Plumtree has brought in some of his players currently in Vodacom United Rugby Championship preseason training, as well as selecting new signings Ruan Dreyer at prop, Emmanuel Tshituka at flank and Jordan Hendrikse at fullback.

Nick Hatton leads as John Plumtree takes Sharks helm

Nick Hatton continues in his role as captain, leading the side as he has so well all season.

He will call on the experience of players both in the starting lineup and off the bench, certainly the return of wing Makazole Mapimpi from the Springboks is a big boost, as are the likes of young Ethan Hooker, James Venter, Fez Mbatha, Dylan Richardson and Vincent Tshituka.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks are back at Hollywoodbets Kings Park for the final two rounds of the Carling Currie Cup competition, hosting the NovaVit Griffons on Saturday in the penultimate pool match.

With six players absent through injury the depth of the Sharks squad will be on display in Durban.

The Sharks are third on the overall log and second in the group heading towards the final two rounds of action. The heat will be on the Durban side with competition for playoff places really heating up. The Pumas remain hot on the heels of the Sharks.

As things stand the Griffons are well out of contention for a semi-final place but would love to cause problems for the Sharks on their own patch.

Saturday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 13:00.

Bulls rotate for tricky contest with Griquas https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/bulls-rotate-tricky-contest-griquas/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 12:44:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2162793 Phiwe Nomlomo has opted to switch up his matchday squad for the Bulls next Currie Cup engagement.

Nomlomo wants a big effort up front to overwhelm their foes Griquas.

Bulls make seven changes

“We have made seven changes with one positional switch as we continue on our journey of being a team that continues to play with any one of our players, anywhere in the park.

“There are a few things we have seen with the Griquas so we are looking for a massive point of entry once more this week with the selection we have made” comments Phiwe Nomlomo on his matchday 23 for round 8 Carling Currie Cup.

Amongst the changes made by Nomlomo is Tielman Nieuwoudt who returns to partner up with Joe van Zyl who has been on an impressive run of form this campaign, with Mornay Smith completing the front row. Cyle Brink starts at lock alongside Jannes Kirsten as skipper, Nizaam Carr shifts to flank alongside Mihlali Mosi with Celimpilo Gumede starting at eight.

“We are looking for a bit more and we wanted to play with a bit more loosies and we were able to do that this weekend as we go deep into the competition,” Nomlomo adds.

On Griquas: “They have nothing to lose and I foresee them throwing the kitchen sink at us and might look to hold on to the ball a lot more and look to ask us a lot of good questions, trying to force us to make a lot of tackles which will make for an exciting game for all of us on the stands.”

Key changes to the backs

Keagan Johannes who impressed with his veiled kicking proclivity in round seven is retained at scrumhalf, pairing up with Jaco van der Walt at flyhalf. Behind the halfbacks will be Stravino Jacobs at left wing with the Smit’s retained at the centre, respectively. Henry Immelman returns to the mix and will get a run at right wing with Devon Williams at fullback.

The impact squad sees Juann Else, Dylan Smith, Khuthazani Mchunu, Sintu Manjezi, Merwe Olivier, Bernard van der Linde, Boeta Chamberlain, Katlego Letebele all assembled and on standby for duty.

Speaking about Letebele, Nomlomo says: “He is one hell of a good kid, smiles a lot, asks all the good questions and you can see he is happy to be in the squad. We will look to use him differently this weekend. He ran at wing on debut but he is a genuine outside centre and I am hoping we will get to see him run at centre,”

“His adaptation has been seamless and that probably speaks to what he has been doing at the SVNS environment.

“We are looking for outside backs who have a massive work rate and can cover a lot of mileage on the park and get touches on the ball, that is what is exciting about him. He also understands us and what we want to get done, he is a natural (Vodacom) Bulls at heart which makes it easy to have him a part of the system.”

Only three rounds remain before the semi-finals, making each game played before then crucial for every team, especially those just outside the top four at the moment.

Currie Cup on TV this weekend

The round kicks off in Pretoria on Friday evening when the log leading Vodacom Bulls face a tricky home encounter against a Suzuki Griquas side eager to move out of the basement on the standings.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV travel to Cape Town for their Saturday afternoon coastal derby with DHL Western Province, and the KwaZulu-Natalians will no doubt hope to continue with their climb up the league ladder.

Saturday’s other match is a big cat fight between the Toyota Cheetahs and Fidelity ADT Lions in Bloemfontein, while the fourth clash of the round will be staged in Welkom on Sunday afternoon, when the NovaVit Griffons take on the Airlink Pumas.

When the action kicks off on Friday evening at Loftus Versfeld, the Vodacom Bulls will be up against a Suzuki Griquas side desperate to improve on their two wins so far.

Although the Northern Cape side managed a big away win over the NovaVit Griffons last Sunday, they must now prepare themselves for their toughest battle of the campaign, with a short turnaround to Friday’s outing another factor they have to cope.

Bulls looking strong in Currie Cup tilt

The Vodacom Bulls, this year coached by Phiwe Nomlomo, have won six from seven and also bagged a draw, and with another home semi-final firmly in sight, they will be in no mood to take the foot off the pedal at Fortress Loftus.

In Saturday’s early match in Cape Town, DHL WP will also be desperate for a win against the resurgent Hollywoodbets Sharks XV. It won’t be easy against the visitors from KZN, who have managed to shrug off a slow start to register three wins and a draw in their last four matches.

The Capetonians will have to step up on defence especially, if they want to contain the Durbanites.

This encounter will also underline the value of SA Rugby’s elite player development pathway, with several 2024 Junior Springboks in line to face each other at DHL Stadium.

DHL WP have already handed debuts to SA U20 captain Zachary Porthen (prop), Divan Fuller (loose forward) and JC Mars (wing) in recent weeks, while their Junior Boks teammates from a few weeks ago, Batho Hlekani (lock), Ethan Bester (hooker), Litelihle Bester and Jurenzo Julius (midfielders) have been impressive recently for the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV.

Cat fight

Former Springbok and nowadays Director of Rugby for the Toyota Cheetahs, Frans Steyn, this week branded the match between the Free Staters and the Fidelity ADT Lions in Bloemfontein as a “big cat fight”.

The Joburgers are second on the log, three points adrift of the leaders, and four ahead of the Toyota Cheetahs, who are currently third on 24 points.

Mziwakhe Nkosi’s Lions have lost only once so far and have played some impressive attacking rugby in their six wins, but defending champions, the Toyota Cheetahs, have lost two and drawn one, so a huge battle awaits them in Bloemfontein on Saturday, where a victory will see them back in the hunt for a home semi-final.

In Sunday’s last encounter of the round, Jimmy Stonehouse’s Airlink Pumas will also be eager for a win over the NovaVit Griffons when they meet in Welkom, after the team from Mpumalanga’s last win was in round four, almost a month ago.

As a result, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV have bumped the Airlink Pumas, champions in 2022, down to fifth spot on the log, so there’s plenty to play for in Welkom.

Sharks show depth for Cape Town trip https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/sharks-show-depth-cape-town-trip/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 13:45:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2162169 The Hollywoodbets Sharks hit the road for the last time in the pool stages of the Carling Currie Cup competition when they head to Cape Town on Saturday to take on DHL Western Province in a highly-anticipated coastal derby.

The two teams have met numerous times over the years and the fixture never fails to excite as the two old foes go head-to-head in this year’s competition for the first time this season, having last met in June 2023.

URC players absent

Like the Hollywoodbets Sharks, Province are also missing their regular URC players and have a young side competing in this year’s tournament, but haven’t quite hit their stride in the way the Durban side has of late.

With two wins from their seven fixtures, Province are fighting for a top four finish and will have to rely on both some good personal form and a few upsets as they chase their way from sixth spot, seven points behind the Hollywoodbets Sharks who have climbed into fourth place on the log, their surge coming off the back of three wins and a draw from their last four matches.

Head coach JP Pietersen has made four changes to his backline, starting with scrumhalf Bradley Davids in for Jaden Hendrikse who has linked up with the Springboks after getting back to match fitness in the Currie Cup.

A new and imposing centre pairing of Francios Venter and Jurenzo Julius replaces last week’s midfield du of Alwayno Visagie and Lili Bester respectively, while Tiaan Swanepoel comes in for Hakeem Kunene at fullback.

There is just one change to the pack, where Siya Ningiza takes over from the impressive Jannes Potgieter who has enjoyed a stellar debut season at flank.

Saturday’s match at DHL Stadium in Cape Town kicks off at 15:00 and can be viewed on SuperSport.

Currie Cup logs live: Updated standings https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-logs-live-updated-standings/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 07:01:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159040 With six rounds of the Currie Cup completed, things are now starting to heat up and only four cross-group matches remaining before the two semi-finals.

Here we take a look at how the logs look after the recent matches in the Currie Cup.

Currie Cup logs

Currie Cup round seven

Carling Currie Cup log leaders the Vodacom Bulls continued on their unbeaten run when they travelled to Nelspruit for their Premier Division clash with the Airlink Pumas on Friday. The Bulls won 40-24 on the road.

In a pulsating match that treated fans to some incredible skills and great tries, the Bulls took five log points from the first clash of the weekend.

On Saturday, the Lions dealt a killer blow to Western Province’s playoff hopes when they held off a late fightback to take a win away from their meeting. The Lions claimed a 41-22 win over WP and cemented their place in the playoff spots as they top their group.

The Pumas loss to the Bulls gave the Sharks an opportunity to move into the playoff spots this weekend. A bright start from the Sharks that saw Yaw Penxe cross twice ensured that the visiting Sharks held a half time lead in Bloemfontein. Free State fought hard but a second half try from Eduan Keyter proved the difference between the sides.

After playing some enterprising in stages this campaign, the NovaVit Griffons will most likely target their Sunday afternoon clash with Suzuki Griquas as a must-win encounter. However, Pieter Bergh’s visiting outfit will, in turn, eye a much-needed winning performance to hopefully kickstart a turnaround in form which have delivered just one win from six starts.

]]> Currie Cup TV guide: How and when to watch https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-tv-guide-how-and-when-to-watch/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 07:47:50 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2158221 Currie Cup log leaders the Bulls will be out to continue on their unbeaten run when they travel to Nelspruit for their Premier Division clash with the Airlink Pumas on Friday.

This 17:15 fixture at Mbombela Stadium, where the Vodacom Bulls last lost in 2021, kicks off the weekend’s exciting Premier Division action.

The Mpumalanga clash will be followed by two more encounters on Saturday. Second-placed Fidelity ADT Lions host DHL Western Province from 15:00 in Johannesburg, and the Toyota Cheetahs take on the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV at 17:15 in Bloemfontein.

