In some cases, that might not be a bad thing.

Kaizer Chiefs’ search for strikers continues

With manager Nasreddine Nabi categorically ruling out moves for Fiston Mayele and Percy Tau the options keep getting thinner but maybe these two aren’t the right fit anyway.

Mayele is unproven in South Africa

Yes, 30-year-old Fiston Mayele has proved himself to be a lethal striker on the African continent but South Africa is a different kettle of fish. His track record is undeniably impressive; 14 goals and four assists in 25 Caf Champions League matches, and 54 goals under Nabi across two seasons with Young Africans. It’s impossible to argue against his calibre. However, the price tag and the massive wages should be a significant deterrent. Also, factor in that he’ll need time to settle into a new country and tactical philosophy. Before the end of next season, he’ll already be 31.

Nasreddine Nabi’s transfer wishlist: Who’s still missing?

Percy Tau presents the same issues

A month older than Mayele, moving for Tau would also be a massive risk. His wages are exorbitant and seem to blow Chiefs out of the water before negotiations begin. He reportedly pocketed R23.2m annually in the first year of his current deal with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Monthly, that’s roughly R1.93m a month. The annual figure could rise to R31m in the third year if he sees it out. The former Sundowns, Brighton and Anderlecht man is demanding a massive payout from Ahly to be released from his contract but then any buying club will need to shoulder a significant signing-on fee.

Betway Prem looms large

The Glamour Boys kick off the 2024-2025 season with a trip to Marumo Gallants. The promoted Limpopo side will be fired up, but then again so will former Gallants marksman Ranga Chivaviro who’s playing for his Amakhosi future.

Do you think Tau has anything to offer Chiefs at his age or has his ship sailed?

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015 which was also their most recent piece of major silverware.

Nasreddine Nabi warns Kaizer Chiefs fans ahead of new season https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/nasreddine-nabi-warns-kaizer-chiefs-fans-ahead-of-new-season/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 03:31:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166857 Kaizer Chiefs’ new coach Nasreddine Nabi has made it clear to fans that he won’t say what they want to hear.

The 58-year-old Tunisian coach took over from Cavin Johnson last month following the club’s disappointing 2023/24 season. Having completed his assignment with Moroccan side FAR Rabat, Nabi brought four assistants to Naturena as he looks to transform the club’s fortunes.

Kaizer Chiefs have not won any silverware in nine years however Nasreddine Nabi is not making promises. The Soweto giants only have three trophies to fight for this campaign having failed to qualify for the MTN8.

Speaking to the media last month, the former Young African coach said it was important to be firm and honest with the management and supporters.

We need a very real strategy, we need to be honest with ourselves and our supporters,” said Nabi.

Nasreddine Nabi has already made five new signings at Kaizer Chiefs

“We have to go forward without any emotions, and with a lot of realism.

“When we have analysed what we have, and put a strategy together of how to drive the club forward … then we should get somewhere.

“I do not want to be making promises or making declarations. I won’t just be a populist, making fans hear what they want,” the Tunisan coach said as per Citizen.

Nasreddine Nabi spent three weeks with Kaizer Chiefs in Turkey during their pre-season. His first televised match in charge was a 4-0 defeat against Yanga FC last month in the Toyota Cup.

Nabi not making any promises but what should be his mandate?

Keagan Dolly’s insight could revive Kaizer Chiefs trophy drought! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/keagan-dollys-insight-could-revive-kaizer-chiefs-trophy-drought/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:42:08 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166845 Keagan Dolly’s insight could revive Kaizer Chiefs trophy drought, as per Kick Off

For nearly a decade, Chiefs have struggled to claim silverware, and former midfielder Dolly sheds light on why this might be happening. Dolly, who departed the club in the off-season, believes that the Chiefs need a major overhaul to reignite their competitive edge. He identifies several key issues contributing to the club’s trophy drought, starting with the high turnover of players.

One major factor in the Chiefs’ failure to secure titles is the lack of a stable core squad. Dolly points out that every successful team has a consistent group of players, something the Amakhosi have lacked for years. “I’d probably look after the players a bit more, protect them from social media and what’s been said about them when things are not working out,” Dolly explained in an interview on 947’s MSW. The constant influx and exodus of players prevent the team from building the necessary cohesion and familiarity.

Unlocking potential: Key to Kaizer Chiefs’ revival

Dolly also highlights an intriguing phenomenon why players who were exceptional at their previous clubs struggle to perform at Kaizer Chiefs. He believes that the club’s environment does not sufficiently shield players from external pressures. “I’d probably, firstly, make them safe at the club, not add more pressure. I would make the environment where the players themselves feel that they are home and they are working together,” Dolly said. He advocates for a nurturing environment that allows players to integrate gradually. Instead of being thrust into the limelight too soon.

Chiefs’ failure to qualify for the MTN8 cup competition underlines the urgency for change. This could have been their first chance at silverware this season, highlighting the pressing need for a strategic overhaul.

Major move: ‘Tera’ Maliwa joins Kaizer Chiefs

In a bid to turn things around, Kaizer Chiefs have made a strategic hiring decision by bringing in Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns. This esteemed scout’s arrival is set to transform the club’s scouting and recruitment processes. Enhancing their ability to attract top talent and potentially reignite their pursuit of trophies.

By addressing these critical issues and leveraging new talent. Kaizer Chiefs could be on the path to ending their lengthy trophy drought.

Stay tuned with The South African for more updates. As Keagan Dolly gives some insight, as to how the sleeping giant can get back to the top.

Kaizer Chiefs lose 3-0 at FNB https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-lose-3-0-at-fnb/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:20:32 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166841 Nasreddine Nabi’s Kaizer Chiefs have been playing plenty of friendly matches behind closed doors. The latest was on Thursday afternoon.

KAIZER CHIEFS LOSE 3-0 TO TS GALAXY

With a little over two weeks left before the start of the Betway Premiership, Amakhosi took on Sead Ramovic’s Rockets at the FNB Stadium. The result was a 3-0 win over the Soweto giants, thanks to goals from Sphiwe Mahlangu, Puso Dithejane, and Thokozani Sibanyoni.

LEONARDO CASTRO WARNS GASTON SIRINO

Kaizer Chiefs supporters are super excited about Gaston Sirino at Amakhosi. Leonardo Castro has meanwhile warned the Uruguyan.

Finding out about Sirino’s move, Castro, who played at Sundowns before switching to Naturena, has revealed his warning to Sirino.

“Moving to Chiefs is all part of the job, which has come after a successful stay at Sundowns, where they always have a lot of players,” Castro told KickOff.

“I have told Gaston the truth about Chiefs, and he knows it. Chiefs is a club that will treat you well and Gaston has already felt it.

“Truth is that if Chiefs want to play with youngsters, then it is going to be difficult to compete against [the] experience and quality of Sundowns, who are competing in North Africa,” the Colombian added.

“You cannot be celebrating kasi football players at Chiefs because that is for Sunday League football and not professional soccer.

“Soccer is about being quick in making decisions and some of the players need to have the hunger and desire to see themselves moving beyond Chiefs,” Castro continued.

“Siyabonga Ngezana and Njabulo Blom were also listening and worked hard to move it abroad, but other players are still just enjoying being there even when not playing regularly.

“There are players with talent but no ambition at Chiefs. I was there at Chiefs and was honest about this and with the coach that they have now [Nasreddine Nabi], their fans deserve happiness now,” the Colombian added.

“It still hurts me that I never won trophies at Chiefs after losing the league title in the last game and lost the Champions League final,” Castro concluded.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ FIRST FIVE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP FIXTURES

Pre-season will eventually end for Amakhosi. With around two weeks to go, here’s a look at Kaizer Chiefs’ first five fixtures for the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership.

The Soweto giants will start the season on 14 September in Bloemfontein. It is where Marumo Gallants have decided to play their home games at the Toyota Stadium this season.

Match day two will see Amakhosi host a home game against Stellenbosch FC on 22 September. The third game will be a trip to Durban’s AmaZulu on 25 September, before the fearsome champions Mamelodi Sundowns visit the Glamour Boys at the FNB Stadium on 28 September.

Another loss for Kaizer Chiefs as top target signs new contract https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/another-loss-for-kaizer-chiefs-as-top-target-signs-new-contract/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 19:19:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166826 It appears as if Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on another target after Riaan Hanamub penned a new contract with AmaZulu.

Amakhosi have been looking to sign the 29-year-old Namibia international after failing to capture Stellenbosch star player Fawaaz Basadien. Chiefs are currently looking to strengthen their defence, especially in the left-back position.

Kaizer Chiefs target extend contract with Usuthu

Usuthu announced last week that they were willing to sell Hanamub to Chiefs but but for a good price. According to GOAL, Amakhosi offered AmaZulu R3 million for the Namibian star but the KZN outfit turned the offer, demanding at least R10 million.

On Thursday, AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed that the Kaizer Chiefs target signed a new contract.

“Yes, he has signed a new contract with us, which is for a further three years,” Zungu told SABC Sport.

“We never received an offer in writing. This contract (for Hanamub) was something already in the pipeline.”

Kaizer Chiefs target Riaan Hanamub signs a new contract with AmaZulu.

With Hanamub having penned a new deal, Kaizer Chiefs will now have to look elsewhere. Zungu has made it clear that the club will not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave.

“We are not a team that stands in the way of players, if he comes to us and says he wants to leave, we let him go,” Zungu said on Isolezwe. Before signing a new contract, Hanamub declared his desire to stay with Usuthu despite Kaizer Chiefs rumours.

Who should Chiefs sign next with Hanamub out of the picture?

Broos gives TWO reasons why Percy Tau failed to make the cut https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/bafana-bafana/broos-gives-two-reasons-why-percy-tau-failed-to-make-the-cut/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 17:58:47 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166819 Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained why he omitted striker Percy Tau in his squad.

The 72-year-old named his 23-man squad to play Uganda and South Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Tau has had a tough season with Al Ahly and also struggled to find his form in the national team.

In the past nine months, the star has received criticism from fans. Broos admitted leaving Percy Tau was a tough decision but explained two reasons the striker was left out.

