Ipswich Town close to sealing a deal for Lyle Foster

According to media reports on X, newly-promoted Ipswich Town are negotiating a long transfer for Lyle Foster with an obligation to buy. The 23-year-old Soweto-born striker scored five goals and supplied three assists in 24 Premier League appearances last term. Foster has 12 caps and four goals for South Africa. The obligation to buy figure is £25m, which is roughly 30m or R594 million.

Foster is Bafana’s priciest-ever player

Benni McCarthy was formerly the most expensive South African footballer ever when Celta Vigo paid Ajax €6m (R113 million) for his services. After Benni, Joburg-born playmaker Steven Pienaar was the second-most expensive when 2011 he moved from Everton to Tottenham and fetched a fee of €3.6m (R67.6 million). The guaranteed fee that Burnley will pay to Westerlo for Kyle Foster’s services has shattered the record held by Benni since 1999. The Clarets paid €7m upfront, with a further €4m of add-ons triggered because of their promotion to the EPL. Foster’s move amounted to a staggering R225 million, but now his value is estimated at €13m (R257 million).

If Foster’s proposed move to Ipswich goes through, he’ll shatter his previous record.

Self-proclaimed Orlando Pirates fan

Lyle Foster was born in 2000 in Noordgesig, Soweto, and broke through with Orlando Pirates as a youth product. He was promoted to the Buccaneers first team in 2017, and his first big move abroad came two years later when Ligue 1’s Monaco came calling. AFoster made 11 appearances for the Sea Robbers before embarking on his European adventure.

MTN8 semi-final action for Orlando Pirates in an icy Mother City

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are preparing for a postponed MTN8 semi-final clash with Cape Town City. Initially planned for Tuesday evening, inclement weather conditions forced the game to be delayed. It’s not all that windy and rainy in Cape Town on Wednesday, but there is snow on Table Mountain!

Cape Town City hosts defending MTN8 champions Pirates in the semi-finals. This first leg from Cape Town is staged on Wednesday 28 August at 18:00 and the second leg at Orlando Stadium is on Saturday 31 August at 15:00. Thabiso Monyane will play right-back for both legs with new boy Van Rooyen ineligible and Thabiso Lebitso nursing an injury.

Liverpool icon rejects mega-money move to Saudi Arabia https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/breaking-news-liverpool-icon-rejects-mega-money-move-saudi-arabia/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 11:22:28 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2163669 Talismanic Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has revealed that he turned down a transfer to Saudi Arabia this summer because he is “really happy” at Anfield.

The Brazilian joined the Reds in 2018 for £66.8 million from Roma, becoming the world’s most expensive goalie at the time.

Liverpool icon rejects mega-money move

Alisson now 31 years old has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Club World Cup over his 261 appearances for Liverpool.

Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, and Jordan Henderson all departed Liverpool for Saudi Arabia in 2023, but Alisson intends to stay on Merseyside.

“I want to honour my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy,” said Alisson, whose contract runs until 2026.

“I never got to the point where I was talking about wages and things like this. It was just interest, but when you hear about the numbers the other players are getting you are a little bit attracted. That is normal.”

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on signing Valencia custodian Giorgi Mamardashvili to compete with Alisson after the departure of Adrian and with Caoimhin Kelleher seemingly seeking a move away from Anfield.

The 23-year-old Georgia international is set to complete a £30 million transfer before the transfer window closes.

Alisson was aware of the move before news broke and social media got hold of it.

“I knew about that [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think,” said Alisson.

“They are doing the right thing but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, [so] I will stay.”

Chasing perfection

New head coach Arne Slot is out to tweak Jurgen Klopp’s team into perfection.

“I have said a few times that my responsibility is always to look for perfection even though we all know that perfection is not really achievable,” Slot wrote in his programme notes for Liverpool’s clash with Brentford at Anfield on Sunday.

“It is about being the very best that we can be, as individuals and as a team, and part of this process is never falling into the trap of thinking we are good enough or that we have done enough.

“As I have said many times since coming here, I inherited a very good team from Jürgen and our responsibility now is to do everything we can to build on this legacy. We have a lot of quality and there is also a really positive culture in place, so that the opportunity for us to improve is clear even though it is just as clear that the team did really well last season.

“We are now just taking the first steps in that journey and if our experience of football should tell us anything it is that it will not be easy. But this is also what makes it so exciting. When a club like this one goes in a different direction or looks to become even stronger than it already is, it does so in the knowledge of what is possible and also the support that we will have along the way.”

Premier League match of the weekend: Aston Villa vs Arsenal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/premier-league-match-of-the-weekend-aston-villa-vs-arsenal/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 07:48:39 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2163061 South African broadcasting icon Robert Marawa has picked out the match of the second week of Premier League action with Aston Villa vs Arsenal his selection.

The match will kick off at 18:30 (SAST) on Saturday 24 August 2023 and can be viewed on SuperSport on DSTV or streamed on Showmax.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal top Premier League match

Marawa said that his choice came down to a toss up between Brighton vs Manchester United and Aston Villa’s meeting with Arsenal.

“I’ve had a tough time selecting my game of choice for Matchweek 2,” Marawa said.

“My initial thought was to talk about the Brighton and Hove Albion game against Manchester United, for obvious reasons. Brighton got those three goals last weekend; they got the three points and kept a clean sheet and topped the table after Matchweek 1, so that would have been the obvious choice.

“Manchester United also took care of business by winning their opening game, and their debutant Joshua Zirkzee scored and got them all three points, so it’s set up t be a tasty affair.”

The choice

However, Marawa would land on the match between two sides who finished in the top four last term.

“But after much thought, it’s the Aston Villa vs Arsenal game that provides the spark for me. A little bit of history. Aston Villa won away from home against West Ham last weekend. They scored an early goal thanks to Onana.

“They went in at half time level at 1-1 and then they bounced back from the game in the last 10 minutes thanks to Villa youngster Duran, who has been touted to be heading in the opposite direction to Arsenal.

“Arsenal played at home, won 2-0, and kept a clean sheet. The goals were scored by Havertz and Saka and it was a clinical performance from the Gunners. What stands out from me for this fixture is the history of this fixture that gives it that oomph. You look back at the 2022/23 season. Arsenal were five points behind Man City and chasing the title. They failed to win it.”

Aston Villa vs Arsenal smacks of unfinished business

Last season Aston Villa broke Arsenal’s long unbeaten streak and Mikel Arteta will remember as will his opposite number, former Gunner’s boss Unai Emery.

“Last season they were a mere two points behind, and they still couldn’t win the league. And they desperately want to end that 20-year league draught that has been plaguing them. The man that replaced Arsene Wenger once upon a time is now Villa’s manager. Unai Emery was hastily sacked by Arsenal. Now he will be on the opposition bench this weekend knowing very well that last season Villa were the only team to do the league double over Arsenal. They broke Arsenal’s unbeaten streak last season, so for all these reasons, this game serves as the ultimate spectacle for the weekend and stands out as my pick of Matchweek 2. It is also the first time this season that two teams who finished in the top four last season are facing off against one another. So we should be in for a treat.”

African star ready to light up the Premier League at Crystal Palace https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/african-star-premier-league-crystal-palace/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 17:55:13 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2162914 Morocco international Chadi Riad believes that he has found a good fit at Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace announced the signing of Riad on a five-year contract in June and he says that the club are a great fit for him.

Premier League new boy out to impress

“I was really interested in coming here because of the history that the club has, because of the league in which the club plays,” Riadi told Showmax.

“I learnt a lot this year about how the club plays its football, and I think it perfectly complements the way I play my football. And for the fans too, and above everything else, the interest that the club has shown in me since the beginning. I feel at home and that is why I am here.”

Riuad says that Playing in the Premier League is a dream come true.

“I’d simply say that since I was a child I had already dreamt of playing in the Premier League, as you can see it is the best league in the world, with players of an excellent level and so I am very eager to come and play in this league.”

Enjoy it like a child

Riad worked with former Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini at Betis but hasn’t spoken to the coach about his Premier League move.

“No, honestly regarding the Premier league, I haven’t spoken to the coach about it. But it is true that he has shown me 100% support for the new adventure that I was going to take.

“But I have spoken to Pablo Fornals, who played in the Premier League with Marc Roca, and they told me it was very good. That I was going to enjoy it like a child.”

Riad insists that he gives his all on the pitch but makes sure that he stays calm and does his job.

“I describe myself as a calm but strong footballer,” he added

“An aggressive footballer who knows how to think, who does not get carried away by the tension of the moment, intelligent, and I think I can fit in perfectly into Crystal Palace.

“The truth is that Crystal has had high level players who are very young, and I have come here to follow the same trajectory. To grow as they have grown.”

He is excited to test himself against the best players in the world.

Riad said: “In a league like the Premier League, all the forwards are top, they are at a high level. But they are players like Haaland for example. Forwards for big teams. I am excited to come up against players like these.”

English football’s best behaved teams https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/english-footballs-best-behaved-teams/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 08:01:55 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2161078 A new study by a leading football prediction site has revealed the squads in the top 4 tiers of English football with the cleanest disciplinary records.

The research analysed data from the 2023/24 season games in the English Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two competitions, to establish the teams who committed the most fouls and received the most cards.

Best behaved teams in English football

The study used a points system to decide the league’s dirtiest sides in which each foul constituted one point, each yellow card three points, and each red card ten points, allowing the team with the highest scores to be considered English football’s dirtiest, and vice-verse, those with the lowest, England’s ‘good-boys’.

Manchester City ranked as the team in England’s top four leagues with the lowest disciplinary score, making them the team with the best disciplinary record. The Sky Blues completed the last Premier League season with just 289 fouls, 53 yellow cards, and only 2 red ones. With this, their total discipline score came in at 413, or just 10.87 per-game, the lowest nationwide.

Not a single other Premier League side made the top ten for the best disciplinary records with as many as three ranking among the ten worst discipline scores.

Manchester split

Comparatively, Manchester United finished with a total discipline score of 576, having committed 401 fouls and received 83 yellow cards plus one red card. This places them with the 56th worst discipline score in the top four English leagues during the 23/24 season.

Julien Josset, CEO of FootballWhispers.com, commented on the findings: “The study’s results are fascinating, and while football fans have no shortage of ammunition to berate one another with, the teams ranking as England’s dirtiest will no doubt be subject to colourful criticism by fans of their opposition, particularly those of their greatest rivals.

“It’s also interesting to see that, while lower leagues are often associated with a more physical style of play, it’s the Premier League that sees the most teams in the dirtiest ten.

“While the distribution is relatively even among leagues, that’s certainly an interesting insight into football across the country.”

Ipswich Town vs Liverpool: Salah breaks PL record https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/ipswich-town-vs-liverpool-salah-breaks-pl-record/ Sat, 17 Aug 2024 16:58:26 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2158933 Mohamed Salah continued his incredible record of scoring in the opening Premier League fixture of the season when Liverpool beat Ipswich Town 2-0.

The talismanic striker moved clear of Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard with his ninth opening match goal in the Premier League.

Salah scores to enhance incredible record in Ipswich Town vs Liverpool match

Salah poked home the effort from close range to double Liverpool’s adavantage in the 65th minute of the clash.

It had taken Liverpool an hour to break the deadlock and Salah admitted it was a slog.

“It was quite tough today, to be fair. The weather is really warm today but it’s a tough team and I’m glad that we won the game today. I am always happy to make the difference for the team, that’s the most important thing, that the team won the game, so we just need to carry on,” Salah told TNT Sports TV.