A Central South African derby between the NovaVit Griffons and Suzuki Griquas round off the weekend’s fixtures on Sunday, at 15:00, in Welkom.

Currie Cup gets down to semi-final battle

With six rounds completed, things are now starting to heat up and only four cross-group matches remaining before the two semi-finals.

Five wins and a draw see the Vodacom Bulls leading the pack on 26 league points, three ahead of the chasing duo of the Fidelity ADT Lions and Toyota Cheetahs, who are currently involved in a cat fight for second place and the right to host a semi-final.

The Airlink Pumas have won three and managed a draw, and the 2022 champions are still searching for that edge and consistency which have made them such a formidable opponent, especially at home in Nelspruit.

Therefore, on current form, the visitors from Pretoria can be considered favourites against the Lowvelders, who are sitting in fourth spot (18 points) and are involved in a heavy tussle with the resurgent Hollywoodbets Sharks XV (17 points) for the last of the four semi-final spots.

WP trying to catch hold of Lions’ tails

Compared to DHL WP, their opponents this weekend, the Fidelity ADT Lions are flying at the moment, with nine points separating the two rivals.

The Highvelders have a formidable pack and play their best rugby at Emirates Airline Park, so another trying assignment awaits the Capetonians, who last week lost to defending champions Toyota Cheetahs at home and will have to grab a win to remain the semi-final race.

Meanwhile, the Bloemfontein outfit will be in action immediately afterwards when they welcome the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV to Toyota Stadium in the Free State capital.

It also looks like the Durbanites have found their rhythm after a slow start, which saw them losing their first three games of the campaign.

Since then, the KwaZulu-Natalians have managed a draw and two good wins, including last week’s impressive 40-21 romp over Suzuki Griquas.

Fans in Bloemfontein can expect an exciting match as the defending champions would want to keep momentum and their search for a home semi-final, while the Durbanites have top-four ambitions too.

Sunday action

After playing some enterprising in stages this campaign, the NovaVit Griffons will undoubtedly target their Sunday afternoon clash with Suzuki Griquas as a must-win encounter.

However, Pieter Bergh’s visiting outfit will, in turn, eye a much-needed winning performance to hopefully kickstart a turnaround in form which have delivered just one win from six starts.

Bulls welcome back stars for Mbombela sojourn https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/bulls-welcome-back-stars-mbombela-sojourn/ Thu, 15 Aug 2024 12:54:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157763 Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo has recalled the services of skipper Nizaam Carr and Devon Williams ahead of the Bulls’ seventh-round fixture against the Airlink Pumas.

Carr and Williams, who were URC stalwarts, were on a much-deserved week-long rest and now return for the trip to Mpumalanga as the herd hunts for playoffs securing points.

Bulls kick off busy rugby weekend

Nomlomo’s chargers meet with the side from the land of the rising sun on Friday 16 August, with kick-off set for 17:15.

There is also returns for Chris Barend Smit who will pair up at centre with Cornel Smit who is set for his first Currie Cup appearance for the herd. Junior Springbok vice-captain and Blitzbok Katlego Letebele is poised for his senior Vodacom Bulls debut, forming part of the impact squad. The creative backliner will be hoping to utilise his SVNS experience and pace when his services are called on under the Mbombela lights.

Bulls’ Bruisers

Elsewhere, Dylan Smith will be alongside Joe van Zyl and Mornay Smith in the front row with Jannes Kirsten and Sintu Manjezi behind them at lock. Player of the match in round six, Nama Xaba will be alongside Merwe Olivier at flank with captain Carr at eight.

Keagan Johannes gets a start at scrumhalf, pairing up with flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain at halfback.

Sibongile ‘Eazi’ ka Novuka starts at left wing. Springbok ace Canan Moodie shifts to the right wing. The Smits occupy the centre with versatile Devon Williams at fullback.

Juan Else, Jacques van Rooyen, Khuthazani ‘Khutha’ Mchunu, Cyle Brink, Celimpilo ‘Mpilo’ Gumede, Bernard van der Linde, Jaco van der Walt and Letebele all form part of a five-three split impact squad that will be called upon in Nelspruit.

The Bulls also currently top the Currie Cup standings after six rounds of action. Meanwhile the Pumas are fourth and have the Sharks and Western Province breathing down their necks.

State of the Currie Cup: Springboks step up in race for playoff spots https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/state-of-the-currie-cup-springboks-step-up-in-race-for-playoff-spots/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 08:39:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156912 The Bulls maintained their unbeaten record in the Currie Cup Premier Division, while the Lions and Cheetahs won their matches to stay in the race for home semi-finals.

HOW THINGS STAND: STATE OF THE COMPETITION

In the first of three Currie Cup fixtures on Saturday, the Lions outplayed the Pumas by 55-12 in Johannesburg. Then it was the turn of Bulls to trump Griffons 55-21 at Loftus Versfeld and on a cold and wet Saturday evening in Cape Town, the Cheetahs gained the round’s only away win by defeating WP 26-19.

In the last fixture of this round of Currie Cup action, staged Sunday in Durban, the Sharks XV maintained their upward curve courtesy of a 40-21 triumph over Griquas.

Following the sixth round of matches, with only four cross-group clashes remaining before the semi-finals, the Bulls still top the Currie Cup log on 26 points, followed by Lions and Cheetahs, both on 23 points.

The Pumas are fourth on 18 points, one point ahead of the resurgent Sharks XV who are now on 17 points following their bonus-point victory on Sunday, three more than WP (14). Griquas (eight) and the Griquas (two) complete the Currie Cup standings.

CURRIE CUP ROUND 6 WRAP:

Lions just too good for Pumas

Playing in the first round six fixture on Saturday, Springbok loose forward Ruan Venter scored three of the Lions’ eight tries as they outclassed the Pumas 55-12 in their Currie Cup showdown in Johannesburg.

Enjoying the perfect winter conditions, the Gauteng outfit quickly raced into a 27-5 lead which they held until halftime. They raised the tempo in the second half to increase their lead, eventually scoring eight tries to two for their fifth win of the Currie Cup campaign.

Apart from Venter, who showed why he made his Springbok debut last month with his hat-trick while assisting several other scorers, Lions flyhalf Bronson Mills also had a good performance in this Currie Cup clash and contributed 20 points to the winning tally via a try, six conversions and a penalty goal.

Unbeaten Bulls bash Griffons

Currie Cup log leaders, the Bulls, romped to a 55-21 triumph over Griffons in a fixture which started late afternoon at Loftus. The hosts scored nine tries, of which five were converted, while their Welkom opponents managed three converted tries.

Left wing Sibongile Novuka capped a good Currie Cup outing for the Bulls with two tries, while Springbok speedster Canan Moodie, playing at fullback, was also on the scoresheet.

The hosts dominated proceedings and held a comfortable 24-7 advantage at the halfway stage and then kicked on for another Currie Cup comfortable victory.

Cheetahs comeback floors floundering WP

In Saturday’s third Currie Cup encounter played in cold winter conditions at DHL Stadium, the Cheetahs recovered from an early 13-0 deficit to outplay WP by 26-19. The Capetonians did just enough in the first half to take 16-12 lead into the break.

However, the Free Staters adjusted better to the wet conditions as the game went on, and in the end, they scored four tries to one for an important away win which kept them in the top-three on the Currie Cup log.

Sharks continue upward trajectory against Griquas

In Sunday’s only encounter, the Sharks XV served notice of their continued improvement in this Currie Cup campaign when they downed Griquas 40-21 in Durban.

JP Pietersen’s team scored their fourth try in the 31st minute, by which time they had managed to build a comfortable 35-7 lead. Although the men from Kimberley outscored the hosts 14-5 in the second half, the Durbanites did enough to secure a solid Currie Cup win.

Springbok scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse made a welcome return to action after a four-month layoff due to a shoulder injury by scoring his team’s first try. Lively Junior Bok outside centre Jurenzo Julius continued his fine form in the Currie Cup and he was once more amongst the try scorers.

WHAT NEXT: ROUND SEVEN MATCH-UPS

Moving on to the next round of Currie Cup action, the Pumas and Bulls will kick off proceedings on Friday, at 17h15, in Nelspruit.

That game is followed by two more on Saturday – the Lions host WP from 15h00 in Johannesburg, and the Cheetahs welcome the Sharks XV to Bloemfontein at 17h15.

The last clash in round seven will be staged in Welkom, where the Griffons host Griquas at 15h00.

Springbok scrumhalf makes long-awaited return from injury https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/springbok-scrumhalf-makes-long-awaited-return-from-injury/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 12:47:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156489 Springbok scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse will make his long-awaited return from injury when he runs out for the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV in Sunday’s Carling Currie Cup clash with the Suzuki Griquas in Durban.

After going unbeaten on the road in their last two matches, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are back at Hollywoodbets Kings Park for Sunday’s return leg match.

Springbok scrumhalf makes long-awaited return

Hendrikse suffered a shoulder injury four months ago, but has been passed fit once again, being named as the starting scrumhalf, with Bradley Davids playing off the bench.

Head coach JP Pietersen has made two further changes to the side that drew with the Airlink Pumas last weekend, handing Mawande Mdanda a start at loosehead in place of Trevor Nyakane, while Yaw Penxe is back on the wing for Jaco Williams.

Hendrikse’s return comes at a pivotal time in the tournament. After three early, albeit narrow, losses, the Hollywoodbets Sharks hit their straps against the Fidelity ADT Lions two weeks ago, putting together an impressive performance to defeat the unbeaten Joburg team, and then suffered a last gasp draw to the Pumas when the Mbombela team drew level with a penalty in the last act of a pulsating game.

The Springbok scrumhalf will look to dictate the pace of the game and his calm style of play will benefit the youngsters around him. Only 24 years of age, it’s hard not to think of him as a youngster, but with 15 test caps to his name since making his international debut as a 21-year-old and a further half century of appearances for the Hollywoodbets Sharks across various competitions, he brings a wealth of experience to the side.

Sunday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 15:00.

The Sharks find themselves adrift of the playoff spots in the Currie Cup and need to make up some ground on the top four. They have recorded just one win in five matches so far this campaign.

SEASON OVER: Springbok NEEDS operation https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/springboks/season-over-springbok-needs-operation/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 12:59:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2155868 Springbok and Stormers ace Evan Roos has been dealt a massive blow following medical advice that would see him sidelined until at least 2025.

Roos starred for the Stormers in throughout the 2023-2024 United Rugby Championship campaign and it was that consistency in performance that earned him a call up to the Springbok squad for the mid-year Tests against Wales, Ireland and Portugal.

But the 24-year-old delivered underwhelming performances in the green and gold and was subsequently omitted from the Springbok squad for the Rugby Championship.

This meant he enjoy an extensive run for Western Province in the Currie Cup, but those plans are now out the window too as injury curtailed his season.

