The Soweto giants kicked off their CAF aspiration with a 0-0 draw against Disciples in the first league of the first round but bounced back in style last Friday winning 4-0 at home. Jose Riveiro‘s men will now play Jwaneng Galaxy in the second round of the competition.

Speaking to GOAL, Mathe has given his thoughts on how Pirates will do in this year’s CAF CL.

“With the way they’ve been playing lately, and with consistency, I believe they will reach the knockout stages, and when you reach that stage, everything is possible,” he said.

“But we must first win the next game against a strong side of Jwaneng Galaxy. It won’t be an easy task, but I’m confident we will beat them this time.

Mathe tips Pirates to win the CAF Champions League

“The team has learned from last season’s disappointment in the Champions League. This is their season to go as far as the knockout stages. And as I said, they can even go as far as winning the title,” Mathe concluded.

Pirates have only reached the CAF group stages twice in the past decade and will be aiming to do so this season. In their way stands Galaxy; the same team that eliminated them at this very stage of the competition last year.

Pirates will play Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF second round knowing that a win would put them in the group stages of the competition.

Orlando Pirates’ CAF CL opponents revealed! Bucs must overcome ‘black magic’? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/breaking-orlando-pirates-caf-cl-opponents-revealed-bucs-black-magic-jwaneng/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 16:45:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2163331 Orlando Pirates will play a team they know very well in the second round of the CAF Champions League.

Having defeated Madagascan side Disciples 4-0 on aggregate, the Buccaneers had to wait until Saturday evening to know which team they were up against. The 1995 CAF CL winners will face Morena Ramoreboli‘s Jwaneng Galaxy in the second round of the preliminary round.

Galaxy had to overcome African Stars 6-5 on penalties to set up a meeting with the Mighty Buccaneers. The Botswana giants knocked out Orlando Pirates in the CAF CL second round last year.

Morena Ramoboli’s side defeated Pirates at home before losing the second leg 1-0 in Orlando. With the tie 1-1, a penalty shootout followed and the Buccaneers were eliminated in front of their home fans.

Orlando Pirates and Jwaneng Galaxy meet again in CAF

This season, the Sea Robbers look stronger and energised; on paper, they should beat their neighbours. The Soweto giants though have a habit of choking in the preliminary rounds. In 2010, they were eliminated by another Botswana team(Gaborone United) in the same stages of the CAF CL.

If Orlando Pirates are to advance to the CAF group stages, they have to outsmart Ramoreboli. The South African coach has previous experience in eliminating the Buccaneers in a tournament. He did so a decade ago with Maluti FET in the Nedbank Cup and last year he also haunted the Bucs once more.

Having beaten Pirates in the CAF second round last year, Jwaneng qualified for the group stages for the first time. Although they failed to reach the quarter-finals, the Botswana champions pulled off another upset when they defeated Wydad Casablanca. After the match, Ramoreboli lashed out at the Moroccan media who accused him of using ‘black magic’.

Pirates will have a chance to avenge their CAF loss to Jwaneng next month.

CAF: Do or die for Orlando Pirates TODAY! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/caf-do-or-die-for-orlando-pirates-today/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 05:06:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2162322 Orlando Pirates are in action on Friday evening in the all-important second leg of their First Preliminary Round tie of the CAF Champions League against Madagascar’s Disciples.

The fixture in Orlando, Soweto is a must-win as the tie hangs in the balance after the opening leg played at Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius ended all square. A scoring draw will see the Buccaneers crash out of the competition while a goalless draw will result in a penalty shoot-out.

Having failed to score away, Orlando Pirates are now at risk of getting eliminated in the CAF CL preliminary rounds again. Should Disciples score, Jose Riveiro‘s me will need to score twice to go through to the second round.

New Bucs signings Deano van Rooyen and Gilberto could make their official debuts after sitting out the trip to Mauritius. With the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng firing blanks, perhaps Gilberto might be the man for big occasions.

Orlando Pirates under pressure ahead of their CAF CL match

Pirates will be looking to keep yet another cup run alive by seeing off Disciples, with the hopes of lining up against one of African Stars and Jwaneng Galaxy for a spot in the group stage. Galaxy eliminated the Buccaneers in last year’s CAF CL preliminary rounds following a penalty shootout.

The game kicks off at 19:30 and will be televised live on SABC Plus. Live updates for the CAF CL match will be shared across Orlando Pirates social media channels.

Orlando Pirates vs Disciples 2nd leg: Date, Time and Permutations https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/orlando-pirates-vs-disciples-2nd-leg-date-time-and-permutations/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 04:36:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159941 Orlando Pirates will host Madagascan side Disciples in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.

The Buccaneers played to a disappointing goalless draw at Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Saint Pierre on Sunday. The result means that the two sides head into the final leg all square after neither managed to grab the upper hand in a highly competitive encounter in Mauritius.

Orlando Pirates fail to fire in their opening CAF match

Pirates had to withstand an early charge from the home side with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine making good saves to keep the Soweto giants in the game. Despite creating better chances throughout the match, the Buccaneers’ poor finishing let them down. The pressure is on Jose Riveiro‘s side on Friday.

When are Pirates playing Disciples in the second leg?

The CAF Champions League second-leg match between Orlando Pirates and Disciples will be played at the Orlando Stadium on Friday at 19:30. After Sunday’s draw, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro remained upbeat regarding his side’s chances of processing further in the competition.

“I think both sides had very clear chances and, strangely, we finished the game goalless,“ the Spaniard said. “We could not manage to capitalise ours to get a goal advantage at least to go into the second leg with an advantage.

For Orlando Pirates to progress to the next stage of the CAF CL, they need to win against the Madagascan side. A scoring draw or defeat will see the Buccaneers eliminated early in the competition.

How can Pirates break the stubborn defence of the Madagascan team?

‘We are out’ – Orlando Pirates legend on the club’s CAF chances https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/we-are-out-orlando-pirates-legend-on-the-clubs-caf-chances/ Mon, 19 Aug 2024 19:35:12 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159976 Orlando Pirates legend Benedict Tso Vilakazi believes his former club might crash out in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

This comes after the Buccaneers were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Madagascar champions Disciples FC in the first leg of the preliminary round in Mauritius on Sunday. Jose Riveiro’s men did not show any signs of urgency in the match and might be in for a surprise in the second leg.

Vilakazi expressed his disappointment after Orlando Pirates failed to win another CAF CL match.

“I’m disappointed because I can’t say that Pirates can reach the quarterfinals while they are playing like this in the qualifying stages of the group stage,” Tso said on iDiski TV.

“There is no time because while you are still playing like this you will be knocked out and complain that you want to play in the AFL while you are busy warming up here [CAF CL].

Orlando Pirates legend Tso worried about their CAF chances

“There is no time. When you want to play with the big teams you need to take every game serious. For me they played like they were tired and just wanted to play the game and finish,” he said.

Orlando Pirates have not reached the quarter-finals of the CAF CL in a decade. Tso is worried that the Madagascan side might eliminate the Buccaneers on home turf this Friday.

“I have been saying Pirates should get to the quarter-finals or semi-finals but if you are going to play like this, you are not even going to manage to go to the first round because your game, your tempo determines where you are going.

“I’m worried because a team like that can hit you unexpectedly. I mean just think of those seconds before the game ended that chance they missed. My worry is that if these guys can get a similar chance and manage to punish us, we are out.

Another thing is that it is a draw and who is under pressure, it’s Pirates,” Vilakazi added.

Orlando Pirates will host the return leg this Friday looking to advance to the second round of the CAF Champions League.

CAF Champions League result: Orlando Pirates held by Disciples https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/caf-champions-league-result-orlando-pirates-held-by-disciples-score/ Mon, 19 Aug 2024 09:34:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159725 Orlando Pirates kicked off their CAF Champions League with a disappointing goalless draw against Disciples from Madagascar in the opening leg of their first preliminary round clash at Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Saint Pierre on Sunday.

The result means that the two sides head into the second leg all square after neither managed to grab the upper hand in a highly competitive encounter in Mauritius.

Second leg in Soweto

Orlando Pirates had to withstand an early charge from the home side with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine called upon to deal with a dangerous ball delivered into the box seven minutes in.

The men from Antsirabe remained in the ascendancy for much of the opening quarter, but without affecting the scoreboard, while using the offside trap effectively at the other end as the Buccaneers looked to counter.

It took until after the hour mark for Orlando Pirates to spark an opportunity at goal as Relebohile Mofokeng looked to pounce from a tight angle, but his shot was deflected away from the target.

Monnapule Saleng managed to beat the offside trap in the 37th minute, going clear towards goal before forcing a save off goalkeeper Ando Andrianavalona.

That turned out to be Orlando Pirates’ best chance of the first half as the two sides returned to the tunnel still deadlocked.

The hosts emerged from the break looking to push ahead but could not trouble Chaine who made a fairly comfortable save in the 52nd minute, denying Andy Rakotondrajoa.

At the other end, the Soweto giants continued to pursue the opener.

They were not far from edging ahead in the 61st minute as Kabelo Dlamini drew Andrianavalona into a reflex save with a powerfully struck shot from the edge of the box.

Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa had a few chances in the second half when he volleyed over the bar from close range before being denied by the woodwork moments later with an effort from inside the box.

The Malagasy champions, however, finished the contest the brighter of the two sides as they continued to force the Buccaneers to defend while erring with their final touch.

Neither side could find the breakthrough in the end in the historic first clash between the two sides who are scheduled to meet again in the deciding clash at the Orlando Stadium on Friday, 23 August at 19:30.

Opinion: Why Pirates struggle in the CAF Champions League https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/opinion-why-pirates-struggle-in-the-caf-champions-league/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 14:42:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2159326 Orlando Pirates has had a strong team for the past four years but has failed to make an impact in the CAF Champions League.

Despite reaching the final in 2013, the Buccaneers have not been able to advance past the group stages in subsequent years. In the previous season, the team, led by Jose Riveiro, was eliminated in the second preliminary round by Jwaneng Galaxy from Botswana.

Orlando Pirates continue to struggle in the CAF Champions League.

In 2010, Orlando Pirates were knocked out by Gaborone United in the preliminary rounds, despite having a superior squad. Interestingly, Gaborone United went on to achieve significant success, winning consecutive trebles and reaching the 2013 CAF CL final.

So, why does Orlando Pirates perform poorly in the CAF Champions League?