Salah said that Liverpool expected a tough outing considering Ipswich were making their Premier League bow after a long absence from the top-flight.

“When they play at home especially it is quite tough,” he said.

“First game of the season, the crowd is always up and they always push them forward. It’s quite tough, we knew that before the game – we have played for many years now in the Premier League so we have that experience. So, yeah, we expected a tough game.”

Salah cannot explain opening day strike rate

Salah is at a loss to explain why he has done so well on the opening day of the season.

“I don’t know,” Salah exclaimed when quizzed about his record in first matches of the term.

“Hopefully I’ll keep going like this through the whole season, not just the first game! I try to help the team all the time. The most important thing is that the team wins the game. I’m always happy to score goals and to give assists so I just need to carry on.”

Arnse Slot bedding in

Salah admitted that it will take the team some time to adjust to Arne Slot’s way of doing things.

It’s quite different because Jürgen [Klopp] was in [charge] of the team for eight years here at Liverpool. He gave everything and now there is a new manager, a new system. It’s quite different for all of us so we need to adapt. We just take it step by step because some players also came back late, so we just need to know his way of playing and to enjoy the football.”

Cantona: The Premier League is for everyone, everywhere, and it’s time for a revolution! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/cantona-the-premier-league-is-for-everyone-everywhere-and-its-time-for-a-revolution/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 18:30:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2158570 Africa’s leading streaming platform Showmax has partnered with Eric Cantona to promote arguably
the greatest football offering on the planet.

In an awkward, live conversation with Manchester United legend, Eric Cantona – in
his debut appearance on Matchday Live – host Julia Stuart and Owen Hargreaves
attempted to placate the notorious Red Devils’ captain.

The Premier League is for everyone!

Their efforts were in vain, as the Frenchman eventually tired of the conversation and stormed off the set.

He offered an empassioned monologue about revolution as his parting shot.

Stuart says, “What can you and the millions of Manchester United fans around the world expect; what will be unfolding as the season progresses on their television sets?”

Cantona sarcastically chuckles and says, “television” a few times before standing and removing his microphone, jacket and tie, and proceeding to deliver a concluding monologue to camera.

He says, “How many people in this world don’t even own a television? What of [sic] them? To be truly beautiful, the game should be everywhere. It cannot be stuck on the wall – or just in the bar – no, it must fly. Then my friends, no one, no one should believe the Premier League is out of their league. It must be for everyone.”

He concludes, “And this marks the beginning; the revolution has begun.”

The revolution has begun

As he walks off-camera, we hear Julia Stuart asking Owen Hargreaves, “what must I do?”, before the broadcast cuts to a test pattern.

The show returns after the ad break with what appears to be a Cantona-led pirate broadcast.

Cantona defiantly declares, “The revolution will not be televised; the revolution will be live.”

In what is possibly the greatest live TV stunt ever staged, Showmax.com revealed to all 44 of its African markets – simultaneously, via linear TV, its streaming platform and YouTube Live – that football will never be the same again. Quite literally, because it has the most compelling Premier League offering in the world.

GSMA Intelligence data suggests there are more than half a billion unique mobile subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa, alone. This is seven times greater than the predicted number of television sets in the same region (74.76m according to Statista.com).

Hundreds of millions of people will finally be able to consume the greatest football league on the planet, for a fraction of what it costs to attend a live match in England, while cheering on hundreds of African players, in real time. It’s the Premier League in your pocket.

Welcome to the revolution!

FIVE talking points ahead of the new Premier League season https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/five-talking-points-ahead-of-the-new-premier-league-season-preview-manchester-city-fixtures-results-log/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 06:46:53 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2157344 Manchester City face a strong challenge from Arsenal as the champions look to win an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title.

Liverpool start a new era with Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp, while Erik ten Hag is under pressure to deliver at Manchester United after narrowly avoiding the sack.

Below, a look at FIVE things to watch out for when the new season gets underway on Friday:

Slot’s big shoes to fill

Liverpool fell short of giving Jurgen Klopp a glorious goodbye as they stumbled down the final straight last season to finish third.

Arne Slot has the unenviable task of replacing the German, who restored the Reds to the top of English and European football, while also bringing his larger than life personality to Anfield.

The Dutchman will struggle to match the cult of Klopp, but the early signs are positive that he can continue to win on the field.

Liverpool have swept all before them in pre-season, beating Arsenal, Manchester United and Sevilla.

But they are yet to make a single signing in the transfer window.

Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad has been linked as a potential new anchor for the midfield.

Slot has spoken of the similarities between he and Klopp’s style of play as one of the reasons he was poached from Feyenoord for the job.

And he will be hoping for a fast start to ease any fears over Klopp’s departure with a kind run of fixtures in the early months of the season.

Arsenal’s time?

Only once have Arsenal ever won more points in a Premier League campaign than the 89 they collected last season and it was still not enough to dethrone Manchester City.

Fuelled by that painful near miss, Mikel Arteta’s men are the coming force in English football.

The Gunners have steadily improved over the past three seasons and finished second in each of the past two campaigns.

Italian international Riccardo Calafiori adds even more quality to what was the best defence in the league last season.

But it is at the other end of the field where Arsenal may still find themselves short.

Kai Havertz had a fine second half to his first season at the club after a slow start.

The German is set to maintain his place as Arteta’s centre-forward as Arsenal have again decided not to go into the market for a striker.

Ten Hag’s short leash

Manchester United's Dutch manager Erik ten Hag

Manchester United’s shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May was enough to save Ten Hag’s job and even earned the Dutchman a new contract.

Yet the former Ajax boss remains on a short leash after United’s worst ever Premier League finish of eighth.

United have been one of the most active English clubs in the market, splashing out on Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, with deals for Bayern Munich defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui completed on Tuesday.

But in a worrying repeat for Ten Hag of last season’s injury woes, Yoro has already been sidelined for three months by a broken bone in his foot.

United open the season at home to Fulham on Friday and Ten Hag can ill afford a poor start or questions will quickly be raised again over his future.

Ipswich return

Leicester and Southampton have bounced back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, but Ipswich are fresh faces as they return to the top flight for the first time in 22 years.

Kieran McKenna has masterminded back-to-back promotions to bring the Tractor Boys back into the big time and keeping hold of the Northern Irishman despite interest from Chelsea and Brighton has been vital for Ipswich’s chances of survival.

The scale of the task they face is laid bare by the fact that all three promoted sides last season were relegated.

Maresca’s difficult choices

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has a baptism of fire as his side host Manchester City on the opening weekend, but the Italian is certainly not short of selection options.

In keeping with previous transfer windows since a takeover fronted by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, the Blues have spent big money on young talent from around the world over the close-season.

That includes Pedro Neto in a £54 million move from Wolves and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who shone for Maresca last season in Leicester’s promotion from the Championship.

However, Chelsea’s summer business has swelled their squad to upwards of 50 senior players.

That leaves Maresca with a difficult balance of trying to instill his style of play on a dressing room that will have a lot of players unhappy at their lack of playing time.

The countries that have produced the most Premier League stars https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/countries-produced-most-premier-league-stars/ Sat, 10 Aug 2024 18:00:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2101676 New research has uncovered which countries outside of England and Wales have produced the most Premier League players.

The Premier League is comprised of football teams from England and Wales, and draws players from all over the world.

Experts at Gambling ‘N Go analysed the nationalities of every footballer who has played in the Premier League since its foundation in 1992.

This was to determine which countries outside of England and Wales have produced the most top-flight players.

France provides the most Premier League players

At the top of the list is France, with a remarkable 234 Premier League players. Thierry Henry is among the most highly regarded French players. He was one of the Premier League’s most iconic figures during his time with Arsenal from 1999 to 2007, and briefly in 2012.

Known for his extraordinary pace and technical skill, Henry redefined the role of a forward. He played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s success, including their historic unbeaten season in 2003-04. Henry’s incredible goal-scoring ability earned him four Premier League Golden Boots, and he became Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer.

Scotland produces the second-most Premier League players

In second place is Scotland, with 217 players, including Darren Fletcher. Fletcher, who started his career as a Midfielder for Manchester United, made over 340 appearances for the team under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fletcher played a role in securing five Premier League titles and contributing significantly to the team’s Champions League triumph in 2008. Beyond his club success, Fletcher earned 80 caps for Scotland, placing him among the country’s most-capped players, surpassed only by legends like Jim Leighton and Kenny Dalglish.

Republic of Ireland in third

The Republic of Ireland is third, producing 200 Premier League players, with one being Roy Keane.

Keane joined Manchester United as a midfielder in 1993, and then became the club’s first non-British captain in 1997.

Keane drove the team to numerous successes, including seven league titles and a historic treble in 1999. He has coached at several clubs since his retirement in 2005 and remains among Manchester United’s all-time greats.

Spain provides 165 Premier League stars

Next on the list is Spain, with 165 players having graced the English top flight. Among these players is David Silva, a maestro in midfield and a key figure for Manchester City from 2010 to 2020.

Renowned for his skill, Silva earned the nickname “El Mago” (The Magician). He was instrumental in City’s rise to prominence, helping secure four league titles and numerous domestic cups. Silva’s ability to control the game and create scoring opportunities made him one of the most consistent and admired players in the league.

The Netherlands features highly

In fifth place is the Netherlands, with 149 players. One of the best Dutch players to have competed in the league is Dennis Bergkamp.

Bergkamp joined Arsenal in 1995 and spent 11 years with them before he retired. He played a pivotal role in the club’s success, including their historic unbeaten season in 2003-04, where they finished with a record of 28 wins, 12 draws and no defeats.

Bergkamp played a part in winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in his time at Arsenal, scoring 115 goals in 416 games and leaving an indelible mark as one of the finest foreign players to play in the Premier League.

The Brazilians starring in the Premier League

With 115 players, Brazil ranks sixth.

Roberto Firmino ranks as the highest-scoring Brazilian player in Premier League history. A dynamic and versatile forward, he has been a key player for Liverpool since joining the league in 2015.

Firmino’s ability to link play and create opportunities has helped Liverpool secure major honours, including the league title in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019.

Portugal is next, with 92 players who have been in the Premier League. The nation has produced many well-respected players, including the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo. One of the most electrifying talents to grace the Premier League, he made a significant impact during his time with Manchester United from 2003 to 2009. Renowned for his exceptional skill, Ronaldo firstly played a crucial role in United’s dominance, helping them secure three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008. His skill also earned him numerous individual accolades, including his first Ballon d’Or in 2008.

Argentina and Italy in eighth and ninth

In eighth place is Argentina, with 84 Premier League players, including Sergio Agüero. One of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, he played a crucial role in Manchester City’s success during his decade-long tenure with them from 2011 to 2021. His 184 league goals make him the highest-scoring foreign player in league history. Agüero’s unforgettable last-minute goal in 2012 secured City’s first league title in 44 years, cementing his place in football history. Overall, his contributions helped City win five Premier League titles, solidifying his legacy as a true Premier League legend.

Closely following Argentina is Italy, which has produced 83 players. Among these is Gianfranco Zola, who made a lasting impact in the Premier League during his time with Chelsea from 1996 to 2003. His ability to score spectacular goals and also provide crucial assists helped Chelsea secure two FA Cups, a League Cup, and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Also known for his sportsmanship and charisma, he is of the Premier League’s most beloved and talented players of all time.