SPRINGBOK ACE OUT FOR SIX MONTHS

According to a report on Rugby365, Roos revealed his need for to undergo urgent surgery on the latest episode of the Boks Office podcast hosted by Springboks Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger and Hanyani Shimange.

Roos also revealed that Western Province and Stormers boss John Dobson is not happy with his decision to have the operation which will rule him out of action for six months.

“I have to sort it out,” the Springbok said. “I don’t know what I am going to do with myself for six months.”

“I then gave him [John Dobson] all the facts,” he explained.

“The doctor said if I continue playing, it will create much bigger problems in the long run. It doesn’t help that I play with an injury and I am not playing to what I feel I can bring to the table,” the Springbok concluded.

Currie Cup TV Guide: How to catch all the action https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-tv-guide-how-to-catch-all-the-action/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 08:41:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153408 The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division reaches its halfway stage this weekend with four more intriguing matches scheduled in the fifth round.

Currie Cup this weekend

Firstly, the defending champions, the Toyota Cheetahs, host log leaders the Bulls in a top-two clash in Bloemfontein on Friday at 17:00.

On Saturday, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV will attempt to build on their good performance in the previous round which saw them registering their first win of the season when they travel north to Nelspruit to face the Airlink Pumas at 15:00.

Secondly, the encounter in the Lowveld is followed by the meeting between DHL Western Province and NovaVit Griffons, from 17:15, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. The Cape side will be hoping to get back on the winning wagon after last weekend’s loss in Pretoria, while the Northern Free Staters showed their attacking potency when going down to a narrow loss in the Free State derby.

In the final match of the round, Suzuki Griquas will be eager to regain lost ground as they host the Fidelity ADT Lions in Sunday afternoon in Kimberley (15:00), with the team from Gauteng equally determined to show their defeat last week at the hands of the KwaZulu-Natalians was just a temporary hiccup.

After four rounds of action, with two matches in the groups remaining before the four single round cross-group encounters start, a clear picture is not only emerging regarding the league contenders, but also the men who are the driving force for those teams.

Top scorers in action

Airlink Pumas playmaker Clinton Swart is currently leading the overall point scoring charts with 63 points. He is followed by Ethan Wentzel of Toyota Cheetahs on 47, whom in turn is two points ahead of Sam Francis (Fidelity ADT Lions) and Jaco van der Walt, who had a blinder for the Vodacom Bulls in last weekend North-South win in Pretoria, both on 45.

The leading try scorer list is headed by Vodacom Bulls No 8 Celimpilo Gumede with five, while the duo of Swart and former Blitzbok Angelo Davids of DHL WP are joint-second with four five-pointers each.

The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division had seen a feast of attacking rugby and lots of exciting tries thus far, as evident by the number of successful conversions. Swart also leads the way with 17 two-pointers of the kicking tee, Wentzel is next on 15, followed by Jurie Matthee (DHL WP, 13), Francis (11) and Van der Walt (10).

Canan Moodie returns as Bulls face Currie Cup champs https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/canan-moodie-returns-bulls-face-currie-cup-champs/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 07:07:01 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153290 Springbok winger Canan Moodie and versatile back rower Cyle Brink headline the Vodacom Bulls matchday 23 that travels to Bloemfontein for round five of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup. The team based in the executive capital will take on their counterparts from the judicial capital, the Toyota Cheetahs on Friday afternoon at 17h00.

Utility back Moodie returns to action after being sidelined by a hand repair in early June. The speedster slots into the right-hand side of the park at wing whilst flanker Cyle Brink, sidelined by injury since February, forms part of a five-three split impact squad.

Brink on the bench for the Bulls

Brink will be on standby alongside Tiaan Lange who will get his first run of the season in this campaign, Jacques van Rooyen, Francois Klopper, Sintu Manjezi, Keagan Johannes, Lionel Mapoe and Devon Williams who returns to the matchday fold after overcoming his niggle from round three.

Elsewhere, head coach Phiwe Nomlomo has retained the services of Dylan Smith, Joe van Zyl and Khuthazani Mchunu in the front row. Cobus Wiese has a new partner at lock in the form of Jannes Kirsten with JF van Heerden missing out due to a niggle. Skipper, Nizaam Carr will lace his boots alongside Merwe Olivier at open-side and blind-side flank respectively with Celimpilo Gumede at eight.

Scrumhalf Zak Burger pairs up with flyhalf Jaco van der Walt at halfback with Stravino Jacobs retained on the left wing. Cornal Hendricks slots in at inside centre alongside Aphiwe Dyantyi who will run on his right at outside centre. Boeta Chamberlain’s useful boot will be utilised from fullback.

Nomlomo says they are prepared for a mountainous battle against a well-coached side.

“It is going to be a mighty tough game,”

“They are a really well drilled unit and if you consider that we go there not having taken a win in their home ground in a while, it makes it all exciting especially because both teams have been doing well in this competition”

“Their point of entry is with their kicking game which they use massively to try generate field positions and line outs, forcing you to make mistakes. They also have a good set piece, strong scrum and they maul a fair bit and all of this is driven through their kicking game.”

Herd working hard

On his side’s work ons from a week ago, the Vodacom Bulls coach said: “We had a look at our performance last week and we have worked on the areas of need. We had areas where we showed strength and executed well, so we polished those,”

“We have things we want to work on and we know what we have to do.”

He adds: “From an attack perspective we want to be ruthless and likewise from a defensive point of view. So from my side, we are looking for that all rounded game.”

On the return of Moodie to action, Nomlomo added: “It’s nice to welcome Canan back, I know he has been on the sides for a while now with his injury, so he is keen to get going and it will be good to see him go again.”

VODACOM BULLS vs TOYOTA CHEETAHS STARTING XV:

1. Dylan Smith, 2. Joe van Zyl, 3. Khuthazani ‘Khutha’ Mchunu, 4. Cobus Wiese, 5. Jannes Kirsten, 6. Nizaam Carr (c), 7. Merwe Olivier, 8. Celimpilo Gumede, 9. Zak Burger, 10. Jaco van der Walt, 11. Stravino Jacobs, 12. Cornal Hendricks, 13. Aphiwe Dyantyi, 14. Canan Moodie, 15. Boeta Chamberlain

Sharks break out the big guns for Currie Cup revenge https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/sharks-brea-big-guns-currie-cup-revenge/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 15:16:54 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153155 After last week’s Carling Currie Cup victory over the Lions, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are in week five action against the Airlink Pumas in their return leg match, taking place in Mbombela on Saturday.

The team took great confidence from their bonus point victory, even more merit worthy. In that it came away from home, which will provide added motivation this weekend.

The Sharks need to keep winning

Captain Nick Hatton explained in the lead-up to this match that, “The win restored confidence, we knew we were playing good rugby and were disappointed not to get over the line in two of the games and we needed an 80 minute performance; going forward we need to continue with those 80 minute performances.”

Hatton felt it important though to temper the good news with a reality check, that getting the win was encouraging, they need to keep getting the results.

“The team is in a good space, but we have to understand that it’s just one win and we have another big challenge this weekend. We’re well-aware of what’s ahead, but we are in a good place and the guys believe.

“It’s only one win, but we’re hungry for more.”

Proving hungry were the debutants who wore the senior Black & White jersey for the first time and Hatton admitted that their presence fuelled the team.

“The guys who came in added good value and the junior Springbok players are match ready; they all fitted in really well, they’re really talented players and great guys to work with.”

Head coach JP Pietersen has welcomed back two of his internationals. Springbok prop Trevor Nyakane replaces Mawande Mdanda and Tino Mavesere, back from Zimbabwe’s Rugby Africa Cup campaign, comes in at flank in the two changes to the pack, with Eduan Keyter replacing Yaw Penxe on the wing.

After bringing through numerous youngsters over the past month, Pietersen has named just one debutant, Chris Horak, the former Hilton College and Sharks Craven Week flyhalf as cover off the bench.

Boland defends Currie Cup First Division title amid intense drama https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/boland-defends-currie-cup-first-division-title-amid-intense-drama/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 15:09:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2149777 With more tries scored in the game, the hosts were declared winners despite the score being equal at 27-27 after extra time.

The Sanlam Boland Kavaliers successfully defended their Carling Currie Cup First Division championship in a dramatic final against a tough Eastern Province that went into extra time.

Tries win Boland the Currie Cup first Division title

Boland scored five tries against EP’s four in the championship game, meaning they remained crowned champions and were undefeated for the whole season. The scores were tied 20–20 at the conclusion of 80 minutes and remained at that 20 minutes later.

To their credit, Eastern Province never gave up, and the championship was only won by the hosts’ tenacious defence in the end.

Both sides committed a lot of blunders because of the unfavourable playing conditions—the pitch was extremely muddy, and the weather was windy and wet—as well as the strain of playing in the championship game and some fatigued players at the finish.

After EP battled back to take a 17–15 lead, the Kavaliers scored three unconverted tries in the first half and one more in the second.

Sending it to extra time

Jayden Banton successfully kicked EP’s penalty through the uprights with three minutes remaining in the game to send it into extra time.

Boland scored early in extra time, with Ashlon Davids landing his first kick of the game to make it 27-20, but EP were not done and drew level again.

The Kavaliers knew the rules though and that they would be deemed champions if the scores were tied, and they hung on to seal the deal.

It was a special day for Boland coach Hawies Fourie too, after he won the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division with the Toyota Cheetahs last year, and followed that up with the First Division title on Saturday.

This match does not carry the opportunity to be promoted to the Premier Division.

In 2025 there will also be a shake up of the Premier Division. The top four teams from the “SA Cup” competition will join the four Vodacom URC franchises in the Currie Cup Premier Division, with the remaining six teams contesting the First Division.

Scorers: Currie Cup first Division final

Sanlam Boland Kavaliers 27 (15) – Tries: Neil Rautenbach (2), Dayan van der Westhuizen, Cornell Engelbrecht, Taine-Randall Booysen. Conversion: Ashlon Davids.

Eastern Province 27 (10) – Tries: Temba Boltina, Lungi Mbiko (2), Wayne Ngubane. Conversions: Jayden Bantom (2). Penalty goal: Banton.

Did Boland deserve the title?

Junior Springbok set for Bulls return in Currie Cup clash with WP https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/junior-springbo-bulls-retur-currie-cup-clash-with-wp/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 12:09:53 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2149169 Junior Springbok JF van Heerden headlines six changes made by head coach Phiwe Nomlomo to his Vodacom Bulls side that hosts the DHL Western Province in round 4 of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup at Loftus Versfeld.

Junior Springbok set for Bulls return in Currie Cup

Van Heerden returns from national duty at the recently concluded under-20 Championships and starts at lock alongside Cobus Wiese. Skipper Nizaam Carr pairs up with Merwe Olivier for a second consecutive game with Celimpilo Gumede reinforcing the loose trio at No 8.