“Percy Tau…It was not an easy decision for me to not select him but there were two things I took into account. First of all, Percy receives a lot of criticism at the moment when he plays for Bafana Bafana so I try to protect him and support him,” Broos told SABC Sport.

Broos on Percy Tau’s form at Al Ahly

“For the game against Algeria, he wasn’t there but then you saw the game against Nigeria again it was the same thing. So they don’t like him for the moment and they expect too much from him.”

Since Broos took over, Percy Tau has been one of his trusted players. Since this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, the 30-year-old has never been the same, failing to find the net in seven previous matches.

“Secondly, his situation at Al Ahly at the moment is not clear. There are rumours that he is going to leave, and that there is a problem with the transfer fee, since the beginning of August, he only played 17 minutes. The situation is not great and I was a bit afraid with all that…Percy at the moment is not ready.”

With Pery Tau failing to make the team, Broos has decided to go with Iqraam Rayners and Lyle Foster upfront.

“We need the players that are ready, not only physically but mentally,” said the Bafana coach.

Will Tau rediscover his form?

Why Kaizer Chiefs should give this defender a chance, says Spurs coach https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/why-kaizer-chiefs-should-give-this-defender-a-chance-says-spurs-coach/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 15:01:43 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166675 Cape Town Spurs assistant coach Vasili Manousakis says Kaizer Chiefs should give defender Rushwin Dortely a chance.

The 22-year-old signed with Amakhosi last month from Spurs. Having captain Bafana Bafana at Cosafa Cup, the young defender brings calm and leadership to the Chiefs side that is short of confidence.

He along with Inacio Miguel and Bongani Sam are the only defenders Amakhosi bought so far. Manousakis believes the defender will thrive at Kaizer Chiefs if given a chance.

“I’m very proud of him and they (Chiefs) are getting an absolutely astute professional player on and off the pitch. I think that number one, is the work and dedication he puts in. He’s naturally talented,” said Manousakis as per The Citizen

“He’s still young and he can play at left centre back and left back because he’s so versatile. He has pace, strength, and height. He captained Bafana Bafana at the Cosafa Cup and that talks about his leadership qualities. That is what Chiefs are getting and if they give him a chance, they will be happy with every cent they have spent.”

Kaizer Chiefs new defender Rushwin highly praised by ex-coach

Amakhosi only kick off their season next month and it remains to be seen if Dortely could force his way into the starting eleven.

“He loves to score, especially in set-pieces when he gets himself up there. Physically, he has tremendous aerial powers and has an incredible strike on him if he gets near the box. He loves a goal and he sometimes thinks that he’s a striker – he’s not but he’s a great kid and has a fantastic future ahead of him,” he explained.

“The moment he does that then he should not have any worries about the pressure. He’s a good player and he needs to have crocodile skin and be thick-skinned and turn himself away from the noise and focus on football.”

The defender still has age on his side and is the only Kaizer Chiefs player in Hugo Broos’ Bafana team.

How good is Rushwin?

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos praises Kaizer Chiefs’ new boss! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/bafana-bafana-coach-hugo-broos-praises-kaizer-chiefs-new-boss/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:49:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166748 Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos recently shared his candid thoughts on Kaizer Chiefs’ new head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, following a chance encounter. Broos, surprised to discover that Nabi was living in the same building as him, quickly expressed his admiration for the former AS FAR coach.

“When I came back from Belgium, I didn’t know he was living in the same building as me,” Broos recounted as quoted by FARPost

“Someone from Kaizer Chiefs came to me and said, ‘Coach, the coach [of Kaizer Chiefs] wants to speak to you’. He was sitting there, and he was drinking coffee.” This unexpected meeting led to a positive exchange, with Broos praising Nabi’s coaching abilities. “I think he’s a very good coach,” Broos said. “I think when you see what’s happening at Chiefs, it’s a different thing.”

Kaizer Chiefs’ busy transfer window and Nabi’s leadership

Kaizer Chiefs have been active in the transfer market, aiming to bolster their squad with several key acquisitions for the upcoming season. The club has signed Miguel Inacio from Petro de Luanda, former Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino, Bafana Bafana defender Rushwin Dortley, Bongani Sam from Orlando Pirates, and Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy. Broos believes Nabi’s assertive nature will play a crucial role in his success at Chiefs. “He wants what he wants,” Broos observed. “It’s maybe a little bit easier for him to achieve that in Chiefs. Because it’s not easy to be a coach of Chiefs. And I think it’s not so easy for a South African coach to slam on the table and say, ‘I want that’.”

Broos is hopeful about the future of Kaizer Chiefs under Nabi’s guidance. “It’s not normal that a team like Chiefs is seven or eight in the league. It’s not good for South African football.” He anticipates a competitive season with Chiefs potentially challenging for the title. Alongside top teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, and Stellenbosch FC. “This is a big progression that happens for South African football and not the dominance of one team like we’ve seen in the last [seven years],” Broos concluded.

Chiefs’ 2024 season opener

Kaizer Chiefs will kick off their new campaign on September 14 against Marumo Gallants at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. As Nasreddine Nabi begins his tenure with the Glamour Boys. He will be eager for a strong start to the new Betway Premiership season.

Stay tuned  with The South African for more updates as Bafana Bafana coach shows great appreciation for Nabi.

There is only one official online Springbok store, with access to official clothing and licensed supporter items and where orders and deliveries are guaranteed. It is located at the official SA Rugby online store.

“They cut-and-paste genuine marketing material from our apparel partner Nike and our own online store to pass themselves off as official – offering discounted prices.

Kaizer Chiefs: Bad news for Castillo, club gives up on Fiston Mayele https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-international-star-dumped-club-moves-from-mayele/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:20:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166090 Kaizer Chiefs have to improvise with their major striker targets that are unattainable. There’s also bad news for Edson Castillo.

Castillo is out in the cold for Venezuela and Kaizer Chiefs

30-year-old midfield dynamo Edson Castillo made his debut for La Vinotinto in June 2021. That’s almost three years and three months ago. In that time, he’s only collected nine caps. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduce that Edson Castillo isn’t a key part of the Venezuela setup. He wasn’t in their Copa América squad and isn’t part of the latest squad to face Bolivia and Uruguay. His last competitive action was in November 2023 when he played only 11 minutes across TWO World Cup qualifiers. Before that, the last sniff of game time he got was in October 2021 when he got 25 minutes against Brazil in a World Cup qualifier. Is this a blessing in disguise for Chiefs though? Castillo has battled to reproduce the form he showed at the start of his tenure at Naturena. With international distractions and travel issues off the table., perhaps he can flourish again.

Is Mzise the answer for Chiefs?

After a long and fruitless pursuit of 30-year-old Congolese marksman Fiston Mayele, it seems as though Chiefs have identified a younger alternative. 20-year-old Tanzania and Yanga striker Clement Mzise has a solitary cap for his country. He also has significantly lower wage demands than the coveted Mayele, not to mention he’d command a transfer fee that’s a fraction of Mayele’s.

The Betway Premiership transfer window shuts on 20 September.

Kaizer Chiefs raid Sundowns to beef up their technical team https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-raid-sundowns-to-beef-up-their-technical-team/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:17:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166723 Kaizer Chiefs have appointed Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa as their new Head of Scouting and Recruitment. He was with Sundowns for nine years.

Kaizer Chiefs beef up their technical team

After nine successful years with Sundowns, Thembela Maliwa has swapped Chloorkop for Naturena and become the new head of Scouting and Recruitment.

What Maliwa said via the club’s official website:

“We all know what a big, great Club this is. I am really happy to be here,”

“I am here to try to take the Club to another level in terms of scouting and recruitment. My plan is to identify and bring in the players that will take Amakhosi back to the glory days.”

What did Kaizer Jr say?

“The importance of getting recruitment right cannot be overestimated. Identifying and procuring players with the right profile to fit our process is key to success and with Tera onboard, I am very confident that his wealth of knowledge and experience in the field will add value to our organisation and ultimately strengthen the team,” said Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr.

“We welcome him to Kaizer Chiefs and look forward to working with him.”

Bafana Bafana squad includes Kaizer Chiefs star Dortley

One player who Chiefs have recently recruited is Rushwin Dortley. He’s the only Amakhosi star in the final 23-man group. Bruce Bvuma and Spiwe Msimango were in the preliminary squad but haven’t made the final cut. He’s still only 22, but Dortley is a massive prospect. He’s in the strange situation where he’s highly likely to make his full Bafana debut before pulling on a Chiefs jersey for the first time, with Afcon qualifiers on 06 and 10 September against Uganda and South Sudan. This guy has unique and coveted attributes, including a superb left foot and ball-playing ability.

  • Chiefs vs Sundowns – Saturday, 28 September, FNB Stadium, 15:00

Orlando Pirates new star draws English interest! https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/orlando-pirates-new-star-draws-english-interest/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 14:16:42 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166722 Orlando Pirates new star draws English interest after half a season, according to Soccer Laduma.

After only half a season with Orlando Pirates, midfielder Thalente Mbatha has already captured the attention of European clubs. Insiders reveal that two teams have shown interest in the former SuperSport United star, including a notable club from the English Championship, which has expressed strong interest.

The buzz around Mbatha began following his impressive performances during the pre-season in Spain. Initially, three clubs inquired about the KwaZulu-Natal-born midfielder, but now the primary interest comes from a Championship club. “It all started when they came back from the pre-season in Spain. There were actually three teams at first which showed interest in him, but for now, I can tell you that the main one is from the Championship. Those ones have even inquired about him and could soon make a follow-up,” said the source. The potential selection for the Bafana Bafana squad could further boost his chances of moving to Europe, although the exact club remains undisclosed.

Pirates’ stance on Mbatha and Mabasa amidst rumours

Despite the European interest, a second source indicates that Orlando Pirates are unlikely to part ways with Mbatha at this stage. “You see, as for Mbatha and Tshegofatso Mabasa, the club is not ready to release or sell them at this time. They are part of the team’s backbone going forward, and both the technical team and management want to have them in the team as they fight to win trophies, mainly the league and go far in the CAF Champions League. So, yes, I can tell you there is interest, but letting him go will only happen if the money is really good,” the source explained.