The great Danes

Tenth is Denmark, with 80 Premier League players. One of the most famous Danish footballers is Peter Schmeichel, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in PL history. He also played for Manchester United from 1991 to 1999. His contributions were instrumental in securing five league titles, three FA Cups, and the historic treble in 1999, which included the Champions League. Schmeichel’s consistent excellence and charismatic personality made him a legend at Old Trafford and a benchmark for future goalkeepers

Sundowns R46.7 million flop and Man United defender separated at birth? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/sundowns-flop-esquivel-man-united-defender-separated-at-birth/ Sat, 10 Aug 2024 06:15:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156499 Sundowns’ R46.7m signing Matias Esquivel is returning to his native Argentina. Don’t you think he looks like Man United defender Lisandro Martínez?

Sundowns score big with Esquivel moving back to Argentina

According to iDiskiTimes, the Argentinian playmaker will return to his homeland to link up with Primera División with Club Atlético Talleres. He arrived for a reported R46.7 million in January and has made only 13 appearances for the club, bagging two goals and an assist. Reports indicate his move to Talleres will be a season-long loan with a buy option. If that option is triggered, Sundowns will scoop a profit on their initial investment. The South African champions also open up a foreign slot in their squad.

Esquivel and Man United defender Martínez separated at birth?

If you’re a Man United fan, as approximately 10% of the entire human population unfortunately are, you’ll lament the injury issues plaguing Argentinian defender Lisandro Martínez. Nicknamed “The Butcher” during his days at Ajax Amsterdam, Martínez has been a rare source of joy for Red Devils fans with his aggressive defensive style and uncompromising tackling, despite his modest height. But let’s also all admit that he looks a lot like his compatriot Matias Esquivel. They aren’t related, but if you told us they were, we’d believe you!

Man United rescued their 2023-2024 season

By beating Man City in last season’s FA Cup final, United finished on a high in an otherwise forgettable campaign. Erik Ten Hag kept his job, but attack coach Benni McCarthy didn’t. United begin their new campaign against City in the Community Shield as the FA Cup winners take on the Premier League champions in the traditional season curtain-raiser. That game is on Saturday 10 August at 16:00.

Betway Premiership return looms large

The new campaign gets underway on Saturday 14 September. Defending champions Sundowns host SuperSport United while Royal AM vs Cape Town City is the other early match on the opening day. Kaizer Chiefs are away to Marumo Gallants while Orlando Pirates host Chippa. Polokwane City meets AmaZulu and Sekhukhune welcomes promoted Magesi FC to round out the action on Saturday. Sunday 15 September’s fixtures are Richards Bay vs TS Galaxy and Stellies vs Golden Arrows.

How to watch the FA Community Shield https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/how-watch-fa-community-shield/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 07:04:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2156151 With just 10 days to go until the eagerly anticipated Premier League season kicks off, the FA Community Shield gives fans the ultimate warm-up act.

How to watch the Community Shield on the weekend

Showmax has announces that it will be streaming the Community Shield live, as Manchester City and Manchester United renew their rivalry in the traditional curtain-raiser on its mobile sport plan. DStv Premium subscribers can also catch the action on their usual SuperSport channels

The Community Shield traditionally kicks off the English football season, and this year’s match promises to be a blockbuster.

The game, which kicks off at 16:00 at Wembley Stadium in the UK, will be available at no additional cost to Showmax PL subscribers.

The Community Shield is a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final, which saw Erik ten Hag’s troops emerge victorious against their noisy neighbours.

The rivalry between the two Manchester clubs has intensified in recent years, with high-stakes matches becoming the norm. Fans can expect another pulsating contest as both teams look to gain early momentum for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Showmax delighted with Premier League offering

Showmax CEO Marc Jury said Showmax was thrilled to be bringing world-class football action to subscribers: “It’s the perfect appetiser to whet the appetite for the upcoming Premier League season.

“The match between Man United and Man City is a dream clash for any football fan, and we can’t wait to see these two titans battle it out for the first trophy of the season. This is an exciting time for football, and we’re proud to be at the heart of the action.”

Last year, Arsenal claimed the Community Shield in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester City.

City have now lost their last three Community Shields, losing to Arsenal, Leicester City and Liverpool in the past three years.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will have revenge on his mind as he attempts to win his third Community Shield – and his first since 2019, having lost the last three.

For Erik ten Hag, this is his first stab at winning the competition, but in his short time at Old Trafford he has already enjoyed success at Wembley twice, in the 2022/23 League Cup as well as this year’s FA Cup triumph.

The first time United and City faced each other in the Community Shield, or the Charity Shield as it was then known, was at Maine Road in October 1956

Manchester Derby in Community Shield

This was the first competitive Manchester Derby played under floodlights, and was settled by a single goal, scored by United forward Dennis Viollet. It would be 55 years before the two sides contested the trophy again, in August 2011. United again prevailed, having overturned a 2-0 half time deficit, with Portuguese winger Nani the hero of the day, scoring the equaliser just before the hour mark, and then bagging the winner in the fourth minute of injury time.

Such has been their dominance for a long period of time. There have been only three occasions since 2007 that at least one of the Manchester clubs hasn’t been involved in the Community Shield match, although surprisingly this is only the third time in history that they have come up against each other in the competition.

United will be hoping to take the trophy home for the 22nd time, and City for the seventh time in this feisty encounter.

How the result will affect both teams going into the new Premier League season is unknown, but both teams will want to kick off the new campaign on a winning note.

The new Premier League season kicks off on 16 August, with a full fixture list packed with enticing matchups. Showmax will continue to bring fans closer to the action with all 380 games live on Showmax Premier League for mobile devices.

The opening game of the new season sees Manchester United take on Fulham at Old Trafford, in what is expected to be an action-packed encounter.

There are plenty of other exciting fixtures on the opening weekend of the new season. A rejuvenated Arsenal takes on Wolves, Liverpool face newcomers Ipswich Town, while arguably the game of the weekend sees defending champions Manchester City take on a newly managed Chelsea team.

How Jose Mourinho poached Benni McCarthy for Porto https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/how-jose-mourinho-poached-benni-mccarthy-for-porto/ Sun, 04 Aug 2024 17:30:37 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2152672 Bafana legend Benni McCarthy won the UEFA Champions League. It was a winding road though for the former Orlando Pirates man who once worked under Jose Mourinho.

Benni McCarthy was a key player for Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho, the once self-proclaimed special one, made sure he signed Benni McCarthy watching the Bafana star in action for Celta Vigo in Spain. He watched Benni in the stands while he played for LaLiga side Celta Vigao, determined to sign the South African at any cost. He made the move official and the rest is history. Speaking of history, McCarthy is the first and only South African winner of the UEFA Champions League. He was a key figure in their run to the title, scoring a double in Porto’s 2-1 win over Man United in the Round of 16. They went on to vanquish Lyon, Deportivo La Coruna and Monaco toclaim the crown.

Reputation speaks for itself for an ex-Orlando Pirates man

Benni is Bafana’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 31 goals from 80 caps, and he’s the first and only South African footballer to win the UEFA Champions League. There is a certain status attached to an individual with these special accolades. 46-year-old McCarthy is the first and only South African UEFA Champions League winner and has the likes of Celta Vigo, Ajax Amsterdam, Porto, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United on his playing CV. Not too shabby.

“Having reportedly turned down a two-year contract from the Red Devils following the expiry of his deal in June, McCarthy is said to have tested the waters with a possible move to the MLS, while talk of a return to the DStv Premiership remained rife,” the report read on SoccerLaduma.

Van Rooyen an upgrade on Monyane?

According toiDiski Times, Orlando Pirates have made an official bid to Stellenbosch for their skipper Deano van Rooyen.

Pirates want to bolster their options at the back with a player plus cash offer for Deano van Rooyen. The 27-year-old has been a rock-solid performer for Stellies, only missing nine league encounters in the last four completed campaigns. 111 appearances out of 120 shows how dependable and durable he is at this level. Pirates have Thabiso Monyane, Thabiso Lebitso and Bandile Shandu vying for the right-back spot.

Which English football team’s fans get arrested the most? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/which-english-football-teams-fans-get-arrested-the-most/ Sat, 03 Aug 2024 10:25:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2153920 A new study has identified the English football teams with the most fans arrested for matchday offences, with West Ham United topping the list.

Firstly, West Ham United ranks top of the list, with a total of 214 arrests from 2019 to 2023.

Online casino JeffBet.com analysed data from the Home Office to determine the number of arrests per team from the EFL Championship and Premier League between 2019 – 2023.

English football hooligans still a major issue

The most common reason for the arrests among West Ham fans was public disorder, which includes offences such as intimidating and threatening the opposing team.

In total, 74 West Ham fans were arrested for this. Other prominent reasons for arrests included violent disorder, which accounted for 54 arrests, and throwing missiles, which amounted to 39 arrests.

“It’s fascinating to survey the number of fans arrested per team, but it’s disheartening to see the amount of violence that occurs during football games. It’s particularly dismaying for young fans, who may be put off going to matches for this reason,” said a spokesperson for JeffBet.

He also said: “Sadly, violence has become a normalised part of football. Hopefully in the future, we will be able to see a decrease in the amount of violence associated with the sport.”

The rest headed by Manchester hooligans

Secondly, Manchester United come in with 178 arrests. Violent disorder was a common cause for the arrests, which involves harming others and threatening the safety of an individual – 37 Manchester United fans were arrested for this offence. Other prominent offences included pitch incursion, which accounted for 18 arrests, and the possession of Class-A drugs, which totalled 16 arrests.

Ranking third on the list is Manchester City, with a total of 171 arrests. Public disorder was the most common cause of arrest, accounting for 49 in total. Other recurring offences included pitch incursion and the possession of pyrotechnics, which both amounted to 18 arrests.

Leeds United is fourth on the list, with 165 arrests. Public disorder was the main reason for arrest, with a total of 58 fans arrested for this offence. Other significant offences included violent disorder, which accounted for 37 arrests, and throwing missiles, which was the reason for 13 arrests.

East Midlands gets rough

Leicester City places fifth, with a total of 135 arrests. A prominent offence involved throwing missiles, which accounted for a total of 10 arrests, as well as the possession of pyrotechnics, with a total of 9 arrests.

Ranking sixth on the list is Birmingham City, with 130 arrests. The study reveals that the leading cause of arrest was violent disorder, with a total of 54 Birmingham City fans arrested for this offence. Another key reason for arrest involved fans driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which accounted for a total of 12 arrests.

Everton places seventh on the list, with a total of 125 arrests. One of the main causes for arrest was pitch incursion, which amounted to 20 arrests. Other significant offences included throwing missiles and the possession of pyrotechnics, which both accounted for 18 arrests.

Tottenham Hotspur is eighth on the list, with 121 arrests. Violent disorder was a reoccurring cause for arrest, with a total of 37 Tottenham fans arrested for this offence.

Nobody likes us and we don’t care

Placing ninth on the list is Millwall, with 117 arrests. One of the main causes for arrest was violent disorder, with a total of 39 arrests.

Chelsea ranks tenth on the list, with a total of 112 arrests. A common offence included the act of throwing missiles, with a total of 14 Chelsea fans arrested for this offence. Another prominent offence involved fans driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which accounted for 11 arrests.

The study into English football hooligans reveals that a total of 5,223 fans were arrested from 2019 to 2023 – excluding the arrests from international games.  Interestingly, the leading cause of arrest was public disorder, with 1,849 cases.

