

He later carried Tendulkar on his shoulders during the victory lap and teammate Irfan Pathan said “he now stands shoulder to shoulder with the Master Blaster”.

QUESTION | How much is the prize money for the 2023 Cricket World Cup?

Captaincy and fame

After being understudy to Dhoni, Kohli took over the Test captaincy after the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman’s shock retirement in December 2014 and became all-format leader in 2017.

He also became a global brand, breaking into the Forbes list of highest paid athletes as the only cricketer with total earnings of $26 million.

His fan base rose to millions on social media and scenes of people invading the pitch to touch his feet or take selfies became regular occurences at Indian venues.

Madame Tussauds in London even unveiled a waxwork of Kohli at Lord’s in 2019.

ALSO READ | Morne Morkel quits as Pakistan bowling coach after Cricket World Cup flop

Controversies galore

Kohli has been the poster boy of Indian cricket for the past decade but he has also been involved in controversies.

He has never shied away from on-field verbal duels and had an infamous run-in with Steve Smith during a Test in Benguluru when the Australian captain was seen looking up to the dressing room over a reviewing decision.

Kohli had reservations over the coaching style of former India Test captain Anil Kumble who quit as national team coach due his “untenable” relationship with the star player.

He has also courted controversy during the IPL – this year he was involved in heated exchanges with Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq and Lucknow coach Gautam Gambhir.

MUST READ | Dale Steyn: Angelo Mathews’ ‘timed out’ dismissal ‘not cool’

Captaincy exit

Kohli’s inability to win a world title rankled his critics who slammed his leadership skills in the limited-overs format.

An extended lean patch saw him fail to reach three figures in over 1,000 days and that raised more concerns.

He quit as T20 skipper in late 2021 and was soon sacked from the ODI captaincy. Later, he claimed he learnt 90 minutes before a team selection announcement about his removal from the 50-over job.

India’s cricket board and chief Sourav Ganguly refuted the claims and the relationship between the two men soured. Kohli left the Test captaincy in 2022.

ALSO READ | Who’s who on Cricket World Cup rich list

Battling depression

The dry run with the bat and the captaincy saga took a toll on Kohli who later revealed he struggled with his mental health.

Virat Kohli later spoke about “faking intensity” during his batting slump and how he had been “snappy” around his Bollywood actress wife Anushka Sharma.

“For the first time in 10 years, I didn’t touch my bat for a month,” Kohli told Star Sports after he took a break from cricket.

Kohli hit back with his first international century after 1 020 days during the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and later spoke about being in a “happy space”.

Bavuma not fit

Bavuma, an opening batsman, struggled with his hamstring in the win over Afghanistan and remains in doubt for Thursday’s game in Kolkata.

“So this day becomes important in terms of a decision about tomorrow. I’m quite confident, but it’s not a unilateral decision that will be made.”

The Proteas won seven of their nine league matches to finish second in the 10-team table to book a final-four clash in Kolkata on Thursday.

That run included a 134-rout of the Australians at Lucknow four weeks ago.

Five-time champions Australia are coming off seven straight wins at the tournament.

Bavuma

“A lot of people believe that this could be the year that we see ourselves in the final,” Bavuma, who remains doubtful to play the semi-final due his hamstring injury, told reporters.

“We’d like nothing better than that. But we also respect the game of cricket. We’re not coming up against a Mickey Mouse team. Australia have a lot of experience and confidence in knockout games like this, so we’ve got to respect that.”

The most shocking World Cup exit for South Africa was their 1999 semi-final loss to Australia after the match in Birmingham ended in a tie and their rivals went through due to a better group finish.

Australia also easily came out on top in a 2007 semi-final clash between the teams in the Caribbean.

Bavuma said the mindset of his team remains confident ahead of the knockout contest.

“From a skill point of view, from a physical point of view, the guys are quite confident,” said Bavuma.

“There’s a sense of calmness within the team and obviously the normal level of anxiety that you would expect of going into the game tomorrow.”

He added: “But I think we’ll take a lot of confidence with our performances up until this point.”