In related news, Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa, previously linked to moves to Romania and Mamelodi Sundowns, is now drawing significant interest from a North African club. Sources close to Mabasa and Pirates reveal that this North African team has been closely monitoring his performance and is preparing to make an offer. The club’s officials recently watched Mabasa play against Disciples FC during the CAF Champions League second leg at Orlando Stadium. “They have been looking at his progress for some time now. They have been monitoring him and his performance and are happy about it,” said the source. The North African club’s name remains confidential to avoid disrupting the ongoing process.

Transfer strategy and future prospects

As both Thalente Mbatha and Tshegofatso Mabasa attract interest from European and North African clubs, Orlando Pirates face critical decisions regarding their future. The club’s ability to retain these key players will play a crucial role in their quest for domestic and continental success.

Two BIG players missing from the Bafana Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/bafana-bafana/big-absentees-bafana-bafana-squad-kaizer-chiefs-dortley/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:12:04 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166603 Percy Tau is not in the final Bafana Bafana squad for Afcon qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan while Kaizer Chiefs star Rushwin Dortley is in the group.

Bafana Bafana omit Tau for Afcon qualifiers

Percy Tau has been omitted from the Bafana Bafana squad for qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan in September with an injury. Skipper Ronwen Williams also misses out with a knock. Hugo Broos has instead opted for Themba Zwane, Oswin Appollis, Patrick Maswanganyi, Iqraam Rayners, Elias Mokwana, Relebohile Mofokeng and Lyle Foster as the options in the final third.

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs represented

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, midfielder Thalente Mbatha and attackers Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are the Orlando Pirates players to get call-ups. Mofokeng was on the score sheet on Wednesday as Pirates battled to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-final first leg. Meanwhile, talented 22-year-old Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is in the group.

Foster is Bafana’s priciest-ever player

According to media reports on X, newly-promoted Ipswich Town are negotiating a long transfer for Lyle Foster with an obligation to buy. The 23-year-old Soweto-born striker scored five goals and supplied three assists in 24 Premier League appearances last term. Foster has 12 caps and four goals for South Africa. The obligation to buy figure is £25m, roughly €30m or R594 million.

Benni McCarthy was formerly the most expensive South African footballer ever when Celta Vigo paid Ajax €6m (R113 million) for his services. After Benni, Joburg-born playmaker Steven Pienaar was the second-most expensive when 2011 he moved from Everton to Tottenham and fetched a fee of €3.6m (R67.6 million). The guaranteed fee that Burnley will pay to Westerlo for Kyle Foster’s services has shattered the record held by Benni since 1999. The Clarets paid €7m upfront, with a further €4m of add-ons triggered because of their promotion to the EPL. Foster’s move amounted to a staggering R225 million, but now his value is estimated at €13m (R257 million).

If Foster’s proposed move to Ipswich goes through, he’ll shatter his previous record.

All Blacks coach: We’ll see if Rassie has rhythm https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/all-blacks-coach-robertson-well-see-if-rassie-erasmus-has-rhythm/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:25:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166595 Rassie Erasmus’ Springbok side currently sit at the top of the Rugby Championship log, but they will now face a massive challenge in the form of back-to-back Tests against the All Blacks.

First up, the Springboks will play New Zealand in Johannesburg this weekend before a ‘rematch’ in Cape Town on 7 September.

It will effectively also see a clash between two of the most highly-regarded coaches in the game, Rassie Erasmus and Scott Robertson.

Both coaches have great respect for each other, and are known for their unique personalities, with Robertson fondly renowned as a celebratory breakdancer with the Crusaders.

During a press conference this week, the All Blacks coach was reminded that perhaps the one thing that Erasmus can’t do, is breakdance. Responding with a smile and a chuckle, he commented: “That’s a good point. We’ll have to see what rhythm he’s got.”

On a more serious note, though, he said there was no doubt that Rassie had set a ‘benchmark’ as a coach.

“We shared a few beers and a few stories after the games over the years. We just have a good little rapport that you’re sort of connected in,” Robertson told reporters on Thursday.

“You watch players go into their coaching after they’ve played and you look to his journey and how he’s got to where he’s got to where he’s got, it’s a pretty remarkable story isn’t it? He won a couple of World Cups… he’s got seven forwards on the bench and it’s awesome.

“He’s one of the benchmarks, yeah, for sure,” he added. “You have all that success, you’ve got to respect that.”

Rassie’s reputation precedes him

Looking ahead to the upcoming blockbuster clashes, Robertson has opened up about what he was expecting.

“They’ve got a clear DNA, South Africa,” Robertson said in assessing his next opponents. “They’ve been pretty innovative and have evolved really well in the last few games, so that’s the exciting part.

“You get to see enough of them in Test footy and you see how [Erasmus’] mind works. He’s pretty special. They’ve got a great group there, so they’re going to be a great Test matches.”

The All Blacks will be touring South Africa for just the third time since Erasmus took charge of the Boks in 2018.

“They’re just a different challenge,” Robertson added. “They’re set-piece orientated, but can get you in some great kick battles and put pressure [on you] in different ways. It’s a little bit different to [playing in] Lautoka [in Fiji] or playing at Suncorp.

“[There’s the] Highveld, there’s conditions, there’s all those factors that come with it. You do miss it, because it’s a different challenge, but it’s an exciting one.”

Kaizer Chiefs fans question Makaab’s player recommendations https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-fans-question-makaabs-player-recommendations/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:21:44 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166577 Kaizer Chiefs fans question agent Mike Makaab’s player recommendations. What you need to know according to Kick Off

Recent criticisms from Chiefs supporters have raised questions about renowned agent Makaab, with fans accusing him of favouring Mamelodi Sundowns over Kaizer Chiefs. Makaab, a prominent figure in football management, recently sparked speculation by suggesting he had offered a striker to Chiefs, without disclosing the player’s identity. This led to widespread speculation that Togolese forward Yawo Agbagno of ASO Chlef might be the player in question due to his links with Amakhosi.

Makaab reveals details on player offers and rebuffed talent

In response to the allegations, Makaab disclosed that Chiefs had turned down a striker he considers the best on the African continent. Despite his assertion, Chiefs fans have remained unconvinced, arguing that Makaab consistently directs top talent from his agency to Sundowns. To counter these claims, Makaab highlighted instances where he offered high-profile players to Chiefs, including Andile Jali, who left Belgian club KV Oostende in 2018, Sibusiso Vilakazi from Bidvest Wits, and Sipho Mbule from SuperSport United.

“I cannot force any football club to sign a player,” Makaab stated during an interview on Gagasi FM. His comments emphasise the limitations of his influence over club decisions, despite his efforts to provide quality options.

Kaizer Chiefs’ goal-scoring challenges

Kaizer Chiefs have struggled with their goal-scoring capabilities. Netting only 25 goals in 30 league matches last season, which averages out to 0.8 goals per game. This lack of firepower contributed to their disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premiership. The club’s efforts to address this issue through new signings have been lacklustre. With their most notable acquisition being 33-year-old Gaston Sirino, which has left fans concerned about the team’s attacking prospects.

The recent 4-0 defeat to Young Africans in the Toyota Cup pre-season tournament has intensified concerns about the team’s offensive strength. Chiefs’ inability to secure their primary target, Fiston Mayele from Pyramids FC, adds to their difficulties. Reports now suggest that they are competing with Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club for the services of Yanga SC forward Clement Mzize. Who joined them under former coach Nasreddine Nabi.

The search for a prolific striker

As the transfer window continues, Kaizer Chiefs are under pressure to find a prolific striker who can resolve their scoring issues. And ultimately improve their league standing. Fans and analysts are closely watching to see if the club can successfully recruit the right talent. That will turn their fortunes around and make a stronger push in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned  with The South African for more updates as Kaizer Chiefs fans continue to question agent on social media.

FIVE Orlando Pirates players in the final Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/five-orlando-pirates-players-final-bafana-squad-news/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:13:59 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166565 Five Orlando Pirates players have made the final Bafana Bafana squad for Afcon qualifiers in September.

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, midfielder Thalente Mbatha and attackers Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are the players in question. Mofokeng was on the score sheet on Wednesday as Pirates battled to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-final first leg.

Exciting personnel at Pirates

Dancing Angolan right-winger Gilberto arrived at the club for R11 million in late June and finally made his competitive debut in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg draw with City. Thabiso Monyane played right-back with Van Rooyen ineligible and Thabiso Lebitso nursing an injury. Monyane, unfortunately, has missed out on this final Bafana squad after being named in the preliminary group.

Former Pirates man Foster is heading back to the EPL

Meanwhile, over in England, newly-promoted Ipswich Town is negotiating a long transfer for Lyle Foster with an obligation to buy. The 23-year-old Soweto-born striker scored five goals and supplied three assists in 24 Premier League appearances last term. Foster has 12 caps and four goals for South Africa. The obligation to buy figure is £25m, roughly €30m or R594 million.

Bucs to wield the axe

According to SoccerLaduma sources, Pirates will sell or loan out as many as seven players before the new season. Sphamandla Gumede, Sandile Mthethwa, Bandile Shandu, Siphelo Baloni, Katlego Otladisa, Azola Tshobeni and the returning Goodman Mosele are all on the chopping block.

“They want to cut the squad to a sizeable one at least between 30 and 32 players, and now the team has over 40. That’s why they’re looking at letting some of them leave,” their source said.

Orlando Pirates finished the 2023-2024 DStv Premiership campaign in second place, earning a spot in the 2024-2025 Caf Champions League. Jose Riveiro’s team also won two major honours, beating Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 finals. Riveiro’s mandate will be to dethrone Sundowns and deliver the first top-flight league title for the Buccaneers fans since 2012.

Exciting Kaizer Chiefs star makes final Bafana squad https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/exciting-kaizer-chiefs-star-makes-final-bafana-squad/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:50:30 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166532 New Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is in the final Bafana Bafana squad to face Uganda and South Sudan in September.

Bafana Bafana squad includes Kaizer Chiefs star Dortley

Rushwin Dortley is the only Chiefs star in the final 23-man group. Bruce Bvuma was in the preliminary squad but hasn’t made the final cut.

