CHAMPIONS: Shimlas beat Ikeys to Varsity Cup crown in dramatic fashion https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/champions-shimlas-beat-ikeys-to-varsity-cup-crown-in-dramatic-fashion/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 19:30:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2075405 Ethan Wentzel nailed a stoppage time penalty to give hosts Shimlas a remarkable 45-42 triumph over Ikeys in the grand finale of the Varsity Cup.

In a high-scoring game played at a frenetic pace from start to finish, the two sides scored a combined 11 tries, of eight were scored in a breathless first half.

Ikeys crossed for a game-tying try in the 78th minute, affording themselves an opportunity to win the game with the conversion. But the kick attempt was wide off the mark, leaving the sides deadlocked a 42 apiece.

With more second remaining on the clock, Ikeys failed to secure possession from the kick off as Shimlas successfully disrupted their ball security in the air. From there, the home side stormed forward via a rolling maul and when the referee put out his hand to confirm they had a penalty advantage, Shimlas had a free play to go for the sought after try.

But with nothing forthcoming, the ref went back to the penalty and Wentzel lined up and smoothly slotted the title-deciding kick at goal to win the game for his time.

More to follow…

Varsity Cup final: Team sheets, kick-off times https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/varsity-cup-final-2024-team-sheets-kick-off-times/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 10:24:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2074856 The 16th edition of the hugely popular Varsity Cup is headed for an epic conclusion, with Shimlas schedule to host the UCT Ikeys in the grand finale later today.

STATS AND FACTS THAT MATTER:

Very little separates the sides overall, but there are certain facets of the game where one outperformed the other so far in this year’s campaign.

Shimlas have scored with more tries and points, giving them the upper-hand in attacking play. But Ikeys have conceded fewer points, meaning they have a much-better defence and are more disciplined.

With the final taking place in Bloemfontein, Shimlas will have home advantage, but the Ikeys beat them in their own backyard when they met in opening round of the competition.

THE TEAMS SELECTED FOR VARSITY CUP FINAL ACTION BELOW:

Shimlas — 15 Michael Jnr Kurt Annies, 14 Siviwe Zondani, 13 Zane Bester, 12 Gideon Jooste Nel, 11 Asanda Sihle Kunene, 10 Ethan SJ Wentzel, 9 Jandre Nel, 8 Kwezi Dlamini, 7 Pierre-Raymond Freddie Uys, 6 Sobe Siyambuka Nakhane Ningiza, 5 John Raymond Stopforth, 4 Reinier Juan Martin Viljoen, 3 Francisco Dos Reis, 2 Liyema Mgwigwi, 1 Ntokozo Hlophe.

FLASHBACK: UCT Ikeys pull off greatest comeback in Varsity Cup history https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/flashback-uct-ikeys-pull-off-greatest-comeback-in-varsity-cup-history-watch-video-result/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 10:01:50 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2074849 It may have been the greatest comeback in rugby history – let alone Varsity Cup history.

In the 74th minute of the 2014 final, it looked like former Springbok scrumhalf Robert du Preez had led his NWU-Pukke side to a comprehensive victory with the men from Potchefstroom ahead 33-15.

Then the unthinkable happened.

Not once, not twice, but three times!

The never-say-die UCT Ikeys scored a hat-trick of tries in the remaining minutes to snatch the Varsity Cup trophy with a 39-33 victory.

Varsity Cup final

Fast forward 10 years and the men from the Cape are back in the final on Monday, 22 April.

This time they will be up against UFS Shimlas at Shimla Park.

Kick-off is at 19:00.

The UCT Ikeys will be looking for a third Varsity Cup title, while UFS Shimlas are seeking a second success.

For interest’s sake, UCT beat 38-32 Shimlas in Bloemfontein in the opening round of this year’s tournament.

Slick Shimlas send Maties packing to reach final https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/varsity-cup-slick-shimlas-send-maties-packing-in-semi-final/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 06:46:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2068913 Maties crashed out of contention for the Varsity Cup title after slumping to a 38-24 defeat against Shimlas at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Monday.

SEMI-FINAL RECAP: MATIES 24-38 SHIMLAS

The visitors from Bloemfontein were more accurate in their execution by outscoring the home side by five tries to four in ideal weather conditions.

Shimlas dominated the first quarter of the game with their forwards and backs combining well to score two tries within the first 20 minutes of the game for a 12-0 lead.

