Girona keep La Liga lead, Madrid and Barca triumph https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/la-liga/girona-keep-la-liga-lead-madrid-and-barca-triumph/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 13:30:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1962340 Artem Dovbyk struck a hat-trick inside seven minutes as minnows Girona powered back to the top of La Liga with a thumping 5-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday.

After Real Madrid scraped a controversial 3-2 win over bottom side Almeria and a treble by Ferran Torres helped Barca win 4-2 at Real Betis, Girona demonstrated their title credentials.

The Catalan club, in the top flight for only the fourth season in their history, are shock challengers for the Spanish title and lead second-place Madrid by a point, having played one extra game.

Madrid’s victory over winless Almeria, which took them temporarily top before Girona played, was steeped in drama and controversy.

Dani Carvajal rammed home the winner in the 99th minute to settle a wild and hugely entertaining clash at the Santiago Bernabeu where Madrid had trailed 2-0.

Almeria took a two-goal lead through Largie Ramazani’s 38th minute strike and a screamer from Edgar Gonzalez.

Madrid battled back to triumph as Jude Bellingham converted a penalty and Vinicius Junior used his upper arm to divert home an equaliser, before Carvajal’s last-gasp winner.

Madrid had three key VAR adjudications go in their favour, including Vinicius’ goal which Almeria considered handball, a goal of their own ruled out and a penalty given to Madrid.

“(We leave) with the feeling we’ve been robbed,” complained Almeria midfielder Gonzalo Melero.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti disagreed.

“I understand Almeria’s anger with the VAR decisions, but I think they were well judged,” Ancelotti told reporters.

‘Tired team’

Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup last Sunday by thrashing Barcelona in Saudi Arabia and then lost 4-2 against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey in midweek.

“It was a tired team,” explained Ancelotti, who said the first-half display was one to forget.

Madrid came roaring back after that, with Bellingham at the heart of it, La Liga’s joint top scorer with Dovbyk firing home from the spot for his 14th goal of the campaign.

After Vinicius nudged in to level, Bellingham had a goal ruled out for offside and sent a superb overhead kick narrowly wide.

The England international helped create the winner by nodding the ball to the back post for Carvajal to smash home and spark jubilant celebrations after another epic Madrid comeback.

Barcelona, third, let a two-goal lead slip against Betis but recovered to stay in the title race.

Torres scored twice to put Barca two ahead but they surrendered their lead as former Real Madrid playmaker Isco struck a brace of his own.

Joao Felix finished deftly in the 90th minute and Torres netted again to secure victory for the Catalans, who trail neighbours Girona by eight points.

Torres, reaching a century of appearances for Barcelona since joining from Manchester City two years ago, was decisive and said he had worked hard for his moment.

“It’s the fruit of hard work, discipline, consistency, of believing in yourself,” Torres told Movistar.

Barcelona handed young defender Pau Cubarsi his first start and with Lamine Yamal also in the team, lined up with two 16-year-olds.

‘Everyone has seen it’

Barca coach Xavi Hernandez was pleased with their performances but also chose to express his concern at the refereeing in Madrid’s win.

“If we talk they will suspend us, but everybody has seen it,” said Xavi.

“I already said … there were things that didn’t fit right with me in this league.

“There are things that we can’t control and everyone has seen that.”

At Girona’s Montilivi stadium, struggling Sevilla, 17th, and just a point above the relegation zone, took a surprise lead through Isaac Romero.

However Dovbyk’s rapid treble between the 13th and 19th minutes saw Michel Sanchez’s sparkling side take full control.

Ukrainian compatriot Viktor Tsygankov got in on the action early in the second half and substitute Cristhian Stuani rounded off the rout.

“We’re not conscious of how hard it is to do this, because of the feelings that we have, you can see it in our happiness on the pitch,” said Girona winger Portu.

“Day to day here is spectacular, the ones who are playing the least (in the squad) are the ones who are supporting the team the most, you can see the happiness.”

Xavi’s wounded Barca seeks redemption against Real Betis https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/la-liga/xavis-wounded-barca-seeks-redemption-against-real-betis/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 08:58:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1957788 Xavi Hernandez and his wounded Barcelona side visit Real Betis on Sunday in La Liga still dusting themselves down from last weekend’s humbling by Real Madrid.

Barcelona thrashed

The Catalans were thrashed in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, leading to a week of soul searching ahead of the trip to Seville.

ALSO READ: Xavi laments Barcelona’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to Madrid

After an unconvincing win over third-tier Unionistas de Salamanca in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, pressure still weighs on Xavi’s shoulders with the Spanish champions’ top four ambitions under threat.

Barcelona are fourth, level with third-place Athletic Bilbao on 41 points, who visit Valencia on Saturday.

League leaders Girona host Sevilla and Real Madrid, second, welcome bottom side Almeria on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis, seventh, are still aiming for Europe themselves.