Although the team has been successful in cup competitions, winning five of their last six finals, they have struggled in league and CAF competitions.
The Soweto Giants had an average 2023/24 season, finishing second behind Mamelodi Sundowns. Orlando Pirates qualified for the CAF Champions League only because Stellenbosch FC faltered and lost eight points in their final three matches.

Two-legged ties have been a challenge for Riveiro’s men

In the previous season, Pirates barely made it to the MTN8 final due to an away goal against Stellenbosch. They won 2-1 away but put up a poor performance at home, narrowly losing 1-0 and surviving a late Stellenbosch surge.

Around the same time, Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of the CAF Champions League in Botswana. In the return leg, Riveiro’s men only managed a 1-0 win and were forced into penalties, where Galaxy emerged victorious with a 5-4 scoreline in front of a packed Orlando crowd.

The failure to secure a comfortable lead in the first leg has been a recurring issue for Pirates, especially when facing smaller teams. On Sunday, the Buccaneers were held to a 0-0 draw against Madagascan champion Disciples away. Pirates will host the return leg this Friday looking to advance to the second round of the CAF Champions League.

The pressure now is on Riveiro’s men to win without conceding a goal.

How much will Sundowns and Pirates pocket for winning the CAF Champions League? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/how-much-will-sundowns-and-pirates-pocket-for-winning-the-caf-champions-league/ Sun, 18 Aug 2024 08:12:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2158824 Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are two South African soccer teams that will feature in this season’s CAF Champions League.

By winning the Premier Soccer League, Masandawana have automatic entry into the Champions League as well as Pirates, who finished second. Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United finished third and fourth, respectively which gave them a Caf Confederation Cup ticket.

Sundowns and Pirates to earn millions if reach CAF group stages

All the teams participating in the preliminary stages would receive R900,0000.

“In line with the Caf President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s promise to improve club competitions and provide more financial assistance to clubs, the [teams] participating in the Preliminary Stages of the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup will receive USD 50000 (Approximately R900,0000) each,” CAF said on their website.

Sundowns and Pirates have a chance to pocket R72 million should they win the CAF Champions League. The competition’s runner-up is awarded half of the amount. The semi-finalists will be rewarded R21 million while the quarter-finalists will go home with R16 million.

The remaining two teams in the group will each receive R13 million.

The CAF Confederation Cup champions will receive R36 million as a reward, while the runner-up will receive half that amount. Semi-finalists are guaranteed R13 million, and quarter-finalists will receive R10 million. The two teams at the bottom of the group will each get R7 million.

Pirates are in action this weekend while Sundowns have to wait until September to play their first CAF CL match of the season. The Buccaneers take on Madagascan side CNaPS Sport in the first leg of the CAF CL preliminary round.

If Sundowns and Pirates reach the final, both teams would have earned over R100 million in the CAF competition.

Orlando Pirates CAF Champions League: ALL the new jersey numbers https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/orlando-pirates-caf-champions-league-all-the-new-jersey-numbers-fixture-result-score/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 16:49:17 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157535 When Orlando Pirates open their 2024 CAF Champions League campaign this weekend, there will be some notable differences to the playing jersey numbers, relative to what supporters will have been accustomed to in the Betway Premiership.

As a quick reminder, the Buccaneers qualified for this season’s CAF Champions League after securing second place in the league last season.

They will join league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in representing South Africa in Africa’s premier club competition.

According to the Confederation of African Football rules, all continental tournaments allow for a maximum of 40 registered players, all sporting the numbers 1-40 and without names on the jerseys.

With this in mind, the previously unused Orlando Pirates jersey numbers 10, 13 and 22 will once again make an on-field return in this season’s CAF Champions League.

In the past, the number 10 jersey was worn by Vincent Pule, but since Mashonisa’s departure, the famous number 10 jersey, has been vacated and will now have a new owner.

Reigning PSL Players Player of the Season, Patrick ‘Tito’ Maswanganyi, who currently dons the number 28 jersey in the league, will wear number 10.

Meanwhile, Relebohile Mofokeng will exchange his number 38 for number 3 in this year’s competition.

Other jersey number changes will include the players who are usually numbered higher than 40 in the season roster, and these players will don the numbers currently vacated by the unregistered squad players for this phase of the competition.

Only 36 players have been registered for the tournament by Orlando Pirates.

Orlando Pirates will look to add their second star when they face CNaPS Sport of Madagascar in the CAF Champions League first leg preliminary round.

The first leg will take place in Madagascar on Sunday, 18 August at 13:00 (SA time).

The second leg at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto will be held on Friday, 23 August at 19:30.

Rulani Mokwena’s plans and SA targets for Wydad AC revealed! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/rulani-mokwenas-plans-and-sa-targets-for-wydad-ac-revealed/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 10:36:03 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2139964 Rulani Mokwena’s bold plans and South African targets for Wydad Athletic Club have been revealed. Mokwena, the newly appointed head coach of Wydad, has set forth his ambitious vision for the team as he assumes leadership at one of Morocco’s premier football clubs. With a proven track record at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he secured both the African Football League and DStv Premiership titles last season. Mokwena’s arrival at Wydad marks a pivotal moment for the club’s aspirations.

Amidst fanfare and anticipation, Rulani Mokwena was officially unveiled during a special ceremony at Complexe Mohamed Benjelloun. Signing a three-year contract, Mokwena wasted no time in outlining his mission to elevate Wydad to new heights of success. His tenure begins with a clear objective: to reshape the team into formidable contenders in both domestic and continental competitions.

Focus on South African transfer targets

During his introductory press conference, Mokwena remained circumspect regarding potential transfers from his native South Africa. Reports circulating in Moroccan media suggested that Mokwena plans to import five technical staff members from South Africa, including Sinethemba Badela as one of his trusted assistants. Additionally, Mokwena hinted at his intention to recruit two South African players, aiming to inject fresh talent and energy into Wydad’s squad.

“We haven’t discussed players yet but we will have a serious discussion with regards to that,” Mokwena confirmed as quoted by iDiski Times. Underscoring his deliberate approach to squad reinforcement.

Assessment of Wydad AC’s current squad

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Mokwena offered insights into Wydad’s current roster and potential areas for improvement. Drawing from his extensive experience competing against Wydad while at Masandawana, Mokwena highlighted the squad’s resilience and quality amidst recent transitions.

“In my experience, there are still members of the squad who have been here. When I look at the squad, I believe we can strengthen,” Mokwena elaborated. “Despite recent losses like Jabrane, there remains significant quality with players like El Motie, Harkass, and Bouhra.”

Ambitious goals for Wydad AC

Looking ahead, Mokwena articulated his vision for Wydad AC, aiming to replicate the championship success he achieved at Sundowns. Emphasising a strategic blend of tactical prowess and team cohesion, Mokwena expressed confidence in Wydad’s potential for growth and dominance in Moroccan football.

“We understand the difficulty of the task ahead, but with patience, time, and the support around me, achieving success is possible,” Mokwena affirmed. “I’m excited by the ambition of those who brought me here—they want to win and see this club thrive.”

As Rulani Mokwena embarks on his journey with Wydad AC, his strategic approach and ambitious plans to strengthen the squad signal a new era of competitiveness. Stay tuned for updates as Mokwena navigates the challenges and opportunities in leading Wydad to glory in the upcoming seasons. With his leadership, Wydad fans can expect a revitalised team ready to challenge for top honours both domestically and on the continental stage.

Morrocan giants close to signing Ex-Sundowns Coach – Details https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/morrocan-giants-close-to-signing-ex-sundowns-coach-latest/ Wed, 10 Jul 2024 11:56:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2137920 Morrocan giants Wydad Casablanca are close to signing former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, according to The South African sources.

Moroccan powerhouse Wydad is on the brink of securing a deal with former Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Rulani Mokwena. The 37-year-old’s strong connection with Wydad supporters has reportedly played a crucial role in the club’s decision to pursue him.

Contract details and salary offer

Sources from Casablanca indicate that Mokwena is poised to receive a lucrative two-year contract. Which comes with an option for an extension, and a monthly salary exceeding R500,000. He is also expected to have the authority to bring in up to three members of his technical team, including trusted associate Michael Loftman.

Wydad Casablanca’s pursuit of Mokwena underscores their commitment to securing a coach known for his distinctive style and strong fan appeal. Supporters hold Mokwena in high regard for his coaching philosophy, which resonates deeply within the club.

Insights from a close source

According to The South African, a source close to the negotiations remarked, “Rulani Mokwena commands immense respect as a coach. Not just locally but across the continent, particularly here in Morocco. His style of football resonates deeply with fans, who admire and value his approach. The club has extended a generous three-year contract offer to him. Which reflects their confidence in his ability to lead and innovate.”

The Morrocan giants is expected to formally announce the details of the contract by the end of the week, pending finalisation of specific terms. Fans and stakeholders eagerly await this official confirmation. And are eager for clarity on the agreement’s terms and the strategic direction under Mokwena’s leadership.

Mokwena speaks his truth about Sundowns exit

Rulani Mokwena, former coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, has provided clarity on his departure from the club, asserting that he did not willingly leave as previously stated by the club.

In a candid interview with Robert Marawa on MSW, Mokwena emphasised: “I didn’t want to leave. I have to make it clear that I didn’t want to leave. My hand was forced.”

This assertion contradicts Sundowns’ earlier announcement, which claimed an amicable agreement to part ways.

Mokwena’s remarks suggest there may have been underlying internal conflicts or disagreements within the club that precipitated his unexpected exit. While Sundowns cited club objectives and expectations for their decision, Mokwena’s revelation portrays a different perspective on the circumstances surrounding his departure.

During his tenure, Mokwena achieved significant success, securing multiple league titles despite reported tensions with sporting director Flemming Berg. The nature of these conflicts and their impact on Mokwena’s departure remains a subject of speculation and interest among football enthusiasts.

Kaizer Chiefs forward target eyed by Saudi Arabia – Latest https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/kaizer-chiefs-forward-target-eyed-by-saudi-arabia-latest/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 10:37:19 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2127929 Kaizer Chiefs forward target is reportedly being eyed by Saudi Arabia. Reports from the Gulf region suggest that Percy Tau, the versatile winger from Al Ahly and Bafana Bafana, is attracting interest from Saudi Arabian clubs. Despite his ongoing contract with the Egyptian giants until June 2025.