Top Premier League earner bags R490 million a year https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/top-premier-league-earner-de-bruyne-ronaldo-messi/ Sat, 27 Jul 2024 09:58:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2147277 The English Premier League is a wildly attractive option for players around the globe because of how much money and prestige is on offer. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, eat your heart out.

Manchester City playmaker De Bruyne tops the Premier League charts

33-year-old Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is the best earner in the Premier League, pocketing €24.7m (R490 million) gross salary per annum. Surprisingly, he’s only the fifth-best-paid player across Europe’s top five leagues. Ahead of him are Frenkie de Jong with €37.5m, Robert Lewandowski with €33.3m, Kylian Mbappe with €31.2m and Harry Kane on €25m. You can view the top ten earners below. An interesting trend is that Spanish superpowers Barcelona and Real Madrid occupy the top three places. Real Madrid new boy Kylian Mbappe immediately climbs into the top echelons. Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Casemiro are the other Premier League representatives in this top 10 list via transfermarkt. Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku are in the top 20.

Cristiano Ronaldo earning huge in the Saudi Pro League

CR7 earns an astonishing €200m (R3.9 billion) annual salary. Neymar and Karim Benzema take home €100m each, while African duo Riyad Mahrez and Sadio Mane pick up €52.5m and €40m respectively. All five of these players outstrip the top earners in Europe.

MLS figures: Messi is at the top, obviously

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Njabulo Blom is the second-best-paid South African in the MLS, earning R6.4 million annually. Minnesota United FC’s Bongokuhle Hlongwane outstrips him with earnings of R11.6 million. Former Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula earns R5.5 million) annually. For context, the MLS top earner Lionel Messi earns R390 million annually. Messi’s earnings are just 10% of Ronaldo’s. However, the Argentinian’s groundbreaking deal with Inter Miami gives him an equity/purchase option of the club once he retires.

Should Chelsea buy back Tammy Abraham for £68 million? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/should-chelsea-buy-tammy-abraham-68-million/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 10:05:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=1532125 Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes the first step to righting the club’s course would be to buy Tammy Abraham back from AS Roma.

Chelsea might be able to get the striker back for £68 million.

Should Chelsea buy back Tammy Abraham

ALSO READ: The latest PSL transfer rumours

Sutton told Betting Sites UK that Abraham’s return would provide an immediate boost to Chelsea.

He said: “Tammy Abraham is an out-and-out No 9, and Chelsea decided to let him go. That was a bit of a strange one, but of course, they expected Lukaku to come in and have a stormer, which he didn’t do.”

ALSO READ: Five most underrated Premier League kits in recent years

“Buying Tammy back is one of those that I could see happening. I think he’s done pretty well at Roma.

“The criticism of Chelsea is that while they have lots of creative players, they don’t actually have somebody to stick the ball in the net.

“So I actually think £68m would be a smart piece of business to bring Tammy Abraham back to Chelsea.”

Chelsea lucked out on Aubameyang

Sutton also commented on the lamentable Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saga, which hasn’t been good for Chelsea or the player.

“With Aubameyang it was sort of unfortunate for him the way Tuchel left as soon as he was signed.

“But his attitude at Arsenal was really poor in the end, and then he slunk off to Barcelona before coming in at Chelsea. I’m not so sure it was ever going to work, and now it seems like he’s been totally frozen out by Graham Potter. There’s an inevitable end going to happen there.”

Spurs question

When quizzed on who should be the next Spurs manager post-conte, Sutton said,

“I don’t know whether there’d be a split in the fan base or not really. Pochettino was much loved in the fact that he got them to the Champions League final, and improved the team.

“He gets the club, he gets the brand of football which was Conte’s downfall really because he didn’t. Really, I think a lot of Spurs fans would like him back. But Nagelsmann has now lost his job at Bayern Munich and everything I’ve read suggests he’s making a play for the job. So it’s Stellini in charge to the end of the season with Ryan Mason, but that’s just to stopgap.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if somebody did come in before the end of the season – if Daniel Levy can crack a deal. But it’ll be interesting whether Pochettino is the one to come back. I’m not so sure they’ll go down that route, which probably means, he’ll be the next manager.”

Arsenal’s Saka is the envy of all

After Saka’s player of the match performance against Ukraine, Sutton had this to say about Arsenal’s talisman.

“I love the bravery of the young players at Arsenal,” Sutton commented.

“Saka especially. Is there a better right winger in the world at the moment? I really don’t think so. He’s 21. Martinelli is flying. But what a job Arteta has done with the youngsters!”

Michael Owen picks Premier League winners https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/michael-owen-picks-premier-league-winners/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 11:24:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2150175 Former Liverpool, Man United and Newcastle striker Michael Owen is eagerly anticipating the start of the new Premier League season and says he is delighted with the fixture schedule.

When does the Premier League start?

The 2024/25 Premier League season kicks off on Friday 16 August, with Manchester United facing Fulham at Old Trafford.

The excitement continues throughout the opening weekend, with Ipswich Town’s top-flight return against a newly managed Liverpool led by Dutch manager Arne Slot.

There is also the small matter of a fiery London clash between Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers before last season’s champions, Manchester City, travel to Chelsea in a potential early title contender showdown.

Owen believes the season could not start on a higher note.

“The opening weekend of the season when the fixtures get announced is always a highlight in the calendar for me,” said Owen.

“I think as much as I always look at the newly promoted teams to see who they’re playing and if there’s some exciting ties there, I think my first reaction has got to be Chelsea against Manchester City.”

“Chelsea ended the season well. And now obviously there is a surprise change in manager with Enzo Maresca. So, it’ll be interesting to see how that game goes.”

“Anybody going to Stamford Bridge will find it tough. During my playing days, I always found Stamford Bridge the hardest place to go to.”

“I’m sure Manchester City will find it a difficult place. I remember last season, at Stamford Bridge, they hosted Liverpool. It was a fantastic game, and this could be equally as good.”

Opening day

Owen is also eagerly awaiting his former club’s clash with Fulham on the opening day. Fulham travel to Old Trafford, having won there last season thanks to a late goal by Alex Iwobi.

“I fancy Fulham to be quite a difficult team to predict. They went to Old Trafford last season and won, so Manchester United will definitely be wary of them.”

“ Of course, the big news coming out of Old Trafford this summer is that manager Erik Ten Hag is staying.”

“There’s going to be lots of changes behind the scenes. But they’ve stayed consistent with their manager, which I wouldn’t say is a surprise. And I thought it was a 50/50 call.”

“But I think I’ve been quite vocal in the past. I’m sure you know my views: I would have made the change there as well, personally.”

“There’s going to be a lot of pressure on Ten Hag, certainly in the first handful of games. I mean, if he gets off to a bad start, then of course the pressure will mount.”

The fixtures come thick and fast with champions Man City taking on last season’s second-placed Arsenal already in Matchweek five.

Arsenal and Man City start as favourites

Owen believes the Gunners and the Citizens will start the season as favourites for the title.

“I think going into the season you’ve got to feel that that Manchester City and Arsenal are the two teams to beat.”

“I know Liverpool put up a good fight for most of the season. But I think it’s fair to say that the best two teams in the league last season were Arsenal and Manchester City.”

“So again, eyes get drawn to that fixture early in the season. Last season Arsenal were happy to hold on to a draw at the Etihad.”

“A lot of people think that might be where the title was lost. Maybe Manchester City were there for the taking that night and they didn’t really go for it. They were quite happy with the draw, so it’ll be interesting going into obviously a different time of the season.”

Arsenal faces a tough start to the season, coming up against Wolves on the opening day, before travelling to Aston Villa, then facing Brighton at home before turning their attention to the North London derby where they welcome arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

“It is hard to know what’s an advantage and what’s a disadvantage. I certainly think an advantage is having a good run-in. Having some of the weaker teams going into the last handful of games. I’m not quite sure what the advantage is at the start of the season.”

“I probably wouldn’t want to play against one of the newly promoted teams just because they’re probably confident from last season.”

“ You know, it’s all very new for their fans. It’ll be an electric atmosphere, so I’d probably want to avoid newly promoted teams early in the season.”

Owen’s former club Liverpool takes on a newly promoted team in Ipswich Town in their opening fixture. He anticipates a tricky fixture for Slot’s men.

“It is quite a tricky start. As I mentioned, going away to a newly promoted team, first game of the season is probably the thing you would want to avoid the most.”

“These teams are on the back of a good season last season, hence their promotion. So, it could be a tricky fixture for Arne Slot.”

“ And of course, you know, all eyes will be on them as well. On Liverpool, the pressure will be on. Following Jurgen Klopp is going to be a very, very difficult job.”

“But listen, it’s not the hardest fixture in the world. You still expect Liverpool to win it. But as I say, if I had my pick, I’d probably want to avoid the newly promoted teams early on in the season.”

Man City are the team to beat in the Premier League

City will once again be the team to beat in the Premier League and are favourites for the title again.

“Manchester City are going to be the team to beat again for Premier League titles on the spin. Incredible achievement, and they go into this season as the favourites again.”

“City and Arsenal have to start the season as favourites. Liverpool didn’t really play so well in the first half of the season.”

“It was incredible how they were still in touch and actually at the top of the league for a period of time, and then they just fell away at the end of the season.”

“But I think the consistent teams were Arsenal and Manchester City. And based on that, you’ve got to say they’re the two favourites again this season.”

Arsenal and Man City start as favourites for Premier League title https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/arsenal-man-city-start-favourites-premier-league-title/ Sat, 20 Jul 2024 12:38:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2145154 Former England international Michael Owen is eagerly anticipating the start of the new Premier League season and says he is delighted with the fixture schedule.

Opening day at Old Trafford

The highest-paid players in the Premier League in 2024 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/highest-paid-players-premier-league-2024/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 03:32:27 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2097809 The English Premier League is one of the highest-paying football leagues in the world.

Star players at top clubs can make very impressive salaries indeed.

The highest-paid players in the Premier League

Here we look at the ten highest-paid players in the Premier League in 2024.

10 Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) – £300,000

Mercurial Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has been on a weekly wage of £300,000 since signing a contract extension in July 2023.

Rashford’s current deal with Manchester United runs until 30 June 2028 while the star man also has a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike.

9 Jack Grealish (Manchester City) – £300,000

Manchester City spent a then-British record £100 million to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in August 2021.

At the same time they agreed to play the England midfielder £300,000-per-week.

8 Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea) – £315,000

Enzo Fernandez is rather incredibly contracted to Chelsea until 2032 after signing a long-term deal when he joined the London club in January 2023.

Fernandez is currently sidelined with a groin injury but the versatile midfielder is still a key player for the Blues.

7 Jadon Sancho (Manchester United) – £320,000

Jadon Sancho has proven an expensive flop for Manchester United although he is currently out on loan to Borussia Dortmund.

Still Manchester United have Sancho under contract until the end of the 2026 season and will likely be looking to offload the player in the next window.

6 Raheem Sterling (Chelsea) – £325,000

Raheem Sterling’s massive wages have also proven a frustration for Chelsea.

Sterling is tied to Chelsea until 2027 on his current deal and the club’s attempts to move him on have met with resistance from the player.

The five highest-paid players in the Premier League

5 Raphael Varane (Manchester United) – £340,000

For now Raphael Varane remains the fifth-highest paid English Premier League player.