Dylan Smith, Joe van Zyl and Khuthazani Mchunu will lead the tight five from the front row.

Zak Burger slots into scrumhalf with Jaco van der Walt marshalling the troops with the boot at flyhalf.

Behind the halfback duo will be Stravino Jacobs at left-wing alongside Sergeal Petersen on the right-hand side of the park and Boeta Chamberlain returning to the matchday 23 at fullback. Chris Barend Smit and Aphiwe Dyantyi are between the back three at centre.

Six-two split in place

Head coach, Phiwe Nomlomo has opted for a six-two split impact squad which sees Juann Else, Jacques van Rooyen, Francois Klopper, Jannes Kirsten, Sintu Manjezi, Nama Xaba, Keagan Johannes and Lionel Mapoe all on standby to offer fresh legs as and when needed.

Nomlomo says he expects another ‘proper derby’ despite changes made to his side and looks forward to seeing some of the rotated players run out.

“We have decided to stick with the six-two split because there is a couple of things we have seen that we want to work on and maybe a point of entry for us. We have asked our forwards to go deep for us tomorrow. We have a really good scrum at the moment and equally, our maul has been unbelievable so that is what we want to carry on and stamp our mark in the game.”

Speaking about the opposition, Nomlomo adds: “They know what we have and maybe they would be surprised by the changes we have made but nothing more than that, so I expect a proper derby, we all know how it has been in the past and I do not expect anything different this time around.”

He adds: “Some of our changes are injury-enforced and others are rotational, this is where we find ourselves; where some guys are starting to pick up niggles and some picking up serious injuries along the way as well, which is not ideal,”

“Equally, we are happy to give guys opportunities. JF returns from the SA under-20s so we are looking forward to seeing him on the park” he concludes.

Currie Cup TV guide: All the matches you can watch this weekend https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-tv-guide-matches-you-can-watch-this-weekend-round-4/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 11:04:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2149104 The Springboks aren’t in action this weekend but the world’s oldest provincial rugby competition highlights a weekend of rugby.

Currie Cup action this weekend

The defending Currie Cup Premier Division champions, the Cheetahs, will be keen to bounce back to winning ways in their Free State derby, while the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV will have to overcome the unbeaten Fidelity ADT Lions if they are to break their season duck in the fourth round this weekend.

Meanwhile, the First Division reaches its final this weekend, with Eastern Province travelling to Wellington where they will aim to cause an upset and take the title from last year’s champions, the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers.

Free State derby in Welkom

The round kicks off in Welkom at 15:00 on Friday afternoon, when the Cheetahs will want to bounce back from their first defeat of the season last weekend in Pretoria, in their Free State derby with neighbours NovaVit Griffons at the Down Touch Investments Stadium.

Two Premier Division matches take place on Saturday, with high flying Lions hosting the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV from 15h:00 in Johannesburg, before the action moves to Pretoria for a North-South derby between the Vodacom Bulls and Western Province, at 17:15.

To complete the fourth round action, the Pumas and Suzuki Griquas will also battle it out at 14:00 on Sunday in Nelspruit.

With both Free State teams suffering defeats last weekend – the Toyota Cheetahs away to the Vodacom Bulls and the NovaVit Griffons at home to DHL WP – both teams will be keen to grab victory when they clash in Welkom.

The Northern Free Staters are yet to open their account this season, and they will be desperate for an upset against their southern neighbours.

The action then moves to Johannesburg, where the Fidelity ADT Lions will be looking to build on their good early-season form against the struggling Hollywoodbets Sharks XV.

The hosts can rightly be regarded as favourites, but even though JP Pietersen’s visiting team have lost all three league games to date, they do have a quality side that will be desperate for a winning performance.

Bulls vs Western Province has main event written all over it

In Pretoria, the current form of the two teams will not matter, as the traditional North-South derby between arch-rivals, the Vodacom Bulls and DHL Western Province, undoubtedly delivers fireworks.

The hosts are riding high with three wins on the trot, while the Cape outfit bagged their first win last week in Welkom. The Vodacom Bulls have a settled-looking side, while DHL WP find themselves pretty much in a building phase, but it will nonetheless be a big clash with more than bragging rights at stake.

On Sunday, the action concludes with an undoubtedly exciting clash in Nelspruit between the Airlink Pumas and Suzuki Griquas, which kicks off at 14h00.

The Lowvelders recorded a brilliant victory last week in Durban when they raced to a 24-0 lead before going on to clinch a dramatic 31-24 away win. The Northern Cape team have made a slow and you can bet they will be up for this tussle in Nelspruit.

All the weekend action – including the First Division Final – will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

CONFIRMED: World Cup winning Springbok facing drug ban! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/confirmed-world-cup-winning-springbok-facing-drug-ban/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 05:04:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2146657 Another year, another drug ban looming for a Springbok after a positive test for banned substance was returned.

In the year where former Springbok winger Aphiwe Dyantyi made his long-awaited return from a four-year ban another is looming.

Springbok drug ban situation

Dyantyi was slapped with a four-year ban back in 2020. This after both his A and B samples returned traces of multiple banned substances. This was initially discovered in 2019 and it ruled the ex-Lions star out of a possible Rugby World Cup selection. This would’ve hit even harder for him, having just won World Rugby’s Newcomer Of the Year award for the 2018 season.

In the season that Dyantyi broke out for the Lions, he made his Springbok debut alongside Sbu Nkosi. The two speedster’s began Rassie Erasmus’ initial tenure as the first choice wingers. Nkosi, then of the Sharks went on to win the World Cup in Japan in 2019, but served as second fiddle to Cheslin Kolbe in the number 14 jersey. Since then, he has been in a downward spiral.

He was last in a Springbok jersey in 2021 and has since player for the Bulls and the Cheetahs. Things went left for Nkosi at the Bulls, with the winger going missing in 2022. He was then given another opportunity in 2023 but fell out of favour with director of Rugby Jake White. After a quiet period, he was then snapped up by the Free State side on a one-year Currie Cup contract. This for many, was last chance saloon for the 28-year-old.

Nkosi positive test confirmed

Now according to the latest reports from SA Rugby Magazine, citing AFP, the Cheetahs have confirmed Nkosi’s drug test failure!

“I can confirm reports that Sbu (Nkosi) underwent a World Rugby test in May and his A-sample was positive,” Said an anonymous Cheetahs official.

Nkosi and the Cheetahs now await the return of his B sample, which could determine what happens next. Should it also come back positive for the anabolic steroid, that would result in a four year ban!

Currie Cup wrap: Round three results https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-wrap-round-three-results/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 09:02:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2146090 The Bulls and Lions are the only two unbeaten teams left in the Currie Cup Premier Division following victories over the Cheetahs and Suzuki Griquas in round three.

DHL Western Province registered their first win of the season in Welkom, but the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV and NovaVit Griffons are still seeking for their first win following more heartache.

Lions work hard to win Currie Cup round three opener

In the first Premier Division match of the weekend, the Lions had to work hard for victory over this year’s SA Cup winners, Suzuki Griquas, in Johannesburg.

The hosts swung momentum their way by scoring 10 points in the final quarter, when two players from the visiting side were sent to the sin bin for yellow card infringements.

Flyhalf Sam Francis kicked one conversion and two penalty goals for the Highveld side, who were always in control of the game.

Bulls too strong for Cheetahs

The Bulls produced a solid performance to beat defending champions Cheetahs 25-13 later on Friday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, handing the Free Staters their first defeat of the season.

The men from Pretoria prevailed with three tries to one after leading 17-6 at the halftime break.

Right wing Henry Immelman grabbed two tries while pivot Chris Smith added two conversions and a penalty goal.

His Cheetahs counterpart, Ethan Wentzel, converted Daniel Maartens’ try while also adding two successful penalty goals, but in the end the visitors did not have enough to topple the Vodacom Bulls in the capital.

Sharks still winless

The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV are still searching for their first win in the Premier Division.

Coming into Friday evening’s game on the back of two losses, the Durban outfit came unstuck against a determined Airlink Pumas side, losing by 31-21, who hit back in style after last weekend’s big defeat at the hands of the Fidelity ADT Lions.

The KwaZulu-Natalians conceded 24 points in the first half without reply as the Lowvelders made a blistering start. Although the hosts fought back with 21 points in the second stanza – with flyhalf Tian Meyer on target with all three conversions – they could not breach the gap.

Inside centre Clinton Swart was perhaps the pick of the bunch for the Airlink Pumas as he added two conversions to his try, one of five scored by the visiting team.

WP studded by Roche hat-trick

In the last match of the round, played on Sunday afternoon in Welkom, Jonathan Roche scored a hat-trick of tries as a young DHL Western Province overpowered the NovaVit Griffons 64-15 for their first win of the campaign.

The Capetonians raced into a 33-10 half-time lead, and eventually registered 10 tries in a bonus-point victory, after two defeats in the opening stage of the Premier Division. Roche and wing Angelo Davids (two) were responsible for half of DHL WP’s tries, while fly half Jurie Matthee slotted seven conversations.

On Friday, the NovaVit Griffons take on the Toyota Cheetahs in a Free State derby in Welkom (15h00), and the Airlink Pumas host Suzuki Griquas in Nelspruit (19h00), and that will be followed by two encounters on Saturday.

First, the Fidelity ADT Lions host Hollywoodbets Sharks XV in Johannesburg (15h00) and later, the Vodacom Bulls face DHL WP in a North vs South derby in Pretoria (17h15).

Bulls call on herd to fill up Loftus for WP clash https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/bulls-call-herd-loftus-wp-clash/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 08:45:19 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2146059 The Vodacom Bulls are all systems go for round 4 of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup where they will host Cape outfit, the DHL Western Province.

The two old foes will meet on Saturday 27 July at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The Tshwane outfit has had a productive start to their 2024 campaign in the world’s oldest rugby competition. They sit second level on points (13) with Jukskei rivals, the Fidelity ADT Lions whom they will meet on the 30th of August.

Bulls keep on scoring

Nomlomo’s side has managed to breach their first three opponents’ defensive line fourteen times for 107 points of which 30 came from the opening round match against Province at Greenpoint.

The Vodacom Bulls mentor says they come into the week with confidence from their round 3 fixture against the defending champions but are under no illusion that it will be hard work.

“The Cheetahs are a classy and well-coached outfit, so it was never going to be an easy outing but I am chuffed at how we turned out and managed the game.

He also said: “We were good on defence with everyone putting their bodies on the line, all that credit must also go to Jean [Tiedt] who has been working hard with the lads,”

“We are in a good place as a club because we get the wins and still walk away feeling as though we could have done better. We have to applaud that attitude from our players.”