Tau, 30, who recently won the African Inter-club Player of the Year award, remains a coveted player in the Gulf. He has been sidelined due to an injury sustained during national team duty with Bafana Bafana. Al Ahly are currently chasing the Egyptian Premier League title with six games in hand. And they face stiff competition from leaders Pyramids, who are 17 points ahead.

Potential suitors in Saudi Arabia

According to Gulf reports, at least two Saudi clubs are eyeing Tau. Al-Shabab and Al-Khoolod are reportedly interested, with the latter even submitting a “verbal offer” to secure his services. Al-Khoolod, newly promoted to the Saudi Pro League, sees Tau as a valuable addition to strengthen their squad. Additionally, Al Wehda is also contemplating making a move for the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Brighton & Hove Albion winger.

Contractual situation and club’s stance

While Kaizer Chiefs potential target Tau’s contract with Al Ahly runs until 2025, speculations about his future continue to swirl. Al Ahly may consider cashing in on him to avoid losing him on a free transfer. However, sources close to the club, including president Mahmoud El Khatib, indicate a strong determination to retain Tau despite external interest. This commitment underscores Al Ahly’s belief in Tau’s abilities and his crucial role in the team’s future plans.

Since joining Al Ahly in 2021 under coach Pitso Mosimane, Tau has made 106 appearances for the Club of the Century, scoring 25 goals and providing 13 assists. His contributions have been instrumental in Al Ahly’s success, including back-to-back CAF Champions League titles.

Sithebe’s departure from Kaizer Chiefs

In other news, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siyethemba Sithebe has confirmed his departure after being informed that he is not in the club’s plans for the upcoming season. Sithebe, 31, joined Chiefs in July 2022 from AmaZulu as a free agent but struggled to meet expectations during his tenure. He expressed gratitude to the Khosi nation on Instagram while wishing the club success in the future.

As Tau’s future remains uncertain amidst Gulf interest, the ongoing discussions between Al Ahly’s management and Tau’s representatives about a contract extension underscore the mutual desire to prolong his stay at the club. Former Orlando Pirates trainer has drawn Middle East interest https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/former-orlando-pirates-trainer-has-drawn-middle-east-interest/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 12:32:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2124338 Former Orlando Pirates trainer and invincible coach has drawn Middle East attention. Josef Zinnbauer’s hot streak in Morocco has not gone unnoticed. What’s next for the unbeatable coach? Let’s delve in and find out.

Zinnbauer is reportedly a hot commodity in the Middle East after his historic undefeated season with Raja Club Athletic in the 2023/24 campaign. Zinnbauer achieved an unprecedented feat by guiding Raja to their first-ever undefeated season in Botola Pro Inwi history. Leading from the front, his team clinched the league title for the first time in four years. Boasting a record-breaking points tally of 72 points, with 21 wins and 9 draws.

Interest from Middle Eastern clubs

Zinnbauer’s stellar performance in his debut full season in the Moroccan top flight has sparked interest from clubs across the Middle East. According to Moroccan reports, clubs in the Saudi Pro League, Egyptian Premier League, and Persian Gulf UAE Pro League are eager to lure him away from the Green Eagles before the 2024/25 season kicks off.

Focus on domestic success

Despite lucrative offers from abroad, Zinnbauer remains focused on securing the domestic double with Raja. The German tactician is preparing his squad for the Throne Cup semi-final against Mouloudia d’Oujda next Tuesday. Sources suggest that Zinnbauer will only make a decision on his future with Raja after their cup campaign concludes.

Club’s desire to retain Zinnbauer

Club president Mohamed Boudrika is keen to retain Zinnbauer as Raja prepares to return to the CAF Champions League. However, Zinnbauer’s decision at the end of the season remains uncertain, highlighting the allure of potential new challenges.

Josef Zinnbauer’s outstanding season culminated in him being named Coach of the Season in the Botola Pro League. His leadership saw Raja secure the league title, edging out the competition and setting new benchmarks in the club’s history. Alongside assistants Fadlu Davids and Darian Wilken, Zinnbauer’s tactical prowess has reshaped Raja’s performance, with the team losing only one game out of 39 under his guidance.

The former Orlando Pirates trainer Josef Zinnbauer’s journey with Raja Club Athletic has been nothing short of remarkable. Which was marked by unprecedented achievements and accolades. As speculation swirls around his future amid international interest. Zinnbauer’s focus remains on achieving further success in Morocco. Fans and pundits alike await the outcome of Raja’s cup campaign and Zinnbauer’s decision, poised for potential new milestones in his coaching career.

‘Al Ahly was at a higher level with Pitso Mosimane’ Salah https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/al-ahly-was-at-a-higher-level-with-pitso-mosimane-salah/ Wed, 29 May 2024 17:16:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2106650 Former Al Ahly midfielder Walid Salah Eldin believes Pitso Mosimane has been a better coach at the Red Devils than the current coach.

After eight successful years with Mamelodi Sundowns, Mosimane left the Tshwane giants to join Al Ahly in 2020. During his time with the Egyptian giants, ‘Jingles’ won five major titles. He left for Saudi Arabia in 2022 and Marcel Koller took over the reigns. The German coach has won two CAF Champions League trophies so far and three Egyptian Super Cups.

Salah though, says Pitso was creative and took Al Ahly to another level.

“From my point of view, Al Ahly was providing a better level with Mosimane,” he told DMC.

“Koller is a distinguished coach, and he won many championships with Al Ahly, but the South African coach was the most creative,” Salah said.

Pitso Mosimane compared to the new Al Ahly coach

The Red Devils recently won yet another CAF Champions League this past weekend beating Esperance 1-0 on aggregate. Despite their CAF success, Al Ahly are eight in the Egyptian Premier League 20 points behind leaders Pyramids. Koller’s team though have seven games in hand and could cut the lead to the top very soon.

Since leaving Al Ahly in 2022, Pitso Mosimane has coached in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The 59-year-old was recently in the books of Abha but failed to help the club survive relegation in the Saudi Pro League. Jingles has been heavily linked with a return to South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs being a club that’s interested in his services.

Jingles leaves Saudi after five months

Mosimane has helped Sundowns and Al Ahly to three Champions League triumphs in the past eight years. Amakhosi are hoping Jingles can finally end their nine-year trophyless seasons if he gets the job.

Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena still reeling from CAFCL exit https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/sundowns-coach-rulani-mokwena-still-reeling-from-cafcl-exit/ Tue, 07 May 2024 14:39:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2088602 Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has admitted that he’s still reeling from his team’s CAF Champions League exit.

The Brazilians were ousted by Esperance de Tunis 2-0 on aggregate and thus failed to make it to the final.

The positive side of all that, though, is that Sundowns managed to qualify for the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

And while, under Mokwena’s tutelage, Sundowns have already won a double – the DStv Premiership title and the African Football League – the 37-year-old is still hurt by the loss to Esperance.

He believes Sundowns did all they could to reach the final and possibly win it for the first time since 2016 under Pitso Mosimane.

However, Mokwena feels he let the club and everybody surrounding the Sundowns down by failing to win this year’s CAF Champions League.

Furthermore, the possibility of finishing the league season unbeaten, having already secured the title, doesn’t excite Mokwena at all.

Well, at least for now, since their CAF Champions League wound is still fresh. If Sundowns finish the season unbeaten, they will make history in PSL football.

As things stand, Sundowns have won 19 and drawn just five of their 24 league games. They are on 62 points.

SUNDOWNS MENTOR RULANI STILL NOT HEALED

“No, I’m still reeling, and I’m talking personally. I am still reeling. Someone tried to console me and said, ‘You’ve got a double already – the AFL and the League title, so why are you still reeling?’ But I’m reeling,” said Mokwena, as per SABC Sport.

“I must say to you, I feel like I’ve let the club down; I feel like I’ve let the supporters down; I feel like I’ve let this group down because it’s my job to lead, and when we fail, it’s my job to stand in front and assume the responsibility.”

“So, I don’t think it will make up for it. We deserved to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League; based on the performance of the semi-final second leg, I think we did enough to give ourselves a chance to be in the final.”

“Eventually, we will win the Champions League, but we’ve got to continue and persist because it’s not an easy competition to win, and you’ve seen it – it was only myself and [Al Ahly coach Marcel] Kohler in the semi-finals back-to-back, no other coach was there,” he continued.

“And then, for the first time we did a back-to-back semi-final appearance where [the likes of] Wydad, Al Ahly, Esperance have been doing six or seven in a row.”

TREBLE STILL POSSIBLE YOUNG MENTOR

Meanwhile, Mokwena can still win a treble with Sundowns this season after guiding his charges to the Nedbank Cup final.

The Tshwane giants will face defending champions Orlando Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on 1 June.

‘Shalulile is finished’ fans react after Sundowns CAF exit https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/shalulile-is-finished-fans-react-after-sundowns-caf-exit/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 21:22:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2079754 Mamelodi Sundowns’ forward Peter Shalulile received heavy criticism from fans following the club’s exit from the CAF Champions League semi-final on Friday evening.

Bafana Ba Style suffered a 1-0 defeat to Esperance at Loftus Versfeld which saw them go down 2-0 on aggregate.

Sundowns displayed a poor performance in Tunisia last weekend, going down 1-0. Mokwena’s side was expected to come out blazing at a packed Loftus on Friday. Masandawana started positively but failed to find the net, with Shalulile missing numerous chances.

Peter Shalulile fires blanks as Sundowns exit CAF

The 30-year-old Namibian striker had several opportunities to score in the first and second half but failed to hit the back of the net. It has been a dreadful season for the Downs striker, who has only netted four league goals this campaign.

Shalulile was eventually substituted late in the second half as Sundowns chased the match. “

@TwananoZA wrote: “A night to forget for Shalulile. Missed few clear chances.”

@EarthlingExe wrote: “That chance for Shalulile was supposed to be a goal no ways😭What a miss.”

Sundowns are playing so well but lacking precision and composure on the box. Shalulile has had a million chances for instance, tweeted @TakuraChamuka.

Sundowns fans blame Shalulile.

@Mgazi_Omponjwan wrote: “Lol there’s no way they gonna score 3 goals with Shalulile upfront

@Lord_Syclonic wrote: “Shalulile can pack his bags, I think it’s safe to move away from him now.

This week, former Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego defended the misfiring Shalulile.

“With strikers, you can see he hasn’t been scoring but are people that are supposed to provide for him helping him?” Mashego asked.