Intel: @UnplayableZA / X

New-look Kaizer Chiefs defence?

Inacio Miguel, goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari and left-back Bongani Sam and Dortley should Chiefs them a more resolute unit. Gaston Sirino arrives from Sundowns to pick a few passes, but who will stick those chances in the net? Chiefs have shifted their attention to another Young Africans striker after their pursuit of Fiston Mayele has seemingly hit a dead end. The man in question is 20-year-old Tanzanian forward Clement Mzisi. Born in 2004, Mzisi has one cap for Tanzania earned in September 2023. This after mooted moves for Fiston Mayele and Percy Tau haven’t borne any fruit. Mayele bagged 54 goals in two seasons under the tutelage of Nasreddine Nabi. Across all clubs, Mayele has 14 goals and four assists from 25 appearances in the Caf Champions League, Africa’s elite club competition. Chiefs will be disappointed to miss out.

Rushwin Dortley bio

  • Date of birth: 02 May, 2002
  • Place of birth: Cape Town
  • Age: 22
  • Height: 1.92m
  • Preferred foot: Left
  • Position: Central defender
  • Playing style: Technically gifted ball player
  • Strengths: Passing, composure, versatility
  • Weaknesses: No significant weaknesses, but aerial duels are not the strongest side of his game despite his impressive height and strength

John Plumtree takes over Sharks Currie Cup campaign https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/currie-cup/john-plumtree-takes-over-sharks-currie-cup-campaign/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:42:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166508 Sharks coach JP Pietersen has returned to his Under 21 duties with their campaign continuing again this week, while head coach John Plumtree takes over the reins for the remainder of the Currie Cup.

Plumtree has brought in some of his players currently in Vodacom United Rugby Championship preseason training, as well as selecting new signings Ruan Dreyer at prop, Emmanuel Tshituka at flank and Jordan Hendrikse at fullback.

Nick Hatton leads as John Plumtree takes Sharks helm

Nick Hatton continues in his role as captain, leading the side as he has so well all season.

He will call on the experience of players both in the starting lineup and off the bench, certainly the return of wing Makazole Mapimpi from the Springboks is a big boost, as are the likes of young Ethan Hooker, James Venter, Fez Mbatha, Dylan Richardson and Vincent Tshituka.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks are back at Hollywoodbets Kings Park for the final two rounds of the Carling Currie Cup competition, hosting the NovaVit Griffons on Saturday in the penultimate pool match.

With six players absent through injury the depth of the Sharks squad will be on display in Durban.

The Sharks are third on the overall log and second in the group heading towards the final two rounds of action. The heat will be on the Durban side with competition for playoff places really heating up. The Pumas remain hot on the heels of the Sharks.

As things stand the Griffons are well out of contention for a semi-final place but would love to cause problems for the Sharks on their own patch.

Saturday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park kicks off at 13:00.

South Africa have 28 athletes at Paris 2024 Paralympics

As reported by The South African website, South Africa will be represented by 28 athletes in nine different sports codes.

Para-athletes are placed into different events depending on their mobility, coordination, absence of limbs, or visual impairment.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) has promised Team SA’s Paralympians the same financial incentives for winning a medal as their Paris 2024 Olympic counterparts.

Para-athletes who win gold will receive R400 000, while their coach will earn R100 000.

Silver medallists and their coaches will be awarded R200 000 and R50 000, respectively, while the bronze medal payouts will be R75 000 for athletes and R25 000 for coaches.

Given the unique nature of the Paralympics, guides for visually impaired athletes will also receive the same payouts as the coaches who earn a medal.

Meanwhile, incentives will also be different for Boccia, a precision ball sport for neurological conditions related to cerebral palsy, where para-athletes will earn:

R200 000 per athlete and R100 000 for the coach for a gold medal

R100 000 per athlete and R50 000 for the coach for a silver medal

R40 000 per athlete and R20 000 for the coach for a bronze medal

At the most recent Paralympics in Tokyo, Team SA finished 34th in the final medal table with seven medals, made up of four golds, one silver and two bronzes.

Steven Mendes also known as “Stevie G”, the teenage sensation from Kaizer Chiefs, has completed a major transfer to Swedish club Hammarby IF. The move, finalised before the August 26th transfer deadline, sees Mendes join a club with a rich footballing heritage and ties to legendary striker Ibrahimovic, who holds a 23.5% ownership stake in the club.

Hammarby’s historic prestige and Mendes’ new opportunity

Hammarby IF, a renowned name in Swedish football, carries a deep legacy with its history of winning the Allsvenskan and reaching the Svenska Cupen finals on five occasions. The club’s storied past and current ambitions make it an ideal setting for Mendes to continue his development. The presence of Ibrahimovic, a towering figure in world football, adds an extra layer of prestige and excitement to Hammarby’s future plans.

At only 15 years old, Mendes has already made significant strides in his career. His tenure at Kaizer Chiefs was highlighted by an impressive tally of 20 goals in 34 games for the Gauteng Development League team. Reflecting his exceptional technical abilities and sharp shooting skills. His performances have drawn widespread acclaim, with observers noting his composure in front of goal, his intelligent passing, and his readiness to contribute defensively. Mendes’ ability to score even in challenging situations, as demonstrated by his goal for South Africa against Ivory Coast, underscores his potential as a top talent.

Agent Andrew Matjila praises his versatility

South African agent Andrew Matjila, from Living the Dream Sport Agency, commended Mendes for his versatility. “He’s a versatile midfielder, comfortable playing as a box-to-box 8 or a creative 10,” said Matjila. “At just 15, turning 16, his finishing ability and eye for spectacular goals stand out. Moving to Europe now is crucial for his development. We’ve seen how West African talents have flourished in Europe’s top leagues from a young age. And the positive impact on their careers is undeniable.”

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly included sell-on and first refusal clauses in Mendes’ transfer agreement. Highlighting their confidence in his ability and future success. This strategic move ensures that the club can benefit from Mendes’ rise in the European football scene. The transfer to Hammarby is viewed as a pivotal step in Mendes’ career. Offering him a platform to showcase his talents and further his development on a broader stage.

How Etzebeth inspired Springbok newcomer https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/springboks/how-eben-tzebeth-inspired-springbok-newcomer-dixon/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:17:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166477 Earlier this week it was confirmed that Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been cleared to face New Zealand in Johannesburg on Saturday, with the powerhouse forward slotting in among the ‘bomb squad’.

When Etzebeth comes on, it will mark his 125th in the green and gold jersey, which will see him leapfrog Bryan Habana as the second most capped Springbok of all time and take one step closer to Victor Matfield’s Springbok Test record of 127 caps.

At the other end of the spectrum, Ben-Jason Dixon will feature in just his fourth Test at flank, and he highlighted how inspirational it was to have Etzebeth back in the squad.

“What stood out for me the first time I chatted to Eben was the way he got himself up for games and his competitiveness and desire to win,” said Dixon.

“The more experience he gets, the hungrier he gets to win, and he wears his heart on his sleeve in the way he plays, so I definitely feed off that energy as a player. Having him in the squad simplifies my job a little bit too.”

Etzebeth’s presence will be a major boost for the Springboks

The Springboks wrapped up their main on-field preparations for the match on Wednesday and will have Thursday off to rest before their traditional captains run on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rassie Erasmus released four players – Steven Kitshoff (prop), Manie Libbok (flyhalf), Canan Moodie and Makazole Mapimpi (both wings) – to their provincial unions on Wednesday afternoon to get game time in the Carling Currie Cup this weekend.

New signing to help Sundowns strikers https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/new-signing-to-help-sundowns-strikers/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:15:40 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166462 Former Mamelodi Sundowns stirker Katlego Mashego, has given his signing on the Iqraam Rayners signing.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS ANNOUNCE IQRAAM RAYNERS

After finishing last season with 14 goals for Stellenbosch FC, Kabo Yellow have signed the 28-year-old Michells Plain-born star. “𝙄𝙦𝙧𝙖𝙖𝙢 𝙍𝙖𝙮𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙈𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙙𝙞 𝙎𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙨.𝙏𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 𝙒𝙀 𝙇𝘼𝙉𝘿,” Kabo Yellow announced. “Bafana Bafana International Iqraam Rayners has joined The Brazilians on a long-term deal!”

KATLEGO MASHEGO RATING

Meanwhile, Katlego Mashego, believes that Rayners will put positive pressure on the existing strikers Peter Shalilule and Arthur Sales.

“It’s a good signing for Mamelodi Sundowns, top quality striker even in our national team. It’s a good buy, and it’s good for Iqraam as well. It shows that Sundowns needed a striker,” Mashego told FARPost.

“He got the edge; he’s where he needs to grow and become more competitive. He has the speed and eye for goals.

“I don’t want to get into the dynamics of how Sundowns need to play, but Iqraam being there, I think it’s also good for Peter Shalulile and Arthur de Oliviera Sales.

“Now there will be competition, whether they play together or if another one will be on the bench waiting for his opportunity to play,” the former Sundowns attacker concluded.

Speaking on New Zealand’s most prominent rugby talk show, The Breakdown, a visibly annoyed Kirwan hit out at the strength of South Africa’s bench, saying he is going to boo at the television when the Springboks introduce their substitutes against the All Blacks.

Chiefs have pulled off a significant move by hiring Thembela ‘Tera’ Maliwa, the esteemed scout previously with Mamelodi Sundowns. This strategic acquisition promises to reshape the club’s scouting and recruitment strategy, bolstering their efforts to attract top footballing talent.

Maliwa to take charge of Chiefs’ recruitment strategy

Thembela Maliwa’s recent resignation from Mamelodi Sundowns marks the beginning of a new chapter at Kaizer Chiefs. As the new chief scout, Maliwa will spearhead the club’s recruitment efforts, bringing a wealth of expertise and an extensive network across Africa and beyond. This publication can confirm that Chiefs are positioning Maliwa to revitalize their scouting operations, leveraging his deep connections and extensive knowledge of the footballing landscape.

Maliwa’s track record is impressive. Known for his exceptional ability to identify and nurture emerging talents, he has become a respected figure in the scouting community. His career began at Ajax Cape Town, where he was instrumental in discovering several young stars, including current Mamelodi Sundowns defender Rivaldo Coetzee. Maliwa’s keen eye for talent soon led him to work with globally renowned clubs like Ajax Amsterdam and Heerenveen, before his notable seven-year tenure at Sundowns.