Varane has agreed to be released from his contract at the end of the season by mutual agreement.

4 Casemiro (Manchester United) – £340,000

Although Casemiro has excelled at times, there were some who questioned Manchester United’s decision to pay £60 million for the 31-year-old midfield player and give him a long-term deal. It might be said that those sceptics were justified.

Despite the expense, the former Real Madrid star signed a four-year contract with the possibility of an additional season.

3 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – £350,000

Liverpool agreed to make Mohamed Salah their highest-paid player ever when he signed a new deal in July 2022.

The Reds have received huge offers for the Egyptian forward from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

2 Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – £375,000

In the summer of 2022, Erling Haaland signed a five-year contract with Manchester City, making him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

For Pep Guardiola’s club, the Norwegian sensation has been breaking scoring records at will. Thanks to a respectable goal bonus, he frequently receives additional payments from the club.

The highest-paid player in the Premier League

1 Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – £400,000

Kevin De Bruyne, the anchor of Manchester City’s midfield, shot to the top of the list in April 2021 after agreeing to a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The 32-year-old has contributed significantly to the team’s success over the previous five Premier League titles and is perhaps the most significant addition to the roster during Khaldoon Al Mubarak’s ownership.

Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy named Red Devils’ new coach https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/manchester-united-legend-ruud-van-nistelrooy-named-new-coach/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 16:02:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2139005 Manchester United has appointed Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as assistant managers of the men’s first team, to work under Erik ten Hag until June 2026.

The lethal former striker returns to the Red Devils for the first time since departing in 2006 as part of Erik ten Hag’s restructuring of his coaching staff after signing a new contract, which also runs through to 2026.

Van Nistelrooy had a successful stint at PSV Eindhoven but left the club last year. He turned down the chance to become head coach of Burnley in order to link up with Ten Hag, who clung on to his role as Manchester United head coach after the club spoke to alternative candidates including Thomas Tuchel following the team’s worst ever Premier League finish.

Van Nistelrooy is universally considered one of Manchester United’s best strikers of all time, having bagged 150 goals in all competitions between 2001 and 2006. During his five-year spell at the club, he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. However,

Hake has known Ten Hag for almost two decades, first working together at FC Twente. His last job was with the Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles.

WHAT THE BIG BOSSES AT THE CLUB HAD TO SAY

Commenting on the two new additions to the Manchester United coaching staff, Ten Hag said: “I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge and new energy to the staff. Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.”

Dan Ashworth, in his capacity as sporting director at Manchester United, added: “Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men’s first-team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is an important part of that.

“It’s a particular pleasure to welcome Ruud back to the club where he enjoyed so much success as a player, and I know that he and Rene will help reinforce the winning mentality and high standards we are aiming for.”

BENNI MCCARTHY AND CO LEAVE MANCHESTER UNITED

Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher remain key parts of the staff as senior first-team coach and first-team coach, respectively. Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy have left Manchester United.

Ten Hag added: “Mitchell has decided that now is the right time for him to pursue his own ambitions in a number one position; I want to pay tribute to his fantastic service over the past two years and also to Benni for his important contributions. We send them our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

FIRST LOOK! Arsenal’s famous cannon returns in new Adidas kit https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/arsenal-famous-cannon-returns-new-adidas-kit/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 13:31:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2096352 Adidas and Arsenal revealed the new home kit for the 2024/2025 season, with the club’s iconic cannon at the heart of a timeless look that celebrates the rich heritage of The Gunners.

The club’s traditional colours of red and white with a slick navy addition, combine to create a modern-looking design, that sees the cannon feature outside the crest on the home kit for the first time since the 1989/90 season.

Arsenal’s famous cannon returns

Previously seen on Arsenal away and third kits, the cannon represents an enduring symbol of Arsenal’s history which has been synonymous with the club since its inception.

The minimalist design features a block red and white base.

The use of a unique structured fabric throughout creates a textured feel and adds intrigue to the design when viewed up close.

Anchored in history

Binding the jersey is the use of navy-blue detailing on the Adidas three-stripes and side panels, creating a seamless connection between the shirt and shorts.

“We anchored this season in the iconography of Arsenal – and there is no more iconic symbol for Arsenal than the cannon,” Sam Handy, SVP of Product and Design at Adidas said.

“In development, we revisited the archive and reviewed years of design and collaboration, the core elements of the club’s identity to players and supporters.

So, this season is all about the cannon, the role it plays in the legacy of the club and reintroducing it to a fresh generation of supporters and players.”

Crafted for performance and to provide world-class players with the confidence to play under pressure, the lightweight jerseys feature the latest in adidas technology and were created in close collaboration with the Arsenal men’s and women’s teams.

“Since joining Arsenal, it has been clear to me how important the cannon is, to this great club and our supporters,” Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli said.

“It epitomises our spirit and we’re excited to wear it on the pitch with pride next season.”

HEAT.RDY technology features in the on-field version of the jersey. While the fan version features AEROREADY technology, which uses sweat-wicking or absorbent materials to keep the body feeling dry.

Arsenal forward, Alessia Russo said: “I love the simplicity of this new kit – giving the cannon space to shine. We know how much it means to the supporters – so to have it front and centre of our home kit will fill us with confidence every time we step foot on the pitch.”

Liverpool eye more midfield signings with Gravenberch labelled a flop https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/liverpool-transfer-news-gravenberch-labelled-a-flop/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 09:36:39 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2073931 It seems that Ryan Gravenberch has been labelled an Anfield flop and is not long for Liverpool.

Gravenberch has been linked with a move to Galatasaray in Turkey after he found minutes hard to come by under Jurgen Klopp.

Compatriot Arne Slot comes in as coach but that might now save him.

Gravenberch out

According to Football Insider sources, Liverpool are keen on bringing in a midfielder and a winger as a priority.

Liverpool might be able to pry Bruno Guimaraes away from Newcastle United if the Premier League leaves an FFP axe dangling above the Magpies.

Although the Brazilian is rumoured to have a £98 million release clause in his contract, he would surely bring a wealth of creative skill to the team.

Boubacar Kamara of Aston Villa has been a vital member of the team’s midfield spine, helping them surpass all expectations and emerge as unexpected champions league contenders halfway through the season.

There’s a good possibility the Reds will find room for the Frenchman in a midfield that has already undergone revitalization.

More midfield options for Liverpool

In keeping with the Aston Villa motif, Douglas Luiz has been a major contributor to his team’s great Premier League campaign thus far.

Naturally, he is linked with a move to one of the three clubs above Aston Villa.

Liverpool might look to France with Khephren Thuram and Youssouf Fofana mentioned as possible future Reds.

There is a suggestion that Liverpool will allot a fair amount to the pursuit of reinforcements.

Liverpool linked with $100 million Swedish striker

Former Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres is attracting massive interest from the Premier League with Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly joined by Liverpool in seeking the Swedes signature.

He is also an incredibly gifted finisher, as seen by his amazing goal record. He has continuously received excellent crosses from out wide and precise through balls for Sporting, rewarding his teammates service with a high conversion percentage.

Gyokeres has, on average, needed fewer than five shots to score in the league this season. In addition, he’s outscoring his predicted goals by almost seven, which highlights how excellent his finishing has been lately. Additionally, his 100% success record while taking penalties has added to his total.

Gyokeres has also shown himself to be a formidable creative force this season in addition to being an offensive focal point and goal scorer.

Erik ten Hag signs new Manchester United deal https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/erik-ten-hag-signs-new-deal-manchester-united-deal-breaking-premier-league-news/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 10:45:18 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2133917 Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension that keeps him at Old Trafford until 2026, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

R5 Million Cash up for Grabs on Aviator with Betway

There had been intense speculation over the Dutchman’s future after a poor 2023/24 Premier League campaign but he guided the club to FA Cup success against Manchester City.

It was widely leaked in the British media last month that after a review by the club’s new part-owner, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, Ten Hag would be staying at the club.

Erik ten Hag admitted there’s ‘work to be done’

“Erik ten Hag has extended his contract as Manchester United men’s first-team manager until June 2026,” Manchester United said in a statement.

The former Ajax manager, whose deal had been due to expire in 2025, admitted there was work to be done to close the gap on United’s Premier League rivals.

“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” he said.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles.”

Dan Ashworth, Manchester United sporting director, said: “With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

“While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes.”

31 points behind Manchester City

Ten Hag, 54, ended a six-year trophy drought for United in his first season by lifting the League Cup in 2023 and finished third in the league, encouraging fans that they might launch a Premier League title bid in 2023/24.

But they lost 14 games and ended with a negative goal difference, finishing a whopping 31 points behind champions Manchester City.

Which English football team has the most hooligans? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/which-english-football-team-has-most-hooligans/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 14:55:15 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2001300 A new study has identified the English football teams with the most hooligans, with West Ham United topping the list.

Jurgen Klopp spotted in Liverpool as Taylor Swift claims ‘all-time’ Anfield record https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/jurgen-klopp-spotted-in-liverpool-as-taylor-swift-claims-all-time-anfield-record-ers-tour-pictures/ Sat, 15 Jun 2024 15:40:22 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2119692 Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was back at Anfield this week to watch the latest Taylor Swift concert on her Eras Tour.

According to the This Is Anfield website, the 34-year-old pop megastar claimed during the show – which was the 100th on her global tour – that she had broken Anfield’s all-time attendance record.

Jurgen Klopp attended the first of three concerts held by Swift at Anfield this week.

Heart-shaped glasses

The German’s wife, Ulla, bought tickets to see the first show, Klopp revealed during a staff Q&A in his final week at the club, also disclosing he then started singing ‘Shake It Off’ to her, as per the Athletic.

On the night itself, the German was seen getting in the mood and wearing heart-shaped glasses as he took his place in an Anfield box to watch the sold-out show.

He was part of a crowd that, according to Swift, “broke the all-time attendance record for” Anfield.

This means there must have been more than 61 905 people, the number that attended an FA Cup tie against Wolves back in 1952.

However, Liverpool simply said that there were “more than 55 000” at the stadium.

‘Taylor time’

Quoted by the official Liverpool website, Swift said on stage: “While I was walking to the stage, they pulled me aside and told me another thing you did for us tonight.

“And that thing is that you, you broke the all-time attendance record for this stadium tonight. Don’t you just love knowing there’s never been as many people in this room as there are right now? I, personally, love that feeling.”

Prior to the show, Jurgen Klopp posted a video message to his over four million followers on Instagram, showing off his new haircut and declaring he was back in Liverpool for “Taylor time”.

As reported by The South African website, Klopp joined social media – and Instagram in particular – prior to his final match in charge in late May.

He also confirmed it was his first time back at Anfield since his emotional last game against Wolves on May 19.

The German, who celebrates his 57th birthday on Sunday, said: “I’m not Taylor made obviously, but I’m Taylor ready. Let’s go to Anfield and have a good night, or a great night would be cool!”

It appears Jurgen Klopp did indeed have a great night as, the following day, he posted a photo in a pink cowgirl hat with the caption: “I guess I’m officially a Swiftie.”

Swift reportedly wowed the Anfield crowd during a three-and-a-half-hour setlist.

Four English Premier League sides interested in Bafana star? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/four-english-premier-league-sides-interested-in-bafana-star/ Fri, 14 Jun 2024 05:02:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2118424 After suffering relegation with Burnley, Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster could be set to stay in the English Premier League.

After just one season back in the big time, Foster could not prevent Burnley from suffering from the drop.