“It’s good and well to say a striker is not scoring but if he’s not missing chances then it’s a different scenario because Shalulile is not missing chances. If he was missing then it would have been something else but he’s not getting chances. I don’t want to say there’s no supply but he’s not missing chances that’s why he’s not scoring.”

The two African giants face off in the second leg semi-final of the CAF Champions League at the Loftus Versefeld. Esperance won the first leg 1-0 in Tunisia last weekend.

DJ Khaled, who is part of the Roc Nation, has backed the Pretoria team Sundowns to emerge victorious. This is not the first time the 48-year-old has shown love to Masandawana. Last year, the DJ posted a video to congratulate them on their sixth successive PSL title.

“Sundowns, that’s right Sundowns, bless up, be great in the semi-finals. I was going to say good luck, nah nah, be great, that’s right, let’s go,” DJ Khaled said in a video.

Former star says Sundowns have earned right to be called African giants https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/former-star-says-sundowns-have-earned-right-to-be-called-african-giants/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 13:51:08 +0000 http://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=839647 Former Cameroon and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alain Amougou has sounded off on whether Masandawana should be considered ‘African Giants’.

Amougou believes that the defeat of TP Mazembe on Tuesday reinforces their place among the continent’s elite teams.

Sundowns are African Giants

The quality of the Downs squad and the football the play has man feeling the deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Esperance, Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly as continental heavyweights.

Kabo Yellow are the only team in the Caf Champions League sporting a perfect group stage record after four games. The Brazilians join Tanzanian superclub Simba, Wydad and Esperance in topping their Caf Champions League groups with two rounds of football to go and look like genuine contenders for continental glory.

“Sundowns have now earned the respect of everyone on the continent because their results speak for them,” Amougou told KickOff.com.

Despite winning just one continental trophy to date the Tshwane club have become a household name across Africa.

“You earn respect by winning matches and winning trophies. I have been following Sundowns and even last night I watched the game, and this Sundowns team is doing better than us when I was at Sundowns at Sundowns [1999-2002].

“We lost in the final of the Champions League, but this group won the trophy in 2016 so how can they not be better than us? They have won everything that we won and even added more trophies. I wish I knew why they are doing so well but unfortunately, I am not inside and can only say what I see from a distance.

“What is without doubt is how much respect they have from all of us even here in Cameroon – a country that has given Sundowns great players like Roger Feutmba and Thomas Libiih. So, the first respect is that they know Sundowns from these players and now that Sundowns is doing well in Africa, everybody knows about them.

“Results are talking for Sundowns and there is no need to analyse. They are a good example in Africa because they hire from everywhere and are not suffering financially. The owner [Patrice Motsepe] is now the president of CAF so that tells you how much of an impact Sundowns have made on the continent.

“Sundowns have inspired many on the continent and they are known better in Africa than all South African clubs. There is no one who doesn’t know Sundowns today in Africa,” Amougou concluded.

Rulani asks for four years to try and win CAFCL trophy at Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/rulani-asks-for-four-years-to-try-win-cafcl-trophy-at-sundowns/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 11:27:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2078292 Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has asked for four years to try and win the CAF Champions League for the team.

Mokwena was speaking to the media, as per SowetanLIVE, following Sundowns’ 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United on Tuesday.

With the perception that Sundowns should easily win the CAF Champions League given their expensive quality squad, Mokwena has a different view.

The 37-year-old mentor said it wasn’t even easy for Pitso Mosimane to win the continental trophy with Sundowns as it took him four years to achieve that mandate.

Mosimane had arrived at Sundowns in 2012 but he only delivered the CAF Champions League trophy in 2016.

Mokwena feel fans sometimes don’t understand Champions League football when they criticise the Sundowns team if they don’t reach the final let alone win it.

PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – RULANI

“I have the feeling that we don’t understand the Champions League. I look at the Champions League with a different perspective because I have been here before,” said Mokwena.

“I was an assistant coach to the previous coach [Pitso Mosimane] for a very long time and the last coach was here for eight years. He had eight years [four from 2012 to 2016] to try and win the Champions League and we only won the competition once [2016].

“We only played the semi-final two times because the other time, we got into the final. But after that, in eight years, we only played the semi-final once and lost.

“This is my second season and we’ve done back-to-back semi-finals already and sometimes I have that feeling that people don’t appreciate that because of how they perceive the expectations.”

MOKWENA PLEADS FOR FOUR YEARS FROM SUNDOWNS FANS

Mokwena further suggested that people shouldn’t hammer him if Sundowns fail to win this year’s CAF Champions League, and asked for four years to try and win it.

He said that as Sundowns prepare to take on Esperance de Tunis in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday night.

Kick-off is at 20:00.

Esperance lead Sundowns 1-0 from the first leg, meaning Mokwena’s charges need to win by a two-goal margin to advance to the final.

“If you look at the profile of the teams in the Champions League, there are 21 titles among the last four. Al Ahly with 11, TP Mazembe with five, Esperance with four and then Sundowns with one,” continued Mokwena.

“Now, what gives us the right to think it’s just going to be a walk in the park and win the competition? We have to work hard for it. I got a four-year contract here and all I’m asking for from the Sundowns fans is give me four years to try and win.

“I’m not asking for eight. Give me four years to try and win the Champions League. It’s going to happen. It’s not going to be easy. It’s not going to be a win all the time,” he concluded.

‘Give me four years to win Champions League’ – Rulani Mokwena https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/give-me-four-years-to-win-champions-league-rulani-mokwena/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 16:35:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2077532 Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena believes he still has four more years to the CAF Champions League.

Despite winning the DStv Premiership three times in a row, the 37-year-old is yet to reach a Champions League final. Under Pitso Mosimane, the Brazilians managed to win the title in his fourth year in charge. At the time, Mokwena was his assistant alongside Manqoba Mngqithi.

Having lost to Esperance in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, Rulani Mokwena has to inspire his team. A win by two clear goals will see Masandawana reach their first CAF final in eight years.

“I have the feeling that we don’t understand the Champions League. I look at the Champions League with a different perspective because I have been here before,” Mokwena said as per Sowetan Live.

Rulani Mokwena confident he can win Champions League

“I was an assistant coach to the previous coach [Pitso Mosimane] for a very long time and the last coach was here for eight years. He had eight years to try and win the Champions League and we only won the competition once.”

Mokwena has extended his stay with Sundowns for another four years, giving him several chances to win the Champions League.

“Now, what gives us the right to think it’s just going to be a walk in the park and win the competition? We have to work hard for it,” he said.

“I got a four-year contract here and all I’m asking for from the Sundowns fans is give me four years to try and win.

“I’m not asking for eight. Give me four years to try and win the Champions League. It’s going to happen,” Mokwena added. It’s not going to be easy. It is not going to be a win all the time.”

Downs have Esperance to deal with on Friday

Fans have often criticised Mokwena for failing to win the Champions League since taking over as head coach. The 37-year-old has never passed the semi-finals and could bow out in the same stage this campaign.

Percy Tau might only return to Sundowns under ONE condition https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/percy-tau-might-only-return-to-sundowns-under-one-condition/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 13:02:14 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2076108 Al Ahly forward Percy Tau has been rumoured with a return to Mamelodi Sundowns for months.

The 29-year-old Bafana Bafana star is currently in his last season with the Red Devils. The Egyptian giants, however, appear to be very keen to extend his stay.

Despite Sundowns, Percy Tau is also linked to a move to Al Ahly rivals Zamalek.

“Zamalek has done well in the transfer period by signing quality midfielders. If there are more signings in the summer, Zamalek will return to its natural strength and compete for all the trophies,” Zamalek legend Ahmed Mido was quoted on Kingfut.

Tau might opt to stay at Al Ahly and not return to Sundowns

“I hope Percy Tau joins Zamalek. The Zamalek board should fight to sign him because his contract with Al Ahly is nearing its end.”

Tau left Sundowns as a Champions League winner and added more titles since joining the Red Devils in 2021. A move to Zamalek is highly unlikely given where the club is compared to their main rival. A move back to Chloorkop might happen only if the star feels the need to return home.

Percy Tau might still have the desire to move back to Europe. The 29-year-old failed to impress during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year and might look at the Club World Cup as his chance to redeem himself. If Sundowns wins the CAF Champions League, Tau might fancy a move back to PSL, but only if.

Lion of Judah might still have dreams of returning to Europe

Should the Red Devils retain the Champions League, chances are the “Lion of Judah” will also stay and compete in the Club World Cup. The Bafana star is one of the team’s highest-paid players, so if he is to leave, Downs needs to pay.

Tau is likely to stay for another year or two and if he doesn’t return to Sundowns, he might play football in the Middle East.

Not good enough? Sundowns legend says Lorch has not impressed https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/not-good-enough-sundowns-legend-says-lorch-has-not-impressed/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 05:40:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2075462 Thembinkosi Lorch’s performance against Esperance on Saturday did not please Mamelodi Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana.

The 2016 CAF Champions League winner blasted the ex-Orlando Pirates star for his poor contribution in Tunisia during the first leg of the semi-final. Downs were beaten 1-0 by the Tunisian giants and go into the second leg needing a win.

Despite the loss, the Tshwane team missed several missed opportunities throughout the match. Lorch was guilty of missing a big opportunity as well which would have brought his team level.

Kekana believes Lorch has underperformed since joining Sundowns in January.

“If you recall, Lorch got the same chance against Yanga, where he missed from there,” he said on SABC Sport.

“Against Swallows, he got a chance and missed again. I’m counting all these chances because I don’t think he’s confident enough in front of goal since he joined Mamelodi Sundowns.

Kekana feels Lorch is underperforming for Sundowns

“He’s got two goals and that’s not good enough for a player like Lorch,” Kekana concluded.

Thembinkosi Lorch scored his first goal for Sundowns during a 2-0 win over FC Nouadhibou in a Champions League match. The ex-Orlando Pirates winger rounded the goalkeeper to score his first goal for Masandawana in February.

The ex-Bafana Bafana star appeared to have found his feet at the club in his first six matches but has since struggled. With Sundowns looking to win their second Champions League, Rulani Mokwena has entrusted Lorch to play a vital role. The 30-year-old has yet to produce the form that made him a Pirates fan-favourite.

Rulani Mokwena argues Esperance parked the bus https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/rulani-mokwena-argues-esperance-parked-the-bus/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 17:13:17 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2075178 Mamelodi Sundowns Rulani Mokwena insists his side were the better team despite going down 1-0 to Esperance on Saturday.