Xavi said this week he would walk away from his job if he felt his players did not believe in him.

The team came up short in Riyadh as they were dismantled by their arch-rivals Madrid and Xavi criticised the performance as “lacking in every way”.

Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup

Last season Barca won the Spanish Super Cup, which was Xavi’s first trophy at the helm of the club, and it was a key milestone on the way to lifting La Liga.

Without the financial leverage to make signings in January, the coach must make do with what he has as he bids to turn the team’s form around.

Xavi lamented the long-term loss of Gavi through injury, with the midfielder’s tenacity missing in recent matches.

“We lack Gavi’s leadership, his heart,” said the coach. “The injury to Gavi is a dagger in the heart, he is the soul of the team, that’s the reality.”

Without first choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, also out, the team has lacked security at the back.

Barcelona have been particularly bad in the first halves of matches, frequently falling behind early on.

Their defence is far weaker than last season, having already conceded more goals than in that whole league campaign, despite playing half as many games.

Up front the team is not clicking and big chances go begging, with veteran striker Robert Lewandowski in inconsistent form.

In Betis they come up against a previous nemesis in former Real Madrid playmaker Isco, who has found top form in the south of Spain.

After playing a bit-part role for Madrid and an ill-fated spell at Sevilla, the 31-year-old has dazzled this season.

ALSO READ: Sergi Roberto’s late strike secures Barcelona’s unconvincing win

“It’s a very difficult game, without a doubt,” Isco told Betis’ media channels.

“They are coming after a very tough defeat and have to find their rage and pride because if not, Madrid and Girona will escape from them.

“We have to be our best Betis to fight for the points — they will have to sweat blood to beat us here.”

Betis have various players out, including Nabil Fekir, Ayoze Perez and former Barcelona defender Marc Batra.

Regardless, they will believe they can inflict further damage on Xavi’s wobbling Barcelona.

Player to watch: Artem Dovbyk (Girona)

Girona’s top goalscorer with 11 strikes in La Liga, Dovbyk came up short in their goalless draw with Almeria last weekend and was replaced. The striker was rested in the Copa del Rey win over Rayo Vallecano in midweek and will be fresh for Sevilla’s visit on Sunday, aiming to get back on track.

The 32-year-old French forward turned well and drove a low effort into the far corner to pull Atletico level at 2-2 in the first half of a pulsating derby clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Basque hosts Alaves frustrated Madrid even before the Spanish giants’ defender Nacho Fernandez was sent off 10 minutes after the break.

With the clock going into second-half injury time, it looked like Girona would lead the Spanish top-flight going into 2024 thanks to Madrid’s draw, but 32-year-old Vazquez had other plans.

Experienced Germany midfielder Toni Kroos whipped in a corner and Vazquez opened his account for the season with a free header, as Los Blancos top the table on goal difference before La Liga takes a break until January 2.

But German Pezzella, a World Cup winner with Argentina, levelled with two minutes to play as Betis extended their unbeaten run to 13 games — nine of which have been draws.

Girona, the club part-owned by the owners of Manchester City, dropped points for only the fourth time in 18 games this season.

Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga made a smart double save from Willian Jose and Ayoze Perez in the first half before the visitors struck after Savio was fouled in the area by Aitor Ruibal.

Dovbyk stepped up and calmly rolled home the spot-kick to continue his fine debut season in Spain.

Girona

But Girona, making an unlikely title push in only their fourth season in the top flight, failed to clear a late corner and Pezzella slammed the loose ball beyond Gazzaniga.

Xavi Hernandez’s side ended 2023 with a win thanks to Sergi Roberto’s double and a first-half goal from Raphinha.

ALSO READ: Girona stuns Barcelona 4-2 to claim historic top spot

Twice the 20th-placed visitors pegged back the Catalan giants courtesy of goals from Leo Baptistao and Edgar Gonzalez but it was eventually the home team who held out to claim the spoils.

Struggling Barcelona?

The opening 45 minutes threw up several good chances for both sides as Barcelona set about methodically trying to break down the visitors.

It was nearly an early set-piece that did the trick for the Catalans when captain Sergi Roberto was left all alone in the centre of the box but ‘keeper Luis Maximiano did exceptionally well to keep out his headed effort.

The hosts then got a warning shot at the other end after Ronald Araujo missed a cross and Joao Cancelo desperately had to intervene to block Largie Ramazani’s effort in the 13th minute.

Raphinha opened the scoring on 33 minutes when weak Almeria defending, again from a corner, allowed Araujo to get a header goalwards, Maximiano made another fine stop but was unable to do anything about Raphinha’s lashed rebound.