In what was a rather stop-start season for Foster, was one of the shining lights in the early stages of Burnley’s campaign. He was a regular contributor to the goal scoring column before requesting a break from the game. For this, he cited mental health issues. He was then sidelined for a while by former manager Vincent Kompany. He subsequently pulled himself out of possible selection for Bafana Bafana’s Afcon squad.

Four inquired about Foster

In what caused even more of a stir and debate, Foster continued playing for Burnley and scoring. That was probably in a view to keep marketing himself should the side get relegated. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, had four English Premier League sides inquiring about his services in the January transfer window.

“Back in January, four Premier League clubs were believed to have shown interest in Burnley forward Lyle Foster. With the striker’s club officially relegated from the Premier League, Soccer Laduma spoke to insiders around which of these four clubs could still be in for the Bafana Bafana star. The likes of Brentford, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are all understood to have enquired about Foster in January. This is after the 23-year-old experienced a rich vein of form in which he scored four goals before the turn of the year, showing that he has the capacity to compete – and succeed in the toughest league in the world.

Looking to ditch Burnley for Premier League stay?

Insiders have already confirmed that Foster is keen on remaining in the Premier League and at this stage, is unlikely to follow Kompany to Germany but the next few weeks will be crucial for the forward with regards to his future and where he plays his football next season.” Wrote the publication.

It now remains to be seen if Foster can get his English Premier League wish, or go down with Burnley.

LEAVING THE CLUB? Man United manager makes Benni McCarthy plea https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/leaving-the-club-man-united-manager-makes-benni-mccarthy-plea/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 08:18:10 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2117833 Benni McCarthy recently revealed turning Kaizer Chiefs down would be difficult. Man United boss Erik ten Hag is a big fan of Benni’s work.

Man United boss wants Benni McCarthy to stay amid Kaizer Chiefs rumours

SoccerLaduma has reported that Benni McCarthy, a rumoured Kaizer Chiefs target, will stay at Man United if head coach Erik ten Hag gets his way. The 54-year-old Dutchman is on holiday in Ibiza but has met club delegates to iron out a contract extension. According to The Times, Ten Hag has asked the club to hand McCarthy a new contract. The 44-year-old attacking coach’s current terms expire at the end of June.

Ten Hag to get a new contract

Recent popular opinion dictated that Man United would dispense of head coach Erik Ten Hag. That, despite the Red Devils winning the FA Cup against Man City. However, in a fresh twist, indications are that the Dutchman will keep his job. What that means for attack coach Benni McCarthy is unclear, but Ten Hag did bring McCarthy over to Old Trafford. Are their futures necessarily linked and aligned?

MLS move on the cards?

According to Soccer-Laduma, Major League Soccer is an area of interest for McCarthy with stateside options already on the table for the 46-year-old.

“With McCarthy believed to be close to the exit door at United, the 46-year-old is understood to be weighing up his options with the MLS an avenue he is willing to explore. South Africa already has a growing contingent currently represented in the league from a players’ perspective with Njabulo Blom (St Louis City), Cassius Mailula (FC Toronto), Katlego Ntshabeleng (FC Dallas), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota FC) and Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union). From a coach’s perspective, Bradley Carnell is hoisting the flag up high with St Louis City. McCarthy is understood to have caught the eye of one or two teams, though it remains to be seen what comes of the interest. The next few weeks are set to be interesting for the former Cape Town City mentor’s future and where he will next take his talents,” wrote the publication.

Manchester United kit is Premier League’s most sought-after https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/manchester-united-kit-premier-league-liverpool-arsenal-chelsea/ Sat, 08 Jun 2024 16:10:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2011424 A new study has revealed the most in-demand football kits in the UK, with the Manchester United strips ranking as the most popular.

The research, conducted by football shirt retailer UKSoccerShop, used Google Keyword Planner to analyse nationwide searches for the shirts of Premier and Championship League teams over the last five years, identifying the teams with the most eager fans.

Manchester United ranked first with the highest number of searches for their team’s football shirt, with 321,760 searches in 2023. In fact, the team’s kit has been the most popular for the past four years, consistently receiving the most searches.

Since 2014, Adidas have manufactured the iconic jerseys, replacing Nike as their official kit sponsor. In 2023, they renewed their partnership with a record-breaking £900 million deal, extending the club’s relationship with Adidas for another 10 years.

Manchester United’s continued popularity identifies a strong connection between the club and its supporters. It’s no surprise they top the ranking as they also have the highest social media following with 63.3 million Instagram followers, revealing them as the team with the most devoted fans.

Gooners in second

Ranking in second place, Arsenal’s football shirts garnered an impressive 296,700 searches across 2023. The Gunners’ kit has firmly secured its position as the second favourite shirt, maintaining the second spot for two consecutive years.

The club’s timeless charm has made their football shirts one of the most sought-after in the UK, with fans waiting excitedly each year for the annual kit release. Arsenal’s substantial fan base is undeniably advantageous, as the team is currently second in the League table.

Liverpool in third

Ranking in third place, Liverpool’s kit was searched for over 235,000 times in 2023 alone. Liverpool is currently topping the League table and with their 44.3 million Instagram followers, there is always hope that their shirts could rise to number one next year.

Despite winning the 2022-2023 Premier League for the third year in a row, Manchester City only placed fourth in the findings, with 183,020 searches in 2023. It appears that, despite their impressive on-field performance, there is comparatively less enthusiasm among fans for wearing the team’s jerseys.

Manchester City’s ranking is even more surprising considering the presence of popular players such as Jack Grealish, who have made the team an appealing choice for fans.

Chelsea kits round out top five

Despite currently ranking tenth in the League, Chelsea’s kit was the fifth most searched for last year, with over 170,000 searches. Their dark blue kit is clearly still a favourite among football fans and the team has plenty of supporters as evidenced by their 41.6 million Instagram followers.

In sixth and seventh place are Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa football shirts, with 116,070 and 78,460 searches, respectively.

The eighth and ninth spots go to Newcastle United and West Ham United, with 69,560 and 64,340 searches across the UK in 2023, respectively.

Newcastle United’s iconic jerseys have made headlines across 2023 as the team decided to end their partnership with Castore, after multiple complaints concerning the quality of the shirts. Newcastle signed a five-year deal in 2023 with Adidas, who will be manufacturing the jerseys from the 2023/2024 season onwards.

Meanwhile, West Ham United have continued their £7million deal with kit provider Umbro.

Only just making it into the top ten, Everton football club had 38,230 searches last year for their shirts.

Premier League clubs vote against scrapping VAR https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/premier-league-clubs-vote-against-scrapping-var-wolves-latest/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 14:31:17 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2112982 English Premier League clubs voted on Thursday in favour of continuing to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system next season.

Looking to buy a good quality pre-owned vehicle, click here!

Although the statement did not contain figures for the ballot, held at the Premier League’s annual general meeting, the BBC reported that 19 of the division’s 20 clubs had voted to retain the controversial technology.

The BBC said only Wolves –  who last month called the vote to scrap the system – had backed the abolition of VAR.

The Midlands club had accused VAR of “undermining the value of the Premier League brand” after another season of several debatable decisions.

VAR introduced in 2019

VAR was introduced in the Premier League in 2019 with the aim of helping referees avoid clear and obvious errors that had marred matches in the past.

But there were numerous controversies surrounding the technology during the recently concluded 2023/24 campaign, with Premier League managers and fans growing increasingly vocal in their disdain for the system.

Following Thursday’s vote, however, the Premier League acknowledged improvements were required.

“While VAR produces more accurate decision making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters,” the league said in a statement.

Semi-automated offside technology is set to be introduced next season in the hope this will reduce the length of time needed for offside checks, while in-stadium announcements will be made where an on-field decision is changed following a VAR intervention to keep fans at stadiums informed.

Hoped to offer big screen replays

The Premier League said the “high threshold” for intervention would also be maintained.

And in an echo of how similar systems interact with spectators at cricket and rugby grounds, the Premier League added it hoped to offer big screen replays of all VAR interventions where possible.

League chiefs also said they would work with English football’s referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited, on “more robust” training to improve consistency, including an emphasis on speed in decision-making while preserving accuracy.

And the Premier League promised it would continue to lobby the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport’s global rule-making body, to allow live video and audio broadcasts during VAR reviews.

Where is former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana icon Lucas Radebe now? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/where-is-former-kaizer-chiefs-and-bafana-bafana-icon-lucas-radebe-now/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 07:16:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2107930 Lucas Radebe is the most capped player in Bafana Bafana history. He’s also a Leeds United and Premier League legend whose journey started at Kaizer Chiefs.

A Bafana Bafana icon

Lucas Radebe made 70 appearances for the South African national team and was a cornerstone of the 1996 Afcon-winning side. Radebe’s cool and composed demeanour in the centre of defence earned him a move from Kaizer Chiefs to Leeds United in 1994. In 11 years at Elland Road, he made 255 appearances for the West Yorkshire giants. He was a one-club man because he made no senior appearances at Chiefs.

Did you know?

Popular alternative rock band Kaiser Chiefs were originally named after Kaizer Chiefs Football Club. The band is inspired by Radebe, a Leeds legend. The band is from Leeds and staunchly supports the club.

“You can tell that Lucas was brought up in a team of high standards and values,” said band manager Paul Bolton.

NOBODY IS ‘TOO GOOD’ TO GO DOWN, AS LEEDS AND RADEBE LEARNED

Remember when Leeds United were in the 2001 UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Valencia with Lucas Radebe in the side? They finished fourth in the Premier League that year. However, gross financial mismanagement and a hefty wage bill slowly rotted Elland Road from the inside. A fifth-placed finish in 2002 was the start of the slide, without Champions League revenues their player salaries became unmanageable. They finished 15th in the 2002-2003 campaign before eventual relegation in 2004 after placing 19th. It took them 17 years to fight their way back to the promised land of the Premier League before again getting demoted following the 2022-23 campaign.

“Being back at Kaizer Chiefs was like being at home”

Kaizer Chiefs held a glitzy exhibition match back in December 2022 where a host of football stars came out to play. One of them was Lucas Radebe!

The Chief to be the next Safa president?

Via Goal in March:

“Absolutely, I am equipping myself [to be Safa president] and there are a lot of people that I’m talking to that are helping me with the right and relevant information,” Radebe said as per Sunday World.

“That will assist me to be ready one day. I don’t have that attitude of telling myself that I know what to do or know better because I’m Lucas and all of that.”

“Yes, some of the issues [happening at Safa] I think that they are personal,” he added.

“But to be honest, we should be going there. We should be working towards bringing people closer together.”

“Because for me, the most important thing is leaving a legacy more than anything else, and bringing progress to our football,” the Bafana legend continued.

“And how you do that is by identifying people within the structure. Bringing them closer and working on a succession plan with them.”

“Instead of bringing personal issues, of which I think is absolutely wrong. The reality is that things have changes in life, there are young presidents now with different ideas,” he concluded.

“So why can’t we change as well? Change is good and I think footballers with know-how should be involved in the game at that level.”

Benni McCarthy faces Man United exit: Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/benni-mccarthy-faces-man-united-exit-sir-jim-ratcliffes-decision/ Thu, 30 May 2024 19:44:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2107567 Benni McCarthy faces Manchester United exit as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision sparks uncertainty at Carrington. Manchester United striker coach McCarthy poised to leave amidst Erik ten Hag turmoil. Benni is on the brink of leaving Old Trafford as per The Mirror. The former Premier League striker is highly regarded by players. But he is faced by an uncertain future due to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision not to offer a new contract.