The home side’s pack started to assert themselves up front after being on the receiving end of some harsh words from head coach Kabama Floors during the strategy break after 20 minutes, which is one of the Varsity Cup’s many on-field innovations.

Maties crossed for two tries of their own, one either wide of the half-time break, but a penalty and two more tries extended Shimlas’ lead to 29-12 to just about put the game — and with that, a place in the Varsity Cup final — outside of the home side’s grasp.

But as expected, the Maroon Machine didn’t go down without a fight. They showed great character by scoring twice in the final 15 minutes of the Varsity Cup semi-final. But their defence let them down once again by conceding a fifth try to the visitors to wrap up the result and secure a place in the final.

UCT IKEYS 32-18 NWU EAGLES

UCT Ikeys saw off NWU Eagles 32-18 in a thrilling encounter at the Fanie du Toit Sports Ground in Potchefstroom.

Ikeys began the game in a dominant fashion with left wing Ntokozo Makhaza landing a penalty in the first five minutes.

A drop goal by the Eagles’ Zinedine Robinson levelled the scores before Ntokozo Makhaza scored another penalty to restore the lead for the visitors.

Tian Van Zyl scored the first try of the game to give the Eagles the lead for the first time in the game.

Duran Koevort then responded for the Ikeys with a try before another Makhaza penalty handed UCT a 14-8 lead at half-time.

The visitors began the second period in the same manner with Koevort’s second try and yet another penalty by Makhaza. Mpho Kubheka reduced the deficit with a try for NWU moments after coming on.

A brilliant run by Rethabile Louw saw him distributing to Mika Schubert who scored in the corner for Ikeys.

Calvin Clark scored a try in the dying minutes of the game for the Eagles but it was too late as yet another penalty by Makhaza sealed an emphatic victory for UCT.

UFS SHIMLAS 38-24 MATIES

UFS Shimlas scored a convincing 38-24 win over Maties at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The visitors from Bloemfontein were more accurate in their execution by outscoring the home side by five tries to four in ideal weather conditions.

UFS dominated the first quarter of the game with their forwards and backs combining well to score two tries within the first 20 minutes of the game.

The first was a point-of-origin try when fleet-footed fullback Michael Annies crossed over in the corner after 15 minutes.

Four minutes later left wing Asanda Kunene crossed over in the opposite corner to give his side a 12-0 lead.

Maties coach Kabama Floors had some harsh words to say at the strategy break after 20 minutes.

The home side’s forwards started to assert themselves up front. After a few driving mauls, big lock forward Matthys Kitshoff drove over for Maties first five-pointer.

Flyhalf Juan Mostert added the extras to reduce the deficit to 12-7 in favour of the visitors at half-time.

Maties immediately hit back from the kick-off after a sniping break by centre Aydon Topley who floated the ball into the hand of left-wing Ezekiel Ngobeni who crossed for the home side’s second try.

Mostert slotted the conversion from the touchline to narrow the score to 15-12.

Shimlas winger Kunene then showed his pace by crossing over for his second with Wentzel coolly slotting the conversion to give his side a 22-12 lead.

The visitors started to show their dominance after the strategy break when replacement Cornelius Volschenk sliced through the middle of the Maties defence to score another try which was converted by Wentzel to stretch the lead to 29-12.

Maties showed character by fighting back through an Aydon Topley try.

In the final 10 minutes, the Maroon Machine went into overdrive sensing the time starting to run out.

They had no option but to throw the ball around.

UFS outside centre Zane Bester intercepted the ball against the run of play and ran the length of the field to score a converted try to make the score 38-17 in favour of the visitors from Bloemfontein.

Maties scored a consolation try by replacement Ammaar Burton in the dying minutes to make the final score 38-24.

A look at the log standings shows that four teams have distanced themselves from the chasing pack and will fight it out for for semi-final spots.

Defending champions NWU Eagles lead the way on 25 points, followed by UCT Ikeys, Maties and UFS Shimlas all on 23 points.

Maties should have no trouble in beating CUT away from home and banking a full-house of five log points.

A win for UCT – without a bonus point – could be enough for Maties to top the log and host a home final should they progress that far.

In other matches, Wits host UFS Shimlas, while UJ and NWU clash in a bottom of the table clash in Johannesburg.