Hard work pays off for Bulls

Nomlomo adds that his side is working hard to perfect their game and calls on supporters to play their player-24 role against an old enemy.

“Our focus now is fully on Province and making sure that we prepare well for what will be a tough outing. I think because things went our way in round one, they will want to come here and try to upstage us but we will be ready and I hope our fans will be in the stands serving as our super player 24, giving us an added home ground advantage,”

“Looking at our overall campaign, we still have a couple of things to work on because we want to be more clinical in all aspects of our game because we are always evolving as a team and have that desire to become a ruthless outfit and this is another week where we can take a step towards that.”

The match will kick off at 17:00 with the stadium gates opening at 14:00 so that you and your family can come to enjoy all the entertainment that the Loftus Market has to offer you.

Tickets for the derby start from R 50 and are available only from Ticketpro.

Sharks name team to chase opening Currie Cup win https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/sharks-name-team-to-chase-opening-currie-cup-win/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 11:50:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2143879 The Hollywoodbets Sharks play their third match of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup on Friday when they host the Airlink Pumas at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

This game is vital for both teams as they chase Currie Cup glory. Both have had tough starts to their respective campaigns, but after only two rounds, it’s still a case of finding their feet. While the Pumas are a cohesive side, together for some time, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are still building, while the Springboks have been in and out of the team.

Sharks face tough Pumas

Champions in 2022 and runners-up last year, the Pumas will be hurting after last week’s 75-21 loss at home to the Fidelity ADT Lions, having won away in Kimberley against the Suzuki Griquas in the first round.

Similarly, the Hollywoodbets Sharks come into this match off the back of two narrow losses, knowing that a full 80 performance will be the foundation to victory after going down to Griquas after leading handsomely at half-time last Friday.

Hand is forced

Head coach JP Pietersen has had his hand forced this week for team selection as far as experienced personnel go, with his Springboks back with the national squad.

What this does translate to is more of the same for the bigger unions who use the Currie Cup competition as a breeding ground for youthful and exciting talent, and Pietersen’s team to take on the Pumas reflects the franchise’s investment into providing opportunities for the next generation of stars.

There is still some experience dotted amongst the forwards and backs to provide the calmness so important in the game, and they will guide the youngsters as they look to become permanent fixtures in the Black and White jersey in the years to come.

Friday evening’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 7pm.

Bulls name returning star in Currie Cup team https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/bulls-name-returning-star-in-currie-cup-team/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 11:04:45 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2143826 Henry Immelman returns to the starting xv whilst Abulele Ndabambi is set to make his senior Vodacom Bulls debut when the Tshwane outfit hosts the defending champions, the Toyota Cheetahs in round 3 of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup at Loftus Versfeld.

The two sides will meet on Friday 19 July at 17:00 and tickets start from R 50.00, available only from Ticketpro

Rteurning star plays for the Bulls

Immelman slots in at right wing with Stravino Jacobs retained on the left whilst Devon Williams completes the back three. Second-round player of the match, Chris Barend Smit is paired up with Aphiwe Dyantyi once again at inside and outside centre, respectively.

In front of the back line will be the halfback pairing of Bernard van der Linde at scrumhalf and Chris Smith – swaps places with Jaco van der Walt who moves to the impact squad – slots in at flyhalf.

Up ahead, head coach Phiwe Nomlomo has made minor rotational changes to his side with Dylan ‘Bull’ Smith lining up alongside Joe van Zyl and Francois Klopper at front row. Smith returns to the starting line-up after Jan-Hendrik Wessels’ call-up to the Springboks. Behind the three, Sintu Manjezi has a new lock partner in Jannes Kirsten who shifts roles in the absence of Cobus Wiese. Skipper, Nizaam ‘Nemo’ Carr partners up with Merwe Olivier at openside and blindside respectively. Celimpilo ‘Mpilo’ Gumede assumes the eighth man duties.

Juann Else, Alulutho Tshakweni, Khutha Mchunu, Nama Xaba, Zak Burger, Jaco van der Walt, Cornal Hendricks and debut hopeful, Ndabambi all make up the 5-3 split impact squad.

Consistency is key

Nomlomo says his side has had a good start and the focus is on maintaining consistency.

“Cobus [Wiese] is not available for us this week on family grounds and Boeta [Chamberlain] misses out because he was away the weekend before and the short turnaround just did not allow us to integrate him back.”

He adds: “It has been a good start for us and ours is to keep the consistency going forward. We need to keep our focus on the now and not get carried away, so we are all systems go for tomorrow against the Cheetahs and then move on from there,”

“They [Cheetahs] have been on a good run against us for a while now but tomorrow is not about revenge or anything but an opportunity for us to execute what we have been working on. Yes we take learnings from the past and the game in itself is very important, considering they are one of the unbeaten sides in the competition so we must look to be on top of our game” Nomlomo concludes.

Carling Currie Cup Premier Division results round two https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/carling-currie-cup-premier-division-results-round-two/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 12:51:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2141211 The defending Carling Currie Cup Premier Division champions, the Cheetahs, as well as the two sides from Gauteng, the Lions and Bulls, all managed to record their second successive victories of the season in round two.

Currie Cup Premier Division round two

The Free Staters increased their points tally to a “perfect 10” from two games with a 37-17 win over DHL Western Province in Bloemfontein on Saturday, but the Fidelity ADT Lions were the biggest winners of the round as they romped to a 75-21 triumph over the Airlink Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, Suzuki Griquas edged the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV by 34-31 in an exciting game in Kimberley, and Sunday’s match between the NovaVit Griffons and Vodacom Bulls ended in a comfortable 52-10 victory for the men from Pretoria.

Firstly, the round kicked off in Kimberley, where Suzuki Griquas fought back from a 24-7 halftime deficit to edge the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV by 34-31 in a clash that delivered 10 tries – five by each team. Lubabalo Dobela was also the hometown hero with a late penalty goal that handed the hosts their maiden win of the season.

In the Friday evening fixture, the Airlink Pumas were on the receiving end of some undoubtedly excellent attacking rugby by the Fidelity ADT Lions. The visitors led by 35-7 at the break and they pushed on in the second half, eventually sealing the deal by 75-21 for their second away victory of the season.

The Gautengers ran in 10 tries, while the men from the Lowveld could only reply with three five-pointers. Fidelity ADT Lions flyhalf Sam Francis made a personal contribution of 30 points via a try, eight conversions and three penalty goals, with Tapiwa Mafura scoring a hat-trick of tries.

Saturday heats up chilly SA

Later on Saturday, the Toyota Cheetahs proved too strong in the second half for a gallant DHL WP side in Bloemfontein, winning this encounter 37-17 after they were locked 10-10 at the interval.

The defending champions scored five tries, two of them going to livewire replacement hooker Vernon Paulo, while it was the Capetonians’ second successive defeat as they struggled to match the power of the Free Staters in the second half.

On Sunday, the Vodacom Bulls took revenge for their defeat in Welkom last year by scoring eight tries in the dry Northern Free State conditions to comfortably beat the NovaVit Griffons by 52-10.

Celimpilo Gumede, who was part of the Springbok training squad a few weeks ago, scored two of the Vodacom Bulls’ tries, while Jaco van der Walt and Chris Smith added three conversions each.

Springboks hopefuls get Bulls run in Welkom https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/springboks-hopefuls-get-bulls-run-in-welkom/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 12:25:28 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2139988 The Bulls have named their side to face the Griffons in Welkom in Currie Cup Premier Division action.

Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Stravino Jacobs have both been handed starts whilst new recruit, Nama Xaba is set to make his franchise debut in round 2 of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup in Welkom.

Bulls tweak team after opening win

Head coach Phiwe Nomlomo has made minor adjustments to his side with one injury-enforced and other positional changes ahead of the NovaVit Griffons clash on Sunday 14 July. Nomlomo has called up Wessels, Xaba, Jacobs and Jacques ‘Policieman’ van Rooyen into the matchday 23. These changes see Celimpilo Gumede in the starting XV with skipper, Nizaam Carr changing positions.

Wessels starts at prop alongside Joe van Zyl (hooker) and Francois Klopper who all form the front row. Behind the trio will be new lock pairing of Sintu Manjezi and Cobus Wiese who was named Player of the Match in round 1. Carr shifts to flank alongside Jannes Kirsten and Gumede slots in at eight.

Nomlomo says Wessels is a versatile asset to the team with the ability to start at prop and finish at hooker.

“Jan-Hendrik returns from the Boks to start at loosehead this weekend, he is a very versatile player who can play in both positions. We have been wanting to see him run for us and later in the game he can shift, so just because he starts at prop doesn’t mean he can’t switch to hooker later in the game,”

“I hope that he has a good game and is in the running for the next test.”

At the back, Stravino Jacobs is the only change ahead of round two, coming in place of Boeta Chamberlain who is on family leave. Jacobs starts at left wing which sees Devon Williams shifting to fullback whilst Sergeal Petersen is retained on the right side of the park with Chris Barend Smit and Aphiwe Dyantyi partnering up at centre.

“It is good to see Stravino getting a run at wing with Boeta [Chamberlain] getting married this weekend. We wish him and his wife well for the future! We also get to see Jacque forming part of the impact squad and he covers both 1 and 3.”

5-3 split on the bench

Nomlomo has opted for a five-three split impact squad which will feature Xaba, van Rooyen, Dylan Smith, Khutha Mchunu, Merwe Olivier, Zak Burger, Chris Smith and Cornal Hendricks.

“We will not take them [Griffons] lightly, at home, we know exactly what we have to do and they will be confident too considering how the fixture turned out for them last season. They will be tough and if anything, they are the ones who will be feeling overly confident even though they didn’t go well last week,”

“We are quite chuffed to see Nama go this weekend. I am not sure a lot of people know his leadership qualities off the field, he doesn’t just bring skills on the floor but it is also what he does in the changeroom. He will be good for our environment” Phiwe concludes.

Currie Cup TV guide: How to watch the action https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-tv-guide-how-to-watch-the-action/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 09:45:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2138571 The second round of the Currie Cup premier division hits our screens this weekend.

How to watch the Currie Cup

Suzuki Griquas play at home in Kimberley for a second week in a row, this time against the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV, in an exciting match kicking off at 15:00 on Friday. Airlink Pumas host the Fidelity ADT Lions, also on Friday, from 19:00.

In Saturday’s only encounter, the defending champions Toyota Cheetahs welcome DHL Western Province to Bloemfontein, with the Free Staters favoured to register their second win in a row after last weekend’s romp over the NovaVit Griffons. The game is scheduled to start at 13:55.

Sunday’s 14:00 clash between the NovaVit Griffons and Vodacom Bulls at the Down Touch Investments Stadium in Welkom wraps up the weekend’s action.