ALSO READ: Barcelona, Dortmund, Madrid, and Lazio secure knockout spots

Now in the lead, Xavi’s charges took their foot off the pedal, yet they almost got a second when Robert Lewandowski was gifted the ball in the box by a defender and only another excellent Maximiano save denied him.

This drop in intensity did then prove to be their undoing as just eight minutes later, Leo Baptistao shocked them with an equaliser.

A defensive error by Araujo let Sergio Arribas slip the Brazilian striker through and his dinked finish over Inaki Pena quickly resulted in the assistant’s flag being raised.

Initially off-side earlier in the move, VAR replays showed he had got back onside by the time Arribas played him the ball.

Xavi

Xavi rang the changes at half-time and sent on Ferran Torres and Jules Kounde in place of Joao Felix and Andreas Christensen.

Torres had an instant impact, working the Portuguese stopper with a firm strike three minutes after half-time.

ALSO READ: Barcelona’s comeback against Porto secures knockout spot

Despite this injection of pace, the home side still looked sluggish.

Poor set-piece defending gave Barca the chance they needed to get back in front on the hour mark, Sergi Roberto meeting a corner at the near post and lofting a header over the goalkeeper’s dive into the far corner.

The second goal appeared to have knocked the stuffing out of the 20th-placed side but a gift from Pena got them back in it, when he dropped a lofted free-kick at Edgar’s feet and the defender gleefully rolled the ball into the unguarded net.

Barca had a golden chance to win the game with just over 10 minutes remaining, but first Lewandowski then Ilkay Gundogan were unable to make sufficient contact with their headers when the goal was gaping before them.

But it was Sergi Roberto, in just his fifth appearance of the season, that provided the winning goal for the Spanish champions when he burst onto Lewandowski’s lofted pass in the 83rd minute and slotted past Maximiano.

Five minutes later, Pena atoned for his earlier error by making a great reflex save from an Iddrisu Baba header as his side stumbled over the line in a topsy-turvy encounter.

Later, Athletic Bilbao went level on points with fourth-place Atletico Madrid after beating Las Palmas 1-0 and near the foot of the table, Rafael Benitez’s Celta Vigo lost 3-2 at Villarreal.

Jude Bellingham shines as Real Madrid defeat Villarreal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/la-liga/jude-bellingham-shines-as-real-madrid-defeat-villarreal-breaking-18-december-2023/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 08:33:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1922081 La Liga sensation Jude Bellingham struck again as Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 win over Villarreal on Sunday to move top of the table.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are a point ahead of Catalan minnows Girona, who host Alaves on Monday and will be looking to reclaim pole position.

Bellingham shines

Spain’s top scorer Bellingham broke the deadlock for Madrid with his 13th league goal before Rodrygo Goes doubled their lead.

Villarreal pulled one back through Jose Luis Morales, but Brahim Diaz scored a superb solo goal to restore Madrid’s advantage.

Luka Modric drove home the fourth as Madrid fans celebrated a sizeable victory in their final home match of the year.

“It’s the kind of move I usually try, today it went in, so I’m very happy,” Diaz told Real Madrid TV.

“(I’m happy) for the team’s work, we did a great job today and I’m happy for the goal and for the win.”

Diaz is striking up a fruitful relationship with Bellingham and Rodrygo in attack.

“We understand each other well, we all get along because it’s an incredible group, we are very united and you see that on the pitch,” he added.

ALSO READ: Bellingham excluded from England’s Euro 2024 qualifying matches

The only negative news for Ancelotti came in the form of an injury to defender David Alaba, who he replaced in the first half.

The Italian coach put his faith in England international Bellingham to take an attacking role this season for Madrid and it is paying off in virtually every match.

The 20-year-old netted his 17th goal across all competitions in his 20th match this season to get the party started after Madrid saw rivals Barcelona, third, held at Valencia on Saturday.

Madrid, playing at the renovated Santiago Bernabeu with the new roof closed for just the second time, made the early running against Villarreal.

They got their reward midway through the first half when Bellingham leaped high to nod home Modric’s delicious clipped cross.

Spate of injuries

Alaba went off with an apparent knee injury sustained as he challenged Gerard Moreno, who later went off hurt himself along with teammate Alex Baena and Madrid’s Ferland Mendy.

ALSO READ: Real Madrid’s Bellingham in doubt for Champions League clash

With Thibaut Courtois, Vinicius Junior, Eder Militao, Eduardo Camavinga and others out already, Ancelotti’s pack is worryingly thin.

However, they did not let it show on Sunday, with Rodrygo doubling the lead from close range after the ball bounced to him in the box.

It was the Brazilian’s eighth goal in his last eight games for Real Madrid, continuing his own superb goalscoring form of late after a slow start to the campaign.

Early in the second half, Villarreal pulled one back, with Morales finishing past Andriy Lunin, selected over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

But Diaz whisked the visitors’ hope away when he turned brilliantly away from Aissa Mandi in midfield, drove forward, swerved Jorge Cuenca and finished with ease.