Masandawana suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Esperance Sportive de Tunis in their first-leg semi-final of the CAF Champions League in Tunisia. Despite Masandawana having 60% of the ball possession, they failed to create clear goal-scoring chances.

The home side created a few chances but made it count when it mattered. Brazilian attacker Yan Sasse managed to get the ball past Ronwen Williams in the 41st minute after a lovely through ball.

Rulani Mokwena’s side tried to get back into the game in the second half but Esperance remained solid at the back. The Downs coach said after the match that his side were not inferior tactically.

“I don’t agree that Esperance tactically won, no, I fully disagree. I think in football there are two important things during the 90 minutes,” said Rulani Mokwena.

“The first thing is, how many chances are you able to create and who created the most chances today? Please that’s a question you must answer, who created the most chances between Sundowns and Esperance? Did we concede more chances to them or did Esperance concede more chances? How do you defend well if you give away more chances than the opposition?

Speaking to the media in Tunisia, Rulani Mokwena argued that the home team Esperance ‘parked the bus’ at home.

“In fact I would like to ask you guys [media], and this is you as Tunisian media, how many times do you see Esperance parking the bus at home and are you guys happy to see one of your biggest clubs in this country, playing Mamelodi Sundowns and parking the bus?

Rulani Mokwena says his side were better than Esperance

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo questioned Mokwena’s tactics.

“This is a true reflection in terms of how disciplined Esperance were, because they allowed Sundowns to have touches in their own half, they were not hurting them,” he said on SABC Sport.

“In football language, we would’ve said it was a high-school game that Sundowns showed because they didn’t hurt them.

“Sundowns made Esperance look good because they played to their strengths.

Doctor Khumalo questions Mokwena’s tactics after Esperance loss https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/doctor-khumalo-questions-mokwenas-tactics-after-esperance-loss/ Sun, 21 Apr 2024 14:25:53 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2074177 Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has questioned Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach Rulani Mokwena’s tactics after their 1-0 loss to Esperance.

The Brazilians suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Esperance Sportive de Tunis in their first-leg semi-final of the CAF Champions League. Despite Masandawana having 60% of the ball possession, they failed to create clear goal-scoring chances.

Doctor Khumalo believes Mokwena’s gameplan against the Tunisian giants was not spot on.

Doctor Khumalo has a go at Rulani Mokwena

“They were expecting Sundowns to be that team that comes with a lot of combinational play, that doesn’t hurt them, it doesn’t do anything. So it doesn’t look good.

“But as soon as they changed gear, Sundowns to fifth gear, you could see Esperance breaking at the back.

“But now you ask yourself how is Rulani playing a [Thapelo] Maseko in this temperamental game,” Khumalo added as per iDiski Times. “He hasn’t played much in the PSL, now he brings him in this [game] and they are trailing, they are chasing the game.”

Sundowns under pressure after defeat to Esperance

Doctor Khumalo said Mokwena needs to develop a better game plan if Sundowns are to progress to the final.

“It’s difficult to predict because they’re just leading 1-0,” he added.

“If only Rulani would come up with a better plan because he’s stuck on fourth gear. He needs to get to fifth gear. That fifth gear is the one that will take Sundowns to the final,” Doctor Khumalo on Mokwena.

Tunisia’s Ligue 1 game was a warm up for this Saturday’s Caf Champions League clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. The Tunisians will host the semifinal, first-leg encounter. The reverse match is scheduled for Pretoria on April 26, 2024.

Why Esperance needed to impress at home

Esperance needed to impress ahead of the big assignment against Sundowns. And all seemed well when the visitors scored first through Rodrigues in the 37th minute. However, Salem Bizid of Monastir canceled out the slender lead with a 97th-minute strike at Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet. The equaliser frustrated Cardoso.

What Esperance coach said ahead of Sundowns match

Cardoso’s team still leads the standings, six points ahead of the second-placed Monastir in the D4 stream of the Tunisia Ligue 1 Play-offs. However, the coach was not amused with how his wards failed to kill off the away match. “It is our first draw in the league,” the Portuguese mentor told his club’s website. “Of course, it is, obviously, not what we wanted. We missed our start to the match, but then we reacted and took the lead. Unfortunately, we were punished with a goal in the last minute due to a marking error. That’s football. You have to respect the adversary to the end.”

Cardoso has since warned Esperance to up their game ahead of the duel against the DStv Premiership heavyweights. He specifically called for improvements in marking. “We will correct our mistakes as part of our preparation for this match. The technical staff is already hard at work and we will be ready on the D-day,” he told Esperance website.

Where will the match take place?

The semifinal match will take place at Rades Stadium on Saturday at 8:00pm North Africa time. Broadcasters such as beINSports channel 6 will beam the game.

Who will officiate Esperance v Sundowns match?

Youthful referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will take charge of the match. The 30-year-old made history after becoming the first whistle-man from Somalia to officiate at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Liban Abdoulrazac Ahmed from Djibouti is the first assistant referee for the game. The reserve referee for the match will be Bamlak Tessema Weyesa. Video assistant referee team comprises Rivet Maria Pakuita Cinquela and Lahlou Benbraham.

How the Tunisians booked their semifinal place

The Tunisians booked their semifinal slot after seeing off Asec Mimosa 4-2 on post-match penalties the previous week in Ivory Coast. On the other hand, the South Africans sneaked past Young Africans (Yanga SC) of Tanzania also via penalties. On Monday, Sundowns warmed up for the Champions League game with a two-all draw against Moroka Swallows.

Rulani Mokwena’s conversation with Yanga star revealed https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/young-africans-sports-club-yanga-star-stephane-aziz-kl-has-revealed-the-piece-of-advice-he-received-from-rulani-mokwena/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 14:29:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2063816 Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga) star Stephane Aziz Kl has revealed the piece of advice he received from Rulani Mokwena. The midfielder told Tanzania’s The Citizen newspaper that he chatted with the Mamelodi Sundowns coach during the Caf Champions League quarterfinal matches.

After the game, Rulani Mokwena said…

According to www.thecitizen.co.tz, the player said: “Rulani told me to improve my playing and I did it during the return leg in South Africa where he commended me for that.” The attacker made the remarks while setting the record straight on his future with the Tanzania Premier League outfit. Apart from Aziz KI, media reports in South Africa have also linked PSL teams such as Orlando Pirates with other Yanga players.

Aziz KI commented on his interaction with Rulani Mokwena amid rumours that he would join Sundowns. The player’s future has been a subject of transfer speculation in the East African country. Reports have linked him with a switch to Sundowns this June transfer window when his contract with Yanga expires.

Is Rulani Mokwena interested in Yanga star?

Despite such reported Rulani Mokwena’s interest, the player has pledged his loyalty to Yanga. He is quoted saying: “I have no expectations of leaving Yanga at the moment because I have not achieved the goals that brought me here. This club, which I love with all my heart, still owes me. Even money cannot fill the love I have for this club.”

The Burkinabe player signed for the Dar es Salaam-based club in the 2022/2023 season from Asec Mimosa in Ivory Coast. He has since established himself as a household name in Tanzania. Little wonder, his performance swayed Rulani Mokwena who has a sharp eye for talent. The Sundowns boss courted controversy after appearing to talk to a player for Yanga on Friday. A video clip has gone viral of the visitors’ official pushing the hosts coach at Loftus Versfeld Stadium after the game. However, the player in that video is not Aziz KI. Nonetheless, he remains the subject of interest from other teams.

Aziz KI at the centre of VAR controversy

Such rumours follow Aziz KI’s five-star performance in the Caf Champions League’s two-legged quarterfinal matches. Yanga held Rulani Mokwena’s side 0-0 in the first leg the previous week. Last Friday, the reverse fixture also ended goalless before going into post-match penalties in Pretoria. Eventually, the DStv Premiership giants sailed through after winning 4-2.

The second-leg game was not without drama. It was marred by refereeing controversy. It all started when video assistant referees ignored what Yanga felt was a goal when Aziz KI’s shot bounced off the goal-line. However, Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida, on VAR’s advice, felt the ball had not crossed the line.

Why Yanga lodged a complaint to Caf

The Tanzanians have since lodged a complaint to the Confederation of African Football accusing the officiating personnel of incompetent officiation. Caf is yet to respond to Yanga’s complaint.

R1 Billion on the line for Mamelodi Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/mamelodi-sundowns-caf-cahmpions-league-glory/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 12:32:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2062617 The CAF Champions League hangs on a knife edge for Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest of Africa’s elite. Here’s what’s at stake.

Sundowns gunning for the prize they want most

Mamelodi Sundowns now monopolize the DStv Premiership title, but it’s the CAF Champions League crown they want the most now. They haven’t lifted Africa’s Premier Club competition since 2016 under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane. It was their first and only successful campaign in this tournament. Since then, they’ve become hell-bent on holding the trophy aloft again.

Huge money and bragging rights on the line for Sundowns

On Friday 19 April, Sundowns face ES Tunis in the first leg of this season’s semi-finals. Only one opponent stands between them and the showpiece CAF Champions League final. Downs made life difficult for themselves in the quarter-finals, slugging out two 0-0 draw with Young Africans and eventually dispatching the Tanzanians 3-2 on penalties after 210 minutes with no goals. If Rulani Mokwena’s men get past ES Tunis, they’ll face either Al Ahly or TP Mazembe in the final. If the Brazilians go all the way and win the title, they’ll earn automatic qualification to next season’s Club World Cup final. That is a prestigious achievement in itself, but it also comes with an accompanying cheque of R1 Billion according to SoccerLaduma. The two semi-final legs are contested on 19 and 26 April. The two legs of the final will be staged on 19 and 26 May.

Rulani has luxuries aplenty

Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena not only has a huge and talented squad from which to select his matchday squads, but he’s also pretty much got the local title in the bag already. This affords him the option of resting players’ legs and wrapping them in cotton wool for league encounters to keep them fresh for Champions League challenges on the horizon.

AL NASSR RIP PITSO MOSIMANE AND ABHA APART

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick at the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium as Al Nassr inflicted Pitso’s heaviest defeat of his managerial career. With eight games to go, this result leaves Abha short of confidence in what will be a tough scrap to avoid relegation from the Saudi Pro League. Liverpool and Senegal legend Sadio Mane also got in on the act with a goal of his own in the crushing 8-0 rout. Abha did, however, respond with a crucial win against Al Fateh to climb out of the relegation zone.