The fourth fixture of the round — between defending champions NWU Eagles and UJ in Johannesburg — was called off after 34 minutes in the first half due to lightning, heavy rain and hail. The Eagles were leading 19-7 at that stage.

The Varsity Cup game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, 19 March at 10:00 and will be closed for spectators.

VARSITY CUP WRAP (ROUND FIVE)

Shimlas 59-40 CUT

UFS Shimlas claimed the bragging rights and a fourth straight bonus point win with a 59-40 victory over CUT Ixias in Bloemfontein.

In a game of two halves, it was one-way traffic in the first stanza at a packed CUT Rugby Stadium as the Shimlas taught their neighbours a lesson in running rugby in the Varsity Cup. The super-impressive Shimlas outside centre, Zane Bester, led the charge for the visitors by scoring a brace of point-of-origin tries in the first forty-minute period for a 43-7 lead.

In the second 40-minute period, the flow of the traffic went the other way, and the Ixias showcased their renowned fighting spirit with Janco Cloete, Adielson Gouveia (point-of-origin), Juan Smith, Asekho Marubelela and Tiaan Naudé scoring to give themselves a sniff. But, tries by Shimlas flyhalf Ethan Wentzel and captain Neels Volschenk put it out of reach for the valiant Ixias.

Maties 63-14 UWC

Five-time Varsity Cup champions Maties outgunned bottom-of-the-log UWC 63-19 in their Cape derby in Bellville. The men from Stellenbosch built a solid base following a 19-7 half-time lead.

Wits 33-33 UWC

Wits fought back to hold a determined UCT Ikeys to a 33-33 stalemate in their Varsity Cup encounter at the Wits Stadium.

The half-time score was 28-10 in favour of Ikeys, and it took a last-minute try and conversion for the Wits to avoid defeat against a team they enjoyed the better of in the territory and possession battle in an epic Varsity Cup showdown.

Maties beat rivals the UCT Ikey Tigers at a windswept Green Mile in Cape Town, Shimlas edged UJ in Johannesburg, the Eagles thrashed visitors UWC in Potchefstroom and Wits toppled CUT in Johannesburg.

VARSITY CUP WRAP (ROUND TWO)

It was Maties who walked away smiling after a gutsy 15-10 win over UCT Ikeys at the Green Mile in Cape Town.

Facing heavy wind, the Ikey Tigers fought hard to stop the Maties pack, who held the home side tight in their 22-metre area. Both sides showed gutsy performances as the wind continued to blow at the Green Mile, something that seemed to be the difference on the field, with no scores to show after 15 minutes of play.

Seven minutes before half-time, the Maroon Machine finally took advantage as winger Matthew Emile van Schalkwyk ran through the Tigers’ wall to dive under the poles. The try came just a few minutes after flyhalf Juan Mostert slotted a penalty.

The Cape Winelands side took a comfortable 10-0 lead as the game headed to the end of the first stanza.

Ikey Tigers winger Ntokozo Makhaza gave the home fans hope as he scored a penalty after Maties were penalised for being offside, taking the score to 10-3.

Maties extended their lead to 15-3 with nine minutes left, courtesy of a try by loosehead prop Vernon Matongo.

The Ikeys retaliated in the final minutes when Jonathan Roche scored a try, and Makhaza converted.

Elsewhere, the NWU Eagles continued on their unbeaten start to this year’s competition with a dominant 49-15 victory against UWC at the Fanie du Toit Sports Ground in Potchefstroom.

There was more misery for UJ, who slumped to their second consecutive loss when they went down 34-31 to the visiting Shimlas at in Joburg.

Wits fought back from a half-time deficit to secure their second victory of the season when they beat CUT 34-17 in front of an excited home crowd also in Johannesburg.

The Varsity Cup’s Western Cape derby, which kicked off at 19:00, was penciled it for a prime time slot on SuperSport. But the pay-TV broadcaster, together with the tournament organisers, have now confirmed that the game will not be screened due to circumstances beyond its control.

VARSITY CUP WRAP (ROUND ONE)

Defending Varsity Cup champions NWU Eagles, got their title defence off to an almost perfect start with a comfortable 20-12 win over Maties in front of a packed Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

Despite it being a rather low-scoring affair, the Eagles were rewarded for their attacking endeavour, while their staunch defensive showing also successfully shut out a Maties attack that at times seemed toothless and without the real X-factor.