After Modric added the fourth, Madrid fans brought out the ‘ole’ chants as their team passed the ball around an increasingly frustrated Villarreal.

Madrid now have 38 goals in La Liga, equalling Girona’s total as the top scorers to date.

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni made his return from injury as a substitute in the final stages to round off a largely satisfying night for Los Blancos, who open up a seven-point lead on third-place Barcelona.

“It’s always good to build an advantage on Barca but there’s a long way to go in the league and we have to continue with this mentality,” said Rodrygo.

Marcelino’s Villarreal languish 14th, three points above the relegation zone.

Barcelona

Champions Barcelona are fourth after Atletico Madrid, third, beat Almeria earlier on, and Xavi’s side trail Girona by seven points.

Artem Dovbyk sent Girona ahead and after Robert Lewandowski pulled Barcelona level, Miguel Gutierrez slammed home again for the visitors.

Valery Fernandez extended Girona’s lead with 10 minutes remaining, before Ilkay Gundogan netted to set up a frantic finale.

Veteran striker Cristhian Stuani struck from close range in stoppage time to wrap up a stunning victory which reaffirms the minnows’ title dream.

“We were not good, Girona did very well but it’s our fault, we were not at the level we needed to be,” Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong told DAZN.

“We were not good on the ball, I wasn’t either, it cost us the game… we’re seven points behind, which is a lot, but there’s more than half a season to go.

“There’s time, but we have a lot to come back from.”

Girona, part-owned by the City Football Group, were without injured key midfielder Yangel Herrera, whom they signed from Manchester City, but did not let it set them back.

In La Liga for only the fourth season in their history, they played without any fear of their more illustrious neighbours and took the lead early on as the game see-sawed deliciously from end to end.

The visitors split the 27-time champions open with a lethal counter-attack, with Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov feeding his compatriot Dovbyk to slam home in the 12th minute.

Unperturbed, Barcelona levelled quickly through Lewandowski, with the 35-year-old heading home Raphinha’s corner to end a run of three matches without a goal.

Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena tipped away Gutierrez’s shot across goal, while Paulo Gazzaniga denied Joao Cancelo at the other end from close range.

The gloves were off, the mask too — Barca defender Ronald Araujo, who suffered a facial fracture in their win over Atletico Madrid last weekend tossed his protective shield away, hoping for better focus in the intense battle.

However moments later, Girona struck again.

Former Real Madrid left-back Gutierrez, no stranger to an adventure upfield, drove into the box and cracked an early strike into the near top corner.

End-to-end

Barcelona tried to force their way back in, with Gazzaniga saving Frenkie de Jong’s low effort and Raphinha sending a free-kick over the bar, much to Lewandowski’s chagrin.

Valery seemed to end Barca hopes when Stuani headed the ball into his path, with the Spanish forward beating Jules Kounde with ease and firing home.

Fermin Lopez sent an acrobatic effort off-target before Gundogan turned well in the box and lashed past Gazzaniga to give the hosts a chance to snatch a draw.

Lewandowski might have levelled but headed wide when well-placed.

Stuani bundled home at the death to complete a sensational night for Girona, with several of their players leaping the advertising hoardings and running towards their fans in celebration.

Michel said beforehand that a win would send his team into a new dimension and there can be little doubt now they are genuine title contenders this season.

Barca loan star Felix makes Atletico pay in title race https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/la-liga/barca-loan-star-felix-makes-atletico-pay-in-title-race-breaking-04-december-2023/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 07:27:33 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1905514 Joao Felix’s superb dinked finish earned Barcelona a vital 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday in the La Liga title race.

The Portuguese forward, on loan at Barca from Atletico, made no secret of his pleasure to escape the Spanish capital this summer and made his parent club pay at the Olympic Stadium.

Felix

Felix was criticised by some Atletico players ahead of the game and Barca coach Xavi Hernandez called on him to use those words as inspiration, which he duly did.

ALSO READ: Barcelona, Dortmund, Madrid, and Lazio secure knockout spots

The forward’s goal allowed Barca to reclaim third place from Atletico, now trailing leaders Real Madrid and second place Girona by four points.

“He made the difference for the team again, he gave everything, working hard, stealing the ball back, I am very happy for him,” Xavi told reporters.

“I told him to be calm, this extra motivation sometimes speeds you up and you cross the line.”

Xavi hailed his players’ performance as a whole.

“The team had personality, we played very well today -– maybe it’s our best game of the season, a complete one, I would say.

“It’s a very positive sign of what we can and should do in every game – this is what Barca should be.”

Atletico have not won away against the champions in La Liga since 2006, a run now stretching to 18 matches, but arrived thinking this could be the time to snap that streak.