Suzuki Griquas went down to the Airlink Pumas in last weekend’s opening round clash in Kimberley, and the men from the Diamond City will fancy their chances against a youthful looking Hollywoodbets Sharks XV.

Kimberley is a difficult spot for any visiting team and the Durbanites will also have to cope with the home side’s controlled aggression as the recently crowned SA Cup champions seek to get their first win.

While the Airlink Pumas gained a deserving victory in Kimberley, the Fidelity ADT Lions had to work extremely hard for their one-point triumph in Durban and an exciting game is on the cards between the two attack-minded sides at the Mbombela Stadium.

Judging on last weekend’s results, the Toyota Cheetahs should have too much firepower for a young DHL WP outfit. The men from Bloemfontein swept aside their neighbours from the Northern Free State last weekend and the Capetonians will have to show a lot of improvement from their loss to the Vodacom Bulls, if they want to succeed away from home.

In the last match up of the weekend, the Vodacom Bulls are favoured over home side the NovaVit Griffons in Welkom. Success in this fixture will keep the Pretoria outfit amongst the front runners on the log, while the purple jerseys are seeking their first league points.

Cheetahs scoring freely

Although it’s very early days, it’s no surprise Toyota Cheetahs dominate proceedings on the leading scorers list.

Ethan Wentzel heads the list with 19 points following his seven conversions and a try in the opening round. Fidelity ADT Lions flyhalf Kade Wolhuter is just three points behind on 16, while Airlink Pumas playmaker Clinton Swart is on 14 points.

Three Toyota Cheetahs players, namely Gideon van der Merwe, Daniel Kasende and Jandre Nel, as well as the Suzuki Griquas’ Mnombo Zwelendaba, have scored two tries each.

All the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division action will be broadcast live on Supersport.

World Cup-winning Springbok to make Sharks Currie Cup debut https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/world-cup-winning-springbok-to-make-sharks-currie-cup-debut/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 07:21:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2138369 The Hollywoodbets Sharks take to the road in this weekend’s Currie Cup when they face off against the Suzuki Griquas in Kimberley on Friday evening in a tricky round two clash.

Many a team has come undone in Kimberley and for JP Pietersen’s side, there will be no underestimating the magnitude of the challenge that lies ahead.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks team has been bolstered by the inclusion of returning players from the URC and Challenge Cup campaign, the Springbok camp, as well as the return of a former favourite and a definite fan-favourite who makes his debut in the Black & White jersey.

With six Springboks in the side, there is plenty to excite the fans.

Springboks in the mix

Springbok tighthead prop Trevor Nyakane will play in his first match for the Hollywoodbets Sharks on Friday since being signed, replacing Khwezi Mona, while another Springbok, Ntuthuko Mchunu takes over from Abraham Reynecke at loosehead.

Phepsi Buthelezi replacing Jannes Potgieter at flank is the final change amongst the forwards.

Rugby World Cup winning wing Makazole Mapimpi is back for the impressive Jaco Williams who debuted last week, while Andre Esterhuizen, back in Durban after a successful stint in the English Premiership, partners Muller du Plessis in the midfield, with Murray Koster named on the bench.

The final change sees another Springbok boosting his team’s chances in Kimberley, fullback Aphelele Fassi is back, replacing Hakeem Kunene.

“We took a lot of positives out of last week’s game, but we were disappointed as we felt we could have won that game,” head coach JP Pietersen explains.

“But that’s all part of the learning, lots of youngsters put their hands up which is a massive positive for the union and shows we’re moving in the right direction with this young talent.”
With Griquas having lost to the Pumas at home last weekend (24-44), Pietersen expects a backlash from their hosts.

“They’ll definitely want to bounce back, they’ve had a good year and they’re a confident team, and as a group, we know this is going to be a physical battle in Kimberley, but it’s an exciting challenge for us and we’re also confident going into this match.

“We hope it’s a good game of rugby that the fans can enjoy.”

Currie Cup Premier Division round one wrap https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-premier-division-round-one-wrap/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 09:32:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2135948 The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division got off to a cracking start with a statement victory for the defending champions, the Toyota Cheetahs, while the Airlink Pumas, Fidelity ADT Lions and Vodacom Bulls all made a positive starts on the road.

Firstly, Airlink Pumas kicked off their 2024 campaign with a convincing 44-24 win over Suzuki Griquas to gain revenge for their recent SA Cup final loss at the same venue in Kimberley.

Secondly, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV and Fidelity ADT Lions dished up a thriller in Durban, with the Gauteng side emerging as winners by a single point, 26-25, to break the hearts of the home supporters.

Saturday saw the action move to Bloemfontein and a runaway 82-20 triumph for the Toyota Cheetahs in their Free State derby with the NovaVit Griffons, and the opening round concluded on Sunday in drenching rain in Cape Town, where the Vodacom Bulls prevailed by 30-25 in a North-South derby over DHL Western Province.

The action continues from Friday until Sunday, with four more matches scheduled: Suzuki Griquas vs Hollywoodbets Sharks XV; Airlink Pumas vs Fidelity ADT Lions; Toyota Cheetahs vs DHL WP; and NovaVit Griffons vs Vodacom Bulls.

Firstly, a rejuvenated Airlink Pumas outfit proved too strong for Suzuki Griquas as the team from Mpumalanga ran out winners 44-24 in Kimberley on Friday afternoon.

The visiting side had their noses in front by 25-12 at halftime and were always in control of the game, outscoring their hosts by six tries to four and once they got their noses in front, they never surrendered the lead in the Diamond City.

Each of the Airlink Pumas’ six tries were scored by a different player, while flyhalf Clinton Swart kept the scoreboard ticking over with four conversions and two penalty goals.

Scorers:

Suzuki Griquas 24 (12) – Tries: Mnombo Zwelendaba (2), Cameron Hufke, Bobby Alexander. Conversions: George Whitehead, Lubabalo Dobela.

Airlink Pumas 44 (25) – Tries: Etienne Janeke, Eddie Swart, Ruwald van der Merwe, Ross Braude, Dean Ackermann, Stefan Coetzee. Conversions: Clinton Swart (4). Penalty goals: Swart (2).

Nick Hatton is stopped in his tracks by the Fidelity ADT Lions defence.

Fidelity ADT Lions grab the points in Currie Cup thriller

Secondly, the Fidelity ADT Lions broke the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV’s hearts with a nail-biting 26-25 win in Durban on Friday evening.

Unconverted tries by wing Jaco Williams and second rower Coetzee Le Roux gave the KwaZulu-Natalians a 10-8 halftime advantage, but the Highvelders staged a brave fightback in the second stanza during which time Jarod Cairns (loose forward) and Morne Brandon (replacement hooker) scored to help them claw their way into the lead.

Skipper Nick Hatton found a gap in the visitors’ defence to score in the last minute, but experienced flyhalf Lionel Cronje missed the conversion, which saw the Fidelity ADT Lions leave Durban with the spoils.

Scorers:

Hollywoodbets Sharks XV 25 (10) – Tries: Coetzee Le Roux, Nick Hatton, Jaco Williams, Diego Appollis. Conversion: Lionel Cronje. Penalty goal: Cronje.

Fidelity ADT Lions 26 (8) – Tries: Kade Wolhuter, Jarod Cairns, Morne Brandon. Conversion: Wolhuter. Penalty goals: Wolhuter (3).

Toyota Cheetahs open Currie Cup title defence with runaway home win

The Toyota Cheetahs were also too powerful for their Free State neighbours, the NovaVit Griffons, in Bloemfontein on Saturday, recording a massive 82-20 victory.

The home team clearly outscored their inexperienced Northern Free State rivals, who lost a number of players after the SA Cup, by 12 tries to two. Already up by 28-13 at the break, the Toyota Cheetahs cut loose in the second half to romp to a comfortable win.

Gideon van der Merwe, Daniel Kasende and Jandre Nel all grabbed two tries each for the impressive Toyota Cheetahs, with Ethan Wentzel (six) and George Lourens (three) also adding the conversions off the kicking tee.

Scorers:

Toyota Cheetahs 82 (28) – Tries: Gideon van der Merwe (2), Daniel Kasende (2), Jandre Nel (2), Sbu Nkosi, Ethan Wentzel, Litha Nkula, Jeandre Rudolph, Neels Volschenk, Penalty try. Conversions: Wentzel (7), George Lourens (3).

NovaVit Griffons 20 (13) – Tries: Gurswin Wehr, Penalty try. Conversion: Andrew Kota. Penalty goals: Kota (2).

Sbu Nkosi scored a try for his new province, the Toyota Cheetahs, in their big win on Saturday.

Vodacom Bulls reign supreme in cold and wet Cape Town

The Vodacom Bulls had the upper hand in Cape Town on Sunday, and after holding a 13-5 advantage at halftime, they went on to two score twice after the break and hold off a spirited fightback from DHL WP for their 30-25 win.

Firstly, the game was played in ice cold weather and torrential rain at the DHL Stadium.

Vodacom Bulls hooker Joe van Zyl went over early, Jaco van der Walt added the extras and also succeeded with two penalty goals, while DHL WP’s Jean-Luc du Plessis scored their only try in the opening spell.

After the break, Nizaam Carr’s Vodacom Bulls continued with their dominance as Devon Williams and replacement Mpilo Gumede also went over for tries.

DHL WP finished with a flourish of tries through Angelo Davids and Wandisile Simelane which secured them two losing bonus points, but by then the team from Pretoria had done enough to secure the win.

Scorers:

DHL Western Province 25 (5) – Tries: Jean-Luc du Plessis, Gary Porter, Angelo Davids, Wandisile Simelane. Conversion: Du Plessis. Penalty goal: Jurie Matthee.

Vodacom Bulls 30 (13) – Tries: Joe van Zyl, Devon Williams, Mpilo Gumede. Conversions: Chris Smith (2), Jaco van der Walt. Penalty goals: Van der Walt (3).

“Five of the six players making their debut are experienced players, with just Vernon Matongo having recently graduated from the junior ranks. We also have a player like Labib Kannemeyer back in the team after some excellent form for his club SK Walmers.

“We are really excited to see what these combinations can do and we are well-aware that we will need to hit the ground running against a strong and well-prepared Vodacom Bulls side.

“It is fantastic to start our season at DHL Stadium and the players cannot wait to get out there in front of our fans again.

“There are a number of players who are really hungry to perform, so this will be a great opportunity for them to show our supporters what they can do,” he said.

The first weekend of the Currie Cup sees all eight teams in action.

Bulls chomping at the bit

Head coach, Phiwe Nomlomo says the side has been planning for months and the start of the campaign is exciting for all.

“We have prepared hard for this competition, and we all understand what is expected from every one of us.