Tera’s impact and legacy in scouting

During his time at Ajax, Maliwa’s role extended beyond scouting to coaching. Where he played a crucial part in developing future stars such as Stellenbosch FC’s Jayden Adams and Luke Le Roux, as well as Tashreeq Matthews, now at Sundowns. His multifaceted experience adds significant value to his new role with Kaizer Chiefs. This diverse background in both scouting and youth development will play a crucial role in enhancing Chiefs’ ability to identify and recruit top talent.

Maliwa bid farewell to Mamelodi Sundowns with a heartfelt message: “Thank You, Mamelodi Sundowns FC. It’s tough to say goodbye after seven unforgettable years at the club. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the Mamelodi Sundowns football family for this long.” He expressed his gratitude to the club’s management, the Motsepe family. And the passionate Masandawana fans, reflecting on the impactful journey he had with the club.

Stellies tactician reacts to win over Sundowns https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/stellies-tactician-reacts-to-win-over-sundowns/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 10:03:58 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166436 Steve Barker says that while they are happy with the result, Stellenbosch FC still have work to do to knock Sundowns out of the MTN8.

Stellies hold a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg of the MTN 8 semi-final.

The Winelands side will play the ‘home’ leg in Durban, taking away from the advantage they might have gleaned.

However Fawaaz Basadien’s second half spot-kick ensures they have a tangible edge with the one goal lead.

Where will Stellies finish in the Betway Premiership?

Stellies delighted to hold the edge over Sundowns

The well-orgnanised side will take some beating at Moses Mabhida stadium.

“Obviously delighted with the scoreline and result, it’s never easy to come to this stadium and play such a talented and quality team, and come away with a clean sheet and win,” said Barker.

“I just felt that we started the game really well, and we were a little unlucky with one or two transitions not to get an early goal, I think our tactical awareness and discipline was really spot on this evening.

“I thought our tactics of trying to deny them opportunities to control the game totally, we tried to be on the front foot and not allow them to have time and space, and utilise the quality they have on the ball.

“So it was never going to be easy to do that for 90 minutes, obviously they’re good enough that in certain situations we pressed and they came out, and we looked a little bit vulnerable, but I can only commend the team for their attitude and commitment this evening.”

Ready to suffer

“I knew we were going to have to suffer during periods of the game, and the players knew it, and those periods of suffering just unites us as a team, and just shows the character this team has.

“And we had to show that in periods of the game – especially the last 15-20 minutes, when Sage Stephens had to pull off some really big saves, so congratulations to him.

“But overall, I think we created enough of our own opportunities and I would like to see the second penalty shout – how close that was or not.

“But to now go away – or ‘home’ [in Durban] for the second leg with an advantage is a big plus for us, but we’re very mindful it’s only ‘half-time’.”

Stellenbosch FC face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-final second leg on Sunday 1 September.

Will Stellies win the first trophy of the season?

“With this been said Stanley will be our new team captain for the upcoming season. We wish Stanely continued success in his career, both in domestic competitions and on the international stage. We look forward to achieving great things together in the seasons to come.”

Kaizer Chiefs shift to young talent after striker chase hits snag https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-shift-to-young-talent-after-striker-chase-hits-snag/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:34:29 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166401 Kaizer Chiefs shift to young talent after striker chase hits snag, according to Soccer Laduma

Chiefs are actively pursuing a new striker to bolster their squad, but their primary target, Fiston Mayele, remains elusive. Reports suggest that with Mayele’s move in jeopardy, Chiefs have turned their attention to Young Africans’ standout, Clement Mzize.

Insider information reveals Chiefs’ new striker strategy

Recent insights from sources close to the situation reveal that Kaizer Chiefs have shown interest in Clement Mzize, a 20-year-old striker from Yanga SC. Although discussions are underway, the transfer hasn’t materialised yet. The club is facing challenges securing their top choices, which includes both Mayele and Botswana international Tumisang Orebonye from ASFAR of Morocco.

“The coach has emphasised the need for a striker, and with their main targets proving difficult to secure, they are now considering Mzize. They are working tirelessly to land Mayele or Orebonye, but if those deals fall through, Mzize is a viable alternative. The current squad features Christian Saile and Ashley Du Preez, who are more suited to wing roles, while Ranga Chivaviro is the only experienced outright striker,” said a source familiar with the team’s plans.

Why Clement Mzize could Be Kaizer Chiefs’ game-changer

The same source elaborated, “Kaizer Chiefs are focused on winning trophies and need a reliable goal-scorer. If they can’t land Mayele or Orebonye, Mzize could step in and fill that role. The club has already made inquiries about his availability, and if other options fall through, they are prepared to move forward with Mzize.”

A second insider has revealed that Kaizer Chiefs are also bracing for potential departures of current players. “The club is considering loaning out Saile, and Du Preez might move to Portugal. Therefore, Chiefs need to explore replacements before the transfer window closes at the end of September. Clement Mzize is among the options they are evaluating. And could be an affordable solution,” the source noted.

As the transfer deadline approaches, Kaizer Chiefs are keeping all options open, with Clement Mzize emerging as a key target if their primary targets remain out of reach.

Kaizer Chiefs: Five biggest flops the club signed in the past decade https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-five-biggest-flops-the-club-signed-in-the-past-decade/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:26:23 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166220 Kaizer Chiefs have made big signings over the past seven years but some of the players were PSL’s greatest flops.

With Stuart Baxter leaving Amakhosi in 2015, the team was dysfunctional which forced the club to rebuild under a new coach Steve Komphela. Over the next nine years, the club changed coaches regularly but success eluded them.

Samir Nurkovic remains the club’s best signing in close to a decade. The Serbian striker scored 13 league goals in his first season with Amakhosi but that was not enough to help his side win the league.

Who are the biggest flops Kaizer Chiefs have had in years?

Gustavo Paez

The 34-year-old Venezuelan striker joined Chiefs in 2017 but failed to live up to expectations. Having played for Spanish side Mallorca, many expected the South American striker to fire, but he only netted seven goals in 47 appearances. He was eventually released in 2019 and replaced with Nurkovic.

Bhongolwethu Jayiya

Jayiya was one of the biggest flops of the 2017/18 season and never really fitted for Kaizer Chiefs. The winger was lethal at Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape Town but failed spectacularly at Chiefs.

Edmore Chirambadare

Chirambadare was signed from Chicken Inn but did nothing for two years before he was released.

Lazarous Kambole

Having scored 39 goals in 56 matches for Zambian giants Zesco United, Amakhosi thought they found another Collins Mbesuma. Kambole turned out to be another flop for Kaizer Chiefs, scoring only two times in his three-year stay at the club.

Jasond Gonzalez

The tall Colombian striker joined Chiefs on loan from Real Santa Cruz. Molefi Ntseki looked up to him to help Amakhosi with their goal-scoring woes but the striker found the going tough.

Kaizer Chiefs have signed yet another South American this season. Having left Mamelodi Sundowns, Gaston Sirino joined Amakhosi on a free transfer.

Why are Chiefs not finding a perfect striker?

How bookmakers reacted to Eben Etzebeth’s late inclusion https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/springboks/how-bookmakers-hollywoodbets-reacted-to-eben-etzebeth-late-inclusion-all-blacks-result-exclusive/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 09:10:52 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166368 Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth was cleared to face New Zealand at Ellis Park on Saturday some 24 hours after he was excluded from the official team announcement.

According to coach Rassie Erasmus, after Etzebeth completed all the training sessions earlier this week and was drafted onto the replacements bench for the Rugby Championship encounter.

Kick-off is at 17:00.

Could pass Bryan Habana

Etzebeth replaced Marco van Staden on the bench, which offers the team specialist lock cover for the starting combination of Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ruan Nortje.

Should he get game time, the Test will mark Etzebeth’s 125th in the green and gold jersey, which will see him leapfrog Bryan Habana as the second most capped Springbok of all time and take one step closer to Victor Matfield’s Springbok Test record of 127 caps.

“Our selection policy has always been that if a player does not train on a Monday he will not play on Saturday, but Eben has made it through training pain-free all week, so we had to make the tough call to name him in the squad at the expense of Marco,” said Erasmus.

“There were back-up options for us at lock in the initial squad, but with Eben on the bench it means we have another specialist in that position in the team.

“We are blessed to have an expanded squad of about 45 players who have all bought into our plans and who understand what’s best for the team, and it’s admirable how Marco accepted the news. It shows the quality of the player and person he is.”

Leading South African bookmakers Hollywoodbets were quick to react to the news of Etzebeth’s late inclusion – as well as the naming of the All Blacks matchday squad on Thursday.

The Springboks are now 7/20 favourites for the match, while the All Blacks can be backed at 24/10.

The draw after 80 minutes is on offer at 20/1.

In terms of handicap, the Springboks are seen to be 7.5-point favourites.

Reminder: Where Springboks sit on Rugby Championship log https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/rugby-championship/reminder-where-springboks-sit-on-rugby-championship-log/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:54:31 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166340 The Springboks will host the All Blacks at Ellis Park in Johannesburg in their next Rugby Championship match on Saturday, 31 August at 17:00, while Argentina will welcome Australia to La Plata on Sunday, 1 September at midnight (SA time).

From a South African perspective, the good news is that the Springboks are very well placed on the current standings, having claimed back-to-back bonus-point victories over Australia to start their campaign.

The Springboks are five points clear of New Zealand at the top of the standings, with a superior points differential of 20.

It really means that only a massive All Blacks victory this weekend could displace the Springboks from top spot, but the hosts will of course be targeting a result that could put them into a position of even more ascendancy as they look to secure an elusive Rugby Championship title.

Here is where the Springboks sit on the Rugby Championship log

Meanwhile, the Springboks are also well-placed in the World Rugby rankings.

A victory by 15 points or fewer for the Springboks will see their points tally grow by 0.26 points. Similarly, a defeat by that margin will see New Zealand’s points total drop by 0.26 points.