End of the road for McCarthy at Manchester United

McCarthy’s tenure at Manchester United appears to be coming to an end. As his contract is set to expire this season without a renewal in sight. This move further destabilised Erik ten Hag’s position at the club. Stripping him of one of his trusted allies over two seasons.

McCarthy, known for his playing days with Blackburn Rovers. Has not disclosed his next career step but is rumoured to be considering a return to South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs. Reflecting on this potential move, McCarthy remarked. “If the opportunity arises to coach Kaizer Chiefs, obviously you will have to sit down and think about it. Like I said, you don’t say no to an institution.”

McCarthy’s reflections on his role under Ten Hag

While Benni McCarthy faces reality , at 46, he has spoken highly of his experience working with Erik ten Hag. Last year, he shared his admiration for Ten Hag. Describing him as humble and exceptionally talented in tactics. “I think I want to learn as much as I can from this manager. He has such humility. He is humble, he is incredible, like just a complete gentleman in the game.”

McCarthy highlighted his eagerness to contribute and learn. “I like getting in early in the mornings so that I am around when the coaching staff are here. Because just the levels that we work at. It’s just learning so much. And then also contributing. I’m not just here to learn, but to contribute as well. Putting my weight in and putting in what I know about the game. So contributing as much as learning.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bold moves reshape Manchester United

McCarthy’s departure is part of a series of sweeping changes implemented by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Since his involvement with the club, Ratcliffe has introduced several significant changes. SWhich includes urging staff to resign if they are unwilling to adapt to new office-based working conditions.

A statement from the Manchester United board addressed these changes: “Whilst many have welcomed our new approach, we are aware that a number of colleagues prefer not to commit to this new way of working and are keen to understand their options. With this feedback in mind and the fact that we respect each colleague’s right to choose their approach to work, we will allow those who wish to resign now to claim their bonus early for this season if they cannot work from our offices from 1 June.”

Stay tuned as the developments at Manchester United unfold, potentially altering the landscape of the club’s future.

“The club was going through a difficult period at the time, and just speaking to him about that and learning a lot from him was amazing.”

Siya Kolisi didn’t always believe that a comeback from injury before the Rugby World Cup was possible but thanks to his wife Rachel he found the faith.

How rich is Erling Haaland: Net Worth in 2024 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/how-rich-erling-haaland-net-worth-2024/ Tue, 28 May 2024 14:50:24 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2080918 He may be just 23 years old but Erling Haaland has already made some serious money in his football career.

Haaland made a blockbuster return to the country of his birth when he signed for Manchester City.

He broke the Premier League’s single-season scoring record in his debut campaign.

Norway’s biggest sports star

Of course, Haaland is as Norwegian as they come but he was born in Leeds while his father Alf Inge was plying his trade as a far more workmanlike fullback.

Haaland looks like a Norse hero who wouldn’t be amiss on the cast of Vikings.

He doesn’t terrorise English Monasteries but English defenders might have preferred Haaland stay at Dortmund.

Haaland is already past 50 Premier League goals and scores hat-tricks for fun so it is understandable that Manchester City have forked over huge amounts to him in salary and signing bonuses.

Barcelona have reportedly made enquiries about the cost of signing Haaland. They felt that the deal was a little too rich for their blood.

Haaland has a stated interest in moving to La Liga at some stage but may need to ride out his current contract to get the move done.

How much does Erling Haaland earn?

It has been reported that Haaland earns somewhere in the region of £900k (R19.1 million) a week, or around £35m (R745 million) per season.

A modest £51 million release clause allowed Manchester City to get him away from Dortmund at a reduced rate.

Haaland was happy to join a club his father had played for and the salary package was enticing.

He benefited from a bidding war to sign him to a new boot sponsorship, eventually choosing Nike.

Haaland will reportedly earn $24 million per year from his Nike deal.

Erling Haaland has a reported net worth of $40 million (R672 million), with that figure set to skyrocket in the coming seasons.

While Haaland’s salary is likely to stay the same for a little while at least, he keeps attracting new commercial partners.

He currently enjoys sponsorship deals with Nike, Luxury watchmaker Breitling and Nordic streaming service Viaplay.

He added a lucrative partnership with Samsung to his growing list of commercial deals in 2023.

Haaland owns a stake in sports tech and nutrition company Hyperice.

Haaland is presently seeing Isabel Haugseng Johansen, a 19-year-old footballer. She played football in Bryne, Norway, as well. It appears that Haaland’s current partner would rather live a low-key lifestyle though.

Southampton promoted to the Premier League after Leeds win https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/southampton-promoted-to-the-premier-league-after-leeds-win-result/ Sun, 26 May 2024 16:27:20 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2104090 Southampton clinched promotion back to the Premier League after a one-year exile as Adam Armstrong sealed a 1-0 win against Leeds in the Championship playoff final on Sunday.

Looking to buy a good quality pre-owned vehicle, click here!

Armstrong’s first-half strike at Wembley ensured Southampton erased the bitter taste of last year’s relegation from the top-flight with an immediate return.

Victory in football’s single richest match will give Southampton an estimated £140 million windfall due to the increases in matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue for clubs who reach the Premier League.

Southampton won the 1976 FA Cup

Financial experts Deloitte say Southampton could eventually bank £305 million if they avoid relegation next season.

While the cash prize is a huge bonus, it is the prestige of competing with Manchester City and Arsenal, rather than second-tier minnows like Plymouth and Oxford, that fuelled Southampton’s hunger to regain their Premier League status after a year in purgatory.

Southampton, whose only major honour is the 1976 FA Cup, had spent 11 years in the Premier League prior to their relegation.

They will hope this success, celebrated by over 35 000 of their fans at Wembley, is the prelude to another lengthy spell among the elite.

In their first ever play-off final, Southampton made it three wins over Leeds this term despite finishing three points behind the Elland Road club in the regular season.

Saints boss Russell Martin has become widely admired for his purist passing principles and this was the 38-year-old’s crowning glory.

Martin was managing in League One with Milton Keynes Dons just three years ago, but he has transformed Southampton in his first season in charge, to such an extent that they boasted more possession than any team in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Securing promotion at Leeds boss Daniel Farke’s expense was a sweet moment for Martin after his Norwich contract was terminated by the German during their time together at Carrow Road in 2018.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Farke and Leeds, who were relegated alongside Southampton last season.

Back to the promised land

American socialite Paris Hilton and movie star Will Ferrell – a minority shareholder in the club – had made good luck videos for Farke’s side, but there was no Hollywood ending for Leeds.

On the 35th anniversary of the death of their legendary manager Don Revie, Leeds were well below their best in the club’s fourth play-off final loss.

After losing their grip on an automatic promotion place that went instead to Ipswich, the three-time English champions remain without a win at Wembley since 1992.

With Rain Man actor Dustin Hoffman watching from the stands, it was fitting that the heavens opened over Wembley as a torrential downpour hit just before kick-off.

Leeds made a fast start but Southampton weathered the storm and as the sun appeared through the clouds, they gradually took control.

Will Smallbone threatened to put Southampton ahead with a 30-yard free-kick that was clawed away by Illan Meslier.

It was a warning Leeds failed to heed as Southampton snatched the lead with a clinical raid in the 24th minute.

Eluded the offside trap

Armstrong had scored twice in the play-off semi-final win over West Brom and the striker showcased his predatory instincts again with his 24th goal this season.

Cleverly eluding the Leeds offside trap with a well-timed run, Armstrong met Smallbone’s pass with a superb strike into the far corner from 12 yards.

Leeds were rocked and Armstrong nearly struck again from another instinctive shot from Smallbone’s quick free-kick, but this time Meslier was able to parry his close-range effort.

Early in the second half, Leeds defender Joe Rodon embarked on a rampaging run that looked certain to end in a goal until Taylor Harwood-Bellis threw himself into a last-ditch block.

Leeds pushed hard for an equaliser, but Daniel James’ blast cannoned back off the bar before the winger was denied by Alex McCarthy’s stoppage-time save as Southampton celebrated their return to the promised land.

Let’s enjoy the ride as much as possible: Klopp https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/lets-enjoy-the-ride-as-much-as-possible-klopp/ Sun, 26 May 2024 14:53:38 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=394974 Manager Jurgen Klopp has called on Liverpool fans to enjoy every moment when things are going as well as they are but has urged his players to remain focused on the task at hand.

Klopp says that it is an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan and hopes his team can deliver the kind of results that keep that feeling going.

The German manager insists that Liverpool will do everything they can to end up on top in both the competitions they remain in the running for, the League and Champions League.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Leicester City Klopp said: “Let’s enjoy the moment, let’s enjoy the ride, as much as possible and let’s go for everything. We don’t set limits for us. We don’t do that, but on the other side we can’t know who will be first at the end of the season.

“I would be excited if I’m a supporter of Liverpool. Of course we have to deliver results to keep them all excited.

“Never. I don’t really enjoy that. I enjoy the work with the boys, but I don’t enjoy the situation that you can go for this or that. Last year we went to the Champions League final, did I enjoy the ride to that? Yes, after the games we had won. Before the games we were completely focused. It’s not the biggest stress in the world if you want, and I don’t feel really stressed, but it’s very intense and in a really short time.”

Klopp said delivering a Premier League title is massively important to the Liverpool squad because of how much it would mean to the club’s loyal fan base.

He added: “Prepare a couple of the best teams in the world, prepare the games against them in 2-3 days. I’ve said a lot of times football is not the most important thing in the world but in these moments of course it feels like that.

“It’s really not about me. It’s really about the supporters first and foremost because they dream so long.

“I cannot say that I dreamed 29 years for another title for Liverpool. I don’t have a clue where I was 29 years ago, but a lot of people dream of that and that’s what we try to deliver.”

Klopp admitted that he never would have conceived of his club being in the position they find themselves in now, four points clear of Manchester City with a chance to stretch that to seven against Leicester City.

He said: “If somebody would have told me at the beginning of the season we are four points ahead of [Manchester] City after playing them twice and playing Arsenal twice I would have said that is not possible. Whenever you are top of the table, it’s never important until it is a decision.”

Benni McCarthy to leave Man United on a high after FA Cup win? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/benni-mccarthy-to-leave-man-united-on-high-after-fa-cup-win/ Sun, 26 May 2024 07:36:21 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2103378 Benni McCarthy landed another piece of silverware with Man United on Saturday as they beat City to lift the FA Cup. Is it time to say goodbye?

Man United upset City to lift their 13th FA Cup

It wasn’t quite a tactical masterclass from Erik Ten Hag but it was close. Stories of Ten Hag’s imminent exit from the club dominated social in the buildup to Saturday’s final. If it was his last game in charge, the former Ajax boss produced one of his best tactical displays in one of his biggest matches. Teenagers Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho scored the goals for a counter-attacking United side while Jeremy Doku grabbed what only proved to be a late consolation for City. It was United’s 13th FA Cup win, they’re now just one win behind all-time leaders Arsenal.

BENNI MCCARTHY IS A DECORATED MAN

Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy is South African football royalty. He’s achieved some great things both as a player head coach and now in his new specialist role at Old Trafford. Let’s spin it back.