Since crumbling to a defeat in the Clasico by Real Madrid at the end of October, Barcelona have struggled for form and confidence.

Barcelona started well, carving out chances and Felix broke the deadlock after 28 minutes, taking a brilliant touch to ride Nahuel Molina’s challenge and then dinking the ball over Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Felix celebrated with arms aloft, standing on the advertising hoardings in front of the angry visiting supporters, while Rojiblancos coach Diego Simeone appeared disgruntled as he flashed up on the big screens.

The 24-year-old forward, a club record signing at 126 million euros ($137 million) in 2019, never settled in the capital and did not click with Simeone’s management and playing style.

“It was spontaneous… in the heat of the game and it was like a relief, for everything I lived through this summer,” Felix told Movistar about his celebration.

“Every week I’m talked about, whether for good or bad, I do my job, without looking at what they say or think.”

Payback

Perhaps not coincidentally, Axel Witsel was soon booked for hacking Felix to the ground shortly after.

Felix came close to a second with a prodded effort from Ilkay Gundogan’s cut-back, but this time Oblak denied him.

Gundogan impressed in midfield alongside fit-again duo Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, as Barcelona controlled the game.

Raphinha clipped the post at the start of the second half to get Barcelona fans out of their seats.

Despite their high-calibre opponents, the attendance fell short of 35,000 and was the club’s poorest this season, with supporters perhaps chastened by the colder winter evenings and the late kick-off.

Atletico improved in the second half but not by enough to force an equaliser.

Talisman Antoine Griezmann worked hard but could not find the net against his old employers — he has not netted in 14 games against Barca for the Rojiblancos.

ALSO READ: Barcelona’s fate hangs in the balance as they face Porto

Memphis Depay, another ex-Barcelona player, came closest for Atletico with a free-kick tipped over by Inaki Pena, between the sticks for the hosts in place of the hurt Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

“They started better, they had more personality with the ball,” admitted Simeone.

“The team improved and had the chances to equalise.”

Robert Lewandowski should have wrapped up Barcelona’s victory but pulled an effort wide late on – he only has three goals in his last 10 games for the club across all competitions.

Atletico, fourth, trail Barca by three points and the top two by seven.

“The idea was to go for the game and I don’t know what happened,” Atletico goalkeeper Oblak told Movistar.

“Nobody was good in the first half, nobody wanted the ball, nobody wanted to play.”

The Brazilian winger also set up a goal for La Liga’s top scorer, Jude Bellingham, who now has 11 to his name this season in the Spanish top flight.

Real Madrid is almost at the top of La Liga

Madrid climbed a point clear of high-flying Girona, who host Athletic Bilbao on Monday, looking to reclaim the top spot.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side also rose four points clear of fourth-placed rivals Barcelona, following their 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, and third-placed Atletico Madrid.

ALSO READ: Real Madrid’s Camavinga faces knee ligament injury blow

Madrid was dealt severe blows over the past fortnight, with Vinicius Junior and Eduardo Camavinga suffering long-term injuries, joining Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao and Aurelien Tchouameni on the sidelines.

Despite that, Madrid secured a straightforward victory, which is not something they take for granted after the international break, and less so with an injury-ravaged squad.

Difficulties are always motivational

“Sometimes the difficulty is just more motivation, and the players understood that very well,” Ancelotti told reporters. “All the absences that we have are important players, but we managed it well, and the team was very good out there.”

The Italian coach started Toni Kroos in defensive midfield and brought veteran playmaker Luka Modric into the team for only his fifth start in La Liga this season.

Bellingham also returned after missing two league games and England’s Euro qualifiers with a shoulder injury.

The Brazilian struggled for goals at the start of the season, but Ancelotti kept faith in him, and with Vinicius sidelined, he will be crucial for Madrid in the coming weeks.

Rodrygo’s goals mean he has scored in three consecutive games for the first time since arriving at the club in 2019. “Rodrygo is back — he made the difference today,” said Ancelotti.

Cadiz had chances in the first half

Cadiz had their chances in an open first half, too, with Chris Ramos heading over before Rodrygo’s opener and Andriy Lunin tipping Roger Marti’s fierce effort to safety.

Madrid should have doubled their lead early in the second half after Rodrygo dribbled around Cadiz goalkeeper Conan Ledesma, but Joselu left it to him to finish, and he, in turn, left it for the veteran striker, with the ball running out of play.

However, Rodrygo had his second soon enough, another fine strike after dribbling into the box from 30 yards out.

After Maxi Gomez missed a fine chance for the hosts, the inspired Rodrygo set up the third for Bellingham, and the England international drilled a tidy low finish across goal with his left foot.

With the job done, Ancelotti withdrew both goalscorers and handed young forward Gonzalo Garcia his debut.

Garcia’s remarks on his club

“I’m grateful and happy; since I was little, I’ve been a Real Madrid fan, and I’ve dreamed of playing with the first team,” Garcia, 19, told Real Madrid TV.