A win by 16 or more points for the Springboks will see them gain 0.39 points – and the All Blacks lose a similar tally.

draw would see South Africa lose 0.74 points, but stay top, while in such a scenario the All Blacks would pick up 0.74 points, but stay third.

However, a win for New Zealand by 15 or fewer points would see them pick up 1.74 points (and the Springboks lose 1 points), and move to eighth place, with the Springboks dropping to second spot.

A victory by 16 or more points for the All Blacks would see them pick up 2.74 points, but again keep them in third place. The Springboks would again slip to second spot.

‘Bring back Rulani’: Sundowns fans after losing to Stellenbosch https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/bring-back-rulani-mokwena-mamelodi-sundowns-loses-stellenbosch-manqoba-mngqithi/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:44:11 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165766 Mamelodi Sundowns fans criticised Manqoba Mngqithi following their 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch on Wednesday, 28 August evening.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS LOSES TO STELLENBOSCH

Fans of the football club, Mamelodi Sundowns blamed head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi for the team’s defeat against Stellenbosch in the first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Fans of the football club took to social media on Wednesday to slam Mngqithi and compared him to Rulani Mokwena, who parted ways with Sundowns in July 2024.

The football club confirmed in June 2023 that Mokwena signed a 4-year contract extension with Mamelodi Sundowns until 2027.

FANS: ‘RULANI WAS THE BEST’

@asandajongi: “I feel for Steve and Manqoba at #Sundowns. I don’t see them doing well at all this season. This will prove that in as much as I hate to say it, #Rulani was the best fit for them. Not taking the credit away from Stellies, brilliant performance.”

@JoeFerg58678029: “Honestly, Sundowns looks very ordinary and beatable since Rulani left.”

@WilliamMosetja: “No lie detected. Sundowns doesn’t have a sting as usual. We must apologise to Rulani.”

@Eli200421511630: “Rulani wasn’t appreciated say it as is. Same way middendorp was fired after topping the log.”

@asandajongi: “I fully agree with you brother, I didn’t like the guy because of what he did at pirates, maybe we didn’t give him enough time but now I fully agree that he’s one of the best.”

@Llekamania_: “We sacked coach Rulani Mokwena because he didn’t win CAF CL. I don’t know if the football I watched today is capable of defending the league title let alone win the CL.”

@JoeFerg58678029: “Manqoba will be demoted again after an MTN8 exit, but this time there’s no Rulani to save him from a permanent exit at Sundowns.”

Rulani’s club announce former Sundowns star https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/rulanis-club-announce-former-sundowns-star/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:21:01 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166275 Mamelodi Sundowns’ former goal machine, Cassius Mailula has moved to Morocco to join Wydad Casablanca at the age of 23.

WYDAD CASABLANCA ANNOUNCE CASSIUS MAILULA

After only making eight appearances for Toronto which included two goals, Mailula has joined Wydad on a loan deal. “Honored to join this legendary club. The journey begins now,” Mailula said via the club’s media.

AUBREY MODIBA PLAYS IN CENTRAL MIDFIELD

Mamelodi Sundowns star Aubrey Modiba has said his new position is not foreign to him.

With the exit of coach Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi taking charge, Modiba has been moved from left-back to central midfield.

“I’m familiar with the role, the games that we played in the African Football League (AFL), I played that role as an eight,” the Polokwane-born Modiba said via the Sowetan.

“It is not a position that is foreign to me; as an inverted full-back, I used to overload in the midfield. I think I’ve done well, and the coach thinks I can help the team in that role. and I am prepared and learning every day about the role. Hopefully, I can be better and help the team as much as I can. I’m enjoying the role.”

Meanwhile, Sundowns take on Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 semi-final leg this evening at 19:00 from the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STAR TEBOHO MOKOENA ON HIS FUTURE

Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Teboho Mokoena sealed a massive contract. Is the overseas dream over?

Mamelodi Sundowns superstar Teboho Mokoena will belong to Kabo Yellow until the age of 32 unless someone buys him out before 2029 or an unexpected contract termination occurs.

There’s an expression in football: tying down a player. This is it. Kabo Yellow recently announced a new contract extension for the 27-year-old midfielder Mokoena. It is a whopping five-year deal. The decision comes after the Bethlehem-born star was linked with clubs in Asia, Europe, and North Africa.

“We are delighted to confirm that midfielder Teboho Mokoena has signed a contract extension until 2029,” Sundowns announced via X.

Meanwhile, Mokoena has been asked if his dream to play overseas is over or not?

“The dream [to play in Europe] is still very much alive; we still have [FIFA] Club World Cup. So yeah, we will see what happens,” said Mokoena.

“I’m happy to be at the club; the reason I signed the contract is because I know the project of the club, and I wanted to be part of the project. So it was an easy decision for me to stay here because we still have the Club World Cup, we still have CAF [Champions League], and we still have AFL. We still have Bafana,” the Sundowns maestro concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs: What went wrong for Sifiso Hlanti https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-what-went-wrong-sifiso-hlanti/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:20:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166272 Signed in 2021 Sifiso Hlanti was hyped as the missing piece of the puzzle for Kaizer Chiefs but his time at Naturena delivered few highlights.

Kaizer Chiefs released Hlanti during the winter transfer window ahead of the current season.

His departure came even as then club were thin on the ground for left-backs especially those that are naturally left-sided.

Sifiso Hlanti gets dumped by Kaizer Chiefs

When the end came it was with a whimper as Hlanti claims he was told he would be assessed by Nasreddine Nabi only to be released alongside three other older players.

“Chiefs said the new coach would assess Hlanti, but he didn’t even train and be seen by any member of the new technical team when Chiefs called him this week to say that his contract will not be renewed,” his agent Sizwe Ntshangase told Metro FM.

“Chiefs didn’t engage with me about not renewing Hlanti’s contract but they met with him directly. The team told Hlanti that he served them well this season in the last week of the games, but they said they will have to wait for the incoming coach to come assess him and make a decision.

“We did engage the club to try find out where they headed with Hlanti and what their thinking is, but we were not getting a direct response. As an agent, you say to your player, let us talk men to men and you agree how you both want to proceed in terms of the career direction given that the contract is coming up for expiration,” he concluded.

Always fading

Once the first choice left-back for Bafana Bafana, Hlanti had slipped some distance from his best by the time of his release.

Kaizer Chiefs fans wouldn’t ever get to see the best of Hlanti with the versatile fullback playing just 51 Premiership matches across three seasons at the club.

The pressure of playing for Kaizer Chiefs coupled with a lack of patience from managers who were all under pressure from the word go saw Hlanti gradually fade.

His market value plummeted having reached its peak when he joined Kaizer Chiefs.

It didn’t help that he suffered an Achilles tendon rupture in November 2021 which officially put him on ice for ten games but impacted his career on a much greater scale.

Hlanti has seen his career frequently hampered by injury and when Chiefs signed him at the age of 31 they had to be aware that they were taking a big risk.

He would never really find a way to become the club’s first-choice left-back despite competing mostly with youngsters.

The final nail in Hlanti’s coffin came when the club lined up a ready replacement in Bongani Sam, with the 27-year-old fullback holding the promise of growing into a stalwart down that left flank.

Chiefs released Hlanti days before signing the former Orlando Pirates man.

What went wrong for Sifiso Hlanti at Kaizer Chiefs?

This one might not even be on Hlanti if we are honest. Kaizer Chiefs signed a player who had already peaked and wasn’t getting any better.

Hlanti’s impressive efforts for Bafana Bafana should have been counterweighted by the fact that he has always been a player who has struggled to stay fit. He could give them great individual performances but was never likely to be consistently good week in and week out. His efforts in keeping Mohamed Salah quiet when Bafana Bafana faced Egypt won his great plaudits but he would never match that output at Chiefs.

He was erratic, and though he offered great versatility as someone able to play at left-back, centre-back and on the left side of midfield even that was a poisoned chalice as coaches preferred to have him on the bench rather than starting.

Hlanti was a Kaizer Chiefs flop, mainly because the club itself didn’t do their homework.

Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Three players https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-transfer-news-three-players/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:05:46 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166234 We’re almost three months into the transfer window. Kaizer Chiefs have signed four new players and a few more are expected. Here’s our weekly feature on the latest reports since last week.

NO NEW SIGNINGS THIS WEEK

Following the signing of Miguel Inacio from Angolan giants Petro de Launda last week, Kaizer Chiefs have not managed to get another deal over the line.

Instead, coach Nabi has told the media that Amakhosi are not looking at Percy Tau and Fiston Mayele.

“There are no negotiations with Percy Tau because I believe he still has one year left on his contract,” Nabi told OnTime Sports, as per FARPost.

“Kaizer Chiefs respects the FIFA rules. If ever there’s an opportunity to sign him, it will be through official channels. We respect Al Ahly, they are a great team,” Nabi said.

On Mayele, the Tunisian tactician said: “He’s like family to me; we worked well together [at Young Africans],”  Nabi told OnTime Sports, as per FARPost.

“But he has a contract with Pyramids, and he’s not available.

“We respect that and have not engaged in any negotiations,” the Kaizer Chiefs mentor concluded.

ASANELE VELEBAYI

Then there is Asanele Velebayi. Speaking to the media after selling Ashley Cupido when he had previously said the shop is ‘closed,’ – Cape Town Spurs chairman Alexi Efstathiou has sent an idirect message to Kaizer Chiefs on Velebayi.

“To answer your question regarding that the ‘shop is closed’, it is. We have to continue to operate as a club and focus on the challenge before us and that is to compete on the field not off it,” Efstathiou told iDiski Times‘ Sinethemba Makonco.

“In the meantime, if someone knocks on the door, as Stellenbosch did, there will be someone to open.

“Last we looked outside, there was nobody standing there and knocking!” Efstathiou concluded.

The opening ceremony was focused on the Place de la Concorde, with the first of the 549 gold medals to be awarded on Thursday.

Paris 2024 Paralympics will see 4 400 athletes compete

Team SA has three codes in action on the opening day of action – archery, swimming and boccia.

The city, which has just come off a successful staging of the Olympics, will play host to 4 400 Paralympic athletes from 184 delegations as they celebrate the commencement of 11 days of competition.