BENNI’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN FOOTBALL

BENNI THE PLAYER

  • First and only South African UEFA Champions League winner with Porto in 2004.
  • Two-time Premeira Liga winner with Porto.
  • Dutch Eredivisie champion with Ajax Amsterdam in 1998.
  • All-time leading scorer for Bafana Bafana with 31 goals from 80 caps.
  • Until 2023 when Lyle Foster made the switch to Burnley, Benni was the most expensive South African footballer of all time. He moved from Ajax to Celta Vigo for €6m in 1999.
  • Benni Scored 18 goals in 36 Premier League appearances in the 2006-07 season.
  • Champion of South Africa with Orlando Pirates in 2011-12.
  • Nedbank Cup and MTN8 winner in 2011, also with Pirates.

MCCARTHY AS A MANAGER

  • Led Cape Town City to MTN8 glory in 2018-19.
  • Guided AmaZulu into the CAF Champions League.

MANCHESTER UNITED FIRST-TEAM COACH

  • EFL Cup champion in 2023.
  • FA Cup champion in 2024.

With Erik Ten Hag likely to leave Old Trafford, it leaves Benni’s future in massive doubt.

OPEN LETTER to Benni McCarthy: Now’s the time to leave Man United https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/open-letter-to-benni-mccarthy-now-the-time-to-leave-man-united/ Sun, 26 May 2024 07:28:38 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2103382 Benni McCarthy can gladly sign off from Man United with another piece of silverware in the cabinet despite a largely disappointing season at Old Trafford.

Man United triumph over Man City to lift the FA Cup

Managerial uncertainty leaves Benni McCarthy in limbo

With Ten Hag still highly likely to leave, where does that leave McCarthy’s future as first-team attacking coach? For all of Saturday’s joy and euphoria, it won’t be lost on the United board that the Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League which is far below what’s expected. Yes, they won the FA Cup and yes, that gives them a spot in next season’s Europa League, but it can’t paper over the cracks. Ten Hag sounded resigned to his fate, but cited two cup wins and three appearances in finals as a decent record for a guy who was largely criticized. Ten Hag brought McCarthy on board, so their futures seem intertwined.

“I’ll go somewhere else and win more trophies because that’s what I do,”

ORLANDO PIRATES SECURE CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL DESPITE A POOR RESULT

McCarthy’s old club, the Sea Robbers, could only manage a 1-1 draw against SuperSport but that was enough to secure second place ahead of Stellies, who lost 2-1 at Richards Bay. Pirates and Stellenbosch finished level on 50 points but the Buccaneers boast a superior goal difference. They also have a Nedbank Cup final against Sundowns on the horizon, next Saturday 1 June.

Where do you think Benni should test out his coaching mettle next season?

Milner lauds Liverpool ability to win ugly https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/milner-lauds-liverpool-ability-to-win-ugly/ Tue, 21 May 2024 13:15:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=354558 Liverpool stalwart James Milner expects the Reds to have enough quality to see off a returning Rafael Benitez on Boxing day and credited the team’s ability to win ugly.

Benitez is at the helm of strugglers Newcastle United who arrive at Anfield 15th on the Premier League table and just five points clear of the drop zone.

Milner branded Benitez a tactically astute manager but remains convinced that Liverpool will win given their ability to break down even the most stubborn defenses in the Premier League. Only title rivals Manchester City have kept Liverpool off the scoresheet in the Premier League this season but the Reds have recorded three 1-0 wins this term.

The former England international feels that Liverpool are no longer as vulnerable to counterattacking teams and believes they will be able to outmatch Newcastle even if they park the bus.

In an interview on Liverpool’s official website, Milner said of Benitez:

“He’s obviously shown over the years that he’s very good tactically and a very good manager.

“He’ll set his team up and he’ll no doubt watch a lot of our games so he’ll know where he thinks our strengths and weaknesses are, so it’s down to us to be able to adapt.

“I think we’ve done that well this year, finding different ways to win games. You can’t always play free-flowing, attacking football and be on the front foot for 90 minutes in every game.

“It’d be nice if you could be but you can’t. You have to adapt and find a way to win and find the right way to play in each game, and that dictates how we play on the day but also how the opposition sets up and how the manager wants us to play.

“I think that’s a good quality within the group. We have that, we have different ways of playing, we can play different formations, and we have a very strong squad with a lot of good players and also players who can play in different formations and styles of play.”

Milner said that Liverpool were well aware that their start to the campaign has painted a target on the league leaders but assured fans the players were ready for the scrap.

“Liverpool’s a big club and a big scalp, and teams know what a test it is to play us and they’re going to raise their game playing against us as well,” added Milner.

“So we have to be ready for that and we know how difficult it’ll be, but hopefully our qualities come through.”

Liverpool host Newcastle on Boxing Day (26 December kick-off 17:00 SAST) before the visit of Arsenal on Saturday.

Klopp hailed Liverpool’s fans as the “superpower of world football” after his final match as manager ended in a 2-0 win at home to Wolves on an emotional day.

Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah scored the goals, but the game was largely a sideshow as supporters paid tribute to the German they have taken to their hearts.

Jurgen Klopp given guard of honour

The charismatic 56-year-old, who announced in January he was leaving the club, has forged a strong bond with the Anfield faithful, who gave him a rousing welcome as he emerged from the famous tunnel.

After full-time he returned to the pitch through a guard of honour from the players to address the crowd wearing a red top bearing the words “Thank You” on the front and “I’ll Never Walk Alone Again” on the back.

Klopp bids farewell to Liverpool after nine years in charge, having won the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, FA Community Shield, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup.

As reported by The South African website, keen to ensure his link with the city endures long after he leaves Merseyside, Klopp ignored his suspicion of social media by unveiling his own Instagram account on Saturday.

The account is called ‘Kloppo’ and labels him ‘the normal one’, in a reference to former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s self-styled ‘special one’ nickname.

Jurgen Klopp’s social media venture gained nearly 2.2 million followers since his debut post – a typically emotional video address to Liverpool fans.

Liverpool have appointed 45-year-old Feyenoord coach Arne Slot as the club’s new coach from next season.

Trevor Noah on tour

Klopp exchanged a few words with Noah – and urged him to follow him on the social media platform.

‘You can speak in a German accent!’ Klopp quipped, referring to Noah’s sketches at his attempts to learn German.

‘You ready? I’ll show you on the Instagram program,’ Noah replied before Klopp told him: ‘Follow me!’

Noah is set to embark on his ‘Off The Record’ Tour next month, starting in Singapore on 3 June.

His arrival in Europe comes 12 days later, as he’ll first perform in Stockholm.

The South African comedian, Primetime Emmy Award winner and former The Daily Show host will be in Germany on 1 August, first in Berlin before back-to-back nights in Stuttgart on 3-4 August.

Introducing you to the latest Arsenal wonderkid.

ARSENAL PRODIGY CHIDO OBI IS ON FIRE

16-year-old Arsenal academy talent Chido Obi has found his shooting boots in spectacular fashion. The 1.88m tall youngster, born in Denmark to Danish and Nigerian parents, is the latest name on the lips of Gunners fans around the world. Obi scored seven times in the Arsenal U18s 9-0 win over Norwich. He scored 10 goals in a 14-3 win over the Liverpool U16 side in November. Clearly, this kid knows the way to goal. Overall he has 29 goals in his last 11 games for the Gunners. Remember his name, because it’s one that might feature for the senior side next season in domestic cup competitions. Her scored a hat-trick in a recent North London Derby.

Arsenal hope for a Man City slip on the final day

The senior Arsenal side go into the final day of the campaign still hopeful of winning their first title since 2004. However, they must beat Everton and hope that Man City slip up against West Ham. Both sides are at home and City are two points ahead of Arsenal but the Gunners do have a superior goal difference by two.

BURNLEY’S RELEGATION FROM THE PREMIER LEAGUE CONFIRMED

The Clarets lost 2-1 at Tottenham, confirming they’ll be a Championship club next season. Vincent Kompany’s team struggled to impose their possession-based style on the top flight this term. They were often getting caught out making mistakes in their own third.

BAFANA STAR LYLE FOSTER SHINES FOR THE CLARETS DESPITE HEARTBREAK

Despite their relegation, former Orlando Pirates man Lyle Foster has been a key operator for them this season. In a campaign which was interrupted by his personal mental health issues, the 23-year-old has still racked up 22 EPL appearances with five goals and three assists. Burnley’s final game is at their home, Turf Moor, against Nottingham Forest.

What time will the Premier League title be decided on Sunday? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/epl/what-time-will-the-premier-league-title-be-decided-on-sunday-19-may-manchester-city-arsenal-result/ Sun, 19 May 2024 09:50:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2097894 Pep Guardiola urged history-chasing Manchester City to seize their title “destiny” as the battle for Premier League supremacy reaches a thrilling climax on Sunday, 19 May.

Guardiola’s all-conquering team go into the final day of the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal thanks to an eight-game winning streak.

Manchester City host West Ham knowing a win will seal an unprecedented fourth successive English title.

Costly defeat

Arsenal have been near flawless themselves in 2024, with 15 wins and one draw, away to Manchester City, in 17 league matches.

However, the Gunners’ costly 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa last month looks set to be decisive in a thrilling title race that also involved Liverpool until their recent stumbles.

Arsenal, who finished second last year, must beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium and hope Manchester City fail to win if they are to end their 20-year wait for the title.

Guardiola doesn’t expect a favour from Everton, who have nothing to play for, and will instead focus on ensuring his players finish the job themselves.

“The destiny is in our hands, but if you are thinking that Everton are going to do something, forget about it. I have seen Arsenal all season,” he said.

“We just focus on what we have to do against West Ham. There is not any contamination in my brain about anything other than what we have to do to beat West Ham.”

Not for the first time, Manchester City have been at their relentless best in the intense heat of the run-in.

Guardiola’s men have dropped just six points since mid-December, in draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

As Manchester City close in on a sixth title in seven seasons under Guardiola, the competitiveness of the world’s most-watched league has been questioned.

But the Catalan coach has hit back at suggestions the Premier League has become boring and that Manchester City’s dominance is thanks purely to the financial muscle of their Abu Dhabi-based owners.

“It’s not boring, it’s difficult,” Guardiola said.

Arsenal have set a club record by winning 27 Premier League games this season, but that still might not be enough to dethrone Manchester City.

“We have to give ourselves the opportunity to live a beautiful day on Sunday, where the dream is still alive and is possible,” Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said.

“It’s football and once we are there we just have to live the moment.”

Manchester United face Euro exile

There will be an emotional farewell for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at the end of his memorable nine-year reign, but the Reds will finish third regardless of their result against Wolves at Anfield.

“I spoke before about how hard it will be to say goodbye,” Klopp said.

“I love absolutely everything about this place, I do. I take memories with me, fantastic memories, I take relationships with me forever.”

Manchester United are at risk of missing out on European football altogether after a miserable season.

Erik ten Hag’s men sit eighth and must better Newcastle’s result at Brentford when they visit Brighton to avoid finishing outside the top seven for the first time since 1990.

Tottenham visit relegated Sheffield United knowing a point is enough to guarantee fifth spot, while in-form Chelsea would secure a top-six finish with a draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The top six teams will all definitely qualify for Europe, while seventh could be enough as long as Manchester United do not shock Manchester City in next week’s FA Cup final.

At the bottom, Luton will be relegated if they fail to beat Fulham or if Nottingham Forest avoid defeat at Burnley.

Even if Luton win and Forest lose, the Hatters’ vastly inferior goal difference means they need a mathematical miracle to survive.