“I’ll keep the shirt, and I’ll ask my teammates to sign it.” The only negative note for Madrid was Modric going off with what Ancelotti said was a “muscle overload”.

Madrid host Napoli on Wednesday in the Champions League having already qualified from the group but looking to seal the top spot.

Earlier Sunday, Marcelino Garcia Toral enjoyed a comfortable win on his return to La Liga management with Villarreal, with Jose Luis Morales’ hat-trick sinking Osasuna 3-1.

Real Sociedad, fifth, earned a 2-1 win at Sevilla, who had Sergio Ramos and Jesus Navas sent off. Veteran defender Ramos’s dismissal was the 29th red card of his career and a record-extending 21st in La Liga.

Willian Jose’s goal helped Real Betis, seventh, edge Las Palmas 1-0 to pull level with Athletic Bilbao, sixth, on 24 points.

After finishing at the bottom of their group last season, Atletico is desperate to progress and knows they face a fierce battle at De Kuip in the Netherlands, with the hosts fighting to avoid elimination.

Griezmann is in his top form

Atletico lead Group E on eight points, one ahead of Lazio and two up on third-placed Feyenoord, and a win would send them through. Griezmann, who scored a fine header against Mallorca to take Atletico third in La Liga on Saturday, is in superlative form.

The French forward has nine goals in the Spanish top flight, only trailing the division’s top goalscorer, Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, and has netted four in four Champions League matches thus far.

ALSO READ: Real Madrid beats Palmas as underdog Girona tops La Liga table

He has eight goals and two assists in his last seven games for the club across all competitions. Griezmann played the full 90 minutes against Mallorca with coach Diego Simeone unable to rest the forward as his team had to fight until the end to take the three points.

“It’s difficult to think about taking him off,” said Simeone. “He’s so important to us; it’s a shame that he always, or almost always, plays 90 minutes.” The Argentine coach has made Griezmann a central figure in the Atletico team, sometimes literally, deploying the 32-year-old in midfield on occasion.

Griezmann scored twice against Celtic while playing there in Atletico’s 6-0 win earlier in November at the Metropolitano. It allows Griezmann to put his imprint on the game more without losing sight of his goalscoring duties.

His goal against Mallorca was his 170th for the club, trailing all-time top Atletico goalscorer Luis Aragones by only three. “(Griezmann) will be living history at Atletico Madrid, he will surpass Luis Aragones,” said midfielder Koke.

“We’re so happy when he’s on the pitch — I hope he’s as fresh as possible (for Feyenoord), but he looks good to us.” Feyenoord have a strong record at home, with seven consecutive victories across all competitions, while Atletico have won just two in their last six away from home.

Simeone remarks about his ‘boys’

Griezmann’s defensive work-rate will be key if Atletico are to shackle the hosts and impose themselves in the iconic stadium. “(Griezmann) always has something different that can appear,” continued Simeone. “He manages himself very well, he brings into the match what he needs to from his game.”

The forward has also developed a knack for being the player to open the scoring, as he did against Mallorca. Griezmann has done so on nine occasions this year and will hope to make it ten against Feyenoord.

Beyond this week, the player has said he wants to follow Simeone in committing his future to the club. “I’m very happy for him — now it’s my turn,” said Griezmann earlier in November, after the coach signed on until 2027.

The forward signed on until 2026 after returning from his disappointing stint at Barcelona, and after winning over supporters again, has returned to his position as Atletico’s key figure.

Francisco’s Rayo Vallecano can be a tough nut to crack, as Real Madrid found in a frustrating 0-0 draw against their city rivals earlier in November. Rayo also came close to taking points off surprise package Girona but fell to a 2-1 defeat by Michel’s shock leaders.

Girona host Athletic Bilbao on Monday, looking to at least preserve their two-point lead on second-place Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s side, also beset by injuries, visit Cadiz on Sunday.

Real Madrid was dealt bad blows by Eduardo Camavinga’s own knee ligament tear while with France, joining long-term absentees Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao and Vinicius Junior’s hamstring injury. With Spain’s top two suffering, Girona and Atletico Madrid, fourth, will look to pile on the pressure.

The Girona striker has hit his stride and has netted seven goals this season. The Ukrainian target man will do battle with Athletic Bilbao’s defence on Monday looking to add to his tally and keep his team defying expectations at the top of the table.

Barcelona are also on their own miserable run of performances, which Xavi said is because the players are nervous, especially the younger ones, due to heavy media criticism.

Before the match, Xavi said the team were not in crisis despite the recent Clasico defeat and a stumble against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek and that it was up to him to bring them out of their slump. However, it took just 18 seconds for Alaves to strike.