Para-athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo and para-swimmer Kat Swanepoel were joint flag-bearers for South Africa as the waiting for them, and millions of observers from around the world, was finally over.

The ceremony again took place outside the confines of a stadium, with athletes parading down the famous Champs-Elysées, culminating in a celebration and official opening of the Paralympic Games at the iconic Place de la Concorde in front of thousands of spectators.

The Artistic Director for the Ceremonies at the Olympics and Paralympics, Thomas Jolly, said the spectacle “showcased the Paralympic athletes and the values that they embody.”

He described the concept as “first and foremost a magnificent source of inspiration”.

As with the Olympics, South Africa jumped to near the front of the list of parading nations, behind Afghanistan, because its name in French is Afrique du Sud.

They therefore slotted in ahead of Algeria, Germany, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba and Austria.

The evening was graced by more than 600 guests that make up the Vodacom Bulls, Vodacom Bulls Juniors and Bulls Daisies family as well as other stakeholders to the Blue Bulls Company (BBCo) coming together to celebrate rugby excellence.

“Our ladies have gone on to achieve a remarkable feat in being crowned back-to-back champions as they define what professional women’s rugby looks like in South Africa, whilst the senior men have made us all proud with Grand Final and Quarterfinal appearances in the European-based competitions.

“The junior system continues to be the best in the country, producing quality rugby players who have featured for the Junior Springboks and also outstanding graduates who feature prominently in our senior teams,”

“Congratulations to all the winners and their teammates because they all have done themselves and everyone under this franchise proud.”

All Blacks name side to tackle Springboks at Ellis Park https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/rugby/rugby-championship/all-blacks-name-side-to-tackle-springboks-at-ellis-park-breaking-result-score-time-venue-date/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 07:40:35 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166216 Former captain Sam Cane was named on Thursday in the All Blacks team to face South Africa in a crunch Rugby Championship match while Scott Barrett returns from injury to skipper the visitors.

All Blacks won on last visit to Ellis Park

Cane was named at openside flank for the Test at Ellis Park on Saturday, his first start for New Zealand since he was shown a red card in the Rugby World Cup final defeat to the Springboks last October.

“Sam has been incredible off the field for us. It’s an opportunity for him to be that Test veteran we need with that experience and calmness,” All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson told reporters.

The 32-year-old Cane replaces Dalton Papali’i, who is sidelined by a thumb injury.

Barrett will captain the All Blacks having missed the two recent home Tests against Argentina with a finger injury.

New Zealand won on their last visit to Ellis Park when flyhalf Richie Mo’unga kicked 15 points to seal a 35-23 win in 2022.

“Ellis Park is an iconic ground, with the whole experience you want as many players as you can who have experienced it before,” Robertson said.

“There will be some tough moments out there. They know what it takes.”

South Africa and New Zealand will meet again in Cape Town on September 7.

South Africa lead the championship table after back-to-back wins over the Wallabies in Australia.

New Zealand are second following a win and a defeat in their home Tests against Argentina.

South Africa have included fit-again Eben Etzebeth on the bench as a late call-up. The veteran lock had initially been left out of the matchday squad with a minor back injury.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus says double World Cup winner Etzebeth has recovered fully and will provide cover off the bench at lock.

Flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit will start in the second row for South Africa due to an injury crisis in that position.

Kick-off is at 17:00.

‘We couldn’t contain them’ – Riveiro on Pirates’ draw with Stellies https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/we-couldnt-contain-them-riveiro-on-pirates-draw-with-stellies/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 07:34:48 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166150 Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro said his side struggled to contain Stellebosch FC in the second half of their MTN8 semi-final clash on Wednesday evening.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final at the Cape Town Stadium. Although the Buccaneers opened the scoring in the early 15 minutes, the home side rallied back to force a draw.

Speaking after the match, Riveiro said Pirates controlled most of the first half which allowed them to find the opening goal.

“It was one-half for each team, but I think the first one was also not 100% for us. I think in the first half, Pirates had more control and were clearer about what we wanted to do,” he told SuperSport TV.

“Sipho Chaine intervened two times in the first-half but it was more of our mistake, not that Cape Town City was creating [chances].

The Buccaneers were under pressure in the second half and in the 62nd minute, Jaedin Rhodes found the equaliser for Stellies. Riveiro admitted that Pirates couldn’t contain Stellies charge in the second half.

“In the second-half, we lost control in the 15 to 20 minutes, until they scored we couldn’t contain them and we were defending too low.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro happy with a draw

“We were not really doing what we wanted and we couldn’t manage to stop them until they scored but I think late in the game we had a couple of opportunities to get more advantage. But it’s 1-1, I think it’s going to be good on Saturday,” he added.

Riveiro will be hoping to reach his third MTN8 final in a row as Pirates and Stellenbosch meet again on Saturday in the second leg.

Sundowns is too big for Manqoba Mngqithi, says Junior Khanye https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/sundowns-is-too-big-for-manqoba-mngqithi-says-junior-khanye/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 06:16:25 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166128 Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has criticised Manqoba Mngqithi following Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch on Wednesday evening.

Coming into the MTN8 semi-final first leg at the Lucas Moripe stadium, Downs were favourites given their home-ground advantage. Fawaaz Basadien scored Stellies’ winner in the 62nd minute but the away side could have won by at least two goals. Steve Barker created several chances but poor finishing let them down.

After the game, Khanye gave credit to Stellenbosch but criticised Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

“Manqoba Mngqithi must take the blame. You can’t change the way these players play. This team has been playing their brand of football for many years, and they won so many trophies as they have an identity,” he said on iDiskiTV.

Manqoba Mngqithi loses first game as Sundowns coach

“Tonight, Sundowns played as if they didn’t have any midfielders. They started the ball from the back and played it past the midfielder to the forwards. This is not the team’s strength and you can’t make Mishishi(Themba Zwane) your impact player, he is too slow. Yes, Mshishi knows football, he is a star but for him to come from the bench and win you a game, it’s not easy, especially given the speed Stellenbosch were playing,” Khanye added.

The former Chiefs star says Manqoba Mngqithi must take the full blame for Sundowns’ defeat.

“Sundowns deserved to lose today and the coach must take the blame,” Khanye said.

“He can’t be the head coach for Sundowns, the team is too big for him. He is going to have a problem trying to coach this team.

“From the two games I’ve watched this season, I can see that the team’s identity has changed. This is not the same Sundowns that used to be built from the back and not bypass the midfield.”

Manqoba Mngqithi will hope to turn things around when Sundowns travel to the Cape to play Stellies in the second leg this weekend. Khanye however believes the team has what it takes to defend their league title but predicts Mngqithi to be gone from the club soon

“I don’t think he’s gonna last but Downs will win the league because of the players they have.”

Five cool facts about legendary South African Olympian Tatjana Smith https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/paris-olympics-2024/five-cool-facts-about-legendary-south-african-olympian-tatjana-smith-paris-olympics/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 05:27:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2161984 The coolest fact about Paris 2024 Olympics hero Tatjana Smith is she’s the most decorated Olympian in South African history. There are more though.

Tatjana Smith fact file

Info via olympics.com’s official website.

  • Tatjana started swimming at age five and began competing at eight. She joined Tuks Sport School at 15.
  • Missed qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in the 200m breaststroke by 0.01 seconds (one-hundredth of a second).
  • became Olympic 200m breaststroke champion at Tokyo 2020, setting a then-world record of 2:18.95 and becoming the fifth South African to win an individual Olympic swimming title (Joan Harrison 1952, Penny Heynes 1996, Cameron van der Burgh 2012, Chad le Clos 2012).
  • On 04 November 2023, she married Joel Smith in Robertson, South Africa. Smith’s brother-in-law is South African rugby union captain and icon Siya Kolisi, World Cup winner in 2019 and 2023.
  • Smith regards Usain Bolt, Penny Heyns, Chad le Clos and Michael Phelps as her sporting heroes. These four legends have 37 Olympic golds between them.
Tatjana Smith Paris Olympics 2024 Penny Heyns
Penny Heyns has been effusive in her praise for Tatjana Smith. Image: Anton Geyser / Team SA

Why does Tatjana swim?

“My love for swimming makes me want to get up every morning and go to training. It’s like my second home. Being fortunate enough to travel the world doing what I love, seeing new places and meeting new people and sports heroes, motivates me a lot. The most important thing every young swimmer should realise is that nothing is impossible. They only need to believe and be prepared to put in the long and hard hours.”

Disappointment is part and parcel of elite sport

Reflecting on missing qualification for the 200m breaststroke in Rio, Smith was typically upbeat about one of the biggest setbacks in her professional career.

“2016 was a bit of a disappointment, but I knew everything happens for a reason. I wasn’t ready at that time. We got our hopes up and then I kind of got a dip, creating all that expectation. My fall was quite big, and I had to try and fall in love with the sport again.

“Looking back, maybe I needed to go through that disappointment to take me where I was in 2021 – more of a confident swimmer.”

And her philosophy?

“Focus on one’s improvement and one’s own goals rather than comparing oneself to others. If you’re constantly improving, you’ll eventually get to the top. For me, it was always about improving my time.”

Tebogo put Botswana on the map at the Paris 2024 Olympics

21-year-old Letsile Tebogo produced the run of his life to claim gold in a much-anticipated 200m event. He was the fastest qualifier and the only man to go under 20 seconds in the semi-finals, so he was certainly expected to medal. However, 100m champion and American superstar Noah Lyles was the overwhelming favourite to claim gold alongside his compatriot Kenny Bednarek. However, Tebogo ripped up the script and stormed to the line first in 19.46 seconds ahead of Bednarek in 19.62 and Lyles in 19.70. Tebogo is the first African man to win this event and it’s the first gold medal in Botswana’s history at the Olympic Games. Touchingly, Tebogo revealed the birthdate of his late mother on his running shoes in the moments after claiming what must have been a truly emotional victory.

Tebogo followed this trailblazing success up with gold at a recent Diamond League meeting in Switzerland. He eased across the line in 19.64 seconds for another win. He’s in the form of his life.