65 HAT-TRICKS AND COUNTING FOR CR7

Cristiano Ronaldo has made a habit out of taking match balls home. This was his 65th career treble. This season, the Portuguese icon has scored 29 goals and provided 11 assists in 24 Saudi Pro League games. That’s 1.67 direct goal contributions every single game.

What Sundowns now need to qualify for FIFA Club World Cup… https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/what-sundowns-now-need-to-qualify-for-fifa-club-world-cup/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 07:08:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2063093 It’s common knowledge now that Mamelodi Sundowns are through to the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League after beating Young Africans last weekend.

The Brazilians needed penalties to knock Yanga out following two goalless draws away and at home.

Now, Sundowns went into that encounter against Yanga knowing that they stood a good chance of qualifying for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

They needed Esperance to lose their quarter-final match in order to qualify for the expanded global club tournament.

However, Esperance won to set up a date with Sundowns in the semi-finals.

PERMUTATIONS: WHAT SUNDOWNS NEED TO QUALIFY FOR CLUB WORLD CUP

There is a new twist to the permutations of qualifying for the 32-team tournament, and Sundowns need to work hard.

  • Sundowns will qualify if they reach the final/win the title, or if the final is Esperance/Ahly.
  • Esperance will qualify if they reach the final/win the title or if the final is Sundowns/Ahly.
  • TP Mazembe will qualify only if they win the title.

In the event that TP Mazembe win the Caf Champions League title and automatically qualify for the Club World Cup with Sundowns having crashed in the semis, then the Lubumbashi-based outfit would be joined by Esperance.

Africa will be represented by four teams at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, and two clubs in Al Ahly and Wydad have already qualified.

And that’s because they lifted the Caf Champions League in the last three years, and therefore, are ranked higher than the rest.

R1 BILLION BONANZA UP FOR GRABS

It has been confirmed that every participant at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will receive R1 billion each for qualifying.

And Sundowns will undoubtedly want to be among those that will get the money to further strengthen their financial muscles.

Winning the Caf Champions League, though, remains their mandate and that of Rhulani Mokwena given the resources available to him.

Sundowns last won the Caf Champions League in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane.

Esperance de Tunis coach warns players to brace for Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/esperance-de-tunis-coach-miguel-cardoso-has-reacted-to-the-forthcoming-caf-champions-league-semifinal-contest-with-mamelodi-sundowns/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 08:25:11 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2061371 Esperance de Tunis coach Miguel Cardoso has reacted to the forthcoming Caf Champions League semifinal contest with Mamelodi Sundowns. The Portuguese mentor has warned his wards to brace up for a different ball game with the DStv Premiership side. He made the remarks after qualifying for the last-four stage.

Sang et Or, as Esperance de Tunis are also called, made it after seeing off Asec Mimosa 4-2 on post-match penalties on Saturday evening. In a post-match interview with his club’s website Cardoso said: “The work continues. Be ready to face Sundowns in two weeks. It will be a different story, but we are confident in our abilities.” The website adds that the semifinal match “will be a duel of titans between two of the best teams on the continent.”

Esperance de Tunis mentor’s warning

The Tunisians booked their semifinal slot after seeing off Asec Mimosa 4-2 on post-match penalties in Ivory Coast on Saturday evening. In regulation time, Esperance de Tunis had held the Ivorians to a barren draw on home soil in the quarterfinal, second-leg game. Now, they await Rulani Mokwena‘s men on the weekend of April 19, 2024, in the first-leg match. The reverse fixture is scheduled for April 26, 2024.

What statistics say about Esperance de Tunis

It was a cagey affair between Esperance de Tunis and Asec Mimosa. The visitors held a slight lion’s share of possession at 55 percent. Each team managed one shot on target from three attempts for Cardoso’s charges and two for Asec Mimosa. The two clubs had two corner kicks apiece. The Tunisians completed 431 passes against 366 for the Ivorians who adopted a defensive approach while hoping to get over the line. However, the post-match penalties decided otherwise. The North Africans’ goalkeeper Mummiche was the hero after he saved two penalties to ensure a date with the African Football League champions.

Sundowns’ VAR controversy

The first-leg played in Tunisia last week had ended goalless. It was the same case with Sundowns who came from Tanzania with a 0-0 score. The reverse fixture, too, ended 0-0 but it was marred by refereeing controversy after video assistant referees ignored what Yanga SC felt was a goal when Aziz Ki’s shot bounced off the goal line.

However, Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida, on VAR’s advice, felt the ball did not cross the line. The hosts went on to win the resultant post-match penalties, with Ronwen Williams again producing heroics. The Tanzanians have since lodged a complaint to the Confederation of African Football, accusing the officiating personnel of incompetent officiation. Nonetheless, Sundowns will proceed to take on Esperance de Tunis.

Percy Tau’s Al Ahly make it too

Elsewhere, Percy Tau’s Al Ahly secured a semifinal berth after beating Simba SC of Tanzania 1-0 on Friday evening and 2-0 on aggregate. The result saw the Caf Champions League holders completing a double over the East Africans. The Marcel Koller’s side had won the away game by a similar margin. The Egyptians now face TP Mazembe in the semifinals. The Congolese side pulled off a great upset for this edition of the continental league. They beat Petro de Luanda 2-1 on Saturday.  The Angolans thought they were almost in the promised land after coming back from Lubumbashi with a goalless draw. However, they were stunned at home when they succumbed to two second-half goals. It was the first time that the hosts’ keeper Hugo Marques had conceded in this edition of the tournament.

‘Feeling robbed is something every coach understands’ Rulani https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/feeling-robbed-is-something-every-coach-understands-rulani/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 18:29:40 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2061044 Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena sympathised with Young Africans after the Tanzanian giants were controversially knocked out of the CAF Champions League.

A dubious VAR decision stirred up a fiery debate among football fans after Yanga were denied a goal. Sundowns went on to win the quarter-final match in a penalty shoot-out at Loftus Stadium. However, the excitement was short-lived as Young Africans’ coach, Miguel Gamondi, accused the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) of robbing his team.

He expressed his frustration during a heated press conference, where he claimed that Aziz Ki’s goal attempt was wrongly disallowed, as the VAR ruled that it had not crossed the line.

Rulani Mokwena chose to maintain diplomatic restraint and did not pass any judgment on the controversial call.

“I can empathise with him, feeling robbed is something every coach can understand,” he said after the match. “However, I prefer to focus on commending our opponents rather than delving into that discourse.”

He continued, “There were several other incidents, like the potential penalty for the elbow on Divine Lunga inside the box. I refrain from dwelling on such matters; perhaps if we had faced defeat, my stance might differ.

“Yet, let me extend grace and respect in victory, acknowledging them as worthy adversaries, both at home and away,” Rulani concluded.

Gamondi felt his team were robbed and the club has lodged a ‘match-fixing’ complaint to CAF.

“Is there somebody here in this room who can tell me it was not a goal? Somebody must explain to me to why the referee didn’t go to (VAR) to check for himself, but he wants to check if there is a yellow card or red card.”

Rulani Mokwena and Mamelodi Sundowns are yet to comment about Yanga’s protest.

Yanga lodge official “match-fixing” protest after defeat to Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/yanga-lodge-official-match-fixing-protest-after-defeat-to-sundowns/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 17:21:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2060167 Yanga SC have officially complained to CAF following their Champions League defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday evening.

The Tanzanian giants are protesting over the contentious Video Assistant Referee(VAR) decision that denied them the opening game during the second leg match against Masandawana.

Sundowns defeated Yanga on penalties after it remained goalless after 180 minutes of play.

“We, the undersigned, representing Young Africans Sports Club hereby submit this contest in accordance with Rule XVI of the CAF Champions League Regulations as amended from time to time,” said a statement.

“The contest pertains to a possible administrative error and match-fixing incident during the quarter-final match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Young Africans Sports Club(Yanga) played on the 5th April 2024 at Tshwane-Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.”

Yanga ‘robbed’ after the Sundowns CAF match

1. Incident Description:

During the match, in the 57th minute, Young Africans Sports Club Player Aziz Ki Stephane (jersey no. 10) scored a clear goal which was denied by the entire team of referees led by Mr. Dahane Beida from Mauritania. Despite the availability of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, Mr. Beida and his team, including Mr. Daniel Ayi (Video Assistant Referee from Ghana) and Mr. Jerson Dos Santos (Assistant VAR from Angola), intentionally neglected to review the goal incident through VAR, thereby disregarding the principles of fair play and justice in football.

2. Allegations:

We allege that the aforementioned actions by the referee team indicate a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of the match in favor of Mamelodi Sundowns, constituting a serious case of match-fixing. This is further supported by the selective use of VAR, primarily focusing on fouls committed by Young Africans Sports Club(Yanga) for  potential red cards, while ignoring a legitimate goal-scoring opportunity.

Yanga SC run tp CAF after VAR drama

Remedial Actions Sought:

It is concerning that despite substantial investments in VAR technology, its role in ensuring fairness and accuracy in critical match decisions was not upheld. This incident raises questions about the integrity of refereeing standards and the effectiveness of VAR in upholding fair play principles in football competitions. We request a thorough investigation into this matter by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to uncover any evidence of administrative error or match-fixing. Such actions are detrimental to the spirit of the game and must be addressed promptly to maintain the credibility of football competitions under CAF.

“In light of the above, we urge CAF to take appropriate remedial actions, which may include but are not limited to Conducting a detailed review of the match footage and VAR records, Holding accountable any individuals found responsible for misconduct or negligence, Implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in future matches, as well as any other relief you may consider fair and appropriate to grant under Rule XVI (3) of CAF Champions League Regulations, as amended from time to time.

We remain committed to upholding the principles of fair play, transparency, and integrity in football, and trust that CAF will take decisive steps to address this matter and uphold the values of the sport.

After the game, Yanga head coach Miguel Gamondi said his team were robbed and the goal scored against Sundowns should have counted.

‘We was robbed’ Yanga coach felt Sundowns benefitted https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/we-was-robbed-yanga-coach-felt-sundowns-benefitted/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 13:08:07 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2060056 Young Africans(Yanga) coach Miguel Gamondi felt his team were robbed against Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday evening at the Loftus Versfeld.

Gamondi said VAR operators denied his side a goal which would have seen them qualify for the CAF Champions League semifinal.

The match finished 0-0 in both legs which meant a penalty shootout was needed to separate the two sides. Mamelodi Sundowns edged Yanga 3-2 at the end of the night.