Ilkay Gundogan lost the ball in midfield, and with Barcelona’s defence in total disarray, Javi Lopez crossed for Omorodion, who slotted through Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s legs. “We cannot make those mistakes; it’s unacceptable,” said Xavi. “We’re giving far too much away, and that takes a toll.”

Simeone’s remarks on Antoine

“I know that Antoine will go down in the history of the club, for sure, because of the number of goals that he has scored and that we hope that he continues to score,” said Simeone, lavishing praise on his crucial player.

Griezmann said that he was delighted that Simeone had penned a new contract, and he, too, would like to pledge his future to the club. “Surely his turn will come,” the coach told Movistar.

“The club is working to continue growing, and Griezmann is very important in the present and in the future.” Seventh-placed Betis took the lead against Sevilla through Ayoze Perez in the 72nd minute as the visitors looked to pile on the misery for their suffering rivals.

Diego Alonso’s side have not won in La Liga since September, drawing five matches in a row. However, Rakitic earned them a point on this occasion with a superb strike from outside the area to keep his side in mid-table.

Jude Bellingham will be unveiled as a new Real Madrid player tomorrow, Thursday 15 June, at 12:00 noon at Real Madrid City.

Following this, Jude Bellingham will speak to the media.”

Speaking last month, Bellingham had revealed his desire to join one of European football’s powerhouses.

Bellingham said: “The goal has always been winning.

“When you ask me what my biggest ambitions are in the game, it’s to win everything. And I’m not afraid to say that.

“I feel like everyone should have that goal as professional footballers.”

Kroos warns him

Teammate Toni Kroos warned the young star to avoid what happened to Eden Hazard. The former Chelsea star saw his career flatline in Spain and left with a year still to run.

Kroos admitted as much when speaking of Bellingham’s €103m move to the Spanish capital, announced by the La Liga giants on Wednesday. The German told his Einfach mal Luppen podcast: “€103m transfer fee? We now also had someone who came for a lot of money and virtually let his career rest. A lot of money and I think everyone would say in retrospect: That was not such a good transfer. But now let’s start from the positive.”

Real Madrid to lose THREE superstars but gain a king? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/real-madrid-lose-three-superstars-kane-coming-breaking-6-june-2023/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 11:46:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1628708 Real Madrid are going through a big end of season overhaul with the departures of several former stars but hoping to land a new striker.

If Harry Kane was ever to move somewhere to challenge for titles, it would be now. But will Real Madrid spend £100 million on a player nearly 30 years old?

Misfiring Spurs have not been kind to “King Kane” but a move to replace Karim Benzema would certainly put his name in the spotlight once again.

Only Erling Haaland scored more than the Spurs forward this term but Kane’s 30 goals only powered his club to eighth. Kane has only one year left on his contract.

Kane would leave a legend

In total, Kane has scored 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs and is 47 goals shy of Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record of 260.

Ange Postecoglou has since been appointed as the permanent replacement at Spurs.

Would he be the perfect replacement at Real Madrid?

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, Chelsea’s Kai Havertz and Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic are also on Real Madrid’s agenda following Benzema’s exit.

He leaves after 14 years at the club. Benzema won five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles with Real Madrid.

Real Madrid star off to Saudi

Benzema is in line to join Cristiano Ronaldo in the Gulf kingdom after the Portuguese five-time world player of the year moved to Al Nassr from Manchester United following last year’s World Cup.

“Benzema has signed a contract for his transfer to Al-Ittihad for a three-year period starting next season,” the source said.

Also quitting Real Madrid are Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio.

Mariano Diaz is another expected departure.

Vinicius Jr suffers racist abuse and is sent off  https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/la-liga/vinicius-jr-suffers-racist-abuse-and-is-sent-off-22-may-2023/ Mon, 22 May 2023 13:50:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1607405 Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr was again the subject of racist abuse following his side’s 1-0 loss to Valencia on Sunday.

The winger was also sent off in the match after an altercation with Hugo Duro. Before that however, the Brazilian was racially abused by opposition fans during the match.

Vinicius Jr took to social media to address La Liga about their ‘lack of enthusiasm’ in dealing with racism.

“The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi today belongs to racists,” Vinicius wrote on his Instagram.

Vinicius Jr victim to racial abuse in Spain

“It wasn’t the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it’s normal, the federation does too and the opponents encourage it.

“A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and which I love, but which agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world. I’m sorry for the Spaniards who don’t agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists.

“And unfortunately, for everything that happens each week, I have no defence. I agree. But I am strong and I will go to the end against racists. Even if far from here,” Vinicius Jr said.

Real Madrid issued a statement on Monday.

“Real Madrid C. F. strongly condemns the events that took place yesterday against our player Vinícius Junior. These events represent a direct attack on the social and democratic model of coexistence of our State based on the rule of law.