Kaizer Chiefs star dumped by his country, and it makes sense https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-star-dumped-by-venezuela-makes-sense/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 04:30:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2165567 Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Edson Castillo is no longer part of Venezuela coach Jose Peseiro’s plans. If you look at it subjectively, it’s hard to disagree with him.

Kaizer Chiefs star Castillo doesn’t cut the mustard for Venezuela

Kaizer Chiefs dip isn’t to blame

To blame Castillo’s understandable struggles at Chiefs in his debut season in a foreign country is missing the point. That’s reinforced by the 25-month gap between any meaningful involvement for Venezuela which can’t be attributed to Chiefs form because he wasn’t a Chiefs player until July of 2023. That being said, it’s still a dilemma for the club to solve. Initially, things went well for the midfield schemer who popped up with goals at key moments and started most of the games. The Amakhosi board will need to make a swift decision on his future; his contract expires in June 2025.

The bottom line is that Castillo simply isn’t good enough for the Venezuela National Team. There’s no shame in that with quality players like Girona’s Yangel Herrera, Austin’s Daniel Pereira and Toulouse’s Cristian Casseres Jr. ahead of him in the midfield pecking order. The challenge is for Chiefs to reincorporate him into their system to get the most out of a gifted footballer. Many midfielders across several leagues have excelled for their clubs after being shunned by their countries.

Kaizer Chiefs transfers: Nabi to sacrifice his first senior star https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-transfers-nabi-sacrifice-first-senior-star/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 04:25:57 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166071 Nasreddine Nabi will soon wield the axe as he shapes up his Kaizer Chiefs squad for the Betway Premiership challenges that lie ahead.

Edmilson Dove is on the chopping block at Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs have strengthened their backline this winter with central defenders Inacio Miguel and Rushwin Dortley arriving at Naturena for a combined R14.5 million. That’s a significant outlay and a statement that both players will be important members of the starting XI in 2024-2025. That leaves 30-year-old Dove in a tough situation. The Mozambican is currently sidelined with a long-term injury and his Chiefs deal expires in June 2025. Negotiations in that regard might depend on whether Chiefs can somehow do a deal for long-term left-back target Fawaaz Basadien. If they can, it’s probably tickets for Dove. The versatile Mozambican has 36 caps for his country and joined Chiefs in August 2022. He made 15 league appearances last term.

The foreign quota hasn’t been exceeded, yet

The league allows clubs to register a maximum of five foreign players. Currently, those five are Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Dove, Christian Saile, Edson Castillo and Fiacre Ntwari. To register Miguel, Chiefs would have had to sell or loan out one of these five. However, with Dove eligible for South African citizenship, that isn’t the case. The club will exercise that option should they wish to keep him.

When does the Betway Premiership transfer window close? https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/transfers-betway-premiership-window-close-date-kaizer-chiefs-pirates/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 04:11:05 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166075 Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and the other 13 Betway Premiership sides will be hustling to seal deals well into September.

The Betway Premiership transfer window is heating up

With just over three weeks to go until the transfer window shuts on 20 September, plenty of business remains to be done. As we draw nearer to that date, the dominoes could start falling. We’ve already seen high-profile exits with Khanyisa Mayo heading to Belouizdad in Algeria and Elias Mokwana option for a move to Esperance in Tunisia. Within the league, Iqraam Rayners sealed his much-anticipated switch to Sundowns from Stellenbosch. Ironically, Stellies hold a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Masandawana in the MTN8 semi-finals after their win on Wednesday night thanks to a Fawaaz Basadien penalty.

Chiefs have brought in several names to bolster their defensive ranks. Central defenders Rushwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel, goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari and left-back Bongani Sam should make them a more resolute unit. Gaston Sirino arrives from Sundowns to pick a few passes, but who will stick those chances in the net?

Kaizer Chiefs are still looking for a striker

Clement Mzise is the latest name on the lips of Amakhosi supporters. The club’s pursuit of Percy Tau and Fiston Mayele didn’t bear fruit, so they’re looking for alternatives. The Glamour Boys have significantly bolstered their defensive ranks though.

Orlando Pirates to Release Seven Fringe Stars

Pirates will sell or loan out as many as seven players before the new season. Sphamandla Gumede, Sandile Mthethwa, Bandile Shandu, Siphelo Baloni, Katlego Otladisa, Azola Tshobeni and the returning Goodman Mosele are all on the chopping block.

Betway Premiership start rearranged for the Sea Robbers

Jose Riveiro’s side are busy bees at the moment. They must negotiate a two-legged Caf Champions League qualifier against Jwaneng Galaxy in amongst MTN8 semi-finals; they drew 1-1 with Cape Town City in the first leg and the sides meet again at Orlando Stadium on Saturday 31 August. The new Betway Premiership campaign starts on 14 September, but the Bucs’ opener has been postponed because of heavy fixture congestion. They begin their quest for league glory at home against Polokwane on 24 September.

RUMOUR: Kaizer Chiefs find a cheap alternative to Fiston Mayele https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/rumour-kaizer-chiefs-find-cheap-alternative-to-fiston-mayele/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 03:47:16 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166081 Kaizer Chiefs have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Fiston Mayele, but they may have found a younger alternative.

Kaizer Chiefs move on from Mayele, identify cheaper option

According to SoccerLaduma, Chiefs have shifted their attention to another Young Africans striker after their pursuit of Fiston Mayele has seemingly hit a dead end. The man in question is 20-year-old Tanzanian forward Clement Mzisi. Born in 2004, Mzisi has one cap for Tanzania which he earned in September 2023.

“The coach has made it clear that they need a striker and it seems they are not getting their main targets hence the change of focus to another striker. They are working around the clock to get Mayele or Orebonye but if they can’t then they are looking at Mzize. As I have told you before, what they are looking at is an outright striker because Christian Saile and Ashley Du Preez are more or less like wingers and only Ranga Chivaviro is an experienced outright striker. Then they are surrounded by youngsters,” said the Siya source.

“The team is aiming to fight for trophies and someone to score goals to win games and they think Mzize could help if they don’t get the other two. They have now made inquiries about his availability and things could turn around soon if they don’t get their priority targets. They are working behind closed doors to get him if all other efforts fail,” the source added.

“You know they want to loan out Saile. Du Preez could move to Portugal. So they need replacements for these strikers in case they move before the end of September. The club is looking at all possibilities and Clement Mzize is one of them at the moment who they think they could afford to bring in,” the second source observed.

Mayele and Tau are off the table

Nasreddine Nabi seems to have categorically ruled out approaches for Al Ahly wide attacker Percy Tau and Pyramids FC striker Fiston Mayele. The latter bagged 54 goals in two seasons under the tutelage of Nasreddine Nabi. Across all clubs, Mayele has 14 goals and four assists from 25 appearances in the Caf Champions League, Africa’s elite club competition.

“There are no negotiations with Percy Tau because I believe he still has one year left on his contract,” Nabi told OnTime Sports. “Kaizer Chiefs respects the FIFA rules. If ever there’s an opportunity to sign him, it will be through official channels. We respect Al Ahly, they are a great team.”

“It’s the same situation with Fiston Mayele. He’s like family to me; we worked well together [at Young Africans]. But he has a contract with Pyramids, and he’s not available. We respect that and have not engaged in any negotiations.”

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015, their most recent piece of major silverware.

Kaizer Chiefs will surprise a lot of people – Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder https://www.thesouthafrican.com/sport/soccer/psl-south-africa/kaizer-chiefs-will-surprise-a-lot-of-people-ex-orlando-pirates-midfielder/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 03:45:00 +0000 https://www.thesouthafrican.com/?p=2166058 Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Solomon Mathe expects an improved Kaizer Chiefs this season.

Amakhosi have reinforced their squad with Nasreddine Nabi and his technical at the helm, Mathe expects them to improve and even qualify for the CAF competitions.

“We hope to see a competitive Kaizer Chiefs because the league with a strong Chiefs is interesting. When it comes to the signings, I believe they acquired good and experienced players and we will see in the opening few games how ready they are to compete,” Mathe told GOAL

Kaizer Chiefs to improve says former Orlando Pirates

”But you can have all good players in your team but if they are not united and fight for each other, there is no way you will do well. You have Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, SuperSport United, Sekhukhune United, and even Chiefs, I think they will surprise a lot of people.”

Unlike Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs have not won trophies regularly. In fact, the last time Amakhosi won silverware was back in 2015. Mathe though believes Nabi and his troops will surprise many this coming season.

”Chiefs can surprise many people this season, we should not rule them out, even position three is possible for them as long as they are united,” he added.

“Unity makes the team win, look at Pirates and Sundowns they fight for each other even the players who are on the stand support those who are playing.”

Both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will open their Betway Premiership season next month on 14 September. The Buccaneers however have already played four cup matches so far this campaign.

Will Nabi rescue Chiefs?

Orlando Pirates’ Olisa Ndah has been selected for his national team Nigeria.

Following the exit of coach Finidi George, Nigeria have appointed Bruno Labbadia from Germany. With two games against Benin and Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers in September, Orlando Pirates’ 26-year-old central defender Ndah will be part of it.

ORLANDO PIRATES COACH JOSE RIVEIRO ON BAFANA BAFANA

In other news, seven Buccaneers have been listed in the Bafana Bafana preliminary squad and coach Jose Riveiro is pleased.

According to the Spaniard, Orlando Pirates players need the experience to compete in international games, as one of his players returned from Afcon 2023 with new maturity and self-belief.

“I think it’s important for them, and hopefully, we can have those seven players and more in the future. It’s very important to have the opportunity to play those games. It also gives you the responsibility to represent your national team,” Riveiro said via FARPost.

“Obviously it’s going to push you to mature and have the capacity to play in those kinds of games [high competitive games].

“I think one clear example is Evidence Makgopa. I think his performance after the last AFCON, the player that we got back, is a different one. This is in terms of maturity and self-confidence.

“So, I would like to see the names of our players in the Bafana Bafana list. Definitely, that kind of experience is going to help them as individuals and us as a team,” the Orlando Pirates tactician concluded.

Full list of selected players:

  • Sipho Chaine – Goalkeeper
  • Thabiso Monyane – Right Back
  • Nkosinathi Sibisi – Central Defender