He also said: “We are just excited to get going,”

“We have been bolstered by the arrival of the recruits, who have come on and worked hard to understand our systems and fit in what we are looking for. I imagine the energy is going to be even better when we get the guys who are currently injured, returning to play,”

Nomlomo adds: “It is a good place to be and we look forward to having South Africans turn out to support the oldest going rugby competition.”

A physical juggernaut

The herd will see a forward row comprising Dylan Smith at loose-head prop, Jope van Zyl – who returns to play after a long injury layoff, starts at hooker and Francois Klopper is at tight-head prop. Pieter Bergh names Suzuki Griquas team for Currie Cup opener https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/pieter-bergh-names-suzuki-griquas-team-currie-cup-opener/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 11:05:34 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2133931 Coach Pieter Bergh has named his first Suzuki Griquas team of the Currie Cup campaign ahead of Friday’s opening match against the Pumas in Kimberley.

Bergh looks to the experience of George Whitehead at flyhalf to run what is otherwise quite a young backline.

The first weekend of the Currie Cup sees all eight teams in action.

Pieter Bergh names Suzuki Griquas team

The centre pairing is made up of a pair of exciting 24-year-old talents Mnombo Zwelendaba, recently brought in from Western Province, and former Tuks Varsity Cup star Sango Xamlashe.

Griquas will be a dangerous side on the counterattack with fullback Cameron Hufke an inspired ball carrier and creative force.

They also have pace on the wings with former Western Province Craven week star Marqiewn Titus set to play his first Currie Cup Premier Division match. Sevens star Sako Makata is on the other wing and brings a full back of tricks to the position.

WP players making their way North

Western Province players Leon Lyons (Prop) and Thomas Bursey, moved up to Kimberley last December and will also be making their Currie Cup debuts for Griquas.

Griquas can still count on the skills of experienced loose forward Hanru Sirgel but will likely hope he manages to stay out of the sin-bin. Sirgel is quite the talent but he can’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Sirgel will have to marshall the younger loose forwards with former Bulls Academy player Marco de Witt and his former teammate Stephan Smit completing the starting loose trio.

Griquas also have experience at hooker where Janco Uys starts for the Northern Cape side. He will be tasked with finding some less experienced jumpers but has enjoyed some time to work with Albert Liebenberg and the unit that is Dylan Sjoblom.

Uys packs down in a front row between Lyons and Griquas stalwart Janu Botha.

Versatile sevens star Lubabalo Dobela provides Griquas with backline cover from the bench alongside outside back Tertius Kruger and scrumhalf Bobby Alexander.

Carl Els is on the bench to offer a loose forward option while Athenkosi Khetani offers cover at lock but can also be used as a flank.

Gustav du Rand, Eddie Davids and Cebo Dlamini make up the backup front row.

JP Pietersen names first Sharks Currie Cup team https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/jp-pietersen-names-first-sharks-currie-cup-team/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 09:59:22 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2133771 The Sharks will look to get their 2024 Carling Currie Cup campaign off to a winning start when they host the Fidelity ADT Lions at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Friday evening.

The first weekend of the Currie Cup sees all eight teams in action. Durban will see the second match on Friday with the Currie Cup kicking off between Griquas and the Pumas

Sharks Currie Cup team named by new coach JP Pietersen

This year’s Premier Division tournament sees eight teams competing, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV joined by 2023 champions Toyota Free State, the Vodacom Blue Bulls, DHL Western Province, Fidelity ADT Lions, Suzuki Griquas, Airlink Pumas and Novavit Griffons.

Former Sharks and Springbok star JP Pietersen has been named head coach for this season’s tournament which extends into September, naming eighthman Nic Hatton as his captain for the opening round.

Internationals off limits

Missing a number of Springboks in the squad ahead of the international season, Pietersen has balanced regular faces with an exciting group of young players he has coached at junior level over the last couple of years and who are now given the opportunity to make the step up into the senior ranks.

There has been a lull in rugby action recently after the conclusion of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and the title-winning Heineken Challenge Cup, but the team is excited to get stuck into this tournament, one that the South African rugby fraternity holds dear to their hearts, and there is a commitment to do the tournament and the franchise proud in 2024.

There is an immensely rich history seated in the Currie Cup, with the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV boasting a proud list of achievements since that historic first title in 1990, followed by a number of further trophies won in the ensuing years.

Friday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park is scheduled for a 5.15pm kick-off.

Currie Cup kicks off this weekend: Rugby TV Guide https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-weekend-rugby-tv-guide/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 12:18:56 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2133054 International rugby returns with a bang this weekend with a full programme but Currie Cup action will also be on our screens in a real festival of rugby.

The Currie Cup Premier Division gets underway on Friday 5 July.

Currie Cup action on TV this weekend

On Friday afternoon the beaten finalists from last season, the Pumas, travel to Kimberley to take on Griquas from 15:00.

Later in the evening, the Sharks host the Lions at Kings Park with kick-off scheduled for 17:15.

On Friday there are also international matches between Samoa and Italy as well as Georgia hosting Fiji.

Saturday

Aside from the full programme of internationals on Saturday there will also be one Currie Cup match in the mix.

It is a Free State derby as the Cheetahs host the Griffons in Bloemfontein in a match that kicks off at 13:30.

Of course, there are huge international matches on Saturday with New Zealand hosting England, Australia taking on Wales and the Springboks in battle against Ireland.

Sunday

On Sunday the Currie Cup’s opening weekend rounds off with a clash between the two most successful teams in the history of the competition.

Western Province will face the Bulls at the Cape Town Stadium from 15:00.

Former Western Province stalwart Nizaam Carr has been named as the Bulls skipper for the Currie Cup.

Carr-led Bulls in action on Sunday

Head coach Phiwe Nomlomo says ‘Nemo’ strikes the perfect balance between the young and the more experienced players in the group.

“When you look at the mixture of the squad, we have youth mixed with some experienced players and Nemo becomes the all-important cog for us because he can relate to both sides of the age groups. When you look at the mixture of our leadership group, Nizaam also brings a measured balance there as well and I am sure that they will collectively share the responsibilities over the next few weeks,” Nomlomo said.

“He is also a player that offers us seasoned experience having played in top competitions locally and abroad, which I am confident has given him plenty of lessons that will enable him to lead us for this campaign.”

All Currie Cup Premier Division matches will be broadcast on Supersport.

Currie Cup: EVERY winner in the tournament’s history https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-every-winner-in-the-tournaments-history-result-breaking-june-2023/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 10:53:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1656759 Steeped in history and tradition, the Currie Cup dates back to 1891 and remains the most prestigious prize in South African domestic rugby.

The Currie Cup is among the oldest rugby competitions in the world with the first matches played in 1889, but it was only in 1892 that it became officially known as the Currie Cup.

The competition had its humble beginnings as an inter-province competition in 1884, but when the South African Rugby Board was founded in 1889 it decided to organise a national competition that would involve representative teams from all the major unions.

The original participating unions were Western Province, Griqualand West, Transvaal and Eastern Province. The first tournament was held in Kimberley and was won by Western Province.

As a prize they received a silver cup donated by the South African Rugby Board.

The story of how the Currie Cup came to be comes from the first overseas rugby team to tour South Africa in 1891, The British Isles, who carried with them a particularly precious bit of cargo.

Among the bags, boots and balls was a golden cup given to them by Sir Donald Currie, owner of Union-Castle Lines, the shipping company that transported them to Mzansi.

Sir Donald Currie was clear with his instructions – hand the trophy to the team in South Africa that gives the best game; and after a spirited display where the unbeaten British Lions narrowly won 3-0, Griqualand West became the first ever holders of the Currie Cup.

They then handed the trophy over to the South African Rugby Board and it became the floating trophy for the Currie Cup competition.

The inaugural Currie Cup tournament was thus held in 1892 with Western Province earning the honour of holding it aloft as the first official winners.

Fast forward 132 years and the 2024 edition kicks off this weekend.

The iconic jerseys that help make the Currie Cup so special https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/the-iconic-jerseys-that-help-make-the-currie-cup-so-special-pictures/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 14:27:03 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=961959 The Currie Cup is a tournament steeped in history and rich in iconography.

Some of the Currie Cup’s stalwarts have undergone major rebranding in the professional era, although these new identities are generally strongly linked to historical roots in the cases of the Bulls and the Lions.

Natal Rugby deliberately underwent a rebranding in the mid-1990s, becoming the Sharks while Free State adopted the moniker of the Cheetahs more organically, but both sides remained true to their unions roots in the design of their jerseys.

Even the Pumas distinctive pink kit draws inspiration from a bygone era and after toying with funky designs for a brief spell, Griquas have also returned to their roots in their Peacock Blue and white striped shirts.

Currie Cup, domestic rugby set for ‘major revamp’ https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/currie-cup-domestic-rugby-set-major-revamp-breaking-08-december-2023/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1910890 The Currie Cup Premier and First Divisions will be moved to a new window next year, to avoid clashing with European competitions, following feedback from member unions, broadcast, and commercial partners.

As a result, the Currie Cup competitions – to be contested in 2024 by the same eight Premier Division teams and six First Division sides from this year – will be played from July to the end of September. The qualification process will also change from 2025 to provide more opportunity for all member unions to contest South Africa’s premier competition.

The Premier and First Divisions will be preceded by a local competition featuring 10 provincial sides (Toyota Cheetahs, Windhoek Draught Griquas, Airlink Pumas, NovaVit Griffons, Boland Kavaliers, Border Bulldogs, SWD Eagles, Eastern Province, Valke and Leopards), but will exclude the four Vodacom United Rugby Championship franchises (Vodacom Bulls, Emirates Lions, Hollywoodbets Sharks and DHL Stormers).

This “SA Cup” (working title) competition, which will kick off the senior local calendar next year, is scheduled to be played over a single round from March to June, with semi-finals and a final determining the winner. Players will then enjoy a break before the Currie Cup starts.

In 2025, the top four teams from the “SA Cup” competition will join the four Vodacom URC franchises in the Currie Cup Premier Division, with the remaining six teams contesting the First Division. Both competitions will culminate in semi-finals and a final.

And in another major boost for the local game, SuperSport have committed to broadcast all the matches, either through their linear offering on DStv or on their various streaming platforms.

BOMBSHELL: Springboks to play All Blacks in Cape Town in 2024?

Key notes as Currie Cup gets a makeover

 • Currie Cup to be played from July to September
 • New qualification competition introduced from 2025
 • All provinces given shot at Premier Division status
 • Free State promoted to Women’s Premier Division

Other decisions

It’s also worth noting there will be a re-introduction of a single round competition for U19 teams, and a double-round competition for U21s (Cup and Shield), while the U20 competition will be discontinued. The time frame for the U19 and U21 competitions will be confirmed in due course.