Springboks inspiration

Bavuma said he will look to play two frontline spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

“Obviously, Keshav and Shamsi. We have Aiden (Markram) as well, who also gives us an option there. Then I think it’s just finalising in terms of the three seamers, who that may be,” he said.

Maharaj, a left-arm orthodox bowler, has claimed 14 wickets in nine matches while left-arm wrist-spinner Shamsi has seven off just three games.

Bavuma also praised wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock for leading the batting charge with his 591 runs, second only to India’s Virat Kohli.

“Quinton’s been magnificent for us,” said Bavuma.

“At one point he was the leading World Cup scorer as well. Knowing Quinton, I don’t think he’s really paying much attention to all of that. I think his focus is on contributing as best as he can for the team.”

De Kock, 30, will quit one-day international cricket when this tournament is over.

Bavuma said South Africa’s cricketers are taking inspiration from the Springboks’ second straight Rugby World Cup title last month in their quest for global glory in India.

ALSO READ: Cricket World Cup: Bavuma spotted training despite injury concerns

“I think to a large degree we look at them in awe, the Springboks and how they’ve gone about their back-to-back wins within the World Cup,” said Bavuma.

“Obviously, the way they won it this year with the knockout games being quite close and again how that resilience, how that do-or-die attitude came through.

“That’s what we’ve been speaking about as a team that when the crunch moment comes, when the pressure moments come, we come together as a team and we find a way to get over the line.”

The competitiveness of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has made it difficult for bowlers to hold on to their top spot.

On 1 November, Shaheen Afridi claimed the top spot in the rankings but his reign lasted all of one week after Mohammed Siraj toppled him on 8 November.

Now less than a week later, a new No 1 emerged with South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj climbing the charts to the summit, with the Proteas spinner rising from No.2 while Siraj moved down a spot from the top.

Since the last update last Wednesday, Maharaj picked up seven wickets in three matches, which included a four-for against New Zealand in Pune.

He was one of the very few bowlers who troubled India, returning figures of 1/30 when the hosts scored 326. In the final group stage game, the left-arm spinner scalped two wickets against Afghanistan.

Siraj, who scalped six wickets in India’s last three matches, isn’t too far behind the Proteas’ Maharaj with only three rating points separating the two. His compatriots Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav occupy two of the three remaining spots in the Top 5.

Summary

India versus New Zealand is a mouth-watering prospect as the first semi-final of the tournament throws up a repeat of the 2019 semi at Old Trafford in Manchester.

New Zealand denied India in a nail-biting classic on that occasion, with Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni’s fightback proving not quite enough to deny the Kiwis a spot in the final.

India’s progression to this semi-final has been even more serene that it was in England four years ago, with Rohit Sharma’s side winning all nine games and rarely even looking like being challenged on their path to the knockout stages.

History beckons for an India side who are looking for a first major tournament win in 12 years, and where better for this semi-final to be held than at the venue where India won their last Cricket World Cup back in 2011.

This generation of New Zealand cricketers are the nearly-side of the white-ball game, with many of the players to have lost the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in 2021 and Cricket World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019 still involved in the set-up.

The India v New Zealand clash will take place on Wednesday, 15 November at 10:30 (SA time), and on the eve of the match, a massive controversy has erupted.

According to a Daily Mail exclusive, it is claimed the Indian board have switched the pitch for the semi-final clash, opting to play on a surface that has been used twice already at the tournament, and which will presumably suit their spinners.

Cricket World Cup controversy

Pitches at ICC events are prepared under the supervision of the governing body’s consultant, Andy Atkinson, and there is supposed to be a pre-agreement over which pitch is used. However, it’s alleged that India have effectively ignored this.

“The pitch for Wednesday’s game at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium was supposed to be No 7, an entirely fresh surface unused for any of the venue’s four group matches,” the report read.

“But a WhatsApp message circulated on Tuesday to a group of more than 50 BCCI and ICC officials confirmed that the first semi-final had been moved to pitch No 6, which has already staged games between England and South Africa, plus India and Sri Lanka.