“Real Madrid believes that such attacks also constitute a hate crime, and has therefore filed the corresponding report with the Attorney General’s Office, specifically with the Prosecutor’s Office against crimes of hatred and discrimination, in order for the facts to be investigated and for those responsible to be held accountable,” Madrid said on Vinicius Jr incident.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has posted on Instagram to show support to Vini: “You’re not alone. We are with you & we support you.”

Brazil legend Ronaldo has also joined the calls for La Liga to stand up to the racists.

“Once again an episode of racism on @vinijr. Once again with @laliga. When does it stop? As long as there’s impunity and complicity, there’s racism. It is inadmissible that referees, the Federation and authorities remain without action. Enough is enough. Vini count me in your fight in our struggle, ” he said.

If all went as planned, Drake could’ve walked away with R51 million (£2.5 million).

However, while Arsenal did beat Leeds 1-0, Real Madrid picked up a 3-1 win at the Bernabeu over Barcelona.

Tweeps believe Barcelona fell victim to the “Drake curse”.

This comes after Barcelona switched the usual Spotify logo on their shirts to Drake’s OVO owl logo for what was the 250th edition of El Clasico.

The decision came after the rapper became the first artist to surpass 50 billion streams on Spotify.

WHAT IS THE ‘DRAKE CURSE’?

According to The Mirror, the “Drake Curse” has become a meme in the last few years because of the immediate downfall of athletes and sports teams after having some interaction with the Find Your Love hitmaker.

The “interaction” sometimes involves the rapper posing for a photo with an athlete or donning the shirt of a sports team before their upcoming game and th- e person or team losing soon after.

This first started when Paul Pogba posed for a photo with the rapper in 2019.

Four days later, Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves.

Adding to the spectacle, it’s a top-of-the-table La Liga clash with both sides sharing identical league records this term (W7, D1) and comfortably clear of their nearest challengers.

Real Madrid snatched a last-gasp 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw on Tuesday night against Shakhtar Donetsk and although they rested players who should feature here, it was an underwhelming performance.

Even manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted that “we played really poorly tonight,” before praising his side for never giving up.

They’ve needed those battling qualities, as Real Madrid haven’t dominated games from the off in recent weeks, even at home.

In two of their last four home outings, Los Blancos needed goals after the 70th minute to finish off the job, although they failed to score after half-time in each of their last two fixtures at Santiago Bernabéu.

Seeking to capitalise on any potential weaknesses in the Real Madrid ranks, Barcelona come into this derby following seven straight La Liga victories, the last six of those without conceding.

With memories of last term’s 4-0 head-to-head win at this venue still fresh in the memory, they’re targeting two successive La Liga head-to-head wins for the first time since March 2019 and should be buoyed by Wednesday’s come-from-behind 3-3 Champions League draw with Inter Milan.

Barcelona have won 4 of last 6 matches in Madrid

Impressively, Barcelona have won four of the last six head-to-heads in Madrid (L2) and are eyeing up overtaking Real Madrid in the La Liga head-to-head scoring stakes – both stand level at 295 goals (Barcelona: W73, D35, L76).

If so, they might get it done early as they’ve netted within 25 minutes in three of their last four league away games.

Sunday’s match will kick off at 16:15 (SA time).

Key battle

Vinícius Júnior has scored in four of Madrid’s last five home games, twice opening the scoring, but he’ll hav

e to beat Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who hasn’t conceded for 624 minutes in La Liga and has saved 95% of shots he’s faced in the league this term.

Hot streak

The last seven head-to-heads in Madrid were won by the team scoring first (Madrid: W3, L4).

“Yes, yes almost” he replied when quizzed about whether he had made a choice yet after picking up his third straight best player of the season award in Paris on Sunday.

The waiting to see whether the 23-year-old moves to the Spanish capital or stays with PSG to help them in their protracted quest to land the Champions League “is almost over” he added.

He plans to “announce” his decision before France play Denmark in the Nations League on June 3.

Refusing to divulge anything further despite being given ample opportunity to do so at the awards ceremony he thanked “PSG, which enabled me to be here, my team-mates and coach.”

He added: “My story goes on, I keep on winning, I’m never satisfied, and that’s good.”

Also attending the awards dinner was his PSG captain Marquinhos whose only comment on the issue keeping PSG fans and their Real counterparts awake at night was: “I hope that next season he will win this trophy again.”

Kylian Mbappe has made no secret of his desire to play for Real Madrid

Last week a French newspaper reported that the French Soccer World Cup winner had agreed in principle to remain at PSG for up to another three years.

This was quickly denied by his mother.

Mbappe has made no secret of his desire to play one day for Real Madrid, who are in the Champions League final after securing a 35th Spanish title.

But PSG, who have won the Ligue 1 title for a record-equalling 10th time but angered their hardcore supporters with their limp exit to Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, are battling to hold onto their biggest asset.