Furthermore, the dates and structure of the two women’s provincial competitions (Premier and First Division) will be similar to the 2023 season, while the Free State Women’s side – winners of the First Division – were promoted to the Premier Division for the next two years.

CHANGE IS GOOD FOR CURRIE CUP

“I think it’s fair to say that the changes to the rugby calendar over the last few years have necessitated a change in approach to the Currie Cup, which we still consider to be the pinnacle of the local calendar,” said Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby.

“We spent many hours consulting with all relevant stakeholders, our broadcast partner and possible sponsors, and the message was clear – we need the Currie Cup to have its own window in the calendar.

“This will not only make it easier for our provincial unions when it comes to planning and contracting, but it will also be better for the broadcaster, potential sponsor and supporters.

“We believe this change in the way we approach the Currie Cup will provide it with an opportunity to reclaim its rightful place as the jewel in the local rugby crown. To win the Currie Cup remains a massive achievement – ask any of the Cheetahs or Pumas players who have lifted the trophy in the last two years – and we have to ensure it’s as competitive as possible.”

“By giving all the teams an opportunity to qualify for the Currie Cup Premier Division from 2025 onwards, we’ll also make it more appealing for sponsors at provincial level, especially as all their matches will be broadcast.”

Fourie lauded his ability to still impact the game after so many years in elite rugby.

“When we played Pro14 rugby, some of the overseas media asked about his BMT and his involvement in the game and that was three years ago,” Fourie said.

“He’s still going and probably is the hardest worker in our team at that age, which is why he can still play high-quality rugby.

“He’s an unbelievable person, rugby player, and father for his kids as well. It’s a privilege to have the experience and quality of Ruan in our squad.”

Half back pairing comes together

Pienaar’s shift back to ten has allowed another Cheetahs Currie Cup hero Rewan Kruger to come to the fore.

“He’s quick to the breakdown and his passing was good while his kicking game is picking up,” Fourie said of Kruger.

“He’s got a lot of confidence playing with Ruan and he’s a hard worker.

Fourie added: “He’s here every afternoon and stays after every session where he practices his box kicks and passes.

“He’s a guy that serves the team and if anyone wants to do something, Rewan will be the guy that either passes or kicks to them.

“He’s a true Cheetah man that I’ve watched since his school days, and I thought his career was going downwards.

“Since we pulled him into the Toyota Challenge two years ago, he’s never looked back.”

It is unclear if he would be open to it but Ruan Pienaar just might be able to do a job for the Springboks as a utility back if he can be coaxed out of retirement on the evidence of the Currie Cup run.

CURRIE CUP FINAL MATCH RECAP:

For the sixth time in the past 18 years (and seventh overall) the Currie Cup was orange-flavoured as the Cheetahs set off ecstatic celebrations in Bloemfontein with a measured 25-17 (halftime 18-11) final victory over the Pumas.

The Cheetahs deserved their title – their first since 2019 – and although the magnificent Pumas once again demonstrated their intensity and resilience, Hawies Fourie’s team always had the answers and never seemed to be taken entirely out of their comfort zone.

It was close throughout however and had the entranced Toyota Stadium crowd of 33 804 often on the edge of its proverbial seat, but there was to be no repeat of the defending champions’ eyebrow-raising 61-21 Currie Cup victory at this same ground in March.

Instead, the power of the Cheetahs pack at the set phase, the steady boot and direction of veteran flyhalf Ruan Pienaar, and hungry defence in front of their own fans saw them deliver a Currie Cup champion’s worthy performance.

The moment the new champions put one hand on the 132-year-old trophy probably came two minutes before the break with the Cheetahs’ second try. They were never headed in the match but at that point they opened a seven-point lead for the first time and although the visitors were to close the gap to just one during the second half, the Cheetahs always had control. And the party began to ratchet up as the final whistle sent the crowd into raptures.

Match report

For the sixth time in the past 18 years (and seventh overall) the Currie Cup was orange-flavoured as the Cheetahs set off ecstatic celebrations in Bloemfontein with a measured 25-17 (halftime 18-11) final victory over the Pumas.

The Cheetahs deserved their title – their first since 2019 – and although the magnificent Pumas once again demonstrated their intensity and resilience, Hawies Fourie’s team always had the answers and never seemed to be taken entirely out of their comfort zone.

It was close throughout however and had the entranced Toyota Stadium crowd of 33 804 often on the edge of its proverbial seat, but there was to be no repeat of the defending champions’ eyebrow-raising 61-21 victory at this same ground in March.

Instead, the power of the Cheetahs pack at the set phase, the steady boot and direction of veteran flyhalf Ruan Pienaar, and hungry defence in front of their own fans saw them deliver a champion’s performance.

The moment the new champions put one hand on the 132-year-old trophy probably came two minutes before the break with the Cheetahs’ second try. They were never headed in the match but at that point they opened a seven-point lead for the first time and although the visitors were to close to just one during the second half, the Cheetahs always had control.

Up until that point Pienaar and Pumas flyhalf Tinus de Beer had exchanged two penalty goals apiece and each team had scored a solitary try to leave the scores level at 11-11. Reinhardt Fortuin (centre) got the hosts’ first from no more than a metre when he stretched out to ground after a succession of pick-and-go’s after 30 minutes.

The never-say-die Airlink Pumas hit back four minutes later with a skillful score from centre Ali Mgijima who took a scoring pass at close range from right wing Andrew Qamani Kota, collecting a De Beer kick-pass and immediately offloading to his overlapping colleague.

But the breakthrough moment came just before half time. That Cheetahs pack power allowed them to rumble a driven lineout maul for 20 metres to just short of the goal-line. The pick-and-go option was ignored however, and the ball was swung quickly to the left where wing Cohen Jasper dived in joyously for a crucial score wide out. Pienaar, who had missed an early conversion from the same place, was on target the second time.

De Beer hit back with his third and fourth penalty goals at the start of the new half, but the hosts edged themselves two scores ahead with a third try – sweetly converted from the touchline by Pienaar – after 52 minutes. Scrumhalf Rewan Kruger darted in from five metres in the left-hand corner after the ball popped unexpectedly loose from a driving maul.

There were thrills and spills from there to the final whistle with the clearest winner being the Cheetahs’ defence which repeatedly confounded attacking positions of the visitors, either by wining the turnover or forcing the error.

De Beer missed the chance to add a fifth penalty with four minutes to go to close the gap to a single score as the party began to ratchet up as the final whistle sent the crowd into raptures.

It was Cheetahs’ first major title since the 2019 season, built on a masterful kicking game by Pienaar and dogged defending from the whole team.

It’s fitting that Ruan Pienaar emerged as the Cheteahs’ match-winner from a clash in which the opposition pushed them to their limit.

The 39-year-old has been the driving force behind the Cheetahs’ excellent campaign and he proved to be the difference again with a close-to-perfect kicking display for an all-important 10-point haul.

The Pumas had their opportunities, especially in the second half when they appeared to have Cheetahs on the ropes, but the defending champions could not land the all-important knockout blow and it came back to bite them.

CURRIE CUP FINAL RECAP:

The first half was a war of attrition, with both teams working out a seemingly perfect formula to create opportunities in favourable positions on the field, while the educated boots of Pienaar and Tinus de Beer kept the scoreboard ticking over for either side.

This came after the hosts had made a bright start, knocking the visitors backwards and forcing them into risky plays from their own half. That led to the opening penalty, which Pienaar slotted effortlessly.

That was the start of goal-kicking contest between the two flyhalves, as they successfully traded four attempts off the tee for an even six-all scoreline.

While it had been a lively contest up to that stage, the first tries of the game came well into the last 10 minutes of the half, when the Cheetahs outscored their visitors two touchdowns to one for a slender 18-11 advantage at the break.

The pressure went up a notch in a second half where defence was the of the day. And unfortunately for the Pumas, they were the ones who caved when the occasion demanded that they stood firm.

De Beer added two penalties at the start of the half to close the gap to a single point, but that was as good as it got for the men from Mbombela.

The Cheetahs would add one more converted try to their tally, through Rewan Kruger, and that would ultimately be enough to get them to the promised land. The final quarter of the game was mostly the Pumas trying to play catch-up.

But when push came to shove, they lacked the accuracy to make the most of their momentum and failed in that quest because they wasted several clear-cut scoring opportunities.

Starting fast and defending heroically, the Boland outscored the newly-crowned Mzansi Challenge champions by five tries to three to deny them a historic double and soar to First Division glory, taking the title for the first time in 12 years after they beat Eastern Province in Wellington.

MATCH RECAP: Boland clip Valke’s wings

Franzel September’s Boland side came out firing and spread the ball early, finding plenty of space and holes in the visitors’ defence in perfect conditions to race into a 15-0 lead. They were more clinical early on, bossed the breakdown, dominated at scrum time and put in some massive hits on defence.

The Valke, though, didn’t lay down and while Boland kept the scoreboard ticking, they were reduced to 14 men for reaped infringements in the dying moments of the first half, which saw the visitors score a second try to trail 28-14 at the break.

Hufke looked to have set the tone for the second half as he did in the first when he scored his second try inside three minutes, however, the spirited Valke did most of the playing and scored another while impressive No 8 Keenan Opperman was still in the bin to make it 33-21.

The Kavaliers weathered a storm as JP Immelman’s charges came on strong, staying organised and ultra-committed on defence with captain Thurlow Marsh coming up clutch with a crucial lineout steal on his 5m line, and Hufke’s third try of the afternoon in the 69th minute wrapped up the game and the title for the hosts.

Cheetahs vs Pumas Currie Cup final preview

Last term the Pumas pulled off a sensational win over Griquas in Kimberley to clam their first Currie Cup title.

The Cheetahs are out to claim their fifth Currie Cup win as Bloemfontein hosts the final for the ninth time.

The weather is expected to be perfect for rugby with conditions expected to be warm, still and clear.

What they said

Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse said that matching the Cheetahs physicality was key for them.

“Anything can happen in a Final,” Stonehouse said.

“If things go according to plan, our discipline is spot on and [flyhalf] Tinus de Beer is on target with his goalkicking, we be in the winners’ circle again.

“We must go do what we have done all season, just do it better.

“We also need to match the Cheetahs in terms of guts and physicality.”

Cheetahs coach Hawies Fourie has the Pumas well-scouted but that will count for little if the Pumas cannot best the visitors in execution.

“They have a very good offload game, they counterattack very well, a very good kicking game with Devon [Williams] and Tinus [de Beer] – left- and right-footed kickers – that make it difficult,” Fourie said.

He added: “They also have a strong and physical pack of forwards.

“They bring different things to the game and we expected them to be as physical as we know they can be.

“They will put a lot of pressure on us with their kicking game, the kick-chase and at the breakdown.”