“I don’t want to talk any more because I think everybody saw what happened here,” said Gamondi.

“Is there somebody here in this room who can tell me it was not a goal? Somebody must explain to me to why the referee didn’t go to (VAR) to check for himself, but he wants to check if there is a yellow card or red card.

Yanga coach questions ref decisions after Sundowns loss

“It is suspicious at least, if you want to defend the credibility of African football, it starts from that. Win the game and there is no problem, but win it clear.”

Mokwena said he was happy Sundowns reached the semis but also sympathised with Yanga coach.

“I can’t find words to appease him [Gamondi]; of course, the feeling of being robbed for any other coach [is not nice]. I would rather on my side be extremely complementary to the opposition instead of taking that direction,” Mokwena said.

“There were a lot of other situations, like a foul with an elbow on Devine Lunga inside the box, and that could have been a penalty.

“But I don’t wanna talk about those things. Maybe if I had lost, I would also take that direction, but let me be gracious and respectful in victory. They [Yanga] were a worthy opponent, a good side, one that we enjoyed playing against home and away,” said the Sundowns coach.

Ronwen Williams the hero as Mamelodi Sundowns scrape in CAF CL semis https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/ronwen-williams-the-hero-as-mamelodi-sundowns-scrape-in-caf-champions-league-semis-result/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 05:24:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2059814 South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams once again became a penalty shootout hero as his club, Mamelodi Sundowns, scraped into the CAF Champions League semi-finals on Friday.

Mamelodi Sundowns edged Tanzanian outfit Young Africans 3-2 in the penalty shootout in Pretoria after the second leg of the quarter-final ended 0-0, as did the first leg in Dar es Salaam last weekend.

A disappointing night for Tanzania saw Simba also bow out.

They lost 2-0 to title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt in Cairo and were eliminated 3-0 on aggregate.

Amr el Solia scored his first goal of the African campaign on 47 minutes for Ahly. Mahmoud Kahraba added a second from an added-time penalty.

Unimpressive Masandawana were fortunate to book a last-four showdown with ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast or Esperance of Tunisia after Young Africans twice came close to winning.

Williams saved four penalties for his country in an Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) quarter-final shootout victory over Cape Verde in Ivory Coast two months ago.

His penalty shot-stopping ability came to the fore again as he saved kicks from Stephane Aziz Ki and Dickson Job.

With Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 ahead in the shootout, Ibrahim Hamad fired the fifth Young Africans penalty over the bar and the South African side breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Chilean Marcelo Allende, Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro and Neo Maema were the successful penalty takers for Mamelodi Sundowns, who won the premier African club competition in 2016.

Constant threat

Mamelodi Sundowns dominated possession throughout the return match on a cool autumn night, but lacked imagination when attacking and rarely troubled Malian goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.

After a first half that produced only one shot on target, from Mamelodi Sundowns, Young Africans became more adventurous and the pace of Burkina Faso winger Ki posed a constant threat.

Ki thought he had given the east African club the lead on 59 minutes when his fierce shot from inside the area beat Ronwen Williams and rebounded off the underside of the bar.

While Young Africans believed the ball had crossed the goalline, the Mauritanian referee called for a VAR review, which ruled that the whole of the ball had not crossed the line.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ best chance fell to Thembinkosi Lorch

Ki later turned creator with his cross giving Clement Mzize a great chance to break the deadlock from close range, but the substitute blazed wide with only Williams to beat.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ best chance came late in the opening half when Thembinkosi Lorch found himself with only Diarra to beat, but his poorly placed kick was cleared off the feet of the goalkeeper.

Before ASEC face Esperance in Abidjan on Saturday, Petro Luanda of Angola will host TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both first legs ended goalless.

Goal or no goal? Young Africans feel robbed against Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/goal-or-no-goal-young-africans-feel-robbed-against-sundowns/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 20:55:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2059759 Tanzanian giants Young Africans felt robbed against Mamelodi Sundowns after they were denied a ‘goal’ in the Caf Champions League quarter-finals on Friday.

Drama ensued late in the game between Sundowns and Yanga after Aziz Ki’s powerful strike hit the underside of the crossbar and back into play.

And while the Tanzanians thought they had stolen victory, the legitimacy of the goal was checked via VAR.

The referee relied on his VAR colleagues to rule that the entire circumference of the ball had not crossed the goal line.

However, the majority of football fans across the African continent strongly believe that the ‘goal’ should have stood.

Had the referees ruled in favour of Yanga, it would have marked the end of Sundowns in this year’s Caf Champions League.

Sundowns went on to win the match 3-2 on penalties following a goalless draw after 90 minutes with hero Ronwen Williams saving two penalties.

This encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium was expected to produce fireworks, given that both teams had played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

It was an exciting match of football, but it only lacked goals until the final whistle went off after 90 minutes.

Well, it wasn’t short of drama, though, as Young Africans thought they had scored late in the second half through Aziz Ki’s thunder strike.

However, the referee had to check with VAR officials if Ki’s strike had crossed the goal line.

And after the consultation, Young Africans were denied what looked like a legitimate goal from TV replays.

RONWEN WILLIAMS THE HERO IN MAMELODI SUNDOWNS WIN

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero in the shoot-out as he stopped two penalties to send Sundowns through to the semis.

He denied Aziz Ki and Dickson Job, while Gaston Sirino was denied by Yanga shot-stopper Djigui Diarra.

Marcelo Allende, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Neo Maema all converted their spot-kicks for the Brazilians.

HOW TO WATCH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS YOUNG AFRICANS

This titanic clash between Sundowns and Tanzanin giants Yanga will be screened LIVE on SABC 3 as confirmed by the public broadcaster.

What it means is that the entire South African football fraternity will be able to watch the match at the comfort of their homes.

Sundowns need to beat Yanga or at least play to a score draw in order to advance to the semifinals of this year’s Caf Champions League.

And that’s because they managed to hold Yanga to a goalless draw in Tanzania about a week ago.

Now, Sundowns certainly need all the support they can get, especially their own fans on the night.

THE BRAZILIANS’ RECORD AT THIS STAGE SINCE 2016

The Brazilians have reached the quarterfinal stages on six occasions since lifting the Caf Champions League trophy in 2016.

However, they haven’t been too impressive at this stage of the tournament with only two wins and four draws to their name.

Those wins came against Wydad Athletic Club in 2017 (1-0) and against Al Ahly in 2019 (5-0).

Nonetheless, Sundowns can bank on their impressive home record of 17 consecutive games without a defeat across all competitions.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS YOUNG AFRICANS

What an occasion. Rulani Mokwena has guided Sundowns to another CAF Champions League quarter-finals event. Tonight will be the second leg in Tshwane after Kabo Yellow held Yanga to a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Tanzania last Friday.

This evening’s game will kick off at 20:00 from the Loftus Versveld. Sundowns vs Yanga will be live on SABC 3.

RULANI MOKWENA’S PRE-MATCH VIEWS

The Premier Soccer League coach of the season shared his preview of the game. “We are looking forward to what will be a very interesting game,” Sundowns coach Mokwena told the club’s media.

“I did say that Yanga are a very good side and you can see with their results and performances in their domestic league. They have a good coach in Miguel Ángel Gamondi and some good players in the team that have experience from some reputable countries. We expect a very difficult game on Friday, of course one that we are ready for,” Mokwena added.

“We are in a space where we have to think positive about the game. nothing else matters for us right now except for the 90 minutes. The focus is being at our best, understanding that Yanga are actually coming here to play the best team on the continent and we’ve got to be ready for that,” the Sundowns tactician added.

“The biggest lesson in the CAF games is that you can’t get too comfortable because the moment you get comfortable you are more vulnerable. Away from home where the score is 0-0, the potential of counterattacks can spin the narrative of the game. So, we will have to be very careful with our possession and when we feel comfortable. We have been in this situation before and hopefully that’s the experience we can use,” he continued.

Mokwena concluded by pleading with the Sundowns supporters to ‘play’ in the same way they did against Al Ahly in the African Football League (AFL) semi-finals in October 2023.

“Tomorrow the supporters will have to play and I asked them to play the way they played in the AFL against Al Ahly. We won that game because of our supporters. Not for any moment in the 90 minutes were they quiet and the drum kept being beaten. I honestly believe that if they come out in numbers, fill up the stadium and make it yellow on Friday, we will get an extra push. They also can’t suffer with us when we suffer, they’ve got to come, energise us and push us. If that can happen on Friday, then we’ve got a big advantage,” the Sundowns boss concluded.

Caf Champions League quarterfinal: Yanga’s strategy for Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/young-africans-yanga-have-reportedly-hatched-a-strategy-to-surprise-mamelodi-sundowns-on-friday/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 11:02:16 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2058144 Tanzania’s NBC Premier League champions, Young Africans (Yanga) have reportedly hatched a strategy to surprise Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday. The plan includes unleashing three key players on the hosts in the Caf Champions League quarterfinal, second-leg contest.

The Citizen newspaper of Tanzania confirms that the NBC Premier League kings have travelled to Pretoria with Khalid Aucho, Koussi Yao and Pacome Zouzoua. The trio missed the Caf Champions League quarterfinal, first-leg match on March 30, 2024, due to injury. The game ended goalless at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. In the opposite camp, Sundowns have also welcomed back playmaker Themba Zwane who was suspended for the first leg.

Caf Champions League quarterfinal: Who is available for Yanga v Sundowns?

Former Yanga goalkeeper Steve Malashi believes the availability of the three players would improve the performance of the NBC Premier League champions. “Remember in the last game, Yanga missed three key players. I understand they might feature in the return leg. I think Mamelodi Sundowns need to win this game. It will not be easy for them, as any draw with goals means Mamelodi Sundowns are out,” he told The South African.

Ex-Baroka FC player to face Sundowns in Caf Champions League quarterfinal?

Aucho is an experienced player who hails originally from Uganda. The well-travelled midfielder has PSL experience from his stint with Baroka FC in 2016. The following season, the 30-year-old eventually secured a move to Red Star Belgrade FC in Serbia. Three years later, the Ugandan returned to Africa in 2021 when he signed for the Caf Champions League participants, Yanga.

On the other hand, Zouzoua is a highly-rated Ivorian attacking midfielder. He boasts blistering speed using his height advantage. The 26-year-old has four goals and one assist to his credit in 10 Caf Champions League games this season. Additionally, Yao is a 27-year-old Ivorian defender.