It was the Eagles who had all the right moves, with the playmaking pair of Aphelele Mdaka (scrumhalf) and Zinedine Robinson (flyhalf) pulling the string. The Eagles also played with a bit of reckless abandon, with Robinson not afraid to send the ball out wide for his wingers to chance their arm.

Meanwhile, it was a near-perfect start for Wits when they outsmarted newcomers UWC 66-10 in Bellville at the UWC Sport Stadium. A healthy 31-10 halftime lead meant the visitors had secured the bonus point when the siren sounded.

Nine tries to a solo 38th-minute try from UWC’s second rower Louan De Lange is a testament to an all-around clinical and disciplined display of rugby by the visiting side.

In other results elsewhere, UCT Ikeys drew beat Shimlas 38-32 in a hard-fought contest in Bloemfontein. The hosts outscored the visitors in the tries department, but it was ultimately their discipline that let them down as the left-winger for the Ikeys, Ntokozo Makhaza landed no less than seven penalties.

And also in Bloemfontein, dogged defending from CUT as well as poor discipline from UJ handed the former a handy 23-19 victory at home.

FNB Varsity Cup Women’s final

The University of Stellenbosch, who topped the table in a tournament that was, shall we say, truncated were clearly ready for a victory celebration.

They crossed the try line seven times in the first half alone and went into the half-time break 53 – 0 up.

In the second half, UJ were able to score a try but in the end, Maties added an extra 10 points to finish the game 63 – 9. Now if you are wondering how a team can score a try and end the game with nine points, you are not alone. It’s because of a Varsity Cup rule called the Point of Origin (POR). When a team gains possession of the ball inside their own half and goes on to score a try without losing possession of the ball the try is awarded two extra points.

FNB Maties points:

  • Tries: Ropah Madyah (POR x 2), Danelle van Zyl (POR), Janke Oosthuizen, Ankia Viljoen, Bianca Augustyn, Danelle van Zyl, Amber Meiring (2)
  • Conversions: Elmé Kruger (6)

Those four sides make up the semi-finals, which will see Shimlas host the UCT Ikeys in Bloemfontein in the first playoff, followed by the Eagles welcoming Maties to Potchefstroom for the second elimination match next week.

LIVE UPDATES: SPRINGBOKS’ ROAD TO THE RUGBY WORLD CUP

Round 7 Varsity Cup recap:

FNB UFS SHIMLAS 44 FNB MATIES 12

The visiting UFS Shimlas put on a masterclass of attacking rugby as they thrashed the Maties 44-12 at the Danie Craven stadium and booked a home semi-final with the Maties sneaking in through the back door.

Shimlas scored six tries and only conceded two against an out-of-sorts Maties outfit.

FNB UCT IKEYS 79 FNB CUT IXIAS 31

The CUT Ixias’ 2023 Varsity Cup campaign came to a grinding halt as a rampant UCT Ikeys beat them 79-31 at CUT Park in Bloemfontein.

The third straight defeat ended the Ixias’ chances of making the semi-finals, and now they are facing the prospect of having to play in a promotion-relegation match. Ikeys in turn secured their spot in the top four.

FNB UJ 38 FNB UP-TUKS 31

UJ escaped the dreaded promotion-relegation zone with a 38-31 victory over UP-Tuks in Pretoria.

For the defending champion Tuks — whose relegation to the Varsity Shield has already been confirmed — it was a disappointing end to a dreadful season as they finished bottom of the log with no victories.

FNB NWU EAGLES 36 FNB WITS 3

Log leaders the NWU Eagles snuffed any hopes Wits had of qualifying for the semi-finals with a 36-3 victory in Johannesburg. The half-time score was 17-3.

Kick-off for the match was at 19:00 but the final whistle only blew at 23:15 as the players were forced from the field due to bad weather and heavy lightning strikes.

LIVE UPDATES: SPRINGBOKS’ ROAD TO THE RUGBY WORLD CUP

SETTING THE SCENE

CUT take on UCT Ikeys in Bloemfontein in a must-win game for both teams, with a victory that could push them into the top four. Both teams are on 17 points on the log, with Ikeys one position above CUT courtesy of a better points difference.

Wits are looking to stake their claim for a place in the semi-final in their game against NWU Eagles in Johannesburg. Witsies have 18 points and are lying fourth, with the Eagles at the top on 27.