“Atkinson is understood to have been told there is an unspecified problem with pitch No 7 – an opinion he is thought not to share. It follows concerns that plans for the final at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, where India or New Zealand will meet Australia or South Africa, who play in Kolkata on Thursday, may also be changed unilaterally.”

No special treatment for injured captain Temba Bavuma, Walter https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/cricket/cricket-world-cup-2023/no-special-treatment-for-injured-captain-temba-bavuma-walter-breaking-15-november-2023/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 07:04:11 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1878774 South Africa coach Rob Walter said on Tuesday that injured Temba Bavuma will not receive preferential treatment because he is the team captain.

Bavuma hopes for return

The 33-year-old batsman hopes to be fit for the World Cup semi-final against Australia in Kolkata on Thursday after straining his right hamstring against Afghanistan last Friday.

ALSO READ: Proteas: Temba Bavuma injury sparks furious debate

“No one is bigger than the team at the end of the day. That applies to Temba and everyone else,” said Walter after a practice session in the Indian city.

“Being skipper will not give Bavuma extra protection if the injury does not heal sufficiently and inhibits his play.”

Bavuma took part in a floodlit training session at Eden Gardens on Tuesday and did not show any signs of discomfort.

But Walter warned that there are still hurdles the skipper must clear before he can lead South Africa into a match that will decide who faces India or New Zealand in the final.

ALSO READ: “It’s a challenge for Proteas to bat second” admits Bavuma

“We still need to check him out in the high-speed zones as we progress from when the injury happened to the rehabilitation that has taken place during the past 72 hours,” said the coach.

“Each day brings some new elements to test before deciding whether he is ready and match fit to play in the semi-final. The progression has been positive, which is awesome.”

Modest form

Walter said he is not overly concerned about the modest current form of Bavuma, who has scored 145 runs in seven innings at the global showcase.

“Temba has not scored the runs he would have wanted to at the World Cup. However, when I watch him train and play I sense a big score is just around the corner.

“We are not part of the conversation about Temba being dropped. He is one of our best batters this year.

“That said, he is not undroppable, nor is any other member of the squad. No one is bigger than the team.

“Hopefully, we will be able make a call on Temba before Thursday. In an ideal world, you do not want to wait that long, but I need to give him the best chance to play for his country.”

ALSO READ: “It’s a challenge for Proteas to bat second” admits Bavuma

If Bavuma is ruled out of the showdown with Australia, his place will be taken by Reeza Hendricks, a right-handed batter.

South Africa believe the Kolkata pitch will take spin, and may bring in left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi at the expense of Lungi Ngidi or Gerald Coetzee.

Current form favours South Africa after a 134-run victory over Australia in the pool stage, but all four previous semi-finals appearances by the Proteas have ended in disappointment.

And two of those exits, in 1999 and 2007, were against Australia.

Proteas determined to overcome World Cup semi-final jinx https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/cricket/cricket-world-cup-2023/proteas-determined-to-overcome-world-cup-semi-final-jinx-breaking-15-november-2023/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 06:46:54 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1878724 South Africa insist they will not be burdened by scarring from their chequered record in World Cup knockout matches when they face old rivals Australia on Thursday for a spot in the final.

The Proteas have made four semi-final appearances in the showpiece – in 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2015 — but have fallen to defeat every time, twice losing to Australia.

Australia

In 1999, they lost to Australia after a dramatic tie at Edgbaston which saw their rivals go through due to a better group stage finish.

Eight years later, South Africa went down by seven wickets after being bundled out for just 149 at St Lucia.

Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, however, could be the stage for redemption for South Africa who made the semi-finals by winning seven of their nine league matches.

They have also been racking up impressive totals including the highest score in World Cup history of 428 against Sri Lanka.

The Proteas have won their last four meetings with Australia, including a 134-run thrashing in the league stage in Lucknow four weeks ago.

“There isn’t a lot of mystery about what’s lying ahead,” said fast bowler Gerald Coetzee who has claimed 18 wickets in seven matches.

Five-time champions Australia are coming off seven straight wins at the tournament.

That run included Glenn Maxwell’s one-man rescue mission when his unbeaten 201 led Australia to victory from the brink of defeat at 91-7 against Afghanistan.