Yanga coach’s comments on returning players

Yanga coach Angel Miguel Gamondi confirmed in an interview with @YoungAfricansEN that the players have returned from injury. “Tomorrow, we are starting more seriously. The team is doing well. We are trying to work with the injured players who are recovering,” he said.

The Argentine coach has since The Citizen that he would tweak his tactics to accommodate the returning stars in the Caf Champions League quarterfinal game. Part of the plan for the NBC Premier League is also to surprise Sundowns. He said: “We have assembled a complete squad, ready to take on Mamelodi Sundowns. Our team spirit is high. We are excited to have our full complement of players available. We are to make tactical changes as needed, which means that we field our best possible lineup.”

Gamondi’s message to his wards

Gamondi has also urged his wards to seize on any errors Mamelodi Sundowns would commit in the Caf Champions League quarterfinal game. The NBC Premier League coach also hopes to use his knowledge of the hosts to his advantage. He coached the PSL outfit years ago.

Yanga SC coach cajoles his troops ahead of Sundowns clash https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/yanga-sc-coach-angel-miguel-gamondi-has-challenged-his-charges-to-believe-in-themselves-when-facing-mamelodi-sundowns-on-friday/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 12:44:28 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2057078 Yanga SC coach Angel Miguel Gamondi has challenged his charges to believe in themselves when facing Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday. He said this after overseeing his first training session in Pretoria on Tuesday. The giants will clash in the CAF Champions League quarterfinal, second-leg game.

Engineer Hersi Said-led side loosened up hours after arriving in South Africa on Tuesday. Gamondi and Rulani Mokwena’s teams drew 0-0 in the first-leg encounter played last Saturday in Dar es Salaam. Yanga SC and Sundowns had the chances to score in the first-leg game, but missed the target.

What Yanga SC coach Gamondi said

Speaking to Yanga SC’s media team @YoungAfricansEN, Gamondi described the sights and sounds in training as quiet. He said: “We are working here in Pretoria. It is a little bit quiet. We are recovering from the trip. We are happy. We are in a good mood.”

He added that they would hit the next gear in training on Wednesday. The second-leg encounter will take place at Loftus Versefeld Stadium. Gamondi added: “Tomorrow, we are starting more seriously. The team is doing well. We are trying to work with the injured players who are recovering.”

Yanga SC players get Gamondi’s challenge

Gamondi then urged his Yanga SC players to believe in themselves if they are to progress to the semifinals. His remarks are in respect of the fact that Sundowns appear the favourites on paper.

“Always, we believe. We need to believe [in ourselves] and work hard. This is what is more important. We have a very good bunch of players who train hard and are serious. On Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, it was the commitment, enthusiasm, and courage that the players demonstrated that was impressive,” the Yanga SC mentor added.

How many fans are coming from Tanzania?

Gamondi hoped that the presence of Yanga SC fans who are traveling to Pretoria to watch the match would spur them on against Sundowns. The Citizen newspaper of Tanzania reports that the East African country’s government has sponsored 50 fans to cheer their team in South Africa.

Yanga SC can proceed to the semifinals with any scoring draw, courtesy of the away goal rule. On the other hand, Sundowns need a win at all costs to sail through. The Tshwane side last won the CAF Champions League in 2016 when Pitso Mosimane was in charge.

Full quarterfinal second-leg line-up

The other quarterfinal second-leg matches will see defending champions, Al Ahly, hosting Simba SC on Friday, also from Tanzania. The Egyptians won the first-leg game 1-0.  Elsewhere, Tunisians Esperance Sportive de Tunis face Asec Mimosa from Ivory Coast on Saturday whereas Petro de Luanda entertain Congolese side TP Mazembe in Angola on Saturday. All the first-leg matches, save for that of the holders, ended goalless. Second-leg quarterfinal games are scheduled for the weekend of April 5 and 6, 2024.

The Brazilians were held to a draw by ‘Yanga’ in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash.

Despite bossing the possession, Rhulani Mokwena’s side were unable to get a vital away goal from first leg.

The second leg will be played next weekend at Loftus Versfeld stadium.

Paint Loftus Yellow urges Sundowns star

“It was hard hot today, but what do you expect? It’s an away game, it’s expected that not everything will favour us,” Sundowns midfielder Mokoena said as quoted by IDiskiTimes.

“We wanted to get an away goal, which we didn’t get therefore we have to sort it out in South Africa – we have to win in South Africa.

“Masandawana, like you saw tonight, Yanga fans fully packed the stadium, may you please also come next Friday and support us, we really need you at Loftus Stadium.”

Mamelodi Sundowns XI: Williams, Lebusa, Kekana, Zungu, Mudau, Lunga, Mokoena, Lorch, Allende, Ribeiro, Shalulile.

Subs: Onyango, Esquivel, Aubaas, Modiba, Mkhulise, Morena, Maseko, Mvala, Matthews.

Action at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium gets under way at 20:00. The match will be televised live on SABC1.

Today’s clash is only the third time Mamelodi Sundowns and Yanga are meeting. The previous two clashes took place in 2001. Sundowns earned a 3-2 home victory while the away leg ended in a 3-3 draw.

We want to be the best – Mokwena

“I spent some time in Brazil in the off-season and during the break in early parts of January, what we’ve done is incredible, you go to Brazil [and] they speak, ‘Ow! You are the Mamelodi Sundowns coach’,” Rhulani Mokwena said as quoted by Goal.

“The first thing they talk about is the type of football we’re playing at almost every single club. You go to Fluminense, they ask ‘How do you also get the team to play like that?’

“You go to Flamengo, you go to Vasco, Botafogo and they also say ‘unbelievable’. They follow Mamelodi Sundowns, it’s incredible,”

“If the team has that type reach only based on performances on the pitch you can just imagine we scale into the Club World Cup space how much potential does this football club have.

“So it’s the ambition of the club and it’s one we have to work very, very hard to try to reach but for sure with the quality that Mamelodi Sundowns have, the support we get from the club it’s a possibility for sure,”

‘I see Sundowns in the next round’ Rulani Mokwena https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/i-see-sundowns-in-the-next-round-rulani-mokwena/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 13:23:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2054260 Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena believes his side will reach the CAF Champions League semi-final despite Saturday’s draw with Young Africans.

Masandawana were held by Yanga 1st leg quarter-final at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday evening.

Mokwena knows it’s all to play for when the two teams play in the 2nd leg in Pretoria.

The Brazilians have not made it to the final since winning the competition back in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane. Rulani Mokwena is confident Sundowns will move to the next round.

“Of course I will see Sundowns in the next round, I’m very confident about that, in fact,” he said.

“What’s the plan? The plan is to get home safely now, rest, drink lots of water, sleep, analyse the game and then prepare for Richards Bay – we have a very important league game on Tuesday so that’s the plan for now.”

Rulani Mokwena backing Sundowns to progress

Sundowns played Yanga without their captain Themba Zwane, who was suspended.

Mokwena has admitted that the team missed ‘Mshishi’ in the middle of the park.

“He’s the captain of the team and he’s an important part of the team,” he added.

“Of course, we missed him a little bit today but everyone tried. I’m happy with the commitment and the effort of the team, especially in the second half.

“Okay, let’s build on that. It’s not always easy coming from the FIFA break. The first game after the international break.

Sundowns looking to wrap up the league as early as possible

“But okay, let’s how it goes,” Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena said as per Gauteng News.

Masandawana next plays struggling Richards Bay on Tuesday night looking to extend their lead at the top. They currently top the DStv premiership with 11 points by having played two fewer games than their rivals.

Young Africans’ supremo shows his class ahead of Sundowns duel https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/caf-champions-league/young-africans-president-eng-hersi-said-has-shown-his-class-ahead-of-their-caf-champions-league-encounter-against-mamelodi-sundowns-on-saturday/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 10:11:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2052840 Young Africans president, Eng. Hersi Said, has shown his class ahead of their Caf Champions League encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. The Tanzanian club’s supremo has sent the South Africans a special message on the eve of the quarterfinal match.

Eng.Hersi Said spoke to The South African ahead of the first-leg game at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. He said Young Africans have done all they could to give Sundowns a hearty welcome to Dar es Salaam. He added that football should be the ultimate winner after 90 minutes. The Tanzanian Mainland Premier League champions command a big fan-base in the East African nation.

Young Africans’ boss sends special message to Sundowns

“We are very happy and excited to host one of the top clubs in Africa at this level of Caf CL QF,” he said.  “As a President of the host team [Young Africans], I am taking this opportunity to welcome Sundowns to Tanzania. I ask them to feel at home. Tanzania is a very peaceful country and it is unique on its own.”

How Young Africans’ president views the Sundowns game

Eng.Hersi Said described the quarterfinal clash with the Tshwane-based outfit as “the most popular. We are looking forward to the best 90 minutes. Mamelodi Sundowns, KARIBUNI SANA [welcome].” Furthermore, he said the Tanzania Mainland Premier League champions have ticked all the boxes for the Caf Champions League regulations. Eng.Hersi Said added: “We have made all the necessary standard arrangements as per the Caf standards.”

What other PSL teams felt about reception in Tanzania

Previously, other PSL teams such as Orlando Pirates have complained of ill-treatment in Tanzania. The Buccaneers made the accusations when they went to play a Caf Confederation Cup game against Simba in 2022. Simba eventually dismissed such claims. Young Africans are usually not associated with such allegations.

Eng.Hersi Said was referring to the regulations such as the obligations of host teams and association in the Caf Champions League. Caf website www.cafonline.com states that the host football association must ensure that the visiting side is treated well. It reads: “One bus for the players and one car for the officials…from the time of their arrival to that of their departure…the visiting association is responsible for organising the accommodation of its team. The host association is obliged to assist the visiting team with the reservation of the rooms.”

The regulations further explain: “A playing ground will be provided for the training of the visiting team. The field on which the match itself will be played must be put at the disposal of the visiting team for one training session of sixty minutes on the eve of the game.” The Caf website adds that “in case of using an artificial turf, the visiting team shall have the right to two training sessions on the playing ground.”

Eng.Hersi Said’s Young Africans and Simba are representing Tanzania in the Caf Champions League quarterfinals. The other ties have holders Al Ahly taking on Simba SC on Friday whereas Esperance Sportive de Tunis face Asec Mimosa. Second-leg quarterfinal games are scheduled for the weekend of April 5 and 6, 2024.