Maties host UFS Shimlas in Stellenbosch in another crucial match. Maties occupy the number two spot on the log with Shimlas at number three. The Maroon Machine would want to secure a home semi-final while the Free State team would want to remain in contention.

UP-Tuks and UJ face off in a bottom-of-the-log match in Pretoria that is of pure academical value. The defending champions have already been relegated to the Varsity Shield for 2024 but would want to save face with a last-gasp victory. The Orange Army could move out of a possible relegation match against Madibaz with a victory.

BREAKING NEWS: Tuks relegated from Varsity Cup to Varsity Shield https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/breaking-news-tuks-relegated-from-varsity-cup-to-varsity-shield-27-march-2023/ Mon, 27 Mar 2023 17:39:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1529684 Tuks have been relegated to the Varsity Shield for next season after their 33-21 loss to Wits on Monday condemned them a bottom of the table finish in this year’s Varsity Cup.

As the defending title-holders and the joint five-time champions, alongside Maties, Tuks are basically Varsity Cup royalty.

But the unthinkable happened on Monday, when it was confirmed that the defending champion Tuks no longer have Varsity Cup status as they find themselves relegated to the Varsity Shield after suffering six from six defeats in 2023, resulting in a wooden spoon finish.

Varsity Cup: Round 6 fixtures and results – Monday, 27 March 2023

Tuks’ relegation also means they become the first defending champions in Varsity Cup history to be demoted to the Varsity Shield the very next year after being crowned champions.

Coming into this round of regular season action, Tuks had lost all five of their games and with the second-last placed Wits having won two games to date, the side from Pretoria needed to their last to matches of the campaign to have a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.

That permutation set-up the clash between the side from Pretoria and Wits nicely.

TUKS COME UP SHORT IN MUST-WIN CLASH

Wits started off brightly as they raced to a 19-0 lead courtesy of three tries. Tuks responded with one try to go into the break trailing 19-7.

Wits would extended their advantage with a fourth score, but realising that their Varsity Cup status was slipping away, Tuks launched a comeback, closing the deficit to just five with about eight minutes remaining in the contest. But Wits sealed the victory and with that Tuks’ fate with a fifth and final try.

Elsewhere, Maties slumped to shock 47-38 defeat against UJ. The Orange Army from Johannesburg were always in control of the contest and looked well on their way to a big bonus-point win when the Maroon Machine from Stellenbosch ran in two late tries to at least add some respectability to the scoreboard.

Varsity Cup: Players who impressed in round 2 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/varsity-cup/varsity-cup-players-who-impressed-in-round-2-news-1-march-2023/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 12:51:26 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1495139 The action came thick and fast in round 2 of the 2023 Varsity Cup with a few upsets. Here are the standout players who made their mark during those hotly contested matches.

MUST WATCH: The Varsity Cup ‘okes’ are back at it again

Ntokozo Makhaza (UCT Ikeys)

With two tries, three conversions and three penalties and scoring 25 of his team’s 40 points, Ikeys winger Ntokozo Makhaza was almost singlehandedly responsible for the demise of five-time champions UP-Tuks. He has certainly set a high standard for the rest of the tournament.

Tyler Sefoor (CUT)

Flyhalf Tyler Sefoor kept the scoreboard ticking over for CUT as he contributed 13 points to his team’s surprise win over Maties. He showed enormous composure to successfully land all of his kicks and his boot was ultimately the difference.

Debate: Is CUT’s win over Maties the BIGGEST upset in Varsity Cup history?

Lyle Hendricks (UCT Ikeys)

Recruit Lyle Hendricks had a key hand in UCT Ikeys scoring an upset victory over defending champions UP-Tuks. It certainly didn’t look like this is his first season with the Ikeys as he 100% showed up in a high-tempo game.

Ziyanda Masipha (Wits)

Two tries by Wits’ ZiyandaMasipha spurred his team on to an epic come-from-behind victory over UJ. The work rate of the number eight and the intensity he brought to the match earned him the accolade of the Player That Rocks.

MUST-WATCH: Is this Wits derby win the GREATEST-EVER comeback in the Varsity Cup?

Vernon Paulo (NWU Eagles)

NWU Eagles Vernon Paulo had a stellar performance and the burly forward played a crucial role in his team’s impressive win over UFS Shimlas. He also crossed the try-line and his hard work was duly awarded when he was named the Player That Rocks.