ALSO READ: Proteas coach makes it clear: We will continue to back Bavuma!

Rassie van der Dussen, who made 76 in South Africa’s concluding group win over Afghanistan to take his tournament total to 442 runs, also shrugged off past disappointments.

“I was 10 years old (in 1999),” said Van der Dussen. “In that year they had a really good chance to win the World Cup. I think we have a good chance as well.”

Leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi insisted the past “doesn’t matter one bit”.

“We’re a different group of players. Before we got to the World Cup, nobody said that we’d be in the semi-final and here we are,” he told South Africa’s Independent media.

“That’s what propels this team – instead of feeling pressure, we see it as an opportunity to do something special. No South African men’s team has been in the World Cup final and that for us is very exciting because it is an opportunity to do something that no other team has done.”

Bavuma fitness worry

Australia opener Travis Head was four when the drama of Edgbaston was played out in 1999 so prefers to focus on the challenge ahead.

“The boys have been invested for a long time so if we’re going to spend that much time here we might as well try and go the whole way,” said Head.

“I’m sure everyone has thought about that (making the final).

“It hasn’t really been spoken about as a group, but we know what’s at the end of this tournament and what’s up for grabs.”

The fitness of South Africa captain Temba Bavuma remains a concern after he picked up a hamstring injury against Afghanistan.

But Bavuma, who missed two group games through illness, is expected to play after he batted in the nets at Eden Gardens.

ALSO READ: Cricket World Cup: Bavuma spotted training despite injury concerns

South African batting has stood out at the World Cup.

Opener Quinton de Kock’s 591 runs is second only to the 594 of Virat Kohli.

The 30-year-old De Kock, who will quit one-day internationals at the end of the tournament, has four centuries to his name. One of those came against Australia in the group stage.

But chasing remains an issue for the Proteas as their two defeats — against India and the Netherlands — both came batting second.

Australia have mastered chases.

After Maxwell’s epic knock against Afghanistan, Mitchell Marsh smashed an unbeaten 177 as Australia overhauled the 306 of Bangladesh with 32 balls and eight wickets to spare.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa’s 22 wickets has put him on top of the bowling charts.

Opening batsman David Warner is one run short of 500 including two centuries and a highest of 163 in the win over Pakistan.

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc and Maxwell both missed the game with Afghanistan but are expected to return for what will be Australia’s eighth semi-final in 13 editions.

If you are a Proteas fan, this might be good news and here’s why:

If a knock-out match is washed out, a team that finished ahead in the round-robin stage will go through and in this case, South Africa will play in the final should rain have a final say.

Proteas could finally benefit from rain in the World Cup

According to The India Meteorological Department, a cyclone is expected to hit Kolkata ahead of Thursday’s semifinal encounter.

“Under the influence of this system, a low pressure is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal by Tuesday,” the department said on Monday.

Both South Africa and Australia finished the round-robin stage of the tournament on 14 points, but Temba Bavuma’s men finished higher due to a better run rate.

The Aussies are the team on form going into the semis and are favourites to beat the Proteas on Thursday.

Bavuma sustained a right hamstring strain during Friday’s Cricket World Cup match against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad, and while he wasn’t sent for a scan, there have been question marks over whether he might be in doubt for this Thursday’s semi-final.

Cricket South Africa on Saturday said Bavuma has “showed an improvement overnight”, as per ESPN, and the latest reports suggest he is showing improved mobility at the start of the week.

PROTEAS BACKING BAVUMA

Bavuma has struggled to find form in this World Cup, and with an average around 20, many have suggested Reeza Hendricks should be the obvious choice to replace him.

However, Walter has said this is not being considered right now.

“Temba hasn’t come up in the conversation of being dropped because of form, because he has been one our best batsmen this year.

“He hasn’t scored the runs he would have wanted to in the World Cup, but every training he looks like he is close and every innings he looks like he is close. A good score is just around the corner from him.

“We will hopefully make a call earlier than the morning of the game. In an ideal world I want to give Temba as much time to play for his country,” added Walter. “We’re taking it day by day and will make a decision as soon as we can.”
